Bandai Brings Upcoming Bandai Namco Nui Tamagotchi Merchandise to 2024 Anime NYC

Some new merchandise has just appeared, and we’re excited! Anime NYC is an annual three-day anime convention for all things anime. It is being hosted at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in Hudson Yard, New York City from Friday, August 23rd, 2024, through Sunday, August 25th, 2024.

Bandai is in attendance in several capacities, including Gashapon, but we were really shocked to see that they’re previewing new Tamagotchi merchandise at Anime NYC!

First we have the IN Tamagotchi Plush that we originally saw at the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con, but now we see Mimitchi! Who is in the Art Style shell. These do not yet have a release date.

Second are the Chibi Nui Plushes, both volume 1 and volume 2. Volume 1 feature Mametchi, Mimitchi, Violetchi, Kuchipatchi. We saw these at the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con. Now volume 2 features Maskutchi, Memetchi, Gozarutchi, Pochitchi, and Young Mametchi. This is the first time we’re seeing the volume 2 collection, they’re not even listed on the Bandai Namco Nui website. Volume 1 originally launched in Japan April, 2024.

Third are PuriNui Big Mametchi and Mimitchi plushes which appear to be larger plushes that sit perfectly on any flat surface.

Fourth is the Bandai Namco Nui Mametchi PlayCharm Smartphone Plush. This is a super cute way to attach Mametchi to your smartphone! This just launched in Japan in June, 2024.

👁️Overview 

Late last year, I rather belatedly discovered Mononoke’s 15th anniversary came and went, and with it, an entire swath of new content to manically pore over. This is an illustration of the various Mononoke merchandise, props, and set dressing I discovered.

🔎Scope

Some fun facts regarding the work that went into this illustration!

Not including research time, this project ran for roughly two months, consuming much of my waking hours outside of my full time and freelance jobs.

While the illustration does not depict all of my findings, it does feature over 120 unique props and set dressings!

The majority of the props and set dressing were modeled to varying degrees of detail in SketchUp.

To model prep, I often put together schematics on Photoshop or Illustrators. Some were created from scratch. Others were created with the liberal usage of the Photoshop transform and perspective warp function. 

The master file is 1.5GB. The dimensions are 6400x3600 at 300 dpi, and contains over 2,200 layers. 

Near the end of production, the master file became so unwieldy I created a separate working file. This way, I could create assets lag-free then import the layers into the master file.

🗳️3D Layout

As you can see, the backbone of this illustration is the 3D model. I spent perhaps 30-40% of my production time on this stage.

And this is the lit version. The lighting ultimately got downplayed in favor of showcasing the vibrant colors. I like how simple it looks though!

🎬Production-Based Set Dressing

In addition to merchandise, I wanted to insert set dressing and props from the various Mononoke productions. 

🦊Kusuriuri

It’s odd to have a section dedicated just to him, but his unique appearance warrants it. His garb and overall appearance is an amalgam of the anime and movie. The original intent was ambiguity– kind of like the blue/black vs. yellow/white dress phenomena a few years back. But after doing the color flats, I rather liked how the rich, unaltered colored fit with the overall composition so it became more blatant. I’m surprised that nobody has commented on this since I published the illustration. Maybe because I didn’t feature him in a close-up?

🐈 kai ~Ayakashi~Bake Neko (2006)

Finding props iconic to this story arc (outside of the Kusuriuri’s tools of trade, of course) was somewhat difficult. While the environment was richly decorated, it mainly consisted of 2D artwork which I wasn’t keen on retracing. I opted to paint objects that characters interacted with or featured heavily in the show.

The props fall into three distinct categories here: Kusuriuri’s tools and trinkets; things featured in the opening and ending credits; and objects iconic to each of the five story arcs in the series. I tried to keep most of them clustered on the tatami, but as space grew scarce some props trickled up onto the deck as well.

☂️Mononoke: Karakasa (2024)

Pretty slim pickings for the new movie since I only had the teaser, first trailer, and movie poster to reference from. Kusuriuri’s tools of trade were a given, but finding memorable and narratively significant objects was a tad troublesome.

Thankfully, the set dressing ended up (however subconsciously) strikingly similar to the movie’s environment design, down to the green tatami and multicolor shoji screen. I suppose at this point I was so immersed in Mononoke content that its aesthetics subconsciously informed my design choices!

Maybe some day he'll try to get you a little thing you might be missing to make your walls/shelves look even fuller.

When he first saw your collectibles he stared in awe, then tried to count them all as quick as he could but got lost halfway.

He smiled, reassuring you there is no problem with you collecting all those precious things as long as it makes you happy on your safe place.

He might have a little collection of his favorite heroes' merchandise, so he'd be the most curious and may ask the best questions about how you got everything your fascinating room is displaying.

Might invite you over his room to help him choose what to do to get a collection as wide and good-looking as yours.

Definitely expect a collectible as a thanks.

Her first reaction was a surprised gasp, stars in her eyes as she got closer at light's speed to each figurine/poster/other collectible you've gotten to get a better look.

Starts asking you tons of questions as to when did this collection started and why do you like it so much. With these talks you only drive her to want one of her own.

So she might ask for advice on how to start one. With your help and both of your minds' creativity you surely will get a unique collection done quickly in her room that might or might not expand further than only on her room.

Expect sharing matching-keychains about all yours and her liked series/games/movies characters or almost anything at all.

this evening, on August 5th, 2024, around 8:50p.m. or so, i had an epiphany. a revelation that has chilled me to my core

i have spent the past HALF DECADE DRAWING AND VIEWING AND INTERPRETING PORKY'S EARS COMPLETELY WRONG. I AM SO MAD. GOBSMACKED. BETRAYED. I HAVE SPENT NEARLY 5 YEARS THINKING THAT THE RIGHTMOST EXAMPLE WAS HOW HIS EARS WORKED

TO MAKE IT WORSE! to make it worse. i have seen screenshots such as this one as a specific animator interpreting his ears as like, cat ears or something with furry insides. and i've always been like "lol that's weird but makes sense, pigs have little hairs". still assuming the cartilage explanation was a default.

TO MAKE IT WORSE WORSE. i have been using images such as this one as a go-to painting reference, INCLUDING FOR THE EARS. and have just been like "oh it was a stylistic choice here".

i literally just got up and lifted every piece of Porky merchandise i had, looked closely at his ears, and contemptuously threw it back down realizing that they are all indeed concave. 5 YEARS. HALF A DECADE I HAVE BEEN SO CLUELESS. I'M SO MAD.

this would also not nearly be as big of a deal if I WERE NOT THE SELF PROCLAIMED #1 PORKY PIG FAN AND HAVE SPENT HOURS AND HOURS AND WEEKS AND MONTHS AND YEARS scrutinizing every single detail about him imaginable that nobody else has ever bothered to care about, bringing up new observations and connections and the most menial details possible. i can, have, and will again give breathless diatribes about his significance as a character AND YET I CAN'T EVEN INTERPRET HOW HIS EARS WORK.

Random DMBJ Trivia Part 2

Wu Xie is 181cm or 5'11''. Hei Yanjing is 185cm or 6'1''.

In the novel, Hei Yanjing has a degree in music and anatomy from Germany. In The Lost Tomb, Wu Xie studied in Germany and in Tomb of the Sea, Huo Daofu also studied in Germany.

He Longlong, who played Huo Daofu, was an actor in an agency NPSS owns. He left the agency before Reunion aired and as a result, wasn't included in any promotional pictures for the show.

Li Cu was born sometime around 1996 in the novels. Based on this, he will be 28 years old in 2024.

Wu Xie has described Zhang Haiyan/Zhang Hailou as an "evil madman" and reminded him of Hei Yanjing.

Hei Yanjing's birthday (January 23) and Xie Yuchen's birthday (October 3) likely originated from official merchandise that was released.

One of the head writers for Ultimate Note, Tian Liangliang, also worked as a screenwriter on The Lost Tomb 2.

Qi Yu's name has been mentioned in Volume 2 and Restart. However, in the animation Buried Tree Devil and the television adaptations The Lost Tomb 2 and Reunion, his name was taken out.

The color of Zhang Qiling's tattoo was initially described as being 青色 (Qīngsè) which can mean blue, green, blue-green, or even black. This is why the color is described as green in Cavern of the Blood Zombies and may be why the tattoo is so blue in The Lost Tomb. In later novels, the tattoo is described as black.

Zhang Qiling's iconic blue hoody is said to have originated from the first edition of the Daomu comic. However, other fans believe it originated from early official artwork by the same artist company which was subsequently replicated in fan art.
