"A young entrepreneur is using 3D printers to create cheap school campuses in rural Madagascar.
It takes just $40,000 and 18 hours to build a “Thinking Hut,” as they’re called, and founder of the project Maggie Grout is aiming to get the cost even lower before handing the reins over to local professionals.
GNN previously reported on Maggie Grout’s idea in 2021 during the pandemic. It was then that she and a San Francisco architect came up with the idea of making them honeycomb-shaped so that additional modules could be added seamlessly.
And indeed, the first completed campus is called the “Honeycomb.”
Madagascar is one of the most challenging places in Africa to develop, but also the most opportune owing to a lack of any armed conflicts and a government welcoming of foreign workers.
But extreme poverty, lack of infrastructure, terrible roads, and a delicate, priceless natural ecosystem all pose challenges to anyone seeking to implement large-scale development projects.
Instead, Grout brought her 3D printers over in a single shipping container and has now printed a school in the town of Fianarantsoa, a city in south-central Madagascar with 200,000 people.
“From that first project, I really learned how to streamline the logistics,” Grout told Fast Company. “I learned how to put together the supply chain when there’s not a lot of locally available materials. And then I learned how to work in harmony with the local people.”
Local people are the key—lack of institutional presence in rural areas means that almost any economic activity has a foundation built on years of trust between community individuals. When foreigners come in, building trust is often the biggest challenge to getting a project off the ground in Madagascar.
However, from the onset, Grout said she wanted to rely on the locals as much as possible. During the first project, she learned how to best manage a team of cross-cultural partners. She used local people to install traditional windows and doors, and worked with the Madagascar Ministry of Education to bring in teachers.
“We do think through the holistic collateral impacts of what we’re doing,” Grout says. “We’re really just aiming to be a stepping stone for [the community] to be successful on their own… We don’t want them to be dependent on us.”
Her long-term goal is to establish Thinking Huts in many different countries."

Note: A bit older but still good - and still ongoing! This year they started a formal partnership with the Madagascar Ministry of Education and are working on a new campus, The Honeycomb Project.

Hello! Here's an update on all of Arknights' currently accessible auxiliary material as of May 2024! There's plenty to check out, so I hope this is helpful for some!
Animation
Arknights Prelude To Dawn (S1) and Perish in Frost (S2): [Crunchyroll]
Tumblr media
An adaptation of the main story, up through Chapter 0 to Chapter 6! It's much more fast-paced than the in-game story, so I wouldn't use it to replace actually reading it, but it's very cool to see some of these scenes in full animation. Season 3, Arknights: Rise from Ember, has been announced! Lee's Detective Agency: [Youtube]
Tumblr media
A mini-series animated in a chibi style with a comedic tone. Focused on the adventures of the Kuroblood-illustrated Lee's Detective Agency! Distributed by Crunchyroll globally, but entirely free to watch.
Closure's Secret Files: [Youtube]
Tumblr media
A cut-out styled series of shorts hosted by Closure which outlines a lot of the game's basic mechanics!
Holy Knight Light: [Youtube]
Tumblr media
A short OVA focusing around Penguin Logistics delivering a package, celebrating Arknights' first anniversary. Officially posted to Youtube!
Kay's Daily Doodles: [Youtube]
Tumblr media
Another free, comedic Youtube mini-series, posted to the offical Arknights Youtube account and focused around Ceobe! Here's some additional animations! Each event usually also has a 15 second 2D animated preview of the event, but there's so many of those that I can't list them all. Anniversary Event 3D Animations: Zwillingstürme im Herbst So Long, Adele Lone Trail Where Vernal Winds Will Never Blow Il Siracusano Ideal City Stultifera Navis Invitation To Wine Near Light Dossoles Holiday Under Tides Bonus 3D Animated Shorts: Legend of Chongyue Arknights Special - IL Siracusano Lo Scontro Youtube Shorts: Ch'en and Lin's Watermelon Splitting Game Part 1 Ch'en and Lin's Watermelon Splitting Game Part 2 Amiya's Siracusan Food Guide Part 1 Amiya's Siracusano Food Guide Part 2 Amiya's Special Gift Doctor's Gifts in Return 1 Doctor's Gifts in Return 2
Comics, Manga, Manhua
Officially Translated:
Rhodes Island's Records of Originium: Rhine Lab: [Offical Source]
Tumblr media
A canon manhua centered around the circumstances that lead to Silence falling out with Saria and joining Rhodes Island with Ifrit, as well as Ifrit's attempt to save a dying infected stowaway on the landship. Essential reading for understanding the Rhine Lab storyline and characters - read it right after Mansfield for when it was chronologically released! One of the characters, Darya, is mentioned in both Ifrit's module and briefly in Lone Trail.
Rhodes Island's Records of Originium: Blacksteel: [Official Source]
Tumblr media
A short story focusing on the lives of the Blacksteel operators aboard the landship. While it often gets overshadowed by the Rhine Lab manga which is bigger in scope, this is a great read especially if you're interested in Franka or Liskarm.
Rhodes Kitchen -TIDBITS-: [Official Source]
Tumblr media
An anthology story related to the cuisine that's important to a variety of operators. While it might seem unassuming, the art is gorgeous and it's really well-written! The Blacksteel, Rhine Lab, and Rhodes Kitchen manga have all been sold in physical copies, if you're interested in having them in print!
Prelude Suite: Cadenza Virtuosa: [Official Source]
Tumblr media
An epilogue to Hortus De Escapismo focusing on Arturia's background, with the second chapter serving as a prelude for Zwillingstrume im Herbst! An excellent read to get better insight into Arturia's character.
Angelina: Sketches of this Messenger's Journey: [Official Source]
Tumblr media
A more comedically focused manwha, centered on the adventures of Angelina travelling across Terra as a Messenger! Currently updating, with recent chapters focusing on Sami and Siesta!
Unofficially Translated
The Dagger's Inheritors: [Youtube]
Tumblr media
A 15-minute short 3D animated film about W's past and relationship with Theresa, released for the 5th Arknights anniversary. Arknights Comic Anthology: [Mangadex]
Tumblr media
As the title says, a series of non-canon anthology stories regarding the cast of Rhodes' Island! Some of the chapters on Mangadex for the later volumes of the Comic Anthology specifically have been machine translated, but the same is not true for the other manga shared here. Chapters are hit-and-miss, but the whole series is generally a fun read! See the original post for specific chapter suggestions.
123 Rhodes Island: [Mangadex]
Tumblr media
A series of non-canon gag comics for the CN server, usually updated when new operators or events release!
Arknights: Operators!: [Mangadex]
Tumblr media
A compilation of shortform manga posted on the official ArknightsJP twitter account! Thank you to @sleepywoodscans for their work on personally translating these!
Arknights: A1 Operations Preparation Detachment: [Mangadex]
Tumblr media
Part of the Terra Historicus website and not yet officially translated, focusing on Fang, Kroos and Beagle before they join Rhodes Island, and a catastrophe striking the Columbian city of Tkaronto. Thank you to @pooce-art for their translation work!
Other:
Arknights Ambience Synesthesia: [Youtube]
Tumblr media
A series of concerts (4 so far), focused around Arknights' music! A live performance has been done every year, with skins released in-game for the concert's theme & 3D animations produced featuring the skin's cast in 2022, 2023, and 2024.
Monster Siren Records: [Spotify] [Official Website]
Tumblr media
Arknights' official (and-in-universe) record label publishing game OSTs, themes for almost every 6 star operator that releases, and occasional bonus songs.
Arknights: Endfield: [Twitter]
Tumblr media
An upcoming 3D action gacha game from Hypergryph, set in the far future of Arknights' universe on another planet. Currently in closed beta testing for both EN and CN servers!
UNOFFICIAL:
Some fandom-developed tools that might be of use to you are: The Arknights Terra Wiki. While it is a very accurate source for in-game data, take the explanation of in-game story and some specific claims with a grain of salt. The FANDOM version of this wiki is currently no longer mantained and subject to vandalism! Given you can translate or read Chinese, PRTS.wiki is the current best resource for game assets!
As well, the Arknights Story Reader can help you catch up on stuff you don't want to or can't read in game! Jacob Moreau on Youtube provides voiceover readings of many in-game stories as well.
Finally, Aceship's Toolbox provides access to a variety of tools, including a levelling calculator, a calculator to ensure the best recruitments, and all the CGs, backgrounds and character sprites that are available in-game as of So Long, Adele (as far as I'm aware, the sprite/cg gallery is no longer being updated.)
Conclusion:
Thank you for reading! I hope this provided some new information to you or is an easy reference source in the future. Some things, such as merch (i.e. board games) or the official lore book have not been included due to not being accessible or translated for EN players. I'm happy to continue to provide more information like this to make the art surrounding this series more accessible! If you have any questions, feel free to send me an ask.

hey! I was wondering if you ever watch clints reptiles - he just posted a video about marcupeal phylogeny and specifically mentioned thylacines, and talked about how theres been sightings in new guinea? i was just wondering about your opinion, since you just posted a new thylacine drawing and i know youre very interested in them :D
idk, the fact i haven't heard all that much buzz about this theory from the zoologists i follow on twitter makes me doubtful by default.
i'll be honest i'm pretty skeptical of this new guinea claim because of dingoes and new guinea singing dogs.
the popularly accepted theory for the mainland extinction of the thylacine and likely tasmanian devil was competing pressure from dingoes.
clint mentions all of this, but he leaves out the fact that dingoes arrived on the australian continent from the north and studies indicate that dingoes may be descendants of more basal new guinea singing dogs. that would likely mean imo that the new guinea thylacine population, if anything, would be the first to suffer the consequences of canine encroachment.
only on the island of tasmania where absolutely no dingoes were ever present sheltered a 100% verifiable thylacine population by the time of european colonization. to my knowledge, the most recent solid physical evidence of thylacines in new guinea is still several thousand years old. so to me it seems that dingo/wild dog distribution and thylacine distribution mixed as well as oil and water. If there's thylacines in new guinea, it would have to be some enclave free of dogs.
i know the topography of new guinea can give refuge to very cryptic animals, and as clint said the relatively low human population and no european persecution is a plus. i won't disocount local indigenous anecdotes because they've been proven right with other species once thought extinct, but like where are skins or bones or footprints?
also i feel like clint really really oversimplified the cloning process thylacines would require. he makes it seem like it would be simple because we have their whole genome sequenced and have specimens under 100 years old to work with. the thing is, cloning a mammoth is simpler than cloning a thylacine even though they went extinct millenia ago, because mammoths still have a close living relative.
a cursory look at google tells me wooly mammoths and extant asian elephants last shared an ancestor as recently as 6 million years ago, they both belong to the family elephantidae. thylacines however were the last living member of their own family, thylacinidae, which diverged somewhere around 25mya from the other dasyuromorphs. scientists don't really have a close living relative to work with. clint says the complete genome means we wouldn't have to "stick frog DNA in there" to complete it, but the thing is with cloning you have to start with a frog/living DNA sample to tweak it into a thylacine!! until we can 3D print an organism out of thin air with proteins and acids, there has to be a template sample of living cells whose nuclei we can tamper with. and the less related they are, the more DNA has to be overhauled
if you wanna learn exactly how much of a logistical nightmare it's gonna be to clone a thylacine, this lecture explains it way better:
youtube
the takeaway analogy is that cloning a thylacine is the CRISPR equivalent of doing a puzzle of a clear blue sky, not having the box to look at for any reference, and about half the pieces are doubles of other pieces (because most DNA is junk code that does nothing). it's like next to impossible and i still have more faith in de-extinction than a rediscovery.
so yeah, i guess i'm a bit of a thylacine doomer. but i do want to believe, just temper your expectations. to me a win would be a single engineered thylacine cell by the centennial of their extinction lol.

Speculative Fiction Firearms: Part 1, the Holy Boltgun
The .998" Godwyn Boltgun.
What is a Boltgun?
Gyrojet: Attaches the casing to the bullet, with tiny holes to turn it into a tiny rocket. The holes are drilled to give it a spin. Contrary to popular belief, the primary reason it wasn't implemented was simple logistics. Most cases are, literally, just stamped. If you have the sheet metal ready, they literally take seconds. the Gyrojet was far more complicated to make. We have gotten to the point that 3D printing / minifacturing could conceivable produce them reliably.
HEDP: High Explosive Dual Purpose. This has a reinforced tip, with a time-delayed explosive. The second it takes to detonate allows it to penetrate far more, dramatically improving the damage to the target.
These are both technologies that are entirely possible to create right at this very moment. Assuming we have genetically engineered super soldiers in powered armour to wield them.
Gyrojets dramatically reduce the length of the barrel, which is the heaviest part of the weapon. It allows the removal of rifling, which dramatically lowers the recoil of the weapon.
HEDP work exceptionally well, and are standard warheads in use by certain militaries. The primary reason we don't is... that it would be a war crime. Unless we designed it for anti-material use.

Do you take 3D print commissions? Or are you planning to in the future? Ur work is so welldone and id love to have a little battle cat of my own to keep me company <3
Omg thank you!! I might do custom 3d commissions? I'd have to work out the logistics, but if people are interested I'd absolutely consider it!
If there is enough interest, I will be selling unpainted versions of the models I've already made too!

We might not know enough about guns to regulate them properly.
Some folks on the Left probably need to learn more about guns.
I've seen so many people pronounce loudly that banning the AR-15 is the single greatest thing we could do to stop mass shootings.
But I'm afraid it is much more complicated than that.
During the first assault weapons ban in the 90s, legislators had trouble defining the weapons they wanted to ban so they included details like no bayonet lugs or foldable stocks or pistol grips. I guess they were trying to find aspects that a lot of these weapons had in common in order to identify which guns to ban. But soon after, gun manufacturers just left these elements out of their designs and made essentially the same guns.
Despite some dubious statistics I've seen on Twitter about this 90s ban being amazingly effective, most experts found that the ban had little to no effect on firearm deaths or the lethality of gun crimes. People just used different guns that weren't banned.
Beyond that, the AR-15 is one model of gun from one manufacturer. There are tons of copycat designs from other brands. There are kits you can build yourself. You can even 3D print all of the non-metallic parts. Not to mention there are plenty of assault weapons that have similar characteristics. The AK-47 uses even more powerful ammunition.
And then there is this "ranch rifle."
Tumblr media
It doesn't look like a scary Rambo gun, but it shoots the same bullets as the AR-15 and has large capacity magazines. It is functionally the same.
Would this be included in the ban? Or would our legislators think it is just a harmless varmint rifle used for shooting pests on the farm as the marketing suggests?
There is also the fact that most shootings take place at short distances where even small caliber handguns would be plenty lethal and effective for a mass shooting. Bigger rifles send the rounds out quicker and can penetrate better at longer distances, so the casualty count might be a little higher versus a handgun. But at the most common distances, I don't know if it would be a huge difference. Las Vegas might have been less deadly due to the shooter firing from a longer distance, but he could have also used much higher caliber hunting rifles, though with a slower rate of fire. If 20 people die instead of 60, that is certainly an improvement, but probably not the result people are hoping for with these bans.
I guess what I'm trying to say is there are so many options when it comes to firearms that I just don't know if gun bans are going to be the solution to this issue. I think focusing resources on identifying dangerous people and preventing them from getting weapons in the first place might be a better place to start. Mandatory training, gun licenses, liability insurance, and expensive background checks could all be used as barriers for a dangerous person to acquire a gun. We could also flag large ammo purchases.
Getting rid of one style of gun when there are hundreds of other flavors of gun that can do a similar amount of damage doesn't seem like it will do much in the grand scheme. Creating hoops for bad people to jump through so that hopefully they get snagged in one of them might work better.
If we were to do gun bans, I think it should be more like... every household is allowed one revolver for self defense and all other firearms must be secured at a gun club or shooting range.
But that feels like a pipe dream in this country.
The sad truth is the toothpaste may be out of the tube. We literally have more guns than people right now. How would we logistically confiscate millions of guns? Especially from people who might use those guns to try and prevent said confiscation.
Honestly, I'm not sure we can actually solve this problem. At best maybe we can make it slightly less bad.

Why stop at the life size nerevar bust when you could do the whole body
Mostly logistics. I don’t like most full sized statues as I get rly nit picky. Plus the logistics of printing pieces that big and putting it together. I’ve seen someone make a lifesize Barbie BJD and there are numerous challengers with it I think. Plus someone would have to 3d model it bc I don’t don’t know shit about fuck about sculpting
I think a bust figure would allow less room for error, plus it’s an existing model/design.

US doesn't have enough Walk albums, many stores of Target and Walmart are not stocked at all. Naturally, fans think SM wants to gaslight 127 into thinking they are losers, appealing to shareholders with increasing net revenue and a strong foothold in NA, looking pretty in the business reports and helping shares to sell for a higher price be damned, I guess. Who cares about losing the 3d largest musical market, right? After all the effort in 2019?
It is an existing problem though. 127 is predicted to fall out of Billboard Top 20 first time in 6th years.
Not producing enough albums in time for the comeback would usually be the root of the cause I'd blame, SM always does everything last minute. However, I wonder if Houthis and ships avoiding going through the Red Sea (they go all the way down around Africa) is playing any part in the current predicament?
As I understand, cargo ships make a lot of steps along the way (loading and unloading goods, more profitable), so shipping via Pacific is not common. SeaLead launched a new route, but it's going to be weekly.
Maybe it's not SM wanting to sabotage 127, maybe it's SM logistical department not figuring out in time how to ship quickly? With the everexisting problem of albums being printed late? Just saying. I can be mistaken. The problem with the Red Sea is not that new, there was time to find a way around. Still, the new shipment detour around Africa adds 10 days of journey. To have a better clue one needs to compare the situation with other groups like aespa and Red velvet. Or wait and see if the albums hit the shops with a delay of few weeks or not.
P.S. NCT Dream debuted the same year and the members renew their contracts around the same time as 127. Are they being gaslighted as well? With the tour? Heh.

The Keepers website was taken down sometime in the last few days. I don't know exactly when, because I don't remember the last time I checked it, and our fandom is so small that it could easily have taken months to notice if I hadn't needed to reference something for the wiki.
It's not really a logistical problem; thankfully, the Wayback Machine has a recent scan of the website that covers everything- all the text, all the files. I've downloaded all the assets to my computer to make sure I have it personally backed up. (Let me know if you'd like any in particular.)
Nonetheless, the whole situation has left me feeling really... empty, I guess. For years, the Keepers website was basically the only thing left to anchor this story in the present. Almost everything about the series- initial announcement, anything from the original book tour, early author interviews, the HarperCollins webpage- was already gone soon after the series wrapped up. But now, all those links are gone, and the series is out of print, and the fandom is a few people on Tumblr who occasionally think about it, and vam, and me.
In just five days, the first Keepers book will reach its nine-year anniversary. But I don't feel like celebrating, because I feel like my favorite books are part of history now. Books are supposed to be timeless, but so few people are ever going to pick up these books again. Even so, I'm always excited by forgotten books- but Keepers doesn't feel exciting in the same way, because it's in the process of being forgotten, and because I know it could have survived if it had just reached its target audience.
The books are gone- out of print. The author is gone- he's said he wants to write another children's series, but he hasn't posted anything in several years, and his one last link to Keepers just went down. The people who read these books when they came out, the children in the school tours and the positive Facebook commenters and the one student who made the 3D-printed Fel'Daera, they're gone too, because Keepers likely isn't part of their story anymore. So, I guess I'm glad that it's part of mine.
I know this is a very specific feeling, and I know all 4 of my followers are already aware of the Keepers series, and I don't need to be telling you about it. But I guess what I do want to tell you is: Let's talk about Keepers. Let's draw and write and think about Keepers. Let's keep our memories of this series alive, and let's share it with our friends and through that let's send our problem into every other universe. God knows, we all deserve these books.
I'll see y'all later this week with a map of the Great Burrow.

Can you share some more of your thoughts on Momo's quirk (if you have any)?? Always love seeing your takes🤭 hope you'll have q good day!
omggggg thank you! I'm still early in bnha but the logistics (physically/medically and culturally) of how quirks work fascinate me and momo's in particular is interesting because it's both so intensely physical, at least as far as quirks go (like she's no tokoyami or uraraka calling upon ephemeral universal forces. the stuff she makes with creation comes out of her body. she's transmuting her own flesh into weapons) and relatively unexplored in terms of how she goes through the world.
I'm not discounting the effects of the out-of-universe drive to give female characters appropriately feminine, sexualizable abilities (debates about momo's hero costume are as old as time and I am NOT interested in adding to it here lol) on the power horikoshi chose to give her and how it's characterized in the story, but the sci-fi nerd in me likes being watsonian when it comes to this kind of thing so I'll disregard it in this post.
I'm 99% sure that how momo uses her powers in-story implies that she isn't strictly held to conservation of matter/energy, because she makes SO much shit without suffering any ill effects. in the fight between her, todoroki and aizawa she habitually makes flash grenades (and discreet cases to hide them in!) for the whole battle without any issues. there's no way she could fight as easily she does there while constantly taking grenade-sized chunks out of herself—so I don't believe she does. unless momo is truly just taking the rapid loss of her own body mass during battle like a champ, then there's no way she's using matter on a 1 : 1 basis here. she's gotta be fudging it somehow!
on a related note, where is she getting all the different elements necessary for the things she wants to make? when she makes flash grenades, where in her body/diet does she get all of the necessary, non-metabolizable materials to make that from? does she have a diet specialized for human 3d printers? taking another option, if her quirk gives her the ability to eat normally and naturally metabolize that food into whatever elements she needs for the things she wants to make, then does her quirk allow her to just casually do nuclear fusion?
she mentions during the midterms subplot that she's good at physics and chemistry because she needs to understand how to make something before she can construct it. this is a minor detail, but it makes me insane with how many questions it opens up. this applies to all quirks to a certain extent (I like to think about the famous "what is it like to be a bat?" philosophical essay in considering this, specifically the idea that you can imagine what it's like to have sensory perception/abilities other than your own, but that's not the same as the lived experience of it), but what is the lived experience of manifesting something out of your body like? what does momo feel when she uses her quirk? does she have to visualize wholeass blueprints in her head and 3d print them on the spot? is it more automatic than that? how do the mental and physical aspects of her quirk affect each other?

A polycule that PAXY (pictured right– they didn't look like a worm back then) used to belong to. Polyamory is the standard in almost every Visitant culture, typically with groups of 3-6 individuals that are all dating every other member. Visitant are biologically immortal and do not die very often, so they don't usually enter relationships with the goal of staying in them forever– it's expected that you'll leave amicably, eventually. That's what happened with PAXY, and it's partially why they're in the Milky Way now instead of the depths of Hyperspace.
more lore:
Everybody pictured is involved in various Visitant supply chains in one way or another. The Ministry of Transportation handles logistics / transport of goods (among other things), Consumer Goods handles the factories / manufacturing, and Readiness (now renamed to Homespace Readiness, after the discovery of the Milky Way) does the diplomacy and co-ordinates with other Hyperspace aliens. I don't know what this power quintuple was involved in manufacturing– probably several things.
A common Visitant gesture of affection is to gently headbutt the other person (the "head" being whereever the most eyes are located– on PAXY here that would be the four prehensile spikes extending from the top of their body. Their eyes are small here and difficult to see). It can be a platonic or romantic gesture. Hugging is acceptable too but it isn't a go-to for most people, on account of some Visitant proxies not having any limbs. Also embracing another person can block sunlight from reaching their skin and keep them from basking.
Some notes on their proxy fashion:
-The fuzz on YV1417γ and 7228GLδ's bodies are a region-specific thing and might be seen as "weird" or "kind of gross" in other areas of the Administration, especially if any of the local fauna there has brightly coloured fur of their own. Visitant don't like animals and don't like looking like them.
-116EM5δ and PAXY are going by a more universally popular minimalist style. They both have tiny tractor beams embedded in their bodies instead of manipulator limbs. Fancy!
-B8Z289β here has a floral pattern, but it isn't seen as "pretty" to other Visitant. Flower patterns are used as camouflage in some areas of Visitant territory, and so they are associated with warriors/soldiers. It's their equivalent to wearing camo print and combat boots
-7228GLδ's faceplate is their face. B8Z289β's is the pink square on their "abdomen." Everybody else has a 3D, holographic faceplate hovering above their head

Electronics manufacturing trends to pay attention to in years to come
Despite the pandemic-induced economic slowdown, technological advancements played a significant role in the growth of the electronics manufacturing sector. Smarter manufacturing practices have been the biggest driver of this growth. We intend to explore five trendsetting developments in this article today.
Internet of Things The electronics manufacturing industry can leverage the Internet of Things (IoT) for unprecedented growth opportunities. The IoT allows electronic manufacturing units to be digitally connected while storing and processing information without external support. The IoT can improve efficiency, security, cost-effectiveness, and product innovation. Cloud computing, smaller censors, and the growth of the Internet have prompted IoT’s lead in the race of emerging technologies.
