Another snippet from my Flipping the Coin au. Probably won’t make it into the actual fic, but I’ve been obsessed with these two and keep finding myself writing moments like this ^^
Mordred was sprawled over Arthur’s chest, with his thumb tucked in his mouth, and blue eyes serious as he listened to the story with the gravity of a judge. The two of them are slumped in their favorite armchair, the red velvet blotchy from numerous spilled drinks, sticky snacks, and misguided attempts at crafts. It was too warm for a fire, but in the dim evening, with the lone table lamp for light and the window cracked open for a breath of air, it took Arthur back to countless evenings spent in another room. One built of stone and lit only by candle flame.
Aloud, Arthur read, “Because he was the king…”
Personally, it wasn’t his favorite retelling, but Mordred had seen his name on the cover and insisted on hearing it, so he had conceded. Maybe he should’ve waited until Mordred was older before telling him that there were stories about characters who shared their names, but in these last few years, the events from long ago had been so close to mind Arthur had wanted to share it. He assumed Mordred would fixate on the sword fighting and tournaments. Instead, Mordred had picked a book that started with babies being sent out to sea.
“Two by two, he carried—“
Mordred pulled his thumb out of his mouth. “Did you really do that?”
“No.” Arthur marked his spot with a finger and ruffled the thick, black curls. Still damp from the bath, they were in need of a comb. And soon, if Arthur hoped to avoid dealing with tangles. “I never did that.” Dipping his fingers to tickle the back of Mordred’s neck, he smiled as Mordred giggled and tried to escape. “I could never.”
Sitting up, Mordred’s knobby limbs found all of Arthur’s soft spots as he settled knees first on top of Arthur’s chest. “If you had to, could you?”
“Would you,” Arthur automatically corrected.
“Would I?” Mordred’s pitch went comically high. “Nooooooo! Would you!”
Arthur gave him a look, one that Mordred immediately leaned in and mimicked with a giggle. “Would I, Arthur Penn, a man far removed from the ancient past, cast a boat full of babies into the ocean? Absolutely not.”
“What if Merlin told you to?”
He’d never had to. History hadn’t played out like that. But Arthur couldn’t tell his young son that he definitely knew it hadn’t happened because he couldn’t even explain his own past and all that entailed. All Mordred knew was that his father was named after King Arthur, so that meant he’d been named after Mordred. Because they were father and son and that was how it was supposed to be. He didn’t know that in another life they hadn’t been related and that the first time Merlin met Mordred he had helped save him.
“Nope.” Arthur popped the ‘p’. Out of Mordred’s sight, he set the book on the ground. It was time for a better story anyway. “Not even then.”
“What if Merlin did it?”
“Listen, let me tell you about the—“ He almost said ‘the Mordred I knew’ but luckily stopped. Instead, he says, “—the story I heard. It took place when Uther was still king. The first time Arthur met Mordred he was only a little boy…”

For the OC Ask Game, about Ernest
4. "How much weight do they give to others' opinions of them"
It depends on who it is and what their opinion is, really. On one hand, Ernest couldn't care less about what people think of them, but on the other? He cares deeply and is easily made to be self-conscious or pissed off at certain assumptions or types of attention.
Ernest's problem with introspection and self-actualization creates a weird disparity in his perception of age and what that means regarding knowledge and maturity. He is twenty-seven, Maggie is twenty-eight, and Eolann is forty-two (in 1898 when Ernest and Eolann first meet/during the canon events of RDO). Due to the vastly different lives they have all lived, he finds it incredibly difficult to wrap his head around the fact that he and Maggie wed only four years after Eolann and his ex-wife.
It also pisses him off when people imply that he had no choice in the things that have happened to him. He knows very little, but what he does know is that he has always had a choice. The things that have happened to him have largely been brought upon him by his own hand, and while that is a tough pill to swallow, that is one thing that he knows for sure. It's all on him, and his perception of people taking that fucked up sense of 'control' away from him is a great dishonour to him and his character, I think.
He also gets really riled up when people see him being friendly with Eolann and insults them by implying Ernest is being coerced into travelling with Eolann for "favours," if you know what I mean. Ultimately, these people don't know him or his feelings toward men; it's nothing more than an impersonal slash to the ego. But, Ernest, ever the idiot, cares not about the reasoning for such language (nor the additional implications) but locks in on the lack of agency aspect of it.
When it comes down to it, I think you can insult him all you want, but at the end of the day, Ernest has his claws dug deep into the concept of control and refuses to let go. You could insult his fashion, hygiene, general hair and beard maintenance, past actions, or those he chooses to associate and make acquaintance with... but god forbid you imply he didn't have a choice in any of those things.
Tumblr media
9. "When in pain do they take it out on others or do they keep it inside"
When he is sick or in pain, and it is nothing severe... he is so whiny about it. He is such a baby when he feels sick, sore, or achy. He will tough it out. He is perfectly fine, but you WILL hear about it the entire time.
Oh, but if it's severe? You know that thing cats and other animals do when they're sick, injured, or dying, and they hide away? He does that. When he is severely ill, Ernest will get sluggish and sleep in his tent for as long as Eolann will let him. The same thing happened when he was a child, and the same thing happened when he was with Maggie. If Ernest mentions feeling unwell or something hurting but then is followed by his prompt disappearance, that is when you need to worry. Do not leave him alone because if his condition gets worse and someone isn't around to see it, there is a substantial chance that he could just straight up die.
Ernest, however, becomes a massive dick when he is in wet, humid summer air. He quite literally turns into the worst person alive in that type of heat. That's to say, do NOT take him to Lemoyne in the summertime. It might just ruin whatever friendship you've got. So, if you value your relationship, it is not advisable. He will lash out for something as simple as breathing too loudly within earshot. Duality of man, I guess.
Tumblr media
10. "Their most defining moment vs your favourite one of them"
I have a number of options for this; however, I think one of his most defining moments is probably the first time he was arrested on assault charges during a fight with other patrons at the local saloon. He would have been somewhere around 21 when this happened. That night would have been the point of no return for him. He'd been gradually getting more and more dependent on alcohol. Over the course of the following year, Ernest would have taken on gambling debt and been arrested for a second time on the same charges. It would take two years for him to pay off that debt, becoming the final nail in the coffin of his marriage, leading to their divorce at 24. He and Maggie stayed together during that time as they both knew that if Ernest did not pay it off first, then he would have left Maggie with it, royally screwing her over probably for the rest of her life as someone who'd likely never marry again. It essentially marked the point of no return for his alcoholism and gambling addiction, even if it is not the moment in his life that pains him the most.
One of my favourite moments is when he sees Maggie again after many years apart. At this point in time, she was living near Emerald Ranch and doing pretty well, all things considered, especially for an unmarried woman in her situation. It was by no means easy, but she was content and happier than she'd been in years.
I imagine it happened outside the post office in Saint-Denis while he and Eolann were trying to book it out of the city after they'd committed some petty crime together. She'd been visiting on a whim for one reason or another and minding her business when Ernest flew past her before doing a triple-take and stopping dead in his tracks like a deer in headlights. The last time Maggie would have seen him was at least 6-7 years prior, and his appearance would not match her memories.
He'd be more tan, have a substantial scar on his left cheek from getting clipped by a hawk trying to steal his kill (and flinching into it like a dumbass), the shells of his ears are sunburnt (one is blistering), he would have also put on some weight and matured substantially in appearance. His moustache is messy (and more full), he has stubble everywhere else, and he is sweaty, covered in dust, has grossly oily hair, and got the backside of the blade of his hunting knife between his teeth and a flask under his arm, hands full of stolen goods as Eolann is baffled and crying to deaf ears about how they need to get out of there.
If Maggie wasn't sure already, she couldn't deny that the ring tied to his compass on Ernest's gunbelt was the one she helped pick out for him. It was him, alright. And he looked... well? Physically, he was worse for wear aside from his weight, but the distant and dissociative 'staring through you' look was nearly gone from his eyes, and he looked... alive? Full of life? It only took til 1901/2, I guess. (God, poor Maggie. Ernest is such a piece of shit, ain't he?)
I won't go into more detail about this interaction because this post will take eight hundred years to read if I don't stop myself.
However, in summary, they have a short discussion before parting ways for good. It really confuses both of them and hurts them equally as much as it brings them both closure and peace to know that the other is okay, even if in their own way.
Tumblr media
12. "How committed are they to their principles, and what might get them to abandon them"
Ernest has no spine. He is stubborn and bull-headed, but at the end of the day, you could twist him up like a balloon animal if you tried hard enough. It doesn't take much more than earning his trust and loyalty to fundamentally start changing him.
After meeting Eolann on their way out of custody, awaiting execution at Sisika, they run together out of necessity before eventually growing fond of one another and, with time, inseparable. The man Ernest has become is not the same as the version of himself who rolled over and accepted his arrest only 2-3 years prior.
Because I am a sucker for the "I thought you were dead" trope, I think that would be a perfect example of what would prompt Ernest to abandon his principles. If he thought Eolann was killed, and god forbid, killed because of him, Ernest would rapidly devolve into becoming a danger to both himself and others. He would, unfortunately, do downright heinous things for that man.
Tumblr media
25. "What's the worst physical or mental pain they've ever endured"
I have only a lame and boring answer for this one because I feel like I have already talked about a good chunk of the things that weigh heavily on his mind.
I think (one of) the worst physical pains he has experienced in his life is either the laceration to his face as his old friends (god rest their souls) were poking and prodding at him, trying to assess the actual damage from under the buckets of blood pouring from his face. (Facial wounds, even small ones, bleed like no other. It's one thing to know that and another to experience it, trust.)
That... or one of the (probably multiple) times he's needed to get someone to dig shrapnel out of his body; take your pick. I think they're both awful for different reasons.
In general, though, I think Ernest is very accident-prone. His accidents, however, tend to be relatively manageable. I always joke about how if it didn't seal his fate, I'd make it canon that he became victim to an alligator's death roll down in the Bayou because of how god-awful I am at not dying in the swamps when playing online.
Tumblr media
29. "What criteria do they use to assess others' character"
Vibes, mostly. The man doesn't even know himself, and you expect him to know others? I think he has good pattern recognition even if he doesn't know it, and he chalks it up to intuition. He doesn't follow a set of criteria regarding who he associates with because if he did... it would make him a massive hypocrite (if he wasn't one already). He associates with people who have done (and continue to do) things he likes to think he vehemently opposes.
I am... staring directly at Eolann and his violent tendencies and absolutely broken honour metre. I'm not entirely sure if they make each other better or worse, but something sinister is happening. It's like when you're in grade ten chemistry class trying to figure out what is happening in that damn flask because Things Are Happening, but it sure as hell isn't what it's supposed to be doing.

HI HI BLUE!!!
Imagine with me: Silver & Gold has settled down in the past by the Chaotix's Agency for a while now, they've been adapted quite neatly.
So Gold, moved by her passion for literature, decided to start writing her own works, she posts them on Sonic world's equivalent to AO3 and Wattpad.
Nobody knows that except for Vector, who discovered by sheer accident one day and the naturally Supportive Dad™ he is decided was better just let her warm up.
Meanwhile, Amy & Shadow are the most avid readers of her stories, but again, none of them knows about that.
Maybe Silver knows about this "anonymous writer"... Thanks to Amy he read one or two works...
Hello ^-^
Awwww, Gold the fanfic writer! I imagine she's a huge fan of like, a very sappy romance drama series that busts out a new pulp fiction book at the regular. Something like Twilight intermixed with the romantic bits of Titanic and a dash of TLC reality TV shows, but even worse in its romance and drama and sappiness and also in book form, if that makes sense. She'd love coming up with stories of her own for such things, since this girl adores anything with romance and drama! I figure she's doing her very best to hide this from the rest of the Chaotix, but since I can't imagine they have more than one computer in that household (and like, one of those super old ones with the massive cube for a screen, one of those loud laggy keyboards and a big mouse, and a giant box with its technologies(?) that you can stick the CDs in and stuff), it's a struggle to keep it all secretive and to herself. All her files have very boring mundane names like "Expenses spreadsheet" and "To-do list [date]", which allows Vector to open one by accident. But he wouldn't say anything; Silver has made it Very Clear that teasing Gold for anything is off-limits, haha. And even if Gold is suspicious that Vector knows her secret, she wouldn't dare say anything either, so that secret is safe for now! Silver meanwhile might have an inkling as well since he can pick up on her thoughts on occasion, but since he is not interested in that series at all, he doesn't care too much. As long as his big sister is having fun <3
Considering the fact Gold would have a completely mundane name on her social media as well, none of her readers can trace it back to her; at most, Shadow and Amy would know that she is also a fan of said Sappy Romance Drama in real life, but that is about it. Imagine her horror if Amy recommends her a story that she wrote herself!!

There was a post I saw not too long ago that’s done amazing things for my mental health and basically it just boils down to “Yeah I’m irrationally upset about this bc I’m crazy. There’s smth wrong with my brain and that’s okay.” And I’ve been reminding myself that every time I start spiraling over smth I’ve made up or finding myself checking and rechecking that I closed my door all the way, like yeah the reason I think this is bc my brain doesn’t work right and that’s okay. (That being said I don’t have ocd which seems to be what this post is about, this is just my experience with smth I saw that’s helped me)
being self aware suuuucks like yeah this thought pattern/behavior is stupid and pointless and a symptom. i know this. [does it anyways

HVAC Repair: The Ultimate Guide to Keeping Your System Running Efficiently
Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are essential for maintaining indoor comfort in homes and commercial spaces. A properly functioning HVAC system regulates temperature, improves air quality, and ensures energy efficiency. However, like any mechanical system, HVAC units can develop issues over time.
Timely HVAC repairs are crucial to preventing costly breakdowns and extending the system’s lifespan. Ignoring minor issues can lead to major failures, skyrocketing energy bills, and even health hazards due to poor air quality. In this guide, we’ll explore common HVAC problems, troubleshooting tips, professional repair costs, and maintenance best practices.
2. Understanding HVAC Systems
Components of an HVAC System
An HVAC system comprises several key components that work together to regulate indoor temperature and air quality:
Thermostat: Controls the temperature settings and signals the system to heat or cool as needed.
Furnace: Heats the air during cold seasons.
Air Conditioner: Cools and dehumidifies the air.
Ductwork: Channels heated or cooled air throughout the building.
Vents and Registers: Distribute air evenly across rooms.
Air Filters: Remove dust, pollen, and other contaminants from the air.
How HVAC Systems Work
An HVAC system operates by cycling air through heating and cooling components before distributing it through ductwork and vents. The thermostat acts as the control center, signaling the system when adjustments are needed. Proper maintenance ensures smooth operation, but wear and tear over time can lead to malfunctions.
3. Signs Your HVAC System Needs Repair
Knowing the warning signs of HVAC problems can help you address issues before they become costly. Here are some common indicators:
Unusual Noises
Banging, clanking, or screeching noises can indicate loose or broken components.
Hissing sounds may suggest refrigerant leaks.
Clicking sounds might signal electrical issues.
Weak Airflow
Clogged air filters, duct obstructions, or a failing blower motor can reduce airflow.
Inconsistent airflow between rooms could indicate ductwork problems.
Strange Odors
Musty smells suggest mold or mildew in ducts.
Burning odors may indicate an overheating component or electrical issues.
Inconsistent Temperatures
If some rooms are too hot while others are too cold, the HVAC system may need recalibration.
A failing thermostat or blocked vents can cause temperature imbalances.
4. Common HVAC Problems and Their Causes
Dirty or Clogged Filters
Clogged filters restrict airflow, causing the system to work harder.
Regularly changing filters improves efficiency and air quality.
Thermostat Issues
Incorrect settings or faulty sensors can prevent the system from functioning properly.
Upgrading to a smart thermostat can enhance performance.
Refrigerant Leaks
Low refrigerant levels can cause the AC to blow warm air.
Leaks require professional repair and recharging.
Electrical and Wiring Problems
Faulty wiring can lead to system failures or fire hazards.
Regular inspections help prevent electrical malfunctions.
Frozen Evaporator Coils
Dirty coils or low refrigerant levels can cause ice buildup.
Turning off the unit and allowing it to thaw before calling a technician can prevent further damage.
5. DIY HVAC Troubleshooting Tips
Before calling an HVAC technician, you can perform some basic troubleshooting steps to identify minor issues:
Checking and Replacing Air Filters
Dirty filters are the most common cause of HVAC inefficiency.
Replace filters every 1-3 months for optimal performance.
Inspecting Thermostat Settings
Ensure the thermostat is set to the correct temperature mode.
If the thermostat is battery-operated, replace the batteries.
Cleaning Vents and Ducts
Dust buildup in vents can obstruct airflow.
Vacuum vents and consider professional duct cleaning if airflow remains weak.
Resetting Circuit Breakers
If the HVAC system won’t turn on, check the circuit breaker.
Resetting the breaker may restore power if there’s been an overload.

maybe i'm dumb, but i just don't understand the point of unsweetened coffee creamer??? isn't coffee creamer the efficient vehicle for delivering milk AND sugar to your coffee in one easy splash?
and if you DON'T want the sugar part of the "milk and sugar" formula that is coffee creamer... then don't you just put the milk of your choice into your cup???
#this post brought to you by:#there are only 2 kroger stores in this whole stupid-ass city that carry the kroger brand coffee creamer i like. and they've been#OUT OF IT for 6 weeks now!!! so i unfortunately had to take my chances with something else! and the grocery stores are just#24/7 crowded from pre-Thanksgiving until post-Christmas!! everyone is shopping in the stores ALL THE TIME!!#anyway the coffee creamer i grabbed said ''toasted marshmallow'' and ''coconut milk'' but i didn't notice it also said ''unsweetened''#so it's just vile. it separates if it sits for more than 4 minutes so it comes out chunky. but if you shake it... it just comes out as foam#it tastes like nothing... but then you get a weird back-of-the-throat aftertaste of burnt marshmallow (not toasted-- there's definitely#a smokey component to it)... and it's unsweetened. so i'm just drinking shit-tier coffee with flavorless foam on top that gives the#impression that you've dosed your coffee with liquid smoke#it's awful lmao#i dug out my torani syrup sample packs that i was using this summer to make ''italian sodas'' and i'm using those as my sugar#and it's clear why i've got leftover syrups: some of them are weird and horrible flavors. there's one that gives the distinct impression#of gingerbread. which is great if you like gingerbread. however! i do not!#im dying scoob#(the kroger coffee creamer i like is oat-based and does NOT leave any residue or ''bits'' at the bottom of my cup) (ALSO! it gives#me 30 days to use it; whereas most creamers tell you to finish it in 7-10 days. i can't work under that kind of pressure tbh.)
