i hope buck, eddie and shannon are haunting helena through chris rn. i hope when chris rolls his eyes and snarks back helena freezes reminding her damn well who his father is. i hope when chris bites the inside of cheek and is suddenly really interested in his hands when he’s nervous about something helena scrunches her eyebrows in confusion bc she swears she’s seen it before and her eyes widen as she recalls eddie’s friend, the same friend who was there when they picked up chris, having the same mannerisms when eddie and his team came to texas. i hope when chris asks for the ice cream from the store 45 minutes from their house near the park and he picks rocky road helena swallows roughly bc shannon would do the same when she missed eddie and/or was sad. i hope she’s violently reminded no matter how much she pretends, that child will never be hers in the way she’s so desperately been trying to make it be for years. i hope she’s reminded of her damn place in chris’ life.

i am so excited because as messy as this is, it humanizes eddie in such a wonderfully complex way. a beautiful disaster, in a way. we have seen him consistently heal with everything. his friendship with tommy, being able to talk about sex so openly, being happy and carefree and playful

but the season was very clear from the start: the ghost of shannon will always haunt eddie. he has not gotten the chance to process it. he has tried to deal with it (s3) and continue to deal with it (s5), but the shannon of it all was always pushed aside, needling deep into his psyche and his heart

and as soon as he saw shannon's face. not shannon, but the ghost of her, the idea of her, front and centre and alive, everything came to the surface, and his love for her, his love for the idea of her, the magic of what she brought to his life when everything was new and good, was so strong that he just, risked it all

and it's all for the wrong reasons sure, but in that moment, eddie diaz wanted to cling to the part of his life where shannon was alive and breathing, and he made the step to lie and say he was single

he lied, and he's on the way to cheat

but by god, for the first time in a long time, eddie diaz is doing something, selfishly, for himself

“I wish you could see the way Chris looks at him. Like he’s always been there. Like he belongs with us. And maybe that’s what scared me most—because I think he does.” 

Eddie sniffed, brushing at his eyes again, gentler this time. He looked down at the paper, his fingers curling slightly around the edges.

“I used to think love had to be earned through suffering. That if it wasn’t hard, if it didn’t tear you apart, then it wasn’t real. But Buck—he just…” Eddie let out a laugh. “It’s funny, you know, but Chris actually looks like Buck a lot these days. You grew the kid and he has the audacity to look like his dad’s best friend. I don’t know. Maybe that means the universe is trying to tell me something. Jesus, Buck would love me saying that. He gets really superstitious and—it’s honestly adorable.”

Eddie chuckled, the sound light despite the emotion thick in his chest. “I think…I think he believes in love the same way I used to believe in duty. Something unshakable. Like the way true love exists in fairy tales. I wouldn’t be surprised if he had a whole thing about soulmates, too.”

He looked down at Shannon’s name again, fingers ghosting over the DIAZ etched into stone, the grief and sorrow melding into something bittersweet.
