My favorite arthurian movies (part 2/3)
More details (and youtube links for the less known movies) under cut. Some of these I love, some are so bad so good, some are beautifully epic, some are just funny.
New Adventures of a Yankee in King Arthur's Court (1988) (youtube part 1) (youtube part 2): No idea what the characters are saying as this is in Russian, but the visual of this movie is gorgeous and so is Mordred.
A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (1989) (youtube): Lovely Connecticut Yankee movie with a girl as a protagonist. It adds some new scenes, very heart warming and cute and has a scene of Guinevere dancing.
Guinevere (1994): Loose adaptation of Persia Wolley's Guinevere books. A bit boring, but this is the first time we see Guinevere as protagonist. Focusing on her marriage with Arthur, inhereting her father's kingdom and her love for Lancelot.
A Young Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (1995) (youtube) : Another Connecticut Yankee movie, the quality is not as good as others but it has an interesting Galahad (who often is not in movie) and an amazing Morgana.
First Knight (1995): Romance movie between Lancelot and Guinevere.
A Knight in Camelot (1998): The last Connecticut Yankee movies, one of the funniest ones too, with Whoopi Goldberg as the protagonist.
Quest for Camelot (1998): Only slightly arthurian, as the focus is on two new characters (one is called Gareth but has nothing to do with Sir Gareth). Set during Arthur's kingdom. Animated movie about the daughter of Lionel returning Excalibur to King Arthur.
The Excalibur Kid (1999) (youtube): One of my favorite movies and one of the only movies where Morgause is present. Focusing on a kid ending up in King Arthur's times as future king of Camelot because Morgause feels he is easier to manipulate than Arthur, the real king. I shipped him and Arthur.
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (2002) (youtube): Animated short movie on Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, visually beautiful, following the story very loyally.

Rewatching older classics and I keep being jumpscared by now very famous actors. What do you mean Daniel Craig, the James Bond and fantastically gay detective, was also the bowl haired knight in a movie about a cowardly 15 year old baseball player being sent back in time to King Arthur’s court. Why is there a Scarlett Johansson in my Home Alone 3. I did not order this.

Saw a bunch of posts recently talking about how saying sorry all the time can be a sign of emotional abuse and, as a Michigander living in New England, here are a few other super common meanings of sorry:
• move.
• you're in the way.
• pay attention, bro.
• what are you doing?
• who the fu-????
• that's my bad.
• thanks.
• excuse me.
• no, I don't have time for this.
• do I know you? No.
• don't judge me, I'm doing something.
• no I don't need help, let me struggle in peace!
• I am in the way, but I noticed you, so by the laws of sorry you can't be that mad.
• STFU you stupid-ass mfing bloated bag of beef.
• that was a nice warning, don't you see the twitching? Bout to go off on a bitch.
• that joke was mean but funny and accurate, I just didn't mean to say it out loud.
Sorry is an accusation, a command, and a judgement. I cannot help the disdain in my eyes when a New Englander laughs at me for what they think is apologizing, and I turn on the translator cus they ain't gonna get it, so I sound kinda deranged as I ride by like: "sorry, sorry? Sorry, 'scuse me- I mean wtf, move! Are you stupid? You're walking down the middle of the path on a blind curve you dumbass donkey." And then they laugh and move, like what?
Sorry is the prequel, a call for attention, a chance to get yourself right before it's God you're explaining yourself to. No more pity replies, just move yourself or your cart/buggy/carriage out the way, and ope, sorry is all you'll have to hear.

I wanna write a really mundane magic reveal.
This has definitely been done before (please send fic recs) but I’m procrastinating and really want to write it.
Literally nothing is happening, Arthur is having a bath, Merlin is tidying up in his chambers one night and everything is basically fine.
Arthur asks Merlin how he manages to always get the bath water perfect and Merlin jokingly says “must be magic” while he’s distracted, Arthur stops and starts thinking about all the fallen tree branches, how his armour is perfect and even if Merlin is late, his food is always hot.
So Arthur realises Merlin is a sorcerer, but not a very good one if all he can do is boring stuff with chores. And if he’s not using magic to defeat all the bandits, it must be because he can’t defeat all the bandits. Not that he’s trying not to die or anything. In fact, the thought of killing Merlin, or of Merlin being punished for his magic, never even crosses his mind.
Arthur shrugs, because Merlin made the joke before, it was just his fault for not noticing it, also his father is still king, so it’s probably for the best that Merlin never said anything, and he tells Merlin to be careful about his magic and to only use it if he’s locked the door.
Merlin’s too shocked by the easy acceptance to panic, so he’s just like: “you’re cool with it?”
And Arthur, oblivious but in love, is just like “well, at least you’re good at something.” Because, sure, Merlin isn’t powerful, but he’s not about to piss off the guy who gives him perfect baths. Then he’s like, “maybe figure out how to lie so my father doesn’t find out about you though. We can figure out the ban once I’m king”
I’m picturing this to be in early/mid season two. Morgana never turns evil, Merlin helps her with her magic because I said so.
So Merlin and Arthur have a while for Arthur getting used to Merlin magically lighting fires, sharpening his sword, adding protection charms to his armour, heating his baths, removing stains from his clothes and even putting them back to being like new if they lost buttons or anything.
Then they go to find the dragonlord, Balinor survives also because I said so.
Merlin tells Arthur Balinor is his father in the inn before they meet him. Arthur is a little worried for Merlin, but ultimately happy for his friend.
Then Merlin uses magic infront of Balinor and Arthur after Merlin told Balinor that he’s his son. Balinor shoves Merlin behind him protectively and Arthur is confused, “why would anyone assume he’d hurt Merlin? It’s Merlin. If anything, he’s more useful as a servant and more honest as a friend since he found out about the magic.”
Balinor is floored by it, and starts treating Arthur a lot better. Arthur gets to ask about pre purge stuff, Balinor tells him a bit about his mother from when her parents visited his when they were kids, then about Ygraine visiting the dragons and how she, Balinor and others in court at the time were friends.
They take him to Ealdor after the dragon is defeated/banished and Arthur looks over at Merlin and realises “oh my god, you summoned the wind.”
And Merlin is like, “yeah? No big deal.”
So Arthur is left wondering why Merlin is downplaying what he thinks is the strongest bit of magic he’s ever done. He comes to the conclusion that Merlin is embarrassed that it was a fluke, he tries to reassure Merlin that he can always practice and learn to do stronger magic like that. Merlin is confused because the wind wasn’t strong magic?
Balinor realises what’s happening and decides he wants nothing to do with it so he stays quiet. (He’s already sensed a lot of power from Merlin, so he knows he’s strong.)
Anyway, they keep going to Ealdor. Merlin still hasn’t caught onto the fact that Arthur thinks he’s a weak sorcerer, Arthur hasn’t caught on to Merlin being strong and just thinks he’s a little bit embarrassed about not being that strong of a sorcerer.
Then they get to Ealdor, everything is great for about two days until it starts down-pouring. Enough rain to flood the village and everyone is worried because Cenred or Lot(?)(I don’t remember when Cenred dies in canon) isn’t going to do anything because he just doesn’t care so their fields will flood and they’ll starve and not be able to afford taxes.
Arthur tries to reassure Merlin that it’s okay, but Merlin just hums. He asks Arthur if they can still lie and say they were on a hunting trip if he does something about the rain, Arthur tells him he shouldn’t push himself or anything, but Merlin says he won’t and Arthur trusts him so it’s fine. Merlin then goes outside and casually stops the rain, clearing the clouds and moving the rainwater into the river.
Arthur is shook.
Then he’s got to realise that Merlin is powerful, but again he never lied about it so he can’t really get mad, so he decides it’s better to just be shocked and carry on as usual until he gets used to the idea that Merlin is stronger than he looks.
There’s also a little bit of a bi panic in there somewhere because Arthur definitely has a thing for competency. We all saw his crushes on Gwen, Merlin, Lancelot, Mithian if she wasn’t just the wrong person for him, I’m pretty sure Percival too. There’s definitely others I haven’t noticed or forgot about. You get the idea though.
He sees Merlin being good at Magic and is suddenly very confused by the feelings he’s too emotionally stunted to recognise. Even if it’s just small things, Merlin is good at something and ‘what the hell happened to the bumbling idiot who forgot to hand him his sword the first day? What? Huh?’
Then after he accepts Merlin is really good at magic, he decides: “great! He can train with me now! :D” and he drags Merlin out of Camelot to spar which is basically just Merlin teaching Arthur how to defend himself against magical attacks. Arthur thinks he’s helping Merlin to protect himself because ‘if all he can do is wind that’s hardly an offensive attack so he needs more help mastering that. And considering no one else knows, it’s my responsibility to make sure he’s safe if he ever needs it.’
Merlin is just glad to be accepted and that Arthur is willing to learn how to protect himself against the numerous magical attacks every week so he lets Arthur think whatever he wants about why they’re sparring.
But yeah, there’s minimal trauma, it’s not a big deal and they get the happily ever after they deserved.

Cryptic God!Merlin & Number1Worshipper!Mordred au - part 2
(Kinda an escalation of this post ) the Magic ban was lifted for a while now and they definitely has encountered a few weird sorcerers/Druids who is in Emrys cult.
So, when Arthur first meets calm and collected Mordred, a druid who asks to be knighted instead of licking Merlin he is very relieved like OH GOD YES FINALLY A NORMAL ONE
Arthur: I am so happy you are not one of those who starts hyperventilating and mentally screaming straight into Merlin’s head the moment you see him.
Mordred, offended: Why would I do that
Later, when Leon and Lancelot are giving him a tour:
Mordred: I understand why some people will get excited at the sight of Emrys, he is a god to us after all, but seriously, only immature fans get over excited like that; a real and veteran worshipper like me have a private hyperventilating session while praying to a personal Emrys shrine at night
Leon: You have a what in at what in what now
Lancelot: NOW, WE DONT HAVE TIME TO UNPACK ALL OF THAT
Merlin doesn’t like it when people treated him like a god and also not quite aware of the extent of his godly power himself, so, at first he avoids Mordred because even though Mordred appears calm, he can FEEL Mordred praying to him EVERY NIGHT.
Mordred: why do you fear me Emrys? I pray to you everyday. You are my idol.
Merlin: BECAUSE LAST NIGHT YOU PRAYED TO ME TO GIVE YOU STRENGTH BECAUSE GWAINE CALLED YOU A BABY AND MADE YOU REALLY SAD, AND TODAY I WOKE UP AND PUNCHED GWAINE SO HARD ON THE FACE BECAUSE HOLY SHIT YOUR PRAYER WAS SO STRONG???
Mordred: It works?
Merlin: IT WORKS. THAT’S WHY YOU NEED TO ST—
Mordred: does that mean if I pray hard enough, you will be able to shoot fire beams from your eyes like you do in those bedtime stories druid elders used to tell me?
Merlin: DRUID ELDERS USED TO TELL YOU WHAT!?!
Three days later, the knights encounter wild magical beasts in the forest during a patrol, as they are so sure they are kicking the bucket tonight, Merlin appears and shoots fire beams from his eyes, annihilating all the threats in 0.3 seconds. Mordred is overjoyed.
And at that point, Merlin has no choice but to adopt Mordred now because have you seen how the kid’s eyes lit up when he saw fire beams? This boy's puppy eyes will be his doom. If the kid asks him to shoot electric bolts out of his mouth, he will fucking do it. Merlin’s mom instinct kicks in yet again.
Arthur, while finally is relieved to see them getting along, soon realises that his hope to have Mordred as a Calm and Collected Magic user who will help his ex-manservant, current-Court Sorcerer, permanent-his idiot make less stupid decisions has flown out of the window, THE KID IS AN ENABLER.
Merlin: Imma punch that castle-size wyvern with my bare hands
Mordred: Yes. you can do it #king. This is going to be the best day of my life.
Arthur: NO YOU’RE SUPPOSED TO STOP HIM

Outstanding antagonists after Junior Year
This post is as much for myself for fanfic purposes as it is for any speculation regarding a Senior Year that may never happen and even if it does would be I think at an absolute minimum three years and more likely 4-5 down the road, but I wanted to round up the known potential antagonists remaining out in the world, roughly ranked in order of known hostility:
Chungledown Bim. Certainly the MOST hostile of opponents, we know he's not dead post-Boy's Night (whenever Boy's Night is supposed to fit into the Quangle) because he's on Fabian's nemesis alert.
Arianwen Abernant. Evidently she has recovered her magic, probably while Cassandra was corrupted into a more Nightmare King-ish state. She was pretty pissed at Aelwyn and Adaine the last time we saw her over the whole death of Angwyn thing; I somehow don't think being chased around Sylvaire by the vand will have improved her mood.
Bobby Dawn. The full extent of his involvement in the Junior Year plot is uncertain, but he sure as hell wasn't helping things. Also some real potential hate between him and the party over the Sandra Lynn thing; while Fig might be gone in a Senior Year I'm going to ignore that for these rankings and in any case Sandra Lynn still lives with Kristen and Adaine regardless, so I think that conflict would be born out. I also think there's a strong case for a clash of pantheons style story going on in the background, and Bobby here would be front and center on the Sol-Helio-maybe Galicaea side.
Kalina. I don't necessarily think Kalina actually IS a traitor to Cassandra the way that Kristen thinks and Ankarna thinks; I almost believe that her turning up at the end of Junior Year was a reaction to them deciding to hunt her, in fact. That being said, while I think Kalina is fully team Cassandra, I also think (and even understand!) that she is most definitely NOT team Kristen, who did let Cassandra kind-of-die and now is splitting her attention. So what's Kalina's play now? I think she's going to try to push for Bobby Dawn to add Cassandra back to the Sol-Helio-Galicaea pantheon, which would be to her a much more stable foundation to keep Cassandra alive on than Kristen.
The Automatons that are going to be hunting Fig. Yes, these are self-evidently a way to excuse that Fig won't be around to help out if there's a senior year and Emily chooses to not play Fig. They're also kind of hilarious, especially since they open up all kinds of questions like 'wait did Sandra Lynn spend her first year of adventuring fighting off killer statues of Arthur Aguefort?' They'd be higher except they're only hostile to 1/6th of the Bad Kids.
Gertie Bladeshield. Also only hostile to 1/6th of the Bad Kids at present, though Cassandra knows if any of them speak up in Kristen's defense she'll probably swear a vow of emnity to them too. Could probably be made up with via a sincere apology, or at least by setting her up with someone.
The Court of Stars and Princess Nara. Now we're into the dubiously hostile territory, because this might not lead to actual conflict, but if there IS a clash of pantheons between the Sol one and the Ankarna-Cass one then the most obvious fight other than Cassandra is over where Galicaea ends up. The members of the Court of Stars we met this season seemed much more, um, I'll use the word chilled out than Angwyn and Kir of last year, but it still feels like a mercurial thing.
Arthur Aguefort. I've been saying for a very long time that the only boss fight that makes sense for a Senior Year IS to have to fight Arthur Aguefort himself; it doesn't even necessarily have to be a 'he's evil' sort of thing, but could just be a 'you're the best party we've had in centuries and I wanna throw down'. He dropped some hints at it in the finale, of course, too!

Following up on what I said about how Post-Vulgate Gawain should utterly despise Arthur - having absolutely no reason to like him - there is an additional context from the Post-Vulgate itself that I forgot to mention in the last post and should be considered:
Gawain will kill you even if you're his kin
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Also, Agravain, as his usual self, will gleefully join in the crimes if he can)
So yes, Blood Relation will not matter to a murderous Gawain, especially if the slight was done when he was a young impressionable kid (King Lot's death was when Gawain was eleven, if you recall). By Post-Vulgate's own logic, Gawain should itching for an opportunity to kill Arthur himself.
Coincidently, this cements another reason why T. H. White's The Once and Future King's Villainization of Morgause (and Morgause being evil in general) is a very BAD idea: it removes the last vestiges of any reasonable justification as to why Gawain is even a Knight of the Round Table - or even a hero! - in the first place.
In the Medieval Narratives, the reason why Gawain and his brothers are part of Arthur's Court in the first place is because of Morgause' insistence, in defiance of her husband. Morgause is a supporter of her brother, not another one of his enemies.
Without Morgause putting in a good word for her brother and actually scheming to destroy him, Gawain and his brothers will be right there working with their mother all the way.
Ironic, as one reason why many modern writers love to villainize Morgause is so that they can reframe Mordred's incestuous birth as some sort of evil scheme to usurp the throne. In reality, that's a really, really impractical, nonsensical and completely redundant rationale - Gawain, Agravaine, Gaheris and Gareth ARE Arthur's closest male relatives and therefore, legally in the best position to take the crown. And all without the taint of incest, an abominable act that would disqualify Mordred from inheritence if made known.

Mc's father meeting with Arthur and as they handshake the dad pulls him closer and whispers "If I ever hear you have hurt my kid, even a tiny bit. I'll make sure that the next war that happens will put your head on a platter. Am I understood?"
Yeah, definitely the vibe MC's father would give! Unfortunately the parents couldn't attend the wedding, because their very precarious status at court, and because both them and Adrei are suffering the consequences of overusing battle magic.
But if MC's father had been there, while he wouldn't have dared to adress Arthur that way (he is, after all, in no position to threaten the king), the way he would look at him would convey his hostility, mixed with a huge amount of anxiety and fear for his kid.

So I wrote a merthur fic to my friend , Rémi, some of you may know them, I mentione them most of my post.
Anyway, after a conversation with them, I want to make something clear for everybody, queen didn’t needed to be married to the monarch to rules. So it’s legitimate if you see somewhere in fics that Arthur named Gwen queen even to he is with Merlin. It doesn’t mean that Gwen is fine with her husband having some farm fantasy with his manservant. It means that they are not married and that the king is asking her to pop out kids if she want to. Like that he would name them the heir of the throne or something.
Of course I forgot to said that if he named her to rule it’s because he have trust put in her and probably may use her as some friend. She’s not just there to produce child, that was a stupid ironic joke, my bad.
Plus Gwen is so smart and kind, she’s not just some kids producer that’s horrible. She is a queen. And Merlin may have the same quality as her I still prefer her being the queen, because at least there her opinion is valued, and Merlin can still be the court sorcerer.
