Some people at ILM/Lucasfilm made a short film using AI called "Star Wars: Field Guide" and obviously, it looks like garbage, but it's garbage in a specific way

You know that thing cheaper sci-fi properties, like TV shows or the b-movies that inspired Star Wars, do where their space animals are just dogs with antenna or normal animals with color filters over them? You know how Star Wars is NOT that, and has an array of unique creatures visualized with practical effects, stop motion, and CGI? Let's establish a baseline

That was nice.

Anyway here's what the advanced power of AI was able to come up with, in the space of two weeks

Wow! I'm really being transported to a magical land of strange and alien creatures here! Remember that scene in Attack of the Clones where they have to fight those creatures, and it's three totally different creatures we haven't seen before? Well, what if instead of that, it was a lion....THAT WAS BLUE???

At last: through the power of AI, Star Wars can match the visual effects power of a middling Sci-Fi Channel space opera show, or perhaps a "make a hybrid of two animals" early 2000s Photoshop contest.

It isn't just that it looks bad. It genuinely looks more crude than anything in Star Wars. Even when Star Wars was bad it was good on the "making creatures" front, and this looks utterly generic and, again, cheap. Star Wars usually goes too hard, making up aliens and creatures that show up for one second in the distant background. Did you know there's a giant mantis puppet somewhere in the cantina scene that you can barely see on screen? There was someone under the skirt (the giant mantis is wearing a skirt) controlling it for a whole day and it's just in the background. This is a franchise that had to resort to using Halloween costumes in A New Hope when they ran out of aliens, and this still looks cheaper and more put-together than that. Judging you

I guess I can post this now... this is the video to the new Therion single, out 2 days ago. As you can see even from looking at the preview picture, it's AI generated, by Stable Diffusion to be precise.

So, the latest one in the sad parade* of "bands I like that have no problem with screwing over visual artists to save a few bucks and have their heads in the sand about how it might impact them to legitimize this way of making content"? Thankfully no. Christofer wrote a very long text about his opinions on AI yesterday, which are generally very critical of how the technology is used. The video above was apparently made without his input, he hadn't specified that he wanted AI and was in fact a little shocked when he got the video and didn't want to use it. But it was also too late to order another video, so he figured he'd take it to avoid not having a video at all, and also use it to start a discussion. There had apparently been some AI stuff in the "Twilight of the Gods" video too at first, but he had made them take it out.

Being made with Stable Diffusion, the video of course uses stolen art. The bot is also doing its best as a "bias automation machine", as the meme goes, by accompanying a song about Turkish mythology with imagery of Arabs, Arabic stuff, and deserts, an inaccuracy that was apparently lost on the production team behind the video, but very much not lost on Turks on YT.

Anyway, Christofer would, based on his text, like it if people thought about the future of the arts for 0.05 seconds before jumping head first into AI, and also thinks we need to "strengthen the cult around real art" to keep human-made creations alive. And complain a lot, of course. Under videos like the one above.

\* Those are by no means the only bands that come to mind, but they are the biggest ones that I am in some way interested in and that I have seen use AI openly. A couple of smaller bands I like did the same, but I don't wanna hate on them on my blog since they're basically just some random people with a hobby, not public figures. I did try to be more understanding towards them, but I don't know if I really succeeded at that.

Adobe Photoshop VS Others

When someone once said, "Photoshop to the rescue, " one of my favourite dialogues from Gabblin's web series Office Politics, I hoped that there would have been some other equivalent alternatives to this software.

But to date, there has been none.

I last used it in September 2019, and since then, I have been struggling to get a chance to use it again.

Simply as I do not own a license.

But Photoshop is what it is. And Adobe should be super proud of it.

The Digital Doomsday of Jurassic Park (video essay by Artorr)

In the past couple of years, the use of artificial intelligence has become a hot button issue. The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes from last year clearly showed us that. However, it wasn't until watching a specific video that I realized just how serious this issue is, not just for the entertainment industry, but for society as a whole.

Released late last year, this documentary-style video essay, from the YouTube channel Artorr, takes a deep look back at the classic science fiction film Jurassic Park. Drawing parallels between the story of cloning dinosaurs with cutting edge innovations and the use/misuse of digital technology in today's world. As pointed out here, while innovative technology isn't inherently evil, when left unchecked, the abuse of it can lead to far-reaching consequences. It just goes to show that the themes and ideas explored in that movie are just as relevant now as they were back in 1993.

With word that AI is now being regulated, and with the industry beginning to turn against the use of it in film, television, gaming, etc., it seems like things are starting to look up. None the less, it's still important for us to make sure it does not replace those who work hard to create the art and spectacle we love. I feel like everyone needs to watch this.
