dear god Albus Potter do you utterly haunt my thoughts

Just… Albus in the cursed child, for as mixed as people seem to be on it… Albus as the certified middle child who doesn’t have the cloak, doesn’t have the map, who doesn’t even have a family name?

Can you imagine little Al (not yet Albus because that’s a name he truly goes by once he has Scorpius) tucking himself into the cracks of the door as he hears his parents talking, hears his dad say it would have been better to know they were having two boys so they could have just called him Sirius

Al, getting teased by his invisible brother, yet seeing so distinctly that his father chose James over him for their family legacy

Al, who grew up on the filtered advice of a distant, out of reach mentor who he could never live up to. Not like James with his fun, his humor, or Lily with her love and her girlhood.

(Albus, who will hear Cedric called the spare and understand far too well what it’s like to be of secondary importance)

Al, who out of all his siblings looks the most like his father, a reflection to every family friend of what harry went through and an eternal reminder to himself and the world that he will always be his father’s legacy (he will look in the mirror for most of his adult life and see his father before he sees himself)

Al, age 11, seeking comfort on the train platform as everything changes around him and getting another lecture about bravery that he doesn’t feel he has

Al becoming Albus on that train, when the boy who would become the most important person in his life actually asks him, asks him what he wants to be called

Albus, under the sorting hat, struggling but thinking about who he wants to be outside of his family’s legacy and getting put in Slytherin for it

Albus, who grew up on war stories and hogwarts hyjinks staying up half his first night because he’s afraid of his peers, but doesn’t want them to know that because he so desperately and conflictingly wants to both fit in and stand out

Albus, who is bad at flying, humiliating himself in front of his peers, because he isn’t harry but isn’t Quidditch player Ginny either… Albus, who all the adults see as Harry’s extension; Albus, who struggles with charms like Lily never will, who can barely make his matchstick silver under the blue eyed portrait in the room, who struggles to parse through the moving and unequal words of wizarding textbooks, who attracts bullies like flies and doesn’t yet have his mother’s hexes to fight back

Albus, struggling to write that first letter home, to tell his parents and little sister that he’s different from them; Albus who doesn’t even get to tell them because James tells them first

Albus, who doesn’t get a green scarf and hat until after the first snow, unable to parse if it’s the color, the fact that he’s the second born, or maybe just that it’s him that made it come later than James’ had

Albus, who goes back home for Christmas and faces his father’s disapproval for befriending a Malfoy, his father’s distrust and attempts to assure his morality for befriending someone harry assumes cruel and antagonistic

Albus, having to hold awkward conversation with Rose and Ron and Hermione, because neither of the kids want their parents to know they’re not talking (they find out eventually, and though they’re nice about it, Albus knows they’ll always put Rose’s feelings first)

Albus, who is suddenly assumed more malicious and problem causing than he ever was before, who suddenly is seen as a prime person to scot the blame off to when things go wrong

Albus, who gets chosen after his sister (“just like her mother!”) during the family quidditch match; who gets meaningful looks from his Uncle Percy; whose Christmas sweaters are no longer red but never green; who suddenly cant seem to talk to his uncle ron anymore, someone who used to understand what it was like to be James’ brother

Albus potter who stradles the line of too Potter for Slytherin and too Slytherin for his family.

Albus Potter, who’s ambition has been squashed out by bullies and disregard and distrust, struggling to find his identity in a house and world that is still in the midst of undoing decades as an indoctrination machine…

Really, how can people not consider The Cursed Child canon when these gems are in it?

And I love how in the new version Scorpius clearly says that Delphi is "old". He's so wild when he's jealous

I'm working on a layout of the new script where Albus and Scorpius are canonically confirmed, and I'm also translating it into Italian if you're interested

If you don’t want spoilers for the play stop here lmao

if you’ve seen the play live (or through…other means) you might have noticed that in the montage scene (where they’re going through the first 3 years at Hogwarts) there’s always a certain someone in the background. yep that’s right Delphi is always on the platform when Albus leaves for Hogwarts (there’s a video somewhere on tiktok and on here if u don’t know what I’m talking abt)

Delphi quite literally has been watching Albus (and the Potters in general) since the very beginning. Now did she know Albus would end up being the black sheep of the family? Probably not. But it just so happened to work out that way.

And I can’t stop thinking about how easy it could have been for Delphi to get Albus completely on her side. Him being an outcast with a strong desire to gain his father’s love? Oh yeah Delphi twisted that once before and she could easily do it again.

But who did Albus meet and bond with on the train purely by chance? Scorpius -most-important-person-in-my-life- Malfoy. If Delphi wanted a fighting chance at saving her father she needed to get rid of him. After Albus’ fall out with Harry, removing the obstacle that was his best friend (by whatever means) might’ve really done it.

In particular, I was really inspired by that one shot from Star Wars Episode I where you have Obi-Wan and Padmé standing between Anakin and Palpatine as a visual representation of the obstacles Palpatine needed to eliminate before he could turn Anakin to the dark side.

tldr; Delphi clocked Albus’ emo ass from the very beginning, and if it weren’t for Scorpius, she easily could’ve twisted his desire for his father’s love into something ugly.

There's such a fine balance between Scorpius knowing that Delphi can't be trusted but not being able to explain why, and also distrusting her simply because he's afraid she will take Albus away from him.

And it's something that is so interesting to look at.

Because, for the longest time, it's always been Albus and Scorpius. And he wants to like Delphi because Albus does, but he also doesn't trust her. And he doesn't want to be pushed out.

The emotional turmoil that he would have surrounding that isn't talked about enough.

everything that has changed in the extra shortened broadway version of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child:

i went for a friend's birthday last night and got to see the now newly shortened (again) cursed child play and there were a lot of differences. it was super fast paced and didn't leave the actors a lot of time to breathe or live in their characters as much. it was still so lovely but it's definitely more of a shell than it once was. that being said! my friend and i have compiled a list of all the things that have been altered (that we can remember)

i tried to put everything as in order as possible but my brain isn’t always very good at that!

ACT 1

The whole bit about Hermione thinking Ron confunded the driving examiner is cut

“People always look when you three are together” bit is cut

Albus and Rose happen upon Scorpius much quicker in his compartment

Rose doesn’t say anything when Albus is sorted into Slytherin

There’s been a rumor about Voldemort having a child every year Scorpius isn’t the first to be accused was cut from Draco and Harry’s interaction on the platform.

Albus doesn't ask "What's the counter-curse?" in the potions scene; significantly cut down

Wandlore dance is extended slightly (I think??)

When Albus casts “Incendio” on his Hogsmeade slip, he doesn’t follow it up with his “The ironic thing is I didn’t expect it to work. I’m terrible at that spell.” bit, just leaves after Harry speaks

Harry and Hermione walk into Harry’s office at the same time for the time turner reveal scene instead of Hermione walking in and Harry already being there

The time turner reveal scene is much quicker

When Albus meets Delphi at the stairs, his dialogue of "Who are you? Because this is my house…" is cut and she just skips into the "You must be Albus Potter." lines after popping in with her first few lines

Rose pulls Albus into the compartment this time to speak to him instead of just walking in front of him to speak with him

Dialogue between Albus and Rose is cut down a bit before he goes to get Scorpius off the train

I think the “You really are an enormous geek.” bit was taken out

When Albus asks Scorpius “Did Cedric need to be killed?, instead of saying “Easy question, easy answer: No.”, Scorpius quietly responds “No” before Albus continues on with his ramble

Draco doesn’t say “Voldemort is dead. Voldemort is gone”, his first line in this scene is after the Dark Mark mention

Amos doesn’t say “Of COURSE they do!” when Albus tells him that the ministry has a time turner

Albus, Scorpius, and Delphi (all transfigured into their counterparts at this point) don’t go into the telephone booth to go to the ministry; instead, Delphi/Hermione and Scorpius/Harry wander off one way while Albus/Ron goes the other way (the wrong way) and they have to call him back

No fishfinger sandwiches remark from Hermione to Albus/Ron :(

Bane is completely cut

They have Harry, Draco, Ginny and Ron all searching in the forest instead of just Harry then they split off only Harry being there.

Harry searches the forest instead of encountering Bane; Ginny has to come get him

Albus isn’t in his pajamas in the hospital ward when he wakes up, just his uniform

Harry comes to the realization somehow on his own that Scorpius is the issue “It isn’t a what that’s wounding him, it’s a who” (or something along those lines) and then bans Albus from seeing Scorpius

Ron and Hermione's encounter atop the stairs is MUCH shorter

The entire scene where Harry gives McGonagall the Marauders Map and instructs her to watch Albus and Scorpius is cut

No Bane mention in the Draco and Harry fight scene

If I recall, the lines “I don’t want to hurt you, Draco.” and “How interesting, because I do want to hurt you,” were said earlier in the scene because of cut dialogue

Ginny says “It’s been one minute. What did I miss?” instead of “I only left the room three minutes ago. What did I miss?”

When Harry, Ginny, and Draco go to McGonagall’s office, some dialogue is cut

ACT 2

The act starts with Scorpius on stage in this scene; he’s surrounded by the death eaters as they do the Voldemort Day dance around him instead of him being absent in this scene (only really good change in my opinion, it looked super neat and added to the story)

Scorpius is a lot more intimidating towards Craig when asking where Snape is (trying to take on this counterpart of Scorpion King)

Scorpius doesn’t hug Albus in the water when he reappears (very well could have just been a this showing thing)

Ron and Hermione’s “marriage renewal” scene is cut and changed to just them almost making out (big loss because that scene was amazing)

When Scorpius tells Albus he thought of him to fought off the dementors, Albus goes “Oh.” pauses and then goes , “I mean… Good,” softly

Dialogue is cut from the Owlery scene, including the “it’s time that time-turning became a thing of the past!“ silly bit

Ron doesn’t ramble too long at all about having drinks with Neville, it’s just one short sentence; added in that Delphi is an “older girl” (from the five hour cut originally) and Ron is all like “but go get ‘em I guess”

Ron says “specialis-draco-is-stupido” or something along the lines of that instead of directly repeating "specialis revelio" to mock him

Hermione unscrews the bulb instead of Ginny

No “Still, if I had to choose a companion to be at the return of eternal darkness with, I’d choose you.” bit, that whole scene is considerably shorter :(

Harry and Ginny have a bit of a longer chat in the church; Ginny goes “You're lucky to have me, aren't you?” and Harry responds with “Extremely.” (derived from the original 5-hour play but swapped with who says it)

Ginny and Albus don’t have their heart-to-heart in the church

Delphi's magic show (the fight at the end) is shorter and happens more rapidly than before

it's quite a lot looking at it all on paper. truthfully, i miss the old version. if anyone has seen this shortened version and can remember anything else and/or i'm misremembering anything, let me know! i know i was searching for this when the play was first shortened again so i hope this reaches others who might be curious!

I wanted to draw Delphi for some reason so I did this, idk it's my first time drawing her it could've been better ngl.

Maybe she's evil here, maybe she's not, idk if she has the same parents or different ones, maybe she's an intern at Hogwarts library, or a muggle one, I haven't really thought about what she could be like in my head tbh 😔

I do like the idea of Albus thinking she's really cool and Scorpius getting jealous, lol 🙂‍↕️

nextgen characters and their type of “delulu”:

rose: she believes she deserves everything in life, and naturally she’ll get everything she wants bc shes awesome. like if something doesn’t go her way it’s literally never her fault. she’ll blame it on the most randomest things before she ever thinks to accept responsibility. it’s not her fault dark reunion is out to get her.

james: he’s not delulu he’s just actually delusional. about literally everything. not in the funny haha way. it’s causing him so much strife, somebody please ground this poor man.

albus: i’m sorry but he does have main character syndrome despite going on and onnn about how he doesn’t want attention and he doesn’t want people looking at him. he absolutely does want it he just doesn’t want people thinking about him as only a side character to his dad’s plot. he’s differenttttt guyssssss he’s so much more interestingggg 🙄

scorpius: king of delulu. like every type of delulu. have you ever seen any interaction with him and rose (“she told me to go eat rocks she wants me soooo bad 🤭”). do you remember the nicknames he gave himself. do you remember how his go-to plan was screeching at a newborn infant when he and al got stuck in time. and then he just carries on with his life like that all ain’t nothing. this is all such unreal levels of delusion it’s almost inspiring.

delphi: also unreal levels of delusion but it’s not inspiring it’s just concerning. i think the entire plot of hpcc would go under this.

teddy: so delulu it’s sort of sweet. and it’s for sure completely in the way young teenage girls use ‘delulu’ when talking about their crushes like he will get excited if his crush sends him one 1️⃣ look. he’s convincing himself that the celebrity they thirst over sort of looks like him kinda 🤔. he’s doing the name compatibility and zodiac compatibility and mbti compatibility tests online. he’s getting a palm reading done to see if they end up together. he’s writing “me and x are getting married” 300 times in his diary as a manifestation.

victoire: i feel like delulu is a scale in the shape of a horseshoe, stay with me yall. like on one side you have very delusional and that’s like scorpius level of goofiness. and that’s like comfortable delusion, in the clouds sort of delusion. and then on the other side, you’re so hyperaware of everything happening in life and all of your flaws and problems that i wouldn’t even call it grounded, at this point you’ve sunk through the ground and you’re just dangling there. to the point where this is also being delusional but you think you’re too aware to be it, and on that side you have james. and the people who are the least delusional are in the middle of the horseshoe and walk along the balance. and that’s victoire except she’s holding on for dear life to not get knocked either way. smiling through the pain though.

lorcan: lorcan will say the most mortifying thing imaginable or act super embarrassingly against his will to someone and as a coping mechanism he will actively convince himself that what he did wasnt that bad or he will comfort himself by thinking of scenarios where he did something different, so vividly to the point where he almost believes it.

lily: she’ll see a professional stunt artist or a oil painter with years of experience or a seasoned dragon trick rider and she won’t ever be impressed because she genuinely believes she could do all of that. “my toxic trait is that i think i can” ahhh.

lysander: if you look at him without an overly friendly expression on your face he’s going to believe you’re an opp.

hugo: he thinks he’s a good dancer bless his heart

roxanne: she genuinely thinks she’s a suave jock but she keeps tripping on air

dominique: when caught out in a lie during an argument, she immediately switched to “believe what you want to believe” and exits. she’ll still believe she was right too. #womeninmaledominatedfields
