AMARE 🧲 MEMORY && DID
Amare has a strange relationship with memory. Being a DID system, and having memories split up between their other alters, there is almost a healthy balance of remembering and forgetting.
The system has become more and more self-aware of their memory issues as they've gotten older, and because of that, they've gotten better with sharing and restricting who knows what.
As the latest host of the system, Amare has been allowed access to most memories of their childhood and life, due to their maturity and ability to numb feelings so they do not do anything irrational.
The only ones in the system who have little to no access to the memory pool that the protectors have created are those who hold more detrimental and destructive symptoms of the body's various mental illnesses.
This, in short, means that Amare has an excellent memory because they have been allowed one.
This is mostly regarding other people, though. Amare will remember the smallest details of the people he meets, from years ago. When remembering his own trauma and childhood, the most common person to come forth and talk about it is one of the first alters in the system; River.
River was the host before Amare, and now that she is no longer the system host, she has taken up the management role of memory distribution in the system.
She makes sure no one knows what they aren't supposed to know, and makes sure those who need to know things, get the knowledge they need. Much like organizing files in an office drawer.
Kapan, on multiple occasions, has forgotten entire events happening in her life. She relies on Amare and his system's memory to fill her in where she forgets, as her amnesia is much less managed than theirs.
#✦ ━━ HC ; AMARE . ⧽ 🧲#i am prefacing this post by saying that i am also a DID system !!#i am basing amare and his system on my close system friend#as they are a huge inspiration to me and have been for the creation of amare's character in general#also if you need more clarification about this headcanon please let me know because it makes sense to me but i don't know if#it will make sense to others ...

The AMAR School was built in Iraq in 2016. Up to 30% of children who attend, have lost both parents to war or disease and the school boasts modern facilities, so children get the best start in life.
The school gives a clear focus on teaching kids to read. As Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis once stated: “There are many little ways to enlarge your child’s world. A love of books is the best of all.”

I don't think we truly need a Final Fantasy IX remake, but if we do get one, here are some things I'd like to see from it. Spoilers for a 25 year old PlayStation game, obviously.
Some of this is my own thoughts, and some is based on grievances I've seen laid out by other people.
Keep the majority of it the same. Seriously! The game is so good. I replayed it very recently and most of it still holds up. Keep it faithful. I love VII Remake, but we don't need that here.
Hopefully this one goes without saying, but do not make the style more realistic. Keep the somewhat cartoony aesthetic.
Definitely don't expand it to the point it has to be split into two (or more) games. Not just because having to wait between them would be annoying, but actually for solid narrative reasons: I just don't think there's a good place to split it. The best I've come up with is the Disc 2/Disc 3 boundary, but the first hour or two of Disc 3 would be a really weird start for a separate game.
Don't (significantly) change the Trance system. I know, I know, we all hate Trance, how impossible it is to control, the fact it gets wasted all the time. I know. But its mechanics have plot relevance. I'd maybe add a support ability that can be equipped to prevent a character from entering Trance, so that you can functionally grind the gauge to nearly full before bosses without wasting it on a random encounter. Or maybe just Low Tide as a counterpart to High Tide, so you can slow down the gauge.
Do consider changing how Trance is used narratively. Several characters get a signature moment in the early to mid story that automatically puts them in Trance. It would make sense that they can't enter Trance prior to that point. Perhaps add a signature moment earlier where possible so their Trance isn't locked behind too much of the game (hello Steiner), although don't bend over backwards to do so. This is one of the trickier asks, obviously.
Don't drop Freya from all relevance after Cleyra. She's such a good character and she's honestly wasted for the latter two thirds of the game. Give her something to do.
Keep Quina initially optional. And use they/them pronouns for them. I actually really like the way Quina isn't a secret character, but that you have the option to recruit them early. I don't think it would add narrative value to force the player to go to Qu's Marsh and recruit them on the Burmecia arc.
Give Amarant a bit more. Just some crumbs. He doesn't need a lot; in fact I daresay it might even be better to leave him as he is rather than overdo it, but a little extra spice would be great.
Have Eiko get over her precocious crush on Zidane. I'm fine with her having it. It's part of her characterisation. But by the end of the game I really think she ought to be over it, or at least moving in that direction. A really good place to work on this would be to utilise her time with Garnet at the Water Shrine towards this purpose, rather than it just being a couple of lines to just have Garnet avoid talking about her own feelings on Zidane.
Dive into Beatrix's character more. Her face turn is fine, if a little easy, but the game conspicuously doesn't take any time to discuss the fact that she's known for (and boasts about when the party first meet her) all the people she's mercilessly cut down. She expresses disapproval of the Black Mages mostly as a method, not for what they're being used to do. Give us more shades of grey.
What is Zorn and Thorn's deal? Were they always two parts of Meltigemini, as Kuja somewhat implies? Why do they have the ability to extract Eidolons?
Have Zidane do more with his tail. There's a fun moment where he uses it in the early game to hang from a ceiling. And then it literally never comes up again other than pointing out that all the other Genomes have it (and Kuja hides his). Just sprinkle some bits here and there that acknowledge our boi having an entire extra limb.
Back to the topic of the shrines, maybe let us fight all four guardians. Why not? The water guardian didn't even get shown. It's neat when the game lets you play as a party other than Zidane's, and it could also serve as a better precursor to fighting the four Chaoses in Memoria if you've already fought all four guardians. And of course, going back to what I said about Eiko, they can expand on the scenes of the other three parties. Amarant gets a banger little moment talking to the fire guardian. More of that.
And of course, expand on the plot in general. It can be done without just infodumping. There's a bunch of information from the Ultimania about e.g. the Iifa Tree that can be elaborated upon. And when I say "without infodumping", I mean without infodumping during the plot – you can have dedicated infodumps that the player can optionally seek out. Have readable terminals in Pandaemonium that give information on Terra stuff. Have a datalog-esque feature in the game, I promise, that kind of thing is fine, put your dislike of FFXIII down, XIII's problem, aside from the complaints being largely overblown, was that (some!) important stuff was left out of the main plot and put in datalogs.
Also explain some specific little details better. For example, what is the deal with Hilda being in Mount Gulug? How long has she been in there? The place was sealed up until Kuja took the Gulug Stone from Zidane about ten minutes prior. Was she on the Hilda Garde 1 and Kuja just transferred her when he got there? So why is the room there and fully furnished?
Fix Thunder Slash. Lol.
Make stealing rare items less heinously hard. Tantarian's Demon's Mail (if it is fought on Disc 2) and Hilgigars's Fairy Flute are pure suffering because you don't have access to Master Thief yet. Also change the Beatrix fights to only end after dealing enough damage to her so you don't run out of time to steal her items.
Make Tetra Master a bit less stupid. It's never gonna be Triple Triad, or even Queen's Blood, and I don't want it to be. It can stay its own thing. It can even keep some of the RNG, just reduce the impact of it, because it's ludicrous how RNG the game is. And make the card evolution more controllable somehow.
Inject more Chocobo Hot and Cold into my veins. I want it. I need it. Okay, I'm being dramatic (but I do really love it). That said, I wouldn't mind some more use for Dead Peppers. Add a few more bubbles and mountain cracks, perhaps more around the Mist Continent so you get to see them early on and go "I wonder what that is" if you're new to the game, but for balance, also give us a bit more help finding them because they do kinda suck to find. Oh, and make the Air Garden suck less.
Do... something? with Excalibur II??? I don't know what. Making it significantly easier would defeat the whole purpose I guess. But honestly, what is the point of it, you get a really strong weapon for one specific character who you might not even be using, right at the very end of the game, and you have to speedrun the entire game meticulously to do it. Maybe make it a BIT easier, and have New Game Plus so you can actually use it for something other than Ozma, idfk. And account for the game clock speed this time.
And for one final hot take, they don't necessarily need to remove the "Ooo, soft!" moment, but it definitely needs some adjustment if they keep it. Zidane apologising properly rather than brushing it off with "It's not like I did it on purpose" would be a start.

please sir.. can we have more city limits content 🙏🤲
I WORKED ON THIS way too much, absolutely overdrawn but IT WILL STILL SERVE ITS INTENDED PURPOSE which is to better introduce the main focuses of City Limits, the Strays! from left-to-right we've got Kieran Burroughs, Vincent Voronov, Deonda Germaine, and Amare Hunter. Their bios will be written out here!
LOTS of text down below vvv :3
Kieran is a 25-year-old burnout who, at one point, had a full-ride scholarship to a prestigious private school for his mathematics and engineering talents. He had always had a bit of a strained relationship with his father, who always demanded more of him no matter how well he did. While this did push Kieran to earn the scholarship he got to attend one of the best private schools in Gotham, it made their bond extremely weak. Kieran felt like he couldn't open up to his father and that he only ever cared about him when he got good grades. His sense of self-worth improved when he was able to start attending school, as they offered dorms, meaning he could be away from his father's oppressive expectations for once. This is where he met Vincent, and the two would begin a relationship. Vincent was always impressed with Kieran's intelligence, stating he'd never met someone who saw patterns and connections the way he did. Kieran flourished at school, and was especially happy to be openly gay now that he wasn't in his father's home. This, too, had been an issue - not one spoken out loud, but Kieran's father had ranted to him many times in coded language about how he was sensitive, or weak, and needed to meet a girl. Finally feeling confident in his school work and having a healthy relationship, Kieran felt as though his life was finally improving. One day, Vincent stopped coming to school and Kieran never heard from him. Thinking Vincent had abandoned him, Kieran fell into a depression and never fully recovered. As his grades slipped, his father told him to get it together or to "not bother coming back home". He dropped out of school, never returned to his father's home, and became homeless for a period of time. Kieran would struggle deeply with a sense of being inadequate and unwanted, and would unfortunately be taken advantage of for a short period by a lackey of the Sionis family that pimped him out. After getting out of that situation by running away once again, he would meet Amare at a shelter and the two would become close friends. Kieran chose to seek employment through illicit channels once again, working for low-level drug dealers to deliver stashes all over town. After years of being a mule, he had developed an uncanny ability to travel through Gotham without being seen, and quicker than anyone else. Most people would refer to him as a rat due to his frequent utilization of old subway tunnels and sewer systems to get around, but he always preferred Mouse, and this is what his close friends call him. He dislikes the term rat. This small operation was enough to fund his own vices, drugs to numb the regrets and trauma of his past, as well as support himself and Amare enough to have a small apartment. This was their setup from around when they were both 21 to current day. During that time they would meet and befriend Deonda, who doesn't live with them, but is a close friend. Now, Kieran works the odd shift at Pandora's Box, the night club Deonda works security detail at, never fully able to let go of the need to feel desired and wanted, even if it was for pay. To Kieran, he's got everything he needs - enough money, drugs, and boyfriends to keep him happy until, in his own words, "he gets popped in the back of the head by some psycho in a back alley".
Vincent is a 24-year-old heir to his father Valentin's crime syndicate. The Voronov's, Wayne's, and Sionis's are the three most wealthy family's in Gotham, and the Voronov's and Sionis's are in the same business - organized crime. While the Wayne's were typically very private people, the Voronov's and Sionis's interacted frequently. Vincent grew up around their only son, Roman, as the two were both only male children. Vincent and Roman despised each other, much like their fathers did, but not for the same reasons. Vincent struggled with a great deal of anxiety as a child and Roman would torment him. Vincent's father never stepped in because he believed he should fight back, and if he couldn't, then he deserved it. Vincent's life would be rife with this sort of messaging of cowardice. A defining moment in his childhood was when his pet horse became injured and Valentin forced Vincent to shoot the animal himself. Vincent would become extremely emotionally shut-off after this, including with his mother, Vaishali, whom he'd always had a closer relationship with. She taught him to speak Tamil, which his father forbid he learn because he only wanted him to know English and Russian. She noticed he was becoming depressed and suggested he be enrolled in a private school to get him out of the house. Until then, he'd been taught by private tutors, and had not been on his own before. Valentin was initially opposed, but was persuaded when Vincent's mother explained that they could send him to the same private school as many of Gotham's other elite children to make connections with their families. While at private school, Vincent struggled with relating to others, but his roommate, Kieran, seemed to be immediately friendly with him. He would find it strange, but enjoyed his company nonetheless. As they grew closer, he would realize he had feelings for Kieran, and that he was gay. To his surprise, Kieran felt the same way, and the two began a very private relationship with one another. However, Vincent was unaware his father had been keeping tabs on him by sending his men to keep an eye on his son, not trusting others not to attempt ransom kidnappings. Valentin would swiftly unenroll Vincent, send for him to return home, and end his studies. The only words Valentin spoke to Vincent when he returned was a threat that if he ever touched another man, he would kill him, and Kieran. That same night, Vincent resolved to kill his father. He entered his father's study with the same shotgun he was forced to kill his horse with and shot him in the head. Vaishali would discover the scene and after years of neglect and suffering, would help Vincent cover up the murder as a suicide. However, for his own sake, she sent him away to live with their extended family in India for a while to heal and be away from any fallout that might occur. Years later, in current day, he would return to Gotham with several goals. Reunite with his mother, find Kieran, and take over both his own family's criminal empire, as well as every other criminal operation in Gotham to posthumously prove to his father that he is the more powerful man. His interest in the more macabre aspects of crime would be piqued by news of the nefarious Scarecrow that had been tormenting Gotham since the death of Thomas and Martha Wayne some years ago, around the same time he was sent away. His unorthodox methods and his focus on fear sparked some inspiration in Vincent and he wished to harness the power of fear, as it had always been utilized against him by his father. This is what drives him to organize Kieran's friends into a proper "gang", whose goal is to infiltrate the inner workings of each of these facets of Gotham's criminal underground to tear them apart, and be put back together in Vincent's image.
Deonda is the oldest of the Strays, being 29. Deonda came from a very loving and supportive middle class family, having an especially close relationship with her veteran father. However, when she attempted to come out as a lesbian, she was disowned. Heartbroken, she resolved to join the military as a way to support herself, as well as to prove to her father that her identity isn't what defines her, but her work ethic and personal strength. She would make it her goal to be an Army Ranger. Deonda was showing massive talent in a short period of time, her physical strength and quick thinking making her a formidable soldier. However, she began to earn the resentment of several of her male colleagues, who would harass her day in and day out. Nothing was ever done, as it was seen as normal within military culture to be hyperaggressive to your fellow soldiers. Eventually, this group of men would push her to fight back and she was unfairly discharged. Resentful, but not broken, Deonda decided to try and make the best of a bad situation. She realized that, in all this time attempting to show her father she could be great, she abandoned her identity and stopped living for herself. Deonda began working security for local businesses, earning a decent living and enough to have her own place. She would finally explore her identity more by dating, and has been much happier ever since. However, since being discharged, she's struggled with a short temper. She finds it much harder to not snap at others after years of bottling up her emotions, and has taken to joining boxing clubs to blow off steam. She takes on the identity of "The Hound" when she fights, and this allows her to express that frustration and anger in a way she feels is healthier. One night, after walking home from her boxing club, she sees Amare getting mugged and steps in. After neutralizing the muggers, she offers to walk Amare home and he introduces her to Kieran, who's extremely grateful to see Amare home safe. Kieran and Amare swear to Deonda that they both owe her from now on, and the three have had a very good friendship ever since. Genuinely I would argue Deonda is the most stable and least destructive of the Strays, and because of this, she often butts heads with Vincent because he encourages them to do a lot of reckless stuff. And she is VERY protective over Amare. Not as much Kieran, because Kieran's older and she considers him to be more aware of his actions than he acts. She loves him, but she wishes she could call him out on feigning a lot of his ignorance sometimes.
Finally, Amare, who is the same age as Vincent! Amare was an orphan, and would be moved around from foster home to foster home all throughout his youth. Despite being a bright, sweet child, potential adoptive parents were put off by the fact that Amare had a speech impediment and would often stutter. Eventually, Amare simply aged out of the system and was sent on his way at 19. A few years later, he would meet Kieran in the shelter and they would work together to earn enough money to get a place. However, Amare never wanted to involve himself in Kieran's line of work. He took odd jobs wherever he could, but always kept things above board. Kieran would tease him for being overly naive, thinking he could get anything done in Gotham without being a little dirty, but Amare never faltered in his belief. One night, when he was walking home from a job, three men attempted to mug him. He tried to fight back but couldn't, and was nearly beaten. However, Deonda showed up and cleared house, saving Amare's money and him. After walking him home, Amare introduced her to Kieran, and he sees Deonda as a big sister. Amare doesn't always like that Kieran teases him for being a "goody-two-shoes", but he still recognizes that he cares deeply for him and just wants him not to be taken advantage of. Though, this can cause some tension, as Amare can see how Deonda gets annoyed with Kieran's constant pessimism. Amare simply does his best to keep everyone happy, because that's the kind of guy he is and always will be!
AND THAT'S THE STRAYS! Over the course of the story, members might leave or new ones might join (like our friend the White Rabbit), but THIS is the Strays as they are in the mainline story! If you read this far, you're really fucking cool thank you!!

the hewitts (and eddie!) after the 1973 massacre
(here are eddie and thomas; context and full drawing below!)
in the novelization of the 2003 movie, it’s said that the fbi mishandled everything surrounding the 1973 massacre. the government declares thomas hewitt dead and makes no mention of his family—so it can be assumed that they’re legally dead too. this is in part due to negligence and also malpractice, as everyone involved just wanted to get the case done and over with. in 1981, the hewitts’ farmhouse is bulldozed over and the basement is filled with cement. erin hardesty is sent to a mental asylum, and the baby she saved is put into the foster care system.
obviously, the police didn’t kill thomas. everyone else aside from charlie came out of the massacre (relatively) unscathed. if that’s the case, where did they go? here’s what i’m thinking!
note: this is all pretty self-indulgent and made-up by me! this is just how i choose to continue the story.
so the hewitts are left with absolutely nothing after erin escapes. no money, no home, and clothes other than those on their back. this fact doesn’t really change when you add eddie into the story. in fact, erin gets into a fight with him while in the basement and ends up shooting his left pinky and ring finger off! so fun!
they’d be on the road for a long, long time afterwards, homeless and just trying to survive. i figure that they could’ve taken two vans (they had taken a lot of cars from victims over the years, after all) and lived in them during this time, fleeing the state. they’d be starving again, and i think that’d send them back into this constant state of intense stress, like the one they were in before the killing started.
luckily, eddie would have connections to people that create false identification. prior to meeting the family, eddie had a fake i.d. made with the name “jackson hughes”—the same people who provided him with that i.d. would offer falsified birth certificates and SSNs too. this would cost a lot of money, however, so i imagine the family spent a long while lying, stealing, and begging all across the country to gather it all up. of course i’ve never gone through the process of being declared legally dead and buying a new identity in the 1970s, so i have no idea how much it would cost exactly, but let’s just say it takes three years to save up all the money.
so by 1976, the hewitt family legally does not exist anymore, having been killed off and forgotten. that same year, the “howard” family moves to the small, rural town of elksville, wyoming. here are all the name changes i came up with! (for the hewitts who don’t have canon middle names, i made those up too) (can you tell i took on a lot of creative liberty here)
thomas brown hewitt → raymond “ray” paul howard
luda mae hewitt → evelyn ann howard
montgomery “monty” lee hewitt → ernest john howard
kathryn ann hewitt → noelle helen howard
henrietta louise hewitt → virginia “ginny” lynn howard
jedidiah paul hewitt → william lee howard
eddie amar reid → eugene joseph roberts
i actually don’t think the family would fully go back to their cannibalistic, murderous schemes. without hoyt there, and after all they’d experienced, i think luda mae (who was already the head of the family before, but would now have the final say over everything) would just want to be left alone? having her first son die would really take a toll on her, i think. perhaps she’d see it as god himself coming down and trying to teach her a lesson by taking charlie away from her (and taking thomas’ arm, too). so she’d order that the family just keep to themselves. “this is our chance to start anew.”
don’t be fooled, though. none of the “howards” are normal folk. i feel that they’d have an eerie reputation among their small number of neighbors, especially since they’re known for being aggressive with trespassers (i can see them having “TRESPASSERS WILL BE SHOT” signs on their fence). “eugene”, their “family friend”, would be the only one consisently seen around town, making minimal social interaction with other people. even he seems… strange, when you look at him. most folks choose to keep their distance.
design/character details:
eddie would cut his hair and grow out his facial hair in an attempt to separate himself from his identity as the rockstar killer. he's a much calmer person now, sort of more grown up? mellowed out? he still deals with violent urges, but he's more restrained. he takes his anger out on trespassers.
thomas grows his hair wayyy out to better obscure his face, since he can't wear masks anymore. i debated giving him facial hair, and settled on a patchy mustache and absolutely no beard hair. as a character, i think thomas would become so much more tired. for the first couple years, he'd be quicker to anger/frustrate. with the second chance his family's been given, he doesn't really want to interact with anyone from the outside world. he's done with it.
hope you all enjoy this i've been Thinking about it for a while........ buh bye!!!

DAY 5948
Jalsa, Mumbai May 31-June 1, 2024 Fri/Sat 12:14 AM
🪔 ,
June 01 .. birthday greetings to Ef Barun Sen .. and Ef Manish Singh Rajpoot .. 🙏🏻🚩❤️
Belated birthday greetings to Ef Amit Agrawal from Seattle USA 🇺🇸 .. for May 31 .. 🙏🏻🚩❤️
..
and all the wishes for the birthdays from the Ef family .. love ❤️
so each day is a learning .. what I learnt today stays .. and is replicated to others , and in particular family and the dear ..
I learn today ..
aaahh .. never mind ..
it be not of interest or importance to share to the other .. there is ever the reason for it .. and it be that , better to get the sharing of another that is greatly more proficient and valued than what you may have picked up .. and that is and has been the practice, at least for me .. I may be of the opinion that my learning could be of value to another .. but what if his or her learning is sufficiently more interesting than mine .. to assume that yours is the best is my fallacy .. and fear in many ways .. to be put down is an embarrassment .. ever .. you think you know all but there are millions of others better than you .. you m ay be the strongest physical presence in your environ, until you turn a corner on the street and discover that there are several others stronger than you .. your boast goes to roast .. !!
so ..

come to me .. yes , come .. but -

wait .. wait .. wait .. !!
I am never the best ..
and wait .. wait .. waaaiiittttt .. could be the utterance from AAA in film coming out of an Easter egg , giberiging :
'the whole country of the system is juxtapositioned by the haemoglobin in the atmosphere .. !!'
but it was just ad. libbed at the recording by me .. not making any sense .. Manmohan Ji just allowed me to say any junk at my request .. just so it looks like a proficient English speaking Anthony, when indeed he is not .. and merely just rattling off some BUMFF .. !
AND ..
AND ..
AND ..
you shall be surprised and shocked as am I , that it was mere junk spoken by me .. but the Ef Bushra on a research of the film Amar Akbar Anthony by the interview given by Man ji to an English journalist or writer found this :
The song ‘My name is Anthony Gonsalves’ begins with these lines spoken by Anthony when he emerges from the Easter egg – “You see, the whole country of the system is juxtapositioned by the hemoglobin in the atmosphere because you are a sophisticated rhetorician intoxicated by the exuberance of your own verbosity.” It is an almost exact quotation from a speech in the Parliament of the United Kingdom given by British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli in 1878. Disraeli (who was referring to William Ewart Gladstone) used the word “inebriated” rather than “intoxicated.”
wooooaaaahhhh !!! 😳
AND .. hang on ..
I had some days ago either a letter or a WhatsApp message from a cinema fan and a very proficient scientist, I think from the US, an Indian doing research on space , that the words :
'juxtapositioned by the haemoglobin in the atmosphere'
is a scientific fact .. that indeed there is this factor and a reality, scientifically proven, of 'haemoglobin in the atmosphere, being juxtapositioned,' or something like this .. and his purpose of writing to me was ..
how did mr B know of this fact years before it was researched ..
🤣

Yuri Ivanovich Pimenov, Disabled Veterans, 1926.
Walter Benjamin on World War I: “A generation that had gone to school on a horse-drawn streetcar now stood under the open sky in a countryside in which nothing remained unchanged but the clouds, and beneath these clouds, a field of force of destructive torrents and explosions, was the tiny, fragile human body.” “This immense wooing of the cosmos was enacted for the first time on a planetary scale, that is, in the spirit of technology. But because the lust for profit of the ruling class sought satisfaction through it, technology betrayed man and turned the bridal bed into a bloodbath.”

Education of the Movements of the Wounded Soldier,” from Jules Amar, The Physiology of Industrial Organization (1918).
Henry Ford on mass production: The production of the Model T required 7,882 distinct work operations, but, Ford noted [in his 1923 autobiography], only 12% of these tasks—only 949 operations—required “strong, able-bodied, and practically physically perfect men.” Of the remainder—and this is clearly what he sees as the major achievement of his method of production— “we found that 670 could be filled by legless men, 2,637 by one-legged men, two by armless men, 715 by one-armed men and ten by blind men.” ///
Walter Benjamin’s understanding of modern experience was neurological. It centered on shock. Benjamin wanted to investigate the “fruitfulness” of Freud’s hypothesis, that consciousness parries shock by preventing it from penetrating deep enough to leave a permanent trace on memory, by applying it to “situations far removed from those which Freud had in mind." Freud was concerned with war neurosis, the trauma of “shell shock” and catastrophic accident that plagued soldiers in World War I. Benjamin claimed that this battlefield experience of shock had become “the norm” in modern life. Perceptions that once occasioned conscious reflection were now the source of shock impulses which consciousness must parry. Nowhere was this defensive reflex more apparent than in the factory, where (Benjamin cited Marx) “workers learn to coordinate their own ‘movements to the uniform and unceasing motion of an automaton.’” “Independently of the worker’s volition, the article being worked on comes within his range of action and moves away from him just as arbitrarily.” Exploitation was here to be understood as a cognitive category, not an economic one. The factory system, injuring every one of the human senses, paralyzed the imagination of the worker, whose labor was “sealed off from experience”; memory was replaced by conditioned response, learning by “drill,” skill by repetition: practice counts for nothing.” Under conditions of modern technology, the aesthetic system undergoes a dialectical reversal. The human sensorium changes from a mode of being “in touch” with reality into a means of blocking out reality. Aesthetics—sensory perception—becomes anaesthetics, a numbing of the senses’ cognitive capacity that destroys the human organism’s power to respond politically even when self-preservation is at stake. Someone who is “past experiencing,” writes Benjamin, is “no longer capable of telling . . . proven friend . . . from mortal enemy.”
- Susan Buck-Morss, Dreamworld and Catastrophe: The Passing of Mass Utopia in East and West. Cambridge, Mass.: The MIT Press, 2000. p. 103-104

I coined a role..
AMETOR !
from amare (to love) + -tor (doer) → one who loves (as in cares, protects)
a term for an external caretaker & protector in a system who takes their role very seriously, gets upset when they can't protect the systems loved ones, or feels like their only purpose is to take care of the systems friends and family. May feel sad or useless if they cannot keep their loved ones safe.
I named it ametor because hyperoutcaretector is a heinous name but I adore hyper specific labelling
[FLAG ID: A scalloped stripe pattern with alternating soft pastel shades: lavender, pink, yellow, mauve, and cream. A centered symbol: a stylized hand reaching out with two pink hearts hovering above it, all outlined in a soft lavender-pink tone.]

#84: Wujing
Synopsis: In the span of two weeks, Raymond Reddington has turned Elizabeth's life upside down. He hijacked her first day of work at the FBI and sent her into a barely-thwarted mass-casualty terrorist attack, and then he used some small-fry assassin to lure in a bigger fish right under her nose; gaming the system to shatter the facade of a more powerful individual. It's been overwhelming and somewhat disorienting to be pulled into it all at once - and throughout this ordeal, Liz has stumbled across something so disruptive to her life that it seems like only Reddington could be behind it.
Liz has found a box containing dozens of passports and a loaded handgun. The implication of this discovery, given the pictures attached to every single passport are of her husband Tom, is that he - a mild-mannered grade school teacher - is secretly an international criminal. They've been married for a while now, and all this batfuck crazy underworld shit has only been happening to her in the last couple of weeks - so why wouldn't this be some bizarre power play by a known manipulator to further disrupt Liz's life?
While she conducts her own external investigation into that matter, she's called into work to take down a notorious spy-killer named Wujing. The episode actually opens with Wujing's latest attack in Shanghai where his network of cronies shoot a man down in the street, steal a digital collection of classified documents and cut the dead man's hand off to decrypt them at a later date.
The main wrinkle in this plan is that the dead man's fingerprint doesn't decrypt the lock. So Wujing has to reach out to someone to crack the encryption - which is where Raymond Reddington comes in, bringing an undercover Liz Keen along for the ride. It's tense, it's claustrophobic, and the stakes are raised higher still by a mysterious man holding an apple.
Thoughts: This episode continues a trend in Donald Ressler's character - Ressler is the no-nonsense, crew-cut FBI tightwad who doesn't trust Reddington and who's highly suspicious of Elizabeth Keen due to Reddington's insistence of working with her, which has led to him jumping the gun on numerous occasions to catch Reddington out. In this episode, he almost blows Keen and Reddington's cover because Reddington's tracking tag goes offline - Reddington manages to play this off beautifully, no harm no foul, but it's yet another example of Ressler being a dickhead. He's so by-the-book that he's almost sprung three different operations to capture three massive criminals, and he's being a massive douchebag.
But keeping with his other character archetype - the FBI attack dog who'll follow his target to the ends of the earth - this episode is Ressler's finest hour. Dude beats up like three bad guys, and when he's done, he's covered in blood; some of it is his own, some of it is theirs. There's a saying in Australian footy: "Bring Back The Biff", meaning "let players get into punch-ups and other scraps" which is a practice that has become significantly more penalized over the years than it used to be - Ressler brings back the fucking biff, let me tell you.
And this episode introduces a character who's going to become incredibly important later. A part of the plot involves this FBI tech whiz who tails Elizabeth Keen while she's undercover, helping her pull off her cover identity from a remote location. There are several parts where he has to intervene to save Liz's bacon, and once the final act kicks off, he gets a quick moment of patter dialogue - just a little conversational quip he says to himself - where he discloses his name: Amar.
There have been characters like Amar in the prior two episodes, but they're mostly a sea of disposable, blank faces who disappear to be replaced by an identical gaggle of FBI staffers in the next episode, but Amar is charismatic and fun. He has a distinct profile and a refreshing zest to him that contrasts with Ressler's sourpuss demeanor and Meera's ruthless CIA personality. There's no guarantee that Amar will be back in future episodes - again, there's a sea of disposable FBI staffers who could fill Amar's shoes from a utilitarian viewpoint. But for as minor as his role is in the middle of the episode, he fits in with the goofy spy hacker thriller vibe of the whole thing, and he brings a positive contrast to the existing FBI taskforce.
Aram is one of my favorite characters, and if he never appeared in another episode, he would have still put a smile on my face in this one. But here I am, singing his praises and calling him one of my favorite characters. So take that as a sign of things to come.

It's been a hot minute since I've done a recommendation post but I am suddenly in the mood for another one! This one for otome/amare games with fall vibes! Some of these are demos, most are complete! Also if you have any requests, feel free to send an ask.
Let's get started!

7'Scarlet
System: PS Vita, PC (steam), Switch edition coming in 2025
This game takes place over summer vacation, but it's also a horror which makes me want to place it here! It's also the only game on this list that isn't an indie title. Follow Ichiko as she ventures into a strange small town in search of her missing brother.
I'm going to be honest, my favorite part of this game is the art/design. The moving backgrounds are super pretty and all the color choices are really nice. Toa's also a sweetheart, and he made the whole game worth it. I know the PC port isn't great, but thankfully Aksys is bringing over the switch version in 2025 if you feel like waiting for that!
Titan Arum
System: PC (itch.io)
You're a writer whose moved back into your old childhood home. Attempt to finish your novel and not lose your mind.
Honestly, one of my favorite indie otomes I've played. I love the art, the atmosphere, and where the game pulls inspiration from. The UI design is also gorgeous and one of my favorites to date. The three LIs are all very fun and distinct from each other, and seeing how the story unfolds in each of their paths was fun to discovery.
Under Your Moon
System: PC (itch.io)
You're in a world where everyone has disappeared except for you. You've been alone for a long time now, until suddenly you're not alone. And this stranger might just hold the answer to why everyone in your world has all but vanished.
Is it cheating to do two games from (roughly) the same team? Maybe, but this and Titan Arum are so good and I feel like after Titan Arum, all their newer releases don't get talked about as much? The atmosphere and slow creeping dread this game has is incredible, and I was so invested in it.

X-note
System: PC (steam and itch.io)
My first otome I played and loved back in the olden days of 2011. I still come back to replay it and it still has a special place in my heart. A mystery otome about a psychic girl whose approached to help solve a series of murders. The atmosphere in this was great, and I love the main character Eri a lot as well as the love interests. It veers more into being sad then anything, and if you want that kind of vibe I highly recommend.
Halloween Otome
System: PC (itch.io)
And finally we got a light-hearted entry! You get invited to a masquerade challenge where you have to stay in your Halloween costume and not have your identity revealed for two weeks, all while completing various challenges.
This feels like an indie otome classic, and the whole series just feels like comfort food? I have a soft spot for it after all these years, and I've personally been meaning to replay myself soon!
Delphine's Discovery
System: PC (itch.io)
Delphine is a streamer who, in an attempt to save her family business, goes to investigate an old orphanage. There she meets a strange man and finds herself potentially stumbling upon a murder mystery instead. This was another game that just felt really nice and relaxing to play in the moment.
ITYH
System: PC (itch.io)
Camille wants Osgoode to notice her, and when he does, everything goes wrong.
This is where we get into more severe horror themes, and I don't recommend this for everyone. With that said, I loved how absolutely wild the plot got and where some of the endings went. It felt like a fever dream, especially on top of all the awful things that happen leading up to the endings. It's such a ride, and it's definitely one of those games I still think about from time to time.
Memory Ghosts
LOL gotta showcase my game somewhere-
System: PC (itch.io)
This follows Clara as she starts community college and joins a paranormal club on campus with her childhood best friend. The paranormal club as an interest in the old humanities building Mariposa del Sol, and whatever seems to be haunting the building seems to have an interest in her.
This was the first game I ever made and released and while I've definitely improved since its release, I have a soft spot for it! It only takes about 3 or 4 hours to play through every route, so if you want something to kill time, check it out!
