So how did you get the character files of the ol2 characters? I'm really bad with computer stuff and have no idea how to get them, lol. If you don't want to explain it that's ok, I just thought I'd ask!
You know what, sure. I can give a tutorial on that.
For those reading without context, anon here is asking where I got the sprite files needed for this tutorial. This is also essentially just a basic "how to decompile most Ren'py games" tutorial, just swap out all mentions of OL2 with any ren'py game of choice and it should work (within limits, there are some games where this won't work. But it works for both Our Life games)
This tutorial also requires a computer or laptop running Windows. There might be ways to decompile ren'py games from Mac but I'm not certain and that's not what this tutorial is going to focus on. Android users are just shit out of luck though, sorry.
Step 1: Open the folder containing the game's .exe file
This part differs depending on where you downloaded OL2 from.
If you downloaded OL2 from Steam: Right-click on OL2 in your Steam library, hover your mouse over the manage submenu and then clock "Browse Local Files"

If you downloaded OL2 from Itch.io: Find where you extracted the game to. If you're unsure, the folder name should look something like "OurLifeNF-[X.X.X]-pc" but with '[X.X.X]' substituted with the version number of your game (for example "OurLifeNF-1.3.5-pc"). Once you find it, double click on the folder to open it
Once you've done either of those things, you should have a window explorer window up that looks something like this

Step 2: Grabbing the archive.rpa file
This is the file that contains all the game's data
From the window you opened up from the last step, double click on the folder labelled 'game'. In that folder, there will be a file titled archive.rpa. Copy that file (don't cut it or drag it out of the game folder, the original file needs to stay in there or your game won't run)

Create a folder somewhere else on your computer, preferably somewhere like Documents, Downloads or Desktop where you can easily access it (to create a folder, right click inside whichever place on your computer you want to create a folder, then hover over the "new" submenu and then click folder). Then paste the archive.rpa file into that folder

Step 3: Download RPA Extract
RPA Extract by iwanPlays is the software we're using to decompile the files. Click the link above, click 'No thanks, just take me to the downloads' (or you can give the developer money if you have the means to and want to show them support) and then click 'Dowload' on the first option in the list and download it to the same folder you copied the archive.rpa file to

Step 4: Decompiling the game
Next, drag the archive.rpa file to rpaExtract.exe. You'll probably get this window that pops up.

Click "More Info" and then, at the bottom, click on the "Run Anyway" button that shows up
After that, a command window will show up with all the files being decompiled. Just wait until its down and then exit out of it.

Modded Balatro on Android is possible! (and not easy to do, but here's a tutorial to help you do it).
Part of the fun of PC gaming is being able to mod games, and devices that run Steam games can still use mods BUT android ports cannot. This is due to the fundamental differences between Windows, IOS, and Android.
So modded Balatro on Android was out of the question.
Or so it appeared.
Turns out early on people realized that Balatro uses an engine called Love which is very easy to dissemble and dissect. So before the official Mobile port came out, players were able to extra the Balatro files from Balatro, turn those files into a zip, and then run the game as a zip file through the Android app Love2d.
Eventually this process became automated and if you have an android device in developer mode you can allow the app on a PC to install Balatro and transfer to save files along with it.
Well, as it turns out, this process can also allow you to install a modded version of Balatro, but it's uh, not transparent how it exactly works or what can go wrong.
But I figured it out! And I can show you how.
NOTE:
I will not provide a copy of my modded Balatro. You need to buy Balatro and install it on Steam. Buy a cheap key before you try to outright steal. That's my opinion.
Yes, you will need a PC. The mod files run through Lovely Injector. Lovely Injector supplements the mod data into the Love Engine, so when Balatro runs, Lovely Injector dumps the Mod game data into the game's loading process.
Guess what doesn't exist on Android? Lovely Injector.
Now pathing could change that but god help you if you want to change where lovely Injector pulls mod data.
So you can change that information at will so that it can pull the mod information from the pathing that Android uses. I tried to figure that out but could not do it. But that is a thing you can do.
Now with that out of the way, let's talk about how I figured out how to add modded Balatro.
Okay, so the first step is to download the tools you need. You have balatro of course, so now you require Balatro Mobile Maker and a couple Batch scripts. Also 7-zip

NOW, if you want to edit the textures and music on Balatro follow these steps.
Step 1: Go on nexus or any other website that hosts Balatro mods and download texture and music focused mods.
Step 2: Open Balatro.exe (easily found by right-clicking Balatro from your library and selecting “browse local files”) using 7-zip and extract the resources' folder, you can extract the whole thing if you want to, but it's not necessary.
Step 3: Fire up your art program of choice (it has to have built in transparency, so NO MS Paint.) Open both the default sprites you want to change and the mod sprites you want to use in the change, and just start copying and pasting. Keep in mind that there is a 1x and a 2x of most sprites, but you only require the 1x of a given sprite because once you're done editing you can just can resize that image to the resolution of the 2x and nothing is out of place. Also. If you are editing hologram Joker, make the sprite translucent. I saw several artists screw that up. You just need to make the sprite translucent, and it will work like the original hologram Joker does.
Step 4: Take that edited Sprite sheet and re-open the Balatro.exe file as an archive again. Overwrite the default sprites with your edited ones in the archive and close it. Now, Balatro will run with those edited sprites as the default ones.
Music has the same steps, only difference is that you'll need to change the file type to .OGG and you'll want to rename the music file to whatever track you want to replace. (Note that editing music files this way will result in the soundtrack being slowed down for whatever reason. You can compensate for that by presumably speeding the track up in Audacity)
Step 5: You will power up Balatro Mobile Maker and run it. The program should fetch all the tools it needs to run correctly. It will ask permission for various actions several times, just say yes to the most logical choices, fps 30 can be left blank. You can run the executable wherever for the most part (at least for this process it doesn't matter) and it will find your legal copy of Balatro, unpack, format it into an APK compliant format, and then repack the file to be played as an APK. Now you have a version of Balatro that plays with modified textures and music files.
That's pretty good, but what if you want to enjoy all the fun and interesting modded jokers?
Well, first off, you'll need to temper your expectations. Some of the best Balatro mods also completely overhaul how Balatro works, and the Mobile Maker cannot cope with maintaining that functionality with Android. I provided a folder of all the mods I know won't break the game at boot. Whatever happens after that is out of my hands.
Step 1: Delete whatever mods you have already in your Mod folder (excluding Lovely and Steammodded). Go into the lovely folder and delete the files in the dump folder as well.
Step 2: Drop the mods I provided into the mod folder and run Balatro. Assuming you didn't have any issues with the game finding Lovely or Steammodded you should have booted into the main menu with the Mod tab accessible. Play a new game and do a couple hands. Don't worry about winning the round, just play a couple hands so that instance of your game is saved.
Step 3: Run Balatro Mobile Maker. Run it as normal, but when it gets to the part where it asks if you want to transfer save files, leave it alone and Run Balatrofoldersetup.bat. That will copy and move around a bunch of files needed for the Mod Transfer process. Once you clicked that Bat once, go ahead and tell the Mobile Maker to transfer your save file. When it's done, click on Balatrofoldercleanup.bat to turn things back to normal. If you forget to do that, Balatro on your PC won't run. Don't worry. If you forget to do that, clicking on it at anytime will still work as intended.
Step 4: This is the hardest step. Doing Step 1-4 over again because X thing happens.
If your pc is hooked up to your android device and mobile maker is supposed to be installing it on your Android device (and has the permissions to do so) but doesn't install it. Try again. If the App just plain crashes, move the app to a different folder and try again. I hear it works best in folders where the Balatro.exe file actually is, but I alternated between download folder, Balatro Mod folder, and the actual folder that contains the Balatro game files and there was no real difference.
If the save transfer finishes in a couple seconds, it didn't work. You can confirm it by opening the Balatro game and seeing that it's just default Balatro without the Mod tab. If the save transfer process takes several seconds to actually transfer the data, then it's actually legitimately working. If you boot up and see evidence of your previous game progress and the mod tab, you're in! Enjoy it friend!
Addendum:
Yes, I know that people have gotten Jen's Almanac, Pokermon, and especially Cryptid working on Android, I don't like using the Jen and Cryptid mods because they're just insane and exist for the spectacle.
The Vanilla Joker mods dilute the collection of Jokers making the really powerful cards less likely to show up and making really odd niche cards more likely to get in the way, this adds a bit of challenge. Jen and Cryptid having many face roll jokers eliminates that, however.
Also, a lot of overhaul mods require modifying the shader files to get the game working on Android, and I just don't know where to begin fixing that. I tried the patches and they didn't work.
If you know the solution to "error validating vertex shader code: Line 125 error '/': wrong operand types: no operation '' exists that takes a left-hand operand of type ' global highp float' and a right operand of type ' const int (or there is no acceptable conversion)"
Post it on this web zone, I'm not the only one wanting a solution for that, and no one on the Balatro Mobile Maker GitHub had a solution (that worked).
There are other mods I skipped that probably worked but didn't personally want in my pack, so go to Mirahaze and download whatever mod you like and go through the steps I tried. If you boot up the Android app, and it crashes, specifying that some abbreviated file linked to a specific mod was not found or had trouble installing, get rid of the mod. You could fix it, but if you could do that, you probably didn't need my help to begin with.

× In NieR Replicant it goes as reader being an orphan, while in NieR Automata goes by reader being a faulty/abandoned android
× Also, in Replicant reader lives in the same village where Nier lives since is there where the story develops
I love Devola and Popola, I think they are amazing characters with and amazing development and role in both games and yet the roles are quite diferent in both games!!!

Devola and Polola are the ones in charge of taking care of the village, so if they find an orphan on the village is only normal for them to take care of them, besides both are already taking care or Nier and Yonah (indirectly, since is Nier the one who is always finding ways to provide for him and his sister)
At first they started taking care of you along with Nier and Yonah because it was their work, but it didn't take long before it started to grow a feeling of platonic love for all of you, without noticing the relasionship all of you have became similar to what it is an actual family (although, neither, Devola or Popola, want to fully accept it since it could get in their job)
As well, it doesn't take much time before Nier and Yonah included you as part of their family, and since neither them have anyone else it becomes rather easily to get attached to you and see you as family for sympaty (besides, for them is just lovely to have you around, thanks to having you around Yonah doesn't feel so lonely and Nier is happy to have someone else to hang out with)
It doesn't matter if you are around Nier's age or Yonah's age, even if you were older than them Devola and Popola are always actively taking care of you and ensure your well-being
You are always welcome to spend time on the library and read all the books that they have there (Popola can teach you how to read and write if you don't know how, maybe you and Yonah can learn together, or maybe she wants to help you learn too), also you can stay in Popola's office if you want to but there would be some point where she ask you if you could let her alone whenever she has to discuss important work issues
As well, you are more than free to hang out around with Devola and heard her sing, you also can go to the tavern and heard them sing their duet too (just don't drinks any alcohol if you are still a minor, that goes for Nier too, or else you will get scolded), you can go around the village with Devola since she is the one who goes around the village more, it could be of help because that way you can meet everyone there in case you need help or even a job (like when they ask for Nier's help)
Nier is normally busy with work so are Devola and Popola who take care of Yonah, and they would be more than happy if you decide to join them, normally they keep company to Yonah, playing with her and reading her stories so you can join them with the playing or hearing the stories too, besides having you around could make things easier if they end up having work to do (since they are pretty busy too, but always apologize for leaving you two alone). Because of Yonah's sickness she can't go out for too long and has to stay in bed most of the time and you keeping her company in there makes her immensely happy, as well Nier would be forever grateful for making her company and never lose a chance to express how grateful and happy he is
If you decided to travel around with Nier is alright, Devola and Popola knows you are strong enough to protect yourself (even if not, they will make sure to guide you to learn how to fight, or at least enough to protect yourself since going out is dangerous for the shades being out of control), Nier will be pretty protective even if you are the same age, althought he makes sure to don't underestimate you
Devola and Popola start to change a little once you and Nier get to met Weiss since it is something that could put their job at risk but still you two are like their childs (as much as how they wanted to avoid getting involved emotionally they can't help it), they put more attention and stay a little wary about how much you two are going further in all of this, althought they can't help but worry for you two, even if you don't go around traveling around with Nier is undeniable that you end up involved and are worried for him and Yonah
Despite how things go or end up turning at the end of the tavel, Devola and Popola loves you quite a lot, all of you, and they just want the best for you so until the very end they will care for you (as much as it end up hurting), they just hope that at the end you understand why they are doing this

As long as they can remember it has always been the same, Devola and Popola only have each other in the entire world, it was them against the world, against the unstoppable feeling of guilt
One day, while wandering around the earth they came across another abandoned android, one that was half destroyed and vulnerable and yet, one that knew that it has a mision to fullfil, Popola was the one who wanted to offer you help in the first place, Devola was against it but at the end accepted since in that state you wouldn't be any kind of threaten
If they already know about the resistance camp they would lead you there since that camp existist thanks to others androids that were in your same position at some point, if not Popola will try to help you at the best of her habilities (Devola will do it hesitant and just because her sister asked her), however in that case is probably that they won't be able to do much due to lack of supplies
Both can easily sympathize with you by the fact that you were abandoned by YoRHa once you completed the purpose for which you were created despite still being funcional, and adding the guilty feeling that never let them alone Devola and Popola offer you to stay together until you find a safe place where to stay or something to do from now on
For being one of the firsts YoRHa units your capabilities were quite limited and for being injured just make it more difficult, so they started taking care of you, besides after a while they just grow fond of you and start to feel more like family for both (even Devola will open up more)
Once in the resistance camp you are free to go around all you want and meet all the other androids from there, neither of them tell you what to do or force you to stay together but they actually wish to stay close to you just as you were while traveling. Even if you decided to go around on your own but still came to them from time to time they will still take care of you in a more indirect way, specially by greeting you and asking you about your travel whenever you go out of the camp; in the other hand, if you choose to be closer to them Devola and Polola will be really happy for it (they try to don't be too obvious but they can't help it)
Since Devola and Popola offer their help to the injured androids not just to repair them but also to collect parts both are constantly traveling, so there are high chances that you'll travel with them while searching for the parts if that is what you want, however if you prefer to stay on the camp is completely alright for them, Popola always says goodbye by promising to come back soon without at fail, also they try to bring something specially for you (even if you travel with them normally, whenever you decide to stay on the camp they will try to bring something specially for you, aside from the story)
Both, Devola and Popola know too well that for being a YoRHa unit you are perfectly capable to fight and protect yourself, even despite being faulty or an old version you still are skilled, however they can't help but feel the need to protect you (specially Devola since she tent to be more fierce), most of the time they prefer to avoid confict, even with the machines, but whenever there is the need to fight both are quickly to get in a defensive state, indirectly shielding you
Once they get to meet 2B and 9S, Devola and Popola will understand if you don't want to talk much with them for being YoRHa units but will try to convince you to don't take it too personal or imediatly go against them (since, technically, YoRHa had throw you away to create those new units) since, at the end, all of them fight for the same purpose
Being able to help you does help them to calm that undying feeling of guilt and start making them feel a little more happy, before meeting you it used to be just the two of them sharing that feeling, but since you aren't involved in their past's sins is a new feeling of familiarity that let them have a rest of that guilt

So, I'm learning Flutter
One of my favourite hobbies (kinda) is to stake out the careers pages for companies I like the look of to see what kind of skills they're looking for and, well, Flutter Developer has popped up a few times by now, so here I am 😄
I'm enjoying it quite a lot 😳 It's still early days, and I need to come up with some decent project ideas, but it feels very comprehensive and there are some great resources and libraries available!
Coming off the back of the Java course I did last year, Dart feels very natural, plus I 💖 strong typing. I've been focusing on Android and Windows development (I do not have apple products to test on 💀), but I'm curious about Flutter's capabilities in making web apps as well.
Definitely a nice start to 2024, I'll be searching for placements soon, so, hopefully, my efforts pay off 😄

Random Markiplier ego headcanons: Relationships edition (platonic, familial, romantic!) 🩷
Bing, Derby (Cool Patrol Leader), and Marc (E-Boy) are all friends- they’re the shades boys and do dumb shit like make tiktoks of Bing trying to pull Derby on his skates while skateboarding down a street-
Derby and Bop (MarkiplierTV) are Yancy’s younger brothers. They all have the same dad but different moms, and are thick as thieves with each other. Part of Yancy’s incarceration was protecting his brothers from his mother. The younger two visit him on third Sundays 🥺
There is a possibility that Actor is Yancy’s father. There is also a possibility that Actor has attempted to treat Marc like his son despite their vast generational gap-
The Nightguard and the Survivor (FNaF Musical and Resident Enis musical) are brothers, who got separated when their lives went in different directions. They only meet again in the manor with their own sets of trauma and a quite bond over singing
Speaking of singing, there’s a Glee club type get together between all the egos who sing (Yancy, Derby, Bop, NG, and Res-), where they mostly just sing and Yancy tries getting them to do original songs he’s written (even if Bop is only vocalizing and not verbally speaking-)
Ed Edgar and Derek Derekson are work partners, who are attempting to fight for their businesses to get more advertising time on the Markiplier TV scheduling. They’re both awful fathers who convince each other they’re just Doing the right thing :/
Eric has been lowkey adopted by Captain Magnum, the two bonding over their prosthetics at first until Magnum offers to get the boy his sea legs, wanting to take Eric away from the loud bustling manor and onto the “calming” sea. Eric is just happy someone so big is being nice and caring to him 3:
Dr. Iplier and Dr. Plier (My Therapist, Dr. Plier) are cousins, who don’t know exactly why their last names are so similar but Different, but don’t really care. Edward (Iplier) and Greyson (Plier) have coffee together in the morning before their appointments and chat often, they have a solid relationship 🩷
Dark and Wilford are in an open marriage, Wilford enjoys flirting and being with many other egos while Dark is content as long as their husband returns at the end of the night to sleep with them.
Dark and Wilford have also unofficially adopted the King of the Squirrels as their youngest kid, as well as Ayano (Yandere) who was possibly the bastard child of William and Celine in their past life. All she knows is these adult egos feel safe to go to when she’s in trouble at school-
William and Michael (Actor) were brothers, Michael was adopted into the Barnum family and adored his older brother until their adult years, when the affair came to light. In the manor, Wilford has no idea why his spouse despises the depressed Actor that he just wishes to befriend!
Micheal had a short relationship after his divorce, with a writer named Arthur (Author) who wrote him violent poetry and made him feel adored. Now in the manor, Actor finds himself fondly listening to the Host when the man reads in the library ❤️
Google Blue is assigned the task of working with the Engineer to keep the man busy now that he doesn’t have a ship to take care of, leading to the Engineer to grow affectionate over the android as the “nicest” person in the manor (seeing how they barely leave the lab)
Murdock (A Murder With Markiplier) and Yancy are in a relationship that started as only physical and developed into more personal, both sharing their interests with each other the more they hung out. Murdock offers his couch in his apartment for Yancy when he gets on parol
The Googles do not see each other as siblings, more as separate parts of one being. They share files and memory space between each other, work on the same projects, simply having their own color coded folders for anything deemed unnecessary to share between each other. They all see Bing as a reluctant colleague while he sees them as his friends-
Edward has taken responsibility for HeeHoo, while it isn’t domesticated enough to stay in the manor full time, he leaves a cellar door open with a nest of fabrics for HeeHoo to curl up in during the cold months, as well as bowls of food and fresh water by the back door of the manor. Every few months he gets Illinois and Res to hunt it down so he can do a check up and give it necessary medical work.
Illinois and Res are adventuring buddies, in the sense they go on forest walks in near silence. Illinois talks the most while Res is just interested in getting out of that too clean and too fancy house for a few hours. Illy has the maps and the experience while Res has the weapons and skill to keep them safe.
Maybe I do a a part 2 for these adding in JSE egos or non-Mark characters from his projects?? I dunno- also I hit 30 whole tags for this post trying to name everyone and what they’re from 😭

Dev Log Feb 7 2025 - The Stack
Ahoy. This is JFrame of 16Naughts in the first of what I hope will turn out to be a weekly series of developer logs surrounding some of our activities here in the office. Not quite so focused on individual games most of the time, but more on some of the more interesting parts of development as a whole. Or really, just an excuse for me to geek out a little into the void. With introductions out of the way, the first public version of our game Crescent Roll (https://store.steampowered.com/app/3325680/Crescent_Roll juuuust as a quick plug) is due out here at the end of the month, and has a very interesting/unorthodox tech stack that might be of interest to certain devs wanting to cut down on their application install size. The game itself is actually written in Javascript - you know, the scripting language used by your web browser for the interactive stuff everywhere, including here. If you've been on Newgrounds or any other site, they might call games that use it "HTML5" games like they used to call "Flash" games (RIP in peace). Unfortunately, Javascript still has a bit of a sour reputation in most developer circles, and "web game" doesn't really instill much confidence in the gamer either. However, it's turning more and more into the de-facto standard for like, everything. And I do mean everything. 99% of applications on your phone are just websites wrapped in the system view (including, if you're currently using it, the Tumblr app), and it's bleeding more and more into the desktop and other device spaces. Both Android and iOS have calls available to utilize their native web browsers in applications. Windows and Mac support the same thing with WebView2 and WebKit respectively. Heck, even Xbox and Nintendo have a web framework available too (even goes back as far as Flash support for the Wii). So, if you're not using an existing game engine like we aren't and you want to go multi-platform, your choices are either A) Do it in something C/C++ -ish, or now B) Write it in JS. So great - JS runs everywhere. Except, it's not exactly a first-class citizen in any of these scenarios. Every platform has a different SDK for a different low-level language, and none of them have a one-click "bundle this website into an exe" option. So there is some additional work that needs to be done to get it into that nice little executable package.
Enter C#. Everyone calls it Microsoft Java, but their support for it has been absolutely spectacular that it has surpassed Java in pretty much every single possible way. And that includes the number and types of machines that it runs on. The DotNet Core initiative has Mac, Windows, and Linux covered (plus Xbox), Xamarin has Android, and the new stuff for Maui brought iOS into the fold. Write once, run everywhere. Very nice. Except those itty bitty little application lifetime quirks completely change how you do the initialization on each platform, and the system calls are different for getting the different web views set up, and Microsoft is pushing Maui so hard that actually finding the calls and libraries to do the stuff instead of using their own (very strange) UI toolkit is a jungle, but I mean, I only had to write our stream decompression stuff once and everything works with the same compilation options. So yeah - good enough. And fortunately, only getting better. Just recently, they added Web Views directly into Maui itself so we can now skip a lot of the bootstrapping we had to do (I'm not re-writing it until we have to, but you know- it's there for everyone else). So, there you have it. Crescent Roll is a Javascript HTML5 Web Game that uses the platform native Web View through C#. It's a super tiny 50-100MB (depending on the platform) from not having to bundle the JS engine with it, compiles in seconds, and is fast and lean when running and only getting faster and leaner as it benefits from any performance improvements made anywhere in any of those pipeline. And that's it for today's log. Once this thing is actually, you know, released, I can hopefully start doing some more recent forward-looking progress things rather than a kind of vague abstract retrospective ramblings. Maybe some shader stuff next week, who knows.
