The state of Utah in the United States has no citizenship requirements for marriage licenses, and Utah County is the only place there that allows international couples to register their marriages online. Since the county rolled out virtual weddings during the Covid-19 pandemic, it became a wedding haven for same-sex couples who are not able to officially marry in their own countries.

As sexual minorities in China face suppression at home, Utah County is allowing them to officially marry and celebrate their love — all for around $100. Although the marriages aren’t recognized in China, some 200 same-sex couples from mainland China and Hong Kong have gotten married via the county’s digital marriage license system since 2021.

For authorities in Utah County, the influx of international couples came as a surprise. The Utah County and Auditor’s Office moved its marriage licensing service online, as part of a digitization initiative in 2019. At the start of the pandemic, a number of couples requested Zoom ceremonies, and the county made those available as well.

The service first attracted couples in Utah, followed by people from across the U.S., and later, from all over the world. From May 1 to September 20 this year, at least 77 same-sex couples with mainland Chinese addresses have been married there, said county deputy clerk Russ Rampton, who oversees marriage licensing, to Rest of World.

Although same-sex marriage remains illegal in Hong Kong, under a different set of laws to mainland China, residents who get married in other places are able to apply for dependent visas in the city for their partners. Married gay people are also able to mark themselves as married in tax filings.

In his vow, however, [one marriage certificate applicant] Zhu said he was looking forward to getting married a second time — in China. “If one day our country allows this, I hope we could get married again in this country,” Zhu said to his husband before they kissed.

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is using an invasive, AI-powered monitoring tool to screen travelers, including U.S. citizens, refugees, and people seeking asylum, which can in some cases link their social media posts to their Social Security number and location data, according to an internal CBP document obtained by Motherboard.

Called Babel X, the system lets a user input a piece of information about a target—their name, email address, or telephone number—and receive a bevy of data in return, according to the document. Results can include their social media posts, linked IP address, employment history, and unique advertising identifiers associated with their mobile phone. The monitoring can apply to U.S. persons, including citizens and permanent residents, as well as refugees and asylum seekers, according to the document.

“Babel data will be used/captured/stored in support of CBP targeting, vetting, operations and analysis,” the document reads. Babel X will be used to “identify potential derogatory and confirmatory information” associated with travelers, persons of interest, and “persons seeking benefits.” The document then says results from Babel X will be stored in other CBP operated systems for 75 years.

"The U.S. government’s ever-expanding social media dragnet is certain to chill people from engaging in protected speech and association online. And CBP’s use of this social media surveillance technology is especially concerning in connection with existing rules requiring millions of visa applicants each year to register their social media handles with the government. As we’ve argued in a related lawsuit, the government simply has no legitimate interest in collecting and retaining such sensitive information on this immense scale,” Carrie DeCell, senior staff attorney at the Knight First Amendment Institute, told Motherboard in an email.

The full list of information that Babel X may provide to CBP analysts is a target’s name, date of birth, address, usernames, email address, phone number, social media content, images, IP address, Social Security number, driver’s license number, employment history, and location data based on geolocation tags in public posts.

organization the Electronic Frontier Foundation, told Motherboard in an online chat “the data isn’t limited to public posts made under someone’s real name on Facebook or Twitter.”

The document says CBP also has access to AdID information through an add-on called Locate X, which includes smartphone location data. AdID information is data such as a device’s unique advertising ID, which can act as an useful identifier for tracking a phone and, by extension, a person’s movements. Babel Street obtains location information from a long supply chain of data. Ordinary apps installed on peoples’ smartphones provide data to a company called Gravy Analytics, which repackages that location data and sells it to law enforcement agencies via its related company Venntel. But Babel Street also repackages Venntel’s data for its own Locate X product."

The PTA obtained by Motherboard says that Locate X is covered by a separate “commercial telemetry” PTA. CBP denied Motherboard’s FOIA request for a copy of this document, claiming it “would disclose techniques and/or procedures for law enforcement investigations or prosecutions”.

A former Babel Street employee previously told Motherboard how users of Locate X can draw a shape on a map known as a geofence, see all devices Babel Street has data on for that location, and then follow a specific device to see where else it has been.

Cyphers from the EFF added “most of the people whose location data is collected in this way likely have no idea it’s happening.”

CBP has been purchasing access to location data without a warrant, a practice that critics say violates the Fourth Amendment. Under a ruling from the Supreme Court, law enforcement agencies need court approval before accessing location data generated by a cell phone tower; those critics believe this applies to location data generated by smartphone apps too.

“Homeland Security needs to come clean to the American people about how it believes it can legally purchase and use U.S. location data without any kind of court order. Americans' privacy shouldn't depend on whether the government uses a court order or credit card,” Senator Ron Wyden told Motherboard in a statement. “DHS should stop violating Americans' rights, and Congress should pass my bipartisan legislation to prohibit the government's purchase of Americans' data." CBP has refused to tell Congress what legal authority it is following when using commercially bought smartphone location data to track Americans without a warrant.

Neither CBP or Babel Street responded to a request for comment. Motherboard visited the Babel X section of Babel Street’s website on Tuesday. On Wednesday before publication, that product page was replaced with a message that said “page not found.”

Do you or followers know of websites/organizations that post or gather archaeology/museum/heritage jobs around the world? I've tried doing some research but am unsure how to find I guess reliable and vetted sources, especially since I've never applied to jobs in other countries before (I'm Canadian if that makes any difference).

Hi there,

I'm mostly familiar with Shovel Bums, but that's pretty US centric. Like field schools, I get the sense that a lot of these jobs are also passed around by word of mouth, with people giving their recommendations and advice for who to steer clear of.

When you're searching, I would recommend looking for listings in a specific country rather than just searching for international jobs as a broad category. Also talk to the people who trained you to see if they have any contacts—whoever hires you will probably want to talk to them as references anyway.

While I haven't applied for any jobs like this, I would imagine there's also the added wrinkle of visas/language/travel that you may have to take on yourself. If you're going abroad, you'll have to compete with that country's native archaeologists, so be prepared for that.

I'll tag @archaeologistproblems as a Canadian professional who might have some advice? Anyone else is always welcome to chime in too.

A deadly stampede outside a passport office that took two lives and unending lines outside embassies - these are just some examples of what has been happening in Myanmar since the announcement of mandatory conscription into the military.

Myanmar's military government is facing increasingly effective opposition to its rule and has lost large areas of the country to armed resistance groups.

On 1 February 2021, the military seized power in a coup, jailing elected leaders and plunging much of the country into a bloody civil war that continues today.

Thousands have been killed and the UN estimates that around 2.6 million people been displaced.

Young Burmese, many of whom have played a leading role protesting and resisting the junta, are now told they will have to fight for the regime.

Many believe that this is a result of the setbacks suffered by the military in recent months, with anti-government groups uniting to defeat them in some key areas.

"It is nonsense to have to serve in the military at this time, because we are not fighting foreign invaders. We are fighting each other. If we serve in the military, we will be contributing to their atrocities," Robert, a 24-year-old activist, told the BBC.

Many of them are seeking to leave the country instead.

"I arrived at 03:30 [20:30 GMT] and there were already about 40 people queuing for the tokens to apply for their visa," recalled a teenage girl who was part of a massive crowd outside the Thai embassy in Yangon earlier in February. Within an hour, the crowd in front of the embassy expanded to more than 300 people, she claims.

"I was scared that if I waited any longer, the embassy would suspend the processing of visas amid the chaos," she told the BBC, adding that some people had to wait for three days before even getting a queue number.

In Mandalay, where the two deaths occurred outside the passport office, the BBC was told that there were also serious injuries - one person broke their leg after falling into a drain while another broke their teeth. Six others reported breathing difficulties.

Justine Chambers, a Myanmar researcher at the Danish Institute of International Studies, says mandatory conscription is a way of removing young civilians leading the revolution.

"We can analyse how the conscription law is a sign of the Myanmar military's weakness, but it is ultimately aimed at destroying lives... Some will manage to escape, but many will become human shields against their compatriots," she said.

Myanmar's conscription law was first introduced in 2010 but had not been enforced until on 10 February the junta said it would mandate at least two years of military service for all men aged 18 to 35 and women aged 18 to 27.

Maj-Gen Zaw Min Tun, the spokesperson for the military government, said in a statement that about a quarter of the country's 56 million population were eligible for military service under the law.

The regime later said it did not plan to include women in the conscript pool "at present" but did not specify what that meant.

The government spokesperson told BBC Burmese that call-ups would start after the Thingyan festival marking the Burmese New Year in mid-April, with an initial batch of 5,000 recruits.

The regime's announcement has dealt yet another blow to Myanmar's young people.

Many had their education disrupted by the coup, which came on top of school closures at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

In 2021, the junta suspended 145,000 teachers and university staff over their support for the opposition, according to the Myanmar Teachers' Federation, and some schools in opposition-held areas have been destroyed by the fighting or by air strikes.

Then there are those who have fled across borders seeking refuge, among them young people looking for jobs to support their families.

In response to the conscription law, some have said on social media that they would enter the monkhood or get married early to dodge military service.

The junta says permanent exemptions will be given to members of religious orders, married women, people with disabilities, those assessed to be unfit for military service and "those who are exempted by the conscription board". For everyone else, evading conscription is punishable by three to five years in prison and a fine.

But Robert doubts the regime will honour these exemptions. "The junta can arrest and abduct anyone they want. There is no rule of law and they do not have to be accountable to anyone," he said.

Wealthier families are considering moving their families abroad - Thailand and Singapore being popular options, but some are even looking as far afield as Iceland - with the hope that their children would get permanent residency or citizenship there by the time they are of conscription age.

Others have instead joined the resistance forces, said Aung Sett, from the All Burma Federation of Student Unions, which has a long history of fighting military rule.

"When I heard the news that I would have to serve in the military, I felt really disappointed and at the same time devastated for the people, especially for those who are young like me. Many young people have now registered themselves to fight against the junta," the 23-year-old told the BBC from exile.

Some observers say the enforcement of the law now reveals the junta's diminishing grip on the country.

Last October, the regime suffered its most serious setback since the coup. An alliance of ethnic insurgents overran dozens of military outposts along the border with India and China. It has also lost large areas of territory to insurgents along the Bangladesh and Indian borders.

According to the National Unity Government, which calls itself Myanmar's government in exile, more than 60% of Myanmar's territory is now under the control of resistance forces.

"By initiating forced conscription following a series of devastating and humiliating defeats to ethnic armed organisations, the military is publicly demonstrating just how desperate it has become," said Jason Tower, country director for the Burma programme at the United States' Institute of Peace.

Mr Tower expects the move to fail because of growing resentment against the junta.

"Many youth dodging conscription will have no choice but to escape into neighbouring countries, intensifying regional humanitarian and refugee crises. This could result in frustration growing in Thailand, India, China and Bangladesh, all of which could tilt away from what remains of their support for the junta," he said.

Even if the military does manage to increase troop numbers by force, this will do little to address collapsing morale in the ranks. It will also take months to train up the new troops, he said.

The junta had a long history of "forced recruitment" even before the law was enacted, said Ye Myo Hein, a global fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.

"So the law may merely serve as a facade for forcibly conscripting new recruits into the military. With a severe shortage of manpower, there is no time to wait for the lengthy and gradual process of recruiting new soldiers, prompting [officials] to exploit the law to swiftly coerce people into service," he said.

Even for those who will manage to escape, many will carry injuries and emotional pain for the rest of their lives.

"It has been really difficult for young people in Myanmar, both physically and mentally. We've lost our dreams, our hopes and our youth. It just can't be the same like before," said Aung Sett, the student leader.

"These three years have gone away like nothing. We've lost our friends and colleagues during the fight against the junta and many families have lost their loved ones. It has been a nightmare for this country. We are witnessing the atrocities committed by the junta on a daily basis. I just can't express it in words."

I only have an 18 percent chance of getting into a PhD program, according to the actual funding website. And I lose my health insurance on my birthday this month so I need to get a job or unemployment benefits. I have a linguistics degree and a translation degree, which I expect to graduate from with a 1st.

I applied as an in-house translator, freelance translator, subtitler (my actual specialisation), localisation tester, localisation editor, localisation specialist, linguist, post-editor (which doesn't pay), project manager (something I'm bad at but is urgently needed). I applied to the EU and WIPO. I applied for junior/entry level and expert jobs.

I then branched out to research assistant, science communication, copywriting, copyediting, international guest relation and tourism, airport jobs (where I'm not allowed to work because I'm too fat according to their application website), language tutoring and publishing.

Now I'm applying to be a secretary, call center agent, receptionist, bookie, croupier, cashier, video editor, data typist, case worker for immigration, and person standing outside trying to get people to sign human rights petitions. A lot of jobs I applied for require standing for long periods of time or heavy lifting which I can't do because of my joints but I'd have to accept anyway.

I have lost count of how many jobs I applied for this year but it was 40 just in the last two days alone. I applied for jobs all over the country, then in the entire EU, then in other countries I think I could potentially get a visa for. Jobs I'm qualified for, overqualified for, underqualified for.

I landed exactly 1 interview this year and it was unsuccessful. From the other companies I either got rejections or never heard back from at all.

Soviet and western leftist antizionism

Many on the left seem to think that antisemitism is solely a right-wing problem, but recent events have shown that it's a big problem on the left as well. This isn't new: there were many antisemitic campaigns in the Soviet Union, such as the "anti-cosmopolitan" purges, the execution of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee, the Slansky Trial, and the Doctors' Plot. Especially after their Arab allies lost the Six-Day War to Israel in 1967, the Soviets spread influential antisemitic and anti-Israel propaganda. Modern western leftists' antizionism draws many ideas directly from this antisemitic Soviet propaganda.

For instance, one idea that appears constantly in antisemitic ideologies is the idea that there's a conspiracy of Jews controlling the world. Most notably, it was the basis for the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. In Soviet anti-Zionist campaigns, Zionism was depicted as a threat to communism and liberation movements worldwide. In August 1967, the article "What is Zionism?" appeared in Soviet newspapers, warning of a well-funded "wide network of Zionist organizations" being "active behind the scenes of the international theater". In October 1967, the Komsomolskaia pravda newspaper claimed that Zionism was a "mighty empire of financiers" that controlled United States media and influenced many countries. Also in October, professor and Communist Party member Trofim Kichko described "international Zionist bankers" and their danger to "international workers' and liberation movements". More pamphlets portrayed Zionism and Israel as agents of American imperialism and capitalism. This exact same theme appears in western leftist rhetoric about Israel today. Just to provide some examples:

Something else Soviet propaganda did frequently was equating Zionism to Nazism. Soviet Weekly's 1977 article "Why We Condemn Zionism" called Israelis "worthy heirs to Hitler's National-Socialism". The Anti-Zionist Committee of the Soviet Republic (AKSO) claimed that Zionism was the equivalent of Nazism in its ideology. Several political cartoons compared Israel to Nazi Germany:

Some Soviet publications went so far as to accuse Zionists of collaborating with the Nazis. A 1985 TASS news broadcast announced that it was "the Zionists who assisted the Nazi butchers by helping them to make up the lists" of other Jews. AKSO released a brochure called Criminal Alliance of Nazism and Zionism, alleging that Zionists colluded with the Nazis against both other Jews and the communists. All of these ignore the fact that genocidal antisemitism was the core of Nazi ideology, by definition Zionists can't be Nazis. Even if one disagrees with actions taken by the state of Israel, nothing they've done is like what happened in the Holocaust. This antisemitic comparison appears in leftist antizionism all the time, from the term "Zionazi" to comparing Israelis to Nazis. There's too many examples to count, so here's just a few:

Anti-Zionism featured prominently in the Soviet Union's antisemitic campaigns, particularly the Slansky Trial and the Doctors' Plot, in which mostly Jewish officials and doctors were arrested and executed on spurious claims of being part of a Zionist plot. Tens of thousands of Jews applied for emigration visas to Israel, though many were denied. Yet through all of this, the Party insisted that antisemitism didn't exist in the Soviet Union - they were just anti-Zionist. The newspaper Agitator instructed its readers that their anti-Zionist activism would be accused of antisemitism, but that it was just a trick. AKSO itself was led by anti-Zionist Jews, a deliberate choice by the Soviets to avoid accusations of antisemitism. The decision to create AKSO was announced in the wake of a growing wave of international protests calling for the end of the USSR's restrictions on Jewish emigration. Soviet propaganda dismissed acts of antisemitism as "Zionist provocation" and said that Zionists were being antisemitic by suggesting that Jews were "an alien element in every state". Yuri Ivanov's 1969 book Caution: Zionism! claimed that antisemitism was "Zionism's sole stake in life" and that Zionists "regarded antisemitism as a boon", also saying that "one of the demagogic methods of defending Zionism against all attacks on Zionism as a whole is to qualify them as "antisemitic acts"". It also describes early Zionists as being opposed by the "overwhelming majority" of Jews. Propaganda insisted that the Soviets had no "Jewish question", but the moment restrictions on emigration were loosened hundreds of thousands of Jews left, mostly for Israel. Similar ideas of Jews provoking antisemitism, falsely accusing antizionists of antisemitism, and being the "real" antisemites are common among left-wing antisemites today, as is tokenizing anti-Zionist Jews (like JVP):

All of these ideas are antisemitic, and if you don't understand why, you should research the history of antisemitic tropes instead of insisting they're just anti-Zionist. Brazil’s Retaliatory Visa Rules Would Hurt Its International Tourism Recovery

Brazil understandably wants equal treatment for its citizens when it comes to visa policies, but right now doesn't seem like the best time.

Brazil’s plan is to reinstate tourist visa requirements for the the U.S., Japan, Australia and Canada will reduce tourism from those markets and make the country a less competitive destination. The reinstated visa application procedure details haven’t yet been announced.

Last month, the Brazilian government announced that citizens from the U.S., Japan, Australia and Canada need to have a tourist visa starting October 1. Since 2019, nationals from those countries had been allowed to stay in the country for up to 90 days with the possibility of extensions of up to 180 days. Before 2019, tourists had to apply for a visa prior to travel.

Tour operators have been surprised and confused about the new rule. “Every single person working in tourism is asking themselves at this moment, ‘Why put it in at this moment?’” said Intrepid Travel Brazil General Manager Fernando Rodriguez. “If we want to put in that visa requirement at a really bad moment, now would be the time.”

2023 seems to be starting off strong in Brazil’s post-pandemic tourism recovery. In the first two months, visits totalled 1.5 million for international tourists, according to Embratur, Brazil’s tourism board. In 2021, the country received 745,000 international visitors, far from its 6.4 million in 2019.

Visas will harm Brazi’s competitiveness in the region. Tourists typically make Brazil part of a Latin American multi-country itinerary. The visas will make tourists think twice about whether to include the country. “People don’t want to apply for visas for a trip most of the time,” said Rodriguez.

It all started in 2015. You were a teenage exchange student living in Rome, and you had a few classmates who were in a band. They were just beginning their careers, but you could tell that they were going to be better as time passed. 

Somehow, though, you managed to befriend them: Victoria, the bassist; Damiano, the lead singer; Thomas, the guitarist; and Ethan, the drummer. Together, they were known as Måneskin, a nod to Victoria’s half Danish heritage. You were among their first fans, and you were around their age. Even when it was time to return home, you kept in touch with them on social media through Instagram and WhatsApp. You learned Roman phrases with them over text while at the airport in your home country and you still supported them, albeit from a distance.

You found them all to be rather cute, but Thomas in particular caught your eye. With his awkward teenage boy appearance, his braces and the long blonde hair covering his face, your teenage brain found him irresistible. Almost every day, when there was time between both of your schoolwork and when the time difference would allow it, you would talk with Thomas through texting. Reading his texts made you giggle and blush, like every teenage girl getting a reply from their crush. Except that he was now becoming an Italian celebrity, thanks to the band’s appearance on the Italian version of X Factor.

A few years passed, you and your international musician friends all graduated school, and now you were all grown up and ready to head out into the world. Chatting and light drinking ensued, and you kept staring at Thomas to the point where he kept asking you what was wrong. Each time that he caught you looking, you turned away and mumbled that you were just staring off into space and not looking at him. But the truth was that you had fallen head over heels with him once again after seeing his face in person. He was definitely no longer the awkward boy you had a little crush on all those years ago, and he had grown into a rather attractive young man. 

The next day, you were glued to the tv set in your hotel room, at the edge of your seat. The winners were being announced, and you waited with baited breath while watching your friends embrace each other and be embraced by their former X Factor judge, a rapper known as Fedez. 

Måneskin won. They won Sanremo. They would go on to Eurovision now. 

You were ecstatic for your contest winning friends, and now you could watch them compete in the biggest international musical competition in the world. It seemed so crazy that these guys were once the kids you saw in school talent shows, performing mostly cover songs. Now they had a new album out, a rage filled hard rock album that you loved the absolute hell out of. And now they had won Sanremo. 

The 2021 Eurovision Song Contest came closer and closer, and with each day, you could feel the excitement between them, you, and what seemed like every person on Earth, especially after they won the contest. The excitement didn’t stop at the victory and the growing international fanbase however, a drug scandal emerged. Damiano had to pick up a broken glass that Thomas had dropped and it appeared to look as if he was snorting cocaine. 

The controversy died down after Damiano’s drug test came back negative of course. You knew that a drug test would come back negative anyway, nobody in the band did any drugs. With the exception of cigarettes and alcohol, if you consider those to be drugs. 

Flash forward once again to the present day, less than a few months after Eurovision. Your visa is about to expire, so you plan on bidding your friends farewell again tomorrow. Suddenly, your phone goes off. It’s Thomas blowing up your messages. He’s asking about learning English, interviews, and telling you about the planned tour. You answer his texts with short replies. You tell him that it’s because you're busy packing your belongings in a suitcase, but in reality, it's not just that. Paparazzi photos of him and his girlfriend out and about on a date were published the previous day, and when you saw them, that stinging bitter feeling of jealousy came back. You knew that Thomas didn’t know about your feelings and therefore wasn’t trying to hurt you. Nor was the woman he was dating.

India has stopped issuing visas to Canadian citizens amid an escalating row over the killing of a Sikh separatist on Canadian soil.

India said the temporary move was due to "security threats" disrupting work at its missions in Canada.

Tensions flared this week after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said India may have been behind the 18 June killing.

But Mr Trudeau said on Thursday he was not looking to provoke India with the allegation.

India has angrily rejected the allegation, calling it "absurd".

Speaking to reporters in New York, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Mr Trudeau said: "There is no question that India is a country of growing importance and a country we need to continue to work with."

He said Canada was not looking to provoke India or cause problems with the allegation but is unequivocal about the importance of the rule of law and protecting Canadians.

Relations between the countries - key trade and security partners, and US allies - have been strained for months. Analysts say they are now at an all-time low.

India's government swiftly made clear the suspension of visa services also "applies to Canadians in a third country".

"There have been threats made to our high commission [embassy] and consulates in Canada," a foreign affairs ministry spokesman in Delhi said. "This has disrupted their normal functioning. Accordingly [they] are temporarily unable to process visa applications."

He said: "India is looking for parity in rank and diplomatic strength between the diplomatic missions of the two countries. This is being sought because of Canadian diplomatic interference in our internal affairs."

Hours earlier Canada had announced it was reducing its personnel in India, saying some diplomats had received threats on social media.

"In light of the current environment where tensions have heightened, we are taking action to ensure the safety of our diplomats," a statement said.

Canada's visa services remain open in India.

He did not share further details, but said "the decision to share these allegations was not done lightly".

"It was done with the utmost seriousness," Mr Trudeau said, urging Indian officials to cooperate with the investigation into the killing.

A spokesperson for the Indian foreign ministry said Canada has not shared specific information with India on Nijjar's murder.

"We have conveyed this to the Canadian side, made it clear to them that we are willing to look at any specific information that is provided to us," said Arindam Bagchi on Thursday. "But so far we have not received any such specific information."
