how to math foods from their nutrition info and ingredient list:
in the US, ingredient lists have to be in order from largest to smallest amount. so like I'm looking at these chicken gyoza I get from Sprouts:

serving size: 7 gyoza, or 140g. This is slightly complicated by the fact that the ingredients list (below) is divided into filling and wrapper, but I'm mostly interested in mathing out the filling anyway. by looking up gyoza wrappers separately I have determined 7 wrappers is around 39-40g. (fodmap app says I'm good up to like. 30 wrappers. yay I don't have to worry about the wrappers.)
So I'm looking at a serving size of 100g for the filling.
the ingredient list looks like this:
Ingredients: Filling: Boneless Chicken, Cabbage, Sugar, Salt, Onion, Soybean Oil, Sesame Seed Oil, Ginger, Garlic, White Pepper. Wrapper: Unbleached And Enriched Wheat Flour (Niacin, Reduced Iron, Thiamine Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid), Water, Food Starch, Salt, Soybean Oil.
Because the ingredient list is by amount, I know that chicken (the first ingredient) could be almost all of that 100g, but the most cabbage (second ingredient) there could be is just under 50g, because there has to be more chicken than cabbage. and the same applies down the line. so the list is:
chicken - less than 100g
cabbage - less than 50g (half)
sugar - less than 33g (one third)
salt - less than 25g (one fourth) 1.6g (see below)
onion - less than 20g (one fifth) 1.6g
soybean oil - less than 17g (one sixth) 1.6g
sesame oil - less than 14g (one seventh)1.6g
ginger - less than 12.5g (one eighth) 1.6g
garlic - less than 11g (one ninth) 1.6g
white pepper - less than 10g (one tenth) 1.6g
and likely everything from sugar down is actually much lower -- you don't have your seasonings take up a third of your material. but those are the greatest amounts a serving could contain based on this nutritional label. and in fact, I can look up what the sodium content is--650mg, or less than a single gram, according to the nutrition label. sodium is about 40% of salt's mass so call that 1.6g salt, and then figure out that everything lower on the list than salt (4) has to also be less than 1.6g. (and. salt is also in the wrappers. so this is more salt and more subsequent seasonings than is in the fillings. 1.6g is our high safety estimate.)
so, what does my fodmap app say about these ingredients?
chicken's fine, don't need to worry about my meats pretty much.
cabbage: safe serve is 75g. I'm good.
sugar: safe serve is 50g. I'm good.
salt: does not contain fodmaps
onion: 12g is a yellow serve. but since we know onion actually has to be less than 1.6g, I think this is safe.
oils: no fodmaps
ginger: 5g is a safe serve, since we're under 1.6g we're good.
garlic: I had to look up a bunch of stuff to figure out what qualifies as a safe serve of garlic, because it's miniscule. but it's like 1.46g. that's close enough to 1.6g (and garlic is enough ingredients down from that salt) that I think this is probably safe.
white pepper: not sure, but black pepper would be fine?
Yay, I can eat a serving of these gyoza! my tendency to eat two servings for a meal might be pushing things but like. overall. safe food despite inclusion of fodmap ingredients due to how little of those ingredients are actually in there.
I do shit like this in my head like all the time. like when I'm trying to figure out how much lactose a cheese has, I'll check its sugar content. regular milk runs at about 4% lactose but I know 1-2% is generally safe for me to consume, so if the g of sugar in a cheese is less than 2% of the serving size I'll know it's okay for my level of lactose intolerance. (although there's a complication on sugar! if the amount of sugar in a serving is less than 5 calories - less than about a gram - the label does not have to report it! which is why tic tacs are listed at 0 calories and 0g of sugar even though their primary ingredient is sugar. because a serving size is less than half a gram. anyway this means that if i'm looking at a label that says 0g sugar and i want to be sure the percent of sugar (that is potentially lactose) is less than 2% of the serving, that serving size has to be at least 50g for me to be sure the "rounded down" to zero sugar is still at a safe amount. tricky with cream cheese where they set the serving at 30g.)
anyway shoutout to the gnocchi company (Del Cecco ftw) that put on the ingredient list that the first ingredient (mashed potatoes) comprised 80% of the gnocchi and the second ingredient (potato starch) comprised 15%, you made my life so much easier.

sunday, july 7 2024
breakdown of my day and what i ate + did + feel bad/good about
BREAKFAST: 141
mango - 6oz - 111 cal - for the fiber
peanuts - five grams (could be overestimating or underestimating, no clue) - 30 cal - for the fats
review: overall good! enjoyed this meal! ate the mango first for sweetness and the peanuts second for savoriness. yum!
LUNCH: 627
vegetable soup - 1 1/4 servings (probably not accurate [closer to .8 serving] but i like to overestimate) - 113 (see previous) - for fiber and so my parents could see me eating
milk - 2 cups - 244 - for the protein and, embarrassingly, the taste
annie's mac n cheese - 1 cup - 270 cals - i was hungry after volleyball, saw it and was weak. definitely will make an effort to not eat again because 270 cals for one cup is ridiculous + it definitely didn't make me happier
review: overall could do better. the mac n cheese was a mistake i will NOT be repeating. if i'm hungry i can have either something with better nutritional value or, even better, nothing at all.
DINNER: 303
vegan miso soup, mcdougalls - 1.9 servings (my calorie app listed one serving as 100 cals, which differed from the nutritional information on the packaging, which had one serving as 190, so i altered the serving amount i put down in the app) - 190 cals
tofu, firm - 2 oz - 48 cals - for protein and to have something fun in the soup
broccoli, raw - 1/4 cup (overestimated) - 15 cals - for fiber and yumminess
baby carrots - 4 carrots - 14 cals - for fiber, yumminess, and color in the soup
review: very yummy! good because my parents saw me eating it, and it was high in protein and fiber. i think if i make it again i will not snack as much (that fourth carrot unfortunately did not make it into the soup, and neither did a good 1/8 cup of the broccoli and 1/2 oz of tofu) and i might take out whichever vegetable has a better fiber to calories ratio.
SNACKS: 56 (embarrassed to have this section at all)
spearmint gum, wrigley's - 2 sticks - 20 cals - asked my mom to buy me gum at the store today, as i had run out of my sugar-free stuff. she did, which was very nice of her and i really appreciate, but got gum that has TEN CALORIES a stick. only found out when the second stick was in my mouth, and was too much of a f@t@$$ to spit it out. i plan on giving it away when i go to my volleyball camp tomorrow.
chocolate non pareils - 2 pieces - 36 cals - dessert for dinner. planned on having only one but was weak. overall not too mad because the second one really was nice, and didn't put me over my calorie max.
review: okay! way better than usual, where i substitute meals for snacks throughout the day, and end up eating more. this was good for me i think!
EXERCISE: 111 cals burned
volleyball open clinic - 2 hours, logged as 1 hour - 111 cals burned - i have my wl app set to somewhat active, so i figured i shouldn't log all of my activity, plus i switched out with a girl, so about 15 minutes of those two hours were spent standing on the sidelines and cheering. had a great time tho!
biking - approx 30 minutes - not logged - going to and from the store for my soup ingredients and dessert. not logged, because i'm counting it as my somewhat active daily activity and because it really didn't feel like anything.
SAD ABOUT:
that my gum is 10 calories a stick. and i ate two and would've eaten three if i hadn't noticed it. usually i don't count things like gum or tic tacs because they're below 5 cals and used to not eat more, but 10 cals is too much to ignore. alas.
my second chocolate non pareil. it was only 18~ calories more, but it made me lose confidence in my control.
PROUD ABOUT:
my middle sister made snickerdoodle cookies (my absolute favorite) and i didn't eat a single bite! came close... ripped off a little piece... but ultimately prevailed! woo!
got my middle sister, her friend, and my little sister bread from the store and didn't eat a single bite, not even a crumb. this is big for me because bread is one of the foods i'm EXTREMELY weak to.
went to volleyball when i could've just said no! one of my @n@ resolutions is to never say no to exercise, and i followed through. very happy about that.
CONCLUSION:
i will work on my self control and label checking! two failures of today that i really can improve on.
i am getting lowering my cal intake little by little. i have my max as 1200 cals (technically the healthy minimum but whatever i'm not doing that fr), but ate only 1090 cals today, and burned at least 111, which i'm glad about.
48.4 grams of protein today :). the app i use has a paywall for fiber so i don't know that total, but i think it was okay today!

- i know i'm not supposed to run, but after the day i had on Saturday i couldn't not exercise. i did feel awful after though. i got really dizzy and headachey. i also learned something. Tic Tacs say they have no calories, but i think that's only if you have a couple. i had like 30. i felt really weird, so i checked my blood sugar and it was on the high side. it came down fast after i stopped eating them, but lesson learned. So frustrated with my weight. it just sits at the same number. It doesn't seem to matter what i do. All i can do is keep trying, right?

vitamin C - my immune system is complete crap, so 20 calories and the orange flavor of bubbling water is a small price to pay to keep me from dying.
iodine - thanks to the female line of my family, in addition to the disgusting appearance and nature, also have hereditary problems with the thyroid gland. plus i live in an area of ​​the country where there is a lack of iodine in all products! double bingo.
vitamin E + retinol - prevents my nails from completely damage and makes my skin a little less crappy.

things ive noticed after one month of restricting again:
- i’ve lost 10 pounds
- i need around 800 calories to function normally
- if i’m not careful, i’ll eat 600+ calories of carbs in the evenings — when i’m not even HUNGRY
- i get dizzy and nauseated on days i DO eat a lot
- being social revolves around food and its weird and it sucks
- i’m cold ALL THE TIME
- e.d. movies are almost never good and theyre always white
- tic tacs curb boredom eating and sugar cravings a ton
- 1 rice cake, 1/2 tbsp sunbutter, and 1/4 tbsp polaner all fruit peach jelly = delicious and filling 99 cal meal
- it’s actually very easy to restrict when you eat clean
- paying attention to calories and taking control of reckless eating is actually so freeing

today i woke up around 11:30 am and i just wanted to get my life together. it wasn't very nice out but i went on a 4 mile run which burnt 409 calories. i wasn't very fast but i was still proud of myself for going. when i got home i did a 15 min inner thigh workout and a 10 min lower ab workout. these together burnt about 137 calories (rough estimate bc i cant afford a watch that tracks it).  i didn't eat until later because i began an 18 hour fast at 10:30 pm yesterday. overall today went well but i would like to eat less carbs and more veggies. i know eating this low of calories wont last long for me but i was proud. i just need to start waking up earlier and not binging as much late at night, its fucking embarassing.

1/7 TW : binging, restricting, Calories
I didn’t eat anything the entire day. My binge from that night was too disappointing and I was paranoid If I ate it would all turn to shit. I was okay for most of the day, (got a little lightheaded in dance) but besides that good. I even worked 6 hours and felt fine. The actual hunger cravings really aren’t that bad they get much more subtle after 12 hours I’d say and the main hunger pangs come much less frequently. I drank LOTS of water, chewed gum and a few kmints and tic tacs.  I had half a redbull around midnight and about 1/6 a bottle of gatorade later my rough estimate of calories is 120.
I worked out too, I did the 3-12-30 on the treadmill and 15 minutes on the exercise bike plus some pilates and abs. Burned roughly 375 calories and surprisingly didn’t get tired or lightheaded.  
Im proud of myself for not binging. I wish I could eat and not binge but any food is just too triggering rn.
