Neuralink has started human clinical trials for their Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) device called N1. The company just secured another $43 million in funding, bringing their total capital raised to more than $320 million. The PRIME Study (short for Precise Robotically Implanted Brain-Computer Interface) is for patients that have limited or no ability to use both hands due to cervical spinal cord injury or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Neuralink says it plans to perform 11 surgeries in 2024, 27 in 2025, 79 in 2026 and more than 22,000 by 2030. Once approved by the FDA, each implant surgery is expected to cost around $40,000 including exams, the device and labor. The company forecasts annual revenue as high as $100 million within five years (2028). In the short-term Neuralink is aiming to treat serious brain diseases, but the eventual goal is to provide human enhancement and achieve "symbiosis with artificial intelligence.” 😳

Alright, since @augmentedhuman posted some Bloodweave art, I'm upholding my end of the deal and posting some of my writing.

The context is that it's a loosely modern AU based on Duran Duran's Save a Prayer because it has SUCH VIBES. At some point I would like this to be a full fic, but for now, this is what I have written

In the evenings, Gale liked to sit by the window looking out over the street while he graded papers. It had the best view of the sun as it sank behind the towering silhouettes of the city, the sky fading from blue to pink to purple as the buildings threw shadows over the rooftops. Tara liked it when he sat there too, the gregarious calico settling in his lap to watch the birds that perched on the windowsill. 

Lately there was another reason why he liked sitting in that window. A tall, pale man wearing a leather jacket had taken to lingering by the corner. Sometimes other people came by to talk to him, exchanging a few words and flirtatious smiles before he led them off into the night. Sometimes, he'd pull out his phone and grimace, sliding his tongue over his teeth before stuffing his hands in his pockets and sulking off into the night. The rest of the time, he just kind of stood there smoking a cigarette and looking like he was waiting for something.

Normally, Gale didn't pay that much attention to the people who passed by his third story window, but one night he happened to spare a glance down at the street and found piercing red eyes looking back at him. He'd waved awkwardly, unsure he was even the focus of the man's gaze, and he thought he got a smile in return, but he couldn't be sure. Now Gale found the man's presence magnetic, his eye drawn towards the street with a distracting frequency, hoping against hope to catch the man's eye one more time.

Gale often wondered who he was and what he was doing standing there all night long. Though he knew he could always go down and strike up a conversation, part of him balked at the prospect. After all, what was he to say? 

"Hello, I live in the apartment across the street and I've noticed you around. You're so handsome and mysterious, would you like to get coffee with me sometime?"

Well, it probably wasn't the worst pick up line the man had ever heard and it wasn't as though Gale was without his charms. It just never seemed to be the right moment.

Astarion muttered to himself as he leaned back against the brick wall, hands stuffed into the pockets of his well worn skinny jeans. Petras had started edging in on his territory despite his repeated warnings. With the introduction of the Steel Watch, it was getting harder and harder to pick up victims for Cazador, and so the siblings were starting to bump into each other, causing rising tension and flaring tempers back at the coven. Astarion had started spending less and less time at home, braving sun as it began to sink beneath the city's horizon and the buildings began to cast long shadows over the streets.

Absent-mindedly, he glanced up at the window where the man with the cat liked to sit. He was usually wearing some flavor of robe that draped loosely over his shoulders and fell open at the chest, showing off just enough to make Astarion smirk. Every now and then, light from the sinking sun or a passing car would reflect off the lone earring dangling near the top of his jaw. It was that earring that had caught his eye in the first place, that little flash drawing his attention up from the street to the third story window.

If Astarion was being honest with himself, that man was the reason he was so protective of his territory. He didn't know anything about the man other than the fact that he had a cat, he spent his evenings drinking wine and reading, and that according to the apartment directory, his name was G. Dekarios. That was it. Sure, there were plenty of ways Astarion could find out more about him if he wanted, but the mystery was what made the man so enticing. He was like a beautiful bird tucked away in a cage that Astarion could admire while he worked and fantasize about when nights were slow.

What did he smell like, and how soft was his hair? What would he sound like if he was laid out on his back while Astarion pinned him down and sunk his teeth into his neck? Would he struggle? Would he acquiesce willingly, thrilled and aroused by the thought of being claimed by a vampire? So many of Astarion's victims were lured in by the subtle flash of fangs behind his lips, perhaps Mister Dekarios was just like the rest of them, sitting up there in his windowsill reading bawdy vampire romance novels.

Snorting to himself, Astarion tipped his head back and sighed, letting his thoughts wander further. The man in the windowsill seemed to enjoy Astarion's presence just as much if the long glances shot in his direction were any indication. How long would it take for the man to give into his curiosity and come down to speak with him? What would he wear when finally made his approach? Would he cross the street wearing one of his silky looking robes, one loose shoulder slipping down to expose a little extra skin? Or would he throw on something mundane and boring and ruin all sense of mystique that ignorance afforded him. 

Perhaps it was better not to know. That was the risk you took when you fantasized about strange men in windowsills; there was always the chance that the man of your dreams is actually capital D dull. Luckily, Astarion didn't really care one way or another. This was just a little game he played while he waited for his next mark to come along.
