Early this morning on January 3rd, over 60 activists from the Cymru Peace Coalition have shut down BAE Systems PLC Glascoed site, one of the UK's largest munitions factories.

To build public consent for increased spending on the military industrial base, politicians often lean on economic arguments. The Defence Secretary John Healey has suggested that jobs in the military industry produce greater economic benefits than in other sectors while outlining his intention to make the Ministry of Defence (MOD) an “economic department”. On the contrary, the military industry is not of inherent economic value, as asserted by Healey, but the beneficiary of an active industrial strategy that has been less available to civilian manufacturing sectors since the early 1980s. The UK’s leading military contractor BAE Systems, for instance, only paid 14 per cent of its £2 billion research and development (R&D) budget in 2022 with the rest of the bill covered on its behalf by government customers. As explored in detail below, the state subsidy and support provided to military companies operates to the benefit of the private investors that own them. Rather than a set of national or publicly-owned companies, the Ministry of Defence procures equipment from an “asset manager arsenal” — a landscape of multinational contractors, many of which are owned by the same few global investment firms. The level of public investment and resource afforded to military firms is politically pertinent in the context of climate crisis, in which the coordinated deployment of existing capital stocks, productive equipment and skilled labour towards the energy transition is of planetary importance. Given the state’s role in steering industrial capacity towards the military industry, there is an opportunity to repurpose production in the context of a wider economic transition, one that has long term benefits for the sector’s workers, communities and the national economy.

23rd January Spray-painting workshop

Today I went to the long awaited Spray painting workshop from 12-2pm inside the ventilated, heated indoor spray-painting studio with a six meter wall in the Yardworks building at SWG3. the Yardworks studio was launched in 2023 and is situated in the Galvanisers Yard, the large open space outside the main building.

Me and the other students attending the workshop git a basic introduction to spray-painting, the different cap types and what they do and many different beginner and professional techniques.

first we did some spray-painting circles and X&Os so me and the others who heaviest used spray-paint can learn the basics of it.

below is the area of the wall used. The red circles and other shapes were me learning how to spray-paint. it was painted over with wall paint and a roller as we came up with design ideas.

i had brough some of my drawings of ships in with me and desided on painting this most recent drawing.

first i Went to the far corner of the room planning to paint the ship as if it was coming put from the a joining wall.

I will make a separate post of all the best photos of the finished painting.

I Reflect back on this now and can say a few things

I didn't ask the Yardworks staff if there is any possibilities of me continuing with the electrical box project after my placement with them is over. I planed to ask but got so absorbed with the work

I was so focused on my spray-painting forgot to ask were everyone is at with their hours.

My art in particular will be a lot more difficult to paint over. see all the artwork around mine. the drawings I painted over were from other people learning how to use their spray-paint.

I accidently got some paint on the other wall that isn't meant to be painted.

Parents hold playgroup at arms company office in protest at Gaza genocide

“Dozens of parents and children staged a noisy playgroup at the London office of arms manufacturer BAE Systems on Friday to highlight its complicity in Israel’s killing of thousands of Palestinian children.

“Pushing prams and toting a parachute banner, Parents for Palestine flooded into the lobby of the glittering Blue Fin building, which houses BAE’s Digital Intelligence division. The group released 100 black balloons in memory of children killed in Gaza, called out BAE with chants and songs, and urged the building managers to evict ‘murderers’ who work alongside them. 

“‘Our government allows BAE to export arms knowing full well they’ll be used to perpetrate a genocide,’ said Rees Nicolas, one of the organisers, there with four-month-old Sylvia. ‘As parents, we couldn’t stand by and let this happen.’

“Outside, the group taped photos of murdered Palestinian children to the building’s pillars and played ‘sleeping bunnies’ with a five-metre parachute, painted with the words ‘BAE, stop arming Israel’.

“BAE Systems, Europe’s largest arms company, supplies the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) with key components of fighter jets, munitions, armoured vehicles and missile launching kits. Activists say BAE has made as much as £300m selling weapons components to Israel since 2016.

“Many of those parts are for the F-35, the Lockheed Martin-designed plane that is Israel’s most advanced fighter jet. The IDF is deploying F-35s in its airstrikes on Gaza, which have killed at least 14,500 people and devastated infrastructure in the Strip, and uses the jets to support invading troops.”
