I do think Blazing Saddles handled its one depiction of native americans very poorly, and the full extent of its representation of chinese workers on the railroad is they were literally just there. not even one single speaking line. unclear if this is worse or better than the redface.

it's fucking phenomenal at lampooning antiblack racism though. extremely blatant, extremely funny satire, which is constantly and loudly saying "racism is the philosophy of the terminally stupid at best and morally depraved at worst, and we should all be pointing and laughing at them 24/7"

plus the main character is a heroic black man who has to navigate a whole lot of bullshit but is constantly smirking at the extraordinarily stupid racists and inviting the audience into the joke. the one heroic white character is a guy who was suicidally depressed until he met the protagonist and they just instantly became buds, and he's firmly in a supporting role the whole time and happy to be there. the protagonist saves the day with the help of his black friends from the railroad, and uses the position of power he was given to uplift not only those friends, but all the railroad workers of other minorities too, in an explicit show of solidarity.

anyone saying "Blazing Saddles is racist" had better be talking about its treatment of non-black minorities. it had better not be such superficial takes as "oh but they say the n-word all the time" or "they have nazis and the kkk in there!" because goddamn if that's the full extent of your critique I very seriously suggest you read up on media analysis. there is too much going over your head, you need to learn to recognize satire.

#blazing saddles #finx watches tv #finx rambles #I recognize that I'm saying all this as someone who's not black #but I am also saying it as someone with a basic understanding of race relations in the usa #and a basic understanding of sarcasm #bc it really does not take more than that to recognize what they're doing in this movie #it is NOT subtle #and it is very funny #mel brooks movies are kinda hit or miss for me ngl #men in tights is great if a bit too crass for my taste #spaceballs has great jokes but the central story lacks any real heart so it doesn't grab me #history of the world was just kind of unpleasant and then I switched it off #but blazing saddles? phenomenal #I could not stop laughing the whole way through #and the central story DOES have heart bc it's the friendship between bart and #whassisname #jim #the Kid #plus bart working out how to succeed at an impossible task #also frankly cleavon little just grounds the comedy really well even before gene wilder shows up and we get their chemistry #bc he's cool calm collected and constantly inviting the audience into the joke #but the character's not too cool to ever mess up or ever be silly #he makes bad choices and gets into bad situations and then has to get himself out of them #but it's.....oh wait duh there's a term for this already #he's the straight man #he grounds all the zany nonsense by being in strong contrast to it #and he does a great job of it!#anyway #point is I deeply enjoyed this movie and I'm glad I finally watched it

#wanted to do a sort of inverse to small world's original vibe. i want to showcase just how little silver's world has been till now #silver didn't visit the castle. he didn't go to primary school. he lived in the middle of nowhere. i dont think he went out into BV much #so his entire world prior to NRC was roughly 8 people. only diasom and sebek's family. homeschooled KING it makes me emotional #NRC mustve been such a culture shock. so many people from so many places and so much new to experience!!! i love him!!!#i wanted to do like a companion piece of a flat plane and buildings from all over TW to show the rest of the world but not enough energy #these geometric buildings are ANNOYING theyre satisfying as finished sets but i am NOT drawing more of them #i send you all nothing but love. silver sweep. ive been very lucky to experience such kindness in my 2.5 yrs here i cant wait to draw more #rumbling like a car. id like to draw his lab vignette again. its my fav story. i want to draw a beyootiful tapestry-style piece. i . sighs #twst is so ripe for artistic experimentation ive never been so inspired by a piece of media. i want to draw everything for my boy #twst #twst silver #twstファンアート #silver vanrouge #suntails #also something w intentional complimentary colors. shocking ik but i dont think ive done one of those for twst itd be tasty #i have an idea for one w him containing his dream world a lil abstractly. forever obsessed with dynamics between vampires, specifically that of a maker and fledgling, as a way to explore abuse. the creation of a vampire itself can so easily be a literalization of the lasting impacts of trauma and also much more simply the ways a perpetrator might shape their victim’s very identity. the extremes of isolation in the way that the new vampire, in most narratives, must cut all ties to their mortal life, or else go through an elaborate charade to maintain the facade of humanity, while forever still being removed from it. and the sheer dependence and vulnerability of being in an entirely new state of being, wholly uncertain of what it entails, and relying on another person to define… everything.

#or just the moral dilemmas #rewatching amc interview is kind of making me insane #that moment in episode two when louis is looking for a sort of assurance in the fact that lestat may actually have some good in him #look at how he cares about music look at the simple wondrous things that can bring him joy #and then the immediate dread when the opera performance turns out to be imperfect because he knows how lestat will react to *that*#I think there’s also something really interesting in the highlighting of lestat upbraids the less skilled singer before killing him #(slowly)#but also I will wait to watch more before I articulate my thoughts #vampires #interview with the vampire #amc interview with the vampire #I do still find the lestat and claudia film and novel dynamic by far the most compelling for how she tries to usurp him but almost to be him #but I’m enjoying this #I’m very curious if I will like show claudia more on rewatch #the movie always resonated most with me (sue me lol) because there seemed to be more simultaneous fondness and attachment even at the end #dark stories of the north

listen. people have always debated which character is the most normal guy but what if it has in fact been crowley the whole time. no string pulling no master plan just a guy who wants to keep his school running and is cursed with problematic students and incidents

honestly I think the funniest possible reveal would be one of two options:

ONE: Crowley has no plot relevance whatsoever. he wears the mask to cover his receding hairline. his darkest secret is the bottle of "medicinal" whiskey under his desk. this man can barely plan a PTA function with six months' advance notice, he doesn't have the time or patience for any kind of overarching master plot involving mutating students or whatever. the only thing wrong with him is that he's been running this school for (mumblemumble) years and, quite frankly, if you'd been putting up with NRC students for a couple of centuries, you'd have totally checked out by this point too.

OR

TWO: Crowley IS actually Raverne and HAS been slowly enacting a master gambit...to embezzle school funds. the overblots are still completely incidental. he has somehow less idea of what's going on than we do. we confront him about it and he's just like
