#But the fact you were meant to meet him alive in the palace..
tatsrei · 1 year
Text
I remember seeing here on Tumblr a post about how originally the White Lady was supposed to be dead while the Pale King was still alive (the statues in the church where WL has a crack on the head and Dryya going mad over the loss of her queen).
I can't find the post anymore but I found a cool addition:
Tumblr media
Originally inside the White Palace you were meant to meet a "lone survivor" shuffling in the uppermost chambers. Who else could it be.
Actually I believe the final version fits better but, despite this text is very outdated, I find interesting that the PK is described as shuffling, because the more I look at his walk cycle the more I think he is dragging himself rather than slithering. The way his cloak moves is a bit of weird and I don't really know how to explain it, it does give the impression of a slither, but the general proportions make me wonder how the hell it would happen.
Whatever, I am not really sure. He just looks weird.

'Familial Matters' // Satoru Gojo x M!Husband!Reader
-------⋆❥°: ❀˚-------
-!! Hints of homophobia (meeting his family / clan) Just some fluff for my blue-eyed king <3
-------⋆❥°: ❀˚-------
Tumblr media
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Marrying 'The Strongest' certainly had its perks, but it definitley wasn't all easy-going, -- and his clan sure didn't make it easy.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------☄*. ⋆❥°: ❀˚ ♡˳--
Satoru loves you with his whole heart, his darling husband. You just recently married (congrats!), having been won over by the albino's boyish charms and, quick frankly, corny love confessions. Satoru had a very.... distinct way to show his affections for you. But, the man had a whimsical, childlike joy to himself that you couldn't find anywhere else, -- and you loved him for it. So, when he popped the question almost two years into dating, you were fairly quick to yell a resounding 'yes!'.
----☄*. ⋆❥°: ❀˚ ♡˳-- ------ --- ・:*:・゚☆
Satoru warned you from the get-go, from the very start of when you two dated, that his clan definitley knew how to make things... difficult for him. As pretty much the sole provider of the clan's prestige, it was easy to see why they'd be so reluctant to let him go. The old geezers had their nobly, boney fingers around him like a vice. And so when Gojo all of a sudden brings you around, a not-so-strong (but also not terrible- though that didn't really cut it obviously) sorcerer from a humble family, there was almost a fatality on site when they learned he had proposed to you. No way were the Gojos suppose to welcome in some uncultured peasant into their prestigious palace, allow their golden blue-eyed king to sully his reputation with you--, was he crazy?
But Satoru made it abundantly clear that his love for you was non-negotiable, so the old heads of the clan could go suck it. He wouldn't allow crap from anyone, especially not regarding you.
In fact, Satoru was reluctant to introduce you to his family at all, dreading what it could possibly mean for the two of you, and delayed any confrontation for as long as possible. But, alas, he'd have to grow a pair at some point, -- and with a tiny bit of a scolding from you, -- he put on his big boy pants and realized they needed him a lot more than he needed them. The Gojo clan was alive, definitely, but it essentially held no power in the world of jujutsu without the Six-Eyes, -- so his clan was just gonna have to put up with both of you, or neither of you. And, coming to the same conclusion as Satoru, they realized they really had no say in the matter. Satoru would defend you against his 'family' until his last dying breath
So they were left to simply shake their fists at the sky and damn whatever higher power that had given them such a lovesick heartthrob for the Six-Eyes, and reluctantly welcome you into their life of riches.
----☄*. ⋆❥°: ❀˚ ♡˳-- ------ --- ・:*:・゚☆
Your first meeting with them was at the traditional pre-wedding dinner, where both families from the union got together and got cozy for the future years of kinship.
It was tense, to put it lightly.
You didn't miss the disapproving gazes, especially the particularly nasty ones from the more elderly clansmen.
The fact that you were also a man didn't bode well for them. Same sex relationships were heavily frowned upon, and they no doubt worried about how this would affect the clan's reputation, for 'condoning' this kind of behavior. Satoru didn't give a damn, though. Who was gonna stop him-- no, scratch that, -- who could stop him? He was the strongest after all, the Honoured One, he could do whatever the hell he wanted, and if that meant literally bending the law to make a legal union between him and the man of his dreams, so be it. Satoru Gojo was above the law.
Some of his younger, more open clan members grew quite fond of you, actually. Who wouldn't? You were such a lovely person, afterall, -- your dazzling personality and just inherent charm won them over almost instantly. You eventually started to grow on some of the older members as well, -- maybe you were just born to charm all the Gojos. When Satoru needed to visit his clan, he'd often leave you with their company, and this was where you'd be filled in on all the clan's juicy drama and private life behind closed doors, - usually over a tea. You made sure to ally yourself with the gossipers of the clan.
----☄*. ⋆❥°: ❀˚ ♡˳-- ------ --- ・:*:・゚☆
Whenever Satoru had to take care of some family... "business", he'd always bring you along with him , -- both for his own sanity and to cure his crippling loneliness, -- he needed you there to soothe him everytime he got into another petulant fight with his family. He needed you there for emotional support, if he was gonna have to put up with entitled, whiney clan members for days on end he needed you to come back to.
He'd lay his head in your lap as you gently combed your fingers through his fine, white hair, sitting under the sakura blossoms in one of the Gojo Estate's many, many lush gardens. His already major head ache from his Six-Eyes magnified momentously by the clan's nagging. He keeps infinity on at all times in the estate, -- only lowering it around you. He'd rant on and on about whatever audacious demand the elders made from him, simultaneously reveling in the way you threaded your fingers through his hair, calming most of his frustration just by your soft touch. Often times you'd just gossip, shit talking was just so fun when it was about those pompous assholes.
----☄*. ⋆❥°: ❀˚ ♡˳-- ------ --- ・:*:・゚☆
Sometimes you could very much see crystal clear where some of the influence rubbed off on Satoru: that arrogance, the slight god-complex, even if it was played off as more of a bit. You usually wouldn't tell him that to his face though, knowing how it would trigger some insecurity within Satoru. He held a genuine disdain towards a majority of the clan's elitist and, sometimes, downright discriminatory rhetoric, desperately distancing himself from those kinds of messages, -- maybe not noticeably. You knew it would crush him, inflicting that kind of insecurity and self-doubt really wasn't your goal. Yet, you did remind him every so often when he took things maybe a wee bit too far, when he got just a little bit too big for his britches, you were the one to bring him back down.
What you didn't hold back on was teasing him about his baby pictures. It was almost comical, seeing how the playful, boyish Satoru you knew now started from such a serious, condescending toddler. It was kinda creepy, and you definitely got a kick from photos of him as a baby, alone in his crib in the middle of the night, eerie, freakishly blue eyes literally illuminating the otherwise dark room, like two bright blue flashlights were embedded into his sockets. It was always fun seeing how embarrassed and red he'd get, how quick his smug demeanor would shatter every time you'd manage to score another adorable baby photo on your phone, saving it as your lockscreen.
----☄*. ⋆❥°: ❀˚ ♡˳-- ------ --- ・:*:・゚☆
Bottom line: he loves you, like a lot a lot, -- and nothing that his old, pestering clan says could ever change that. he promised from day one he'd protect you from any and all danger, including that of his family. He won't take shit from them, and he especially won't take any insensitive comments about his lovely husband, either.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
[A/N]: Gonna make a part 2 but with stepfather!reader, -- if Satoru had a kid / heir prior, and now you've become a step-father to a mini-Satoru, -- only this one is much, much worse than the original, if that's even possible

cillian: what did you want to tell me?
~ Flashback ~
While it had never been confirmed to her, she had begun to suspect that, perhaps, that the resistance numbers were far fewer than she had once imagined. And if this suspicion was correct, Cillian Frost would be the key to everything.
If she exposed him, the rest of them would fall.
Ronan would stop at nothing to ensure that his brother was rescued and Percy, Kale and Finn would both follow his plans without a second thought -- and there would be nothing that the more levelheaded females of the group would be able to say to make them reconsider. It was clear that they were all bound together by something stronger than their shared believes. They were a family and that meant that they'd risk everything -- including the greater good -- for the good of each other.
The moment was nearing now: Cillian was to come to the palace today. She'd told him that her cousin and his sons would be away from the castle on a hunt and therefore it would be safe to assume his Lord Ormond persona and gather any information he could by speaking with the courtiers.
That had all been a lie.
In fact her cousins were all set to meet her here shortly for tea this afternoon. With Arthur and Edmund who knew him as Cillian the servant and Cassandra who knew him as Cillian the lord, he would be held here under charges of fraud and then she could come forward as Godfrey's informant.
Ciara had sent the guards in the hall on an errand, so Cillian could sneak into her family's quarters in the castle unnoticed. He stood there now, dressed as Lord Ormond. Aside from his windblown hair, he certainly looked the part.
Once, she had aided him in his disguise. His intentions to become Lord Cillian Ormond had been noble ones and, even now, she had to commend him for the selfless act of bravery that he had performed to save the life of another. She never would have condemned him for that. It had been one of a hundred small moments that had started to revise her own opinions of all of them. And Ciara realized, not for the first time, that there was a small part of her that begged her not to do this.
But the crimes of the resistance had been many -- that was just as apparent. She knew that her own family would never be safe as long as they posed a threat to them. Had it not been clear that they meant to leave none of them alive? If she did nothing, would she be responsible for the death of her beloved cousins? Her father? And could they truly blame her for doing whatever it took to ensure their lives, when surely they would do the same for their own?
Ciara had told Percy to make certain that Cillian came to her immediately, before he did anything else. "I'm sorry I'm late," Cillian explained, "Valentina was in one of her moods and I -- I don't like to take the main road from Malconaire." The impatience in his voice was apparent. He wanted to make the most of the time he had left, "What is it you wanted to tell me?"
AI don't like to take the main road from Malconaire.
Ciara remembered the first time she'd seen it: the Pyre Walk was horrific even in the weeks following the burnings -- the half decayed; half scorched bodies that still remained hanging left behind as a warning. She hadn't known what had happened there, when they'd initially ridden past it, and had been told by one of her attendants that it was surely part of some barbaric Astairan tradition: they worshiped demons here, after all.
It wasn't until later that she had heard the truth of it: how her cousin had rounded up anyone who had ever been suspected to be a witch and had them burned. None of them had had a trial; none of them had had any real proof laid against them and all of them had died.
Cillian was looking at her, expectedly. Ciara still had not given him an answer. "Are you alright?"
She had been so close to exposing him, but it was those memories that changed her mind. Whatever happened -- whoever became ruler of Astaira next -- it was suddenly very clear to her that it could not remain in the hands of Roderick. Whatever the consequences of her actions, she did not want to see the horrors of the Pyre Walk repeated.
So Cillian must live to see another day.
"I -- I don't think you should do this, Cillian. It's too dangerous today. I'm sorry, but -- you must leave. Now." How long did they have? Since he had arrived late, she suspected that they had mere moments to spare. "Here -- " She practically shoved him through the door, "down through the servant's entrance. No should see you."
Before Cillian could protest, there was a knock at the door.
Cillian didn't move.
"Cillian, you can't be here -- "
"I don't think I've ever told you before but ... thank you. For everything."
"This is hardly the time -- "
"I know but ... this can't be easy. So, thank you. From all of us."
Cillian had never said anything like that to her, before. She could tell that he had never truly trusted her -- even if her assistance with his Lord Ormond disguise had softened him, somewhat. For a moment, she wondered if he had somehow known that she had changed her mind: that she had just then decided to save him.
Another knock upon the door, "Cillian if you don't leave now, I -- "
"Where's the fun if we don't press our luck a little?" But he held up his hands in defeat as he said it and stepped back into the passage. Ciara slammed the door behind him, just as the door opened and her royal cousins were announced.

I looked it up out of curiosity and yes henry’s fairy tale is written in an email literally right before the lake house. also it ends with “the peasant boy made him feel alive for the first time in years” (whereas the movie says for the first time in his life 🥺). the movie adds on “the peasant boy pulled at the last piece of armor but the prince held it firmly in place” and then the line about how there’s now a space between the prince’s armour and his heart. So notion that Henry is in love with Alex is a lot more present in the movie scene than the book.
lmfao, same hat. maybe i misunderstood your question. i thought you were implying that the movie changed the fact that henry loved alex all along? unless this is a different anon lol sorry i can't tell rn.
i think it's a bit clearer in the book that henry has always loved alex, maybe because he actually says it a few times and all that but either way i think it's evident that henry is in love with alex by the lake house.
and lemme just say, both nick and taylor pass for being 20ish (since the movie aged them up a few years) so i think having an actual flashback to them meeting would've really been great.
i do fully understand why matthew cut that dialogue (and i think the dialogue we see in the montage during alex's speech is not the same one we saw in the extended scene, unless it's just a different take.) cause it makes henry seem pretty cruel for what he did to alex after alex already asked if he still meant what he said their first night together. we as fans of the book and movie understand what happened ofc because we're deeply invested, but he had to adapt it for people who are going to watch it casually and people who don't even read books at all, so i get it.
i think that would've worked really well after storming the palace and before they're outed though.
i mean henry does say he loves alex at the palace a few times, but i still do kinda feel like we needed more of a bridge after texas and it would've worked so well there!

It was rather late and empty, you wondered why the university authorities were still here. Maybe they were called? You had no idea but you didn’t want to overthink it. You just had to go there, answer all the questions and make the situation straight.
On the way up you asked Kanao what she meant. You learned from her that relationships or affairs between the students and staff members were not so uncommon. There were in fact regulations about what to do in such a situation. Right now the thing that you could be blamed for was keeping it a secret and getting busted. You felt slightly more confident.
Soon you all stumbled upon Sanemi who was standing alone in the dimly lit corridor. He was waiting in front of the head’s office.
Your friends hid a bit behind you upon seeing him. The white haired gave you a questioning look.
‘’No time to explain, don’t eat them alive.’’ You answered his silent question to which he only sighed.
‘’You know what you’re doing?’’ Sanemi asked, looking down on you.
‘’So you didn’t talk to them?’’
‘’You asked me not to.’’
‘’Oh.’’ Your eyes widened slightly. ‘’I thought… never mind, thank you.’’
Not knowing whether to hug him, pat him, hit him or what to do you just turned around to face the door. Taking a deep breath, you knocked and walked in.
It was a vast, quiet room. An ‘U’ shaped table cornered one chair, standing alone in the centre like a lonely soldier. Shelves filled with papers stacked abound the walls making the palace look very formal. A bunch of people sat around the table looking at you in various ways. Right now you regret your confidence. You thought it would be a talk with one person, came out you had to confess in front of an audience.
‘’Good evening miss…’’ The man sitting in the very centre started.
He had a nice, brown, casual suit and black, shoulder length hair. The thing that you spotted very fast was some kind of a rash on his forehead but you didn’t have the guts to even stare.
‘’Y/N L/N.’’
‘’So nice to meet you.’’ His voice was soothing. ‘’I believe we meet here in rather unpleasant circumstances but please remember, you don’t have to be scared. Just tell us the truth.’’ He looked straight at you and you nodded slightly. ‘’Please sit down.’’
Doing as he asked you took the place in the middle, everyone scrutinising you. One tall and big guy who barely fit in his suit and chair literally started to cry.
‘’My name is Kagaya Ubuyashiki, I am one of the authorities at our university and I am going to ask you a few questions. I would like you to answer the best you can. Please don’t feel ashamed of anything, we are only here to discuss.’’ You nodded to everything he said. ‘’Let’s start then. Miss Y/N did you ever hold any sexual intercourses with Shinazugawa Sanemi, the staff member at our university?’’
You nearly choked. You knew damn well what they’d ask for but you could never be ready for something like this. In a quiet voice you answered.
‘’Yes.’’
‘’Were there multiple sexual intercourses between you Miss and Mister Shinazugawa or did it happen only once?’’
‘’Multiple.’’
‘’When did the first sexual intercours occur?’’
‘’New Year’s Eve.’’
‘’Was is consensual on both sides?’’
‘’Yes.’’
‘’Were there any conditions on which you Miss and Mister Shinazugawa perform the sexual intercourse?’’
‘’No.’’
‘’What was the cause of it?’’
‘’I- I…’’ You started to stumble, your tongue tangled in a knot.
‘’You may rethink your answer, we have a lot of time, please don’t stress.’’
You took a deep breath and answered the best you could.
‘’I believe it was simple human attraction.’’
‘’So there were no inside agreements that could be the purpose of the sexual intercours.’’
‘’No.’’
The questions didn’t end. They asked about everything, what occasion led to this. About the process, about the project that the two of you worked on, have you been seeing each other, how often do you spend time together. After a long time you had the feeling they knew everything, squeezing every last bit of your soul from inside of you.
‘’Are you and Mister Shinazugawa in a relationship?’’ The question threw you off track.
‘’No. We never discussed anything like this. The whole situation was too complicated.’’
‘’I believe it must have been.’’ Ubuyashiki nodded his head in an understanding manner. ‘’If you could, would you be interested in a romantic relationship with Mister Shinazugawa?’’
This time you looked him in the eye completely lost. The warm smile never left his face.
‘’Yes.’’
You felt like you were giving them your heart away. So many things that you couldn’t sleep over were finally voiced out. You wanted to be with him, if you could, you would want to.
‘’Thank you very much for your cooperation. I would now like to speak with Mister Shinazugawa himself but I must ask you to stay near the office. I believe we will hold yet another discussion shortly.’’
Like a lunatic you exited the room. Stepping to the side you gestured for Sanemi to walk in. The paleness of your face made him blank like a sheet of paper. When he disappeared inside the door you slid down the wall.
‘’And what? What did they say?’’ Aoi jumped right in front of you.
‘’Nothing, they just asked questions.’’
-
Your friends tried to lighten your mood but they also felt the pressure of the situation. You all sat on a row of seats, observing the office but far enough not to make any noise. None of you talked much.
After what felt like eternity Sanemi came out, his face a mystery for you. Spotting you he made his way.
‘’Move.’’ He spat at Zenitsu who was sitting to your right.
The blonde jumped away like from fire.
‘’Don’t be mean.’’ You pleaded, already having enough of everything.
The white haired man sat next to you. He also had no clue whether to hug you or not. He wanted to make you feel better but it was he himself who brought all this upon you. Luckily you were smarter or maybe just more fed up. Your head hit his chest as a deep sigh exited your sore from the crying throat. He put his hand around you, looking up at the ceiling.
The rest sat in absolute silence not expecting such an act of kindness from the two of you. Only now did it hit Aoi that it was not just a simple affair, the two of you must feel something and it was all on aim now.
‘’I thought we were smart, really.’’ You started, the stress burning you out enough to make the whole situation feel unreal, like it’s just a joke and you’re not really sitting here. ‘’All this physics and mathematics made me think I’m smart, and that you’re smart but if fact we’re just both so fucking stupid.’’
‘’Mhm.’’ He answered blankly. ‘’I always knew you’re stupid.’’
‘’Same for you.’’
A quiet ‘pft’ left your lips.
‘’How can you laugh right now? I’m dead stressed and it’s not even about me.’’ Aoi stared in awe.
Sanemi shot her a mean glare. They got delusional, thinking they can act the same as you around him. Guess he was nice just for you.
‘’And what am I supposed to do?’’ You answered, tapping your foot on the floor.
Silence fell on you once more.
-
After some more time a bunch of people spilled out of the office. All of them were present during the hearing, some of them even shot you a glance but Sanemi didn’t even think about letting you go.
A different woman asked you to come back into the office. This time it was only Ubuyashiki who motioned you to sit on the same chair but closer to him.
‘’I am very grateful for your cooperation.’’ He started, the smile still present on his face. ‘’I could not speak freely while my colleagues were present but now I can explain to you how this situation looks like from a slightly different side.’’ You nodded, not sure what to expect.
‘’I have known Sanemi for a long time now. I helped him climb the career ladder till the point he is now. Not only him, there are many lecturers who had a… hard past and needed a chance. Due to knowing him for so long and because of all the circumstances of him being under my care I observe him, and all the others, on a day to day basis. I suspected this affair, seeing how close the two of you were. I have read through your files, I know your situation at the university. I was afraid that your recklessness in this field may lead to some very serious problems and I was not wrong. However, I am not, personally, reluctant to this. Moreover, I fully support this relationship. My personal beliefs and an important testimony from a third party helped me with convicting the council. Some of them opposed at first but the third party was very eager to prove their point. We all had time to think about it and discuss it coming to a simple decision.’’ You hardly believed what you heard but there was no time to analyse his words, you were too hung up on what he was about to say in a second.

i finished watching the golden girls tonight and let me tell you... that is not a show to finish watching when you're in the heartache of a friend break-up lmao.
it was good though. i started it in january 2022 because it had been on my radar for a while and in the wake of betty white's passing, it felt like a fitting time to finally start it. i watched the first 5 seasons quite quickly but slowed waaaaaay down with the last two. i can see why it was so loved. i almost wish i'd kept note of the plot-holes to make a post about them though because i noticed soooooo many.
i think rose and dorothy were my favourites. rose was so sweet. i'm clearly too fucking soft to be alive because sometimes when the other girls made jokes at rose's expense, it made me feel like crying lmao.
i was surprised the series ended without saying anything about she and miles' wedding because they were engaged just a few episodes before the finale? i guess that might be because of the sequel show but i was shocked it ended with a wedding that wasn't rose's. i'm glad she was choosing to stay living with blanche and sophia instead of moving in with her daughter though, but it did sort of make me wonder because if she's getting married won't she be perhaps moving in with miles sometime in the near future???
i was happy for dorothy though. the whole series she had such back-and-forth with stan and the other girls joking about her single life so i think she deserved a nice husband!!! the fact it was someone related to one of her best friends was a nice twist (although it did make me wonder how old he is if he's blanche's uncle).
blanche's story concluded the way she'd always been and she's fairly happy with her life so... no complaints there??? i think it would've been fun if sophia had a lil boyfriend though. but i still have to watch the golden palace so i guess we'll see. i'm just glad none of them will be lonely/without each other. the scene of them all crying and hugging goodbye had me so sad though. like pls! you can all visit each other! </3
throughout the series though i had a crazy hard time keeping up with their families. it seemed like they all had absolutely hundreds of siblings and children. rose had like... nine (???) adoptive siblings. and she mentions five children but we only ever meet two of her daughters, kiersten and bridget, and we know of two granddaughters, both kiersten's.
and then blanche is one of five children and i think we meet all of her siblings bar her brother tad in this series. and i was constantly confused by her kids, every time she mentioned one of them it seemed like there was a new drama!!! probably because she was a distant mother who relied on nannies because she had five kids she seemingly wasn't super interested in mothering, but anyway. i know we meet janet and rebecca whom she repairs her relationships with, and then we don't meet matthew "skippy", or doug, or biff. and we know her late husband had a son borne of an affair, david. i like to think blanche keeps in touch with david and maybe introduces him to his half-siblings so they can all have a relationship. it bugged me that he was called david though because, common as the name may be, they could've just made it something different since one of janet's three children is called david and we meet him during the series too.
dorothy was less confusing because she only had one sister and one brother (i was so sad for her and sophia when he died??!) and only had two kids, michael and kate. so as a result, sophia, also less confusing, because she's got three kids with one of them obviously being a main character.
anyway. i find it deeply interesting how the perception of middle-aged women has changed in the decades since this show aired. i always thought these women were meant to be much older than they were (with the exception of sophia, since she's aged 80 in the pilot). like definitely late 60s at the very least (which still isn't really that old now). but they're all early to mid 50s when the show begins. they are by no means 'old' ladies in my eyes. whereas you look at shows nowadays that portray women in their 50s, you generally wouldn't assume they're 50. it's just interesting how the style has changed but also the lens through which we view aging women.
anyway, it was a great show. i'd like to watch the sequel. i feel like it tied up the main plots nicely enough and it made me laugh out loud genuinely several times. it was far more progressive than i expected it to be considering the era and seeing these beautiful women being trailblazers for 'older' women, and for these minority groups and prevalent issues they discussed on the show was a joy.
it feels strange to think they are all now passed, but they've given people such comfort even long after their deaths. <3

“You will not believe what-” y/n had the habit of not knocking before entering his room. The general had been more than annoyed with her initially, but she insisted that it was a way for him to distinguish her from everyone else.
Hear the door open? You don’t have to guess who it is, you’ll know it’s me, she used to tell him.
Now, however, she was wishing she didn’t have that habit in the first place. Stumbling into a room, your partner’s room, to find him standing way too close to another girl, wasn’t on her list for tonight. Maybe a warning would have been nice but at the same time, if she had knocked she wouldn’t have found them this way.
Her initial enthusiasm at the prospect of sharing this gossip with him had suddenly vanished. The smile on her face turned into a frown as Alina cleared her voice and took a step away from the general for decency’s sakes. Too late, y/n wanted to tell her.
It was painfully clear what she had interrupted. She willed her face to set into an emotionless expression but she couldn’t help a glance in Aleksander direction. Arms behind him, he looked nothing but proper and collected. But y/n knew him, probably better than anyone else in this world, and had learnt how to read his body. His jaw was clenched which meant that he wasn’t as calm as he wanted to appear.
Good, y/n thought, let him drown in guilt and misery.
Clearing her voice, she realized she had been standing there without saying anything for too long.
“I’m so sorry, General, I didn’t know you were busy. I should have knocked,” she excused herself without looking at them. “I’ll leave you to it.” With a slight nod, she added before hightailing out of the room.
She could feel Alina’s questioning gaze on her back as she closed the door behind her. There were already rumours going around about her supposed relationship with the General. No one knew for certain, neither y/n nor Kirigan had ever bothered confirming or denying them. Now though, she knew that words of this little encounter would spread, further cementing the already existing gossip.
Oh well, she thought as she walked to her room, by the looks of it there wasn’t going to be a relationship to gossip about anymore.
Her bedroom had lost every sense of familiarity and comfort a private space like this should have. She hardly ever slept in it anymore. Not since she and the general had become a thing. She only went there to change and so slipping into the bed felt weird and anonymous. As if she was in someone else’s bed and not hers.
Her sleep was doomed to be restless, she knew. However, tomorrow’s busy schedule prompted her to at least try and get some sleep. Even if it only was a couple of hours. Shuffling to change position she tried to keep Aleksander out of her mind.
An unachievable task, she was aware but she tried nonetheless. Things between them had been tense ever since he had come back to the Little Palace with her. y/n knew of his plans. She knew why he needed to do certain things and how Alina was involved. That didn’t mean she was fine with it though.
Not only did it bother her the fact that he was stripping the girl of her will and powers eventually but it also bothered her that he had chosen to get to her by manipulating her feelings. They had had countless fights because of this but nothing ever came out of it. A centuries-long existence meant that he was stubborn beyond belief and there was no way of making him change his mind once it was set on something.
After what she had witnessed today though, y/n wondered if the jokes were on him and he did end up feeling something genuine for Alina. Y/n herself had met her and spoke with her a couple of times and she had to admit begrudgingly that she wasn’t that bad.
Lost in her thoughts, y/n was snapped out of it by a loud knock at her door. As soon as she started to wonder who could be bothering her at this hour, the door opened and she stopped guessing.
Of course, it was him.
“I’m in no mood to talk to you, Aleksander. Please go.” She spoke, not bothering to turn towards where she knew he was standing. Y/n knew that while she couldn’t see him in the dark this wasn’t true for him. Shadows didn’t hinder his view like they did everyone else, they were an extension of him.
He didn’t speak but she also didn’t hear him walking away. She let out a sigh and that was the only way she was willing to acknowledge him. He wanted to stand in the shadow and stare like a creep? Fine, two could play this game.
Set on ignoring him, she stubbornly stared ahead of her. She was very aware of his eyes on her, stinging like needles. If sleep was arduous to achieve before now it was impossible. In any case, she closed her eyes and pretended to be at least. He wouldn’t know the difference and would leave her alone at some point.
But of course, she knew him well enough by now and he wasn’t as easily deterred. She didn’t know how much time passed but her eyes flew open as she felt her bed dip. Her breath hitched and she laid on full alert.
Then she felt the shadow of his touch on her neck and knew that he was close. Way too close that he should be. He was probably propped on his arm as she felt her pillow dip too.
“We don’t have to talk if you don’t want to.” He whispered close to her ears, his lips suggestively tracing her earlobe.
Despite the chills that his touch would usually send to her body, y/n stifled a treacherous gasp. Instead, her body stiffened and she almost pushed him away but she wasn’t sure that touching him wouldn’t backfire.
“If you think I’d let you lay a finger on me after you touched her, you’re sorely mistaken.”
“Who says I did?”
“Please, stick to manipulating one girl, okay? Move. away.”
He didn’t reply but the hand that was on her neck moved to her shoulder and pushed back so that she was laying on her back and facing him. Well, the darkness was too thick for her to actually see his face but she could feel his breath.
“Do not push me away.”
“Don’t tell me what to do.” Y/n bite back.
“You’re well aware of my plans, don’t act so betrayed now.”
“Well, maybe I’m tired of being a pawn in your schemes.”
“A pawn isn’t aware of its role nor of the whole plan.”
“Being smart with me won’t help, Aleksander. You want Alina? Fine, go get her. But leave me out of this.” Pulling her face free of his grip, she turned on her side. The shadows around him had dissipated a bit, allowing you to glimpse at his face.
“You cannot do this, y/n.” he growled, pushing her on her back again, “you said you were in this. You said you wanted me, that you were going to be by my side always. You can’t just change your mind. You can’t.” His voice was strangled with emotion almost breaking on some words.
Y/n had never heard his voice so filled with sorrow. Because that’s what he must be feeling. She thought that he was also feeling betrayed by her but then she realized-- no, he was afraid. Afraid of losing her.
He knew what he did and he also was aware that y/n was not one to mess with. She was just as stubborn as he was and just as prideful. What she had seen had hurt her and it was only what she felt for him that prevented him from being mindlessly dismissed and removed from her life. She had not resisted him more forcefully because she cared, because the wound was still french and that meant that there was still a tiny hope left.
“That was before you fell for another woman. I can’t stand by and watch you be with her. You can’t ask that of me.” She whispered, meeting his eyes. No matter how much she loved him, that was simply something she was not willing to put herself through.
“That’s not what I’m asking. That’s not what's happening.” He pledged. Y/n didn’t know if it was a trick of the moonlight seeping in from her window but she saw his eyes well with unshed tears.
“Isn’t it?”
“It isn’t.” He insisted, his hand on your jaw holding it closer. “Alina is a pawn, Alina doesn’t know what is going to happen, she doesn’t know me.” Heaving a sigh, Aleksander held her face, his thumb caressing her cheek.
“There is no one on this earth that has ever seen me more clearly than you do, solnishko. I know what you saw, I know what it looked like because that was intentional. But I trust you to know the difference between what it’s really happening and what it looks like because they’re not the same.” His eyes were alive with an intensity y/n had only seen a few times before. He was ancient and he was skilled at manipulation amongst other things. She always tried to keep that in mind but now, looking at him, she couldn’t help but feel like he was being genuine.
Why would he want me near? There wasn’t an ulterior motive for wanting her by her side. Yes, she was the only one who knew about his plans but that wasn’t it. If it was, he would have simply killed her. Took less time than this. Also, y/n knew that the power was in her hands. If she said no, that she couldn’t do this anymore, she was sure that Aleksander would let her go.
“But the way you were looking at her, Aleks, I just-” a lump formed in her throat as she recalled the look on his face, “you’re spending more and more time with her and I can’t help but fear that- I mean she’s literally the embodiment of sunshine.”
“You’ve never seen the way I look at you, then.” Thumb trailing over her lower lip now, he gave her a weak smile. “I swear that there’s no one dearer to me than you.”
“I’m not sure I can’t stand the idea of you kissing and touching her, Aleksander, I’m sorry.” Y/n insisted as well because she knew him and she knew that the way she worded things was crucial.
“That won’t happen then.” He assured but she was still not fully convinced.
“I promise it won’t come to that.” So Aleks rephrased. It was better but still not good enough. But they could work on that surely.
“It seems to me though, that I have not done a good job at showing you what you meant to me. I need to reinforce it, don’t you think?” He proposed, using the hand on her face to pull her closer to him.
“I agree.” y/n mumbled on his lips before they smashed together. She didn’t wait for him to initiate the kiss. She thought she had lost him tonight and had already been trying to plan her life without him. She wasn’t willing to waste any more time. She was going to show everyone that he was hers and only hers so as not to leave any more doubts around them. Fuck gossip.
Propping herself on her elbow she used it as leverage to reach up to meet him. The hand he had on her face moved backwards to hold her head while her hand did the same in his hair. Both of them pulled the other impossible close, not willing to leave the smallest of spaces between them.
Sitting up, y/n used her other hand to first the lapel of his kefta. She quickly unfasted the buttons to get rid of it before she pushed him on his back.
“She thinks she has a chance, uh.” She taunted as she straddled his waist, roughly gathering her sleeping gown around her waist while his hands instantly shot up to rest on her hips.
“She thinks she’ll be as lucky as seeing you like this?” she continued, her hands caressing his naked chest, “that she’ll have the chance of touching you? kissing you?” she leaned down, one hand at the nape of his head to make him meet her halfway. It wasn’t a long kiss, she needed to make a point after all. Pulling away, she bit his lower lip earning a moan from him.
“To feel you like this?” she whispered in his mouth as her hips wiggled over his clothed member. His hands tightened his hold on her hips, pushing her down on it increasing the pressure.
“She’s delusional,” Aleks gasped as her mouth trailed kisses along his jaw and neck where it nipped and sucked.
“Mh,” y/n agreed, “let’s make sure she knows.” She promised before her mouth went back to sucking a few hickeys on his neck. Aleks only moaned and gave her more space to work on. His hands trailed up from her waist, cupping her breasts before playing with her nipples.
As her mouth lowered on his collarbone, Aleks decided that enough was enough. His hands roughly gripped the end of her gown before hastily pulling it up and off her body. One arm snaked over her waist pulling her flush against him as he sat up.
“Enough teasing,” he warned as the hand that wasn’t on her quickly discarded his undergarments.
“As you wish, moy sovregni,” she whispered sultrily on his lips knowing fully what effect those words had on him. Aleksander growled on her mouth, his hands kneading her ass cheeks as he gently lowered her on him.
Gasping as she felt every inch of him enter her, y/n gripped his shoulders as she started to move. Aleks’ hands guided her as she set a steady pace.
“She’s never going to feel your hands on her body,” she breathed as Aleks’ hips snapped up, setting a rougher pace.
“You’re mine.” She growled possessively on his lips as her hips met his.
“I’m yours, y/n. Just as you’re mine.” His tone matched hers. He sealed his promise with a bruising kiss. The trusting was becoming more and more frantic and Aleks’ could feel y/n clench around him.
With no previous warning, he lowered his hands from her ass to her thighs so that he could hold her while he changed their position. Guiding her legs to wrap around his waist, Aleksander leaned on his knees while he pushed her upper body down with his chest. Y/n gasped on his lips not knowing if it was for the movement, for the change of position that meant that he was now able to reach deeper than before or because she could feel her orgasm approaching.
Whatever the reason may be, Aleks swallowed her gasp as his lips refused to leave hers. Snapping his hips, he moved his hands from her legs. One went to stimulate her clit while the other choked her lightly. He knew that this combo would prove to send her over the edge. Not long after, as a matter of fact, he felt y/n’s nails on his shoulders as well as her walls tightening around him. He was not behind.
While y/n whimpered his name over and over as her orgasm hit her, Aleksander’s thrusts began to falter. With one deep thrust, he emptied inside her, obscene sounds leaving his mouth.
He leaned over y/n’s body, both of their breaths heavy, they basked in the afterglow. Aleks’ head rested over her chest, comforted by her steady heartbeat while y/n’s hands trailed over his back.
Once their breath had levelled and they could regain control over their limbs, Aleks propped himself over his elbow, his nose nuzzling y/n’s making her giggle at the soft touch. She loved these rare moments of softness and intimacy between them. If she could, she’d never let them end.
“I promise you’ll never have to doubt me again.”
“If you keep this up, it’d be impossible for me to.” She chuckled, referring to her limp body. She couldn’t trust her body to move. Sex with Aleksander always had this effect on her.
“Good to know I can still satisfy you.” He smirked as he leaned down for a small kiss. Giggling on his lips, y/n pulled him close, making him rest his weight on her rather than his elbow.
“I’m thoroughly sated, my love. You have nothing to worry about in that department.” Aleks couldn’t see her but could feel the smirk on her lips. Intertwining their legs, he got more comfortable on her. Her arms held him in a tight embrace.
“You’ll do well to remember it, dearest.” His voice came out muffled since his face rested between her breasts but y/n got what he meant anyway. Laughing at the idea that she could ever need anyone else, y/n held him closer to her chest. The embrace her form of a promise to him.
She had everything she’d ever need right here in her arms.

YOUR POV
“There’s room for more!” Loki yelled over the cries of scared children and their crying families. There was no way he would send a half-empty escape pod on its way to Midgard. That’s when he saw a child all by herself a little further away. She was clinging onto the wall for dear life and the ship trembled due to the impact of getting shot at. Her parents were nowhere to be seen. Dead. Loki felt sick to his stomach when he knew they were most likely dead. Thanos’ children were slaying kids and their parents heartlessly and they had the audacity to say they were being rescued. That their deaths were part of something bigger than life itself.
They viewed Thanos as a god who was being merciful even when he ripped a beating heart out of someone's chest.
Loki’s heart clenched in his chest painfully. Before it would be too late, he made his way to the tiny child and picked her up carefully. She seemed to recognize the prince but she wasn’t afraid of him. Instead, she hugged Loki so she wouldn’t fall out of his grasp.
“Where’s mommy?” The girl sounded absolutely petrified.
Loki didn’t know what to say as he made his way to the pod. Once he reached it, he saw a woman by the entrance.
“You’ll be safe here,” Loki promised the child as he handed her over to the lady. That’s all he had time for as he returned to the corridor. A particularly loud blast made him stumble over his feet and he had to catch his balance by taking support from the metal wall. The lights flickered, which meant the electronics of the ship were injured. There was a strange smokey smell in the air, which lingered with the irony stench of blood.
Loki couldn’t believe this was happening. Had Thanos finally come for him? Or did Thanos somehow know of the tesseract? Either way, if Thanos succeeded, he would kill two birds with one stone. The thought of this being all his fault made Loki nauseous. Guilt was nibbling at his skin and he knew it would eat him alive in the end. He never wished for this to happen!
As he ran down the corridors frantically searching for Asgardians that needed help, he heard different kinds of cries. People were letting out guttural screams. Others were pleading for their lives. Listening to the massacre that was taking place was worse than any nightmare Loki ever recalled having. They were all drained after Ragnarok and now Thanos had found them. It was haunting how ruthless fate could be.
Footsteps began to approach Loki and they were awfully close. Too close for his liking. He was quick to grab his daggers and turn to face whoever dared try to sneak up on him. When he saw a familiar figure, he nearly dropped the blades from his hands. Seeing you there was like shock itself punched him in the face.
You were there, real and clear as day.
How long had it been since the last time he saw you?
Ever since Loki had found out about his true nature, his life had gone downhill. After he ended up with Thanos and went through pure hell with him, he had changed. During his time away from Asgard, he had only missed one person truly - you. You, who had been by his side through everything. You, who hadn’t loved him any less when you saw his deep blue skin and those crimson red eyes that in Loki’s mind resembled blood. You, who had seen him as the rightful king of Asgard when everyone else betrayed him. The light of his life, the angel that had cared for him even when he felt like a monster.
You, who hadn’t been on Asgard when Thor brought him back to face Odin in trial. Loki had spent a lot of time in his cell, alone. He waited for you to appear but you never did and no one ever told him why. They rather left him to drown in his own vicious thoughts. It wasn’t until Loki pretended to be Odin that he began to learn what had happened on Asgard during his exile.
The people at the palace loved to gossip. Some claimed you had stolen a ship and left Asgard behind for good, that living as Loki’s widow had been too hard for you. In Loki’s darkest hours, he wondered if you truly felt ashamed for being associated with him. So ashamed in fact, that you had left it all behind and started anew. Sometimes, he believed that, but it never stopped him from trying to find you. He had searched night and day but it seemed like you had vanished into thin air. It had killed him more every day living in the unknown. His only wish had been that you were okay.
Now there you were, looking like you had never left. In a moment of pure shock, Loki couldn’t even begin to comprehend how you appeared on the ship - seemingly out of nowhere. He was happy to see you, despite how appalling everything else was at that moment.
“Y/N,” Loki spoke your name softly and dared to blink. When you were still there as he opened his eyes, he felt goosebumps all over his skin.
You looked at him so innocently, but then he noticed that something was off. The look in your eyes was cold. You weren’t in your typical Asgardian gear. Instead, you were dressed in dark armour that Loki could’ve sworn he had seen before, but he didn’t know where. Nevertheless, it made him feel uneasy.
“It’s been a while, Loki,” You attempted a smile as you walked closer to him, your husband. It still counted since he had never truly died, right?
Loki didn’t stop you as you walked right up to him. His eyes never left yours. Part of him wanted to kiss you, to hold you and feel you were real, but the shrieks in the background reminded him of how dangerous everything was. The daggers disappeared from his hands and Loki held you by your shoulders. He needed to see that his hands wouldn't go right through you, that he hadn't lost it.
“You need to get off this ship, Y/N!” He told you seriously. There was profound fear in his voice.
Instead of being worried at all, you just smiled back at him.
That was so unlike you.
“Y/N, do you hear me?”
“Oh, I do,” You confirmed nonchalantly, “I’m not going anywhere. Not yet.”
A bloodcurdling cry startled Loki. They were coming closer and closer. The two of you wouldn’t be safe in that passageway for long. By now, his heart was racing with his thoughts. He felt panic settling into his bones.
Before Loki could say another word, you cupped his face rather gently. The fact that you didn’t seem disturbed by what was happening was eerie to Loki. He knew that you had a heart much bigger than anyone else he knew of. The version of you he remembered wouldn’t have been so calm. Something was terribly wrong.
“I need something,” You admitted and batted your eyelashes. Before, Loki would’ve found that quite adorable, but at that moment it was so wrong. He had been so ecstatic to see you and know you were alive, but now he almost wanted to run the other way.
“What?” Loki barely found his voice at that point. He felt sick and heartbroken. This had to be a nightmare, the worst kind.
“The Tesseract, Loki. I really need it,” You blurted it out.
Shivers ran down his spine. How did you know about it? Why did you even care? He was unsure if he could even trust you with the knowledge that he had it in his possession. Usually, he would’ve trusted you with his life without any hesitation, but you had been gone for years and returned like this, with bizarre motives.
You returned at the same time as Thanos and you were looking for the tesseract. Loki wasn’t a fool. He finally put two and two together and the realization was too arduous to believe. The idea of you and Thanos even meeting was something Loki could only see happening in his worst nightmares, but he was afraid it had already occurred. If so, he needed to hear it from you,
“Is Thanos making you do this?”
The tone of his voice seemed to offend you as you sent him a nasty glare. Your softness turned harsh and you pushed Loki against the metal wall with a loud thud. Before he could get out of the way, you grabbed your own dagger and pressed it against his neck so it was ever so slightly pressing against his exposed skin.
“He is not making me do anything. I am glad to serve the all-mighty Thanos. I won’t fail him, unlike you,” You snarled at Loki spitefully.
Never in a million years had Loki imagined this moment to happen. One where you would be fighting against each other. It was supposed to the two of you against the nine realms. Being held like that by the one person he loved more than anything was tearing his heart to shreds, but he tried not to show it.
Deep down, he knew it wasn’t truly you. He knew exactly what Thanos had done to you so you would act like this, and it only made it hurt so much more. It felt like someone was pouring salt into an open wound, and his entire body, heart and soul were wounded.
“Now give me the tesseract and we will be on our merry way,” You tried to obtain it again. This time you seemed more serious. Was it the tone of your voice or your weapon pressed against his pulse? Loki didn’t know.
“I don’t have it,” Loki lied as smoothly as he could because even thinking straight at that moment felt impossible. The world was caving in around him at supersonic speed.
You pressed the sharp edge of the blade closer to him, feeling how just a little bit more pressure would've broken his skin “You’re a great liar, my dear, but I know that’s not the truth.”
Loki didn’t want to fight you, but he didn’t see another way out. And it was good for him that you had learned most of the tricks from him. Your every move would be more easily predictable for Loki. He had to find a way to distract you.
“Why do you need it?” That was a foolish question. He knew damn well what Thanos would do if he got his dirty hands on the infinity stones.
“Why do you care?” You didn’t answer his silly question.
Suddenly, Loki grabbed your wrist tightly and yanked your arm to the side. He tried to be as gentle as he could, but Loki knew you wouldn’t go down without a fight.
At least your weapon fell out of your hand, but you knew how to defend yourself without it. So did Loki.
Loki tried to turn things around so he would have you pinned down against the wall, but you didn’t let him get that far. As he turned you around so your back was pressed firmly against his chest, you kicked your legs against the wall hard, pushing both of you back. Loki took the biggest impact as he fell on the floor, with you on top of him. Quickly, you rolled out of his grasp, turning around in one swift movement so that you were now sat on top of him, with your legs tightly against both his sides.
A powerful orb of magic grew above your fingertips and you brought it closer to Loki’s face - so close that he could feel the heat of your burning powers. The magic created an electric sensation on your skin. It felt like you pushed your fingers deep into warm sand. Toying with it was exhilarating, and seeing the astonished look on Loki’s face made it so much better. The green light of your powers cast light in his eyes, only deepening the look of disbelief that was painted all over him.
“It’s sweet that you’re trying not to hurt me,” You taunted him at that point, “but that doesn’t mean I won’t hurt you.”
“This isn’t you, Y/N,” Loki groaned. He was so sure of himself.
You tilted your head and smirked, looking at him like a cat would at a mouse. “I don’t know, Loki. It’s been a while,” You explained casually and leaned closer and closer to his face, stopping when your noses brushed against one another. By now, Loki was frozen on the spot. He was trying to come up with a plan and he felt hopeless.
“I’ve changed,” You whispered to him and felt tempted to kiss him, to taste him. Would you taste his fear? His heartbreak? You were sure it would taste sweet.
“The torture must’ve been painful,” Loki pushed his feelings aside. Yes, he felt like his heart had been ripped to shreds, but he had to do something. He had to surprise you, even if it would hurt. Words could hurt more than actions, and if Loki wanted to survive and to help you, he needed to reach the real you even if the only way to do so was cruel.
How did he know? You narrowed your eyes and surprisingly, found yourself waiting for him to continue.
"I was trained well."
"Trained?" Loki spat out harshly, "I know you're afraid. He has promised you something worse than the pain he has inflicted on you already. It won't happen. If you let Thanos continue his reign, he will not care about your loyalty!"
"Shut up!" That was too much for you. With tears brimming your eyes from anger, you put your hand over his mouth to silence him. He didn't budge and you didn't know why.
You pushed the memories aside. The painful memories of the time Thanos first found you. It was wrong to think of it as torture. No, he had shown you what you're truly capable of. It was training. Training to become a stronger person after the hell you endured on Asgard.
But now that you found yourself thinking about it, it seemed like the memories were all blurred as if you were looking into the past through a broken lens. Someone had spilt oil all over it and the pictures were warped.
"I know you have it," You needed the tesseract. "Give it to me and then this will all be over," you removed your hand from his mouth because it looked like he wanted to speak.
Loki knew that if he’d push you, your magic could burn him, but at the moment he couldn’t come up with another plan. He couldn’t just stay on the ground as people were being killed on the other side of the wall!
"Okay," Loki blurted out. Okay?
For a moment, he had you surprised which was the perfect distraction.
Loki grabbed your wrists tightly and pushed you to the side, but not quickly enough. You released your magic and it graced the side of his face, making him growl out either in pain or frustration - or both. The two of you rolled over and this time Loki was on top, holding your arms pinned above your head. You were trapped because of one mistake. You couldn't believe Loki had used the element of surprise to turn the situation upside down.
Furiously, you tried to kick your legs free, but he had you pinned down beneath him and Loki was strong. There was no point in squirming, you had to come up with another idea.
The two of you faced each other and Loki revealed his face and the damage you had done. Your magic had burned his skin and left a bloody cut on his eyebrow. It had just barely missed his eye. If he lived, it would surely leave a scar.
You flinched when a drop of his blood hit your cheek and it rolled down the side of your face.
"What are you going to do, kill me?"
Loki could never bring himself to kill you. He wouldn't be able to live with himself with your blood on his hands. No. He had other ideas. Loki remembered what it was like to be under Thanos' control. He remembered how much it hurt to even think about the torture. He had to remind you, he had to make you see that this wasn't the real you.
"This version of you, or I certainly hope so," Loki replied mysteriously. Before you could ask him to elaborate, Loki released your wrist and slammed the palm of his hand against your forehead. In a split second, you were in a different place - in your head. You could've sworn you heard him mutter "I'm sorry," before everything turned black.
It was hot, burning hot. Metal chains were attached to you and they were glowing red. Torching. You could only scream in pain as the metal sunk into your skin, your bones, your nerves. It felt like he had chained your mind and with the tiniest movement of his finger, he could make you do his dirty work.
He, Thanos, was sitting on his throne. He was the puppet master and you the puppet. He didn't look at you fondly. No. He was smiling as he watched you cry your lungs out, letting out animalistic growls as the pain got worse. It was so overwhelming that every once in a while, you would scream until you passed out. But every time, one of his children would be there to wake you up.
It was time for another round. And another. And yet another. Would it ever end?
Each time you tried to resist the chains, the strings that were sewn onto you and connected to his fingertips, it hurt more. Eventually, you learned that allowing the strings to tighten around you made it hurt less. It almost felt good, like a long embrace after a long day.
"I don't want to hurt you, my child."
Lies. You knew that all he said were nasty lies, but sometimes it was easier to believe lies than the truth.
"Make it stop!" You would beg him. How long had you been there?
You could remember Thanos touching your face gently, which was so comforting after everything you had endured. At the same time, it made you sick. You couldn't believe that the one who had caused you distress could have such a gentle touch.
"You're ready," Thanos had realized. The Other had appeared right before you and his fingertips were pressed against one another, making him look like he was deep in thought. You had no idea what they were doing, but the next thing you knew was that you no longer felt pain.
The chains, the strings, they were all invisible. It looked like you were free, but the weight of the metal was still pressed against your skin. Had you imagined it?
No,
Deep down you knew that the strings were still attached to you, but they had only made it seem like you had a choice.
"Excellent," The Other's voice surprised you. You merely blinked and you had returned to the vessel. Loki was above you and the Other was standing right there, "You found him."
The Other used his powers to push Loki off you. Shock had made your entire body numb and you couldn't scramble up to your feet. It felt like your limbs had been turned to stone and you were anchored to the floor.
Loki got up slowly with his arms raised in surrender. He was well aware of the powers the Other had and Loki wasn't going to fight him now. If he followed you for long enough, then maybe just maybe he could come up with a plan. Loki looked at you as you finally got up. As you stood next to the Other, you couldn't believe your legs carried you. Something was so wrong. You felt sick and you couldn't shake it off. It felt like something had snapped within you, but you didn't know what.
"He is waiting for you," The Other explained as he turned to walk away, most likely to wherever Thanos was waiting.
Loki had no choice but to follow, and you walked behind, making sure he didn't try to escape.
Why did Loki make you remember that? What did he think he would obtain with making you relive something so awful? It hadn't worked, right?
There he was. Thanos was standing by a hole that had been ripped into the side of the ship. Magic was keeping it sealed so the vacuum of space wouldn't suck everyone into it. But still, the emptiness of space wasn't frightening at all compared to the titan who was standing right there.
Loki swallowed thickly as he saw him again. It had been years but he remembered everything like it had happened yesterday. Seeing Thanos standing in the middle of the piles of bodies, in the room that smelled like smoke and blood, was sickening. Thanos hadn't just killed a part of Loki. He had just slaughtered these innocent Asgardians with the help of his so-called children. He had taken you.
He will make you long for something as sweet as pain
Loki closed his eyes and took a deep, shaky breath. They had stayed true to their threats.
"I know what it’s like to lose," Thanos turned around now that he knew Loki was there. At long last. Thanos had not forgotten what Loki had failed to do, and Thanos was a man of his words.
"To feel so desperately that you’re right yet to fail, nonetheless," Thanos continued dramatically and slowly made his way closer to Loki. He saw Thor on the ground, bloodied and weak. The brother of Loki. As tempting as the idea was to torture Thor right in front of the god of mischief, Thanos had different plans. If there was only one way Loki would ever give him the tesseract, it was going to be in order to save you. You were Loki's true weakness.
"It’s frightening. Turns the legs to jelly. I ask you, to what end?" Thanos looked Loki right in the eye. He could see that Loki was afraid, yet Loki never looked away from him. He was either too proud or fearless. Thanos had liked that about Loki initially. But he had failed Thanos greatly. It had cost him infinity stones.
"Dread it. Run from it. Destiny arrives all the same. And now, it’s here. Or should I say I am," Thanos finished his dramatics because it was time for action, to turn the wheels and see the bigger picture. This was the end of an era and a new beginning for a different universe. In Thanos' mind, only he could bring balance and order. He gestured for you to walk up to his side.
Too afraid of the idea of what would happen if you disobeyed, you walked right up to Thanos, feeling like a fly that was willingly flying into cobwebs. When you were close enough, you kneeled and dipped your head so he wouldn't see the worry in your eyes. It wasn't there before.
"I didn't obtain the tesseract from him, but I am sure that he has it, father," You muttered quietly. Why did you say that? There was a pounding headache growing within your skull. You didn't know what was right or wrong anymore and you couldn't fight it either.
Father
Loki clenched his jaw as he followed the situation closely. Hearing that made his blood boil. He wanted to rip Thanos apart after this. Never in a million years had he imagined this, to see you pledge your alliance to Thanos, kneeling before him and respecting him. Thanos didn't deserve that. Hell, Thanos didn't even deserve to look at you. It was wrong.
At that moment, Loki worried that his trick hadn't worked. That the memories hadn't awakened anything within you. That it was all too late now. This was the end, the one thing in life that was inevitable.
"I know, my child," Thanos let out a sigh. Then he grabbed you by your jaw like he had done before, forcing you to face him. "I know he has it," He repeated and suddenly his touch turned violent. He closed his hand around your neck tightly and you gasped for air helplessly. Your hands - tiny compared to his - grabbed his fingers and you tried to pry them apart, but he was tougher than you. Panic shot through your entire body when you realized you couldn't breathe. It turned your blood to ice and your poor heart was beating so hard you were afraid it would explode.
What was he doing?
The moment he pulled you to your feet, so high that you had to stand on the tips of your toes, he spoke, "The tesseract or her life," Thanos smiled devilishly, showing no remorse. He didn't care about you. You were a pawn in his game and if you would die at his feet, he would just walk over you and carry on.
"You choose," Thanos put the weight of the world on Loki's shoulders.
Loki wanted to rescue you from that monster, but he wasn't stupid. With all of Thanos' children surrounding him, he knew that he would be dead before he could reach you. Nonetheless, it didn't mean he wouldn't try. Seeing you clawing at Thanos' hand, fighting for something as simple as air and not getting it was heartbreaking. Loki's body was trembling with hatred and hurt. Tears blurred his vision and he struggled to keep his composure.
How had it all come to this?
The thought of Thanos with the tesseract was haunting. Soon he would have all the stones and he would destroy reality as they knew it. But Loki could live with that. He couldn't live knowing you had died when he had a chance to save you. Perhaps he was selfish for choosing you over the entire galaxy, but Loki didn't care. Nothing mattered if he would lose you again.
"Alright, stop!" Loki made up his mind. "I choose her," Finally, Thanos released his grip on you and let you fall on the cold ground. Your hands wrapped around your throat gently and you coughed painfully. It took you a while to finally breathe again, which was a huge relief for both Loki and you.
And now Loki was holding the tesseract. It was so bright that it painted the space blue. It was almost too bright to look at. The power within the stone was so strong, you could sense it like heat from the sun in spring after a long and cold winter. Loki was tempted to use the tesseract to grab you and escape, but he quickly shut those thoughts away. Thanos would follow him for the end of all days.
"You...you really are the worst, brother," Thor was following the situation to the best of his abilities. He spat out blood as he watched Loki holding the cube. It made him sad. Everything they ever knew was destroyed in the name of power, pure and raw power that the tesseract could offer. Was it worth it?
Loki glanced at Thor who was too weak to even get up. He didn't care too much about what he had to say. Then he looked at you. There you were, on the ground struggling to breathe after Thanos had crushed your windpipe. There was bruising on your skin that would only deepen with time. Time that you possibly wouldn't have after this.
He saw the tears running down your face, but you didn't sob and whimper. It seemed like you were as still as stone. You couldn't bring yourself to face Loki.
"I assure you," Loki found his voice and he addressed both you and Thor with his words, "the sun will shine on us again."
What did he mean by that?
You were ashamed to tilt your gaze to see him, to see the tesseract. The damn infinity stone had ruined it all! It was why Thanos had wrecked Loki, why he had destroyed you too. Why so many people were now dead. If you had one wish that could come true, you would wish for the tesseract to be destroyed forever.
Thanos had his back turned to you. Loki was slowly but surely making his way closer to the titan, almost like he was afraid to move but he forced his body to comply. Why? Why would he trade the tesseract for your life? It seemed like whatever spell you had been under had worn off. You were free, but it was more terrifying than being under Thanos' control under these circumstances. He didn't need you, and soon enough the vessel would be blown to bits. All of you, even Loki.
Would you be able to tell him how sorry you were?
"Your optimism is misplaced, Asgardian," Thanos wasn't fond of Loki's strange choice of words.
"Well for one thing I'm not Asgardian," Loki replied quickly. It sounded a little bit witty, which was confusing. Where did the boost of confidence come from? Was he up to something?
"And for another," He continued dramatically. This time it was Thanos' turn to be confused.
"We have a Hulk."
Everything that happened after that happened so fast that you could hardly keep up with it. Loki dropped the tesseract and he leapt toward you. Thanos barely had time to turn around when a huge, green beast appeared out of nowhere and it seemed angry. It was eager to fight the titan.
Loki had you up on your feet in no time and the two of you ran away from the immediate danger. He led you to one of the many corridors on the vessel until no one could possibly see you. They were too distracted by the Hulk to even think about Loki and you. It wasn't until he was right in front of you that you could comprehend what was going on. He was kneeling on the floor and you were sat against the wall for support. Your hands were trembling so hard, it seemed like you were freezing up and you couldn't make it stop.
Loki had tricked Thanos.
He was relieved when you didn't fight him, yet he was unsure if it meant you were no longer under Thanos' control, or if you were simply too tired to fight.
He cupped your face gently and searched for answers in your expression. Back in the day, he had been able to read you like an open book.
You put your hands around his wrists and pulled him closer. You were desperate for the comfort he could bring in the midst of the living hell you were stuck in. How did he not hate you?
"I'm s- I'm sorry," You whimpered, finally cracking like a plate that had fallen on the floor. "I'm sorry."
"Shh, it's okay," Loki couldn't possibly let you apologize for what had happened. He was possibly the one person who understood exactly what you had gone through and what it was like to follow orders from that monster. There was not an ounce of judgement to be found in his heart.
What mattered now was that you were together again. You could come up with a plan, but you had to work fast. As much as Loki wanted to hold you and comfort you, to feel that you were real, he knew there wasn't enough time for that.
"We need to get off this thing," Loki's mind was running a marathon as he tried to come up with an escape plan.
"They're gonna blow it up," You explained, feeling how bad your lips were quivering as you spoke. The moment Thanos had what he came for, they would leave and destroy everything they'd leave behind.
Shivers ran down Loki's spine as he heard that. It only confirmed that you had to act quickly. Loki wasn't sure how long the Hulk could fight Thanos. Would they be able to rescue Thor? How much time did they have?
The blood in the wound you had caused on his face was beginning to dry. It looked gnarly and all you wanted was to make it all better. Knowing that you had hurt him made you sick with guilt.
"I'm sorry, Loki. I didn't w-want to fight you," You sniffled, breaking Loki's train of thought. For the first time, he felt lost. He didn't really know what to do. Were there any escape pods left?
"I know," Loki assured you. "I know that. I was in your shoes when I was on Midgard," He explained briefly, unaware whether or not you knew of it. Had Thanos talked about him to you?
A sense of impending doom weighed you two down. If this was the end, then at least you were together, right? You and Loki against the nine realms, you would face the end together if there wasn't another way out. Whenever you had pictured your final day, you had imagined something entirely different than this. You would be old together, with hundreds of stories of your shared life. You would be surrounded by people you cared about. It would be calm, the exact opposite of this.
"I love you," You needed to tell him that. Any moment could be your last. The world would cave in and you would be gone forever.
Loki hated how much that sounded like a farewell, but at the same time, it had been so long since he had last heard those three words, let alone from you. Perhaps it was sick and twisted, but it made him smile.
"I love you too," Loki was sure of it. He had never stopped loving you and he didn't think he was even capable of that.
It seemed like you acted on instinct. You found enough strength to push yourself right against Loki. There was no hesitation in your actions as you kissed him. Loki closed his eyes when he felt your trembling lips pressed against his. Your scent, still sweet and familiar despite it all, punched its way into his lungs. He held your face gently but the kiss was passionate, almost despairing.
You wanted to scream out in agony because at last, you were reunited with Loki but not in the way you imagined. You felt like the shell of the person you were before, and now you knew for a fact that Thanos had done the exact same things to Loki. That titan had killed your souls beyond repair. But all you could do was kiss Loki and hold him and hope that he could feel how sorry you were. You didn't want to let go, afraid that if you did, it would all end. Just like that.
Loki broke the kiss, and for a moment you rested your foreheads against one another like you had done so many times before. It was comforting. You both wanted to stay close like that, but you recognised that you couldn't. Letting go of each other and getting up on your weary feet was so incredibly difficult, but it had to be done.
The world around you began to glow brighter. You quickly held onto Loki, startled as the mysterious light surrounded the two of you.
Loki held his breath as he studied the warm glimmering magic that had swallowed you. In between the bright rays of light, he saw all the colours of the rainbow. Shimmering. He saw reds and blues, yellows and greens, shining brighter than the other and it changed smoothly.
The Bifrost
He didn't know how or why, but he knew for a fact that you were in the magical portal. He couldn't see beyond it anymore. He couldn't feel the floor beneath his feet. It was like he was levitating mid-air, with you tightly in his arms.
Heimdall must've conjured the forefathers, letting their powers flow through him one last time. Where to? Loki assumed that anywhere would be better than where they had been mere seconds ago.
And it was a miracle.
Tumblr media
A/N: I think it would've made more sense for Heimdall to send Thor or Loki to earth rather than the Hulk. So that's why I ended it like that
I'd absolutely love to hear your feedback! <3

Time for some BL/Danmei novel recs!
You guys have probably (maybe) seen my novels list here - [X] - but it’s more for my own tracking than anything else, so here’s a brief list (I’ll probably do full ones of the ones I really love in another post, probably on Minmo).
The ones elaborated on below with the asterisks are the novels I’ve actually finished reading.
*since everyone more or less knows MXTX’s works - TGCF, MDZS and SVSSS, I’ll skip those!
1. SCI 迷案集 | SCI Mystery Series by 耳雅*
Summary: Bai Yutang and Zhan Zhao are childhood friends and rivals that end up working together under the newly established SCI unit as co-leads, with Bai Yutang providing the brawn as Captain and Zhan Zhao the brains as Vice Captain and the team’s resident genius psychologist. They solve cases together and slowly unravel a wider conspiracy that involves their parents’ generation and beyond. At the same time they also realize that they’re meant for each other!
Other CPs: Bai Jintang (Bai Yutang’s older brother) & the medical examiner, Gongsun Ce, Bai Chi (Bai Yutang’s younger cousin) & magician Zhao Zhen, and at least three other gay pairings, one of which is considered another main couple of sorts from Vol. 2 onwards
Status: Incomplete (Began in 2010, author is still going on strong with one chapter every one or two months, we’re halfway through Vol. 5 right now and it’s been 10 years ;-; Love that the author is going on strong!! Everyone on JJWXC are like “please author it’s okay if you go slow as long as you keep going we’re here for you” and jfc I understand the fear of this not completing, also when will Vol. 5 be completed and printed?!! I need to complete the collection)
Translations: Unfortunately, only the first volume has been translated well so far on novel updates. The one on Wattpad seems to have caught up, but I would not recommend that one.
Drama/Live-Action: Season 1 was filmed and released in 2018 under the same name with slightly changed names for the characters. Season 2 was supposed to start filming this month but... oh well. First season basically covered Vol. 1 novel from start to end.
*I love this one only because it was my very first danmei and so it’ll forever have a special place in my heart, and also because it’s still ongoing so ya know, I relive how much I love this every month
2. 成化十四年 | Cheng Hua’s Fourteenth Year (The Sleuth of Ming Dynasty) by 梦溪石*
Summary: Tang Fan, a prefectural judge, and Sui Zhou, a high ranking officer in the Embroidered Uniform Guards, meet while trying to solve a murder case. Both of them end up partnering very well together, Sui Zhou ends up inviting Tang Fan to live with him, and the rest is history. Through their days living together and solving cases + a larger conspiracy involving the royal palace, they fall in love. Adding to this mix is also Wang Zhi, a powerful, young eunuch who befriends the pair, and the three of them basically help the crown prince to overcome challenges and his enemies to become the next Emperor
Other CPs: None XD
Status: Complete!
Translations: Ongoing on several websites. I’m only translating relationship highlights, but here’s an introduction post I did for it, if you guys would like somewhere to start without getting too invested - [X]
Drama/Live-Action: The Sleuth of Ming Dynasty was released earlier this year, directed by Jackie Chan and starring Darren Chen and Paul Fu, but cases are a little different and there are new characters in the show that weren’t from the novel etc.
3. 杀破狼 | Shapolang by Priest*
Summary: Set in a steampunk universe where flying boats named ‘kites’ and flying armour exist. Young teenager Chang Geng lives with his mother and stepfather - the former abuses him and the latter neglects him, and the only person that he cares about (and cares about him) is Shen Shiliu, his (very young) godfather. He realizes his identity as a royal prince when the Man tribe invades his city and Shen Shiliu, whose real name is Gu Yun, turns out to be an army general whose duty was to protect Chang Geng in secret (among other things).
Chang Geng has been critically poisoned by his mother (who’s not actually his birth mother, if I recall she’s an aunt) which leads to him getting terrible dreams frequently with the end result of him being driven into insanity, while Gu Yun is half blind, half deaf due to poisoning + injury when he was much younger, and he can only regain his hearing and sight fully when he takes a medicine that is slowly losing its effectiveness with every dosage he has.
The both of them navigate learning about each other again, falling in love a few years later when Chang Geng is all grown up and also unravel conspiracies and fight bad guys (both external threats and internal as in the current Emperor and other parties) XD
*Note: The age old debate is that Gu Yun ‘preyed’ on and also ‘groomed’ Chang Geng, but I disagree and stand by the fact that Gu Yun was 90% of the time not around while Chang Geng grew from a teenager to a young adult as he was fighting wars elsewhere, while Chang Geng refused to stay at the Gu manor and insisted on running around, travelling on his own and seeing the world for a few years before they met again. And it was Chang Geng who’d always loved Gu Yun and devoted himself to caring about him, making advances on him etc. when he became an adult
Other CPs: Shen Yi (Gu Yun’s second-in-command) & Chen Qingxu (a renowned physician who ends up healing both Chang Geng and Gu Yun of their ailments)
Status: Complete!
Translations: Fully translated the last I heard, it’s up there in the list of holy grail BL/danmei novels, so I’m sure it’s done hahaha.
Drama/Live-Action: Filming in progress!
*This is up there in the hall of fame for danmei novels for more than just the amazing content and writing - It’s also famous for being one of the most complex novels ever. I don’t know how the translations team did it because DAMN it was complex and I read all my novels in Chinese without much issues but I was honestly STRUGGLING WITH this one and I went through some existential crisis while reading because I was like ‘did I ever learn Chinese, am I even Chinese’ XD
4. 默读 | Silent Reading by Priest*
Summary: Luo Wenzhou, a police captain, and his team including best friend and partner Tao Ran, face a few challenging cases that end up being small parts of a larger conspiracy, and end up having to consult with Fei Du, a flamboyant, charming and flirty, young and rich CEO, who Luo Wenzhou describes as someone who is an expert at ‘crimes’. Not deduction, not solving crimes, but someone who is familiar with how the murderer or culprits would commit crimes. Both Luo Wenzhou and Tao Ran know Fei Du well, because they first met when Fei Du was in high school, when he called the police because his mother had hanged herself in the house, and since then Tao Ran and Luo Wenzhou look out for him, spending holidays with him, giving him presents here and there. Luo Wenzhou and Fei Du overcome their misunderstandings of each other and fall in love while solving all the cases and the larger conspiracy behind it.
Other CPs: Tao Ran and someone he knew first from his school days or was a neighbour when he was younger, I can’t remember, but they meet again at a blind date and end up living in the same building on different floors XD
Status: Complete!
Translations: Complete!! There’s a huge post floating around on Tumblr with all the links (I can’t find it right now) and on Twitter you can also find the collated, epub versions etc.
Drama/Live-Action: Rights for a live-action was signed, no casting confirmation or set dates yet
5. 犯罪心理 | Criminal Psychology by 长洱*
Summary: Police captain Xing Conglian drags psychologist Lin Chen out of seclusion/hiding to solve a case that is indirectly tied to him. Lin Chen was involved in a case a few years ago that led to four deaths - these four victims were the sons/daughters of four of the five huge old-money (super rich) families in the country and these family members sought to make Lin Chen’s life very difficult for him afterwards by making him lose all the jobs he can find, by surveilling his every move and ensuring that he’s not happy etc. Because of that, he backed out of the police force as well and quietly lived as a school dorm administrator, which is where Xing Conglian finds him a few years later. Lin Chen fakes his death after the first case (not deliberately but kind of a by-the-way thing), but as fate would have it, he ends up meeting Xing Conglian on another case, and he decides that he’ll move in with him and also involve himself again, consequences be damned, and they fall in love!
Other CPs: None XD
Status: Complete!
Translations: I think it’s not complete yet.
Drama/Live-Action: None that I know of.
6. 死亡万花筒 | Kaleidoscope of Death by 西子绪* (MY ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE)
Summary: Supernatural setting where people who are about to die get a second chance to live. These individuals are either in the midst of a dangerous situation (for e.g. a shootout or a deadly mugging incident) or are about to get into accidents (for e.g. an entire bus going off a bridge or a chandelier dropping from above and crushing the person underneath) or are ill (recently diagnosed with cancer or are terminally ill with a condition for e.g.) - The list is endless, and in the situation between life and death, 12 doors will appear before them.
It is said that once these individuals finish all 12 doors, they will truly get a second chance at life and survive whatever cause of death they were imminently facing.
Each door represents a creepy, supernatural mystery, and Lin Qiushi finds himself in a strange place after opening a door when he was trying to enter his apartment one day. He meets Ruan Baijie, a beautiful, tall woman who he happens to meet, and they realize that in this strange world, he and other individuals who came through the door have to complete a given task, find a key and an exit door, and make it out alive. The others in the team (some of which have already gone through several doors) explain to Lin Qiushi, who is a first-timer, what the doors are about.
The catch is, if they die inside the door, in the real world, they’ll die immediately, by accident, throwing themselves off a building, or just throwing up blood until they die (just to name a few)
On the first night, however, three people are slaughtered and eaten by a long-haired ghost/creature. The good news is, Ruan Baijie isn’t all that she seems to be (for one, she’s not exactly a woman) and she takes a liking to Lin Qiushi immediately.
Other CPs: None XD
Status: Complete!
Translations: I think it’s not complete yet!
Drama/Live-Action: None that I know of, but honestly, this novel would be fricking EPIC as a live-action, and really creepy, but this is my all-time favourite novel, I kid you not!!!!
*I’m definitely doing a longer and more detailed to-read for KOD on my translation account, gosh you guys have no idea how much I love this.
7. 当年万里觅封侯 | Those Years in Quest of Honor Mine by 漫漫何其多
Summary: Yu She and Gu Wan were close friends for a short period of time when they were younger, but unfortunately their identities and positions meant that they were opponents. Yu She’s family was for the Second Prince and Gu Wan was taken in by the Sixth Prince’s family, but in the end it was the Second Prince who ended up getting to the throne, while the Sixth Prince was accused of treason and died somewhere far away at war after being captured. Gu Wan’s only wish was to keep the Fifth Prince’s children - Xuan Rui and a pair of twins, Xuan Yu and Xuan Congxin safe, and so he moves them to another province and asks the Emperor (the Second Prince) to demote Xuan Rui’s status to prove that they are no threat to the Emperor, if only to stay alive for another day.
However, their days of hardship have only just begun, and Gu Wan decides to namedrop Yu She, whose family is so powerful now, and claims that Yu She loves him and that he was wooing Gu Wan back in the days they knew each other so that officials and others would treat the children under his care better. A few years pass and Yu She doesn’t expose Gu Wan. Gu Wan thinks they can go on like this forever, until the Emperor asks Xuan Rui and the twins to head back to the palace for a visit.
Gu Wan meets Yu She again, but the boy he knew, who was gentle, a stickler for rules and a proper, well-mannered person, has changed almost completely. Cue palace conspiracies again, brothers fighting for the throne, scheming consorts etc. XD
Other CPs: None XD
Status: Complete!
Translations: I think it’s not complete yet but I’m not super sure on this
Drama/Live-Action: None that I know of!
*They came out with a new reprint edition three days ago and it’s gorgeous! And comes with amazing freebies, and I am a sucker and read it on the day of the printed novel release because I saw the art and loved it, wanted to see if the story was any good, and damn after chapter 2 I WAS GONE and then I checked out two copies from different stores for the two different sets of freebies
--
A list of those I haven’t read but I see are highly raved about:
1. 二哈和他的白猫师尊 | The Husky & His White Cat Shizun by Meatbun
- I’ve already been spoiled and I know what goes on mostly, and there are a lot of warnings for a reason, but I’m still a fan, and let’s not get into the debate on the content, I know I have to read this but the angst level is apparently ridiculous, so I need like some mental preparation before I sit down for it.
2. 千秋 | A Thousand Autumns by 梦溪石
3. 烈火浇愁 | Lie Huo Jiao Chou by Priest
4. 将进酒 | Qiang Jing Jiu by 唐酒卿
- A really good group of translators picked this up initially on Twitter, but then assholes were complaining that they were being too slow and insisting that machine translation (MTL) did an equally good and faster job, so the OG dropped it, and then another nice team picked it up, but MTL team is still being an asshole XD I’ve heard really good things about this one, it’s apparently quite complex as well, I’d liken it to Shapolang level? But it might be even more complex (with a lot of politics and stuff), so much so that apparently the printed novel comes with a relationship/character chart so readers are at any point in time clear on the characters which is like amazing XD

The Vessel [ Pt. 10 ]
Pairing: Geralt of Rivia x Fem! Reader
Summary: You go back to Cintra, back in your kingdom and back amongst the people that love you, and your two companions go back with you.
Warnings: Idek?
A/N- Although I decided to have Ciri in my story, Ciri actually does not have any powers in this one, and the reader does. For some reason, Pavetta's bloodline could not have the elder blood in it.
[My Masterlist] [My Witcher Masterlist - Read the other parts here!]

Calanthe had a tight lipped smile etched to her face; this celebration was making her feel claustrophobic and the crackling cords of the lute gave her a headache. On one side sat her husband, the King of Cintra, Eist Tuirseach of Skellige and on her other side sat her granddaughter, the blonde haired blue eyed beauty, Cirilla.
"Spare me the festivities, I can't wait to retire and sleep off all night," she muttered under her breath, her fake smile still plastered on her face, as she acknowledged the lords that bowed their heads in her direction in greeting.
"Calanthe, love, it's her anniversary, you can atleast pretend to have a good time," Eist smiled, his fingers curling around the goblet in front of him as he lifted it and brought it up to his lips, taking a sip.
"Would someone even bother asking me if I like it?" Cirilla scowled, rolling her eyes. If there was one thing she couldn't do, was pretend, unlike her grandmother and her husband, who could give a 1000 watt smile on even the gravest of days.
Eist scoffed, but was met by a glare from his wife, as she turned towards Ciri with a stern look on her face, but not one with hatred, "Ciri, when will you learn?"
"Oh stop it grandmother, not again."
Calanthe let out a deep shaky breath pummeling from deep within her lungs as she sat back, trying to get more comfortable when she spotted one of her soldiers speaking to Mousesack by the gate. She squinted her eyes, bringing her index to her chin as she leaned forward, letting her chin be supported by it. Mousesack's expressions screamed at her that the discussion was not a common one; something was up.
Mousesack craned his neck to his side, discreetly and looked at her, her eyebrow instinctively shooting upwards in inquisitiveness and he blinked, slowly striding towards him until he was leaning next to her and whispering something into the Queen's ears; Eist and Ciri watching them with their eyebrows raised.
Tumblr media
"We need to see Calanthe," Geralt said to one of the guards at the massive gates for the fifth time, and the guard asked him for the fifth time back what their purpose for visit was.
Geralt pursed his lips shut, and turned towards you. He looked at you in the eye, and you sighed. This wasn't working. There was no way on earth they were going to let you go in unless you told them what the truth was, but you couldn't risk it. What if they didn't believe you?
"Guards, back away. Let them in. The Queen wants to see the three of them." Mousesack's voice rang from behind them and they turned around immediately, moving out of the way until you came face to face with the a man with greying long hair, although way shorter than Geralt's. He had a pleasant, kind look to him but still, he had caution in his eyes.
"Follow me," He said, his voice not wavering a bit.
You turned towards Geralt who was stiff, and alert too, his eyes scanning the man in suspicion. When you didn't follow him, the man turned and his expressions softened, "I am Mousesack, Queen Calanthe's confidant. I mean you no harm."
"Geralt, I think we should?" You asked, and he blinked in approval, his lips clenched together.
The three of you entered the palace, slowly following the man in front of you. The hallways were elegant and beautifully lit, and a faint sound of a lute filled the hallway. You slowly turned towards Jaskier, and saw him in a daze just like you had expected him to be.
"Jaskier, I'm sorry about your lute," you sighed, and he looked away for a bit, in sadness, his hands held together in front of him.
"You know? Lovers may come and go, but she was forever loyal to me."
"I'm sure you'll find a new one," Geralt grumbled next to you and you gasped, elbowing him in his side.
"Geralt, can you please not?"
He grumbled something again, but you chose not to entertain the Witcher. Instead you linked your hand with Jaskier's, sliding it against his arm until you were holding it and walking, leaning against him.
"I don't think Yennefer will take my revenge on your lute."
Geralt snorted next to you, and Jaskier threw his arms in the air, dramatically and you giggled teasingly.
"I thought you were on my side, [Y/N]. But I see that your priorities have changed."
Jaskier wiggled his brows dramatically and flush crept on your cheeks, your insides flaring up once again. Your heart almost felt like it stopped, and you couldn't bring yourself to take a look at the brooding man walking next to you. Finally, you mustered enough courage to look at him, but when you did, you realized that he was actually grinning like a Cheshire cat.
"You too?" You growled at him and he stopped smiling.
"Jaskier isn't always wrong."
"Hey! I am NEVER wrong—"
"Geralt, I supported you. You're siding with him now?"
The three of you were talking at the exact same time and Mousesack abruptly stopped, turning towards you and all three of you stopped bickering, looking at him with embarassment on your faces.
"We all thought you were dead, Princess."
You looked at him in disbelief; he knew?
"My apologies, I didn't meant to startle you. I'm, uh, a druid. I know things, and I can feel powers. The minute you stepped into Cintra, I felt your presence," you blinked, "and Tissaia de Vries might have told me you would come?" He smiled at you.
"Does she know?" You asked, your voice coming out weaker— as though something was lodged to your throat.
He smiled, and nodded, "She does. She has been waiting to see you ever since the sorceress paid her a visit and told her you were alive."
As Mousesack stopped talking, you looked up to see that you were in a richly furnished chamber but it wasn't the chamber that surprised you, it was the woman that sat nervously by the edge of the king sized bed, her fingers nervously toying with each other. Another young girl stood in a corner, excitement glimmering in her eyes.
"Your Majesty, she is here," Mousesack announced.
Calanthe looked up, her eyes brimming with tears. She glanced at you from top to bottom as though she was trying to fit your memory into her mind. She blinked, ignoring how thick chunks of tears now flew from her eyes and she stood up, almost trembling like a leaf.
"Come here, sweet child?"
You didn't know what came over you. Maybe, it was the fact that you didn't ever experience the love of a mother. Or maybe, you were going to be a mother yourself, so you knew what a mother's role was. You ran towards her, and she almost choked on a smile as you ran into her arms, burying your face into her chest as her fingers began stroking your hair.
"I can't believe it's you, sweet child. I never thought..I'd get to hold you in my arms. Look at you. You're.. grown up," you pulled back, and her palm came to rest against your cheek, her thumb stroking it gently.
"What's your name? I never.. got to name you."
"It's [Y/N], mother."
Ciri awkwardly walked up to her grandmother's side, her fingers clenching the Queen's garment, her blue eyes looked at you.
You looked down at her and raised an eyebrow.
"Meet Ciri, [Y/N]. Your niece."
Tumblr media
You sat back, trying to get more comfortable in the utterly soft chair on the Queen's table; your back hurt like a bitch.
Calanthe nodded at one of the lords who took her hand and plastered a kiss against her knuckles and she gave a fake smile before turning to you and muttered, "The child giving you trouble?" Her words ended with a glare towards the Witcher and you bit your lip.
"I'm fine, mother."
"I can't believe you brought that wretched bastard with you, [Y/N]. Men like those, treating our bodies like we are nothing but a fucking commodity."
She took a sip of ale, her eyes not leaving Geralt who stood in the farther end of the hall, drinking ale from a pitcher himself. Jaskier had taken the lute from the bard, borrowed it actually, and was now entertaining the guests.
"Mother, he isn't.. I mean.. I know this all doesn't paint the right picture, but Geralt has been kind to me."
"Kind? You would call a man who used your body just for the sake of having a child? And look where it got you—" She hissed.
"Mother—"
"Calanthe, my love," Eist intervened, and you swallowed the lump forming inside your throat, your eyes fixed on the Witcher.
"Fine but he needs to leave. Before I ask him to leave myself," Calanthe growled.
Your heart sank at this, and to make this worse, Geralt was right there in front of your eyes and your heart aches to go talk to him but you didn't want to anger your mother, especially when you had met her for the first time in your life.
Tumblr media
You sat up in bed, drenched in your own sweat, your chest heaving up and down. You had seen the sorceress in your nightmare and she was smirking, holding your baby in her hands. What made it worse was the fact that Geralt was next to her, holding her by her waist, as he bent down to kiss the forehead of his child.
You swiped your palm over your face as reality sank back in and you realized that it was just a nightmare— you were in Cintra. You were safe.
You laid back down in bed, closing your eyes so you could fall back into a deep slumber yet again, only hoping that the sorceress wouldn't torture you in your dreams again.
For a few minutes, you kept tossing and turning in bed, your body churning in discomfort. You couldn't sleep.
You sat up once again, rubbing your belly, trying to comfort your unborn baby, until something struck your mind.
You decided to explore the palace, for this was your first time you had actually been to one, and ironically, this was your home. You slid into your robe, tying it securely around your blossoming waist as you stepped out of the chambers, holding just a candlestick to help you look around.
You wandered aimlessly through the palace confines for a few minutes, exploring.
It was only after fifteen minutes or so, you decided to check out the other tower. Only, you had no idea that the other tower was the guest tower where Geralt and Jaskier were staying the night.
Geralt frowned, squinting his eyes as he threw back his head, downing the contents of the pitcher in one go. He looked at Jaskier, who had a blonde woman curled against his lap, his fingers fondling her thigh. Shaking his head, the Witcher slammed the pitcher onto the table and pushed himself up.
He pushed his way through the overly drunk guests at the celebration, his only goal now to reach his own chambers for the night so he could get a peaceful sleep before the dawn came the next morning.
The hallways were quiet this side of the palace, and Geralt could practically hear the sound of his feet as he climbed the staircase towards his room.
Strangely, his eyes fell on you— you were sitting on the topmost staircase, staring at your hands, a look of exhaustion draped over your face.
"[Y/N].." Your name shot out of his lips like a prayer and he saw you look up, a look of relief reflecting in your eyes.
"Are you okay?"
The concern in his voice was like a sharp knife cutting through your heart, hurting just the right amount. You blinked, giving him the weakest of your smiles as you nodded and stood up. You were now on the top most step, and Geralt was on a step below you, so the man was just the same height as yours.
His eyes were golden, a fire lurking within his irises, his eyes although hollow and devoid of any emotion, for others, you could see a flicker in them, that made a warmth tingle inside of you somewhere.
"Couldn't sleep.. "
"Is it the baby?" He frowned, still looking at you, an inexplicable look on his face. It was only then that you felt something. When you lowered your eyes, you saw his palm pressed to your stomach.
It felt oddly intimate. It was just the two of you, in that hallway, and Geralt had his warm palm protectively draped over your belly— and as though the baby already knew who his father was, you felt a flip in your stomach.
"No, the baby is okay."
Relief filled him, and he gave you a flicker of a Ile before he placed his other hand on your arm and pushed you slightly towards the wall to step up the topmost stair, so he could tower over you.
"She haunts my dreams," you blurted out, although you didn't know why you said it and Geralt looked thoughtful for a bit.
"Mine too."
"In what way?"
Despite the crispness of the weather in Cintra, you could feel your blood running cold and your toes begin to tingle, not in a good way. You could feel the jealousy rise inside of you, and your nostrils flared.
"I see her as a monster."
"Not your lover?" You mumbled.
Geralt took a step closer, and you instinctively took a step backward, until your back was against the wall. The proximity between you two was almost that of a finger length, but you didn't mind.
He shook his head as he took a deep breath.
He smelled of ale and the forest— of nature.
"You're safe now. And so is our baby."
"Until when?"
It was all rainbows and sunshine, until thick black clouds fled up the sky, hiding the sun and it was all dark.
"I—" Geralt began speaking, but almost immediately, he fell quiet, and you blinked, waiting for him to speak but no words came out of his throat.
"What?" You asked.
"Do you regret this?"
The question pulled you off guard as you were least expecting it. Your eyes went from widened to confused, as you tilted you head slightly and placed your palm against your side, parallel to the wall and using it to support yourself.
Did you regret it?
"Which one? Having you use my body to find yourself a motive in life?" You asked, bitterly.
"Meeting me I mean."
"We didn't exactly meet in the best circumstances, Geralt," you chuckled nervously, bringing your palm to your front, your fingers hooking to his locket, as your fingers began toying with it, your eyes fixed on his, "the thing I remember, you fucked me on the Great Mount."
Geralt grunted under his breath, but he still leaned closer, letting his face dip, ever so slightly so that his lips were inclined to yours, aching to be pressed to them. He parted his lips, letting his tongue swipe over his bottom lip, as your fingers began trailing upwards, his locket now forgotten.
Geralt closed his eyes, the instant he felt your fingers run against his chest up to his neck, as you suddenly grabbed a fistful of his collar and pulled him closer, your noses now touching, and your chests heaving out of control.
"Tell me, Witcher, do Witchers dream?" You suddenly asked, your hand flying up to your head as you absentmindedly tucked a strand of your hair behind your ear.
Geralt's lips twitched, and his eyebrows creased slightly, as though he was thinking hard. Finally, his face moved slightly, just a light bob, signalling a nod.
"What do you dream of? What did you dream of most recently?"
He blinked, tilting his head, "I saw you. You were in the woods."
You were captivated by him; frozen on spot, and he didn't even touch you, or hold you. It was like there was an imaginary force binding him to you, drawing the two of you together.
"There was a woman long time back, I met her in Blaviken."
You bit your lip hard, a taste of metal flooding your tastebuds. Why was this making you jealous?
"I think I should go." You stepped away abruptly, and immediately took a step around, your hand flying to your heart, as you began fisting your fabric into a ball, your cheeks still heated up. Your steps were fast, and you didn't stop until you were at the end of the hallway when Geralt's voice rang out behind you, and you paused, just for a second but didn't turn around, only to let his words sink in. "Her name was Renfri. And she said something to me— The girl in the woods will be with you always. She is your destiny."
You gasped at the realization, his words slowly sinking into you, settling into everywhere in your body— your mind, your senses, your heart. You didn't look back, and instead you began running, towards the confines of your chambers, for you knew if you didn't, you wouldn't be able to stop yourself from falling into his arms.

P2 A Prisoner of Balconies
You guys and @gingerly-writing liked the soldier (from this) who was barely mentioned, right? Pretty sure you did, and you might still. 👀
******
The great hall shouldn’t have been so festive, shouldn’t have been adorned with newly designed banners and recently commissioned paintings. It made Arsyisa’s stomach twist, her throat close, palms sweat, hair fall out. Everything that could go wrong with her body simply was- all because of...well, it couldn’t be summed up so easily, could it be?
There was the fact that Arsy was sat- rather, placed, deliberately next to the general, Hytin. She was stuffed in a dress of his designated colour. Crowded in by dozens of betrayers. Warm in her dress, and overheated by the steam rising off her meal.
On top of that heaping mess, Arsy’s family was dead. Her mother, father, and two younger brothers. They were gone. Nothing could ever change that fact- and actually, the fact could only become worse as Hytin was replacing every tie to the royal family with himself. Well, every tie except for Arsy herself.
Why didn’t he kill her? Why didn’t he-
(Keep reading)
Oh, it didn’t matter. Not when Arsy’s...not when the soldier across from her was still alive. If Hytin ever decided he did want to kill Arsyisa- for whatever demented reason he came up with- the princess couldn’t keep her- the- soldier safe anymore. Was it possible the soldier was the only one who knew about the siege?
That only brought a hot bout of anger in Arsy’s body- her ears, hands, cheeks. Had the soldier known about General Hytin’s plan to kill the royal family? Was that why he’d been so persistent about beginning training?
The thought made Arsy sick. Because if he did know, he should have told her, should have warned her, prepared her- and not in the physical sense that he seemed fond of.
He must have understood the idea of mental stress, or else he wouldn’t have found a way to protect Arsyisa at all. He would have let her die even though he disagreed with Hytin’s pursuit of command. But, Arsy meant something to the soldier, and he knew he couldn’t handle the grief should the general decide to take her life.
So, why did he expect Arsy to be able to handle her entire family’s deaths?
This was torturous. Everything. Everything was falling apart, crumpling onto a teetering floor, which made keeping one’s thoughts together nearly impossible.
A fire landed on the princess’ thigh and she gave a light gasp before sending an apologetic look towards everyone near her at the table. It had only been General Hytin’s hand.
Only. As if it couldn’t be worse. She couldn’t get used to this...this life- not with the general of all people.
“You were asked a question, my dear.” Looking to Hytin now, Arsyisa noticed him glancing at the rest of the table, a wicked smirk pulling at the corners of his lips. This was a game to him, to the rest of the table. They were all playing with her, expecting responses only because it meant torturing her further. “I would answer for you, but I feel it is not my place to do so.”
I am a respectable man, she could almost hear him saying.
Arsy whispered, looking across the table at...at the soldier. “I apologize,” she said, and glanced at the others- at the betrayers, the misleaders. “I- I was distracted.” But they already knew that. Why were they making her say it?
Hand still warm on Arsy’s thigh, Hytin reiterated for whoever decided to worsen the princess’ misery, “How are you going to feel about moving into the..." The general's eyebrows jumped. "...former king and queen's chambers?"
"I have decided," Arsyisa nearly seethed, "to stay in my own and original quarters."
Fingers pushed into Arsy's leg. "Did you, now?" His voice didn't need to change to one of innocence. This whole table knew Hytin. They knew the general was manipulating her answers.
It wasn't the voice which worked, but again, the person across from Arsy. The soldier. “Change is difficult now, as you can imagine. I do not feel ready to move on quite yet,” She added, knowing what the general’s response would be if she didn’t, “but I will.”
Looking at the table, at all the new faces which she’d either never seen before, or only did briefly in days of her childhood, Arsyisa stood, chair scooting back with a loud screech. “I think- think I need a moment. Just outside the doors. I won’t stray far,” Arsy said. “I only need a...” She searched for a word which wouldn’t upset Hytin, wouldn’t make him retaliate in some way. “A break.” Not a reprieve.
Arsy couldn’t treat her interactions with Hytin like a punishment or else he would truly deliver them. He would take it out on the soldier, the soldier whose name Arsy was too frightened to speak, or even think, because doing either would further the attachment she had to him instead of to the general.
“I can follow,” the soldier across from the princess said, “as guard.” He began to stand, but Arsy shook her head.
“No, I can take someone else. You are here as a guest”- she glanced at Hytin briefly enough that she couldn’t even read his face- “so eat.” In truth, she would have preferred she take him, but...well, it couldn’t work like that. The general would never allow for the only non-conspirator in the room to-
“He may go. I cannot think of a better skilled man to defend the future queen should something happen.”
A flurry of emotions swirled in Arsy’s gut at Hytin’s words. Words like threat, mercy, control flitted at the back of her mind. Aloud, she almost asked the general, ‘Why?’ Because it didn’t make sense, not at all. Why would Hytin allow her time with someone- with someone she loved? And alone, at that.
But how could she argue? If that was how the general wished for it to be, then there was nothing to be said. Of course, she was the next queen of the kingdom, but...but that didn’t mean anything against an entire table’s worth of conspiracy and betrayal and murder.
And anyways, it couldn’t have been so terrible. This might have been the only moment Arsy would ever be given with the soldier. Maybe it truly was mercy that Hytin was offering- not some ploy to play with Arsyisa’s heart, thus tormenting her more than she was being already.
“Very well. I suppose I should make it quick or else your food will go cold.”
“I suppose we should.”
We. Arsy drew in a breath- one of both anticipation of a moment with him, and also in fear of the meaning of that word. Because Arsyisa couldn’t be ‘we’ with the soldier. That word was reserved for General Hytin.
Either way, Arsy began making her way towards the double doors which would lead her to the hall. As she made her way, and the soldier did on his end of the table, the princess watched Hytin, who only held up his glass and gave a mock smile. “Fresh breezes, my love.”
Her lip lifted discreetly as she turned back to the doors, steps meeting the soldier’s just in time. They linked elbows.
“I feel a little offended,” the soldier whispered, lips curled up- not in spite, but in tease, “that you tried to desert me back there.”
The muscles in Arsyisa’s arm tightened as the two approached the doors.
“Oh, how regrettably shameful I feel,” she returned, voice a touch lighter than it had been when she was sat at the table. Arsy didn’t notice the difference in her voice, but anyone else would have seen the girlish fascination in it now.
What the princess did notice...was the levitation she felt at being able to be so near her soldier again. That’s right. Her soldier. In this moment, this present moment, when her arm was wrapped around his, they could embrace one another. Not in a hug, not in a physical sense, but in theory. They belonged with one another in theory.
As the doors opened, the princess stole just one last glance at Hytin. Maybe, she thought, this can be the last time I ever see him. The likelihood of it was small, and she knew that if the general ever caught her trying to escape, then...then her soldier would be...would be hurt, at the very least. Arsy didn’t try thinking about the details of what could happen.
“I would have made you my king,” Arsyisa told as the doors shut behind them.
She listened to her soldier take a deep breath before pushing it out. It sounded like a heavy weight, and yet, there still seemed to be more. “You look beautiful.”
Arsyisa squinted. “You only say that when you have nothing else to say. I thought there would have been-” Arsy shook her head. “There is plenty more to say after...after all that has happened.”
‘You look beautiful.’ How dare he? How dare he volunteer to walk out with Arsy if he had nothing to say; no condolences, or- or apologies. Apologies.
“Did you know?”
Their steps paused as the soldier faced her. “Did I know what?”
Arsy’s voice turned stone-cold. She rose a brow as she pulled away from her soldier. “Medaris.”
His jaw ticked. Medaris swallowed. “I knew, and I”- he licked his lips- “your family was aware of it, as well. I told them...about...about the revolution.”
“You- what do you mean they-”
Medaris reached for her hands, trying to comfort her, trying to be there for her, but Arsy couldn’t handle the nearness right now. She shook her head, stepping back and away from her soldier- her soldier who knew about the attack. “You could have stopped it- could have gotten us out of here. What were you- why didn’t you help!”
Maybe she knew that Medaris couldn’t have stopped the entire attack, but if he knew it was happening, if he knew soldier upon soldier was going to barge into the palace, he could have told Arsy, could have- “You told my family? My mother and father?”
It didn’t matter that they were just outside the dining room’s doors, that there was a high possibility they were heard. Arsy needed to know.
“As soon as I heard about it, I brought it to their attentions. Came back with evidence as I found it.”
“But then why...they let themselves be killed, Daris. They let”- she blinked- “they let my brothers be killed. Why? Why couldn’t we have just run?”
Taking a step towards her again, Medaris told the princess, hands held out to her, “I don’t have an answer from them, but I can give you a reasonable assumption.”
For some reason, Arsy found herself accepting her soldier’s offered hands. Perhaps even she knew she needed someone to be there for her. Hytin certainly would never be, not in this way, not seriously, and certainly not in such the caring way which Arsyisa required.
“You know the general.”
Arsy nodded.
“And you know he’ll stop at nothing to get what he wants.”
She nodded again.
“Your family was doomed from the moment Hytin realized he could gain greedy support.” Medaris squeezed his love’s hands gently, drawing a line over the back of her knuckles. “Hytin was intelligent enough to bring several men to the king’s quarters, and seeing as your mother was never trained, well...”
Medaris’ own trained voice wasn’t helping very much. Him holding Arsyisa’s hands was, sure, but the way he spoke so...so strategically only made Arsy’s perception of her own life teeter. It was as if she were reading a book of her own life.
“And my brothers were too young, too- too weak, even with training.” She swallowed and her head shook. “They asked you to train me, didn’t they? My parents?”
With a nod of the head, Medaris stopped his stroking thumb.
Too bad it wasn’t enough. Arsy recalled the moment General Hytin swatted the dagger right out of her hand after coming to her room and balcony just days ago.
“I wanted to train you to begin with; all in fun and game, but...” Medaris shrugged. “It seemed like I would be overstepping my boundaries as a measly soldier. I am no nobleman.”
“My mother likes you,” Arsy said, before realizing the error in her statement. “Liked you,” she corrected quietly. Her hands fell from Medaris’ as the reality set in even further. “We should go back. Before Hytin has me dragged back, you know?”
He nodded again, but still made no move towards the door. “Why do you- um- why do you think he wants to...to keep you?”
As the soldier between the two of them, Medaris should have known the answer himself, should have been able to dive deep into a fellow soldier’s mind and pick it apart. Maybe it was because he knew Arsyisa, and because he knew her, it was impossible to see her from another perspective.
See, Medaris never saw Arsy as a princess. To him, she was just a girl.
A pretty girl with her head held high. One excited to talk to the soldiers about where they came from and if training had been easy or hard for the day. One who wasn’t necessarily ‘one of the boys,’ but was willingly friends with them, making sure they were okay, and rough housing with them as best she could. Arsy was dainty by noble demand, but she broke away from it as much as she could.
“You cannot be a king without a queen,” Arsy explained. Truthfully, she didn’t have an answer to this question until Medaris asked, and it clicked. “Sure, he could command any girl to marry him, but it would have no impact, and it would hardly be believable. I am the princess, thankfully saved, and by the local general. With me, he has the excuse to be evil. With me, he can-”
With her, Hytin could manipulate the situation through her. He already made her announce to the nearby villages that...Arsy swallowed thinking about it.
True, Arsy could reject the orders Hytin gave her, but then...
Hytin forced her to have random citizens executed, only to cover up his own crimes. Executed, not just imprisoned. He had her announce their treatment- their torture.
If anyone would be the bad guy, it would be Arsyisa, but the public would accept it, because it was revenge, and because they believed the royal family deserved vengeance.
Without another word, Arsyisa wrapped her arms above Medaris’ waist, holding him close. “Promise me you will not do anything to get yourself harmed.”
Medaris squinted above the princess’ head. Was that why she’d been so cautious around everyone recently, sending him small glances, and apologizing to him when spacing out instead of the rest of the table? Had Hytin threatened to hurt him if Arsy didn’t do as he demanded?
“Why?”
“What do you mean ‘Why?’” Arsyisa scoffed against her soldier lover. “I just want to know that you will be safe, that I will not have to worry about losing someone else that I love.”
“Okay,” Medaris promised. “I won’t allow stupidity to take over my senses.” She began to pull away, but he kept her close. “I want you to promise the same.” Medaris knew his princess wasn’t one for such brutality which she was displaying to the villages. As heartbroken as she was, she wasn’t a killer- even if it were for punishment and revenge.
“We need to go. Hytin will suspect something.”
“Promise me, Arsyisa. Do not allow yourself this change.”
She shook her head. “Medaris,” she whispered brokenly, “I am doing what I must; that is all.”
“You are allowing for your image to change.”
“So what if I am!”
When she pulled away this time, Medaris let her step back. He still wanted her promise, but- well, it seemed as though it was going to be more complicated than saying, ‘I promise.’
“I am doing whatever I need in order to maintain safety.”
“For who?” Medaris questioned. “Because it is certainly not for the villages. That much is evident.” He watched her, her facial features and how they shifted to reveal panic and worry. He wanted to hold her again, make her feel at ease with herself.
“For you,” she admitted, a little coldly. “I am doing this for you, and you are going to let me- because if you do not, I will hate you.” It was the worse threat she could think of. “I will hate you for as long as I live and you do not. He will kill you, Daris. He will if I fail him.”
“Let him try.”
Something glinted on Arsy’s cheek. A tear. “You promised,” she quaked after a silent moment. “You already promised me.”
“Then hate me, Arsyisa- because I will not allow you to live by this fear. I will kill the bastard if it is the only way you, or any of us, will be free of him, you hear me? I will shred him to pieces.”

"Eros, my darling son.......come here for a minute."
The golden haired goddess gently stroke the dove that was nestled in her embrace, her eyes fixated on the ray of light that shone through the crystal windows of her palace.
She heard the footsteps of her beloved child stop right in front of her. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw him bend down in obeisance to her, his arm rested across his chest.
"Yes mother?" The snowy white haired deity awaited her instructions.
"I've been rather uneasy lately my love. Very uneasy." She waved her hand and he slowly rose up, eyes meeting hers.
"Why is that?"
The Olympian got up from her seat, sending the little dove flying away to perch itself on one of the trees that decorated the room. Gracefully, she paced around the room, her hands folded in front of her abdomen, fingers tapping against each other as she mused about the current situation.
"There's been....some unsettling rumors being spread in the mortal world and it has reached Olympus..."
Eros waited for her to continue. It must have been something very grievous for her to be so out of sorts, and this was the same goddess who didn't fear the consequences when her long life affair with his father, Ares, was discovered.
She peered down the window, sneering at the city below that was barely visible with all the clouds covering a vast majority of it.
"Apparently one of the daughter's of the King of Athens is said to be remarkably beautiful....."
She paused as she took a deep breath, jaw clenching as she sputtered out the next words.
"So enchanting that they dare compare her to me....Aphrodite, the goddess of beauty itself....
They've even begun to bring gifts and worship her on the day they're supposed to pay respect and praise to me!"
Eros flinched slightly when she hastily turned around and marched past him, tipping over a table that held a tray with a golden tea set. But he didn't stop her, so used to his mother's infantile tantrums, although he was pretty shocked to hear the severity of the issue. To worship a mere mortal, one who was so far below one of the gods, and not just any god, but one of the 12 Olympians themselves, was inconceivable.
Aphrodite clenched and unclenched her fist, trying to control her fury threatening to seek vengeance.
"I need you to go down there and find out who she is. And when you find her.....shoot her." She commanded him.
Eros nodded, understanding what she was asking of him.
"Who would you like me to have her fall for?"
Aphrodite groaned in annoyance.
"Oh! I don't know! Anyone or anything! An old haggard beggar, a toad, have her go mad over a tree stump for all I care! Just make her go insane!" She threw a cluster of grapes across the room, scaring the flock of doves who flew away to different parts of the room.
"As you wish my goddess."
Eros bowed to his mother one last time before retreating out of the hall, and going to his own chambers to prepare his necessary equipment for the journey. He too was curious to find out just how captivating this woman really was.

The young girl sighed softly as she looked at all the smoke coming out from the temple, the light scent of incense could be made out from her bedroom window. She was well aware and against what was going on in there. It was utterly disrespectful of her father to allow them and even encourage his citizens to offer sacrifices to her in Aphrodite's sacred temple, and on her very own yearly celebration. Had they no fear of a wrath from the gods?
She simply looked away and went to her own little corner where she made a small shrine dedicated to the goddess of beauty, love and fertility. She admired the small marble figurine of the goddess herself, and straightened out the roses and pearls surrounding it. She lit fire to a few myrtles and let them burn in a small ash tray as she murmured one of the many hymns in devotion to the deity. If she wasn't so soft hearted, she would have finished it off with sacrificing one of the best doves that were kept in the stables, but she could never bring herself to do that. She hoped the goddess would understand and forgive her, or at least, try to appease her for all the foolishness her father was causing.
She straightened her nightgown and crawled under the blankets of her grand bed. She was exhausted from the day's festivities and from the guilt and fear eating her alive. She shut her eyes, secretly hoping it was nothing but a bad dream and when she awoke, everything would be fine and back to the ways it was meant to be. She soon was fast asleep, only movements coming out of her body were the rising of her chest, signaling her breathing.
A soft thud landed on her balcony. The being looked behind him, making sure nobody had seen him. Not that it mattered, even if they did, they would tremble away in fear. Pushing the window open, he let himself inside the girl's bedroom, the one they reverenced as Psyche. His eyes scanned the room, landing on the bed which he cautiously approached. His hand reached out to pull away at the drapes covering the sleeping figure.
"Let's see who is it that is said to rival Aphrodite."
Eros pulled the drape away, letting the moonlight behind him shine on the face of the occupant on the bed. His arm fell to his side, slapping slightly against his thigh as he took in the beautiful countenance of the woman sleeping peacefully in front of him. He blinked slowly, trying to decipher if what he was seeing was indeed real. She was absolutely breathtaking, almost ethereal, never had his sight been blessed by such radiant and magnificent beauty, and he'd spent some time around Poseidon's Nereids.
Without realizing it, his hand reached out to caress her face or simply push back a lock of her hair, he himself didn't know what he was doing. But a small shifting of position on her part made him retract his hand, elbow grazing on the leather of the pouch on his back.
That's right. He still had a mission to carry out.
His arm reached back and grabbed an arrow from the pouch. He then proceeded to hover his hand above the tip, humming the soft incantation that would allow him to pierce the girl's heart and render her insane for the first object she saw. As he chanted, she began to stir in her sleep, putting Eros on guard, hoping she wouldn't wake up. He took in how her once peaceful expression, showed now sorrow and pain. It somehow pained him to see such a beautiful girl seem so troubled. He was so lost in her gaze that he didn't realise it until it was too late...
Until he felt the sharp tip of the arrow prick into his palm, even piercing the skin. Eros widened his eyes as he quickly yanked the arrow out, flinging it across the room. He looked at his hand, no blood coming out because he was an immortal, but he still clutched it as he felt an overwhelming pain and flutter course through his entire body. His heart started to pump at a faster pace, and his breathing became heavier. He tried to look away, but his mind forced him to look back at the unsuspecting girl on the bed.
"Oh no......what have I done?" He whispered softly.
Feeling dizzy, he scurried out the window, not caring anymore about being seeing in the dark of night, he just knew he wanted to back in Olympus as soon as possible. He flew back into the heavens, discarding only a few white feathers on his desperate flight back.

Psyche stood in front of the mirror, trying not to gaze at her own reflection, which she thought of as more of a curse than a blessing. She simply let her maids comb and adorn her hair as they wished and wrap a golden belt around her lilac colored tunic.
"My lady would you like breakfast brought to you or would you prefer to go down to the dining room?" One of them inquired.
She shook her head.
"I won't be taking breakfast today thank you."
The maids exchanged a puzzled look between each other but decided not to pry any longer. They simple allowed their mistress to wander off to the castle's pavilion located in the center of the gardens.
She preferred being alone these days, avoiding as many people as possible, but especially her father. Lately he had been rambling and complaining non stop at the lack of suitors coming to propose marriage to her. It'd been almost a year since he put out the announcement that she was of age and ready to be betrothed to any suitable prince or monarch, he had even raised the dowry triple what it was originally worth, but still, no one had come to claim her or propose.
"Perhaps it's just as well." She thought to herself. It wouldn't surprise her if this was how Aphrodite was showing her anger, by making her face the humiliation of being unwedded and childless.
Perhaps the biggest thing bothering her was the fact men just came to admire her beauty, but seemed to never really fall in love with her, and she herself couldn't fall in love either. Was she just a pretty face for people to gawk and fawn over? Was she destined to feel lonely and empty for the rest of her life?
"Little Psyche out here all alone?"
She stiffened when she heard the voice of her eldest sister, Amara, from behind her. Small steps let her know she was entering the pavilion and soon enough, she felt her presence stand right next to her.
"I wanted to be alone. That's all." She explained, although she really didn't feel the need to.
Her sister hummed softly.
"Would one really think that to be such a good idea? Father would be concerned if anything happened to his precious and beautiful Psyche, especially after that incident of the arrow in your room."
She was getting irritated at this point, her hand gripping harshly at the side of her tunic, creasing it slightly.
"That was many months ago Amara.....and I've said before that I don't like the title given to me by my father and the people....."
She took a deep breath before stating firmly:
"My name is Y/N and I shall be referred as such."
Her sister was taken aback by her sharp tone, but paid no attention to it. She opted for plucking some of the little violets that surrounded one of the pillars.
"As you wish....after all, anything you say is practically law. Anything you desire, you'll get." Her voice was laced with envy.
Y/N shook her head.
"Not everything."
Although she was referring to the fact her father refused to listen to her in the matter of Aphrodite's temple, her sister wrongly thought she meant the matter of matrimony.
"Oh don't worry little sister. Father is to go visit the Oracle of Delphi to seek help from Apollo in regards to your.......shameful circumstances."
Y/N couldn't stand it anymore. It's not that she hated her sister, but lately she seemed to enjoy in taking delight of her misery and pain, hurting her with her mock pity and double sided remarks.
"If you'll excuse me Amara, I shall go back inside."
Y/N was barely 4 feet away when her sister dismissed her.
"See you later......Psyche."
Y/N refused to eat during the entire day, worrying her loyal and trustworthy maids.
"But Miss....you must eat at least a little. Whatever shall you do if your beauty fades away?"
'Then I shall be content.'
She only thought those words but didn't say them out loud. She felt bad about her maids attending to her with such tenderness that she forced herself to at least eat some of the grapes in front of her. It seemed to put her maids more at ease and Y/N was happy about it.
"Anything in particular you wish for us to do Miss?"
There was one thing she really wanted. Something everyone around her never seemed to do anymore.
"Could you......could you please call me Y/N?"
The two women looked back and forth at each other, unsure of whether to refer to the princess in such an informal way.
"Please?"
Y/N was just craving to be reminded of who she truly was, be assured about her existence and her true person. Both women smiled fondly at her before curtsying to her.
"Lady Y/N."
She felt her heart full with warmth and felt happier in that moment than she had felt in the last 8 months that had gone by. But that happiness was short lived when her door swung open, her other sister, Melia rushing in, looking out of sorts and with fear in her eyes.
"Melia? What's wrong?"
Y/N stood up, but it was her sister who clutched onto her and sobbed on her neck.
"Oh poor Psyche! Why must this have happened to you? To my dear little sister?"
Y/N didn't know what to make of this, but it must be something dreadful if her usually composed and quiet sibling was hysteric. She pulled her back to take in her countenance.
"Tell me. What is it?" Y/N pleaded.
Melia pursed her lips before recounting what she heard and witnessed.
"Father came back from meeting with Apollo's Oracle......and Psyche, it's dreadful!"
Y/N gulped slightly. Although she was expecting the answer to not be a favorable one, she was not expecting this outburst.
"Tell me Mel.......am I not to get married ever?"
Y/N braced herself for the negative response.
Melia shook her head though.
"No Psyche.....it's much much worse than that."
Y/N felt her heart drop at that. What could there possibly be that was worse than not getting married?
"The Oracle told father that your husband has already been chosen for you. He gave us instructions that we are to deliver you to the top of Mount Lycabettus, dressed in black and to leave you there...."
She sniffled and held her handkerchief to her mouth.
"Will my husband meet us there?" She questioned.
Melia shook her head no.
"Well- then how can we be married?" She was beyond puzzled at this point.
"We don't know Psyche, the Oracle only said to deliver you. One thing is sure Psyche. Your husband is not mortal."
Y/N would have rejoiced at the information would it not have been for the terror in her sister's eyes.
"Melia tell me.....who exactly is my husband?"
Melia seemed troubled to reveal more information to her, but she knew she had to say it.
"We don't know. He refused to tell father. All he mentioned was that he flies through the skies and even the gods are terrified of him.....
"Psyche....I fear you're destined to marry a monster..."
━━━━━━━༺۵༻━━━━━━━
The girl watched as her parents, sisters and their husbands disappeared from sight, not even leaving behind their footprints to keep her company. Crouching down, she settled herself onto the ground, her arms wrapping around to hug her knees. She sighed in despair as she thought about what was going to happen to her now. Was her new husband really a monster? It seemed to be the only logical explanation if even gods were afraid of him. The only thing she could think of was....
A titan?
'No it can't be.'
She quickly discarded that thought. All of the titans were locked away in Tartarus. And the world would have definitely known if a titan had gotten out.
She anxiously waited for a sign, a movement of some kind, but nothing ever came. All she had to accompany her besides her solitude was the light breeze that blew some of her hair in front of her face. She shivered slightly, her arms crossing over her chest as she rubbed them with her hands. She faintly noticed that the wind seemed to be getting a little more heavier, and it seemed as though fog started to appear around her. But Y/N couldn't really pay attention to it as she felt herself getting drowsy and tired. She struggled to keep her eyes open, but the feeling was overtaking her. Her eyes ended up closing as she fell back onto the moss underneath her, falling fast asleep without even knowing why.
While asleep, she felt a strange sensation of being lifted up and carried up into the sky, almost as if though she were flying.....but that was surely impossible? But it felt so real. She had a fantastical dream of flying above the peak of mountains, drift through the clouds in the sky and somehow even be close to the stars. She felt as if she were being carried in the arms of some strong entity. And at the end, she could faintly hear a voice assure her:
"Have no fear little one, for you are truly loved."
Awakening hours later, when it was even darker and more deep into the night than before, she sat up and looked around at her surroundings. The green moss from before was no longer accompanying her. Instead, she awoke to find herself placed on an ivory marble resting bench. Beautiful varieties of roses surrounded what she guessed to be a very beautiful and luxurious garden. Her hand reached out to caress one of them, its petals being one of the most soft things she'd ever felt.
Standing up, she followed the stone path that was right in front of her. A tiny river flowed through the garden, a slight trickling sound was the only noise that was heard. She stopped when a grand and extravagant mansion stood before her. It was 10 times more beautiful and seemed more expensive than the very castle she grew up in. Cautiously, she over to the front door, which seemed to be made out of pure gold, pearls adorning the edges of them.
Y/N was about to knock on it, but to her surprise, the doors opened by themselves. She slowly stepped inside, her eyes bulging out as her eyes took in the hall in front of her. Clean and neatly polished marble floor, crimson red silk drapes covering large and vast windows, the furniture looked unlike anything she had ever seen before. Her hand was gliding over the ottoman in the center of it when a voice called out:
"Welcome mistress! We have been expecting you!"
She whipped her head around, then looked at all directions, but found no one standing anywhere near her.
"Who...who are you?" Y/N fearfully looked at the ceiling then at every corner, wondering where the voice was.
"We're your servants mistress." A chorus of at least 5 women rang out, puzzling her even more.
"Where....are you?"
The invisible women giggled amongst themselves.
"We are right here next to you mistress. I'm afraid you just can't see us."
Y/N watched as a silver pitcher was lifted up in the air, pouring what seemed to be wine in a glass cup, which was then hovered right in front of her.
"Wine mistress?"
Y/N hesitantly took the cup, indeed feeling someone's weight let go of it. She took a small sip of the wine, its rich and crisp flavor enticing her to drink more of it.
"Would you care for any fruits?" A platter holding strawberries, grapes, cherries and blueberries were held up in front of her. They looked so fresh and ripe, Y/N couldn't help but reach for one of the grapes, her tastebuds becoming completely engaged at how delicious and juicy they were.
She no longer felt disturbed by the faceless voices talking to her, nor about the objects floating around, carrying articles that were being offered to her, and she did not get startled when she heard music filling the room, playing the most sweet and beautiful melody her ears were blessed to hear. She just let her invisible attendants feed her some exotic foods that she never even knew existed. She also didn't mind them guiding her to a lavatory, where there was a bathtub, the size of a large pond already waiting for her. She nearly slipped into another deep sleep when she stepped inside, the warm water relaxing her muscles while the scent of lavender calmed and eased her mind. After washing her body, her maids oiled and scented her body with vanilla and jasmine while they dried her. She saw as a periwinkle blue robe was extended towards her and Y/N slipped into it, her hands caressing the soft, velvet material, smoothing the folds on her waist and hips.
"Oh mistress! You look so beautiful!" One of them cheerfully exclaimed.
"You're the most beautiful creature we've been honored to serve." Another piped in.
"We're so happy to have you here with us. It shall be a lot more livelier now." She heard someone chuckle.
"I think our job for tonight is done. My lady, please step into the room behind the other door. The master will join you shortly."
Y/N was so filled with bliss and contentment, that she had completely forgotten why she was here in the first place. Recalling her sister words, she begged her maids not to leave her, but they apologized and retreated to who knows where, leaving her by herself once again. Her hand reached for the doorknob, turning it slowly before she stepped into the next room.
Y/N tried to move around in the space, but it was extremely difficult because the room was pitch black. She could barely make out the outlines of the chairs, the bed draped with curtains or the dressers. On the corner, she saw a single window, but the curtains were drawn, and even if it was open, the dark night would hardly help her see any better. Y/N out stretched her arms, grabbing onto the empty void around her to maneuver herself to the bed, where she settled down into, hugging her knees like she did back when her family left her on top of the mountain.
She rocked herself back and forth as many thoughts ran over her mind:
'When will he arrive? Will he be kind or not? What will he look like....
And who was he?'
Y/N rested her hands on her arms that were hugging her knees, her eyes closing, but she wasn't tired at all. She just wished time would speed up faster and someone could explain to her what was going on. She felt a light breeze suddenly pass through the room. Looking up, she saw that the curtains by the window had been moved, pushed slightly open, letting just the dimmest sliver of light pour in, but she still couldn't see anything.
She felt something .....someone else in the room with her. On edge, she quickly sat up from the bed and tried to make way back to the other room.
"You have nothing to fear my dearest Y/N."
She halted at the sound of her name. She was expecting to be called that odious title she was often referred to, but instead, she heard her very own name.
"How....how do you know my name?"
The deep, baritone voice spoke again.
"It wouldn't be fitting for a husband to not know his own wife's name, don't you think?"
Y/N eased slightly at his words but still felt nervous.
"Where...are you?" She took small steps, eyes squinting to see something, anything.
She felt a rush of warmth fill up her body when a gentle hand placed itself on her shoulder.
"I'm right here beside you, where I shall always be."
She didn't tremble at his touch, on the contrary, she relaxed and her fear was suddenly gone. Whoever the stranger was, he slowly turned her around to face him. She could make out a bit of his outline, but still couldn't define any of his features or details.
"Why aren't there any lamps? I can't see you."
Lifting her hand, he placed it on his cheek, his skin feeling as soft as a petal.
"See me with your touch my love."
Her hand delicately traced his features, trying to imagine what he looked like. He had a very sharp jawline, a well defined nose and delicately carved lips that tempted her to reach up and kiss them. She was still confused as to why she couldn't see him though. As if on cue, he spoke:
"I know it must be difficult for you to understand this Y/N. But please don't be afraid of me. I would never hurt you."
Y/N retracted her hand.
"My...my sister said you're a monster."
He chuckled heartedly, his voice full of music and splendor.
"Do I feel like a monster or sound like one?"
Y/N giggled softly, realizing it did seem silly.
"If you're not a monster though......why can't I see you?"
She could feel the man in front of her think about how to answer her. Sighing softly, he took her hand again, holding it with his two hands and running a thumb on the top of it.
"I'm afraid I can't give you the answer to that question yet...."
She felt her heart sink at his words. She lowered her head in disappointment. Not wanting to upset her more, he kissed the palm of her hand and swore:
"Just please trust me Y/N, and I'll promise to love you forever......can you trust me?"
Maybe she was mad or delusional, but in spite of all the mystery surrounding him, she sincerely felt the veracity of his promise and had no doubt in her mind about trusting him. She moved closer to him, accidentally stepping too far and colliding with his firm chest.
"Umph!" Y/N groaned slightly.
He giggled softly at her cute action. He saw as she tried to reach out again to feel him, but instead pulled her hand away.
"You can touch me love."
Her hands once again traced his smooth face, traveling down his neck before resting on his broad shoulders. Although he felt somewhat slim, his body seemed very toned and vigorous. Y/N wanted to drop her hands further but she felt to shy to do it. Once again, he read her mind.
"Y/N....it's ok. We're married." He drew out that last word, more to himself than to her.
Her hands pressed down across his chest. She could tell his tunic was made out of fine linen, even if she couldn't see it. His chest felt strong and sturdy, she bit her lip slightly as she pictured what it would look like in the light, without his garment.
She gasped when she felt him pull her against him, his breath against her lips, just wanting to close the space between them and kiss her. His finger traced the curve of her luscious and plump lips. Although she was content with everything he'd said so far, there was just one more question she had:
"I....... I don't know what to call you."
He raised an eyebrow at her.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean....you know my name....but you never told me yours." She pulled away slightly.
He realized she was right. She felt him smile at her as he brought her face close to his again.
"Please call me Yeosang." Her heart fluttered when she heard his name.
Yeosang brushed his lips against hers.
"Trust me my dear. I love you with all my heart."
Y/N melted at his words and before she knew it, she whispered back:
"I love you too....Yeosang."
As soon as she spoke out those words, Yeosang could no longer control himself as he enclosed his lips over hers in a passionate and loving kiss. Y/N blushed at being kissed for the first time in her life, but happily returned the gesture, surprised that she easily could. Even though she couldn't see him, she knew Yeosang was beautiful, ethereal and very kind...
And she was already falling in love with him.
━━━━━━━༺۵༻━━━━━━━
It had been roughly 4 months into their marriage and Y/N was extremely happy. He'd visit her in the dead of night everyday, as usual, in the pitch black so she couldn't see him, but she had grown accustomed to that. He'd usually leave before she was even awake and before the sun would even start coming out. He'd always leave a red rose by her dresser everyday, attached with a small note filled with terms of endearment and vows of love and adoration for her, always succeeding in making her blush.
Y/N was more than content. Now, whenever she looked in the mirror, she wouldn't turn away nor hate the face she saw. She came to love her appearance now, because there was light and love in it. She was in love, she was loved and there was no greater feeling than that.
During the day, she would either spend time outside in the garden or inside, her maids, or rather, their presence, always keeping her company. She loved listening to their stories about the world she was now a part of, finding them extremely fascinating. They were all so gentle and caring towards her, attending to her every needs and overall staying by her side so she wouldn't get lonely.
"Won't you tell us something about where you are from for once Mistress?"
Y/N was elated, happily telling them all about her home, her family, how she grew up and various other aspects of her life.
"You seem very close to your family Misstress." One of them observed.
"I am. I love them very much, and I have such fondness for my sisters...."
She stopped at the moment. It hit her how she hadn't heard from her family since she got there, nor did they have any idea of her whereabouts or her fate. Her heart suddenly felt sad as she began missing them terribly.
"Mistress is something wrong?"
Y/N quickly plastered a smile back on her face, not wanting them to be concerned at all. Instead suggesting they all play a game together so she wouldn't think about it. But it was futile. Her mind kept thinking back to her family. She missed them more and more. She hardly ate anything else for the rest of the day, instead opting to go to her room rather early, even though it'd be hours before Yeosang got there. She wept silently, her tears staining the pillow underneath her face. She tried to keep a positive and cheerful attitude when he did finally got there, but he could sense that something was troubling his beloved wife.
"What's bothering you my love?"
Y/N sighed softly.
"I miss my family...."
Yeosang tightened his embrace around her, his lips kissing her temple. Y/N nuzzled her face into the crook of his neck, drinking in his scent that always calmed and soothed her mind.
"They must be so worried about me. They probably don't even know if I'm alive or not." She continued to pour out her distress.
Yeosang was pensive for a moment, wondering what he could do to help his sweetheart.
"Would you like to write to them? I can have someone give it to them." He offered.
Although Y/N found it kind of him to offer it, more than anything, she wanted to see them.
"I was actually wondering......if maybe they could come see me?" She reluctantly asked.
She very well noticed how Yeosang tensed up. Even in the darkness, she had learned to read his body language and knew he was hesitating about what to respond.
"I......I'm not sure that's a good idea love..."
Yeosang's heart felt when he heard a disappointed sigh escape her lips. It hurt her to see her in such a state. All he wanted was to make her happy. So although there were going to be risks, he agreed.
"They can't meet me. But if you wish, I can have Zephyr bring them here just like he brought you."
Y/N became so happy at the thought of seeing them again. Cupping Yeosang's face, she kissed him fervently, her reaction making Yeosang chuckle.
"Does it really make you that happy?" He questioned as he caressed her face.
Y/N nodded happily.
"So I take it you won't need anything else tonight?"
Well....there was actually one more thing. Y/N bit her lip as she stared up at Yeosang with a sparkle in her eyes.
"Oh.....I see."
Y/N could hear the smugness in his voice, but she didn't care. Not when he lips made her melt, when his hands caressed and fondled her tenderly and especially not when he slid in and out of her in such a passionate and loving way, bringing her into such a euphoric state. Another thing she discovered about Yeosang: he was an amazing lover, she almost felt drunk in his love whenever his body became one with hers.
Yeosang let out a grunt when he spilled himself inside of her, enjoying the feeling of her walls tightening around him as she also reached her own high. Without pulling out, Yeosang bent down to kiss her again, his hand reaching down to press against her stomach.
"I can't wait until you become pregnant with my child. I bet you'll look even more lovely than what you already are."
Y/N felt her face flush at his words. Suddenly feeling confident, she teased him.
"How about we try again? Just in case."
Yeosang sucked in a breath, his hands gripping at her hips.
"I thought you'd never ask."
Y/N's hands clutched at the sheets underneath her, moans slipping out of her lips as Yeosang moved inside of her once again, this time at a more fast and rough pace than before.
━━━━━━━༺۵༻━━━━━━━
Y/N offered more pastries to her sisters. Melia excitedly accepted them, loving how rich and exquisite the foods at her little sister's place were. Amara however refused, her eyes still looking around at the place. She was very put off by how strange Y/N's circumstances were. The weird wind that transported them there, the invisible servants, the fact they could not meet her husband? It was extremely confusing. But most of all, she was insanely jealous of how Y/N was living. Her mansion was 10 times better than hers, the food was of better quality than what was served at her castle and everything was just so much more expensive.
"You seem to be...very happy here." Amara pointed out, her lips pursed tightly.
Y/N couldn't help but smile.
"I'm more than happy. I love it here. And I love my husband."
"Such a shame we couldn't meet him. Do you know when we will get the opportunity?" Melia asked.
"Oh...umm.....the thing is...you can't meet him..." Y/N fumbled with the sash across her dress.
Her two older sisters looked at her incredulously, then they looked at each other with a suspicious look.
"So is it true then? That he's a monster with scaly skin, serpent tongue and sharp teeth?" Melia looked frightened.
Y/N slammed her fist on the table, outraged that they'd dare think such things of Yeosang like that.
"He's not a monster! He's beautiful, absolutely handsome and the most kind being I have ever met!"
Her outburst made them even more curious.
"Then tell me Psyche, what does he look like?" Amara raised an eyebrow.
"It's Y/N! My name is Y/N. And.....I......I don't know! But I just know he's beautiful!"
Melia seemed puzzled.
"You don't know? What does that mean?"
Feeling cornered, Y/N had no choice but to tell them how her husband would only visit her at night, shrouded in darkness and whisper loving words in her ear. That only served to sprout out more questions from her siblings.
"How can you possibly be in love with him if you've never seen him?"
"I just am!" Y/N exclaimed.
"If he doesn't see you during the day, where does he go to?" Amara pressed on.
"I don't know." Y/N answered.
Not wanting to miss the chance to hurt her younger sister, Amara smirked wickedly at her.
"I bet I know where."
It took Y/N a few seconds to comprehend what her sister was implying, but when she did, it only served to further anger her.
" You're wrong. I know What you're thinking and you're wrong. Yeosang loves me!" She was fuming at this point.
Amara however rolled her eyes at her foolishness.
"All right. Let's say he really is as handsome as you say he is. Why must he be so stubborn about not letting you see him nor know where he goes off to?"
Y/ N crossed her arms.
"I don't know. He asked me to trust him and I do".
Melia now seemed concerned for her.
"Psyche... do you not realize that maybe ...... he could be seeing other women while he's away?"
Y/N now froze at what her sister said. Her brain kept telling her not to listen to them, that Yeosang was faithful to her and would never lie to her. But then she remembered how her own sister's husbands behaved and she couldn't help but think if perhaps Yeosang would do anything similar like them.
"No..... it can't be true...."
Amara suspiciously came up behind Y/N, placing a hand on her shoulder.
"If he really did love you.....why would he force you to live with such doubts?"
That was the final drop that made the glass tip over. Y/N had to find out who exactly it was that was sleeping with her every night.
━━━━━━━༺۵༻━━━━━━━
Y/N waited until Yeosang was fast asleep, his breathing calm and serene. Carefully, she peeled herself from his grasp and crept out of the bed and to one of the dressers. She silently took out a candle and match that she had secretly hid inside. Walking as cautiously as she could, she stood by the edge of the bed where Yeosang was. Taking a deep breath, she striked the match and lit up the candle, holding it up so she could finally see him for the very first time.
Her eyes grew wide as she stared into the most beautiful face she had ever seen. He was absolutely glorious. His hair was white like the snow in winter, skin fair like marble ivory, his jawline was chiseled to perfection with a nose that seemed to have been carved to perfection. And he layed there, sleeping soundly with absolutely no clue that she had just betrayed his trust.
"Oh no.....what have I done?"
Y/N was so horrified with herself that she unconsciously tumbled backwards, hitting herself on a piece of furniture. Suddenly Yeosang awoke, his eyes painted with agony once he realized what was happening.
"I.....I can explain!"
But Yeosang simply sat up without a word, already reaching for his tunic. He sighed as he stood up and walked towards the window.
"Please forgive me Yeosang! I beg you!"
Y/N dropped to her knees, tears pouring out her eyes. Yeosang pinched the bridge of his nose, head full of turbulent thoughts that he couldn't place in order.
"Please just say something!" She cried out, desperate to hear his voice.
"I knew it would be a bad idea to let you see your sisters. I knew they'd turn you against me and actually betray me...."
If they were still in the dark, Y/N would have still been able to recognize the hurt and pain in his words.
"I'm sorry Yeosang! I'm sorry for not trusting you! But I kept thinking about their words, they said you were probably visiting other-"
"You could have chosen to not listen to them! No one forced you to believe them! You chose to act on your own accord!".
It was the first time he had ever raised his voice at her, and it boomed all over the room, making her tremble in fear. Yeosang opened the window and stepped out into the balcony.
"No no! Please!"
Y/N ran after him, her hands wrapping around his neck in an attempt to keep him there. Gently, he pried her hands off him, looking somberly at her.
"My mother told me not to trust you. That you were a mortal woman and would never understand me or us, and break my trust. I could never believe that she was right....."
Y/N saw as tears filled on the brim of his eyes.
"But I was too madly in love to listen to her..... I guess I truly did get a taste of my own medicine."
Yeosang made way to leave again, but Y/N held onto him.
"Please don't leave me! I'll die without you! I love you Yeosang!"
Not able to contain his feelings anymore, Yeosang pushed her off him and turned sternly to her.
"Don't.....ever say such lies again...and don't address me so informally you lowly mortal. I am not your equal and I am no longer Yeosang to you..."
Y/N covered her mouth in terror and astonishment when ethereal and shiny wings sprouted from his back, making him look even more heavenly than he already was.
"I am Eros, son of Aphrodite and Ares, the god of love ......... and you......."
He sniffled as tears streamed down his face.
"I can't stay here knowing that I want to hold you..."
Without any other word, speedily flew out of there, disappearing from her sight. Y/N shouted for him, going mad at the thought that she had just lost the love of her life. She was so erratic that she didn't think twice before she flung herself down the balcony, not wanting to live without her love. Unfortunately for her, a large gust of wind stopped her fall, placing her gently on the ground, thwarting her plan.
"Let me die!" Y/N pounded the ground.
"I'm afraid I can't let you do that Psyche. Aside from being tasked to bring you here, Eros appointed me to make sure no harm should ever come to you."
Although it was supposed to be calming, Zephyr's voice only angered her.
"So I can't even die?!"
Zephyr sent a small breeze, the only physical way of comfort he could bring her since he was invisible.
"Psyche, we both know you don't actually want to die."
"Yes I do! My heart is broken. My love is gone and it's because of my foolishness. I have nothing else to live for!" She declared.
Zephyr sighed.
"My lady....all hope is not lost. I may perhaps.....know a way of helping you."
Y/N perked her ears at his words.
"But first, allow me to tell you a little story, one you don't know about but in which you were the main protagonist."
Y/N watched as a swirl of clouds formed above her, Zephyr trying to make his presence manifested as he began recounting a story:
"Now...it all began when the people began to worship you instead of Aphrodite. I know, we all do you tried to stop them. We weren't blind to it. But Aphrodite is a jealous goddess. She could not stand someone being compared to her. So she sent Eros to you with the task of making you fall in love with a toad or something similar."
Y/N didn't seem too surprised by that. She knew fully well who Eros was and why he was feared even among gods, because no one was immune to his arrows that made them fall in love.
"He came to you one night while you were sleeping. He was so distracted by your beauty that he ended up pricking himself with his own arrow."
Now it made sense to her what he meant when he said he had gotten a dose of his own medicine. She was shocked that this actually happened.
"Eros had fallen in love with you. Curious isn't it, that while you were the most admired woman in the country, no one proposed. Wanna know why? Because Eros stepped in every time, making any suitor fall in love with someone else so they wouldn't take you away from him."
Y/N remembered all those months where no one approached her. Now it all made sense.
"Poor Eros was also begging his mother to let him marry you. But of course, being as stubborn as she is, Aphrodite refused. It became such a quarrel between them that Eros refused to obey her anymore if she didn't agree. Of course, she couldn't have that, so she allowed him to marry you on one condition: your love had to be put to a test....which....I think you know what it was."
Y/N nodded. He asked her to trust him even if she couldn't see him, but she betrayed him.
"Aphrodite probably isn't surprised. She expected it all along. But Eros......he was so in love with you that he put all his faith and trust in your love. And now.....he's probably back home again, moaning and crying just like when he came back that night he met you."
Now the guilt began to eat her up.
"I don't deserve him. I never did. I deserve to die."
Zephyr sighed once again.
"Now now child. As I said. Not all hope is lost. Listen very carefully to me Psyche. Here's what you're going to do."
━━━━━━━༺۵༻━━━━━━━
Y/N waited for the goddess to arrive. Her fingers fidgeted nervously, playing with the belt on her tunic. She suddenly felt a gush of wind pass by her. Light started to emanate from the ground. Y/N stared in wonder as a powerful entity appeared before her, looking so radiant and angelic that Y/N froze in place before remembering who was standing in front of her. She fell to the ground in honor and respect for the goddess in front of her.
"My goddess Aphrodite. I am your humble servant who has offered sacrifices at your temple and-"
"Oh stop groveling like a little bitch and get up." The goddess sneered at her.
Y/N slowly got up. Aphrodite stepped closer to her, one of her slender fingers tilting her chin up as she closely scanned her rival's face. Bewilderment took over her features, a scoff coming out of her mouth.
"Impressive. Very extraordinary. ..."
She let go of her and backed away.
"Pity though that your eyes are still red and puffy from weeping like a child. It really does not suit you....nevertheless, even I acknowledge you're beautiful and pleasing...."
She crossed her arms.
"No wonder my son is so smitten with you."
Y/N glanced up at the mention of Yeosang.
"Tell me, how is Yeosang? How is my husband."
Aphrodite lifted a hand.
"First of all, you have no right to call him by his birth name. You shall only address him by his godly name you mortals know. And second, he isn't your husband anymore, not after you broke your end of the marriage."
Being reminded of her acts, Y/N once again felt remorseful and ashamed. But she was not about to give up.
"If there's anything I can do to mend things, I'm prepared to do it."
Aphrodite rolled her eyes.
"Yes yes I know very well you are willing to. Zephyr didn't bring you here just for giggles or a cup of tea. And either way, sooner or later Zeus and Hera would have been on my ass about intervening, not to mention that his father wouldn't leave me alone if he saw the state his son was in."
Y/N beamed with joy at the thought of being able to mend things with her love.
"Thank you oh most merciful goddess!" Y/N resisted the urge to throw her hands around the goddess and hug her.
Aphrodite, however, dismissed her thanks.
"Don't get so happy yet foolish girl. I haven't even told you what the tasks are yet."
Beckoning her to follow, Aphrodite lead her through a meadow and deep into a forest. There, she approached a tall laurel tree and pointed at something on the floor.
"Before your eyes, you see a pile of different types of grains. Your job is simple: separate them all and arrange them into piles."
Y/N's jaw dropped at the task.
"That's impossible! It's not simple!"
Aphrodite merely shrugged. "If you truly love Eros, you'll find a way."
She turned away and began walking back to where she came from, but not before telling her:
"Oh and Psyche? You have until sundown to finish."
Y/N knew the goddess was probably laughing by now, already gloating in her failure and inability to finish such a task. She slumped down on the ground and began picking at the grains. They all looked too similar, there was no way to tell them apart. Y/N flung the grains back in the pile.
"It's hopeless..."
She wasn't offered a second chance, she was merely being humiliated for the own amusement of Aphrodite. Y/N couldn't help but wonder if she deserved this....
Suddenly she felt something crawl up on her hand. Looking down, she saw a tiny ant perched on one of her fingers.
"Hello most beautiful mortal. Please don't cry. Let me assure you that this grain will be sorted before Aphrodite comes back."
If Y/N hadn't already seen so miracles and fantasy sightings since she arrived, she would have seriously thought she was insane for thinking an ant was actually talking to her. She watched as thousands of other ants crawled up and began carrying the grains out of the pile, effectively assorting them into neat and tidy piles.
"How are you..?"
The tiny ant let out a squeaky laugh. "This is our specialty my lady. We do this every year."
"But...why are you helping me?" She couldn't understand why they would help her.
"Don't fret about that right now. Leave this all to us and just worry about being reunited with your loved one."
Y/N was touched by their tremendous kindness, thanking them incessantly as they eagerly finished what seemed to not an impossible task for her. True to their word, before the sun set, it was already finished. 5 piles stood in front of her. The ants bid her farewell and good luck for any upcoming tests Aphrodite was going to put on her.
When the goddess came to inspect the work, her eyes nearly bulged out when she saw it was accomplished. Scoffing, she crossed her arms.
"I see you finished it....very well. Tomorrow I shall take you to do the second task. But trust me, you won't get very far."
The goddess was so sure Y/N would never be able to finish them, but she didn't count on the fact someone was pulling strings behind the scenes to make sure Y/N would be successful. When Y/N was tasked to collect the gold fleece from the magical sun rams, the mystery person asked the reeds growing on the riverbank near her, to tell Y/N to wait until the rams left the pasture to fall asleep in a meadow, then she'd be able to collect fleece that would usually get caught on the brambles where they often played or fought in. On her third task, she had to collect water from a pit that was guarded by a fearsome dragon. Y/N dared not approach the beast, but once again, the hidden figure sent an enormous eagle to help her by flying her down the pit while the dragon slept so she could fill up the bottle Aphrodite gave her. Y/N asked the eagle, like she did the reeds and ants, why were they helping her, but all of them remained silent, not answering her question. They only wished her luck and encouraged her to stay determined to win back her husband.
Aphrodite took the bottle in her hands, fury in her eyes as she flung it across the room in pure outrage.
"I don't know what kind of tricks you've pulled to accomplish these tasks so easily, but I will not stand for it any longer!"
Determined to make sure Y/N would never see her son no matter the cost, she declared her last mission:
"You must go into the Underworld and bring me Queen Persephone's beauty cream, the one she makes herself. I was going to go there myself....but you can do it for me."
Aphrodite's eyes did not hide her malice or her hatred towards the poor girl.
"But....no human can descend into the Underworld and return!" Y/N exclaimed.
"Then I guess you shall have to be the first."
━━━━━━━༺۵༻━━━━━━━
Y/N touched the ground softly as Zephyr dropped her down.
"Psyche listen to me very carefully. There is a way for mortals to go into the Underworld and return alive. But pay very close attention or you'll never see the light of day."
Out of thing air, Zephyr made 2 coins and a loaf of bread apart before her.
"The coins are for Charon. He's the boatman that will take you to the Underworld and will also bring you back. The bread is for Cerberus."
Y/N gulped at the mention of the dog that guarded the gates of the Underworld.
"You mean.....the one with 50 heads?"
Zephyr laughed.
"You humans sure do like to add charm to stories. No Psyche. Cerberus only has 3 heads. He won't do anything to you while going in, it's when you're getting out that'll be the problem. You see, he's not guarding souls from going in, he guards them from leaving."
Y/N nodded, drinking up all the information he was feeding to her.
"When you're leaving, give a piece to each of the heads, it'll put him to sleep long enough for you to get out of there as fast as you can."
"Got it."
Y/N began walking into the foggy mist, trembling slightly as she realized she was about to be in front of the gates of hell very soon.
"Another thing! Accept no food or drink and do not rest at all! Just go in, take the cream and get out. I'll be waiting here for you."
"Thank you Zephyr."
Y/N wandered through the dense and humid mist that blurred most of her vision. She spotted a light looming out of the water and headed towards it. She stopped when she reached the end of the dock and stood face to face with a dark cloaked figure. Its face was completely hidden by the hood, the only thing she could see were its hands that were holding a staff that was no doubt used to row out boat.
"Are you.....are you Charon?"
The cloaked figure simply nodded very slowly.
"Can you take me to see Queen Persephone?"
Charon did not respond either that time, instead he held his hand out. Y/N now could clearly see that his hand was only bone, absolutely no flesh or skin surrounding it. Although startled, she handed one of the coins to him, which he put into a small purse that he kept tied to his waist. He signalled for her to get in. Y/N had some difficulty getting into the boat, slamming down on it, her bum hardly hitting the wood floor. She was sure if Charon was able to, he'd probably be laughing at her. He waited until she was settled into the boat before he began rowing down the Styx river.
Y/N hugged her knees as her eyes scanned everything. So far only the splashing of water and the silent boatman kept her company. And then a foul and putrid stench filled her nostrils, making her want to gag. As she kept looking around, she noticed what seemed to be people standing by another dock, looking pitiful and some even crying.
"They're the souls of people whose families didn't pay the fee or didn't have a burial upon death." Charon spoke up for the first time, his voice sounded hollow and had somewhat of an echo in it.
She understood what he meant. All people usually put a coin under their deceased loved ones tongue as payment for a ride to the Underworld.
"Will they stay there forever?"
Charon let out a raspy breathe.
"They'll stay there for a hundred years before they're allowed to cross over. Our master is not that cruel as you mortals depict him."
Mention of his master sent Y/N into panic. She was about to meet the actual god of the Underworld and his wife. She shivered as she remembered all she was ever taught about him: her teachers often painted him as a cruel, evil and wrathful god that loved tormenting the souls that were sent to him. The only reason he had a wife was because he kidnapped her, only allowing her to spend time in Olympus for half of the year. Y/N feared seeing him.
"This is the end of your journey."
Y/N saw a colossal black door in front of her. She lifted her hand to knock on it, but wondered if it was even possible for them to hear her. She felt someone or something sneeze by her right side so she turned. First there was only a gigantic dog head that soon turned into three, Y/N almost fainted when it began approaching her. This had to be Cerberus. The hellhound merely scanned her, puzzled as to why an alive human would be there. But he went back to his job and used one of his heads to push open the door for her. Y/N was prepared to see a sea of tormented souls being stirred in fire or some other kind of torture, but instead, she walked in a long and regal corridor, much like the one back home in Athens. Everything was decorated in either black or a deep purple color. At the very end, she saw two thrones side by side, black and made out of hard iron and steel. 2 figures sat by them and when she reached close enough, she was face to face with the rulers of the Underworld.
As per custom, Y/N bowed to them, trembling in the process. The monarchs looked at each other in confusion.
"You are not dead nor dying, what business do you have here?" A male voice inquired.
Y/N swallowed harshly, trying to speak but fear made her paralyzed and unable for recall what she was there to do. Noticing how scared she was, the queen stood up and walked over to her. She gently lifted Y/N up, her hand cupping her chin to look at her. Y/N finally had a glimpse of the Underworld queen and she was mesmerized. She wasn't as beautiful as Aphrodite, but her beauty was so haunting and eerie, unlike anything she'd ever seen before. It made her very unique and therefore more interesting in her eyes. Y/N felt self conscious now. She hadn't properly cleaned up or slept ever since Aphrodite had her do all those tasks, so she probably looked like a mess in front of the beautiful queen.
Persephone merely smiled at her, a genuine and kind smile.
"You're Psyche aren't you?"
Her eyes widened at the mention of her name. The man behind her also became curious at him mention of it.
"How do you know who I am?" But Y/N soon wanted to slap herself for asking that. She was a goddess, of course she'd know.
The lady chuckled. "Not everyday one meets a face that rivals Aphrodite's. I've heard so much about you."
She turned back and Y/N assumed she was going to take her place on the throne, but instead, she shocked her when she opted to sit on her husbands lap, her arms wrapping around his neck. He visibly stiffened, and Y/N was surprised to see him......blush?
"So tell me. Has the mighty goddess of beauty sent you here for another task?"
Persephone looked back to see Y/N with a mouth wide open.
"We know all about your endeavors to win your husband back. News reaches here first before it reaches Olympus. Gives a little entertainment to us and our subjects you know."
She waved her hand and instantly a grey and cloudy figure appeared before her, offering her wine or food from a platter. She didn't want to seem rude, but she remembered what Zephyr said and thus refused any of it. Persephone chuckled softly.
"Very smart." Persephone observed. She above anyone knew what eating food from the Underworld would mean.
"So tell me Psyche. What has she sent you here for?"
Y/N began explaining how the goddess wanted some of her beauty cream. Persephone rolled her eyes, knowing all too well how vain Aphrodite was. Her fingers stroked through her husband's hair, puzzling Y/N more. If she was kidnapped and forced to marry him, how could she be so....in love with him? Persephone only took her attention away from her husband when another grey figure brought out a box to her. Thanking the servant, she held out the box to Y/N.
"Take this to Aphrodite and be reunited with your love."
Y/N thanked the merciful queen and walked back, now more happy at the thought of seeing Yeosang again. Persephone watched her with a motherly gaze, feeling somewhat nostalgic.
"You seem to be very interested in that human." Hades' voice broke her trance.
"She's an extraordinary girl if you ask me. And she's doing everything for love."
She smirked as she cupped her husband's face.
"Reminds me of a certain someone who also went to great lengths to win the person he loved the most."
The Underworld God cleared his throat.
"Love makes us do crazy things sometimes." He justified himself.
Persephone nodded and leaned in.
"I know. That's why am going to vouch for her when Zeus holds the meeting."
Hades looked puzzled. "What meeting?"
The queen let out a hearty laugh before kissing his lips.
"Married life has made you lose some of your sharpness my dear lord." She teased.
━━━━━━━༺۵༻━━━━━━━
Y/N successfully fed the bread to the demon hound and made it back across the Styx with Charon's help.
"Thank you Charon." She handed the other coin to him.
"First time anyone has thanked me to the work I do." Although he tried to be neutral about it, Charon's voice had a lighter and more grateful tone to it.
Y/N crossed the swamp again and came back to the meadow where Zephyr had left her. She called me to him, but he did not answer. Y/N sat on the grass and waited for him, growing tired in the process. It had been 4 very long and tiring days and she was beginning to feel the intensity of them. Her eyes began to flutter, trying to stay awake, but tiredness began to overtake her. Her gaze fell on the box she was holding. Feeling curious, she slowly opened the box to peer into its contents. A sudden burst of light shone right in front of her, the power being too much for her and instantly, she fell unconscious on the floor.
━━━━━━━༺۵༻━━━━━━━
Eros sighed softly to himself, the longing for his wife becoming too unbearable.
"Would you please stop that moaning? It's getting on my nerves." His mother said from the doorway.
"I miss her...." He covered his face with the pillow.
Aphrodite scoffed.
"Seriously this lovesick fool."
Eros ignored his mother, all his thoughts were about Y/N and the last time he saw her. He recalled the harsh words he said to her, regretting them so much, each letter feeling like a stab to his heart. Although it hurt him to have her distrust him, it hurt even more to be separated from her. He wanted her back in his arms, he wanted to kiss her, he was going even more insane than the first time when he pricked himself on his arrow.
Suddenly he heard a commotion coming from the living room, with the way a voice roared like thunder, he knew who had just came in. He got up, ready to intervene in case the two individuals in front of him started getting physical. Not noticing him, they just continued their screaming match.
"I've put up with so many of your antics, but this my dear goddess, is low even for you!"
The anger in his father's voice was unmistakable, but it was even more serious than all the other times he'd quarreled with his mother.
"Oh shut up Ares! I did what I had to do for our dear son."
Aphrodite twirled her hair on her finger, batting her eyelashes at her longtime lover, hoping to seduce him and get his mind off the subject, but this time it didn't.
"No, you did this because you're a selfish, conceited and cruel woman! Putting an innocent girl through so many hardships just for your own amusement! Don't you think Psyche and Eros have been through enough already?"
Now it was Eros' turn to make his presence known.
"What about my wife?"
Both of his parents turned to look at him, one in shock at being discovered and one in sad pity for him and his love. Ares crossed his arms.
"Well? Tell him Aphrodite. Tell him all about the tasks you made Psyche do these past days." He challenged her.
Eros looked at his mother, waiting for her to answer, but she kept her lips shut. Getting fed up, Ares spilled everything to him. Eros immediately got worried.
"Where is she now?"
Ares looked to the goddess in front of him as he did not know what the last task was. Gathering some of the rage he inherited from his father, Eros harshly grabbed his mother and shook her.
"Where is my wife?!"
Aphrodite pushed him off her.
"I sent her to the Hades and Persephone."
Eros wasted no time and grabbed his bow and arrow. The Underworld was dangerous even for a God and he knew he had to go get her before anything happened to her.
"Eros! Don't you dare go after her! She isn't your wife anymore!"
Turning back to his mother, he looked at her in defiance.
"She is my wife. She'll always be my wife. I love her.....and I'm going over to her now."
Spreading his wings, he flew as fast as he could to the swampy forest where she had been hours earlier. He asked the boatman if he had seen her, but Charon only said she had completed her voyage and was headed back home. He breathed a sigh of relief, at least she was alive. He flew back to his mansion, bursting the doors open, alarming the servants who were no longer invisible. He didn't spare a glance at them, he simply ran upstairs to his room. Slamming the door open, he saw as Zephyr, now in his physical form was hovering over an unconscious Psyche.
"No..."
Eros ran over to her side, taking her hand in his.
"The power inside the box her majesty gave her is too much for a mortal to bear. I've tried everything, but she still shows no sign of waking up. Her body has also been weak these past days due to exhaustion. ....and heartache." Zephyr said somberly.
Eros spilled tears when finding out all she had been through and how much suffering he had put her through.
"I'm so sorry my darling."
His arms encapsulated her in a tight embrace, almost crushing her from the intensity. Eros sobbed uncontrollably. Zephyr decided to retreat from the room, giving him the space he needed.
Brushing out some of her hair, he pressed his forehead against hers.
"Please don't leave me.." he whispered before pressing his lips against hers.
He heard as she started breathing slowly, pulling away to check on her. Y/N's eyes slowly opened, thinking she was dreaming when she saw her love's handsome face in front of her.
"Yeo- Yeosang?"
His heart started beating faster when he heard her call him by his name.
"Oh Y/N thank Zeus you're all right!"
Y/N held him tightly, not wanting to let go.
"Yeosang I'm so sorry! I should have listened to you but I was so stupid!"
He hushed her, his hands caressing her arms.
"It's ok. I've forgiven you my darling. I don't care anymore. All I want is for us to be together again."
Y/N hesitated.
"Will we be allowed to?"
Clearing his throat, they both turned their attention to Zephyr who came back.
"Even if Aphrodite won't like it, she'll have no choice but to allow you two to be together after a power greater than her allows it."
Yeosang and Y/N looked at him in confusion. Zephyr once again began explaining:
"I'm sure Y/N..." He smiled when he called her by her real name for the first time.
"You've been curious about why so many creatures helped you while you were performing the tasks for Aphrodite."
Y/N nodded, none of them had told her why they'd help her.
"They were all sent by none other than Zeus, who had been watching all this happen and agreed it was unfair of Aphrodite to put you through such hardships."
The couple couldn't believe their ears. The king of the gods himself intervened on their behalf.
"He looks favorably upon your marriage and has even called a meeting to determine if Y/N should be allowed to become an immortal herself."
Y/N's mouth dropped unable to comprehend his words, but Eros was delighted. He could finally be together with his wife for all eternity, not fearing that one day he'd lose her in death because she was human. He felt so grateful to Zeus.
"It shall be put to a vote and needless to say, your mother won't say yes."
Of course they expected that.
"But fear not. There's already many who are willing to vouch for you. Persephone and Hades for example, Ares, Apollo, Demeter and I'm willing to bet that Dionysus will show up drunk and will agree to anything."
They all let out a chuckle at that.
"I'll let you know what the results are. Zeus agreed it'd be better if you two weren't there. He wants a peaceful meeting without Aphrodite throwing a tantrum."
Leaving them alone, the two lovers stared at each other for a while, unable to believe how lucky they were. Y/N reached up to touch Yeosang.
"It's ok Y/N. I'm real and I promise I won't ever leave you again."
His hand cupped the side of her face, thumb drawing circles on her cheek.
"I love you and I promise to love you my heart......
For all eternity."

One Can Never Escape Destiny
Shan-Yu x Empress!Reader (Female)
Warnings: Murder scene (non-graphic)
Genre: Angst, Romance (one-sided)
Summary: After fulfilling his plan of taking over China Shan-Yu and his army have made it to the palace of Empress Y/L/N Y/N. However, one obstacle the warrior still fails to overcome is swaying the Empress herself, getting in her good graces. Unable to kill her, he is left to do all he can to have her spare him as much as a civil word.
Requested by Anon. Hi lovely! Thank you so much for such and amazing and so different request from what I’m used to. This is my first time writing for a Disney character, a villain even, so I hope to have fulfilled your expectations even with it being so late in posting. Please enjoy! Love, Vy ❤
She refuses to eat or see the light of day. She’s been hidden away in a single room of the palace ever since China fell. She attempted to fight and gave her all when her eyes met his poisonous ones and her sword’s blade collided with his. The fight was a difficult one, he had to admit. She would’ve won had she not had a heart of gold. Putting her right-hand man’s under the sharp dagger in his merciless hand left her no choice. She loved that man, he could see it in her eyes. And he wasn’t going to kill the pathetic excuse for a member of the Empress’ council, but seeing that look of devotion and adoration in her gaze when her eyes met with his drove him in a fit of absolute rage. He couldn’t restrain himself and let the blade slide across the man’s neck only after the Empress had surrendered.
“NOOO!“ She had shrieked in terror and sorrow, all her pain audible in her cry that echoed all throughout the palace, piercing the monstrous warrior’s ears. He couldn’t bare to see her so distraught, over another man on top of all, so her ordered his men to take her to one of the chambers and leave her to collect herself. She still had fight left in her though. She escaped from his men’s grasps and overpowered them both until a third one knocked her out cold with the handle of his dagger. A choice of action that landed him the second dead body to be thrown out of the palace that night.
He specifically instructed the man taking Y/N to her chamber to be gentle and caring with her and to leave the door unlocked, maybe even open a crack. He didn’t want her to feel trapped in her own home.
He sat by one of the windows all through the late dark hours of the night and even met the sunrise at dawn. He contemplated so many things, scolded himself even. He had become the ruler of China and yet he had never felt so low and defeated. He even let his mind wander to the option of killing the Empress for his own peace of mind but he knew he wouldn’t be able to the second he realized he wasn’t even able to picture himself doing it. The very though sickened him to his stomach and he was disgusted with himself to have ever allowed himself to think such a thought.
The main thing troubling him was the fact that he didn’t know where such admiration came from. He had never admired nor respected a woman before but he felt the need to bow before her instead of the other way around. He wanted to be her loyal servant, tending to her every need at the bat of her eyelashes. He could barely believe himself either way - killing her or adoring her, they were both thoughts bordering into insanity, he couldn’t tell which was worse. Of course he could, he just wanted to lie to himself. He knew he could never lay a hand on her.
Shan-Yu had fallen under the spell of the very Empress he was supposed to end in order to fulfill his evil plans.
He should want her dead while he’s prepared to kill whoever dares even wish her harm. Funny how destiny works. Or perhaps this is karma punishing him for his evil ways by putting one bump in the road right in front of him - one so easy to get rid of in theory, but he could never commit to it.
It has been four full days since that fateful night and he hasn’t heard nor seen her. He’s not willing to disturb her peace and earn himself an injury from the infuriated Empress but the hours of overthinking, contemplating and self-battling are weighing heavy on him. His men are beginning to notice, although they’d never say anything - they may be cruel, dumb fools but they respect their lives enough to not put them at a risk like that. Not even a risk, more like certain death. They all obeyed his orders of bringing the Empress food three times a day every day and they all witnessed the defeat and worry that washed over their leader’s face whenever they brought back the dishes untouched hours after they had delivered them.
So, after a lot of self-convincing and doubting, Shan-Yu has bitten the bullet - he is walking the halls to the Empress Y/L/N Y/N’s chamber. He makes it to her door sooner than he’d like, his confidence is not fully built. His composure could easily be shaken. His words are scrambled and even if he could form coherent sentences, he knows they die in his throat.
‘Pull yourself together, you pathetic mutt‘ He scolds himself for the hundredth time in the past hour. Easier said than done, though. She’s a woman of incredible strength, power and character. She was respected by every individual in China, not a single soul looked down upon her. They had already hated him, but now that he has allegedly put their dear Empress in misery, he’d be dead along with his army if they weren’t so strongly feared.
Shan-Yu brings himself to knock on the chamber doors, his voice a faint echo through the massive hallway when he calls out, “Empress, may I enter?”
No answer, as he expected. He is half expecting to not even be there, to have escaped. He knows her better than that though.
Cautiously pushing the door open, he’s met with a dark room only lit by the moonlight seeping in through a small rectangular window directly opposite the door. He sees her silhouette in the windowsill. She’s sitting facing away from him, looking out of the window at the rooftops underneath the clear, starry night sky. She doesn’t bother to turn her head to acknowledge his presence, also as expected.
A small detail he notices sends shivers down his spine - there are metal bars on her window. Why?
“I was a rebellious child. I knew my destiny before even understanding what it meant. All I knew was that I didn’t want it. I didn’t want to be Empress. I wanted to be one of those brave souls who were prepared to leave to a front knowing they might not return.“ Her voice rings through the cold, dark space, bouncing off the walls in a haunting manner, enchanting him. “My father knew I would be more than capable of running away so I was frequently spending plenty of time here, locked up. As I am now.“
She is still facing away from him but he still shakes his head as though she could see him. “You are not locked here, Empress Y/N. The door is always open. This palace is still yours.”
“That you are right about.“ Y/N’s head turns finally and his heart drops.
She is pale, eyebags weighing heavy under her tired eyes. Her hair is covering her face but her pale complexion is more than visible even from behind her locks. She looks like she has been crying, not that she’s a woman who cries often. A tear of hers has the same value as a bar of gold.
She continues. “Chu Bao, the man you killed in front of my very eyes, was the only man I’ve ever loved and the only person who saw me as more than my title. I’m not just an Empress! Everyone forgets that!“
He feels hurt by her remark, “Y/N, I know. I know better than anyone. I have overtaken all of China and yet you are my greatest prize...”
She cuts him off, her shaky hands pushing her hair to the side so she can look directly at him, her crystal eyes meeting his menacing yellow ones with such intensity he feels it almost like a physical presence. “I am no prize, you monster! I’m a person who destiny played wrong! I given a role I have never been happy with. But I had to play it to maintain the honor of my family and of China as a whole. It taught me a valuable lesson: No matter the tries, one can never escape destiny. So...” she trails off, her eyes losing their feisty glow as she turns back to the window, “I embraced it and became one with my land, this palace, my title. And I will stay one with them till my death. Now, leave! And don’t bring me food anymore. Don’t check on me. I want it all to end the way it started - in this palace, in this chamber. I want to go out with the last bit of dignity I have. If nothing, I will die without ever bowing to you. I may have surrendered, but consider this me prolonging the fight.” He hears her scoff, a humorless chuckle, “The moment I die will be the moment I win.”
Shan-Yu has never been a man to live to face defeat. He always defeats the defeat, stands up taller than ever whenever he’s been brought down. Now is different, however. His defeat is inevitable. It hasn’t even happened yet, but he knows the battle’s lost. His hands are tied. He would never disobey a wish of Y/N’s nor could he live with her slowly dying. He cannot keep her alive against her will, and he can’t end it all quickly for her either.
She has already won, but she’s not aware.
Empress Y/L/N Y/N has defeated the monstrous, villainous conqueror Shan-Yu twice in her life: once when she had him fall in love with her and again when she chose to put an end to her life, leaving him powerless.
All he can do now is accept his defeat and allow for Y/N to become nothing but a battle scar on his heart.

Only You ~ Rowaelin
A Rowaelin fanfic, set if Aelin’s parents had lived and she had met Rowan under normal circumstances, if Erawan and Maeve weren’t threats. Hope you enjoy!
Chapter Five ~ Chapter Seven
Chapter Six: Storms
She had been reading a smutty romance book in bed when Rowan had knocked at the door. It wasn’t late enough that it was strange someone was knocking at her door, but she had assumed it would be Lysandra or Aedion, so she had been surprised to see Rowan standing there.
She had observed him over the last week, during training, during dinners and lunches, during their morning chats, and she had come to the conclusion that he did not like to smile. It was such a small observation to remember, but in her week of knowing him she could recall only a handful of smiles; and now she thought about it… most of them had been aimed towards her.
“I know it’s late, but I was going to go for a walk, and I thought perhaps you would join me?”
She had to admit, the sound of being alone with Rowan was appealing. The more time she spent with him the more she found herself longing for the time she could spend with him again.
“A walk sounds lovely.” She slipped on the boots that had been thrown on the floor with a wave of her hand had snuffed the candles and fire out in her room.
They walked in comfortable silence as they made their way through the palace, thankfully bumping into no one. The night was cooler than it had been in a while, the moon hidden behind thin wispy clouds. They wound their way down the sprawling gardens, past the training ground and towards the forest edge. The path extended through the forest, lit with small faelights and as they headed towards the trees she couldn’t help but feel the butterflies that erupted in her stomach. Perhaps Rowan had sensed her sudden nervousness or he wanted to fill the silence. “Do you like it here? In Terrasen?”
She wasn’t sure anyone had asked her that before, but she didn’t hesitate in her answer. “I love it. I mean, of course I wish to see other places and experience new cultures… but Terrasen is my home, it always will be.” She glanced towards him. “What about you? Do you like Doranelle?” It felt like a loaded question. If they accepted the mating bond Rowan would have to move to Orynth, and if he loved Doranelle…
Rowan contemplated the question for a moment, his brows furrowing slightly. “I have been to many places in my life, seen every country on this continent. Doranelle is…” He thought for a moment longer. “Doranelle has never felt completely like home.”
She felt his sadness for a moment, before it disappeared. “Why do you stay there? I mean, if you are not bound to it… why not move somewhere new?”
“I had my reasons for staying I suppose. I had been a warrior for the old queen of Doranelle… and had been married.”
She flinched at his words. She had not expected to be affected by his past relationships… but married.
“She died a hundred years ago.” She saw the sadness that had flickered so quickly return. She did not know what possessed her to do it, but she grabbed his hand and squeezed. The touch was gentle but somehow her whole body was awake and she was basking in this glorious male before her. She could have sworn he shivered at her touch. Neither of them went to let go, and so they continued in silence for a few steps, their fingers entwined. The simple touch was electrifying and her magic hummed within her.
She finally said, “what happened to her?”
“She was murdered by a group of men who had strayed from their military base.” He tightened his grip on her hand. “I was not there, and she died because she did not know how to protect herself.”
It made sense then. Why he had been so pushy about her learning how to defend herself. “I’m sorry.”
“It was a long time ago.”
She shrugged. “Loss like that sticks with you. Aedion’s mother was like my own and when she died… I don’t think I’ve ever quite got over it.”
They settled into the comfortable silence again, slowly meandering through the forest path. The night was quiet, the humming of summer evenings had disappeared giving way to the stillness of autumn, even the creatures that roamed the forest floor had gone into hibernation, sheltering from the harsh Terrasen winter that was to come.
“I’d like to have a proper evening with you. Not training where everyone sits and watches, or morning tea where the maids gawk at us. I want to take you to dinner or to the theatre.” Rowan had stopped, turning to her, his hand still entwined with her own. “I don’t know how to do this properly.” He laughed.
“Dinner or the theatre sounds wonderful, Rowan.” She squeezed his hand and they gazed at each other. She had felt the bond there the past week. His presence was always lingering, even if they weren’t in the same room. And despite their distance, or rather, Aelin’s distance to Rowan, she still felt the pull of him. Training in the mornings had unintentionally become her favourite thing to do. When she was in meetings or entertaining other Whitethorns; she would always think of their mornings together. The way their magic seemed to dance together, how it seemed to play. Rowan had never mentioned their magic in that way. In fact, Rowan was not really a talker… She had realised that he just liked to observe. Whenever she caught herself staring, he would be staring right back— not always at her, but others. In one of his rare cases of openness he had explained you could learn a lot about a person by just watching them. She didn’t mind his quietness, in fact sometimes the silence was nice.
“What are you thinking about?” They had continued their stroll, hands still entwined.
She smiled sheepishly at him. “You.”
She felt their bond then, a real, tangible thing between them. Her initial reservations seemed to be miles away as she walked with Rowan.
“If it’s any consolation, I think of you as well.” He squeezed her hand. “You’re… not what I expected.”
She heard that a lot. “Better or worse?”
“Definitely better.” They stopped at a gate that led to the cobbled road into the city. “The only things I knew about you were that you were young, could have a bit of a temper and the heir to Terrasen’s throne.”
“I didn’t realise I had such a boring reputation.”
Rowan laughed. “You have plenty of time to change that.”
They remained in silence as they both gazed at the distant city lights.
“Are you disappointed it’s me?”
Rowan turned fully toward her. She hadn’t intended to ask; but he was over three hundred years old and she was barely twenty. Rowan had travelled the world and she had only left Terrasen a handful of times. It was hard to see how Rowan would see her as anything other than a girl.
“Is that what you think? That I’m disappointed?” He ran his free hand through his locks and shook his head. “When I lost Lyria I thought that was it. I was ready to spend the rest of my life alone, always mourning what I had lost that day.” He took a breath. “And then I saw you in that throne room and I had purpose again. I look at you Aelin and I feel alive. And I know you want to take things slow; and I will respect that. But it’s taking all of my strength not shout it to the world that you’re my mate. Every part of me wants to confirm the bond and be with you as I’m meant to be. Disappointed is the last thing I feel, I am elated that it is you. And I will wait for as long as you need, even when this world is a forgotten whisper of dust I will wait for you.”
Aelin did not know when she had begun to cry, but she felt the tears drip on her cheeks and she went still as Rowan gently brushed them away. His calloused hand so tender as he did. She leaned into his touch, revelling in the closeness.
“Aelin?”
“Hmm?”
“Can I kiss you?”
She looked up at him, his eyes hopeful. He was magnificent, Aelin thought she could look at him forever. She didn’t need to think about her answer. This male in front of her was her forever, and she would be a complete fool to let him go. To think she had been hesitant of him, of this.
“Please do.” She half cried half laughed.
Rowan laughed with her and leaned in closer, his hands coming to cradle her face. His touch so feather light it made her shiver. Her heart began to race, it was the calm before the storm. She could feel his breath on her lips, her eyes fluttered closed, and the world went still at that whisper of a kiss. The world went quiet, like the silence between lightening and thunder. They were so close, so close to that kiss she had not even realised she had dreamed of. She had never wanted something so much, the waiting was insanity.
“Aelin?”
The thunder came.
Sam stood on the other side of the gate.

Chapter 58: Purgatory Reunion (X)
Mrs?
This familiar address reminded Qi Leren of someone—Mrs Kathleen. One of the powerful figures in the Village of Dusk’s Slaughter Secret Society branch, Qi Leren had used the identity of "Red" to go undercover there, and had infiltrated the Slaughter Secret Society through her. She and her subordinate, Ashley, had left a deep impression on him, especially after he learned that they had escaped pursuit of the Trials Court.
The Nightmare World was so big, Qi Leren hadn't expected to meet her in the Underground Ant City.
Not good, Qi Leren thought. Mrs Kathleen must have a grudge against his "betrayal" and "utilization" in those days. Now she had sent someone to invite him fair and square. She wasn’t surprised that he had come here.
If she was not strong enough, she could pretend that she hadn’t seen him. That she had invited him meant she needed him for something.
Qi Leren has a guilty conscience and couldn't help thinking about a strategic retreat...
His hand was gently shook, and Qi Leren jolted. It suddenly occurred to him that this time he wasn’t alone.
He still had Ning Zhou!
When a man fights for too long, he thinks of solving any problems by himself, because when in danger, he can't pin his hopes on others. The only person he can rely on is himself.
This was a kind of maturity, but it was not a kind of helplessness. If someone can be a little prince and a little princess in a castle all their life, who would want to face the ups and downs of the outside world alone? After all, the wind was cold enough to bite at one’s skin, and the rain was violent enough to break through their armor.
Qi Leren raised his head and looked at Ning Zhou. Ning Zhou's eyes behind the mask also looked at him. It was a firm and indomitable look. He suddenly felt at ease. Maybe he would encounter difficulties and dangers, but as long as Ning Zhou was by his side, he would have endless courage.
Relieved, Qi Leren turned back and smiled at the manager who had invited them: "What are you waiting for? Lead the way."
  &&&
They went up the stairs through a hidden door in the underground casino. The decor on the second floor was no longer a decaying and old gambling house, but a clean and tidy reception room. The white marble floor was gleaming, but the sofa where someone should sit was empty.
The manager pulled open the curtain of the reception room. Behind the curtain, there was a translucent curtain of light that rippled like a water’s surface, making the figure behind the curtain blurred, but it was still faintly visible that it was a woman's appearance, which was the long-lost Mrs Kathleen.
"That group of desperate gamblers are all rotten to the core, aren't they?" The woman behind the scenes laughed and made no secret of her contempt for this group of gamblers.
"It's a perfect match for a fugitive with her head hidden," Qi Leren also laughed.
This was really mean. When Qi Leren switched to his "Red" persona, his speech was much more vicious than usual, and most of the time it can be called malicious provocation.
"...Long time no see, Mr. 'Red', you still have the same style, still so... sharp-toothed and clever-tongued."
"But you’ve become secretive." Qi Leren smiled mockingly, took Ning Zhou, and sat down on the sofa in an ostentatious manner. He looked at Mrs Kathleen behind the curtain with his fingers still writing in Ning Zhou’s palm behind his back: Barrier, with a question mark added.
He wanted to know whether Ning Zhou could break this barrier enchantment.
"Necessary caution can save people's lives at critical moments, such as when the Trials Court encircled the Slaughter Secret Society branch." Mrs Kathleen's tone was light, but she was careful, full of the malicious intent of wanting to kill someone quickly.
Ning Zhou's reply was simpler than Qi Leren's. He only drew a check mark in his hand.
The light touch made Qi Leren's hand shiver, and he almost lost control of his tone.
"So you hide yourself behind an 'absolutely safe' barrier, and then tell your poor men to prepare to catch both of us?" Qi Leren laid out her plan bluntly.
Mrs Kathleen chuckled and took a sip of black tea before slowly saying, "A safety barrier is very important. For example, this one in front of you is enough to stop all attacks below a half-field."
Mrs Kathleen was full of confidence in the security of this enchantment, and also full of confidence in beating these two people. It had only been a month or two since the Slaughter Secret Society’s Village of Dusk branch collapsed. At that time, she had witnessed "Red’s" strength and that of the exorcist who cooperated with him.
Absolutely less than half-field level, otherwise the Slaughter Secret Society branch would have been completely annihilated.
These days, Mrs Kathleen, who had been pampered for many years, was resentful. She used to live a secret but comfortable life in the Village of Dusk. Her subordinates flattered her, supported her, and pinned their hopes for survival on the seeds of slaughter she gave them, but all this was ruined by this person.
She had to flee with the only surviving subordinate, Ashley, to the strange Underground Ant City. If she hadn't happened to meet a past lover in the lower city, and the lover happened to have a certain degree of power, she would be in a worse situation now.
However, how could a cautious life be compared to the reckless life she had previously had? Ashley, her only subordinate, was still missing.
Mrs Kathleen frowned. She could sense her subordinate, and was sure that he was still alive. But another horrible and evil force had cut off her control over her subordinate. She could only vaguely feel that Ashley was still in the Underground Ant City, but she didn't know what had happened to him...
"I'm not interested in your enchantment. If you wanted to kill me you could have already tried, instead of hiding your head in a turtle shell. Tell me, what do you want with me?" Qi Leren asked lazily.
"What about you? What did you come here for?" Mrs Kathleen asked.
"I'm looking for someone." Qi Leren has no intention of hiding.
"Looking for a gambler? I don’t believe it." Mrs Kathleen chuckled. "I’m guessing you're looking for the Court’s missing informant, the guy who came here the other day to inquire about the gambler."
Sure enough! The Court’s informant who came to investigate the Illusionist’s disappearance fell into Mrs Kathleen’s hands.
"Oh, what about him?" Qi Leren asked.
"Don't worry, you can see him soon," Mrs Kathleen said softly, fiddling with the feather fan in her hand.
Qi Leren's heart sank. It was likely that the informant's situation wasn’t good. However, it was also possible that Mrs Kathleen was using him, the informant of the court, and she couldn’t kill him until she drained the information from him.
"But I'm curious, the Illusionist unexpectedly also came to the Underground Ant City, also came to the casino; what is he doing here? Are you still chasing me?" asked Mrs Kathleen.
Qi Leren narrowed his eyes. It seemed that the informant who came to find the gambler to verify the Illusionist’s whereabouts had confessed this matter, so Mrs. Kathleen was wary, and she had found a barrier enchantment from who knows where to protect her own safety. She also arranged manpower in the underground casino. As a result, there was no new information about why the Illusionist had gone missing after leaving for the Dragon Ant Queen’s palace. Instead, Ning Zhou and Qi Leren had just gotten tied up in Mrs Kathleen’s issues.
Alas, this was really a pitfall of miscommunication.
"Think of it as him going shopping," Qi Leren said lightly.
Mrs Kathleen choked a bit, then laughed angrily: "What about you, what are you doing in the Underground Ant City?"
Of course, Qi Leren couldn't speak about the facts, but he couldn’t casually say something that wouldn’t make sense...
Beside him, Ning Zhou suddenly moved. This move made Qi Leren's mind flash. He leaned over Ning Zhou's neck in confusion and smiled at Mrs. Kathleen behind the curtain: "We came for our honeymoon!"
Mrs Kathleen: "..."
Ning Zhou: "???"
Mrs. Kathleen, who felt teased and humiliated, finally couldn't sit still. She stood up from her chair and snapped, "Since you don't want to say anything, go to hell and say it!"
With her furious voice, the door of the sitting room was violently kicked open, and a group of thugs rushed in, most of whom were strong lower demons. They surrounded the two people on the sofa, but did not rush to start attacking.
"Actually, it won’t take so many people to deal with you two." Mrs Kathleen smiled haughtily and clapped her hands. The barrier between her and them changed its shape, and began to expand from a curtain of light. In just a few seconds, it turned into a sheet of light, trapping them inside.
"This enchantment can protect people, and of course it can trap people. This is a half-field item. Although I can't use cards like you foreigners, items are still useful. I have to say that there are some interesting things..."
Mrs Kathleen's arrogant words hadn't been finished yet before Ning Zhou, who was gaining speed, had already waved out his sword—
The low-key and restrained Sword of Judgment swept away the light curtain. Before it, the light curtain, which was strong enough to resist all attacks below a half-field, was just like ordinary glass, and instantly fell apart.
The broken pieces of the light curtain were falling, and Mrs Kathleen's stunned expression behind the barrier seemed to freeze at this moment. Her horror and disbelief twisted into a clown-like expression on her face.
"Do it, do it!" She suddenly came to her senses, screaming and shouting.
The lower demon around them howled and rushed forward, but before running even a few steps, they were frightened into kneeling on the ground by a terrible force—the powerful oppressive feeling was like an iron tower on the top of each demon's head, which was more dignified than terror and more horrible than majesty.
Every demon's mind couldn't help but see a similar image: an ancient dragon as big as a mountain, raising itself high and staring at the demons at its feet that were each smaller than one of its scales...
This was no longer a simple gap in ability, but a crushing hierarchy between different creatures.
Mrs Kathleen fell to her knees with a gasp, and supported herself against the ground with both hands awkwardly. The oppressive feeling that went straight to her soul made her unable to conceive thoughts of resistance. The cruel and bloody power divide between demons determined that a powerful devil wanted to kill a weak demon, and it would barely need to work to do it.
Unless the pressure was released, it would be enough for a lower demon to collapse and die.
Terrified sweat dripped down her forehead. At this moment, Mrs Kathleen's heart was desperate and fearful.
This was the full force of destruction, which is terrible to behold... She had experienced the cruel war more than 20 years ago, that is, at that time, she had betrayed her human identity and thrown herself into the Devil's camp, changing from a poor human girl in a border town to a Devil’s follower, and finally she herself became a demon.
She had even seen the Destroyer with her own eyes. Handsome and silent, he wore a uniform and walked through the cheering army of demons, as if everything he ruled over was nothing but trivial things in the world. He didn't deliberately release his force, but his whole body was full of destructive power, which made her unable to forget. Even though the appearance of the Lord of Destruction in her memory had already blurred, the sensation of his force still lingered.
In the more than 20 years since the fall of the Destroyer, she had never been amazed by any power. Even though she had joined the Slaughter Secret Society, she always maintained a calm and mocking attitude towards the crazy believers in the Secret Society. She despised the crazy believers, and from the bottom of her heart, she didn't think there was anything remarkable about these three new Devils.
However, ever since the fall of the old Devil King, the Underworld was leaderless. Although they had gained power, they were not truly "Devil Kings".
After all, none of them had started the ceremony.
Without this ceremony, whether it was Power, Fraud, or Slaughter, it was just a pseudo-Devil King with an empty title. In the past 20 years, there was only one Devil who was truly recognized as a Devil King in the demon world.
But the Destroyer had fallen. Who was this person who also used the force of destruction, and was infinitely close to the field level?

golden hour
prompt fill for @ataleofcrowns. congratulations on the chapter 6 release cherry! 💛
prompt: facade pairing: navid/xelef  rating: T word count: 2,042 warning: spoilers for X’s scene during chapter 6!
Xelef is rather partial to the color gold.
Gold meant a full belly. Gold meant a job well done. Gold meant having survived yet another battle.
Gold motivated him and the people around him. Gold got him into trouble as easily as it got him out of it.
So when gold eyes looked defiantly into his, a spark of light brightening that nebulous place where his intuition resides, and dropped a heavy sack clinking with a familiar sound, there was no other option but to say yes.
Xelef’s not quite sure when he starts thinking of the flash of cleverness in Navid’s eyes more than the sparkle of coin.
Just the night before, Heval forced him to examine this new tendency and why they haven’t yet moved on from Marabad. He’d resisted giving Heval the satisfaction of his admission at the time, but that was before his tendency powered his sprint to the tunnels and the burst of fire that kept Navid safe.
If Xelef’s urgency directed his aim closer to the kill than he intended, it was only because he wanted to do a thorough job. Certainly not because for a split second, the jagged edges of fear pierced through the hard acceptance that has fused with the shell of his heart.
That was before he discovered just how common of an enemy he and Navid have. Before gold also became something to defend instead of just throw at his leisure.
He didn’t divulge anything to the Blades besides the public warning that the Palace issued—which he still disagrees with, but spirits know there’s a reason it’s not him making those decisions.
Xelef felt Heval’s questioning suspicion curb somewhat, as well as the Blades’ recommitment to Navid. It helped him regain some stability in himself. As long as he’s not the only one with a soft spot for the newfound Crown he can tell himself that the way Navid affects him isn’t unique.
None of them had embraced Navid until his tears and the grip of his nightmare dissipated though. The intensity of Navid’s vulnerability had stunned him that night. Xelef thinks he might be able to relate to the way that his walls must have crumbled under their own weight during that moment, when the relief of a mission accomplished finally gave way to exhaustion. If he ever experiences it for himself, that is.
Instead of being unsettled by the raw display of emotion he’d had to insist on leaving Navid behind, lest the way his eyes wavered like coins at the bottom of a fountain compelled him to do something neither of them were ready for.
Despite the magnetic tension between them, he knows that they don’t trust each other. He’d considered Navid’s feelings only briefly when he conceived his plan before deciding to just deal with the consequences.
Well, now here they are. He’d anticipated how Navid might feel once his shrewd mind pieced it all together, but Xelef hadn’t foreseen how much he’d care.
It needles at him, the way Navid takes his motivations regarding coin at face value when they discuss the coronation. And it needles at him that it needles at him. That’s what he wants the Crown to believe anyway, right?
The dissonance isn’t really something he wants to entertain so he distracts himself by distracting Navid.
It’s rather more fun to catch the Crown staring at him than contemplate why there’s a kernel of him that anticipates an opportunity to be seen. Not just looked at as he so often is, up for strangers’ interpretation as he is now so used to, but seen.
The gold in Navid’s eyes is alive in a way coin could never be. There’s a playfulness that seems to live in Navid’s irises, which Xelef’s learning is partly a diversion for the cunning survivalist underneath.
Xelef stares right back, shameless in the way he parts the seam of his lips to drag his tongue across the bottom before letting Navid see how the plump softness of it gives under his thumb. He delights in darkening that sparkling mischief into something imaginative and promising and it’s not long before he gives the two of them a reason to leave the room together. The indulgently sly way that Navid looks at him insists that Xelef get him alone.
Awareness thrums between them as they walk together, but he can sense a contemplative mix of emotions from the man next to him. It’s enough to make him curious. “What are you thinking about?”
“Oh, nothing much, only the fact that I’m now responsible for millions of lives,” Navid is just as practiced as he is at showing who he’s supposed to be. If Xelef couldn’t sense his anxiety he might’ve believed his blithe tone.
The stakes are high and Xelef can feel the weight of that reality on Navid’s shoulders as if it sits on him like a pauldron. It’d be a flattering and dashing pauldron the way Navid wears it, but a symbol of conflict and its inevitable consequences nonetheless.
Xelef meets the slight bite of Navid’s sarcasm with his pragmatism, forged in fire and quenched to harden like steel. “If you obsess over the weight of your choices, you’ll become paralyzed by fear, and in that state you’re of no use to anyone.”
Navid eyes are sharp as he seems to consider not just his words but also his intent. Whatever he decides to himself seems to satisfy him because some of the spark in his eyes returns. Xelef wonders what conclusion Navid came to, to look at him like he knows something Xelef doesn’t.
He thinks he sees some relief in there too, and Xelef tells himself it relieves him in turn because he needs the Crown to be clear-headed and not because of the possibility that sharing his genuine perspective might have made him rise in Navid’s esteem.
“Don’t look so surprised,” Xelef steers them back into familiar waters with a self-satisfied twist of his lips. “I’m not just a pretty face, you know.”
Navid lets out a huff of a chuckle. He must be more exhausted than he let on because they slide into silence again. Xelef’s attempt at distracting Navid is successful though and soon enough he’s unable to contain his amusement. Xelef puffs up at the suggestion of his altruism, sliding back into the easy role of carefree rogue.
“Altruistic? Pah! Disgusting.”
But Navid promptly tugs at his facade. “You can drop the act, you know. I know you’re not wholly selfish at heart.”
“Is that what you really think, or is that what you hope for?” A devious rhythm softens the quick reflexes of his defenses even as his heart starts to race. Being exposed is terrifyingly thrilling. Or thrillingly terrifying. Both?
“You do like to perform. The role of carefree mercenary suits you well, I admit. But that can’t be all that there is to you.”
Navid pins him with piercing gold and Xelef hardly realizes as he’s backed against a window. It’s been a long time since anyone cared to find out who he really is as much as Navid ostensibly does.
Navid steps close enough that he has to tilt his chin down to hold his gaze and even he can’t deny that the proximity makes him feel like a live wire, like his pulse itself might jump out of his skin so it can press against the man who’s always so tantalizingly near.
Xelef considers that he might have met his match in Navid with a smirk.
Navid already has a decently apt approximation of him, despite Xelef’s penchant for misdirection and the fact that they’ve only really known each other a handful of days. Xelef’s moved quickly in the past but never quite like this.
But then again, nothing gets him into trouble as easily as gold.
“Navid.”
Xelef reaches a hand out, soothing a knuckle against the slightly puckered scar on Navid’s cheek. He’ll have to ask him the story behind it soon.
“If you wish for me to treat you tenderly, you need only ask.”
It comes out as a gentler murmur than he intends. Xelef doesn’t need to speak up to be heard after all, with how much closer Navid gets as he anchors a rough hand on top of his. It’s as close to an acknowledgement of Xelef’s complex and often contradictory thoughts and emotions about the man in front of him—the ones he prefers to leave unaddressed because they leave him feeling uncomfortably bare.
“Don’t tempt me, Xelef,” Navid’s voice is rough with restraint as his thick brows furrow with caution. “I’ll start believing you.”
“I lie about a lot of things, my dark-haired beauty, but never about this.”
“That’s a lie,” Navid purses his lips, eyes narrowing even as he considers his own assertion. It’s a look that Xelef has seen on him before, usually around a table with others, as Navid weighs the reality of what he knows against the possibilities of what he doesn’t to figure out how to move forward.
Just like earlier, Xelef feels the foreign compulsion for Navid to have confidence in him. It’s been a while since he cared to prove himself to anyone, and even now his better sense is reminding him that the distance he places between himself and others is there out of necessity. If he weren’t deep in the shit of it he’d find it amusingly fitting that they can both see glimpses past each other’s bravado. Of course the person that interests him most is also the one that directly challenges him to leave the familiarity of his facade.
“Perhaps.”
He doesn’t confirm or deny it, though it’s getting harder and harder to ignore his hope that Navid will just figure it out and acknowledge it for both of their sakes. Whether his evasiveness is a test of Navid’s understanding of him or his own hesitation to be understood, he can’t determine.
Neither can Navid it seems, because he redirects them to less murky waters. “And what is this, exactly?”
Xelef doesn’t answer immediately, taking his time to admire the sharp lines of Navid’s handsome face to reinforce his memory of it for later, after they part for the night.
“Right now? I would call this a flirtation,” this part is easy to admit. Flirtation comes naturally to both of them. He’s noticed the easy compliments Navid gives to others, how he effortlessly keeps those he thinks he might have use for close. His motives seem genuine enough—Xelef himself knows what the line between manipulation and exploitation looks like—though his charisma certainly has a craftily calculating edge to it.
“But we can make it anything you want it to be.”
Xelef leaves the rest up to Navid’s astute interpretation. An acute sense of anticipation holds him in place as Navid opens his mouth to respond and Xelef internally wills him to see—
—Magic displaces above Navid’s head, and the breath Xelef had been holding spills out as a laugh. Whatever Navid was about to say is swept up in him trying to recover from the spirits giving him away.
Ah well. At least he’ll have something to tease Navid about later.
Xelef doesn’t question how easy it is to insist that he keep his dagger with him. What would it mean if he and Navid use the same blade the first time they have to kill? Maybe it wouldn’t mean anything at all, but it reassures him that even if he’s away he can still be there for Navid when it happens, when the world inexorably reminds him of why he’ll always have to protect himself.
Is that altruism? When he tries to correct his own buried regrets by helping someone else avoid having the same ones?
Even more questions he’s not sure he wants to find the answers to.
But when he feels Navid’s resolve solidify inside him, sees the squaring of his shoulders as he lifts his gaze from the designs on his door and takes a steadying breath before stepping inside, Xelef knows he’ll have to accept that it might not end up being up to him anyway.
Gold just might be the death of him.
fin.
author’s note: i’ve been wanting to do a character study in X’s perspective for a while and there were so many LAYERS to their scene in chapter 6 that i took a one word prompt and wrote two thousand words about it lmao. i wanted to explore the duality between X’s persona and their actions and set a starting point for them early in the romance.
there’s a really delicious tension right now when they’re not acknowledging their deeper interest in the crown despite the fact that they’re always eye fucking whenever they can so much as see each other. i also wanted to play with the fact that they both know that there’s more than meets the eye and ALSO that they’re being manipulated in the grander scheme of their own personal agendas.
i also wanted to mold navid’s characterization from the perspective of someone trying to resist falling in love with him. spoiler alert X, it’s impossible. anyways! so many thoughts, head full of X. hope i did my favorite royal boy toy justice 🤎
