It’s just occurred to me that I’ve never shared my love of the Dark Gifts trilogy by Vic James on this account so I’m here to correct that because I ADORE these books and I havent really seen anyone talking about them.

They are absolutely incredible, and if you’re a fan of Six of Crows or the Grishaverse in general then I would definitely recommend them not only because they are both vibrant and interesting reads with the morality of the characters and the system (very much the focus) being constantly held in question whilst also being fun and enjoyable YA fantasy but also because viewing them side by side for me brings forth a fascinating study of power systems and particularly the presentation of magic (please note for the purposes of this I’m classing the powers in these books as magic but in the novels neither of them are defined that way) as a resource in the fantasy genre. The ‘magic’ in The Dark Gifts trilogy is the driving force that has shaped all of the political systems, putting those with literal power into political power, whereas the ‘magic’ in the Grishaverse has led to the abuse and constant endangerment of all those gifted with it, even in the places they are supposedly safest; both systems are very much in the foreground shown as corruptive and dangerous. In the Dark Gifts, those without power are abused somewhat similarly to the way Grisha are despite being in the majority - they experience dehumanisation, abuse, and enslavement sanctioned by the laws that shape their country and even in the places where they are supposedly safer (for example, Abigail believing she’d be safer in a household than in a slavetown) they are still mistreated and viewed as less than human, which is arguably similar to the Ravkan view of Grisha: they are “safer” in Ravka because the country will not hunt or kill them for their mere existence, and yet they are taken from their families as children and raised to be soldiers by a compulsory draft, a role which most of them will take on before they are legal adults.

I would say the Dark Gifts trilogy is more weighed down in politics than Six of Crows is so it might not be everyone’s style, and I would say that they’re probably classed as slow-paced books but it is a while since I last read them so if you’re interested I’d encourage you to research that for yourself. I highly highly highly recommend these books; they’re by Vic James and the first in the trilogy is called Gilded Cage

Into the Grishaverse Limited Edition

What a box! Three books and eight items?! Amazing!! BUT, it was $190, plus shipping! Yikes!! I sat around waiting for this so go on sale, I was so determined to get hold of it, but it didn't sell out for months, so I needn't have worried - the book-only option sold out really quickly, so I guess most people aren't as into the goodies as I am!

The books are the original Grishaverse trilogy, by Leigh Bardugo: "Shadow & Bone", "Siege & Storm", and "Ruin & Rising". I'm assuming they'll release the rest of the books in the future, and I'm hoping they also do full goody boxes for those. These editions have exclusive dust jackets, interior jacket artwork, foiled endpapers, ribbon bookmarks, stencilled edges. and foiled hardcases. (Scroll down to the bottom for photos of the covers and edges) The only downside is that these books aren't the same size as every single other Leigh Bardugo I have on my shelf! So I can no longer keep all my Bardugoes together! I only have fancy editions of these books, so these are the first copies of books 2 & 3 that I own, since they didn't do collector's editions of them.

The first item is a tea mug! I love this item! It's glass, with a wood-effect handle and lid, and it has a glass strainer that sits inside. There's a gold "Little Palace" design on the outside. I love mugs with strainers, because loose leaf is my preferred tea brewing method, and I've already tried this one out!

The second item is a blanket! It's black and white, and has the Grishaverse map on it. I'm always a fan of a blanket, although I have no idea where I'm going to put it - I have way too many. This is probably the smallest blanket I've ever seen! But it's gorgeous.

The next item is an embroidered book pouch, based on Alina's blue Kefta! They call this a book sleeve, but it's way more than that! This is like a full-on book bag! It has a popper close, and a huge main section big enough for at least two books, and about five little pockets for bits and bobs. I love this item!

Next is a set of two necklaces. These are based on the Saint Tokens in the books, one inspired by the Darkling, and one by the Sun Summoner. One is silver, one is gold. These are kind of clunky, but actually I really like these, so I'm sure I'll wear both of them!

And there's a tin of loose leaf tea. This is designed to look like a celebration of Nikolai's coronation. I tried this (in my new mug!) and it's pretty bland. But it's drinkable, and I appreciate that this is clearly marked for allergens, and is actually safe for me to drink!

Next is a set of enamel pins. These are huge, and so, so heavy. There is no way you could ever lug one of these around on a jacket or bag, it would weigh the fabric down so much! They're really pretty, though, and feature the Darkling, Alina, and Mal. They're in a foiled velvet presentation case, so it's an item worth having just for the box - I'll hold on to these as a keepsake, even though I won't wear them.

There's also a passport holder. Normally I wouldn't be fussed about this, but I just happen to be going on holiday this year, for the first time in almost a decade! This is a brown leather-effect "Ravkan Passport" holder, and it also has a zip pouch and card slots, so I can probably just use it as a wallet when I'm not on holiday.

The final item is a set of three bookmarks. This is the disappointing item - I guess there's always one. These feature the three amplifiers from the books, and the designs are nice, but they're on transparent plastic bookmarks which I hate, because the design gets totally obscured by whatever is behind them, and they look a mess. Maybe there's a way of backing these on something white, to make them look better?

This is a really, really good box. I don't think it's actually worth $190, since a similar box with one book last year was only $65. That means they charged $125 for the two additional books! It seems absolutely extortionate, but I guess with such a popular series, they can kind of charge whatever they like.

I saw someone said that the darkling is the andrew tate of grishaverse

lmfaoooo are we in false equivalence land right now? I love this place! did you know that somebody tried and failed to posit that the “how easy it is to invent a humanity […]” quote is similar to the methods by which fans analyze his character? and how they call him the kylo ren of the grishaverse? I even saw someone offensively call him a nazi! it's literally like crack to me. I hardly need hard evidence that these people don't know what they're talking about when they spew stuff like that completely unironically.

I love reading anti posts because it helps me formulate my own opinions better, but what's the point of reading something that doesn't even have a basic grasp of the material - if they even read it at all (which it's doubtful that they did)? nothing turns me away from an analysis faster than weird false equivalences, any and all logical fallacies, and people who say he wanted genocide or that he was a rapist or some other bizarre shit lmfao. like your meta/analysis is good right up until you reveal how little you actually know about the world or the books you're reading.

SIX OF CROWS DOLLS!

So, at the beginning of July, my mom and I were shopping at a local used bookstore when we found an adorable little Nikolai Lantsov plushie (originally from this Illumicrate box), and I immediately fell in love. I furiously Googled to see if any other Grishaverse plushies existed and was disappointed to see they didn’t—so we decided to take matters into our own hands.…

Almost two months, several late nights, and many trips to craft stores, Dollar Tree, and Wal-Mart later, all six of them are done!!! My mom, a fellow Six of Crows fan and a ridiculously talented crafter, worked really hard on them, adding little details to make each of them true to their canon counterparts. She made them all from scratch, not using any pre-existing patterns or tutorials—she'd never made dolls before and sort of figured out the process as she went.

The dolls themselves fall somewhere between figurines and plushies—they have weighted boots so they can stand on their own, but they're made from soft material (felt, chenille yarn, velvet, etc.) that makes them perfect to snuggle, cuddle, and hug, which I've done in spades. I’m so happy to have these one-of-a-kind dolls, made with love, to call my very own. 💖

First we have the Bastard of the Barrel himself, Kaz Brekker! He sports a snazzy tailored suit and tie (made from a ribbon), with some rakish locks of chenille yarn hair falling over his eyes from underneath his impeccably-groomed velvet ‘do. His gloves are black duct tape over his hands, and they even have five individually cut-out fingers! (He does not yet have a cane; we’re working on that. The man needs his mobility aids!)

We decided early on that we wanted all the plushies to smile—I wouldn't really want them to scowl at me while I snuggled and hugged them. I imagine Kaz has some serious schemes being brewed up in that soft little head of his, though...

Next we have Inej Ghafa, the Wraith! She was actually the first doll we made (and was originally much shorter than Kaz and Jesper; her legs became longer when we duct-taped them for stability!). The top of her hair is black felt; the braid is jumbo strands of chenille yarn, braided together. Her cowl (purple felt, held in place by a matching purple pipe cleaner) provides the perfect cover for spying on dark Ketterdam streets, and her boots have beautiful silver trim—well-suited for hiding a knife. Her top has some similar trim, though it's hard to see in these pictures, with a subtle dash of magenta tulle to make her extra glam.

Kanej together—Ketterdam’s ultimate power couple 💖 I love that their height difference was maintained; this was sort of accidental when we made the dolls, but it ended up being a really nice canon detail!

As a licensed Toy Therapist (a profession I made up—I'm sure half a bachelor's degree in English and psychology is enough for me to qualify for licensure; after all, I AM the licensure board!), I have, through many intense sessions, successfully cured Kaz and Inej of their touch aversion—so they have both been the recipient of many, many snuggles and hugs from me. At one point, my mom told me, "You've probably given these Crow plushies more hugs in the past week than the characters have had in their entire lives"—which almost reduced me to tears. One thing I love about these dolls is that if I'm ever rereading the books and thinking, "[insert character here] needs a HUG," I can just reach over and give them one!

Now, here’s Matthias Helvar! His luscious golden locks are made of individual strands of chenille yarn (pulled back into a queue), and his scarf is hand-knitted. Also note the boots, with thick soles and “fur” lining to withstand the toughest Fjerdan winters. In the second picture, you can sort of see some blue “fur” around his collar—this was actually made from a blue glove, with fuzzy lining, that was part of a Cinderella costume for Halloween that I had when I was 6!

Mom and I imagine this is Matthias post-series, after having gotten into a relationship with Nina and overcoming his Wizard Racism, so instead of a serious, brooding expression, he has more of a happy smile. (Because as we all know, nothing bad ever happens to him, ever.)

Nina Zenik, Heartrender extraordinaire! Here we see her in her lovely red kefta with gold trim (the same gold trim used for Matthias' suit—fun fact: it was also part of an old Halloween costume, specifically Belle when I was 5) and some lovely golden boots with flowered trim—maybe the ones she was flirting with in a shop window? Fun fact: she originally had some green staining on her face from a mishap when we tried to use a marker to make her eyes look more green—but then Mom took a darker marker and turned it into eyeshadow. And now this doll has better makeup than me.

Helnik! They look very happy together, if you ask me. Matthias' right arm permanently sticks out at an angle, as you can see—a consequence of the duct-taping we did to his body for stability (it also makes him feel very solid and buff when I hug him, which is nicely in-character). This either means he's constantly reaching out his arm around Nina's back (awww) or he's constantly sticking out his arm to hitchhike and get himself far, far away from all the crazy people in Ketterdam.

Jesper Fahey, decked out in all the Barrel flash! He's rocking the green and gold look with a plaid jacket, tailored pants, and a tulle ascot. His hair is jumbo chenille yarn and it's SO ridiculously soft, oh my god, I cannot even properly convey to you guys how good it feels to nuzzle my cheek against his soft little head. His shoes have tiny laces, and it's hard to see here but his belt buckle has a tiny "F" for Fahey. 🎵 'Cause every girl (and boy)'s crazy 'bout a sharp-dressed man! 🎶

And finally...Wylan van Eck! This was the last doll we made (we finished him in the wee hours of this morning), and Mom seriously went above and beyond with him. His hair is red chenille yarn—it turned out to actually be the least curly/kinky of all the yarn we used, but Mom sewed it in specially to make sure it curled on his head. He carries a little messenger bag made of duct tape; inside is some rolled-up sheet music and plans for explosives, tied together with twine that you can see sticking out from inside the bag. (It also has a sticker with the initial W for Wylan—just like the sticker with Jesper's initial on his belt!) And in the second picture, you can see that he has tiny safety goggles! They're made out of duct tape and the plastic packaging of some bobbins for the sewing machine.

A funny quirk: because Nina, Matthias, and Wylan were made after the first three with a different and more standardized body mold, Wylan ended up being the biggest of the three...by a lot. He's a lot bigger than his boyfriend, that's for sure! You can see this height disparity in the first pic. My theory is that one of his chemical experiments went wrong and ended up acting as some sort of growth serum for him. Mom's theory is that he was jealous of being so much shorter than his boyfriend, so he asked Nina to Tailor his height, but Nina got distracted during the process and accidentally made Wylan a LOT taller than he was supposed to be and now can't figure out how to change him back.

Or I can just pose them in photos so that Jesper is standing on a box or something—like in the second pic—so he looks just as tall as he's supposed to be.

And finally, here's a picture of all six of them with the Nikolai plushie that started it all! He looks happy to have so many new friends.

And that's it! I love these guys so much and can't stop looking at them, cuddling them, and kissing them on their soft little foreheads. I'm so happy to have embarked on this project with my mom over the summer—we learned a lot, bonded over crafting and our love of the Grishaverse, and had a lot of fun! I saw someone call Matthias the Jason Grace of the Grishaverse and it got me wondering why these characters were received the way they were by the fandom which from what I've seen is either hatred or slight fondness but nowhere near a favorite character. There are also a few fans that love these characters with all their hearts but they aren't that vocal, as well as fans that just don't care about them in general.

I have a theory for why this is though I haven't finished HoO to this day so correct me if I'm wrong about certain things as it pertains to Jason. The main similarity between SOC and HoO is that they are multi pov stories about a group of teenagers on a mission (I'm aware this is a generalization). The story is just as centered around the group dynamic as it is the mission and neither of these guys have that strong of a connection with the group especially when it comes to Matthais.

In fact it seems like the strongest tie they do have is with their girlfriend whom the readers tend to like more (especially with Matthais). On top of them not being that integrated into the group they tend to spend time antagonizing characters fans have known longer and like more looking at you again Matthais, though Jason had his moments with Percy as well.

This tends to make the character very annoying and I will say that while the way Leah Bardugo wrote Matthias made sense she really wasn't doing him any favors. Especially when she had a whole chapter with Nina being borderline hysterical when they were trying to rescue him only for him to choke her as soon as he woke up (that made me laugh tbh) -10000 on likeability right off the bat.

The authors also made the ensemble cast far more interesting than these characters (more so with Jason, I actually love Matthais' backstory) by either not exploring their backstory enough or just by making the other characters backstories better.

So we end up with a character who is not as integrated into the found family dynamic that we are reading for and even insults fan favourite characters (though I will never not laugh at Matthais' constant digs at Kaz). Characters that are usually more interesting than them mind you and then when they finally do come around they die which I think is the authors response to the fans reception of those characters because I still believe Matthais' death was unnecessary.

Also another aspect of Matthais' story that made me personally have mixed feeling about him for awhile is his attitude towards Grisha. Obviously it's his entire arc and it takes time to unlearn hateful indoctrination but at the end of the day it's hard to sympathize with a bigot even when that bigot is a traumatized child soldier. I do think they did Matthias wrong with this comparison though I think he was written alot better than Jason was and I like him way more (but he's still no where near my favorite crow😶). I also think Jason should have has a series or duology about him pre HoO.

Apologies to anyone in the Grishaverse / Wesper / Six of Crows area who follows me and'll get this but this is my shameless fanfic drop for a webtoon called Daybreak by Moosopp (please read it wesper fans its a super fluffy / kinda slowburn BL featuring poc!!)

Honestly I've been thinking abt it and Wesper and the main ship in daybreak have a decent amount in common. We got the flirting, height difference, a gay and a bi, mutual pining- it's simply wonderful.
