With all the Google AI BS happening right now, I’m so happy to be using DuckDuckGo and desperately hope they never attempt something like this. I genuinely do not understand why Google went and thought “Oh! Surely feeding our LLM results from spaces on the internet where people can post quite literally anything is a marvelous idea, let’s implement this!”, especially since said LLM clearly cannot detect satire or joke posts if it isn’t clearly stated. Obviously, none of us should be taking anything the internet says seriously without fact checking, but I am vaguely concerned about how naive young children/older people who haven’t adapted to the magical world of the web are going to take things like this, for instance. Haven’t we learned our lesson from ChatGPT hallucinating the most random shit and not accepting “That’s incorrect” for an answer?

I'm putting something together for work on the flaws and limitations of ChatGPT and for funsies I asked it to write me a little something about Steve Rogers and disability. Well, if you already had doubts about the factual accuracy and/or thematic depth of this "marvelous" tool, enjoy:

It can't even get basic plot and character details right. I also asked it to provide some sources on the topic and it did—a whole list of references, perfectly formatted! It's just a shame that none of them actually exist.

AI is, by its very nature, biased towards westernism/racism/etc, and yet it was not hard at all to get it to make this conclusion. Its kinda obvious, of course. But I think its really worth knowing in your heart. 💗

This morning I got into a debate about ChatGPT which is already not a pleasant experience and it was with my bio prof which is a less pleasant experience but the most batshit thing about it is how the debate started. Because what happened is that the class was about blood (normal thing to learn about in a human biology class) and because it's October the prof included a picture of Dracula on the first slide. That's fine, that's good, that's cool. He asked, "We'll have to be in class on Halloween, should I tell everyone they have to dress up?" Normal thing to say when class is just starting, imo. I responded with what I think is an equally normal thing - "I'm already dressing up, one of my professors is offering extra credit if I dress as a literary character." And he paused, and he thought about it, and he said, "Literature professors - they're real scary about using ChatGPT."

I tried the snapchat ai and I hate it. Spending more than a second with it makes it clear the strategy is just: throw in one or two character catchphrases, give a normal explanation of the thing, then close with a catchphrase. Right before the Jerma one it told me it didn’t know who Jerma was. Not only is it weird and creepy (any question I asked about it’s preferences like boy/girl or name, it refused to give me an answer and just reiterated it exists to serve me) but it’s not even good at what it’s trying to do
