Make Mine Apple
Let's be clear I never had a computer growing up in any of the homes I resided in, whether my mom's apartment, my god-grandma's house or my paternal grandparents home. Computers weren't a thing even considered or even a forethought. But I have been fascinated with computers since I was a child and more widely technology. I wouldn't be as bold to say I was a futurist, but I loved the idea of a future where humans used technology in smart ways. This is a philosophy that I still hold on to today.
Apple Macintosh SE
My first computer was an Macintosh SE, sold by Apple from nineteen eighty-seven to nineteen ninety. I got one used from my friend Ricardo 'Campi' Guzman. I can't recall how much I paid him for this very classic Mac but I never regretted it once. It traveled with me on my four month European tour and was a staple in the publishing of my early nineties zine Fashion Fag Magazine. Based on this that would mean I got it from him sometime around ninety-four when I signed the lease for my first apartment, and I gave it back to him as payment for removing the carpets in my current apartment in ninety-seven. The three best years of my life with my first Apple computer, which for all intensive purposes was a portable computer albeit it nearly weighed twenty pounds. I remember when we traveled on tour I always insisted to the flight attendants that I always board with my computer and my Apple Stylewriter printer that was also in the bag I got from Campi.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Apple Powerbook 5300
Part of the goal of my ninety-six European tour was to save up for a laptop and I had my eye on the 5300 released in nineteen ninety-five. I didn't realize at the time that this was not only the first of Apple's Powerbook series but also the one with the most manufacturing problems that lead Apple to replacing mine with an Apple Powerbook 1400c
Albeit this being a black mark on Apple it was very exciting for me as a customer and a fan to have purchased one Apple laptop and then a few months later get a brand spanking new Apple laptop for at no additional cost.
Apple Powerbook 1400c
This Powerbook was sold from ninety-six to ninety eight and as I said replaced my fifty-three hundred. I still have this laptop today and it still works. I briefly lent it to my grandmother who used it as a word processor for her church projects. At nearly seven pounds it was half the weight of my SE and it found itself a lot of the time traveling around with me in the hard-plastic German children's backpack that I had acquired during my European tour.
If I recall correctly this fourteen hundred was the very laptop I was pretending to work on when my supervisor at Kirshenbaum Bond & Partners extended my temp assignment indefinitely having learned that not only did I know how to use Quark, Photoshop and Illustrator but was quite technologically savvy with all of the Microsoft Office applications also. I want to be clear I deliberately did this in an effort to illustrate my value beyond someone who can just set up food for a meeting which is why I initially was recruited.
On this laptop I would produce my last issues of Fashion Fag Magazine and also create The Streetwalker a newsletter for the New York Peer AIDS Coalition the non-for profit that I volunteered at after leaving GMHC over creative differences. It was a golden time for me with the burgeoning of the internet I would soon need to upgrade to something for a more modern time. America Online was cute, but the beginning of the end of dial-up internet was coming.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Apple iMac G3
This all-in-one desktop computer was sold from nineteen ninety-eight to two thousand and three, I acquired the tangy orange one and used this quite powerful and underrated model to launch my design firm specializing in websites, branding and product design. It also was my partner in my fledging fine art photography career being the first of my computers in which I started to archive and edit my photos with the very adult applications like Lightroom.
Before I lent this computer to my late brother and his wife, where it would meet its demise, it was present as I first started exhibiting my work publicly transforming from a graphic artist to a fine artist. This computer was present for my first and last long term relationship and my exploration of high speed internet with DSL and consequently Cable. Those previous laptops had been all about that dial-up life, something I had now left behind me for the faster speeds of Internet 1.0.
Tumblr media
Apple Macbook Pro
Introduced two-thousand six I acquired mine in early 2008 a fifteen inch I remember it cost around three thousand dollars this was not just a computer but an investment and one that paid off for me in triplicate.
Wow, this laptop was with me through my return to corporate America now as a freelancer, my various art exhibitions including my New York Times reviewed show, presenting my work nationally, internationally and at museums. It came along with me for my trips to India and Africa, it entertained my nephew during his visits, edited my fledging dabbles in video, and my first short film.
I have Adobe's Creative Suite on here Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Flash and Lightroom, Microsoft Office, Excel, Adobe Acrobat and of course Apple's own iMovie, I never did learn Adobe Premier just never having the opportunity. I felt like I could do anything with this computer and I did. I stepped up my pussy game creating the most impressive proposals for my art, letterhead for my fine art career, impressive graphics, promotional materials, and the highest resolution for the birth of my art into the real world.
This would also be my last proper computer. After this baby I wouldn't need as much power and would move my computing to the iPad (3rd Generation) then my first iPad Pro 10.5" and now my iPad Pro 11" which I am writing this missive on with my Apple Magic Keyboard, which has seen better days.
Unlike a nibling of mine who must own stock in Apple and owns, the Apple Watch, iPhone, iPad, Macbook Air and AirPods I have always found its best to limit myself to my technology especially if I can find everything in one device I don't need the redundancy. I stopped wearing a watch years ago, I have been adamant I never want a cellphone, as I just said my days of heavy lifting are over so no more need for a laptop and I have never liked things in my ears. Besides my iPad Pro can make phone calls and tell the time, I don't need it tracking my biometrics.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also think I am from a generation who actually enjoys mono-use appliances. I own a turntable and a set of Yamaha studio speakers for my return to vinyl. I ditched my microwave for an induction cooker, and utilize a humidifier every winter and sometimes a space heater. There are no smart devices in my home, which is why I was annoyed when the landlord recently moved our intercom system to an app, when the analog version worked fine for decades.
Tumblr media
As a person who loves technology I still like to be smart with what I use and what I don't use. I am not the person to run out and get something just because its trendy like Fitbits which had their moment like Tomagotchi's in the nineties. You won't find a landfill with a bunch of electronics that come out of my house yearly. It took me nearly twenty years before I gave up my flatbed scanner, and my Canon color printer I sold on eBay after I didn't need such a powerful printer anymore. Oh and I have never owned a television my entire adult life.
Up until the last few years I still was hangin on to that free PC by Compaq I got nearly twenty years ago even though I had discarded the monitor and keyboard a while ago. If there's one thing even as just a asterisk that I would like to be remembered for its my technological savvy and design aesthetic. Personally they were both creative aspects of my personality, and as everyone knows the best brand for creative folks is Apple, and we've been friends since I got out of college.

One thing that I keep seeing whenever I make posts that are critical of macs is folks in the notes going "they make great computers for the money if you just buy used/refurbs - everyone knows not to buy new" and A) no they don't know that, most people go looking for a new computer unless they have already exhausted the new options in their budget and B) no they don't make great computers for the money, and being used doesn't do anything to make them easier to work on or repair or upgrade.
Here's a breakdown of the anti-consumer, anti-repair features recently introduced in macbooks. If you don't want to watch the video, here's how it's summed up:
In the end the Macbook Pro is a laptop with a soldered-on SSD and RAM, a battery secured with glue, not screws, a keyboard held in with rivets, a display and lid angle sensor no third party can replace without apple. But it has modular ports so I guess that’s something. But I don’t think it’s worthy of IFixIt’s four out of ten reparability score because if it breaks you have to face apple’s repair cost; with no repair competition they can charge whatever they like. You either front the cost, or toss the laptop, leaving me wondering “who really owns this computer?”
Apple doesn't make great computers for the money because they are doing everything possible to make sure that you don't actually own your computer, you just lease the hardware from apple and they determine how long it is allowed to function.
The lid angle sensor discussed in this video replaces a much simpler sensor that has been used in laptops for twenty years AND calibrating the sensor after a repair requires access to proprietary apple software that isn't accessible to either users or third party repair shops. There's no reason for this software not to be included as a diagnostic tool on your computer except that Apple doesn't want users working on apple computers. If your screen breaks, or if the fragile cable that is part of the sensor wears down, your only option to fix this computer is to pay apple.
How long does apple plan to support this hardware? What if you pay $3k for a computer today and it breaks in 7 years - will they still calibrate the replacement screen for you or will they tell you it's time for new hardware EVEN THOUGH YOU COULD HAVE ATTAINED FUNCTIONAL HARDWARE THAT WILL WORK IF APPLE'S SOFTWARE TELLS IT TO?
Look at this article talking about "how long" apple supports various types of hardware. It coos over the fact that a 2013 MacBook Air could be getting updates to this day. That's the longest example in this article, and that's *hardware* support, not the life cycle of the operating system. That is dogshit. That is straight-up dogshit.
Apple computers are DRM locked in a way that windows machines only wish they could pull off, and the apple-only chips are a part of that. They want an entirely walled garden so they can entirely control your interactions with the computer that they own and you're just renting.
Even if they made the best hardware in the world that would last a thousand years and gave you flowers on your birthday it wouldn't matter because modern apple computers don't ever actually belong to apple customers, at the end of the day they belong to apple, and that's on purpose.
This is hardware as a service. This is John Deere. This is subscription access to the things you buy, and if it isn't exactly that right at this moment, that is where things have been heading ever since they realized it was possible to exert a control that granular over their users.
With all sympathy to people who are forced to use them, Fuck Apple I Hope That They Fall Into The Ocean And Are Hidden Away From The Honest Light Of The Sun For Their Crimes.

I hadn't used my 2011 MacBook Pro in a few months because the battery died, and my cat chewed through the cable. I bought a replacement cable for Christmas and booted it up. For some reason, after sitting OFF for a few months, Zorin OS shit the bed and kept throwing update errors at me. So I relented and re-installed it from scratch. I decided to leave the dGPU active this time, to just see, and... somehow everything worked worse on the more powerful AMD dGPU???
Night Light wouldn't work, and the UI was so laggy it wasn't even funny. Not to mention how hot the machine would get at idle. It wasn't fun. I couldn't watch YouTube; I couldn't use LibreOffice; I could even swap desktops with the three-finger GNOME gesture without the entire system lagging. As a last ditch attempt, I used a GRUB Edit to deactivate the AMD dGPU.
And now... everything* is perfect. The laptop is quick and snappy, it uses, like, 2GB less of RAM for some reason, and Night Light even works. The thermal issues are also gone. Somehow, with a less powerful Intel iGPU... Zorin OS runs better now.
Idk. Linux is weird. At least it works. I'm not fucking around with it anymore.
*For some reason sleep doesn't work properly anymore. When I shut the lid, the display turns off, but when I open it back up, I'm not prompted with a password screen. Idk, and idc. I'm not bothering with it. Nobody's gonna snoop through my shit, anyway.

1, 6, 18, 27, 50?
What was the first piece of furniture you bought? My bed! My parents seperated a bit before I moved out so I decided to buy myself a new bed to put at my mums place to take with me later. A mandel from ikea, still have it bc it goes with everything and it has storage.
Most precious thing one of your pets has destroyed? One of my rabbits was staying at my mums and pulled a macbook on the ground chewing the cable oops (luckely it was at deaths door anyway- the laptop i MEAN)
Pro or anti tchotchkes? I'm always pro but trough the years I have become more selective of what I'm putting out bc the dusting man it kills me. I'm also not as easily impressed with thrift store trinkets anymore. Getting really good at 'that's cute but I don't need it'
Do you prefer Boardgame Night, Build-Your-Own-Pizza Night, or Movie Night with your friends? boardgame nights! I don't like pizza and you can't properly catch up during movie nights and everyone keeps falling asleep bc we're too exhausted.
Pro or anti throw pillows? I like to have some but within reason. I also can't put a proper set on my bed bc Marcel needs his haggard ikea shark above my pillow to sleep on or he'll have a mental breakdown

From Biting Apples to Embracing Galaxies: My Switch to Samsung
Tumblr media
For more than a decade, I've always been using the Apple eco-system. My first modern phone was the iPhone 5 in 2012 and it lasted for a couple of years until I upgraded to the iPhone 10 in 2017 after convincing my father that my phone was dying.
The proof: this photo of my phone bricking every 20 minutes when installing a new iOS when I was in university.
instagram
As time passed, the iPhone X has survived numerous trips overseas, journalism jobs, freelancing gigs, concerts, and dating attempts. But like all tech devices, this one is about to reach its end after an incident where it wouldn't turn on properly when it was being charged.
I had two options: wait for the iPhone 15 to come out or move to Samsung. And based on the article, it's quite obvious what happened next.
One last bite of the Apple - why I love the iPhone
Moving to a Galaxy device has to be the hardest decision I've ever made. My original plan was to save $2000 for a brand new Apple product because the Apple ecosystem is pretty good. I can copy a link or photo on my phone and paste it on my Macbook. Airdrop is pretty convenient. Also, my entire family became Apple snobs ever since the release of Airpods. Also, since I moved out from home, Facetime became the most used method of communication between family members because it was instant.
Another cool feature that the iPhone has is that is very easy to customize. From having an Animal Crossing dark mode theme phone to selecting a case, the choices are ripe for the picking.
Lastly, it's just very easy to use. Unless you're planning to do some complicated stuff like jailbreaking, using an iPhone as an everyday device is very simple. Left it somewhere? Use the "Find my phone" app and annoy the heck out of those who try to steal it. Want music? Drop the file into iTunes and it will sync via iCloud. It's that versatile.
But as my phone was quickly on its final breath, as well as the cost of living crisis, waiting for the iPhone 15 was no longer a valid option anymore. So I had to say goodbye to these nifty features and swap to Samsung.
What it was like making the switch
instagram
I bought the Samsung zFlip 4 during the End of the Financial Year sale, without realising that the zFlip 5 would be released 2 months later. Big oof. The reason I got this phone is because the 512 GB model cost $1300 AUD. The case was $10 from Telstra. I got a cuter one for $100 from Caseify.
If I were to buy the iPhone 15 (or in my case, the iPhone 14 Pro), the 512 GB model would have cost me $2400 + the cost of a case and the cable for the highest speeds. In case you were unaware, the 15 models only come with USB 2 speeds. WTF?! Also, there are the MagSafe accessories like chargers, which would cost even more.
Tumblr media
The reason I chose to get the Samsung zFlip 4 is mostly because it's a flip phone and Samsung marketed it as "bending the laws of physics." Another reason is because of BTS. As a BTS fan, mostly a Suga stan, I learned that the K-Pop star will not hold Apple devices. I remember seeing a TikTok where a fan disguised her iPhone to look like a Samsung and the rapper was shocked until he held it on stage.
I was, however, warned about getting this Samsung model from my aunt. She told me that the battery life is bad and that Apple lasts longer. And she only uses her phone for the most basic usage - calls, text, and Facebook. But based on my experience, the battery isn't that bad… unless I use it for Pokemon Sleep.
Tumblr media
Transferring my data from an Apple to a Samsung device is easier said than done. For starters, it nearly took a whole day for the transfer process to be completed. Second, I needed to use a wireless charger for one of my devices because it took so long.
When it came to the user interface, while it's somewhat different, some similarities made using my new phone not that difficult. It perhaps took a week to get used to the new functions and gestures.
I also liked the new camera. It's much more vibrant in my opinion. Much better than the iPhone X if I'm being honest. And there were times I did try filming like it was an old camcorder due to its flip functionalities.
If I have a complaint, it's that my game saves (except for Pokemon Go and Sleep) aren't transferable. This means all that effort I've placed in Tiny Tower for a year and a bit is gone and I would need to start over because the game is synced to Apple's Game Center. However, all of my texts since my senior year of high school made their way to the new device. WTF?
Also, not all the apps transferred to the new device, which makes sense since some of them were discontinued. But finding the APKs for them became a challenge, especially for a photo editor that I've been using for years. Thanks to the subscription model, it's been removed from the app stores.
Final Thoughts
Swapping to Samsung was probably a good decision to make. For starters, I'm no longer bombarded by my family's group chat messages since I no longer live with them. Second, I can text my boyfriend photos through NORMAL TEXT, not Facebook and discord. The amount of memes I've missed during the earlier parts of our relationship due to device differences was a massive pain and now it's all convenient.
While it's a shame I no longer have access to Siri, adding songs to a Samsung device is much easier compared to Apple since it is basically like a hard drive.
I will miss the Apple ecosystem though. iCloud and Apple Notes are super handy. Airdrop is pretty cool. And the new iOS features in the latest system look super appealing. However, these features are something that I would rarely use. I just need a phone to play games, go on social media, take photos and videos, and make phone calls. I won't be making 3D models of my room.
Looking forward to spending the next 5 years with this Samsung device until I have to make the switch once more.
