Tagged by: Fave of faves @bethanyactually--and usually I save every post I'm tagged in to (at least theoretically) do later, but since I actually have returned to watching and listening to things lately, I'm gonna do this one right now.
Last song: Like You Do by Josh Ramsay. And Christian Kane's cover of Fast Car, both of which were recced to me by Leander, who knew I should hear them. But also, while I haven't listened to any of it since Tuesday, I woke up with the Daisy Jones and The Six soundtrack playing in my head...just like it has been ever since I originally started watching the series. Today it's mostly been The River featuring Simone, Regret Me, and More Fun To Miss. I know enough of the lyrics now for the soundtrack to be my constant mental radio as I go about my day.
Currently watching: Nancy Drew S2 (I'm 4 episodes in and enjoying it a lot), Schmigadoon S2 (I've seen half of it and it's still fantastic and I'm bummed I only have 3 episodes to go) and today I'm about to start my Good Omens rewatch so I can head into the new season full of S1 feels. Because my best friend is literally the best, I'm also partly through a DJATS rewatch with Leander seeing it for the first time--making that my favorite thing I am watching right now.
Currently reading: Nightwork by Nora Roberts (I'm about halfway through it and have been borrowing it from @actuallylukedanes forever and I feel very bad about that! I will finish it! I'm also partly through How to Raise an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi, also on loan from Leander. And before that, I was (and remain) partway through literally 20 other ebooks of all kinds--most recently Zero Fail: The Rise and Fall of the Secret Service by Carol Leonnig. There's a ton of great nonfiction that I already have on my tablet and know I'll enjoy cuz I'm that kind of geek...I just rarely read anymore because reading time is time I'm not spending with my millions of other hobbies.
Current obsession: As referenced above, Daisy Jones and The Six, which I am so so happy Leander is watching with me--both helping me get it out of my system a little and letting me indulge even more in my love of it. After we watched it on Wednesday, I was able to listen to something that wasn't the soundtrack for the first time, so I just may be able to dial this obsession down to manageable levels at some point. But GUYS IT'S SO GOOD. I want to gif it as soon as I get back to Photoshop and I kind of want to read the book, when I didn't before. I just want to burrow into the world and live there, and I haven't felt that way in quite a while, about anything. (It's made it harder to engage with other things, which is why I originally was going to add Ted Lasso's completed final season to my week along with Nancy Drew and Schmigadoon, but ended up not doing so because my head and heart are full of DJATS right now. But I missed this feeling, too, so I'm happy to be in love again.)
No-pressure tagging: @actuallylukedanes, @jicklet, @jakeperalta, @beturass, @hondagirll, @mythologicalmango, @dollsome-does-tumblr, @anextrapart, @sentichefuoripiove, @robbiedaymonds and anybody else who wants to do this.
Father Son Holy Gore's Horrible Holiday List of Woe
Father Son Holy Gore’s Horrible Holiday List of Woe
It’s tough to come up with a new, fresh list of Christmas horror for readers to feast upon every year. There are only so many Christmas and holiday-related horror films. But, there are always some new ones each year or two, and there are always old ones that many folks still haven’t seen.
Not all the films on this list actually take place directly at Christmas, and some of them, though they are…
Ya girl is ill and in desperate need of fluff with Jake "Hangman" Seresin, Robert "Bob" Floyd (if your writing him rn), Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw and Mickey "Fanboy" Garcia like how they would be when your sick
Feel free to ignore this is you want
This is so cute! I have yet to write for Bob, it's on my 2024 plans don't worry. I'm ma just write some headcanons and not full stuffs cause I don't really have the time but I really wanted to do this now (it's getting late where I live)
TW: mentions of throwing up
Jake "Hangman" Seresin
first, he's clueless, he doesn't really know what to do. Is he supposed to cook for you? to help you blowing your nose?
if you get really sick to the point you empty your stomach at everything you eat, he tries to be as supportive as he can. holding your hair if it gets in your face? he can do that. rubbing your back when you feel like dying with your head on the toilet seat? he even kisses the back of your head and whispers sweet things to you
he desperately tries to cook you things you can keep; rice, chicken, whatever you need, he makes just so you feel better (spoiler alert, he's not really a great cook)
he even asks you if he needs to take a day or two off so he can take care of you but you promise him he doesn't need to (he respects your decision, he wouldn't have liked you missing work for him either)
he's a southern boy, he practically never gets sick so he takes that as an advantage to cuddle with you in bed and cover your face with sweet kisses
unfortunately, he does get sick and it's your turn to baby him all week
Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw
he knows what to do. he's been raised by the one and only Carole Bradshaw so he knows exactly what kind of food you need to get better asap
he surprises you with his cooking skills. he usually rarely cooks because he's not great either in front of a stove. but when you're not feeling good? that man turns into Gordon Ramsay for you
he even kept his mom's recipes from when he was not older than 15 when she used to cook him nice meals when he was sick
he's a cuddler, he doesn't care if he gets sick, he just wanna keep you safe and warm in his arms.
if you're feeling really bad, he even calls in sick with Mav to take care of you until you get better
Mickey "Fanboy" Garcia
that poor man goes full panic mode, he asks you if you're cold, if you're feeling nauseous, the whole interrogation
then he calls his mom, and you swear you hear him beg his mother for her secret recipes
I'm convinced this man is the definition of golden retriever energy, he just cannot stop running around. one moment he's wrapping you in his favorite star wars blanky, and the next one, he passing the front door, on his way to get some herbal tea
when you're all cosy on your couch, with Luke and Leia Skywalker wrapped around your shoulders, and the hot cup of tea in your hands, Mickey finally allows himself to calm down
even more when you ask him to pick a movie to watch together
Robert "Bob" Floyd
he's actually the one who notices you getting sick. when you start blowing your nose more often or clearing your throat with a grimace on your face
he looks up on the internet for some natural tips to dissipate a cold and it usually works without you noticing anything
but if you get really sick, he's a bit lost. just like Mickey, he'd call his parents for advice and his mom would help him cook you some food you can keep.
he doesn't care if you wake him up in the middle of the night when you flush the toilet or when you stumble on the bathroom floor to empty your stomach, as long as he's by your side through it, he's really doesn't care
maybe hell get sick with all the kisses he steals from you but he just can't get enough of the red flush of your cheeks and especially the tip of your nose
Pops is the stage doorman for The Muppet Theatre. He's supposed to greet the guests when they first arrive -- though the nearsighted and forgetful Pops invariably needs to ask "Who're you?" in his slight country accent. Pops was first introduced during the fifth season of The Muppet Show, where he was featured in the Cold Open of each episode. This was a departure from the previous three seasons, which had featured Scooter talking to the guest stars in their dressing room. (No cold open was used before the opening titles during Season 1.) Outside of his expository function in establishing the guest star, Pops appeared three times onstage. First, in the episode 508, he took on the role of Geppetto to perform "Puppet Man" with Pinocchio. He then performed "Once in Love with Amy" with Fozzie in the UK Spot in episode 512. His last onstage appearance was in a sketch where Professor Salamander hypnotized him in episode 520. In The Muppets comic strip, he also took on the responsibilities of running the wardrobe and props departments. His most substantial role was as the owner of the Happiness Hotel in The Great Muppet Caper. He also appeared briefly at the end of the musical number "Scrooge" in The Muppet Christmas Carol. Although barely glimpsed in Muppet Treasure Island, he had a larger role in the video game version, where he runs a clothing store and, as part of a minigame/sidequest, will pay Hawkins if he protects his shop from pirates. After that, Pops wasn't seen for several years. On Muppets Tonight, Bobo the Bear filled the function of greeter, in addition to serving as security guard. However, when The Muppet Theatre re-opened in It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie, Pops was back on hand selling tickets. In "Kermit's Story," the first in Roger Langridge's four-issue run of The Muppet Show Comic Book, Pops was seen delivering the mail to the Muppets, including the letter to Kermit that sets off the main plot. He often makes appearances in the comic book. At the end of part 2 of The Muppet Show Comic Book: Muppet Mash, when Calistoga Cleo chooses Pops over Statler or Waldorf, Waldorf says "Well, we knew she preferred older guys", implying that Pops is older than Statler and Waldorf. Pops spoke for the first time since performer Jerry Nelson's retirement in an online behind-the-scenes video for the music video of OK Go's cover of "The Muppet Show Theme." Matt Vogel assumed the role at that point, and has spoken for him again in a 2013 Muppisode (with Gordon Ramsay) and in Muppets Most Wanted. The Shuttle by Frances Hodgson Burnett - I quite like it, it kinda goes into the (poor) english aristocracy marrying wealthy american girls and the differences in expectation of treatment and such.
A Bride's Story by Kaoru Mori - a manga series, don't know if your into that, but carefully researched, beautiful art (especially the textiles) of the time period and place, in areas around the silk road/russian steppes - Kazakhstan is one place I know the author visited.
The Ghost Bride - Yangsze Choo
Black Water Sister - Cho Zen
The Midwife's Apprentice - Karen Cushman
The House of the Scorpion - Nancy Farmer
Julie of the Wolves - Jean Craighead George
Blackbird House - Alice Hoffman
Geisha of Gion - Mineko Iwasaki - one of the main people Arthur Golden interviewed for his book. She wrote this to counteract his "white guyification" of what she told him.
Literary Studies for Rhetoric Classes - Bernard L. Jefferson - found this one at a thrift store I just really enjoyed a lot of the pieces in it.
The Story of My Life - Helen Keller
Sirena - Donna Jo Napoli
A Monster Calls - Patrick Ness
Binti - Nnedi Okorafor
What Happened to Lani Garver - Carol Plum-Ucci
The Color of Magic - Terry Pratchett
The Boxer Rebellion: The Dramatic Story of China's War on Foreigners that Shook the World in the Summer of 1900 - Diana Preston
Trudy's Promise - Marcia Preston - a very close look at one mother separated from her son when the Berlin Wall goes up.
Interview with the Vampire - Anne Rice - a very sad novel as it was written in response to when Anne Rice lost her child. A good close look at grief and loss and apathy.
Lovecraft Country - Matt Ruff - the show missed the point... the author wrote this inspired by when he and a black friend had been talking and he realized that because of skin color that while they occupied the same space, they lived in "different countries"
The Marvels - Brian Selznick
Salt to the Sea - Ruta Sepeteys
Koyal Dark, Mango Sweet - Kashmira Sheth
The Help - Kathryn Stockett
Children of Time - Adrian Tchaikovsky (or anything by him really)
The Ramsay Scallop - Frances Temple
Doomsday Book - Connie Willis - time-traveler finds herself back during the start of one of the sweeps of the black plague - it's pretty sad
Fifth Chinese Daughter - Jade Snow Wong

Y/n a girl in this ⬇️
Summary: Masterchef AU, Y/N is the youngest competitor in Masterchef 13 only 18 years old. It's Top 10, Everyone is starting to feel more home sick then ever. What if the Judges give the contestants a taste of home for a unexpected team challenge.
Words: 1.5k

The yellow-ish lights turned on one by one as the kitchen started to come to life. The M outside the kitchen lit on fire to symbolize that it's another day in the kitchen. The doors of Masterchef opened, a line of 10 excited people walk though the door and ran to their stations eager to start another day.
Y/n was the last one to head to her station with a big smile on her face.
" I can't believe I'm in top 10 of Masterchef! This is like a dream come true." Y/n said in the interview room.
As the home cooks got settled in the original, famous judges came in
Gordon Ramsay , Gram Elliot , and Joe Bastianich (JB)
How is everyone doing today! " Gordon said looking at the top 10. Everyone showed sings of being an a good mood today.
" Today you will pushed like you not been pushed this entire season. It's top 10 and you guys made the standers so high this season. " Gram said
" I hope its something I know, haha" y/n
Thought Nervously
" Today! You will be making" Gram pulled out an mystery boy swiftly under the podium and placed it on top. His hands touched the sides of the box and lifted it up.
pictures of Gram, JB, and Gordon with there families was shown. Everyone clapped loud and amusing smiles. Joe stepped up
" Today is all about family, you all have not seen them for awhile. What better way to motive you more is your family." JB said smile and then looked at Gordon
" That's right Joe! So we three invited your biggest supporters." Gordon said smile stretching by the second. Everyone went wild. Some show confusion not getting what is happening. Others covered mouths in shock. Especially Y/n.
Y/n hadn't seen her dad 2 months prior to going to Masterchef do to leaving for stranger things 4. So that was adding to not seeing him longer. Of course she was thankful for all her family members for supporting her dream but she just wanted her dad for a while.
" Jenna, your mother carol " " Charlie, your wife Diana " " Sam, your sister Amy " " Kat, your son jean " " Annabelle your husband Kurt " " Maze —-
As more family members filled the room the more excited Y/n were. Who was coming to see me?.
—
Everyone now was with a loved one as they called everyone's name. Everyone except Y/n. People started to send Y/n sympathy glances and even some hugs.
No one came for her. Your eyes started to water. She's trying to keep a head on her shoulders, But everyone can see that she is missing her family the most.
" Y/n " Gordon said looking at you sympathy. You looked him and wiped your eyes
" I know that you miss your family dearly but there fight got delayed by bad weather " You nodded weakly
" But don't worry we brought someone who we think you would rather be here with then anyone else " Gordon said all the sudden getting energetic and smiley . What is he talking about??. You started to get more confused then disappointed. Gordon then gestured to the door again.
" The man that my daughter Tilly has had a crush on since the first season of the incredible Netflix series "Stranger things " " You covered your mouth, starting to tear up even more.
" Your Wonderful Dad, Joe Kerry! " Gordon said.
Tears started to run down your face as you see a familiar face smiling brightly at you with glossy eyes as well. You ran to the door, he put his arms out now have few tears streaming down his face. As you got to him you both hug each other so hard that it was like the last time you ever see each other again.
" Dad.. " Y/n said now crying holding onto him. You felt tears fall on your clothes. You pull away from him to look up at him.
" I missed you so much honey.... like a lot " Joe said chuckling looking back at you. He then picked you up, you laughed as he took you back to your station smiling the whole way. He put you down and put an arm around you.
" Now let's get to the serious stuff. Today you will be making a dish that is inspired by your family. Don't be fooled because today.....is just a elimination challenge " Gordon said serious. Y/n mind started to run with thoughts of dishes she could do. You felt your dads grip tightened. He went down to her ear
" Win or lose I'm so incredibly proud of you " Joe said kissing your head lovingly.
" Families would you please head up to the balcony " Gordon jested to the balcony. Joe hugs y/n one more time and kissed her cheek. He started to head to the stairs with everyone else. He goes to the rails and jogs to a spot where there is a clear view of your station.
" You will create a dish inspired by your family and elevate it into a Masterchef worthy dish " Gram said
" Your time starts... " some people started to get into a running position
.
.
.
" NOW!! "
Everyone starts running while they're family cheers them on.Y/n runs to the ingredients and starts putting them in her basket
" My favorite memory is when my Dad took me on set of stranger things 3 and he was wearing his *giggles* sailor outfit and we ate ice cream off set together. We had a daddy & daughter day" Y/n said in the interview
Everyone ran back to their stations with their ingredients, Starting to cook.
After a while the judges started to come around. Gram walked over to y/n
" Hey Y/n"
"Hello chef "
"So what you making to day?"
" I'm going baker today and I am doing a homemade butter scotch and pecan ice cream with a dark chocolate brownie and a berry Cooley "
" Woah!, I don't think we have ever seen you bake before"
" well todays the first for you guys then ☺️"
Gram then walks away and tells the other judges what your doing. They both had impressed looks on their faces.
" Your doing great honey! Eyes on the prize" Joe shouted from the balcony with a big smile on his face. He can't believe this was his baby girl, he's so proud.
" 2 minutes Left!! Everyone should be platting "
Now chaos rolls over the kitchen. Food flying everywhere, judges screaming the time, Families screaming for there loved one, and people running around.
.
" Hands up! "
Everyone did just that. Some people don't look happy with there dishes but other were happy. Especially Y/n. It's exactly what she wanted to honor her and her father's memories. After a few people got mixed reviews the more nervous you were getting. Was this be enough it get me to top 9? With an ice cream.
" Y/n." This broke you out of your thoughts and quickly go to the podium and place your dish down. Not long after you could hear your father clapping loudly for you.
" So! Y/n this is the first time I have ever seen you make a dessert" Gordon said with a smile. That eases your nerves a little.
" yeah, I wanted to show I wasn't a one trick pony that only cook savory "
" what is it? And what is it called?"
" I call it a Scope of Kerry, it's a homemade butter scotch and pecan ice cream with a dark chocolate brownie and a berry Cooley "
" well, visually it looks Amazing "
" Thank you chef "
Gordon takes a spoonful and eats it. He looks at you not saying a word like he did with the other competitors. Your nerves started to get to much to handle. He then just walks away. Your eyes widen, was it really that bad?!. Was it to safe? Gram then went up and tried it, nodding he went back to the other judges. You went back to your station with a forced lip tight smile. Your eyes started to water again, looking down in shame.
Joe just wanted to run down there, hold you, tell you that no matter what you'll will be a winner in his eyes. Tell you that he loves more then life itself. More people went up some got more compliments then others. Finally it was time.
" The person that will advance Top 9 and will have an advantage next elimination challenge is................... Y/N!!"
Everyone irritated into loud cheers, happy for the teen girl. You could believe it, you got it. You started to jump around in joy like a crazy person but Joe wasn't any better. He was like an animal. Jumping around on the balcony so much that it could break. Shooting your name in happiness. Without wasting a second Joe ran down the stairs and practically flew to your station. He spun you around giving you one of his famous massive bear hugs. You may have not won MasterChef yet, but you have truly won over the judges another day.

It wouldn't be New Year's Eve without "Auld Lang Syne"—and we have legendary Scottish poet Robert Burns to thank for it. He wrote the poem and fine-tuned the melody for the traditional song. His original manuscript is seen here up for auction. Photograph By Jeff J. Mitchell, Getty Images
Why We Sing ‘Auld Lang Syne’ on New Year’s Eve
The Iconic Song Became a Staple at the Stroke of Midnight with a Little help from 18th Century Poet Robert Burns and the Scottish Diaspora.
— By Parissa Djang I December 27, 2023
If New Year’s Eve had an official carol, it would easily be “Auld Lang Syne.” Every year, just after the clock strikes midnight, people around the world join hands and sing this beloved song.
Why is “Auld Lang Syne” a New Year’s tradition? From its beginnings as an 18th-Century Scottish Poem to its Iconic Status today, “Auld Lang Syne” captures the spirit of the holiday.
A Scottish Poem
The song is actually a poem penned by Robert Burns in 1788. Traditionally considered Scotland’s National Poet, Burns stirred the Country’s National consciousness by writing in the dying out Scots language. In English, auld lang syne roughly means “times long past.” Fittingly, the song tells of old friends meeting after time apart.

Although Burns’ version is the one that we know today, there were earlier versions of the poem, including Allan Ramsay’s from 1724. Burns explained his version was indeed inspired by another. As he claimed to music publisher George Thomson in September 1793, “I took it down from an old man’s singing.”
Burns was not satisfied with his version of the poem’s original tune, dismissing it as “mediocre.” So between 1799 and 1801, Thomson found and fine-tuned a different melody for the song. It’s the one we still sing today.
A Song For The Year’s End
Burns’ song soon found a home in an annual Scottish tradition: Hogmanay. A blend of Norse and Gaelic customs, the holiday celebrates the last day of the year.
For centuries, Hogmanay, not Christmas, reigned as the biggest winter holiday in Scotland. After all, the Church of Scotland, the country’s official church, had banned the celebration of Christmas in 1640, since it felt the holiday was not Protestant enough.
Unable to make merry at Christmastime, people embraced Hogmanay instead. During Hogmanay, Scottish men, women, and children exchanged gifts and visited friends and neighbors to welcome the new year.

Another Hogmanay tradition? Singing. Some songs—such as “A Guid New Year to ane a’ A’”—were widely recognized. Others were created by families or local communities.
With its emphasis on friendship, reminiscence, and parting, Burns’ “Auld Lang Syne” expressed the essence of Hogmanay: bidding adieu to one year so another could begin.
A New Year’s Tradition
As Scotspeople emigrated in the 19th century, they brought their Hogmanay traditions with them around the world—including “Auld Lang Syne.”
The song soon became a fixture in New Year’s Eve celebrations in the United States. Jazz band Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians played it during a New Year’s Eve radio broadcast in 1929. It was a hit—and “Auld Lang Syne” remained a midnight staple of the band’s annual New Year’s Eve show, which aired on radio and eventually television every year until 1976. The show’s success popularized “Auld Lang Syne” as the quintessential New Year’s song across the country.

As Life reported on December 17, 1965, “Should [Lombardo] and his Royal Canadians fail to play ‘Auld Lang Syne’ at midnight on New Year’s Eve […], a deep uneasiness would run through a large segment of the American populace—a conviction that, despite the evidence on every calendar, the new year had not really arrived.”
However, musicologist M.J. Grant emphasizes in her book Auld Lang Syne: A Song and Its Culture that at the time the song “was already firmly established in many communities, quite possibly beginning in the Scottish diaspora.”
So the tradition of playing “Auld Lang Syne” on New Year’s may have not started with Lombardo, but his band ushered in a new beginning for a song that honors the past while welcoming the dawn of a new day.
What an awesome night I had last at Woodspring Masonic Lodge 8791 that meet in the Yatton Temple here in the Province of Somersetshire 💪🙏
I was a personal guest of my dear friend WBro MB, alas he had been taken ill and did not make the lodge, so the video is a get well soon and Merry Christmas 🎅 from myself and the Woodspring boys, 🙏🤠
I was always made to feel so welcome, the first degree ceramony was first class and the WM lead his team magnificently, it was so nice to see so many light blues and even FD and FC masons taking part who all did brilliantly, I really enjoyed that ceramony it all had such a wonderful Festive Brotherhood feeling about it 🙏🎅💪
It was nice not having to do anything or so I thought until I felt the DC hand on my shoulder at the festive board or after meeting as it's known, GULP!!!! could I do the return to the visitors toast at literally a moment's notice, now that's nothing unusual in freemasonry now is it brethren 💪😂
I thanked WBro AW for the way he proposed the toast to us visitors and the way the brethren received the toast, I then went about my festive return to the visitors toast that brought some amusement and laughter with a very true masonic tale of a Christmas visit to Peace lodge a few years ago, I did give a big shout out to our Adair Club and The Holy Royal and pointed brethren to WBro RA who is the HRA Rep, I see this morning two of the light blues from last night have been added to the watts app Adair Club so top drawer muckers enjoy 🙏🤠💪
The festive board or after meeting, almost last minute the chef called in sick so no food for a festive board? In true Woodspring style the brethren sprang into style, the local fish and chip shop came to the rescue as it was a fish on a Friday day, A mighty portion of Fish and Chips all round, I was glad of this I am bored with Christmas turkey dinners, the boys also laid on a spread of sweets that Gordon Ramsay's restaurant would be proud of as well as coffee and festive after eight mints etc, stick a fork in me I am done I could barely move 💪
Speeches & toasts were excellent & inspirational, the raffle and alms raised a good deal of money for charity and local food banks, a fantastic Carol Service 🙏 we were all in fine voice lol 🤣 the 12 days of Christmas Woodspring style was fantastic and I must say The Brethren of table 5 were by far the best lol 🤣🙈🙉🙊🎅
I cannot urge all Men and indeed Women to consider becoming a Freemason if charity is at your core and you want to be the best version of yourself you can be SMIB 🙏
