Colombia`s Magic: Explore 10 Captivating Destinations That Will Enchant You

i’m so in love that i might stop breathing.
i want to brainwash you into loving me forever, i want to transport you to somewhere the culture’s clever, confess my truth in swooping, sloping, cursive letters.
Eddie Munson is signed to a big-name label, one that monitors every move their artists make. The label practically runs half of LA, with so many artists under contract that Eddie’s not really sure how they can even keep track, let alone micro-manage every single one of them. But somehow they do it.
Eddie’s in the hard rock and metal division. Very rarely does he have to cross paths with artists outside of his genre. It’s not really an issue. It’s not like he’s going to collaborate with some bubblegum pink pop princess.
But then the label decides that they need to cross-market some of their artists. They’ve got lots of big names and Eddie’s on tour for his fourth studio album. He’s established, already done a world tour that was so successful the label had wanted to send him back out almost immediately, but he’d pushed back, asking for some time to write. So it’s been two years, but he’s written some of his best songs to date and the arenas are selling out.
Eddie’s so successful that the label decides that they’re going to pair him with some new up-and-coming singer-songwriter duo. The label wants at least one song, but hopes are high that Eddie will take them out as an opener for the last leg of the tour. Eddie’s given their EP a listen; he can’t really imagine that his demographic will ever overlap with theirs, but if this it what the label wants, then who is he to deny them?
It’s a sunny afternoon in LA when Eddie meets Steve Harrington and Robin Buckley at his favorite coffee shop downtown. It’s a safe place for celebrities, with a hidden back entrance and tinted windows, so he’s fairly certain they won’t be caught out together. Eddie’s ordered some lavender honey oat milk latte, something he would never admit to liking in a million years, but it tastes so good he makes the trip here at least three times a week. He’s sitting in a secluded corner, far enough from the windows that he won’t feel nervous, and he’s still got his sunglasses on, just in case.
He spots Robin and Steve almost immediately. They’re hard to miss, both beautiful and sun-kissed, smiling wide as they bicker before they both stop to look around the space.
“Hi!” Robin exclaims when she spots him, rushing over to his table. She grabs his hand between both of hers before he’s even had the chance to offer it to her and pumps it up and down a few times, like they’re shaking hands.
“Rob,” Steve mutters, placing a hand on her shoulder. Then, he turns his blinding smile on Eddie. Eddie had never believed in that whole ‘heart skipping a beat’ thing before but… he feels something happening in that region. “Sorry about her, she’s, like, a huge fan.” He offers his own hand to Eddie and they shake, the brush of skin on skin leaving Eddie just a little breathless, before Steve pulls out a chair and drops into it.
“Ugh, don’t make me sound like some creepy stalker, dingus.” Robin puts her hand on her hips. “What do you want?”
“Uh,” Steve squints at the menu before glancing down at the cup Eddie’s got between his hands. “What’d you get?” He directs the question at Eddie. Eddie tells him, only a little sheepish about it, and Steve smiles again. Eddie’s skin starts to feel itchy, too tight at his collarbones. “That sounds good. I’ll have that,” he tells Robin and she turns to head toward the counter, mumbling about having to order girly drinks.
Once they’re alone, Eddie slides his sunglasses off his face and up into his hair. He clears his throat before looking up into Steve’s face. Their eyes meet and something… happens. Something electric, something pulled taut between them. Eddie feels it and he’s pretty sure Steve does, too, judging by the way his lips part and his tongue darts out to wet them, quick and nervous. Eddie can’t stop staring. Neither can Steve.
Robin comes back with her hands full and glances between them. “Everything alright?” She asks slowly, cautiously, and their gazes finally snap away from each other, a blush rising in Steve’s cheeks.
Steve looks back into Eddie’s eyes like he just can’t help himself. Like he wouldn’t want to look anywhere else. “Yeah,” he says smiling. “Everything’s great.”
~*~
Eddie agrees to take them out on tour with him. The minute he saw Steve Harrington in the flesh, he knew he’d be taking them, but Robin turns out to be pretty cool too. He warns them that his fans can be pretty intense, that he can’t imagine they’ll be all that pleased with the kind of music the duo plays, but Robin and Steve assure him that they’re really just looking for some tour experience more than anything else. They’ll figure out the songwriting on the road, collaborate in a way that will bridge the gap between their style and Eddie’s.
When he gets home later that night, after a detour back to the label’s offices, Eddie can’t help but insta-stalk. He looks up Robin’s page first, upholding the pretense of ‘market research’ even in the privacy of his own mind. Most of her pictures include Steve and so it’s easy to be led away to Steve’s profile. It’s a natural progression. Totally normal.
Steve is… extremely cute. That’s usually not a word that Eddie would apply to someone he’s interested in—he tends to prefer the leather and chains variety much more than the sugary sweet type—but for some reason Eddie’s left breathless this time. He scrolls down Steve’s page, sees a picture of him with a herd of kids climbing on his back, another of him and Robin in matching sailor costumes. He hits the follow button without giving it too much thought and then slides back to his own page. Eddie is notoriously private, Instagram page consisting of only professional and promotional shots of him on tour with his band or in the studio recording. It’s not that Eddie is hiding anything, but he knows enough to know that the more you open up, the more that can be taken from you. He knows enough to know that the metal community can be somewhat closed-minded about some things, so he prefers to hide his personal life away, to keep some things precious and secret.
He wonders what Steve would think of his page, if he were to scroll through it. He wonders what it would be like to be open and honest about his personal life, about loving someone. What it would be like to not have to worry about losing fans, losing sales, losing bookings. To not worry about what the public would think of him.
He sighs and places his phone face down on his bedside table before turning out the light and drifting off to sleep.
~*~
Steve and Robin have been on tour with Eddie for two months and Eddie is almost positive that he’s falling in love with Steve. It was one thing to listen to Steve sing on their EP. It’s something totally different to watch Steve perform, to see his fingers slide up and down his guitar, the notes and his voice melancholy sweet. Eddie thinks almost anyone would fall in love with Steve if they’d just pay attention.
They haven’t done anything. Nothing has happened. But the green rooms and the tour busses have been full of lingering looks and soft brushes of skin. He’s pretty sure that Robin is close to saying something, clearly irritated by their pining. But Eddie’s still unsure. He knows it’s a lot, being on tour and in close quarters for the first time. It’s complicated and he doesn’t want to jeopardize Steve’s first big break. He doesn’t want to distract him. It’s easy to get caught up on tour, to mistake proximity for real feelings. It had happened to Eddie before; he didn’t want it to happen to Steve now.
Because this is a big deal, for Robin and Steve. Eddie had been unsure about taking them on, but, surprisingly, Eddie’s fans had embraced the duo. Their songwriting methods had complimented each other in a way Eddie hasn’t experienced since he first started writing with Gareth and the three of them had written five songs together already. Eddie would pull them both onstage halfway through his set to perform at least two of them and then again for one during the encore. The crowd went wild every time.
It’s the last night of tour when the space between them finally snaps in two. It’s the encore, they’re playing Eddie’s favorite of the five songs they’ve written together. They’ve made it through the complicated bridge, the final chorus, and now they’re closing out the last verse. The energy between Steve and Eddie practically crackles, almost visible under the harsh arena lights. Adrenaline is pumping, making Eddie feel invincible, and he can tell that Steve feels it too by the way he smiles across the stage at him. The final notes ring out and Eddie can’t help himself. He grabs for the strap of Steve’s guitar and pulls. Steve falls into Eddie’s chest, laughing, eyebrows raised, and Eddie can’t even think. His lips crash into Steve’s and it’s magical. Better than Eddie ever even dreamed it would be.
There’s a roaring in his ears as Eddie pulls back, reluctant. Steve’s eyes are still closed and he tries to follow Eddie’s mouth with his own, but Eddie laughs and gives him a little shake. Eddie glances around and realizes that the roaring he’d heard was the crowd going absolutely wild, screaming and cheering and clapping. Eddie looks back at Steve, who’s looking just a little dazed, blush on his cheeks and dopey smile on his lips. Robin’s screaming into her microphone, jumping up and down, egging the crowd on. Steve looks around the arena, still smiling, before looking back at Eddie and mouthing something in his direction. It’s too loud, Eddie can’t hear him over the crowd, so he shakes his head just a little. Steve tries again but Eddie still can’t hear him, so he raises his microphone to his lips.
“Finally,” Steve practically shouts, voice ringing out across the cavernous space. “Thought you’d never take the hint.”
All Eddie can do is laugh and pull Steve in for another kiss as the crowd continues cheering.
@grtwdsmwhr gave me “i want to brainwash you into loving me forever” and this is what I came up with i guess

Traveling the most beautiful places this 2024:
“Visit to Europe (Vienna)"
Tumblr media
In my opinion, traveling is the most interesting thing that is liked by almost half of the people on Earth. Traveling is an adventure that broadens horizons, opens minds and enriches lives. It makes the person happy and fresh of any age, whether it’s about exploring exotic destinations, immersing oneself in different countries and cultures, or simply seeking relaxation in nature and embrace.
Traveling to different countries in a very short time is very difficult to memorize, and making all the events perfectly fully organized or managed is a big task, but having something that makes us memorize about our events in advance is a big support, like tinyti.me website makes this problem easier in today's world by making their website available for us to create events which help in perfect management.
I think Vienna is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. The historic core of the city is a massive UNESCO Heritage Site brimming with incredible museums, beautiful galleries, and sprawling Baroque palaces.
The city is a history buff’s dream. There’s an incredible café culture, a nearby wine region, tons of amazing eateries, awesome live music (including world-class opera), and much more.
I’ve been coming here for years and I never get tired of visiting. Technically speaking I love the city so much that I used to run tours here!
Naturally, I’ve stayed at countless hotels during my visits. Here’s my list of the best hotels in Vienna:
1. Hotel-Pension Wild
This two-star hotel is one of the few affordable lodgings in the city center. It has simple but bright rooms that feature comfortable beds, plenty of space, and large windows that let in a lot of natural light. The design is a bit dated (the carpeted rooms don’t look particularly stylish) but everything is clean and functional. Rooms include basic amenities like a flatscreen TV, desk, and free Wi-Fi. The bathrooms are pretty small, but they’re clean and the showers have good water pressure. The hotel offers a hearty continental breakfast and the owner is friendly and welcoming. If you’re on a tight budget, there are small, no-frills single rooms with a shared bathroom available as well.
2. Hotel Domizil
This boutique four-star hotel has small, clean rooms with décor that makes you feel like you’re back in Vienna’s imperial past. The rooms have plenty of light and lots of antique touches, such as wooden desks and tables, and upholstered armchairs. Rooms also have free Wi-Fi, a flatscreen TV, and a coffee/tea maker. The bathrooms, while not particularly fashionable (the tiles are kind of ugly), are very spacious and the showers have excellent water pressure. The breakfast, which can be included in the price, has tons of variety, including lots of different fresh breads and cheeses.
Located in the city center, I think this is one of the best value places to stay if you want to be in the center of it all.
3. Hotel Mozart
One of the few hotels in the Rossau neighborhood (just northwest of the city center), this budget-friendly three-star hotel boasts large rooms with lots of natural light. Rooms are spacious and decorated in light colors and feature hardwood or parquet floors. There are lots of other wooden touches too, such as desks/tables, and large wooden headboards. Free Wi-Fi is included, as is a flatscreen TV and AC (a must if you’re visiting in the summer). Some rooms include coffee machines. The hotel boasts a filling breakfast spread each morning with lots of fresh fruit and pastries. There’s also a bar on-site and the staff are always happy to share their tips and advice too.
4. Hotel Johann Strauss
Located in the Wieden neighborhood, this stylish four-star hotel is named after the eponymous 19th-century Austrian composer. The hotel is set in a historic Art Nouveau building that’s been entirely renovated, with rooms that have lots of natural light and a soft, welcoming color palette. Rooms include a flatscreen TV, minibar, coffee/tea maker, desk, and sofa. I really like that there’s a lot of art around the property, including in the rooms (naturally, much of the art is music centered). The tiled bathrooms are huge, with lots of light and great water pressure. I especially like that the breakfast buffet is enormous and features a lot of variety. The staff is exceptionally friendly too and happy to help you make the most of your stay.
5. Hotel Am Konzerthaus Vienna
Located in Landstrasse near the iconic Belvedere Palace, this luxe four-star hotel feels more like a five-star property. It has a chic lobby and large, bright rooms with super comfy beds. Everything is fashionable and trendy, with lots of rich colors from a darker palette. The large bathrooms are bedecked with dark tiles and are well lit, featuring plush bathrobes and relaxing rain showers. Rooms also include a flatscreen TV, desk, and coffee/tea maker. The breakfast buffet is huge and has a lot of options, but I especially love that the on-site restaurant has a Michelin star (it does amazing modern takes on traditional Austrian dishes).
The hotel is a perfect choice for travelers who want some luxury without breaking the bank.
6. The Ritz-Carlton Vienna
This is arguably the fanciest hotel in town. A five-star property right in the heart of the city, this hotel is spread across four historic palaces (yes, actual palaces). While the hotel feels palatial, it has understated décor with a chic minimalist design (think lots of white space with touches of color or artwork). The marble bathrooms are huge and the showers have perfect water pressure. The rooms are also massive and have big, comfy beds (as well as desks, AC, sofas, and electric kettles).
There’s also a gigantic breakfast buffet offered each morning and a free glass of champagne when you check in. The hotel also has a pool that plays music underwater, a fitness center, sauna, steam room, and three different spas on-site. In short, it’s the pinnacle of luxury in the city and the best choice for travelers looking to splurge on an elegant stay.
I hope this blog helps you a lot when traveling next time to Europe (Vienna), So, whether you're embarking on a solo adventure, a family vacation, or a romantic getaway, This spirit of travel guides you on a journey of exploration, discovery, and adventure.

today is canada day, so here are some canadian things that i think the bau members would enjoy
hotch would love tim hortons. he wishes they had it in the states. he'd love going on a timmies run through the drive thru on the way to work. he'd love the ubiquity of tim hortons. not quite on every street corner, but pretty darn close. he would enjoy cheap, decently good coffee, and it would be so practical. his turn to bring snacks for jack's soccer tournament? box of timbits for the kids and one of those portable coffee things for the grown-ups. he doesn't know what to get someone as a gift for christmas/birthday/promotion at work? tims gift card
rossi would love canadian wines. obviously, he loves italian wine first and foremost, but he'd enjoy a good niagara region or okanagan valley wine. he'd love to go on a getaway to niagara-on-the-lake and spend the days doing winery tours, playing golf, and not answering his phone. i think he would also love roots. he'd never wear it outside the house, but he would love some good quality roots sweatpants, sweater, and wool socks
jj would love canadian snacks that aren't sold in the states. she always forgets to eat real meals when she's working, so she keeps one of the drawers of her desk stuffed with snacks. if she went to canada, she'd buy so many snacks to stock her desk with. ketchup chips, all dressed chips, coffee crisp, smarties (the canadian kind, not the american kind - we call those rockets), butter tarts, nanaimo bars. she'd find ketchup-flavoured cheetos at the store and buy so many bags of them. she'd totally get stopped at the border for accidentally trying to smuggle kinder surprise eggs into the us
emily would love québecois and northern ontario french. she learned french in france with parisian teachers, which is completely different from the way french is spoken in québec and northern ontario (which are also different from each other), both in terms of accent and vocabulary. i think she'd love trying to understand their accents and picking up new words (mostly things like tabarnak, câlice, etc)
in my mind, reid has a total sweet tooth, so i think he'd love all things maple. maple cookies, maple fudge, maple candies, maple lollipops. i forget what it's called in english, but his favourite thing would be tire d'érable. maple taffy? the thing where you pour hot maple syrup on snow and then put it on a popsicle stick and eat it. he'd have maple candies living in his pockets and at the bottom of his messenger bag for ages
derek would love small-town ontario craft breweries. obviously craft beer exists outside of canada, but literally every small town in ontario has a craft brewery or two. it's like a big thing. my dad's a beer guy and he takes detours driving places to stop at his favourite craft breweries or to go to a new one. i feel like derek's the kind of guy who enjoys cracking open a cold one after a long day of flipping houses, so he'd enjoy getting a two-four of different kinds of craft beer from a local brewery and stocking his fridge
i tried so hard to think of one thing penelope would love, but honestly i think she would love everything. she'd come back from a trip to canada with so many souvenirs. a roots toque, a bottle of real canadian maple syrup, several snacks that aren't sold in the states, handmade moccasins, a mug with indigenous artwork, and a little bobblehead moose dressed as a mountie for her desk

Any cute date recommendations? Either distance or in person?
You ask and we shall deliver! Cute date ideas incoming 💕
In-person date ideas
Find a theme you're both interested in and go to a museum/exhibition (i.e. if you're both into Star Wars, find a SW exhibition; or if you're both into dinosaurs, find a museum that displays dinosaur bones)
Do the cliche dates (because they really work!) - coffee date, dinner date, bubble tea date, movie night, etc.
Find a park/forest/green area you've never been to and go for a walk together
Try a class or workshop together
Stay in. A date can be as simple as that. The act of choosing to spend intimate (not necessarily sexy wink-wink), one on one time together can be a date too.
Find the weirdest museum/exhibition and go together. Wash it down with a coffee afterwards to discuss what you've witnessed
See a play or a concert together
Get involved in each other's hobbies
Google 'date ideas checklist', find one you both like and do all those dates
Celebrate birthdays, holidays, achievements together privately
Set up a date for sexual intimacy (or just physical intimacy if you're ace)
Long distance date ideas
Have dinner together on a video call
Same as above, but order food for each other
Play video games together while on a call (even better if you're playing together online)
Same as above, except set up a date together in-game (i.e. exploring a region together, completing missions together)
Movie night: watch Netflix, Disney+ or YouTube together
Get involved in each other's hobbies: a bit more difficult with distance, but not impossible (get creative, take pictures and videos to share with each other later, call each other even if you're silent because i.e. you're trying to get into meditation or yoga)
Try Dovey Dates (read our review here)
Go for a walk separately while calling each other
Attend an online event together (i.e. a class, a seminar, etc) and then call each other afterwards to talk about it
Take a virtual museum tour together
Celebrate birthdays, holidays, achievements together privately on video call
Plan a meeting, or if you've already got one coming up, plan a date for that time you'll spend together
Design each other postcards on TouchNote while video calling (and send it to each other!)

Ready To Hope
1200 Words for 1200 Followers #2
A/N: Hi friends! Welcome to the 12-A-Palooza! This event is my way of saying thank you for sticking with me. Your support and kindness toward me and my writing is out of this world and I’m grateful for every last one of you! Rolling right along with the second piece - which is set in the same AU as Every Color Illuminates. This “color soulmates” trope has been really fun to play with, so it might be pretty easy to convince me to write more for them ;)
Warnings: Talk of past relationships, Teresa makes a tiny cameo
Requested by: @alraedesigns - Song: Shake It Out - Character Choice: Marcus Pike (Thank you so much for sending this, Alex! I know you love this sweet cinnamon roll man, so I hope you enjoy the continuation of this AU! 💚)
Summary: When Marcus contacts a renowned Art Gallery in hopes that a Color Ambassador can help him with some details for a case, he’s reminded of the fact that asking for help to see color hasn’t always worked out for him in the past. This time, though, things will be different.
Tumblr media
“This might be a shot in the dark, but-” Marcus clamped his phone between his ear and shoulder so that he had both hands free to pay the coffee vendor. Mouthing a ‘thank you’ to the man, he took his beverage, dropping his change in the tip jar. “You don’t have a Graysight CA who can walk me through the exhibit, do you?”
He held his breath and readjusted the phone, gripping it with his right hand. I hope she says y-
“We do.” Michelle, the director of the National Gallery of Art responded. “Actually, our best Color Ambassador sees in Graysight. And you’re in luck, Agent Pike, because she’s here today.”
Marcus released his held breath in a relieved sigh, lips lifting into a smile. Amazing. “That’s great.”
Admitting that he - the regional head of the FBI’s Art Crimes division - needed a CA always gave Marcus a hint of anxiety. It wasn’t because he was embarrassed that he hadn’t found his match yet. It was because he knew that people made assumptions about him based on his position, and that sometimes when they found out that he couldn’t see in color, their assumptions turned to doubt in his ability to do his job. But here was a fellow professional within the art community telling him that the best person for the task at hand was someone just like him.
Clearing his throat, Marcus tilted his left hand, careful not to spill his coffee, so he could read the time on his wristwatch. It was just after 11. No time like the present, right? “Would it be too much trouble to meet with them this morning? I can be there in half an hour.”
“Of course not, Agent, anything we can do to help. There’s a group tour finishing with that section of the Gallery now, but once they’re done I’ll rope off the wing so that you won’t be disturbed while you’re here.”
She excused herself then, telling him that she needed to go speak with the CA who would be guiding him. Marcus thanked her and hung up the phone, sliding it into his jacket pocket. He let out another sigh, this one heftier and more satisfying as it left his lungs.
Finally, a break in this case that goes my way.
Heading away from the coffee cart and toward where his car was parked, he tried to keep the next thought from materializing. He failed.
It’s not just this case that I haven’t caught a break in. It’s been… everything.
Though it had been nearly eight months since he’d left Texas, the way things ended between him and Teresa still stung when he thought about it. The sting was made worse by the fact that if their roles were swapped, she wouldn’t need a CA to assist on the case, because she had matched and had lived with color for years.
Jane had been the one to let the spectrum into her life. It had given Marcus pause at first, when she told him. But Teresa had insisted that it was simply because they were such good friends - that they connected on a level that was purely platonic. Hers hadn’t been one of those sudden, blinding explosions of color that some people experienced, but a steady glow as she got to know the man. That, along with the fact that Jane had been able to see color before meeting Teresa - his match had been his first wife - had been enough to convince Marcus that a serious relationship with her was possible.
Not everyone matched with their partner. He knew that. It didn’t mean a relationship was doomed.
There were other signs though. He frowned as he sipped his coffee. Other things I ignored.
Like the time he asked Teresa to describe the colors of a sunset they watched together . “I don’t know, Marcus.” She looked at him as if he’d asked her to solve a complex mathematical equation instead of helping him to understand the world around him. “It’s orange.”
“Yeah,” he’d said, one arm wrapped around her to bring her closer to his side, his lips landing near her temple. “But what does that mean? What does it make you feel?”
She’d only stared at him, shaking her head. “Warm, I guess? I don’t know, I can’t explain it. Hopefully someday you’ll be able to see for yourself.”
That had been the end of that conversation. Marcus never tried to get her to describe colors to him again. He told himself that he didn’t want to put her on the spot. But if he was being honest, it was because he didn’t want to think about what it meant that she wasn’t even willing to try.
But I can’t think about that right now. I need to… Need to think about this case. And I need to let go of what happened in Texas if I want to have any hope of finding something real.
Reaching his car, he got in and entered the address of the Gallery into his GPS. The automated voice and the gray arrow on the screen helped him concentrate, and before long he was pulling into the visitor parking lot.
Alright, Pike. He took a long swig of his coffee to drain it, setting the empty cup - one that he was told was brown with green stripes but only saw as light gray with darker gray lines - into the holder in the center console. Time to focus.
As promised, Michelle had roped off the Rothko exhibit, a security guard leading him there after Marcus showed the man his badge. As he waited in the room, he walked around and looked closely at the various color-blocked paintings on display - squares and lines and rectangles that all appeared to be in grayscale.
I can’t even imagine what it would be like to see these. Really see them.
Before he could get too lost in his fantasy, he heard a pair of footsteps getting closer. Turning, he saw you and began closing the distance.
“Agent Marcus Pike,” he introduced himself, holding his hand out to you with a smile.
You returned the smile and the introduction, fingers wrapping around his hand to bring your palms together. The moment you did, the room erupted in hues he didn’t have names for. The paintings that surrounded him seemed to glow, their colors radiating from the frames to shine directly on you. He sucked in a breath, a rush of emotion coursing through his chest.
I… I can see. It’s her.
He hadn’t taken his eyes off of you. Not even to glance around at the heavily saturated works he was there to study.
“Marcus?” Your voice came out as a whisper, and he saw the wonder in your expression, noticed the way that your breath came quickly and unevenly. He noticed the way that he felt relaxed and calm as blue and green shimmered in the corners of his vision and a soft tingle spread along his spine. “I… I don’t think you need me to-”
“No. I do.” He said your name again, smiling around it, letting it roll off his tongue. “I definitely do.”
.

Understanding other countries requires more than studying them from afar. This fundamental fact is hardly news. In the 18th and 19th centuries, young people conducted a grand tour of other countries to get to know them better (and, by extension, their own countries). Over the past few decades, all manner of universities have launched semester-abroad programs that make such learning extremely easy.
But increasingly, young Americans with foreign-policy and national-security ambitions are eschewing interaction with foreign countries and even foreign individuals. They want security clearances, and they know that any foreign exposure will complicate matters. This intellectual isolationism risks severely harming U.S. foreign and security policy—just when an acceleratingly unstable world needs able U.S. officials.
Understanding other countries is a daunting and sometimes humbling experience. For the most part, the first step involves attempting to communicate in a foreign language. One can improve one’s abilities by watching movies and television from the countries in question, or by reading newspapers or listening to the radio.
As a teenager, I improved my German by reading Bild-Zeitung whenever I got access to it (Bild was easier reading than Der Spiegel and Die Zeit, to which I later graduated). Later on, I worked on my Italian by watching Italian movies without subtitles. To this day, I regularly listen to RAI (Italian radio), both to keep myself informed and to improve my linguistic abilities.
But even if one does speak the desired foreign language well, one can only understand the country in which it’s spoken by living there for an extended period of time. It involves learning that country’s culture and cultural references, and preferably understanding its society and politics. “I don’t drink coffee, I take tea, my dear,” Sting sang in Alien in New York. But when in Rome, do as the Romans do. Or try, at least.
As an expat, one will always be in the minority. Frequently, one won’t get cultural references, or one will misunderstand them. That has happened to me countless times ever since I moved abroad in my first year of university (I’ve remained abroad ever since). It’s frequently humiliating and exasperating, though it is, of course, often enormously educational. And learning a bit of humility is not a bad side benefit of getting to know another country.
Starting in the late 1600s, young Europeans of means considered the grand tour a must in their civic education, and subsequent generations have also appreciated the value of interacting with other countries. The United States’ Gen Z appreciates it too. Indeed, many of the best and brightest among America’s Gen Z want to make a career out of foreign affairs and international security. They want it so much that they map out their next steps at an early stage. Those steps include applying to the finest U.S. graduate programs in foreign affairs and national security.
Once they’ve arrived in these fine institutions of higher learning, the world is their oyster, right? Not so much. In recent months, I’ve been hearing more and more from professors of international affairs that their students are so focused on getting security clearances for their hoped-for government jobs that they’re forgoing foreign contacts. They’re opting out of study-abroad opportunities and avoiding friendships with foreign students.
Princeton undergraduates’ choices of what field to major in give a good indication of ambitious college students’ thinking. In 2022, the university’s six regional concentrations—which include German, French and Italian, and East Asian Studies—were among the school’s 10 least popular concentrations, the Daily Princetonian reported.
For the third year running, the most popular concentrations were computer science, the School of Public and International Affairs, economics, and operations research and financial engineering. Last academic year (the most recent available), meanwhile, Princeton had a total of one Master’s student in German, two in Slavic languages, four in French and Italian, and six in East Asian Studies. It had no Master’s students in Spanish and Portuguese.
Last fall, George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs, which produces “leading experts in business, security, diplomacy, public service, development, conflict resolution, public health, and other fields,” ended its Master’s in European and Eurasian Studies.
During the Cold War, Washington took knowledge of other countries extremely seriously. Universities offered area studies, in which students specialized in, yes, a specific area of the world—and that included learning not just the relevant languages, but the culture and politics, too, not to mention spending time there. Because the government valued such expertise, area experts could look forward to a good career. American students often spent half a year or a year in East Germany, in the Soviet Union, in Poland.
Today, few such programs remain, and even when they’re offered, students—with careers and security clearances in mind—steer clear of them. “My cursor hovered lovingly over ‘East Asian Studies’ (EAS) for a few seconds; then, with a firm finality, I scrolled down and clicked on ‘School of Public and International Affairs’ (SPIA). One last click, ‘submit form,’ and the deed was done,” a Princeton student named Vincent Jiang wrote in the Daily Princetonian last spring.
Today’s ambitious young men and women in top graduate programs will no doubt get their security clearances, and they’re certain to land good jobs in foreign and security policy, too. But what knowledge will they bring? The United States’ many Iranian Americans and Chinese Americans, meanwhile, would be ideal recruits to the CIA or the NSA. They, though, have a reduced chance of getting security clearances to begin with.
With limited exposure to friendly and unfriendly countries, the next generation of diplomats and intelligence officials unlikely have the kind of knowledge Washington needs. That’s a great pity. During the height of globalization, when many a country gave the impression of moving in a Westerly direction, the United States might have been able to get away with insufficient understanding of its fellow nations. But with the geopolitical standoff between Western countries and a China-led grouping intensifying, with the Middle East on the brink of escalating conflict, and with Russia menacing its neighbors, Washington needs such knowledge.
Meanwhile, traffic in the other direction is proceeding briskly—indeed, it’s exploding. In the 2021-22 academic year (the latest year available), British universities had 680,000 foreign students compared to 2.18 million students from the U.K. The former included 152,000 from China and 17,630 from Hong Kong. Nearly 127,000 Indians were studying in Britain, too, as were 9,000 Saudis and even 15 North Koreans. By contrast, a mere 23,000 Americans were studying in Britain. (Already in 2017-2018, the total number of foreign students in the U.K. was extremely high, at 470,000.) At U.S. universities, the percentage of foreign students has grown by 149 percent since 1976—but by only 47 percent since 2010.
Many of the foreigners enroll at Western universities through programs funded by their governments. Indeed, this month a British investigation into concerns that foreigners were exploiting higher education as a way of getting work in the country found that the vast majority of them were, in fact, bona fide students.
Expertise gained from books and television is fine, but woefully inadequate for people who make decisions about foreign and security policy. Yes, well-trained U.S. diplomats and intelligence officers send good information back to Washington. Even they, though, suffer from the same cultural myopia as their graduate-student brethren, often serving in foreign countries whose languages they don’t speak.
Indeed, many a diplomat seems to prefer life inside the embassy compound than out in the field. And even the most insightful diplomatic dispatches are of little use if the recipients back home possess a Washington-centric view of the world. There are many people in recent U.S. administrations who would have benefited massively from living in other countries.
Granted, new espionage legislation in Russia and China makes living there daunting for Americans and other Westerners. But it’s still possible. And there are countless other countries future U.S. officials ought to know from more than reading and remote viewing.
“Make area studies cool again,” as the Daily Princetonian headline urged. Amen to that—and to real knowledge about other countries. Not because such knowledge needs a “cool” label, but because it’s indispensable.

If your insistence is that Broadway bootlegs are fighting cultural elitism, then I just want to know how you're consuming and interacting with live theatre outside of Broadway musicals? Are you buying cast recordings and seeing shows on tour when they're closer to you? Are you seeing regional theatre and community theatre? Are you going to Fringe Festivals, or checking out the weird random stuff that theatre artists are CONSTANTLY putting on in weird spaces? There's always a theatre person trying to put up something in a coffee shop, parking lot, basement, whoever will have them!
Theatre is desperate for an audience, and the future of the Broadway you cherish depends on artists having places to learn and grow and develop. Hell, the best live production of Les Mis I have EVER SEEN was done by a local high school; go see local high school productions! I would argue that continuing to uphold ONLY Broadway as valuable American theatre is itself contributing to "cultural elitism." I myself am a theatre artist, and if I saw someone recording my live work without my permission, it would anger me and make me deeply sad.

Arizona Trip 🌵☀️ February 17-23, 2024
I’m a bit late on recapping this trip, but I wanted to document it as it was just so good. Kate @colorado-wildflowers and I planned a trip to Phoenix, AZ to escape the winter blues.
Day 1: We met up with Alex @flowers-justbecause who I had never met before. She was awesome and little did I know how supportive (literally and figuratively) she’d be. We hiked Picketpost Mountain in Superior, AZ. This hike is rated difficult and boy… was it. It wasn’t marked well and there was high elevation which I’ve dealt with pleanty of times before, but I was not prepared for the rock scrambling that ensued. Kate caught some gnarly pictures of Alex and I scaling the mountain and seeing it from her prospective was wild to me (pic #8). There was a point in the climb that I almost was in tears (a first for me), but with the help of Alex and Kate, I was able to move past that. Alex even let me use her shoe as a “rock peg” during some of the climb, and I had just met her! Overall it was such a fun day and I felt badass afterward.
Day 2: We did an awesome hike at Lost Dutchman State Park. This park was so cool with numerous rock formations. This was on Presidents’ Day, and there were many people here. This hike even had a baby waterfall, but due to the temps of the desert, we could barely see it. This hike just had a lot of variety and I loved the loop as we were able to trek downhill afterward. Much needed after the day prior’s tough hike. Afterward, I picked up a coffee mug and magnet at the gift shop. We then got vegan chorizo tacos and relaxed in the hot tub at a spa across the street from our airbnb. Our air bnb host comped us free day passes to the spa due to their condo’s tub being out of service.
Day 3: We went to Saguaro Lake and did paddle boarding! The lake was beautiful. Kate even saw a wild desert pig. I couldn’t get over being in 70s and sunshine in the middle of February. I was truly basking in all its glory. After paddle boarding, we went and saw the most gorgeous sunset at “Hole in the Rock”. Definitely a touristy area, but beautiful and worth doing, nonetheless.
Day 4: We met up with Alex again and did a small hike at White Tank Mountain Regional Park. This place was fully paved and just so well maintained. Kate and Alex did a sunrise hike at Camelback Mountain, so an “easier” hike was perfect. The views did not disappoint. We also saw a bunch of petroglyphs! After that, we had such a wholesome/cute Taylor Swift Eras tour movie night. Alex brought her bracelet-making kits, and we made friendship bracelets. I made a bracelet that said “glorious sunrise” from one of my favorite songs of hers, Happiness.
Tumblr media
Day 5: Our last day consisted of a hike at South Mountain, which is a park 10 minutes from our airbnb! It was the perfect way to end our trip. There were some cool caves (Dead Man’s pass) and amazing views of Phoenix. We then went to the Desert Botanical Garden. I’ve never seen so many cool-looking cactus before. Speaking of which, I got hand-made cactus in their gift shop and added it to my bookshelf. I love picking up cool trinkets on my trips. I found the perfect place for it on my bookshelf.
This trip was seriously everything I wanted it to be and more. Kate did such a fabulous job planning it (she is the desert queen) and I had such a fun time spending the week with her in the sunshine blasting Bright Eyes and Taylor Swift with the windows down. Oh, it was a wonderful splash.

OC Valentine's Challenge 2024 -> Day 2: Second Chance Romance
(Read on AO3)
It’s been three years since he left her, two years since his father was committed to full-time hospital care, one year since he passed, and now he was standing by a payphone two hundred miles away from his hometown, quarter posed on the precipice of the slot. His shoulders raised to his ears with a deep inhale, and with the slump– the exhale– he tossed the quarter inside.
She picked up after the fourth ring.
‘Hello?’
The sound of her voice alone was enough to send a tremor to his knees. Stephen hadn’t heard from her in all the three years since he left– left their life together, left their goals, left everything he once wanted behind– and he hadn’t realised just how scared he was to call her back into his life.
‘Um… anyone on the other side of this thing?’
He swallowed, his mouth suddenly as dry as the Sahara.
“Andy,” he forced out.
A breath caught itself in the receiver, short and rough and wrapped in disbelief.
Stephen cleared his throat, “Andy, I wanted you to know that I’m sorry. I’m sorry for leaving you that day, I’m sorry for bailing on our plans. Life just has this crazy way of showing us our greatest failures, our shames, like, afterwards, like– when it’s too late.–”
“What are you talking about, Stephen?”
Stephen forced himself to take a big breath. He physically stepped back from the pay phone and closed his eyes. One mississippi, two mississippi…
“You,” he said. “Me, us. I… I miss it. The life. In the van.”
The line was silent on the other end.
“I was wondering…” He left it hanging. How could he ask this of her? How could the deserter suddenly have the right?
After a painful three beats of quiet, a small voice piped up:
“I sold it.”
“The van?”
“Yes. I sold the van.”
Stephen turned around on the spot so he faced the gas pumps instead. At the furthest one, a middle-aged man was rummaging around in the trunk of his sedan while it fuelled up.
“What are you doing now?” he stammered.
“School, mostly,” answered Andy. “I applied for a few scholarships, and now I’m studying marine biology in Oregon. I go to the beach every now and again for fun, and to pester my teachers about extra-credit hands-on-field-work.” She said the last part in jest, and Stephen can just imagine that signature shrug of hers accompanying those words.
His opens and closes his mouth a couple times in search of words. Back when they had been together, touring around the entire West Coast natural region, she had talked about wanting to pursue marine science but had always felt hindered by her financial situation. He felt a glow behind his sternum at the thought of her finally achieving her dream (and then a drop like stone in his stomach remembering his aim, five minutes ago, to pull her back into continuing van life with him).
‘That’s amazing.” He caught himself smiling, which felt weird in the moment for he was still staring at the sedan-owning man. The man was patting his pockets frantically as if trying to find his keys. Stephen turned back around and doodled a finger over the number pad. “Hey. Do you want to meet up sometime?”
In response, a deep inhale…
“I’d come over there, obviously. I can’t take you away from your studies.”
“Sure.” It was short. It was plain. (It made his mind reel with worry.) “Spring break’s coming up. Why don’t you come here in March. On the Fourteenth. That’s a Thursday. I can show you my favourite coffee shop.”
“Consider it booked,” he said with an optimism that was mostly his own, only partially trying to grasp at an expectation of the happiness he’d get from this. “See you March fourteenth.”
“See you then.”
A million factors could contribute to the downtrodden way she spoke those words to him, and maybe he was reading into things too much, but he worried — at least part of him did — if she was doing this because she felt obligated to or if she actually wanted to see him again.

Why Are Homestays Becoming A Valuable Solution For Solo Travelers?
Homestays are often considered an affordable and cost-effective accommodation option for travelers for several reasons
Lower Cost: Homestays are typically more budget-friendly compared to hotels or resorts. This can significantly reduce the overall cost of your travel, allowing you to allocate your budget to other aspects of your trip.
Inclusive Pricing: Many homestays offer all-inclusive pricing, which means that your stay covers not only the room but also meals and other amenities, making it a cost-effective choice.
Local Experience: Homestays offer an opportunity to experience local culture, hospitality, and daily life. This cultural immersion can be an enriching part of your travel experience, often at a lower cost than more commercial accommodations.
Personalized Service: Homestay hosts typically offer personalized services and are often more accommodating to your specific needs and preferences, enhancing your experience without additional costs.
Flexibility: Homestays often provide flexible check-in and check-out times, as well as the option to tailor your stay according to your needs, which can lead to cost savings and convenience.
Meals Included: Many homestays include meals in the accommodation price. This can be a significant saving, especially if you don't have to eat out for every meal.
Affordable for Groups: If you're traveling with a group of people, booking an entire homestay property can be more cost-effective than booking multiple hotel rooms.
Off-the-Beaten-Path Locations: Homestays can be found in unique and off-the-beaten-path locations, allowing you to explore less touristy areas, which can be more affordable than popular tourist destinations.
Overall, homestays offer solo travelers a unique opportunity to connect with locals, experience a destination authentically, and create lasting memories. They provide a sense of home away from home and can enhance the solo travel experience in various ways.

A  local coffee purveyor just received a ringing endorsement from one of Hollywood’s biggest stars.
Keanu Reeves is currently in Pittsburgh getting ready to rock out with his band, Dogstar, during a sold-out show Friday night at Mr. Smalls Theatre in Millvale.
The “John Wick” star took some time earlier this week to tell the world that Coffee Tree Roasters is now officially “Keanu Reeves APPROVED,” as the regionally based coffee-shop chain and wholesaler put it via a social media post.
Dogstar has been around in various forms since the early 1990s and currently consists of guitarist and vocalist Bret Domrose, drummer Rob Mailhouse and Reeves on bass. Tonight’s Pittsburgh show is the latest stop on the band’s “Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees” tour.
Mailhouse must also be a fan of Coffee Tree Roasters’ work, as evidenced by him proclaiming that “it was delicious” in a comment on that Facebook post.
“So glad you gentlemen enjoyed our coffee,” Coffee Tree Roasters wrote in response to Mailhouse’s comment. “Turns out, some of our team feels the same about your music, and are looking forward to tomorrow's concert!!! Please stop back anytime!”
Reeves recently returned as the titular assassin in this spring’s “John Wick: Chapter 4” and is set to appear in next year’s “John Wick” spinoff film “Ballerina.” His long list of big-screen credits includes “The Prince of Pennsylvania,’ a locally shot crime caper in which Reeves plays a teenager whose plan to kidnap his father for ransom money spectacularly backfires.

Blessed with lush greenery, cascading waterfalls, aromatic coffee plantations, and a rich cultural heritage, Coorg entices visitors year-round. However, understanding the nuances of its weather can significantly enhance your experience. Let's explore the best times to visit this enchanting destination to make the most of your Coorg getaway.
The Optimal Seasons:
Blissful Winter Retreat (October to February): The winter months, spanning from October to February, herald a delightful time to visit Coorg. With clear skies, cool temperatures, and minimal rainfall, this period offers ideal conditions for exploring the region's natural beauty and indulging in outdoor activities. Average temperatures range from 15°C to 20°C, creating a pleasant ambiance for sightseeing, trekking through the hills, and relishing Coorg's famous coffee amidst the misty mornings. Additionally, winter marks the harvest season for coffee and spices, providing visitors with an opportunity to witness and partake in the local agricultural traditions.
Refreshing Monsoon Delight (June to September): Coorg experiences its monsoon season from June to September, bringing abundant rainfall that rejuvenates its lush landscapes. While the rain may deter some travelers, it adds a magical touch to Coorg's natural beauty, enhancing the charm of its waterfalls, rivers, and verdant valleys. The mist-clad hills and the earthy aroma of wet soil create a surreal ambiance, ideal for nature enthusiasts and photographers. However, it's essential to be prepared for occasional showers and slippery trails while exploring Coorg during the monsoon.
Tranquil Shoulder Seasons (March to May and October): The shoulder seasons, encompassing March to May and October, present a mix of weather conditions in Coorg. March to May signifies the onset of summer, with temperatures gradually rising and reaching highs of around 35°C. While the days may be warm, the evenings retain a pleasant coolness, making it suitable for outdoor activities such as plantation tours and wildlife spotting. October marks the transition from monsoon to winter, with decreasing rainfall and mild temperatures, offering a tranquil atmosphere for those seeking a quieter retreat amidst Coorg's serene landscapes.
Factors to Consider:
