If I may put on my tinfoil hat for a moment, this is a really opportune time to try banning tik tok and shutting down the Affordable Connectivity Program which sought to provide internet access to low income folks. Our government is quite literally restricting our access to information right as it continues to financially support the genocidal apartheid state of Israel. I take this as a sign they fear the working class and our power. Time to rise up.

#I do not want to hustle and some of my most beloved people do not understand this#I was talking to my honorary big sister on the phone today about why I'm taking a gap year#the main reason is that the final semester of the program I was accepted into is around 50 hours per week of unpaid field work#which means you aren't allowed to have a job during that semester. this information was not presented until after the application process#anyway she was like “well that's fairly normal for healthcare professions” which is true#however this is a community college program and I would have expected them to account for people needing to work throughout college#anyway I responded “yeah true but I'm considering that maybe healthcare isn't for me then. I don't want a job that requires that much work.#And I don't! I don't want 50 or 60 hour work weeks! I want to work 40 hours and then leave and live my life!#but she made it seem like any job that requires a college degree is going to require that. And I don't think that's true#but also she is older than I am and has much more job experience so idk.#maybe she's advising based on the fact that as a teenager I was super type A and ambitious and really wanted a career?#whereas in the past couple years...idk I just want a reliable job that I don't hate that pays the bills and leaves time for enjoying life#so. I'm not sure#And now I kind of feel bad for not having that ambition anymore/ not wanting to have to give myself ulcers to get through school#But college is not worth my sanity and I found that out the hard way.#And I also feel bad for not being one of those people who CAN handle that much workload! Like I can certainly learn#to do more than I'm doing currently#but I will never be one of those constantly busy and insanely productive people. And I don't even want to be anymore#and yet that feels like an error.#I am not lazy! I used to think I was but no. I enjoy getting work done and doing personal projects and going to work and improving things.#It's not even as though I don't have things I want to do with my life. I have a lot of short term and long term goals!#I want to contribute to my community and support my family however I can and make art and tell stories and be a safe place for people!#and so much else!#but those ambitions aren't necessarily directly connected to school or a job for me anymore#and I value rest and having a social life too much to completely put my health on hold for years and years#sure college does take up a lot of time and energy but it shouldn't wholly consume your life as far as I can see.#and now I feel very unsure if that approach is realistic.#thinking I should talk with her again and try to explain myself a little better and ask what she meant.#diary

I have a new little icon that I love very much. not only does it have beta design zigzagoon (the best zigzagoon), but there's a LEMON pattern. because it's ZESTY. get it. lemon zest,,,, zestyzigzagoon... 🥁

#i've got a free art program and access to PNGs and a dream ✨ perhaps it's giving 'graphic design is my passion' but that is okay!#and I do know that lemons have a ~connotation~ in fic communities (not as much these days? haven't seen the citrus scale in a while)#but honestly that only amuses me further lol.#I like my zesty little pfp 😌it's always nice to customize things like that and to make it feel YOURS.#I want to mess with my tumblr theme more too. I know it doesn't really matter but I've always liked having a cohesive feeling to it.#I like customizing my digital spaces just as much as my physical ones honestly.#I'm busy for the rest of today but maybe later I'll mess with my tumblr theme. I'll match the teal/lemons/zesty vibe.#I like the dark red and the roses but honestly that's a lot more refined than I am lol. I connect more with the light and airy colors.#I'll still have roses involved somewhere on the actual web theme though.#and I might add a thin border around the outer edge of the pfp too because the white just kind of fades into everything.#sorry. literally none of this is writing related. once again misusing my writing blog but it is my blog and I shall chat however I please.#follow for writing updates or because we're mutuals. stay for the off topic nonsense and random horse related Chasing Sunsets content✨#ooooh that reminds me though. i am coming along with the next few chapters!#I'm working on several concurrently and it's going well! I've got a few chapter titles decided and some key scenes in the works :)#stuff I've had planned out for a looooooooong time. finally getting around to some very fun things soon!#it might not end up being chapter 13 by the time we get to it but I am excited for what is currently planned for 13.#might be closer to 15 depending. but I thiiiiiiiink we should get there sooner rather than later.

i'm tired of being blamed for being exploited by other people.
like when i was trafficked - the reason that shit is so common and widespread - despite the way the public acts like it's a big deal and they super duper hate it and give so many huge big shits about this crime of exploitation - and the reason traffickers know they can get away with it is because they specifically target people who they know no one gives a shit about. they know that if we tried to get anyone to help us, we'd find out that human trafficking is not really that big of a deal after all.
at first i was very careful about what i said to people because i was afraid they'd call the cops and make everything far worse. as it turns out, i could have walked through any government agency or any service nonprofit full of mandated reporters saying "hi, i am a trafficking victim, hello? can someone help me please?" and no one would even look up from their paperwork. they’d hate me just for creating the expectation that they should give a shit.
people only care about hypothetical victims. the sort of perfect victims that they want to save, that they'd be seen as heroes for saving.
not people like us. and by "like us" i mean real human beings who cannot or will not harden ourselves to better tolerate the conditions of this fucked up society.
and since there is no legit treatment for the deep psychic pain that comes from seeing all this heinous shit that happens around us and to us day after day - we use drugs.
they hate us for not adjusting to the horrors.
that is why we are "marginalized." we are banished. and to deprive human beings of social connection is violence. it's like taking a fish out of water and leaving it to suffocate in the air. when we deprived of belonging, the same is going on for us, but it happens so much slower. the torment can last for decades.
that is what really causes "mental illness." it's not some "chemical imbalance" or "malfunction" in our brains. it's severe prolonged alienation. when we are harmed in the most fucked up ways imaginable, the people around us act like everything is normal. they want us to believe that everything is normal. that we are in the wrong for feeling hurt when they hurt us. that is where trauma comes from.
we are blamed for having been vulnerable in the first place. the real crime is to reveal vulnerability to a society that values competition as a virtue, and instills a "duty to exploit." there are no rewards for those who pass up an opportunity to take advantage of another's vulnerability.
and when people are marginalized in the way that people who use drugs are marginalized, they feel powerless, hopeless, that there is nothing better on the horizon. we see the way the "respectable upstanding community members" live, the way they treat one another like shit, step on toes, backstab, lie, manipulate - anything it takes to get ahead, no matter how it may hurt anyone else - we see them rewarded for this, again and again. that's all we ever see and that is all we know. and so we treat our own the same way.
but the thing is, the impact of all that duplicitous behavior doesn't hit those more powerful and privileged MFers the same way. they are cushioned by their relative "respectability."
for us though, it is pretty devastating. and there will be no one to feel sorry for us or make us whole again. because we can't be "made whole" with anything that can be bought or sold. material security can make things easier for us, of course, but the entire reason for our suffering in the first place is that we can't or won't harden - even in a comfy house with a nice car and adorable shoes, we will still have to see and know everything we know, and we will still feel the pain of believing there is nothing we can do, or nothing we should do - there will always be this void, gnawing at us, no matter how hard we try to fulfill the obligations that are supposed to make us deserving of a place of respect in this society.
because the human part of us won't go away. it's that fish, suffocating on the shore, fighting to breathe. the fish isn't gonna be able to breathe any better with a new car or cute shoes. the fish needs water or it will continued to suffer until it dies.
and for us, it is social connection. that's what we are deprived of. humans are social animals. our species has only survived as long as we have through interdependence - as in, "to each according to their need, from each according to their ability” - genuine bonds of trust and care for the safety and well-being of our fellow humans.
this shit we've got going on here - it's anti-human. we were never meant to live like this. it only feels like a burden to care about others because we are forced to keep plugging along, doing the shit we have to do for our own survival. and all those things we gotta do are things that uphold and maintain the anti-human system. we are told that we cannot do anything about the other shit, it's not our problem, we need to focus on our own survival. and that's why it feels so overwhelming and burdensome to care about other people's struggles. that's why we are supposed to believe that self-care means "accepting the things we cannot change."
they are telling us to purge ourselves of our remaining humanness. stop caring. because caring - it's not really just some warm fuzzy feeling or the pain of putting ourselves in others' shoes - it's meant to drive us to act. and that's why it hurts. we feel the drive but can't act. we are convinced that we can't, that there's nothing we can do.
social connection - deep genuine bonds with other humans - are as essential to our survival as food, water, and air. we are starving, and the pain of empathy is hunger pangs that we are being told to just ignore.
the only thing that will make it not hurt so bad is solidarity. to learn how to trust and be trusted. to realize the power that comes from knowing that we have people, we belong, and our people have got our back no matter what, and we got theirs too. that it’s never a burden to look out for one another. it is what we do. it is why we are here and it is as good for us as it is for whichever one of us is in need. we all have needs, and we will all need a bit more at times. and we all have the capacity to meet those needs for one another. we do not lose anything by doing that for one another. it is our purpose. it’s the reason we are alive. it’s the reason we want to be alive.
when we are isolated, it is a lot more devastating to be betrayed or exploited, but when you've got a community of people who not only care, but will also catch you when you fall - it doesn't hurt so bad. you can move forward. shit happens, but it ain't a big deal because you never have to go through any of it alone.
that's it.

The device theory by Molly stars is my lord of the rings.
#GOD ITS SO FUCKING LONG BUT I LOVE IT#the idea of the game being a sort of device to me is completely canon because it works so well and its cool as fuck#very similar to how Oneshot and Off executed the idea of you connecting to a world through a program#but deltarune is going yo take that concept as far as possible i think#darker. yet darker even.#GOD IM SO FUCKING EXCITED FOR THE NEXT CHAPTERS#RAAAAAAH I FUCKING LOVE META NARRATIVES#I LOVE CHARACTERS HAVING THEIR REALITY SHATTER AROUND THEM AND THE DECONSTRUCTION OF VIDEO GAMES AS A CONCEPT#Also the idea of darker yet darker referring to creating fiction within fiction and blurring the lines of reality is so fucking cool#idk but visually it evokes the image of silent hill 2 in the prison when your repeatedly descending down stairs/holes#the idea of going further and further as you lose grip on whats real#also the idea of a character (probs Dess) being stuck in the physical game code is such an awesome idea#watching the community go from “oh hey undertale 2!” to “oh god what the fuck is happening” is fantastic#deltarune just has such an eerie undertone to its story its fucking wonderful#even when its bright and happy the moment you dig deeper it starts becoming genuinely unnerving#sorry i love deltarune#random rambles#deltarune#the device theory

suddenly realising that a decent amount of our system's dysfunctions might be due to OCD 😭😭😭
#i dont even know how to explain the thought process im having but i think i found the root of one of our major issues#like. it stems from our start in the tulpa community. the worry that we're 'forcing' or 'puppeting' someone who wants to be independent#we didn't know where the line was in willogenicism of where you stop controlling them and they're fully independent#that idea becoming a dysfunction was fully because we personally misunderstood our own system origins we were never willo#the community we were in was really helpful in helping us figure out that we are an adaptive system not a created one#it felt like 'controlling' them because we were more of a proxy-median sys back then and the lines between us were blurred#now it's easier to see the distinction between everyone's thoughts and actions but back then we were only just aware of being a sys#but it seems to have evolved into a sense of never knowing when a headmate is fully formed and when it's okay to 'influence' their forming#avoiding headmates BECAUSE we're worried about fucking up their formation#but then that in itself fucks up their formation because they have less time in front to solidify fully#how we neglect our own system and fellow headmates out of worry of fucking it up#yeah that might be an ocd symptom#finally breaking that barrier of worrying we're mislabeling our issues as OCD and it's pretty provable we have it now#has had a sudden and huge impact on how much anxiety we're having on a daily basis#like we're all super weirded out right now because this sense of calmness and assuredness in who we are and what we're doing#is. so weird and alien. its like two layers of an art program were misaligned and it looked super chaotic before#and someone just clicked like 3 buttons and realigned it perfectly and the whole image suddenly makes sense and is less eyestraining#our heart palpitations have slowed down too. like that's a Physical indicator our anxiety is hugely reduced#just from having that knowledge of WHY my brain is the way it is and knowing what exactly to ask for help with if i need it#same with figuring out we were autistic it was a whole worldshift that made everything make so much more sense#i felt like so many of my mental issues were a confusing soup of randomness and I'd never find a real diagnosis for any of it#like we were just some mental frankenstein of disparate symptoms that would always be an outlier in a way#just didn't want to spend our life being essentially 'undiagnosable' because we were just too weird and confusing and niche#now it's like. oh. oh shit all these unrelated things are actually related? that makes so much more sense now#connecting all these separately distressing behaviours that were never thought to need comparing before#because it all felt so truly unrelated it didn't even occur but now i see they all come from almost the exact same places#and also finding out recently that a lot of mental conditions I've considered i might have but weren't sure about#are classified as ANXIETY disorders. that makes a ton of sense to me now. i never knew OCD was an anxiety disorder until now#if i had known that sooner i probably would have connected the dots years ago I've KNOWN about my anxiety#i am diagnosed with GAD i knew these issues were anxiety based but OCD makes my behaviours from that anxiety make more sense

Students strive for “Balance!” in a lively product showcase

On an otherwise dark and rainy Monday night, attendees packed Kresge Auditorium for a lively and colorful celebration of student product designs, as part of the final presentations for MIT’s popular class 2.009 (Product Engineering Processes).
With “Balance!” as its theme, the vibrant show attracted hundreds of attendees along with thousands more who tuned in online to see students pitch their products.
The presentations were the culmination of a semester’s worth of work in which six student teams were challenged to design, build, and draft a business plan for a product, in a process meant to emulate what engineers experience as part of a design team at a product development firm.
“This semester, we pushed the six teams to step outside of their comfort zones and find equilibrium between creativity and technical rigor, all as they embarked on a product engineering process journey,” said 2.009 lecturer Josh Wiesman.
Trying to find a balance
The course, known on campus as “two-double-oh-nine,” marks a colorful end to the fall semester on campus. Each team, named after a different color, was given mentors, access to makerspaces, and a budget of $7,500 to turn their ideas into working products. In the process, they learned about creativity, product design, and teamwork.
Various on-stage demonstrations and videos alluded to this year’s theme, from balance beam walks to scooter and skateboard rides.
“Balance is a word that can be used to describe stability, steadiness, symmetry, even fairness or impartiality,” said Professor Peko Hosoi, who co-instructed the class with Wiesman this semester. “Balance is something we all strive for, but we rarely stop to reflect on. Tonight, we invite you to reflect on balance and to celebrate the energy and creativity of each student and team.”
Safety first
The student products spanned industries and sectors. The Red Team developed a respirator for wildland firefighters, who work to prevent and control forest fires by building “fire lines.” Over the course of long days in challenging terrain, these firefighters use hand tools and chainsaws to create fire barriers by digging trenches, clearing vegetation, and other work based on soil and weather conditions. The team’s respirator is designed to comfortably rest on a user’s face and includes a battery-powered air filter the size of a large water bottle that can fit inside a backpack.
The mask includes a filter and a valve for exhalations, with a hose that connects to the blower unit. Team members said their system provides effective respiratory protection against airborne particles and organic vapors as users’ work. Each unit costs $40 to make, and the team plans to license the product to manufacturers, who can sell directly to fire departments and governments.
The Purple Team presented Contact, a crash-detection system designed to enhance safety for young bicycle riders. The device combines hardware and smart algorithms to detect accidents and alert parents or guardians. The system includes features like a head-sensing algorithm to minimize false alerts, plus a crash-detection algorithm that uses acceleration data to calculate injury severity. The compact device is splashproof and dustproof, includes Wi-Fi/LTE connectivity, and can run for a week on a single charge. With a retail price of $75 based on initial production of 5,000 units, the team plans to market the product to schools and outdoor youth groups, aiming to give young riders more independence while keeping them safe.
On ergonomics and rehabilitation
The Yellow Team presented an innovative device for knee rehabilitation. Their prototype is an adjustable, wearable device that monitors patients’ seated exercises in real-time. The data is processed by a mobile app and shared with the patient’s physical therapist, enabling tailored feedback and adjustments. The app also encourages patients to exercise each day, tracks range of motion, and gives therapists a quick overview of each patient’s progress. The product aims to improve recovery outcomes for postsurgery patients or those undergoing rehabilitation for knee-related injuries.
The Blue Team, meanwhile, presented Band-It, an ergonomic tool designed to address the issue of wrist pain among lobstermen. With their research showing that among the 20,000 lobstermen in North America, 1 in 3 suffer from wrist pain, the team developed a durable and simple-to-use banding tool. The product would retail for $50, with a manufacturing cost of $10.50, and includes a licensing model with 10 percent royalties plus a $5,000 base licensing fee. The team emphasized three key features: ergonomic design, simplicity, and durability.
Underwater solutions
Some products were designed for the sea. The Pink Team presented MARLIN (Marine Augmented Reality Lens Imaging Network), a system designed to help divers see more clearly underwater. The device integrates into diving masks and features a video projection system that improves visibility in murky or cloudy water conditions. The system creates a 3D-like view that helps divers better judge distances and depth, while also processing and improving the video feed in real-time to make it easier to see in poor conditions. The team included a hinged design that allows the system to be easily removed from the mask when needed.
The Green Team presented Neptune, an underwater communication device designed for beginner scuba divers. The system features six preprogrammed messages, including essential diving communications like “Ascend,” “Marine Life,” “Look at Me,” “Something’s Off,” “Air,” and “SOS.” The compact device has a range of 20 meters underwater, can operate at depths of up to 50 meters, and runs for six hours on a battery charge. Built with custom electronics to ensure clear and reliable communications underwater, Neptune is housed in a waterproof enclosure with an intuitive button interface. The communications systems will be sold to dive shops in packs of two for $800. The team plans to have dive shops rent the devices for $15 a dive.
“Product engineers of the future”
Throughout the night, spectators in Kresge cheered and waved colorful pompoms as teams demonstrated their prototypes and shared business plans. Teams pitched their products with videos, stories, and elaborate props.
In closing, Wiesman and Hosoi thanked the many people behind the scenes, from lab instructors and teaching assistants to those working to produce the night’s show. They also commended the students for embracing the rigorous and often chaotic coursework, all while striving for balance.
“This all started a mere 13 weeks ago with ideation, talking to people from all walks of life to understand their challenges and uncover problems and opportunities,” Hosoi said. “The class’s six phases of product design ultimately turned our students into product engineers of the future.”

sometimes i forget that vitali really is a heywood boy
#personal#like of course he is. he may have ended up a corpo boy but deep down he is nothing like that#he used to go out to smoke with friends in places they weren't supposed to be#got into so many fights when he was young and he was a boxer like jackie... they trained with viktor for a long time together#when vitali was in college. and it's always been about community and connection to him#even now as a fixer he's putting his resources towards his mercenaries and their families#and to the fixer council so they can use the collective income to keep streets safe for regular residents of night city#he's got a whole program running to support businesses that are trying to make heywood more accessible to those without a car#and organizations focused on making life in night city better for children specifically so they have safe places to hang out with friends#if he was really a corpo boy he would've set up his office in city center somewhere. or like. charter hill#would've barely cared about his mercenaries and would DEFINITELY not have helped with creating the fixer council#none of his mercenaries have died. like obviously people get injured but none of them have ever died and like#it's all because he makes sure that they have all the resources and gear they need to succeed at the gigs he gives them#which makes me so insane he cares so much and he's running his business SO professionally but in like. such a human way#like yeah his skills as a corpo come in super handy for what he's doing here and he's absolutely using them to his advantage#but that's all he's using them for. corpo boy on the surface but lover at heart

Here's a link to the original thread on the site formerly known as Twitter.
[ ID: Multiple screenshots of a thread that start with PinKIYSensei quoting a tweet by SassyE. The original tweet by SassyE says "I think theres too much concern over literacy than quality of life people are facing rn. Especially young adults. Tf is a book going to do when you're hungry and homeless."
The thread by PinKIYSensei is as follows: "Literacy is quality of life. It’s not just about books. It’s about being able to understand a lease, advocate for yourself, navigate systems, and even regulate your emotions to get better outcomes.
Ppl think literacy just means reading for fun or school but it’s functional, emotional, digital, financial. If you can’t read instructions, write a coherent email, or understand a warning sign, you’re navigating the world w/ a blindfold.
Like uggggh. Language gives us OPTIONS. The more language you have access to, the more choices you can make in how you respond to hard situations, whether it’s dealing w/ a landlord, resolving a conflict, or applying for aid. [GIF if someone saying "What's not clicking?"]
I keep talking about emotional regulation, something many lack. That is HEAVILY tied to literacy. Can you articulate your needs? De-escalate a situation? Reframe a setback? That’s vocab AND comprehension AND self-awareness AND reading & interpreting what’s happening around you.
Like yes, we need housing and food, but if someone doesn’t have the literacy to complete an application, explain their situation to a caseworker, or process rejection w/o spiraling, that affects their whole life trajectory. Literacy doesn’t just help you read a book. Pls!"
/ End of ID and transcript. ]

📢📢📢
#this is one of the many reasons why free and public education (especially early education) and programs like PBS are so vital#it is why literacy rates are cited when measuring a country or area's standards of living#this is also why programs that aid in raising literacy rates are some of the prime targets of far-right authoritarian movements#they want to take away any means people have for standing up for themselves and communicating with each other#it's all connected

"Claire Cao was only a senior in high school when she saw a vital need in her community — and filled it.
In 2024, the teenager spent her time outside of school volunteering at Blanchet House, a Portland-based nonprofit that serves people experiencing homelessness through food donations, clothing drives, and mental health assistance programs.
As she logged hours as a Blanchet House student ambassador, Cao soon realized how difficult it was for community members to keep track of shelter openings, rotating food service programs, and available mental health resources.
“During one afternoon meal service, I met Dano, an unhoused man who shared his struggles with accessing basic services like food and shelter,” Cao said in a recent press release.
“Left disconnected from essential services, Dano described his struggles of not knowing where to go or which shelters had available beds.”
Combining her love for technology, law, and public policy, Cao pulled available resources into a database and created the ShelterBridge app, which connects users to shelters and services in their area.
“ShelterBridge wasn’t simply inspired by Dano — it was inspired by the realization that access to resources is a fundamental need that we, as a community, can do a better job of providing,” Cao emphasized.
“I wanted to use my skills to build something that could bridge that gap, ensuring that no one falls through the cracks simply because they don’t know where to turn for help.”
In addition to linking users to services in their area, the app also has a rating system similar to Yelp. This system allows people to leave star ratings and reviews on shelters, food services, hotlines, and legal aid.
The ratings not only help users differentiate between services in their area — but they also provide invaluable feedback to the nonprofits, organizations, and government programs that service them.
“We've been asking for an app like this for a number of years now,” Scott Kerman, executive director of Blanchet House, told Portland news station KGW.
In mid-January, Cao won the 2024 Congressional App Challenge in Oregon’s First District for her work with ShelterBridge — outcompeting 12,682 student submissions.
Since the app first launched, Cao and her growing ShelterBridge team — which includes enterprising high schoolers and college students from across the nation — have expanded services to California, Philadelphia, Seattle, Los Angeles, and North Carolina.

“Claire and the team she’s working with deserve all the credit in the world because they're doing something that frankly nobody else has really stepped up to do,” Kerman said.
“To have the kind of technology that we use every day with hotels and other kinds of reservations [to] help people get into safe, supportive and dignified shelter would be a game changer for our community.”
Although the app started as a class project, Cao said ShelterBridge’s success has far surpassed her expectations.
“I do hope to keep it up,” she told Oregon outlet KOIN 6 News, as she looked ahead to college and beyond. “I’ve made a lot of efforts to expand it to other cities as well — and it’s something I can mostly do from a computer or my laptop at home.”
