a lot of what stifles me with web game dev is the urge to keep the save files small. i keep it very conservative to make sure the player doesn't bump into browser storage issues and i also like that you can just copypaste your save anywhere as a plain text string! however if i want to do anything complex then that becomes the bottleneck. at some point i'll get back into Godot and make the most gratuitously intricate simulation game i can come up with. parasitizing people's hard drives to incubate enormous procedural map files

🌟 New
We’re running a new experiment in activity on web with more visual design updates.
We’ve rolled out a new top navigation bar in the iOS app. (This was already rolled out in the Android app.)
In the post editor on web, you can now reorder where an existing poll is in the post content when editing a post with a poll.
🛠 Fixed
We’ve fixed a bug in blogs’ RSS feeds that could prevent a title from being set on individual items in the feed.
On web, we fixed an issue that was causing the reblog icon at the bottom of posts to be misaligned by a couple of pixels.
We’ve fixed a bug across all platforms that was showing the “Mutuals” label for privately answered asks in activity when you aren’t mutuals with the answering blog.
We’ve fixed a bug on web that was preventing “retired” themes from appearing on their creators’ theme management page.
🚧 Ongoing
The new navigation layout experiment on desktop web is still going, and we’re still collecting feedback, making iterative improvements based on that feedback, and fixing bugs that people have pointed out to us.
We’re also fixing issues that are being reported to us about the direct messaging redesign experiment on web.
🌱 Upcoming
We’re working to fix a wide range of scroll performance issues on web, which has helped dramatically conserve memory usage and CPU in our tests so far, especially for folks using Tumblr in a mobile browser.
Experiencing an issue? File a Support Request and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can!
Want to share your feedback about something? Check out our Work in Progress blog and start a discussion with the community.

i think i accidentally left a rambling, gushy message @ the wrong tumblr because i’m nearly blind in one eye alongside being near-sighted, ergo i struggle with reading small print and i couldn’t find any external links to this account, and therefore assumed your hellsite handle was the same as your other socials 🥲 welp! i’ll just go curl up in a hole and die of embarrassment in just a moment—
i’ll try and paraphrase my original message without chatting off your ear like i did that…poor soul yesterday, so hi! hello! here from your recent video: “fandom is dead, here’s how we can fix it”; i’m allergic to leaving youtube comments, so here i am instead lmao — i really appreciated the approach you took to discussing the matter of modern fandom. i’ve seen the occasional post about fandom etiquette show up on my dash here or on x/twitter, but almost never on my feed in video format before now — oftentimes when fandom is “discussed” on youtube, even by content creators with massive platforms, the essayist is either condescending in a “kids these days 🙄” manner or they’re going “LOL! look at the cringe! aren’t those people weird??” while pointing and cracking jokes to the fellow normies about shipping drama or cosplayers doing a stupid little tiktok dance and sacrificing nuance and humility for maximum entertainment value, like some kind of. twenty-first century freakshow attraction. your video felt, refreshingly, like an actual discussion with the community, with you actually bringing in and platforming our voices on the matter, rather than a takedown — it actually reminded me a lot of coleydoesthings and princess weekes’s content, just a tad more blunt, and that is a compliment. you just got a new follower <3
i’ve been in online fandom for a. long time, just like a lot of my fellow y2k babies, it seems. i’m relatively young, physically (twenty-four, the second funniest number lmao) but i’ve been a lurker since i was ten years old — reading ff.net stories on my dinky little DSi web browser — and i officially joined my first online fandom at thirteen, so i’ve been around to see the gradual shift from the last gasping breaths of Ye Olde to our current climate in real time circa 2014-16. i’ve heard the death throes as old titans slowly withered and died (ff.net and livejournal, you will always be missed) and their decomposing bodies give way to more accessible but also more corporatized spaces and i’ve seen the gradual shift in attitudes among people for both the thankfully better (the “cosplay is not consent” movement, growing awareness of antiblackness and ableism in fandom spaces, more pushback against the blatant fetishization of queer people, etc.) and for the dismally worst (antishippers, harassment campaigns, growing entitlement regarding fanwork such as the unauthorized selling of fanfiction and giving unwarranted “critique” on fics, a general consumer culture dominating fandom culture as of late, etc.) and BOY, do i feel like a sixty year old man sitting on my porch, yelling at clouds, sometimes. i’ve also noticed, at least in the spaces I frequent (i say as if i’ve ever ventured outside my jayvik hobbit hole in six months), that there seems to be something of a resurgence, for lack of a better word, or nostalgia for Old Fandom™ — or, at least, the ✨ aesthetics ✨ of such — nowadays, and i’m hopeful that this might lead to another shift as the young’ins grow out of their more conservative, black and white thinking laced with vitriol and mudslinging in favour of becoming more conscious of their behaviours and embracing the more open-minded approach of the old merged with our more modern, progressive sensibilities — and perhaps we will see the creation of more personal fandom spaces we can congregate to that are not so tightly restricted to our current “social media” algorithm-sullied hellscape climate drenched in capitalism and irony poisoning, what with the creation and growing popularity of social networks like neocities alongside the modern titans like ao3. eh, what can i say? i’m an optimist, perhaps to a fault :skull:
i promised not to talk your ear off only to do exactly that; i fear i am beyond help 😭 you seem like an absolutely lovely person and i will be definitely checking out the rest of your content. and, just to check in, i sincerely hope your day is going well <3
lol thanks for the message I really appreciate it! and I can definitely relate to having grown up online to see what the social media landscape has become today lolol. Thanks again!

Decided to try Fallen London
So, going in I know nothing about this, having learned of its existence a few minutes ago thanks to a meme on this site. I have no idea what I'm doing, but I decided that I'll be roleplaying as one of my ocs in this web browser game. His name is Merlot Blackwing. He's a vampire who works as an artifact conservator. (Think Baumgartner Restorations, but with antiques and magic stuff) Merlot is also gay and in love with the son of a monster hunting guild leader.
I could use some beginner tips. Otherwise I'm really excited to dive into this gothic world.

Tired of people saying the TikTok ban doesn’t matter. Love it or hate it, this shit matters. It’s important.
I’m literally. Ok. These things all go hand in hand. Banning Tiktok sets a precedent to ban other apps and web browsers. Which means even more suppression of news. Banning Tiktok will ruin thousands of small businesses and even more thousands of people who make extra money through Tiktok are having that taken away from them (including me, I make money from this app) and a lot. And I mean a lot of people have been gathering funds to directly donate to help Gaza. A lot of young people get a large amount of their news about the genocide from TikTok. The government was able to pass this so suddenly because they took advantage of a genocide to push their own media censoring bullshit.
Twitter “X” whatever is run by a conservative bootlicking billionaire and has a huge problem with hate speech. People are not safe to move there. Same with Reddit and Meta. Facebook is outdated and flooded with government propaganda. Tumblr is the only place left after this and the average person sees Tumblr as less.
I pay for my therapy with Tiktok. I’m able to donate to help Gaza with Tiktok. I’m able to help more with groceries, get extra treats, buy games, support small businesses, gain more independence from my parents, and so much more. I’m genuinely devastated rn. This is devastating and it’s going to domino affect more things than you think.
#important#tiktok#tiktok ban#free gaza#support palestine#you are not immune to propaganda#if you think they will not censor you next#you are very short sighted

beyond midnight - save everyone the time and put in your ads that you endorse antisemitism. get the fuck out of here with a lizard people species being good with money. // so as anyone with a web browser can ascertain for themselves, as i did just now, this is a blatantly false characterization.
they have lizardfolk, a classic d&d race, not lizard people, which is a conservative conspiracy freakshow. and the species description is as follows:
Believed to be the descendants of a union between Dragons and Fae, Lizardfolk are fae-like creatures that share characteristics of both these races (though there are not many people who believe Dragons or Fae ever existed). They are small, humanoid creatures who were once part of a proud, warrior race but who wanted more than that for their people, and went ahead to claim it. They are largely vegetarian - their diet consisting of roots, fungi, plants, etc. - though it is not at all against their customs to find a Lizardfolk that does eat meat. Unlike most other species, Lizardfolk don't often live in family units once their children are old enough to strike out on their own. They dislike being indebted to anyone, and will always pay their debts off in a timely fashion.
this is not antisemitism any more than "a lannister always pays his debts" is antisemitism. if you're going to try to stir up drama against someone you dislike, you could at least pick something difficult to debunk.
i wish burnie would bump this to the front of the queue to spare everyone a little misinformation, but alas, that would rob her of too many submissions and too much site traffic i'm sure.
My pronouns are they/them.

From the piece:
“This dismissal – along with Hunter Biden’s conviction based on evidence taken from the laptop – is a vindication for Mr. Giuliani and Mr. Costello as well as all of the media outlets who broke the laptop story in 2020 and suffered orchestrated censorship by social media, the leftist mainstream media, and others who engaged in election interference,” Giuliani’s attorney Joe Sibley said in a statement to The Post.
And just a side note for those who follow my blog and have seen me try to share links to conservative podcasts from Rumble.com. I shared the above article from the NY Post, by copying the web address from the address bar in the browser while viewing the NY Post website. Then clicking the share link button on the Tumblr dashboard, and pasting in the link. Then click "insert" in the dialog box that pops up, which then includes the original headlines, by-lines and photos from the publication. Here, it worked flawlessly, and results in a useable link, where the entire graphic becomes a link to the original article. Try to share a conservative podcast from Rumble using the exact same procedure and, not so much...
Censorship is not Democracy, it's Fascism.

(For context my dad has only a very basic travel english vocabulary and is also really conservative)
So we're in this room and we open the TV and my dad thinks "hey lets watch a TV channel from our country online" so i open the TV web browser for him and give him the remote.
Well, someone who had previously used the TV had set a speed dial bookmark to a site called videojizz. My dad has presumably never encountered the word "jizz" before ans who knows maybe he thought of jazz idk. Regardless, be it on purpose or on accident, im not sure, he clicks on it. Before the site fully loads, i go to do another task and leave him to it. 3 seconds later i hear "OH its a pornography website"
He exists and as the designated tech person i come back and properly select the search bar and search for our thing
But it was really fucking funny to me on the spot

That's weird. If you're logged in it should just be a regular tumblr post. Let's try again.
https://www.tumblr.com/centaurianthropology/172451529095/olderthannetfic-maleccrazedauthor?source=share
the tldr of it is that the censorship was with the intention of "protecting children" and it mostly effected slash and femslash communities. AO3 was created so that conservatives with too much power can't erase giant swaths of fandom again because they don't like that queer sexuality exists. Ao3 has a robust rating system and tagging system to keep kids out of fics they're not supposed to be in.
The app won’t let me open it so my only option is to copy/paste the link onto the browser which then asks me to log in and takes me away from the post. It’s either brilliant web design or I’m just bad at technology 🤪

What's IA and why is it relevant? Lol
So I'm gonna answer this in good faith, but I will point out that this is a very weird query to send to a stranger. This is the kind of basic research you should do on your own whenever you encounter topics you don't understand. Like, if you're at the bare bones basic, starting point of a discussion, it is actually very rude to walk up to a stranger participating in that discussion and ask them to give you the primer. Don't do that online, certainly do not do that in meatspace. Your teachers and professors are paid for their time to educate you, random strangers are not and unless they've clearly and openly signaled they're available to provide that kind of barebones, basic primer? Exceedingly rude to just feel entitled to demand that explanation from them.
If you don't know where to start, start with google. I know, google is not great these days, but you can add ?udm=14 to the base google URL to get the strict results, no AI slop added. Or you can bookmark this:
From a basic google search you can then go to wikipedia for a more in depth primer, and hunt down the sources and citations to track down more thorough explanations and resources.
Once you have a more nuanced understanding of the topic you can also search for forums and communities where the topic is discussed and track down more resources there if you need them.
But you have to do it. Because you have to be responsible for your own learning.
And also because asking random strangers, disregarding the matter of manners entirely, subjects you to their bias. Case in point, I will, as I said, answer the query in good faith, but that's a good faith answer with my bias. And because they're my bias, I can't signal them out for you. I might not even know they're biases.
Do yourself a favor and get in the habit of not delegating all your perspectives and opinions to others. Your very sense of self is built in your convictions. You become the person you want to be, by sculpting yourself with knowledge. You do yourself a disservice by letting other people determine who you are and what you should think.
That said!
IA stands for the Internet Archive, which you might know for their URL, www.archive.org They're a US based non profit organization dedicated to archival work effort. Their most famous and well-known project is the Wayback Machine, a webcrawler archive that maintains records of a good chunk of the lightnet. The lightnet, surface web, indexable web or accessible web is the part of the internet that can be reached through the use of standard, common web tools like browsers (windows edge, google chrome, mozilla firefox, etc) and search engines (google, bing, duckduckduck, etc). This is the thing that a lot of people are worried about being lost, since a good chunk of the last thirty years of the internet no longer exists or is accessible anywhere else. They also curate digital collections of materials otherwise unavailable to wider audiences, like out of print books, music, tv shows, and other media.
The Internet Archive is relevant because it is a well-established, well-known institution in the sphere of conservation that plays a crucial role in the preservation of modern, contemporary history. They have under their stewardship countless, invaluable assets that are simply not available anywhere, and they are one of the most public, vocal advocates for digitalization of and, in their view, access to information.
The conversation surrounding access to information and also accessibility of resources as well as the crucial role libraries play in their communities, often in the physical world and which cannot be digitalized by their nature as a Third Space, is a nuanced, often thorny one. Mostly because people whose idealism stops at ideas and has never contended with the practical application of any of those ideas, are very bad at understanding that they live in a nuanced, imperfect world and there is no true one size fits all solution to literally anything.
This particular group is having A Really Rough Time handling the fact their darling IA fucked up spectacularly in a preventable, observable way, and are trying desperately to silence any criticism about the IA leadership - which is... flawed, to say it politely - by screaming about bootlicking and fantasizing about The Great Revolution that will surely come one day to fix all of their problems.
It's all very Evangelical, if you ask me about it.
But then, most Americans are Culturally Evangelical and don't even realize it. So!
It's what it is.

I decided to email instead of call, which might be less effective? not sure. but anyway here's the script I cut and pasted together if folks wanna borrow it:
The Kids' Online Safety Act seeks to address legitimate harm, but is written in such a way that it allows trans and LGBTQ youth to be exploited for cheap political points. KOSA is supported by right-wing groups that have campaigned against LGBTQ rights for decades, like NCOSE and Heritage Foundation, explicitly because it will allow conservative State Attorneys General to crack down on LGBTQ content under the guise of “protecting kids"; it has been roundly condemned by a broad coalition of civil society, LGBTQ rights, human rights, and racial justice organizations as well as parents of transgender children. If passed, this bill will have deadly consequences for the most vulnerable people in our society, especially transgender youth, who already face disproportionate rates of violence, discrimination, self-harm, and who are actively being targeted by extreme right wing legislatures and attorneys general. In addition, KOSA will interfere with the broader public’s First Amendment right to receive information. The steps that services will take to limit this information for minors is likely to limit access for all users, because many services will not be in a position to know whether their users are children or adults. It is a massive overreach to include— without full discussion and within must-pass legislation—a law that requires web browsers, email applications and VPN software, as well as platforms like Reddit and Facebook, to censor an enormous amount of truthful content online. While we understand the desire for Congress to do something impactful to protect children online before the year’s end, KOSA is the wrong choice. Please stand against this dangerous piece of legislation.

Fuck this bullshit by Meta and Google! I barely use Facebook or Instagram already. And I just downloaded the DuckDuckGo search engine app and deleted the Google search app on my phone. Will also switch to DuckDuckGo on my web browser. Added bonus, it’s a search engine that does NOT track your private information, unlike Google.
This Canadian is telling Meta and Google to go fuck themselves, eh. But politely and nicely. There are national stereotypes about the Canadian national temperament to consider.
P.S. This is also bad for Canadian Facebook users who’ve been radicalized by Facebook’s algorithm. I have a longtime dear friend (who may at some point become an ex-friend, if I run out of patience with her racism, homophobia, and transphobia) who gets most of her news from Facebook. There are some nutty Canadian news outlets, but they’re not as prevalent as in the USA.
The Canadian media isn’t necessarily liberal, but the conservative-leaning news outlets aren’t as extremist as, say, Fox News in the USA. If she’s on Facebook and soon the only news articles coming across her dash will be American, there goes the last chance of her being exposed to news that has some small level of objectivity.
