Say Yes to Me | Maki Zenin x f!Reader
Part 1
Being in a long-distance, backstreet relationship with Yuta wasn't easy. Not only there was nobody who you could talk to about your relationship, you also let Yuta did what he wanted to avoid arguments. That was until Maki noticed what was happening and reminded you that relationships weren't supposed to be like that... and that you deserved better.
Featuring: Yuta Okkotsu, Nobara Kugisaki

A/n: the amount of time i play Say Yes to Heaven on loop while writing this is uncounted. it's painful to write this because i love yuta, i love maki, and i hate cheating. but here we are... i just love the idea too much to actually abandon it :" also this is not beta-read so sorry for any errors

Long distance relationships are not for everyone, especially not for you. Ever since your boyfriend, Yuta, went abroad for an exchange study, you’ve been nothing but miserable. You both have only been dating for around three months. Being left behind as he went away is definitely not the plan. He also took the opportunity so suddenly, leaving you no room to talk about it.
Another thing that bothered you as well is how Yuta wanted to keep your relationship a secret. You didn’t know the reason behind it, but he asked you one day if you’re alright with it. Blinded by your new-found love, you said you were okay with it, but now you regretted saying yes. Nobody knew you were dating Yuta. There’s nobody you could talk to when you miss him, or when you just had a little argument with him over the phone. Sure, people knew you two were close. However, they saw you both as close friends, not romantic partners. So, whenever your friends or your family overheard your arguments with Yuta, or whenever they accidentally read your text message with him, they just assumed you both were keeping the friendship sailing.
You were not alone, but you still felt lonely sometimes…
…until Maki shot you the question.
“You’re dating Yuta, aren’t you?”
Your eyes bulged as she stared back at you with her piercing gaze. You two were just hanging out after class in your shared apartment’s living room. You averted your eyes towards the laptop in the coffee table, displaying a movie you were just watching with her.
“Oh, you don’t have to answer, I already know.”
“H-how did you know?” You couldn’t help but cave in, turning your attention back to her.
Maki grinned, “So, you really are dating him…”
Your face grew hot as it felt like steam was coming out of your ears. Maki was only teasing you, yet she managed to make you spill the truth.
“Maki!” You threw a pillow at her. “Stop messing with me.”
Maki laughed, “Sorry, you’re just too cute when you’re flustered. Also, it’s kind of obvious, don’t you think? All the quarrels, all the night calls, exchanging memes everyday.”
“Nobara sends you memes everyday and you’re not dating her.”
“Yeah, cus I don’t fancy her.” Maki tilted her head. “So, why do it backstreet? Did Yuta ask you to keep it a secret?”
You sighed and nodded. Maki hummed, and seemed to have predicted this answer as well.
“I bet it sucks… probably that’s why you look like you’re constipated every few days.”
“Shut up!” You snorted. Maki had a really weird way to lighten up the mood, which you appreciated. You found her words funny sometimes.
“It’s true! I noticed because every time you fought with Yuta, you always looked so gloomy… almost too gloomy. That’s why I thought you both are dating. Yuta and I fought all the time, but none of us became that gloomy. That’s no friendship behavior, that’s lovers behavior.”
You hugged your knees and rested your chin on top of it. “We’ve only been dating for six months now, but it doesn’t feel… real. We’ve only gone out for a date no more than five times before he went abroad. There’s a thirteen hour time difference between us, so it sucks.”
Again, Maki didn’t say anything. Her gaze was fixed on you, hand combing her ponytail. You could feel her knees bounced from how close you both sat next to each other in your small sofa bed.
“Then why are you still holding on?”
“Well… because I lo-like him,”
“Hmm… It reeks of second thoughts here…”
You chuckled. “Don’t be like that, Maki. He’s your friend too.”
“A dumb one. How can he keep you, his girlfriend, as a secret? I don’t understand! If you’re my girlfriend, I’ll take you on dates and show the world how gorgeous you are.”
“Maki…”
“What? I might need glasses everyday, but that doesn’t stop me from recognizing a real beauty.”
Truth to be told, Maki’s words made your stomach flutter. It had always been that way, especially when she’s telling you how beautiful you were. You always thought she was just good with her words, but that might not be the case. Or you hoped so. If Maki’s words could lift you up during your worst days, then you would bask in it even when your heart told you not to.
· · ─────── ·𖥸· ─────── · ·
“I’m so sorry, (Y/N). How can I make it up to you?”
Usually, you would actually think of something Yuta could do to make you feel better. However, it was the third time he forgot your date night even though he was the one who initiated it. His reason was his new friends were taking him to watch a basketball match. You were tired of having to find a solution for problems between the two of you.
“You know what, forget it. It’s fine,” you sighed. “Enjoy the game.”
“I’m so sorry, (Y/N). We’ll watch the movie next weekend, how does it sound?”
“Sure!” You tried to make your voice sound cheerful, but you didn’t smile at all. It’s alright, your boyfriend couldn’t see you.
You exchanged ‘love you’s with Yuta before hanging up the call. You sighed again, wanting to throw your phone against the wall. You were frustrated, there went another good opportunity to spend time together watching a movie while doing a video call. You didn’t know what to do.
“Damn, I’m surprised you just let him do that. Ditching you on a date night? Scandalous.”
Your head turned so fast to see Maki leaning against your door. You thought you were alone. Nobara was out to do her homework with her friends. You also hadn’t seen Maki since you came back from groceries shopping, but then again you didn’t check inside her room. You just assumed she was out with her friends as well. Obviously, you were wrong because she had somehow sneaked into your bedroom.
“I don’t need your teasing right now.” You stood up and walked towards Maki, about to push her out.
“I’m not teasing you. I’m just telling you the truth, he’s not supposed to do that.” Maki’s hands gripped your wrists gently. “It’s a jerk move. You shouldn’t let him do that.”
“I just… I’m tired of fighting, okay? I want us to be okay and not have arguments.”
“That’s not how relationships are supposed to work. You have to be clear about what you want, be honest with yourself. Don’t let your partner decide what’s acceptable and what’s not. If you keep doing that, you’ll lose yourself.”
Your heart was pounding inside your chest because you realized Maki was right. Most of the time, you let Yuta do what he wants to end an argument. No, there was no shouting, no yelling at each other. Yuta was still being his usual, soft self. The distance between you and him also made you realize how good he was at twisting his words. He got you wrapped around his fingers.
“You look like you’re about to cry.” Maki pointed out.
“Maybe because I want to.”
Maki looked at you with sympathy in her eyes. She muttered a small “come here” and pulled you into a tight hug. Your height difference made you feel so small in her arms. You were engulfed in Maki’s scent, sweet blackberry and citrusy orange blossom. You couldn’t help but let your tears roll down your face in silence, nuzzling your face under Maki’s chin. It wasn’t a rare occasion, really. Maki was the oldest girl living in your apartment, and she’s also the most mature one out of the three of you. She had comforted you and Nobara multiple times before.
This time, Maki let you cry for a while before lowering her head. Her lips were next to your ear when she asked you, “Do you know what can make you feel better?”
You sniffled, “W-what?”
Maki slightly pulled away, now looking down at you as she held your face in her hands. Her thumbs wiped the tears off and she leaned in. You quickly closed your eyes, your heart was beating like crazy inside your ribs. You felt Maki’s lips touch your forehead so softly and lingered for a moment.
“M-Maki…”
Maki shushed you as her kiss trailed down to the tip of your nose, then to your cheeks. Yes, Maki had hugged you before, but she had never kissed you in any kind of way. You didn’t realize you were zoning out until Maki tilted your chin up.
“Do you trust me?”
You wanted to say no, it felt so wrong. You were fully aware that you’re on the edge of betraying your boyfriend… but you couldn’t help it. Your body was burning, you needed someone whom you could reach, someone to hold you, someone to touch you.
“Y-yes.”
The moment Maki’s lips crashed against yours, your hands crawled up to touch her face… then it moved to slightly tug her hair, evoking a small chuckle. Maki’s hand traveled down your shoulder and towards your back, pulling you even closer to her. You gasped, letting her tongue slip into your mouth. Maki smirked as she successfully drew a soft moan out of you.
“M-Maki…” You breathed out.
Again, she just shushed you. “Don’t think, just feel it.”
You whined as she continued to deepen the kiss. You hated to admit it but Maki was a good kisser. Her touch left you feel powerless, as if you’d dissolve into nothingness if you let her go.
“Maki…” You broke the kiss, staring up at her. “Why… did you do that?”
“‘Cause I know you needed that, (Y/N).”
“What… I, I…”
Maki pecked your nose and tilted her head, a sincere smile plastered on her face. “I make you nervous, don’t I?”
“Well, of course you do!” You stomped on her feet out of annoyance. She just chuckled and leaned in to leave more kisses all over your face.
“My precious (Y/N)...”
“I’m home!”
You jolted as you heard Nobara in the living room. Maki seemed to not care, because she kissed you on the lips softly once again. Then she pulled away, leaving you empty and cold. Since when did Make feel so warm?
“Follow your feelings, (Y/N),” Maki said, turning the door handle. “Listen to your heart.”
· · ─────── ·𖥸· ─────── · ·
Days after days passed since the night Maki kissed you. She still acted normally as she would, but you couldn’t keep your composure around her. Nobara noticed your strange behavior, but decided not to pay attention to it. She just assumed Maki caught you doing something and you were embarrassed because of it. Thank goodness for that, because you didn’t think you could explain to Nobara if she asked about what happened to you and Maki.
Yuta kept his words, he was there for your next video call date. You wanted to watch a Disney classic, but he persuaded you to watch some Pixar movies instead. To avoid having a useless argument which could possibly threaten your date night, you let him choose his movie. As you were watching one of the Toy Story movies, your mind wandered to the night where you were pressed against Maki. How she gently yet passionately kissed you.
“That’s not how relationships are supposed to work… If you keep doing that, you’ll lose yourself.”
You crossed your arms and frowned, thanking the gods that Yuta was too immersed in the movie. You just gave up on what you wanted and let him decide based on what he liked. Even though she was in her own room, you couldn’t help but feel her piercing gaze at you.
“Follow your feelings… Listen to your heart.”
Guilty. That was what you were feeling ever since you let yourself kiss Maki back. You had betrayed your boyfriend. You kissed another person despite knowing that you were in a relationship. You slumped back against your pillows, resting your head against the headboard. You didn’t know how to tell Yuta. You didn’t know if you should tell him.
Now, that’s bad, you thought to yourself. You wanted to keep your little secret from Yuta. A part of you cursed at yourself for what you had done, but the other part argued you only did that because you felt lonely. Yes, Yuta was your boyfriend but Maki was also right. To some extent, Yuta was selfish.
The credits rolled and you saw Yuta yawning on the right top of your laptop screen. You checked the time and it was 12.45 AM on a Sunday, so it was 11.45 AM on a Saturday for Yuta.
“Well, thank you for watching the movie with me!” You said, trying to sound gleeful.
“Yeah, no problem!” Yuta replied. He leaned back on his chair while picking up his phone. “By the way, isn’t it like, really late right there? Aren’t you sleepy?”
“Well, I want to be with you.”
“Baby,” Yuta cooed, “For real, though. You look really tired. Why don’t you sleep, hm?”
“...You’re going out with your friends again, aren’t you?”
Yuta smiled as his eyes were glued on his phone. “Yeah, we’re trying out this new restaurant down the street.”
You swallowed hard and lowered your head. “I thought we could chat for a while… It’s been awhile since we talked face to face on a video call like this.”
“I’m so sorry, baby… We can talk again tonight, how about that?”
“I don’t know… I have class tomorrow morning, right?”
“Hmm, that’s right. How about if we call at 11 AM in your time zone. It’ll be 10 PM here, so it won’t be a problem.”
“Alright,” you sighed, defeated. “Well, see you later, then.”
“See you later, baby! I’ll send you pictures, okay? I love you!”
“Love you. Bye.”
You clicked the hang up button and shut your laptop down. You were disappointed but not surprised. Yes, you were tired and sleepy but you stayed up just to be with Yuta. You wanted to talk to him before you go to bed but he chose his friends over you. You clenched your jaw, trying to stop the tears from coming out.
It’s okay, you’ll talk to him when you wake up later… It’s alright, he’s just eating out with his friends…
…but why does it hurt? Why do I feel so lonely?
You put away your laptop and left your bed. You sneaked out of your bedroom, trying not to make any sound so you wouldn’t wake anyone. Fortunately, Maki’s room was right next to yours so it wasn’t difficult to sneak out and sneak in. You twisted the knob open and slipped in.
Maki had turned off all of her lighting, but you could see her sprawled under her duvet, scrolling on her phone. She noticed you were standing in the middle of the room, rigid posture and fists were clenched tightly. She immediately sat up and opened her arms, motioning for you to come to her. You dashed and fell into her hug, burying your face on the crook of her neck and letting yourself cry. She held you tight, one hand on the back of your head while the other rubbed your back.
“Darling, it’s alright… I got you… I got you…” She whispered.
You both stayed in that position until your tears dried and you were left with hiccups. Maki gently maneuvered your body until she got you under the duvet. You kept clinging onto her as she brought you down to the bed. You laid there in her arms, letting Maki’s fingers run through your hair.
“I-I’m so… s-sorry…”
“Hey, it’s okay, yeah? You don’t have to explain anything,” Maki whispered. “Go to sleep, (Y/N). I’ll be right here when you wake up. Then, we can talk. Okay?”
You nodded and closed your eyes. Maki planted a chaste kiss on your forehead before resting her chin on top of your head.
That night you fell asleep in Maki’s arms. It was nothing out of the ordinary, you’ve slept together with Maki before and sometimes you two cuddled. Yet it felt completely different from usual.
As you drifted off to sleep, you could hear Maki mumble.
“Sleep tight, my precious (Y/N)…”

I am once again BEGGING for fic writers to cross-post their fics on AO3!
Tumblr media
Why, you ask? Well, off the top of my head:
AO3 has filters and skins that can make it more comfortable for readers to view long-form works (or works of any length, really)
Tumblr can glitch and reset to the main feed when someone hasn't finished reading a fic yet, and finding it again can be tricky
Some people don't use tumblr at all and cross-posting onto another platform can help increase readership
It's easier for readers to subscribe to your fic for updates on AO3, especially if they can't sign up for a taglist And you don't have to juggle a taglist for every fic/chapter!
AO3 is an ARCHIVE. They are never going to delete your work or account because someone falsely reported you, or because an author got upset about fanworks. Even better, AO3 has a legal defense team in place to help if you're accused of violating copyright laws!
I promise you, I've experienced all of these benefits (other than the legal team, fingers crossed!), including when tumblr shadowbanned my alt account and AO3 is the only place where I got views and interaction. I highly recommend it!
In summary, PLEASE put your works on AO3! Getting an account is a bit of a hassle, but the wait time is short and you're preserving your work for the future.

Does anyone know of a good AO3 Reader app on Android that is customizable and isn't filled with ads every 5 pages?
I'd even take something I'd have to pay for, granted I could actually pay for it.
I used to use Archive Reader which has an option to remove ads, but the payment only accepts card and is outside of the US, which means I just cannot pay for it.
This used to be on the play store but got delisted for whatever reason, and now my fic reading experience is awful on mobile.

Please be respectful to people who dislike Helluva and Hazbin. A lot of their critiques are valid. As long as it's not for a gross reason like hating it out of homophobia or something, at least debate civilly if you're not going to agree to disagree.

Here’s the American Southern (Confederate) version of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich and Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna the Elder…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is Robert Toombs and his beloved wife Martha Juliann (who went by Julia) Debose Toombs. Toombs was the first Confederate Secretary of State under Jefferson Davis. The bits of pieces I learned about them, they remind me of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich and Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna the Elder.
Julia and Maria “Miechen” in particular could honestly be twins. It’s kind of frightening. Julia was a great hostess and was very intelligent, but she had a mean streak. She strongly dislike Edwina Reagan, the Confederate Postmaster’s (John H. Reagan) wife, because Julia thought she wasn’t very educated and looked down on her. She, along with her husband, talked trash about Davis too. Toombs was still pissed off that he lost the presidency to Davis (by making a complete fool of himself by drinking too damn much at the time!).
While Robert was highly intelligent, a loving friend, a loving husband, and loving father, he was also a handful. He was very sarcastic and argumentative and loved the bottle too much. The only comparison I can make with Robert and Vladimir is that they had strong personalities. And possibly the wish to get higher office (The Confederate Presidency in Robert’s case and being Tsar In Vladimir’s case).
However, the Toombs dealt with tragedy too. The only son Laurence died from scarlet fever in childhood. Their daughters, Mary Louisa and Sarah, both died from childbirth. So this is where my sympathy lays with the challenging couple.
