I remembered Gonta lifted the manhole cover, but I forgot that he was also the one who found the death road of despair. that has a certain poetic ring, given that his stated motive for killing in Chapter 4 is that he wants to prevent his friends from experiencing the despair of the outside world

this got me thinking. DRV3 is full of punishment for seemingly innocent actions and attempted good deeds. this must affect Gonta especially badly, since

it is his genuine desire and goal to be helpful

his background limits his social understanding and communication skills

he has to guess the appropriate course of action based on a framework of "proper behavior" that he has never before been immersed in or had to adhere to

how is Gonta to truly know why certain things are going wrong? does everything look like a tangled web of confusing actions and reactions to him?

after every attempt to help, is it possible he was in a mental war with himself? what he believes he should do, the textbook proper thing to do, what his classmates think he should do (they know better! obviously!). action-based approach, thoughtful approach, emotional approach ...

and still, no matter what he or his classmates do. it always goes wrong and it always gets worse
