However, realise that even the time to yourself is a time of value, and treasure those moments to focus and work on your own goals. It is easier to get lost and lose sight of your ambitions when with others who don't have the same aspirations as yourself. Use your own time to sit down and work out what you want to achieve and quietly put in the effort to win.
☆ Never being scared to ask questions
It can be quite daunting to ask questions in lectures, so I prefer to ask my questions during times that aren't forced into a short time interval, such as tutorials, office hours, and other forms of learning support that your university/college provides. This way there is no rush to answer my questions and take my time in working through concepts and ideas. Ask questions based on your own conclusions, questions that challenge current rules and perspectives. Think deeper into your lessons and seek to make use of every bit of information.

This is very much related to the point above, that being that personal interest really aids with the brains memory retention. The more things you approach with an enthusiastic attitude, the easier it is for your brain to remember and categorise. Having curiosity, even if it is forced, gives a great advantage where you seek to interconnect the information you learn with other data, and grow more networks of neurons that allows your brain to stay healthy and active.

Taiju—before you say anything, yes, this is weather data. No, it’s not boring. I just sent you the annual rainfall distribution broken down by district, elevation, and seasonal wind direction. Try not to panic. You don’t actually need to solve anything—I marked a couple anomalies in red and figured you might at least pretend to check my math. Consider it a challenge. Or a trap. Up to you.
Yuzuriha, the graph formatting was criminal, so I fixed it. You’ll probably still want to make it pretty. Just don’t convert the millimeters into hearts or some weird girl bs—I need the measurements intact.
Old man—I highlighted a section on the western escarpment’s deviation models. The local field station reports don’t match satellite-backed predictions from last year. I’m betting firmware lag on the remote sensors. Again. Classic.
Anyway, I didn’t just pull this out of nowhere. The water quality data connects directly to our outbreak mapping—we’re looking at possible cross-contamination between rainfall cycles and shallow well uptake. Correlation isn't causation, obviously, but I’m not ruling out runoff vectors until I test the pH variance post-monsoon. (Yes, this is still about the Ebola project. And no, I didn’t just want an excuse to email all three of you at once. Probably.)

Building at great height requires a massive amount more material than a typical high-rise. The upper storeys of super- and megatall buildings – which often include hundreds of metres of unoccupiable ‘vanity’ height – are buffeted by ferocious wind loads, with any sway at all introducing enormous destabilising forces into the structure below. They are home to hefty services that raise water, coolant, people and air to great heights, and these heights must be offset by deep underground foundations. ‘If you’ve ever seen any Revit models [of London high-rises, there is pretty much as much concrete in those foundations as there is above ground,’ says Natasha Watson, an engineer at Buro Happold who leads the firm’s efforts to measure and reduce embodied carbon in its projects. Even in areas with firmer ground than London, Watson explains, the awe-inspiring physics of skyscrapers has a huge material cost.
In an industry that is chronically lacking in transparency around its ecological, social and labour impact, it is difficult to find good data on the carbon footprint of skyscrapers. But the assessments that are available bear out the physics. Watson and her colleagues’ modelling shows that the efficiency of structural material usage, by floor area, drops above just three storeys. According to a 2015 study commissioned by the CTBUH, the whole life emissions of both energy use and materials for a 120m concrete and steel structure are nearly five times higher than those of its 60m equivalent. Who knows what the cost becomes at 600m?
It is not yet possible to avoid this cost by using less ecologically destructive materials. Although some 100m-tall timber buildings are beginning to appear, they are nowhere near the 600m ‘megatall’ mark. According to Watson, finding a sufficient volume and quality of reused steel and concrete structural components for such a large, high-performance building would also likely be challenging.
Even at city level, the huge carbon cost of skyscrapers fails to outweigh any potential benefits that they might achieve from restraining urban sprawl. A study in npj Urban Sustainability in 2021 showed that the most carbon-efficient way for cities to grow is by developing densely built low-rise environments. The carbon cost of taller buildings is greater than carbon savings from restricted land use. This means that high-density low-rise cities such as Paris are more carbon-efficient than high-density high-rise cities such as New York.

X-rays advance understanding of Earth's core-mantle boundary and super-Earth magma oceans
Researchers at the Department of Energy's SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory have revealed new details about Earth's core-mantle boundary and similar regions found in exoplanets.
The team, led by Guillaume Morard, a scientist at the University of Grenoble and Sorbonne University in France, used SLAC's Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) X-ray laser to investigate the behavior of molten rock under extreme conditions. The results were published in Nature Communications.
"This study marks a significant advance in our understanding of the Earth's deep interior," said collaborator and SLAC senior scientist Arianna Gleason. "The findings underscore the potential of advanced X-ray techniques to reveal the hidden secrets of our planet and beyond."
About 1,800 miles below Earth's surface lies a roiling region of magma sandwiched between the solid silicate-based mantle and the molten iron-rich core: the core-mantle boundary. It's a remnant of olden times, about 4.3 to 4.5 billion years ago, when the entire planet was molten. Although the region's extreme pressures and temperatures make it challenging to study, it contains clues about Earth's origin story and insight into the planet's internal processes.
To overcome this challenge, the researchers used advanced X-ray techniques to re-create the conditions expected in the mid to lower mantle of exoplanets two to three times the size of Earth. By using hard X-rays with higher energy levels than previously possible, researchers could see how atoms in the molten rock were arranged. The team also used computer simulations to compare with the experimental data, providing a comprehensive view of the molten silicates' properties.
One surprising result was about the role of iron in molten rock. Despite expectations, varying the iron content did not significantly change the rock's density. This finding is particularly relevant to our understanding of Earth's formation, where the surface was once molten rock and the density difference between crystalline and molten materials significantly influenced the planet's development.
The study also suggests that this atomic response to compression can change the properties of melts at the pressures expected to be found in the magma oceans of super-Earths, exoplanets with masses nearly three times larger than that of Earth. This could potentially impact their early development differently from smaller rocky planets, such as Earth and Venus in our solar system
The research highlights the importance of advanced experimental tools for studying high-pressure and high-temperature conditions. The team hopes their findings will lead to further development of these tools, opening new research avenues in Earth and planetary sciences.
"Now that we know we can get this quality of data and reach these conditions, we want to push further into exoplanet regimes," Gleason said. "The ability to generate pressures equivalent to three times Earth's mantle conditions is exciting. It extends our understanding of silicate properties under extreme conditions, which is crucial for both Earth and exoplanet studies."

The United States is grappling with significant water challenges, according to a new report from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), which reveals that nearly 30 million Americans live in areas with limited water supplies. The report, based on data from 2010 to 2020, highlights growing concerns over water availability, pollution, and climate change.
“Water availability is an issue everywhere in our country and beyond,” Lori Sprague, USGS national program manager for the water availability assessment, said in a webinar presenting the report. “It raises the question – do we have enough water to sustain our nation’s economy, ecosystems, and drinking water supplies?”
The findings show that approximately 27 million people lived in regions with “a high degree of local water stress” during the assessment period. The report also notes that socially vulnerable populations face a disproportionately higher risk of limited water supplies. Additionally, widespread contamination in aquifers and waterways exacerbates the issue, posing health risks to millions.
“Substantial areas of aquifers that provide about one-third of public water supplies have elevated concentrations of contaminants,” the report noted. These include arsenic, manganese, radionuclides, and nitrate, which disproportionately impact low-income and minority communities reliant on domestic wells for drinking water.
The report underscores the role of climate change in exacerbating water-related challenges. “The amount of water stored within and moving between vapor, liquid, and frozen components of the water cycle is shifting, with substantial consequences for water availability,” the agency warned. Climate impacts such as extreme heat, drought, reduced snow cover, and saltwater intrusion threaten water quality and availability nationwide.
“Climate change impacts water quality as well, with threats posed by rising water temperatures, flooding, and saltwater intrusion in coastal areas,” the report states. These changes also harm aquatic ecosystems, with species like the Arkansas River shiner losing more than 50% of their habitat due to supply and demand imbalances.

Building Out Chattanooga
Though not among the largest or fastest-growing U.S. cities, Chattanooga’s population has grown considerably in recent decades, rising from about 350,000 people in 2001 to 437,000 in 2024.
Nestled along the meandering Tennessee River and between the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and Cumberland Plateau, the Tennessee city prides itself on its scenic surroundings. Signs of development increasingly cover the area, as seen in this pair of images captured decades apart by Landsat satellites. The ETM+ (Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus) on Landsat 7 acquired the top image on June 18, 2001; the OLI (Operational Land Imager) on Landsat 8 captured the lower image on June 25, 2024.
The most visible changes include the construction of a large auto manufacturing plant and several residential neighborhoods in the city’s northeastern outskirts. There are also several new shopping complexes along Interstate 75 and more industrial facilities and residential neighborhoods southeast of the city around Lookout Valley. Across the state border in Georgia, extensive development is also visible along Route 2. New development often occurs along major roads and is mostly constrained to areas east of the Tennessee River and Chickamauga Reservoir due to the mountainous terrain to the west.
Much of the recent development is fueled by growth in Chattanooga’s manufacturing sector, which has rebounded over the past 15 years after suffering a period of decline between the early 1990s and 2010. Employment in durable goods manufacturing has been particularly strong, nearly doubling from 12,800 jobs in 2010 to 25,100 jobs in 2023, according to a 2024 report from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Azad Hossain, an environmental geoscientist at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, has been using Landsat observations to study changes in Chattanooga for decades. “Even in a mid-sized city like ours, urbanization comes with impacts on the environment,” he said, “including challenges with water quality, urban heat islands, urban forests, and air pollution.”
One recent University of Tennessee at Chattanooga project found that Chattanooga’s impervious surfaces more than doubled between 1984 and 2021, increasing by 33 square miles (85 square kilometers), while the city’s urban forests lost more than 37 square miles. Impervious surfaces are hard, non-porous surfaces that prevent water from soaking into the ground, leading to increased stormwater runoff and sometimes contributing to problems with flooding and water quality.
In a previous project, researchers used nearly four decades of Landsat observations to calculate that development added 4 square miles of impervious surfaces within 300 feet of streams, information that Hossain shared with urban planners, hydrologists, and city leaders in Chattanooga. Hossain and colleagues are also working on an ongoing project to compare Landsat observations of the Tennessee River and Chickamauga Lake with on-the-ground measurements of turbidity and chlorophyll as part of an effort to develop better ways of assessing seasonal variations and trends in river water quality based on satellite data. Note that the differences in the color of the water in the images shown above relate to sunglint and lighting conditions, not water quality.
“I actually get emotional when I talk to people about the deep historical record and perspective that Landsat makes possible,” Hossain said. Higher resolution data are available from commercial satellites, but Landsat allows people to look back decades to understand the broad scope of changes, he added. “I hope that other cities—both large and small—learn everything they can from Landsat’s long data record.”
