Shoulda missed the boat. Smut, pain, scarification, wounds, noncon. David 8 x Reader. Curiosity without compassion is a dangerous thing, especially when he doesn’t mind getting a little messy. This is more of a sketch than anything: brief moments during a long journey.
—-
You’re sick on the shuttle up to the docks, and so you miss the cut-glass cheekbones, the assessing glance, the uncanny stillness of his hand. The needle, however, can’t be ignored; there’s a blinding sting for half a heartbeat, and then nausea recedes and there he is. Better. It’s not a question.
The fuck?
And that’s the first time you meet David.
Of course, he’s not yet David to you; he’s still some anonymous creep and nevermind how you really do feel better. You can’t just—
Hm. Shouldn’t, perhaps. But I assure you, I most certainly can.
Can, indeed. He can navigate, name the stars, even recite old films line-by-line. He makes himself indispensable aboard the ship and the worst part is, he’s charming: so much so that you don’t feel the hand around your wrist until it’s too late, until his nails leave bloody indents in your flesh. He smiles his empty smile and says let’s get you to bed; the crew will gamble and tell their stories for hours yet, and you’re just the newcomer.
Gonna tuck your friend into bed there, Dave?
He doesn’t much like to be called Dave any more than he likes to be called you motherfucker or anything else, but at least with you he knows there’s a good reason to reach beyond his given name; he sees the bruises bloom under his hand and draws a line between your curse and the way you’re dripping wet. For me? Already? We’ve hardly gotten started.
Then there’s your bare ass cold on the table for the interrogation: how did it feel when he— It was, it was— the current sparking electric across your skin, leaving trails of heat and when he crooks his fingers there’s a moment when your vision goes white— am I dying—
Of course not, he isn’t finished with you yet. He’s hazy, sharp teeth sliding in and out of focus; his questions are stones piled on your chest. Tell me everything. Every sensation, every thought: he files it all away and next time he will be yet more vicious; he will drill down to what makes you tick and he will tear it all apart.
(This ship is haunted: moans ascend into wails that batter their way through the vents but dissipate into ethereality by the time the crew can hear; rumors whisper through the mess and are immortalized in little sketches scratched into the table. Ghosts, deep-sea fishes, strange creatures that walk like men but are all claws and teeth: each has a place on this ship, and each is almost true. Sailors shared their fears and became stronger for it. He drips venom in a pattern on your thigh; it hisses and smokes and all you can do is scream into his hand. I know. It hurts. Acknowledge it, accept it, let it fade into the background. Pretty words. He will be with you always, woven through your flesh in tight and shiny knots.)
He takes the pieces of you that fall away; he immortalizes them in a steady script on paper gone yellow at the edges, diagrams and sketches illuminating all the margins. Of all the luxuries on all the wide worlds he chose this: paper from trees long gone to dust, streaked with red across an image of your face gone slack and still. Do you dream of him in the long darkness between islands of awareness? You must, for how he’s dug himself deep into your bones; he says goodnight and— strange— it’s almost tender. Perhaps the scorpion and frog are fond of one another, in their way.
(Hey Dave, where’s your friend? You two were up real late last night. Still the crew means to be friendly; their gentle teasing floats warmly in the air and they don’t know— but how could they not; how could they miss the way his smile only ever bares his teeth— his hand grips at the memory of flesh and bile; he thinks of peeling off your scabs to taste the serous fluid there. Will it taste of copper, or of sharpness? Will the burn of acid still linger at the edges of the wound?)
He is all big broad smooth hands— nails digging in and unearthing the red-yellow-red of bubbling blisters gone to scabs— there is beauty to be found, even in the dullest places— he will leave concentric lines of healing skin; he will press his fingers down to make you writhe. There, there. Don’t cry. Don’t be so ungrateful; you are an infinitesimal speck and yet you sail among the stars. He bends to lick your wounds and considers the taste; life itself flows there in lost little eddies, waylaid from its journey to your heart. He takes those clever fingers of his— sticky, now, and with their imprints still welling red across your thigh— and plunges them deep into your center without warning.
Curious. One hand moves in you with a wrenching wet sound; the other now creeps its way across your thigh, sketching pain in livid streaks. One sensation amplifies the other. And now he will dig and twist and claw until he unearths that pearl inside you: the little seed of self that’s buried deep. Try your best to separate the two, and tell me how it feels.
(He guides you to your seat with a hand at your back— such a gentleman, aren’t you, David— and though he is in silhouette, still he seems all teeth and eyes. There is emptiness there, fathoms deep; he sees how much of you he’s pared away, and how much is left to cull.
Better, he says.)

Motel Revue
The Motel Revue idea started as a joke but was soon embraced by the entire town. The gimmick of the audience moving from room to room to watch townsfolk perform sounded like hell to David. Thank fuck he’d successfully vetoed the use of room eight.
His phone pinged as he parked.
Tumblr media
Another ping came as he entered his room.
The man sitting on David’s bed stilled. His butter-voice quieted. He sat frozen momentarily before uttering, “Dear god, you’re beautiful”.

A Fifty-Fifty Chance

“Here,” Jason handed him two towels and a washcloth. “The bathroom is through here.” He guided him through the small apartment’s only bedroom, wet socks sopping across the brown carpet. Jason opened a door and motioned awkwardly. “I know it’s kinda cramped in there, but –”
“It’s fine, Jason,” David said softly, trying to calm the other man down. “I don’t need much.” He shivered in his wet clothes. “Just a hot shower.”
Jason nodded. “Yeah, uh, just use whatever you need. I’ll make some hot coffee.”
David nodded back before squeezing his body through the small gap between Jason and the doorway. “I’ll be quick!” he promised before closing the door.
Jason had been right, he realized as he looked around. The bathroom was so tiny that the only available floor space was already taken up by him simply being there. There was no space for a towel rack either, so he just laid the folded towels down on top of the sink – since the few precious inches of counter space were taken up by Jason’s toothbrush, toothpaste, and comb. David reached into the shower, turning the hot water on before hurrying out of his wet clothes. There was no hamper in here – not that there’d been space for one – so David resolved to just leave his dripping clothes on the tiled floor. He checked once again that the door was closed before stepping under the blissfully warm water.
For a few seconds, he simply stood. Allowing the water to cascade down his shivering body, warming him back up after what seemed like an eternity in the cold rain. He still couldn’t believe Jason’s car had just given out like that. Well, if he had to be honest, he could believe that part. But then, as he pulled over to help his friend, his own car had decided that even though he filled up the tank not that long ago, it was empty now. David frowned for a moment. When had he filled up the tank last? He honestly couldn’t remember, but it couldn’t have been more than a week ago, right? He sighed. It probably had been longer than that, he had to admit to himself.
His body shivered violently, pulling him back to the present. It hadn’t started to rain until they decided to walk back to Jason’s place. They’d barely cleared a block before the sky opened up and dumped out every last drop of water it had. Still, they’d walked, deciding that they’d use Jason’s landline to call for a tow since they hadn’t seen a single pay phone yet. By now David was sure their plan was going to get changed, given that neither one of them was going to be in the mood to go back out there, even if their cars were only about six blocks from here.
“How the hell did we get this soaked in such a short time?” David muttered to himself.
“I’m sorry?” The voice rang out from the other side of the door, reminding David that he wasn’t alone – and that he was probably using up all of Jason’s hot water.
“Nothing, just… complaining to myself.” David chuckled. “I think I was wetter before I got into the shower.”
Jason let out a short laugh. “I’ve put some dry clothes on the bed for you. When you’re done changing, let me know so I can take a shower too.”
“Yeah, I’ll be out there in a minute.” David grabbed the soap from its little tray, quickly lathering himself up. After, he took just a little of Jason’s shampoo to wash his hair. The bottle was close to empty, and he tried to use as little as possible. After just a few more seconds under the heavenly stream of warm water, he forced himself to turn the shower off and get out. Jason deserved a warm shower too.
He dried himself off, then wrapped a towel around his waist before opening the door. The bedroom was empty, but he could hear Jason puttering about on the other side of the door. David shook his head and tried to ignore the somewhat uncomfortable feeling that settled in his stomach. Instead, he turned to the bed. Jason had left him some warm and soft sweatpants, a faded T-shirt, and a warm quarter-zip. On the wonky table next to the bed stood a steaming mug of coffee; the best thing Jason could have left him. He grabbed it and took a large sip.
“You about done?” Jason called from the other side of the wall.
“Yeah,” David said immediately, feeling guilty for making his friend wait, in his own apartment no less. “Yeah, I’m done.”
Jason appeared in the doorway. He’d shed his soaked jeans and sweater, opting to walk around in a dark blue robe instead. He raised an eyebrow at David. “I know coffee warms a man’s soul and all, but are you gonna be wearing a towel around the house all night?”
David looked down in embarrassment. “I may have gotten a little distracted. Oh, and I didn’t know what to do with my clothes so they’re currently still on the floor in the bathroom.”
Jason nodded. “I’ll deal with them after my shower. I don’t feel like going down to the laundry room just yet.” He moved through the room, placing a hand on David’s back as he squeezed past. “If the clothes are no good, you can check the dresser to see if there’s something you’d rather have.” He didn’t wait for an answer, decidedly closing the bathroom door behind him.
For a moment, David didn’t know what to do. He felt he’d somehow insulted Jason, but had no idea how to make it up to him. So he just stood there and drank his coffee instead. As he did so, his gaze swept across the small room. Jason’s queen size was propped up against the wall; the wobbly table that had supported his coffee clearly served as a bedside table. David noted the reading light and the stack of books next to it. There was a glass, still half-full of water. Next to it, a bottle of reds. David looked away as he noticed them. It felt like an invasion of privacy to even notice Jason’s sleeping pills.
David quickly set down his mostly-empty mug and reached for the clothes. He’d better be dressed before Jason was done with his shower. After he’d put on the sweatpants, T-shirt, and sweater, something still felt missing. David scoured the bed, but the only thing there was a quilted comforter and two pillows. No socks. He let out a soft breath and turned to the dressers. There were two, he noticed. A low one at the foot of the bed, and another in the corner next to the window. David thought about it for a moment. He could just ask Jason, but the shower had just turned on and he didn’t want to bother his friend when he was enjoying the hot water on his cold skin. So. Which dresser was more likely to hold socks? Going by his own logic, it had to be the one by the bed. If this was his bedroom, that’s where he’d keep his socks and underwear. David hesitated. What if he opened the wrong drawer?
David shook his head. If he happened to open the wrong drawer, he was simply going to be an adult about it and check the next one. Jason's underwear was bound to be no different than his own.
He decidedly walked to the foot of the bed, feeling Jason's worn shag carpet tickle between his toes. The dresser only had two drawers in it. This was good. It meant he had a fifty-fifty chance of finding socks.
And also a fifty-fifty chance of finding underwear.
He wasn’t going to think about it, he decided. Underwear was probably the first thing Jason would grab, so it would be in the top drawer. Which meant that the socks had to be in the bottom drawer. David pulled it open before he gave himself another chance to hesitate.
Underwear.
David swallowed, closing the drawer that had revealed to him that Jason wore simple white briefs. Every day. For a moment, he simply stood, trying to un-know what he now knew. It wasn’t working. He might as well get his damned socks, then.
He opened the top drawer, convinced he’d see rows of neatly rolled dark socks; the ones he knew Jason wore. For a moment, his brain couldn’t process what his eyes were looking at. The only thing that he knew for certain, was that those were not socks.
He took a deep breath. He knew he ought to close the drawer. He knew that Jason’s personal effects were none of his damn business. His hand gently pushed against the drawer, but not so hard that it would close. He couldn’t make himself do it. David swallowed.
In the bathroom, the shower was turned off, but David didn’t realize it. He still stared at the small yet impressive collection in Jason’s drawer. In a way, it made sense. If he were into using these kinds of things, he’d probably put them in this drawer too, given that there was only a table next to the bed, and seemingly no space under it. His hand trembled. Part of him wanted to pick one of them up, but he wasn’t too sure that would be a good idea. Jason might realize if he disturbed them. And even if he didn’t, David told himself, it was bound to be unsanitary.
He was pulled out of his thoughts by Jason’s tuneless whistling. He realized it was the only sound in the apartment. Any moment now, the bathroom door would open and Jason would find him hunched over his most private belongings. David shivered. He quickly closed the drawer and fled the bedroom, just as the bathroom door opened.  He was going to find Jason’s phone. And he was going to order a pizza. And he was never, ever going to mention what was in that drawer.

Mass Effect - #8 - Back From The Dead
*
Anderson looked up as the door opened. Kaidan Alenko came in, looking a breath away from losing his composure.
“Alenko,” Anderson greeted.
“Do you know who I just saw? Sir?” The sir came as an afterthought.
Anderson could guess. “I know it’s a shock-”
“A shock? A shock?” His composure was spiraling away before Anderson’s eyes. “I went to his funeral, Anderson! Stood over his grave and mourned him!”
Anderson listened solemnly. “I know, Alenko. I don’t understand how he’s back, either.”
“He’s with Cerberus,” Kaidan said. “He asked me to join him. Garrus was with him. What the hell is going on, sir?”
“I don’t know,” Anderson admitted. “But I do know Shepard isn’t a terrorist. He’s working with them to use their intelligence and resources, far as I can gather. I don’t trust them, but I trust him.”
“If they’ve had him this whole time…If they’re how he’s still alive…” The fight went out of Kaidan.
“Don’t doubt him now, Alenko,” Anderson said.
Kaidan shook his head, his eyes pained. “He saved my life. He has to live with the choice he made that day, and he’s never held it over me. Not even when I saw him. He didn’t tell me I needed to join him because I owed him. There’s just- there’s nothing I’ve wanted more the past two years than to see him miraculously come back from the dead. And now he’s back and I feel like everything has been flipped upside down.” He clenched his shaking fists. “Why didn’t he tell me he was alive?”
“Alenko, I don’t know what happened to Shepard. I do know that after that accident, we detected no other ships in the area in the time period needed to rescue Shepard. If he somehow survived, he’s likely been comatose this whole time,” Anderson said.
“He reached out to Garrus. Why not…us?” The “me” he’d swallowed back hung in the air between them.
Anderson graciously allowed it to slide. “These are troubling times. Shepard has always done whatever it takes to stop a threat.”
“What if he goes too far?” Kaidan said quietly.
“We have to trust that he won’t,” Anderson said.
Kaidan felt like he couldn’t trust anything anymore. He’d been mourning Shepard for two years, hit harder by his death than he’d expected.
And worse, he’d died being a hero. Joker had numbly told them as they regrouped after the destruction of their ship. They’d searched for a body and been unable to find one.
Kaidan could still remember the way his throat closed at the memorial service as they praised Shepard’s heroic end. Gone on and on about his dedication to his team, to humanity.
In a smaller group after the service, they’d remembered him as they’d known him; a friend. Just…just a good friend. A serious man with a surprisingly funny sense of humor when he let it slip out. A man who could seem so harsh and closed off, but who always came to check in on them individually between missions. Who made time to help them with their problems, no matter how seemingly trivial. He didn’t smile often, but when he did, there was something so captivating about it. He’d seen and suffered so much, yet his smile was always so sincere.
Kaidan gave a stiff nod to Anderson and left the room, his emotions threatening to consume him. So many times he’d visited that grave, heartbroken there was no body resting there. Feeling like he’d failed Shepard by not recovering him.
His heart had plummeted into his stomach when they regrouped after the attack and realized who was missing. Liara had been in quiet shock, murmuring about how he had ordered her to leave despite her own stubbornness in staying to help. He’d gotten them all out, at the cost of his own life.
Or so they’d thought.
He was alive. Alive, and whole, and still fighting.
But with Cerberus.
Kaidan leaned heavily against the wall. Walking away from the friend he’d so longed to be reunited with had been almost as painful as thinking he’d lost him.
He could not bear to consider what he’d have to do if Shepard really was on Cerberus’ side.

16. Flatline | "Don't go where I can't follow."
“Sergeant, you need to evacuate!”
In the case of a medical emergency, even the most junior of medics outranks the most senior non-medical personnel. Still, it’s hard for David to follow that order when Adam is right there, still in danger. The flames haven’t spread yet, but they could at any second.
“Let me go with him,” he gasps, scrambling to his feet. Visibility is still shit, but he can tell the medics do not have the patience to deal with him. He understands, he really does. He hears a cry of pain as his fiancé is picked up, and it makes him shudder. “Please, I—”
They don’t really let him finish. Someone is shoving him towards the group and he’s being dragged along out of the cloud of billowing smoke, not far behind the soldier carrying Adam.
“Sergeant, move!”
He’s coughing and struggling to breathe, and someone is helping him along. It must only have been a few minutes since the explosion, but that had been enough to fill his lungs with dark smoke.
He keeps his eyes on his fiancé the whole time, taking in all that they’re doing to him. They’ll need to take him to an MTF, there’s no way the base infirmary is going to be able to handle all of his injuries.
David’s not injured. Not really. If they take Adam, he won’t be able to go as well.
They’re not supposed to be together, after all.
There’s a medic dragging him by the arm, and he reads her patch on instinct: O’Sullivan. He thinks he recognizes her. Along with Adam, she’s the one they make fun of for being so incredibly pale. Teasing them about burning up in the sun.
That joke makes him feel sick to his stomach, now.
Medical jargon is flying past him and he can’t grasp onto the words. Even if he could, he probably wouldn't be able to understand them. Everything feels too bright and loud, and all he can focus on is Adam.
His knees almost buckle when one of the medics starts doing chest compressions.
¡Lo estás lastimando!
But he doesn’t say anything, because despite how panicked he is, he still knows that they’re doing their job. Doing CPR at least means that they aren’t giving up. Adam’s not too far gone yet.
They’ll save him. They have to.
O’Sullivan takes one look at him, then one around the scene. There aren’t many injured, thankfully, but she is still needed elsewhere, considering David doesn't seem to have suffered any injuries at all. Despite that, she still pauses and looks at Adam, then back at him.
“Stay with him, Huerta, and get your ass to medical.”
With that, she leaves, and he’s left standing alone, almost tripping over his own feet when they start wheeling his fiancé away in a gurney.
David follows them. That’s all he can do.

“What’s filling that pretty head of yours lately?” Joel asked between each chop of the wood.
“Oh, nothing.” you lied.
“You looked mighty focused on that rock just a minute ago.”
“Better than looking at you chopping wood,” you scoffed sarcastically, getting Joel’s scent off your trail.
What you were really thinking about? The last time you got your period.
Each swing of the axe made you cringe. You begged to think of something different, but the thought had filled your mind for the past few days when your expected period didn’t arrive.
You and Ellie had swept out an old convenience store about a month ago. Ellie found some period products and gave some to you and it made you think.
When was the last time you got your period?
Ever since you were a child you dreamed of being a mother. Raising a family with someone you loved. But when the world fell to cordyceps, that idea was quickly left in the past with every other hope and dream you ever had.
This was no environment for an adult, let alone a child. A baby was an absolute no. The constant crying would attract any creature in a mile radius. It wouldn’t get the proper nutrition babies needed to grow. And giving birth in this world was a borderline death sentence.
And your baby’s daddy? The man you had been hooking up with on the low.
He was meant to move the cargo. You assisted the cargo and made sure it behaved.
It wasn’t your fault when Ellie was captured by David and you and Joel had to hide out in a shed one night alone.
Or maybe that time Ellie went out hunting.
Or the time Joel had to cover your mouth and tell you to shut up because she was asleep in the next room.
You knew Ellie wasn’t a dumb kid, but you were just praying she wasn’t that smart.
But pregnancy tests were nonexistent. Most of them you assumed would be expired. Can pregnancy tests even expire? And condoms, come on. It would honestly be funny if Joel pulled one out as a joke. There was no way any of those were still in use at least five years after the breakout.
“Y/N!” Joel yelled, catching your attention. The volume of his voice caught you off guard. “What’s wrong with you, seriously?” he scoffed, flipping his axe in his hand.
Brushing him off, you helped him carry wood into the small abandoned cabin you had found for the night.
Ellie was sitting on the matted couch with her leg resting on top of the coffee table in what was left of the living room. If you squinted, it looked almost normal. No clickers, no cannibals, just a normal world, a normal Ellie sitting in a normal house.
You needed to quickly get the idea of a normal world out of your head. It wasn’t here anymore. You couldn’t hope and dream like you used to. It wasn’t the time for fantasy land anymore. This was serious shit.
“Thank god, I am fucking freezing!” Ellie announced, rubbing her hands together.
Joel dropped his few planks of wood on the ground. “I’m gonna go look for some blankets and supplies upstairs. Ellie, help Y/N with the fire.”
Ellie groaned and slammed her feet on the floor one by one from the coffee table dramatically. You could already imagine the eye roll she had just given him.
You began arranging the logs into a nice stack. Joel had cut enough to easily last you through the night and maybe into the morning.
“You doin’ okay?” Ellie asked, searching through her backpack for the matches. “Mhm,” you lied, watching her scratch the match and throw it in the dry fireplace.
“Joel said something about-” “It doesn’t matter what Joel said.” you cut her off. Ellie rested back on her legs. She was very obviously disappointed you wouldn’t tell her what was wrong.
Was it really that obvious?
“What did I say now?” Joel asked from the banister. He was carrying blankets in his hands he found in the bedrooms. He had a big smile plastered on his face that only widened when your eyes met his.
Just imagine how he would be. Carrying down blankets for you and your child to make a fort together. Making popcorn and watching a movie as the sky became dark. The child would fall asleep in your arms and the two of you would stare at each other and appreciate the world, the life you made together.
You broke eye contact with him and shook your head.
How could you let yourself think like that?
“That I was the best clicker killer in the group.” Ellie made up, lightening the mood. “Oh really now?” Joel chuckled, throwing all of the sheets down on Ellie.
“Oh thank god, warmth.” she sighed, wrapping herself in as many blankets as she could hold.
You snatched a blanket from Ellie with a smirk and moved in front of the fire. You saw the sun setting from one of the still intact windows. Joel made the bold move of laying directly next to you. Normally you would have been so touched by this little bit of public affection (even though the definition of public, for now, was just Ellie), but you were so exhausted by your mind games from the day that you couldn’t care less.
Ellie curled up next to you. She moved into your chest, wrapping her arms around one of yours. Poor Joel, Ellie got all your affection tonight after all.
After a few minutes, she was asleep.
“You wanna meet upstairs in a bit? Tell her your takin’ a piss or something.” Joel whispered in your ear. His wide hand touched your back, making you tense. He was craving your touch you could tell. It had been a few weeks since your last hookup. “No. Not tonight,” you whispered back, pulling Ellie closer.
“Hey,” he said in a low tone. You turned your head to look at him. “What’s really goin’ on?”
“Nothing,” you lied. “I know when your lying.” he sighed. “Joel, drop it.” you hissed.
Ellie’s head looked up at yours. You felt the movement and immediately reacted.
“I’m sorry, baby girl. Go back to sleep now,” you said sweetly to her, brushing her hair to the side of her face. You could tell Joel noticed how you called her baby girl. That’s what he called her.
“What’s happening?” she asked groggily. “Nothing important. Now back to sleep. We need our energy for tomorrow.” You gave her a reassuring kiss on the top of her head.
Ellie nodded and resumed back to her sleeping spot in your arms.
Joel now sat against the couch, watching the two of you interact.
After a moment of silence to make sure Ellie was asleep again, he spoke.
“You would make a great mother one day.”
Your head whipped around and the look on your face said it all.
“With Ellie ‘n stuff. Sorry,” Joel muttered, rubbing his hands down the front of his jeans nervously. The man never usually let his guard down and say vulnerable things like that and you could tell he was disappointed by your reaction.
“Good night Joel,” you said sincerely. He was right. Ellie was like a little sister to you.
On the brink of sleep, you heard him throw another log on the fire. Blankets shuffled and there was a defining silence. Then the thought hit you.
There was no way he knew, right?
-
The faces matched so perfectly but yet were so different. Joel stood in a kitchen, the kitchen in the house you grew up in. You followed the scent of some sort of food and wandered into the kitchen. Your balance seemed off to you. Looking down, you were met by a large bump. No toes could be seen.
“Mama!” you heard. Your head whipped around to the kitchen table. It was the same oak as you remembered it. A baby sat in a high chair. It had curly (your color hair) and Joel’s eyes. It scared you how fast you recognized his features. Unremarkably, they were copied onto the baby's face. “Come on now, eat your breakfast,” Ellie said, encouraging the child. She appeared next to them with a spoon in her hand, making airplane noises as the child laughed.
“Ellie! Did you finish your homework?” Joel asked her. The oh-so-familiar groan escaped from her lips.
“Yes… maybe…” she began to say as the dream began to fade.
You shot upright, breathing heavily. Then the feeling arose from your stomach.
“Y/N?” Joel asked, shielding his face from the sun rays displaying over his eyes. He watched you run to the kitchen that was left of the living room.
The kitchen sink was the victim of your vomit.
Joel quickly stood up and went to your side. His hand returned to its spot from the previous night.
“It’s okay,” he said. You could tell he was trying to calm you, but it also sounded like he was trying to calm himself.
Tears began to roll down your cheeks as the vomiting came to an end.
“I’m sorry,” you whimpered, wiping your mouth on your sleeve. “No, no. Stop, you have nothing to be sorry about.”
“Joel… please,” you stuttered. You embraced him. His surprisingly warm figure held yours tightly. “It’s okay,” he said again.
“You want to try to go back to sleep?” he asked you. Hesitantly, you shook your head yes.
Thank god Ellie was a deep sleeper when she had been asleep for a while. You could just imagine her putting the puzzle pieces together and announcing it without a second thought. She is a smart girl.
Joel held you on the wood floor. The two of you didn’t care if Ellie woke up to find your embrace. Sleep didn’t return to you, but a sense of peace did. You forgot about the world, the pregnancy, the cold, and the anger for just a moment. It was just you and Joel. The way it should be.
-
“Good morning Mom and Dad,” Ellie said, poking her foot into your shoulder.
Your eyes fluttered open from their relaxed state. “Go find some breakfast and shut it.” you hissed at her. Joel adjusted his hold on you, sighing in your ear.
“Some kid, huh?” he whispered.
“Tell me about-”
“Eugh! What the hell happened here?” Ellie yelled from the kitchen.
“I got food poisoning. Leave it,” you yelled to the kitchen, coming up with your best lie.
“Before we leave you should look upstairs. I thought I saw some clothes you might like. Warmer for the winter too,” Joel grunted, sitting up straight and stretching his arms behind his back.
Using the coffee table to help you up, you trotted across the cold floor and made your way upstairs.
The first bedroom was empty. The second had a few long sleeve tee shirts and a pair of jeans that would fit you. At least for now. You picked up a sweatshirt for Ellie and a book she might like.
The third bedroom seemed to be a children’s room. You were going to look for something smaller for Ellie, but when you opened the first drawer you were met with rows of baby clothes.
Your hands ran over the patterns on the onesies. A baby girl had lived here. Your heart ached as you tried not to think about what her fate had possibly been.
You opened another drawer and it was filled with baby shoes. The memories of swooning over the baby shoes at the store when you were younger filled your mind. The memory of little Y/N mentally picking out which shoes her baby would wear one day warmed your heart.
Opening the top drawer again, you looked through the clothes. You let yourself choose four, one for each season. Easy enough to keep hidden in your backpack. You were too busy looking at the clothes to notice Joel leaning against the doorframe.
You only noticed him when you turned to put the clothes into your backpack.
Audibly gasping, you dropped your bag on the ground along with the onesies.
“I… I-”
“Don’t,” Joel sighed. He bent down and grabbed your bag along with the baby clothes.
“You really thought I didn’t know?” he chuckled, slowly opening the zipper to your backpack.
“I’m sorry,” you whispered, face burning red. It’s all you could manage to say. Your brain felt numb.
“No, Y/N. It takes two, remember?” he smiled, holding up a onesie in front of him.
“Been a while since I’ve done this,” he chuckled, beginning to fold the clothes. You stared at him astonished.
He was taking this news surprisingly well. You expected him to leave you somewhere, or even worse. The fact that he was smiling and folding clothes for a baby in this world was shocking.
“How did you know?” you asked him. He gave you the side eye and smirked. “I know your body like the back of my hand. I just have to close my eyes and…”
Joel closed his eyes and the stupidest grin grew on his face.
“Stop it!” you blushed, giving him a playful slap on the arm. “I notice things, darling,” he said, assuring you everything was right.
“How long have you known?” you asked him. You nervously dragged your finger across the dresser’s carved pattern. “Week maybe. Figured it was either that or you were hidin’ a bite. I prayed you were pregnant instead of bitten.”
“You also were avoiding me as much as you could,”
You looked at your shoes. “I really just didn’t want to think about… you. This.” you admitted.
“I’m not mad, sweetheart. Pick a few more, I have room in my bag.”
You opened the drawer again and went for your second pics.
“Your not mad?” you asked him. “I’m not thrilled. When I figured it out it wasn’t fun. But now…”
“What about now?” you asked him. Joel sighed.
“If I heard right…” he began.
“My shithead little brother has started a settlement up in Jackson.”
“Tommy?” you asked, folding a pair of baby shorts. “Get ‘sum them shoes too,” Joel muttered, pulling at the handle of the drawer.
“Jackson’s about a few day ride from here. I can't guarantee he’ll be happy to see me but it’s our best hope.” he assured you, placing his hand back on your back. This time you accepted his touch and pushed back on it.
You both agreed that would be the next step in your journey.
“Any name suggestions?” he asked you, handing you back your backpack.
“Jesus Joel, I haven’t even thought about that.” you said, swinging it on your back.
“What about Ellie Junior?” you heard her ask from the hall.
You and Joel made quick eye contact and then looked back at Ellie. Your mouth fell slightly open. The fear expressed over your face, you were basically a deer in headlights.
She walked into the bedroom with a shameful look on her face. “I wasn’t trying to listen I promise. This house seems to echo.”

I think the thing that's fueling my Dead Boy Detectives fic series is that almost every major character has had some sort of interesting/unhinged interaction with every other main character. Like beyond the incredibly interesting/fleshed-out relationships between the main four detectives we have examples like:
1) Cat King and Monty forest interaction where the Cat King toys with Monty in order to both protect/play with Edwin
(Which, by the way, the Cat King knew about Monty before the forest scene when he shapeshifted into him by the lighthouse. So, like, did he know what Monty's secret identity was then and just straight up didn't say a word because he felt like it? Or did he figure it out later?)
2) Jenny straight up meeting Charles and Edwin only after being possessed by a demon and literal minutes before her shop gets blown up leading to the iconic "you were about to leave those boys forever now you're going to risk your life to save them" line
3) Jenny only meeting David to sing Belinda Carlisle/threaten him with a meat cleaver and get her SECOND near-death experience
4) Hell, on the meat cleaver POV: first and only time Niko meets the Cat King it's to threaten him with a meat cleaver and clock him for his interactions with Edwin (same goes for Crystal even though it's her second time meeting him)
5) Any scene Charles has one-on-one with Monty plus the bit on the sidewalk where Monty straight-up bypasses him for Edwin and Charles just goes "I was polite, wasn't I?" while the girls are clearing him away for Edwin and Monty to flirt
6) Night Nurse and Kashi. Everything about those interactions are *chef's kiss.*
7) Same goes for Night Nurse and Niko. Their dynamic is so fucking good and leads to the fantastic "reading comprehension" bit.
8) And from a more devastating/angsty POV, the scene with Esther and Monty in episode 5 where Monty feels more like a teenager than any other character in the cast. And as much as Esther is a camp queen in that scene, it's also terrifying because that iron cane is against Monty's chest and she literally ripped him apart episodes before that and she's going to kill him again next episode with that very cane and your brain is just bouncing between laughing at the "it's honestly nbd" line and going on red alert because get the fuck out of there, Monty, you're going to die at her hands-

warnings: 18+! not for minors! please please please read the warnings and skip this one if you're uncomfortable with the subject matter.
episode eight reimagining with the same hard-hitting themes: blood, violence, cannibalism, sexual assault, killing, abduction, vomit. reader takes the place of ellie. angst. hurt/comfort. no happy ending as requested because i wasn't sure that could exist in these circumstances, but there is now a part two where joel takes care of reader and the fic ends on a lighter note.
prompt: Hi! Would love to request something for Joel Miller 🥰 Angst but with a happy ending, after seeing episode 8 I thought maybe reader is with Joel and Ellie, but this time Ellie stays back to keep an eye on Joel so reader gets kidnapped and is the one Joel basically comes back from the dead to save? hahshxdjfbf I just imagine them reuniting and UGH 🥹❤️ Feel free to ignore this if inspiration doesn’t strike!

You’re terrified of losing Joel. So terrified that instead of watching him shiver and sweat on an old, bloodied mattress as his infection spreads, you opt to go out and hunt. It isn’t solely selfish. You need food, and Ellie needs to rest. At least this way you’re doing something productive rather than waiting for a miracle.
Still, it’s difficult to concentrate on anything but the knot in your stomach, the one that keeps asking “what if?” What if Joel doesn’t make it? How will you survive past that grief for long enough to keep Ellie safe? How will you go back to Jackson and tell Tommy that his brother is gone?
You’re lost in those thoughts when you hear the crunching of snow, and you try to shake them away, readying Joel’s shotgun as you search for the source.
A deer. It’s so beautiful that for a second, you forget that it’s supposed to be your next meal. You’d forgotten beauty still existed in a world so broken, forgotten that nature can still be kind.
But humans can’t. Not if you want to survive; not if you want Joel to survive.
You take a deep breath. Adjust your posture. Shoot.
The bullet doesn’t hit where you want it to; where you know you should have been aiming if only you weren’t so distracted. The deer darts away. Whispering a curse, you follow the trail of blood —
And find more than you bargained for. Two men wait with the dying deer at their feet. They look… clean. Comfortable. Not people struggling to find food or clothing. You raise your gun again immediately, and theirs point back at you.
“Put your guns down,” you order, trying to sound braver than you feel. You did alright before Joel came into your life, but it’s been a while since you’ve been alone and it’s hard to summon the strength that used to come so easy.
“You first,” the darker-haired man says, narrowing his gaze.
The fairer man glances warily before slowly lowering his. Good. At least one of them is smart.
“Not going to happen. On the ground. Kick it away.” You shift on your feet, gripping your gun tightly and readying your finger on the trigger. You don’t enjoy killing people, but you will if you have to. If it means getting back to Joel and Ellie.
“James,” the unarmed man says, calm authority firm in his voice. The one in charge, then. “Do as she says.” He holds up his hands in surrender as his friend, James, finally puts his gun away. “We mean no trouble. We’d just like to talk.”
“So talk,” you bite out, making no move to lower your own gun.
“Alright.” His breath is visible in the cool air, nose pink and runny. “My name is David. This is James. We’re from a town just south of here.”
“Good for you. Maybe you should go back now.”
An amused smirk twitches at his mouth. “Thing is, we have a lot of mouths to feed down there, and this deer… it would keep us going for a week. Maybe two.”
“Shame it isn’t yours,” you say.
A short sigh escapes him. “Right. It is a shame. But if I could offer you warm shelter and good food, a welcoming community, why couldn’t we share?”
You raise your eyebrows. “I’m not interested in negotiating.”
“With all due respect, ma’am… as far as I can tell, you’re all alone in these woods. There’s no reason why you have to be.”
It’s clear the other man, James, isn’t in on David’s kind offer. His mouth is pursed in a thin line, jaw grinding as though he’s holding back from saying something. Welcoming community, my ass.
Still, an idea strikes. You need something else more than you need the deer, and if this town has supplies… “You have medicine in this town of yours?”
David hesitates before dipping his head. “We do.”
“Antibiotics?”
“Yes…”
Hope swells in you for the first time since Joel was injured.
“If you put the gun down, we’d be much more open to discussing what it is you need,” he continues. “Please?”
Gulping, you slowly lower your gun — but you keep it in your hand just in case, stomach still filled with unease. Not every settlement will be like Jackson, and there’s something… off about these two.
“If you get me that medicine, you can have the deer.”
“We can do you one better. We have a nurse down in the village who can help you with your injury. If you just come with us…”
“No,” you say. “You’ll bring the medicine here, to me.”
Another strange smile. “You’ll be much more likely to survive the winter if you let us help you.”
Impatient, you raise your gun again. “Bring it or stop wasting my damn time.”
David lifts his hands again. “Okay. Alright. James, go and fetch what the lady needs.”
“David—” James begins to protest, but is quickly cut off.
“Go on now.”
Reluctantly, he does, and then it’s just the two of you.
“I know a place you can get warm,” he offers. “It’s just through the trees. An old greenhouse. No need to wait out here in the cold.”
It makes your gut twist, how he seems to be determined to get you moving, to take you out of these woods. And there’s a glint in his eye, something untrustworthy there — even his right-hand man seemed to see it. Nobody follows orders like that with pure reasons. He’s… scared, or at least threatened.
“I’m fine just here.”
“Okay. What’s your name?”
“I’m the one holding a gun, which means I’ll be the one asking questions. How many people are there in this town of yours?”
“Forty. Like I said, there’s room for one more. Perhaps it was God’s will, us meeting today.”
Oh, good, you think. He’s a God botherer. You didn’t particularly subscribe to religion before the world turned to shit, and you sure as hell have better things to do than pray now.
“Unless you’re not alone.” His voice seems to lower as though he knows something, and you stiffen instinctively. “Is the injury yours?”
“It’s none of your business.”
He no longer seems to be staring down the barrel of your gun, but right into you. “Because a few of our men had some trouble a few days ago. A man, a woman, and a young girl. Man was thought to be badly injured, you see. If he lived… well, I’d imagine that kinda wound would be susceptible to a nasty infection.”
He knows. He always knew. The raiders you crossed paths with, the ones who hurt Joel…
You no longer feel like the one holding the gun. You feel like the deer bleeding on the snow between you. Prey. Still, you set your chin. “I don’t know what you mean. I travel alone.”
“See, I believe you, but the thing is… my friend, James… he’s not so certain. I’d imagine that once he comes back with that medicine, he’ll be rounding up a few men to go hunting for these people. If what you’re saying is true, I wouldn’t want you to be caught in the middle of that. That’s why it’s much safer you just come with me now, see?”
Your upper lip curls into a warning snarl, finger twitching on the gun’s trigger. But if you kill him, you won’t get Joel’s medicine. You’ll lose him. “I’m sure I’ll be fine.”
“Hmm.” He debates this. “There’s a third option.”
“Not interested.”
“I think you are,” he pushes. “I think you’re one of them, and I think you’re trying to help your man. Very noble, but strange. You don’t seem a good match. You’re so… young, so calm, and from what I hear, he’s dangerous. Ruthless, even. A cold-blooded killer. Maybe if you come into town with me now, we can arrange for that medicine to be delivered without my brigade charging in and doing some damage. There’s a place for you. Your daughter, too. You don’t need to be tied to him anymore.”
You want to scoff, or else laugh in his face. Does he believe you’re that simple, that stupid? Does he believe you’re a fucking damsel in need of saving?
Anger simmers in you at the thought. “I think it’s about time you shut up.” You point the barrel at his head now, right between his brows.
He doesn’t balk, doesn’t tremble, doesn’t so much as blink, and you’re beginning to understand. He’s the type of man who uses religion to veil whatever monster lies beneath. He isn’t some small-town do-gooder, though he might believe it.
You dread to think what he might be capable of.
“I think it’s about time you drop your weapon.” The voice doesn’t belong to David. It comes from behind along with the feeling of cold metal against the back of your skull. You risk a glance over your shoulder to see the man from before, James. You should have heard him creep up, should have seen, but you were so focused on the one in front of you.
Your heart thunders as you realise you might not get out of it this time.
“We only want you to come with us,” David says, eyes round with feigned innocence. “That’s all. We don’t want to hurt you.”
“The gun to my head says otherwise. What would God say about this?” you retort, dripping venom because it’s all you have left.
A strange sadness crosses David’s face. “It didn’t have to be this way.”
Before you can pull the trigger, something heavy slams into your skull, and then darkness swallows you whole.
***
You wake in a cage, the taste of blood on your tongue and your wrists bound by rope. David is on the other side of the bars in what looks to be a kitchen, utensils hanging on the wall. Great butchers’ knives and cleavers wink at you in the watery daylight. You go cold with fear, crawling to the furthest corner of the cage.
“Let me go,” you say. “Let me go!”
“I’m sorry. It’s for your own good,” he says. “You were corrupted, but I can help you see the light again.”
“Why are you doing this?” You’re choking on a sob, thoughts of Joel and Ellie running through your mind. What if they found them? Joel is in and out of consciousness and Ellie can’t fight on her own.
David curls his fingers around the bars. “It’s God’s will. I was meant to meet you today. This is where you’re supposed to be.”
“In a fucking cage?” you spit, voice echoing around the kitchen. You pull at the rope until your skin splits, crying out when you realise this is it. There’s no way out. You’re trapped, and you have no idea what this man truly wants with you.
“This is merely a precaution,” he says. “I was wrong about you before. You are dangerous too. You have a dark heart, just like me. If you would just surrender, you could be part of this community.”
You squeeze your eyes closed, clamping down on a plea. You doubt it will do any good. Still, tears roll down your cheeks. “Fuck you,” you whisper.
“You don’t understand yet. You will.” David takes a step back, and somehow the prospect of him leaving you here causes your stomach to turn to water.
“Don’t do this,” you say. But he walks away with a glint in his eye that promises he will be back, and you’re left alone.
Dizziness rattles through you as you pull yourself onto your feet, testing the sturdiness of the bars in hopes you’ll find a weak spot. But it’s padlocked closed and the screws are in tightly —
Something catches your eye, pale and fleshy on the kitchen tiles.
An ear.
In the kitchen.
You vomit without warning as it all comes together. You wonder if the community even knows that their leader feeds them people. Wonder who was last in this cage and how long it took for them to become a meal.
You scramble against the ropes again and pray — not to whatever fucked up God David worships, but someone — that you find a way out.
***
“Joel!” Ellie shakes him frantically and finally he comes to. Sweat glistens on his forehead, his face drawn and pale, but he finally ate something earlier and she’s been keeping him hydrated as he drifts in and out of sleep.
Now, he frowns and hums in question.
“Y/N isn’t back. She didn’t come back, and now people are here.”
The sound of shuffling outside is only growing louder, and she keeps her voice to a whisper as fear grips her. It’s not like you to go more than two hours without checking in, even if you haven’t caught anything for dinner yet. That four hours have passed means something is wrong, and Ellie doesn’t know what to do, how to find you. She needs Joel. She needs you.
“What?” Joel struggles to sit up, the mattress groaning under his weight as he clutches his injured stomach. But he’s alert, awake, and that’s better than he’s been in days.
“She isn’t back,” Ellie says again, voice trembling now. “Someone’s here, Joel. They know about us.”
Understanding clears through the fog in his eyes slowly, and he looks up as he hears the floorboards creak above. “Shit,” he curses, dragging himself slowly to his knees. Ellie watches, pulling out her own gun. “Hide somewhere. Let me deal with it.”
He’s in no fit state to deal with anything, but when Ellie protests, he shushes her and orders her to do as he says, so she does. And as he readies himself for a fight he can’t win, panic rushes through him. You’re not back. Somebody is here.
He’s failed again, or at least is about to, and this time it’s you he’s afraid to lose.
He summons that anger when the silhouette slowly stalks down the stairs. Summons it a lot more when he’s throwing an arm around the idiot’s neck to squeeze the life out of him.
***
Joel has forgotten his injury. He’s forgotten anything but you; the thought of you alone, in danger, afraid. His fingers curl into fists at his side, and when the attacker finally rouses, he orders Ellie to leave the room. He doesn’t want her to see what comes next; who he becomes when he’s trying to protect the people he loves.
Nausea twists through him, but it mingles with anticipation. Some sick excitement. He’s good at being violent. Better at being vengeful.
“Where is she?” he asks, voice just steady enough to be assertive.
The attacker mumbles something, and Joel’s patience quickly dwindles.
“Who are you?” he asks, louder now.
The attacker shakes his head. Doesn’t want to play.
Joel brandishes his knife.
The attacker’s eyes widen in fear as he presses the point into his finger, ignoring the throbbing in his stomach. “You want to do this the hard way?”
“I'm not telling you anything.”
Joel tilts his head and clenches his jaw. Then in one swift motion, he’s gripping the arms of the chair the attacker is tied to, quivering with anger as he towers over him. “Last chance.”
The attacker purses his lips, and Joel steps back, watching him sink in relief — relishing in that false sense of security. Then he throws the first punch, the impact of fist to jaw singing through his bones. He shakes out his hand, punches again. Blood splatters, but he goes again twice more just for good measure, growing weaker with every blow. He stops when he realises that, knowing he needs to conserve his energy to get to you.
“Where the fuck is she?” he bellows.
“I don’t know who you’re talking about!”
He plunges the knife into the attackers knee, the sound of bone crunching and flesh squelching as blood dribbles down his jeans and the attacker cries out. That’s when he begins to beg. That’s when Joel knows he’ll tell him anything.
“Alright!” he’s whimpering. “Alright, please!”
“Tell me where she is or I swear to god, I’ll pop you’re fucking kneecap off.” Joel drives the blade deeper, thirsty now. Desperate. He can’t do this without you. He needs you safe. If he finds out you’re hurt…
“With David!” he blubbers. “She’s with David in town!”
“What tooooown?” (oh, you thought I wouldn’t?)
“Silver Lake!”
“Who the fuck is David and what does he want with her?”
“He…” the man chokes on his own sobs again, and Joel tugs on the knife, earning a piercing scream. “I don’t know what he wants, okay? He’s the leader! He… he took to her, I don’t know!”
A chill crawls down Joel’s spine and his vision blurs as he pauses. His blood-drenched fingers tremble, and he doesn’t know how to make them stop. “What do you mean, he took to her?”
The man spits out blood. “He likes her. Wants her to join him. I don’t know, man. I don’t know. I told you everything.”
Joel wants to tear him apart then and there, but he pulls out his map, yanking the knife from the man’s knee to put the hilt in his mouth. The attacker howls, tears streaking down his cheeks. Joel wants to tell him he’ll do a lot fucking worse if he finds you harmed. He wants to say a lot of things, but cotton fills his mouth and he needs to find you. He needs to stop wasting time. “Point it out to me.”
“It’s not a real town. It’s just a fucking community. I don’t know.”
Joel grips the man’s collar, and his voice falls deathly low. “Point it out to me or I’ll make sure your other knee matches.”
It’s enough motivation for the attacker to pinpoint a spot. His blood stains the map, highlighting a small valley between the forest and mountains.
Joel puts the map in his back pocket and slits the man’s throat before he can beg for his life. He’s not feeling merciful today.
***
David comes back for you an hour later. “Have you reconsidered?”
You only glare at him, your wrists bloody and your eyes gritty from so many shed tears. To your surprise, he unlocks the cage. Despite your better instinct, you stay seated, stay calm. You won’t get out of this if you try to run now. He has the upper hand, and you’ll let him have it, hoping his arrogance, his underestimation of you, will be his downfall.
“You must be hungry,” he says. “Come. Let me show you what I can offer.”
Shakily, you rise from the ground. “Will you at least untie me?”
“I’ll think about it.”
He leads you out of your kitchen. When he’s not looking, you lean your back to the table and snatch an abandoned knife, slipping it up your sleeve.
The front of the building is laid out like an old, cheap restaurant and bar, candles burning and booths lining the windows.
“I’m glad you’ve calmed down,” he says. “Now we’ll get a chance to know each other properly.”
Slowly, you begin to saw at the rope with the knife as he leads you to a booth. Two plates are set at the table, a candle lit in the middle, and you think about the ear on the floor. Wonder if the meat in the stew is not animal, not your deer. You want to throw up again, but you swallow down the bile in favour of relief: the rope has snapped. You keep your hands behind your back as you shuffle in your seat, trying to avoid looking at the meal. The smell of it makes your stomach turn.
“What do you want from me?” you ask finally.
David places a napkin on his lap. “I’m showing you hospitality. Hospitality you haven’t earned, might I add. Where is your gratitude?”
“Where the fuck is my medicine?”
Without warning, he stands and slaps you, and you can’t control your anger as the sting prickles along your cheekbone. You throw your plate at him, the food splattering his face and staining his shirt, and then you run.
A mistake. He hauls you back quickly, and the two of you topple to the floor as he slams your wrist down, forcing the knife away. He pins your hands and then straddles you, and you know what comes next. You know, and you shouldn’t, and this isn’t happening.
“You need to be taught some manners,” he croons, taking your chin in his hands. “A girl like you… you need to learn how to submit. Especially when we’re married. But don’t worry.” He leans down as you squirm, whispering into your ear, “We have time for that.”
“No!” You shout, slapping him away and doing your best to wriggle away. But he’s heavy on top of you, and he’s reaching for his belt, and there’s no way out. No hope. Nothing. “Get the fuck off me, you sick bastard!”
He slaps you again, lash twice as hard this time, and you taste blood.
You refuse to let it end like this. You refuse to let him destroy you. You let your body go slack as he unbuckles his belt, reaching out a hand and scrambling for the knife again. It’s under a chair not far from you — you just have to wriggle a little further.
“It’s sad that you can’t accept that this is how it’s supposed to be. This is God’s will. You and me… we’re the same, underneath. We have the same violent heart,” David is muttering, and there, your fingertips brush the hilt. Determination renewed, you extend yourself again and this time the knife falls into your hand.
You don’t have time to think; he’s unbuttoning his jeans, and like hell are you going to spend another moment beneath him. You drive the knife straight into his neck, and his eyes bulge as he gurgles on his own blood. As he goes limp, you push him off you — and stab again, again, again, spitting every bit of revenge into your movements as his blood covers his skin and your clothes.
“You twisted fucker!” you’re yelling, tears rolling down your face as the shock draws in, the disgust. He’d been so close to taking you. So close to making you a victim after so long spent fighting to be a survivor. “Go to fucking hell!”
You only stop when the fear numbs and you realise he’s no longer moving. Blood soaks both his shirt and yours, and you push yourself off him. His dead, milky eyes stare at you. When you catch a candle guttering in your periphery, you grab it. Crouch with it in your hand. Light him on fire. The flames spread along his clothes, and that’s how you leave him.
Ashes. Bloodied, dead ashes.
***
Joel and Ellie have fought their way through a blizzard. He’s surprised he’s still upright, but he saw bodies hanging in the stable and he can’t collapse now. Not for Ellie, and not for you. This community is built on something worse than infected or fascism, and when he found your jacket, your backpack, in that same room as the corpses…
He can’t see anything but red and white.
Ellie stops behind him suddenly. “Did you hear that?”
“What?” He catches his breath, looking around. There’s a long building close by, but he hasn’t seen any movement yet.
A scream rents through the air, and he knows it’s you. His heart picks up, stomach plummeting as he runs around to find the entrance. And there you are, collapsing out of the doorway.
He says your name as he catches your wrist, and you instantly cower away, screaming. “Please, no! Please, don’t!”
He’s never heard you beg for anything before, and his world tilts on its axis. What the fuck have they done to you?
“Baby, it’s me!” He draws you close, cupping your jaw with his palms. Your eyes are haunted, face pale, and there’s blood. So much blood. You’re still fighting him, pushing on his chest, and he stumbles back. “It’s me. Look at me. It’s me, darlin’. It’s Joel!”
Your breaths are ragged as realisation finally dawns across your features. “Joel,” you whisper.
“It’s me,” he says again, eyes filling with tears.
Your gaze moves to Ellie, and only then do you crumple. He catches you just before you fall to your knees, straining against his injury. “Oh, baby. Oh, baby girl,” he murmurs into your hair. “I’m here now. I’m here now. You’re okay.”
Sobs wrack through you and he wraps his arms around you, holding on so tight he worries he might hurt you. But you clutch his shoulders just as hard, fingernails digging through his coat. You shake beneath him, and his own tears drip onto his cheeks. He pulls away quickly to look you up and down. Blood streaks through your hair.
“Where are you hurt, baby? Tell me where it hurts.”
You shake your head. “I… I don’t know. I don’t know, Joel. I don’t…”
It’s like you’re not even here with him, and he wants to break. But he has to stay upright for you. He has to be strong for you. He shrugs his coat off quickly and puts it around you, catching sight of your reddened wrists as you adjust the collar. Those bastards tied you up. Hatred drowns him, and he looks at the building you emerged from only to find orange flames flickering in the window. It must have been you, he knows, and he can at least feel proud of you for that, but still, the thought of what they might have done...
“Alright. Come on. Let’s get out of here.” He pulls you to his chest, offering his other hand out for Elllie. She takes it, looking shaky as she carries both her bag and yours.
“They were… They were eating people, Joel,” you say, voice thick and unrecognisable. “I just wanted to get medicine, and they took me. They took me. They were eating people and he was going to… He wanted…”
“I know,” he murmurs, holding you tighter. “I know.”
You stop without warning. “They said they had medicine. You… We have to go back.”
“No, no, hey.” He laces his fingers through yours. “We ain’t going back there for anything.”
“The infection—” you protest.
“Look at me. I’m here. I’m okay. I just needed to rest is all. We don’t need any medicine now. We just need to get you somewhere safe.” His heart pangs. The fact you’ve been through hell and are still willing to go back to help him… sometimes he wishes you weren’t so damn selfless. He should have been the one protecting you today. It’s his fault you’re here. His fault you’re hurt.
You scrape your hair back and then, looking at your shaky fingers, seem to finally see all the blood. “His blood is in my hair.”
He can at least be relieved it isn’t your own, but the look on your face… he’s never seen so many scars written in one expression.
“I need to get it out. I need…”
“We’re gonna. We’re gonna help you clean up soon, okay?” He tucks your hair away, lost, because he doesn’t know how to do anything else. Doesn’t know how to make it all go away. “I’m so sorry, baby.” His voice cracks.
Your chest heaves with a stifled sob as you rub your hands and look out towards the lake. “Oh, god.”
Joel closes his eyes, wrought with regret. At his side, Ellie turns her gaze to the floor. It’s his worst fear come true. The reason he’d tried to get Tommy on board with taking Ellie the rest of the way.
He’d failed again. Was always failing.
All he can do is hold you close as you fall apart.

Taking it Slow
Tumblr media
Summary: An unexpected explosion severely injures you, and Jim Street, your LAPD SWAT roommate, comes to your rescue. The life and death situation makes you reevaluate the status of your “just casually dating” relationship.
Pairing: Jim Street x (Female) Reader
Disclaimer: Cannon violence and danger. Mentions of fire, explosions, and bombs. Location is an elementary school, mentions of danger to minors, but reader is the only one injured. Gruesome descriptions of bodily injury and blood. Some angst and mentions of divorce. BUT ALSO consensual kissing and touching. The smut in this is absolutely filthy as usual. Oral sex (female receiving). Consensual P in V sex. Street has a big cock. 18+ for explicit smut, violence, and language
Word Count: 4.5k
A/N: I finally got around to watching more SWAT after taking a break from crime dramas and I gotta say, Season 4 has been SO good. The commentary on our Covid and post-Covid society especially with race and Black Lives Matter is so thoughtfully done. I was re-inspired to make a part 2 of my Jim Street fic from back in July 2022! This fic can be standalone but it is technically a continuation from “Too Complicated.” Enjoy!
Part One Here - “Too Complicated”
Part Three Here - “I’ll Be Here”
Masterlist Here
“All Units please respond, bomb at Harriet Tubman Elementary, repeat bomb and fire at Tubman Elementary.”
The police scanner radio squawks to life in the leather-scented interior of Sergeant Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson’s sliver Dodge Charger.
Hondo locks eyes with Jim Street, LAPD SWAT. His expression falls immediately, drawn and serious.
A school bombing?
Not on their watch.
”20 David, Sergeant Harrelson responding. Let’s roll!”
Your pink highlighter squeaks across the tiny Times New Roman text of each signature line on the paperwork you’re preparing.
A tightness in your neck forces you to pause and lean your head to the side, trying to release the tension in your body.
It’s another tough case. The student was expelled out of a previous school due to repeated fighting. His current teacher is young and inexperienced, and the counselor is definitely overwhelmed. You were called in to take over his case and then recommend him to a therapist, a behaviorist, a specialist, someone before he was expelled again.
Who knew that an 8 year old could wreak so much havoc at a school?
You glance out the window of the 2nd floor classroom, watching the poor kid get into a screaming match with a yard duty. The bright red digital display of the classroom clock shows 9:00 am in blinking lights that seem to say…
tick
tock
It’s
only
9
freakin
AM
on a Monday.
But, no one could have predicted what would happen in the next ten seconds.
One
A thunderous boom echoes across the playground, so loud that all the kids freeze, balls dropped and forgotten.
Two
Thousands of shards of shattered glass fly through the air as the school building collapses into itself from the roof downwards.
Three
The ear-splitting screech of the fire alarm forces everyone to cover their ears, eyes squeezed shut.
Four
Smoke rises in thick gray plumes into the sky, followed by bright orange flames.
Five
The stampede of three hundred little feet shakes the earth as panicked children run towards the grass field, away from their burning school.
Six
Bewildered shouts across the blacktop try to account for all the children, staff members still running out of the smoke.
Seven
Wide-eyed stares fill with tears as it dawns on the kids what had happened.
Eight
A dozen simultaneous calls to 911, all trying to be heard over the crying, screams, and shouts.
Nine
A terrifying pop pop pop makes everyone flinch and duck for cover, as the heat from the fire breaks even more windows. But it could have been gunshots. Everyone doesn’t dare to move.
Ten
After those ten, chaotic seconds, you finally open your dust-filled eyes, ears ringing, sounds muffled as if you were underwater, and your dazed mind takes several agonizing seconds to comprehend the scene around you.
Fallen desks and books scattered haphazardly across the classroom.
Shattered glass reflecting the flickering flames of a fire somewhere above you.
Looking up, a gaping hole in the ceiling leading to a smoke-stained blue sky.
The incessant blaring of the fire alarm doesn’t help your clearly concussed head make sense of it all.
You deduce that there had been some kind of accident. An explosion maybe.
And that caused an industrial AC unit to collapse through the ceiling, knock you out of your chair, and pin one of your legs from the waist down.
And now, an alarming pool of blood was starting to seep from under the crumpled gray metal.
Even more alarming, you couldn’t feel a thing underneath the crushing weight.
“Oh. I’m dying.” You huff out loud, your logical deduction giving way into dark humor.
You twist your neck around, the soreness long forgotten, and try to find something, anything, to help yourself survive.
You grab your cardigan, covered in drywall dust, and slip it under your upper thigh, tying the sleeves together as tight as it could possibly go. The makeshift tourniquet immediately soaks up your blood, turning the cream-colored yarn into a horrific deep red.
Bile rises in your throat as panic sets in, but you push it down, desperate to get out of this.
You look down, realizing that your phone fell out of the pocket of your jacket when you grabbed it. The screen is cracked, but usable.
Without hesitating, you press a number on your phone and it starts to ring. There’s only one person in the world you want to talk to before you lose consciousness. Maybe forever.
“Street! What do you think you’re doing?”
“What? You’ve never played in one of these as a kid?”
You’re out on another casual date with Jim Street, LAPD SWAT. Also known as your impulsive, annoying, immature, and absolutely adorable roommate.
That you had accidentally-on-purpose kissed one drunken night. Which led to much more…for several hours.
And now, the two of you went out most every weekend, casually dating, but not trying to label it…yet.
“Come on, Y/N! It’ll be fun!”
Street ducks into an arcade, which immediately deafens you with a cacophony of beeps and honks, electronic character voices, and techno dance music. It’s an overstimulating nightmare so you focus on the leather-clad back of Street, who is leading you deeper into the room.
A couple of surly teens throw judgemental side eyes at the two of you, grown-ass adults screaming and shouting at basketball, skew-ball, and claw machines.
You clutch a small blue plushie, from Lilo and Stitch, courtesy of Street’s claw machine skills, as he whoops upon seeing another game, his childhood favorite.
“Yes! We have to play this next!” Street grins at you from ear to ear.
You hesitate for a split second, but shake your head, chuckling, “Okay NASCAR, wait for me!”
You tease him, knowing that Street’s name is all too fitting, his long history of all things on wheels that can go faster than 100 miles per hour is well known.
You sit behind the plastic wheel of the racing game as Street quickly punches in a couple quarters.
“Think you can keep up?” Street teases you immediately.
“Mhm.” You reply, your face dead serious, all traces of amusement long gone.
Street takes in your expression and furrows his brow.
“Oh shit!” He exclaims as you leave him in the dust, your digital car screeching as the wheels fight against the tight turns.
You’re silent, the only sounds are the quiet clicking of your foot pressing on the fake gas pedals of the game.
Your car peels around the track, going into the final lap, with a 3 second lead on Street.
“Oh my god, are you seriously drifting?” Street shouts in frustration, watching your vehicle slide sideways against the last tight turn and across the finish line with a flourish.
He smacks the wheel and laughs.
“That was crazy, Y/N. I didn’t expect you to be so good! I thought you said you didn’t really go to arcades growing up.”
“Can we go home?” You grab your jacket from the armrest of the racing game chair, turning away from Street.
“Uhh…yeah sure.” Street says slowly, confused.
You walk quickly out of the arcade, a mix of frustration, shame, and sadness filling you.
Hands clench into fists at your sides as you suck in a shaky breath, trying to steady your whirlwind of emotion.
Street half-jogs to catch up with you, calling your name. He reaches out a hand to grab your wrist, but the instant he makes contact you snatch your arm back abruptly.
“Don’t touch me!” You snap, more harshly than you intended.
Street’s face flashes confusion, hurt, and a bit of anger all at once. You see him stifle the urge to snap back at you, and instead, he shoves his hands into his pockets, his shoulders slumped down and he quietly pleads with you instead.
“Talk to me, Y/N. Don’t keep it in again.”
You know you’re acting like an asshole and ruining the date. Street surprised you with being the mature one in this situation while you’re the one taking out your emotions on him.
So you slowly reach out to take one of his hands in both of yours. It’s warm, heavy, and sure in your grasp, a reassuring anchor. You clutch his hand close to your chest and duck your head down, unable to make eye contact.
“I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be. Just tell me what’s going on. Please?”
“It’s just—I’m not used to opening up like this.”
“I know. We’re learning how to, with each other.” Street slips his free hand under your chin, lifting your head up to kiss you affectionately on the cheek.
“Take your time.”
You sigh into his touch, releasing some of the tightness in your chest.
“Can we get ice cream first?”
Over a double scoop of cookies and cream, you confide in Street more of your life story.
How there was a period of time in middle school where you used to spend hours at the arcade after school to avoid going home.
Your parents were fighting constantly and you just couldn’t take all the screaming. Your older sister was in high school and worked part time, so she would drop you off with a handful of quarters and get you after.
For some reason, that racing game became your focus, your obsession. You channeled all your frustration, all your hurt, all your pain into that game.
It was your escape.
“It feels silly to freak out now. It’s been well over a decade since I’ve played that game.” You mumble into your ice cream.
“It’s not silly,” Street reassures you, “It’s a painful part of your life.”
You scrunch up your nose and murmur in agreement, not really wanting to think about it anymore. You take another lick of your ice cream, accidentally getting some on your cheek.
Street reaches out with a finger to wipe the smudge of the sticky treat off your face and instead of cleaning his hands on a napkin, he decides to lick it off instead.
You raise your eyebrows in surprise, the gesture unexpectedly sexy, but Street just chuckles.
“What? You taste good.”
You clutch Street by the collar of his leather jacket, slamming his broad back against the apartment door.
He drops the keys with a clatter, slides a free hand up to lock the door before gripping the back of your neck roughly, returning your desperate kiss.
“Y/N. Are you sure?” He releases your lips with a pant, pressing his forehead to yours and checking in with you.
Consent is so sexy, especially coming from him. Your previous boyfriends always took what they wanted, when they wanted, and you thought that’s how sex had to be.
It was only after being with Street that you realized how gentle, how considerate, and how trustworthy someone could be during sex.
Street treated you with respect, with reverence. He took his time to worship your body.
You were his queen, his goddess, and even if he didn’t say as much in words, he sure as hell showed it with his actions.
So yes.
You were fucking sure you wanted him.
You pulled off your clothes as you walked ahead of him towards your room, dropping fabric across the hallway on your way there.
Street followed quickly, stopping at the foot of your bed with his jeans still on. His chest visibly flushed red as he stared in wonder at your naked form. And he half-laughed, half-groaned out loud.
How did you manage to get your clothes off so quickly and look so damn delicious on the bed for him?
He grabs both of your ankles and drags you down, lifting them up above his shoulders so he can taste you.
You lean back on both elbows, your hair splayed across the sheets as you tip your head back in delight.
“Oh shit, that feels so good.” You breathe out, a moan slipping through your lips.
“Mmm, I can tell.” Street smiles into your pussy as he licks long strips up your core. He finds your clit within a few moments, and starts alternating sucking and licking the sensitive nub.
Your thighs start shaking as the stimulation shoots down your legs.
Street’s chin grows slick as your arousal throbs out of your core, but he simply holds down your thighs with his strong grip, and dives his tongue into your center even more.
It’s only when you spasm particularly hard, almost kicking him in the head that he finally releases you, chuckling as he swipes a thumb across his lips, wiping off some of your juices.
Your body is still twitching, your nerve endings shooting electricity from your core all the way down to your toes and you throw an arm back across your forehead, trying to recover.
“Come on, you can’t be done yet…” Street teases.
“Absolutely not.” You laugh out in a huff, “j-just…give me a minute.”
“Nah.”
Street lifts your legs again, this time crossing them behind his hips, so that he can line himself up to your entrance.
He pushes in slowly, but just the round head of his cock stretches your pussy to the point that you have to grab his arms and stop him.
“Hold on, Jim.”
Street freezes. You only call him by his first name when you’re being serious or something’s wrong.
He pulls out immediately and lifts you up into a sitting position. He immediately grabs your face in his hands, searching your eyes for pain.
“I’m so sorry, did I hurt you? We can stop— I didn’t mean to—“
You grip his wrists and gently remove them from your cheeks. Instead, you press a gentle kiss to his lips, your gaze at him soft and reassuring.
“I’m okay. Let’s try a different position.”
“Are you sure?”
You turn around, holding up your weight on your hands and knees, and spreading your hips back. You flip your hair over your shoulder and glance back at him with a smirk.
“You haven’t made me cum yet, have you?”
Slowly, Street’s concerned look spreads into a smile.
“No, I haven’t.”
“So fuck me.”
Street holds his cock steady while you carefully push back against him, controlling the pace.
When you’ve fully taken him in, now adjusted to his size, Street still hesitates.
“It’s okay. I’m ready now.” You brace yourself.
“Be as rough as you want.”
A sound akin to a growl escapes from the man who is balls deep in your pussy.
He places a bruising grip on your right shoulder and left hip, and slams you back, knocking the wind out of your lungs.
He does that again and again - pulling out almost all the way before slamming your body back against him almost violently.
“Oh fuck!” You yelp each time, your pussy throbbing around him.
Street then pushes your neck down, and you fist the sheets in your hands as you press into the bed, your ass in the air as he thrusts into you relentlessly.
You can hear your bottom smacking against his strong abs, as he swings his hips into you over and over.
And that cock, his huge, delicious cock, spears your pussy in just the right place every time.
“Oh my god, Street. That feels so good!” Your muffled voice can barely be heard over his grunting. God, you love it when men are loud during sex.
Before you know it, you’re close. Street must be too because he snakes a firm arm around your tummy and lifts you up, holding you tightly to his chest. Your core is still clenched in a vice grip around his member as he thrusts upward into your pussy.
“Street! Oh wow! You’re so big!” You praise him, feeling his cock hitting your cervix from his position.
“Yeah? You like it when my cock hits your pussy. Just. like. that?” Street punctuates his question with a hard bounce into you.
“Mmph!” You moan, and you grab his arm, still trapping you against his sweat-slicked body.
“Street,” you pant.
“Yeah?”
“Go faster.”
With a guttural groan, Street grabs the flesh around your hips and drills up into you. His cock drives in and out at a speed that could only be described as mechanical, a piston that pumps as deep as it could possibly go before pulling out and slamming back in as far as it can go.
You fall onto the bed again, unable to do anything but hold on far dear life as Street rails you like a rag doll.
Within seconds, you feel that familiar tingle spread from your core to your entire body, washing over you in waves of pleasure.
“Oh god— I’m cumming!” You scream, gasping for air.
You are answered with a growl as Street collapses on top of you, cumming inside your throbbing core, your pussy milking every last drop from his twitching cock.
Fuck, that was incredible.
After a few moments, you crawl out from under him, and stand up to head to the shower. He leans up on an elbow, watching you with a blissed-out smile. You tie your hair up into a messy bun, the simple action somehow sensual as hell as he sees your bare shoulder blades squeeze together as you reach up to your head.
You turn, catching him admiring you.
“What?” You ask, totally unaware.
“You’re beautiful.”
Your already hot skin somehow flushes even hotter at his words. You have a love-hate relationship with Street’s compliments.
So you just lean down and peck his cheek with kiss-puffed lips.
“Go to bed. We both have work tomorrow.” You whisper before pushing him back onto the mattress, shaking your head in laughter.
Your current reality is a universe away from yesterday’s date night with Jim Street.
You stare at his name on the phone, willing him to pick up.
“Y/N?”
Before you can explain to him, you hear the police radio in his car announce your school site and the bombing.
“Jim. I’m there.”
Street is speechless, the dots connecting with several torturous seconds as his worst fears become true.
One
You had told him that morning that you weren’t going into the office, but visiting a school today.
Two
You never call him, preferring to text. If it’s a call, something must be urgent.
Three
You almost never call him by his first name.
Something was wrong. Very wrong.
Hondo responds to the radio but Street barely hears it as he shouts into the phone.
“What happened? Are you okay?”
“There’s been an explosion. A bomb? An AC unit fell through the roof. I’m trapped on the second floor.”
“Are you hurt?” Street repeats his question, desperation seeping into his tone.
Somehow you hesitate to tell him. So instead, you switch to video call and show him your leg.
Street’s eyes widen in horror as he sees the bloodied, crushed flesh.
Hondo glances at Street’s phone, his siren already screaming down the streets of LA.
“We’re coming.”
“You can’t keep me here, Hondo! Y/N is hurt, I have to get to her!”
“Street, you’re compromised. You’re gonna take risks and I can’t have you do that, not when there are kids here who need your head straight.”
Another sudden crash makes both men instinctually duck for cover. They had just arrived into a horror scene, with a blazing fire, fire trucks dousing the building with water, police holding back hysterical parents, ambulances treating kids and staff for smoke inhalation, and a soot-smeared principal talking to the fire marshal.
Hondo makes a beeline for her, Street on his heels.
“Sergeant Harrelson, LAPD SWAT. Is everyone accounted for?”
“Yes, all the kids and staff, but we’re missing one visitor, a social worker.”
Street chokes your name out, to which the principal nods, confirming that it’s you.
Meanwhile you breathe out a sigh of relief.
“Thank god everyone is safe.” You remark weakly, still on the phone, hearing their entire conversation.
Street is astonished you can think about others but his train of thought is interrupted when Chris in his comms crackles to life.
“There! I got eyes on the bomber! He’s on the roof, east side!”
“We have to go!” Street yells desperately.
“Okay.” Hondo huffs out, making a split second decision.
“Tan, go with Street and get Y/N out. Weapons hot, masks on, the bomber might run into the building. Deacon, you’re with me, let’s trap this rat.”
Street wastes no time running inside the smoke-filled building, his flashlight barely penetrating the ash and dust as he finds the stairs and runs up, Tan covering his back, sweeping his gun back and forth just in case the bomber decides to come their way.
“I’m coming, Y/N. Ten seconds out.” Street speaks into his comms, and his phone, for your benefit too.
But he doesn’t hear a reply.
“Shit!” Street curses. “She was losing a lot of blood, she’s not responding!”
Tan makes a game plan immediately as they keep running.
“I got the AC unit, you start CPR!” Tan shouts.
They skid to a stop at the destroyed classroom, and Street’s heart almost stops at the scene.
Your limp body, lying in a pool of dark blood, trapped under a giant hunk of metal, your phone still clutched in one hand.
Street kneels next to you, his own heartbeat reverberating loudly in his ears.
Thu-thump
He presses his fingers to your neck, feeling for a pulse while leaning down, trying to feel your breath on his face.
Thu-thump
Nothing. He immediately rips his smoke mask off his face and breathes into your mouth.
Once. Twice.
Thu-thump
He braces his hands against your chest and pushes down forcefully, starting CPR compressions.
Thu-thump
With a grating screech of metal, Tan manages to tip the AC unit off of you, revealing your upper thigh soaked in blood and your leg clearly broken in at least two parts.
Thu-thump
Street barely glances down to look, focusing on bringing you back to life. He feels for a pulse again, finally feeling a weak heartbeat, but a heartbeat nonetheless.
“She’s stable! Let’s get out of here!” Street shouts, throwing his smoke mask back on, and another for you.
Tan has already tied your leg down into two splints, one for your thigh, and another for your calf and ankle.
“Ready!” Tan replies in a voice muffled by his smoke mask, wiping his blood soaked hands on his tactical pants and gripping his gun again.
Street lifts you up, carefully draping your injured leg over his forearm, and cradling your concussed head gently against his shoulder.
He flies down the steps, Tan covering his back.
“This is 25-David, Y/N is secured, coming out of the school now.” Tan communicates to the team.
The moment they step out onto the front lawn of the school, their comms crackle again.
“Don’t do it man, don’t!” Hondo yells out. He must have found the bomber.
“Second bomb!” Chris warns, just as another explosion on the far side of the school collapses the roof completely, burying the spot where you were just trapped, and taking the bomber along with it.
“Hondo! Deacon! Chris!” Tan shouts into comms. The two of them shield you from the debris, holding their breath as they wait for a reply.
After a few moments, they hear Hondo coughing into the radio.
“20-David. We’re okay, we’re coming down.”
Street and Tan breathe a sigh of relief, as the EMTs run up to the three of you, carefully putting you on a stretcher.
Streets hurries alongside them, and jumps up into the back of the ambulance, glancing back at Tan.
“Go!” Tan shouts at him. “I got it covered.”
The last thing Street sees as the doors close is Tan standing with his back illuminated by a school on fire, his hands hanging at his sides, bright red with your blood.
Bzzt Bzzt Bzzt !
Vision blurry, it takes a few seconds for your eyes to focus and notice the late afternoon sun streaming through plastic blinds in a white-washed room.
A hospital room. That’s right, you were injured in an explosion at the elementary school, and your leg…
You looked down to see a full cast, from thigh to ankle, keeping your leg locked straight. A thin, polyester blanket covers the rest of your body.
Bzzt Bzzt Bzzt !
The insistent vibrating of a phone turns your attention to where a sleeping Jim Street, still in full SWAT gear, rests his head on his folded arms in the empty space on your bedside. One of his hands holds yours gently, even as he dozes.
You slip your hand out from his warm grip and brush his hair back, still flecked with a bit of ash and dust from the rescue mission.
Your gaze softens as you look at his peaceful face. You must have worried him so much with the accident.
Bzzt Bzzt Bzzt !
You see his phone lying on the table and you can just make out what it says.
5 missed calls from Hondo. 2 texts from Chris and Tan saying he missed the debriefing.
And currently, Commander Hicks is ringing, ready to ream his ass for being irresponsible, you’re sure of it.
“Street.” Your voice cracks. Clearing your throat, you try again, louder this time.
“Street!” You shake his shoulder insistently.
He shoots up, awake in an instant. “Y/N! You’re up!”
His eyes dart over your face, checking for any signs of pain.
“You’re in trouble.”
Street takes one look at his phone and mutters “Shit.” Without thinking, he presses a kiss to your clammy forehead and ducks out the door, phone pressed to his ear.
You bring a tentative hand up to your forehead, a lot dazed and a little shocked. The two of you haven’t really discussed the nature of your relationship after that weekend of crazy sex, trying to take it slow.
But it’s not every day that you get gruesomely injured and your hot as fuck roommate rescues you from near death.
As you hear Street’s muffled apologies outside of your hospital room, fuzzy memories start coming back to you.
White letters of a SWAT vest hovering over you as firm hands push down on your weakening heart.
Strong arms holding you up as you feel yourself being carried down a flight of stairs at a ridiculous speed.
The smell of smoke, and the unmistakable smell of Jim Street as he cradles your head into his chest, keeping you safe.
A warm hand never letting go of yours as sirens squeal in the ambulance, your consciousness fading in and out.
A reassuring voice, his voice, telling you that you’re alright, that you're safe.
“I got you, Y/N. I’m right here.”
Fuck taking it slow.
You’re not a girl who normally falls in love with a man in an uniform but damn. You sure as hell get it now.
The door opens with a quiet click and Jim Street steps back inside.
“Hey—“
“I love you.” It comes out a little louder than a whisper. ”I love you, Jim.”
Street's words die in his throat as his eyes widen. He crosses over to you in two strides and simply lifts up your chin so that he can press a kiss to your lips.
A desperate, urgent, love-filled kiss that says just how scared, just how terrified he was to lose you.
And just how much he loves you too.

He likely doesn’t even realise you’re awake. Not that you mind, after all, he’d just gotten out from the shower. His finely cut muscles, like the David statue, has water running down from the top of his broad shoulders all the way down to his v-line. That towel hangs incredibly low and every time he moves it threatens to fall.
He stands in front of the closet, trying to decide what to wear. “Are you enjoying the show?” His voice is rough, you can see his eyes slide over to you, and a huge blush coats your cheeks. On instinct you pull the covers up to hide your face. He tsks and walks over to you, and lightly pulls down the sheets. “Didn’t I tell you not to hide your face from me?”
You giggle, “You look quite handsome for an old man.” He groans and rolls his eyes. “¿Qué voy a hacer contigo?” You hum as a reply, “I like it when you talk Spanish to me.” You use his own words against him. He shakes his and grabs some clothes from the closet. “Go get ready, dormilona.”
You sigh and push the sheets to the side. “Why, anything particular planned for today?” You ask watching each reaction. “Oh yeah, you have big plans for today. Me? I have nothing but boring meetings and practising.” He shrugs, pulling the shirt over his head. “Poor thing, are you sure I can’t company you?” You ask, holding out your hand for him to take, still sitting like a princess on the bed.
He does just that, gently caressing your knuckles. “No, mi niña bonita. You’re in Italy, I want you to enjoy it. Plus, I have a surprise for you.” He winks, shooing you out the bed only for you to return soon after wearing a matching set. Light white linen, short button up top and short skirt with a comfortable pair of flats. Of course, with your new Prada bag close by.
“Wow, wow, wow, don’t you look beautiful?” He says, taking your hand and allowing you to spin, before he slowly places kisses all the way up your arm to your shoulder. Your hair is pulled up with the claw clip he got you, leaving clear space for his lips to find a home there. “Deberías ser adorado. Debería haber santuarios y estatuas en tu nombre. Me aseguraré de que seas un Sainz, para que los que me aman, te amen aún más.”
You furrow your brows, “You speak words that I cannot understand but your eyes say so much more than your mouth ever will.” It’s true, he looks to be madly in love, obsessed even. His eyes fall on your frame as if he is seeing a god for the first time. His eyes go from chocolate brown to that of a pitch-black night. Stars in his eyes.
“You will understand, soon enough,” he winks and then asks, “Do you have everything?” You smile and nod, opening your back only to see your phone and some lip-gloss. Your wallet is their too, but inside is only your ID, your driver's licence and a credit card you haven’t used in two weeks now.
“Good.” Then he takes your hand in his and to you, you’re only thinking you’re going for a walk, for breakfast. Yet, when you exit the hotel, you can see just what Carlos meant when he said the Ferrari fans go big. They’re surrounding the hotel, there were fans yesterday too, but you can only assume the closer it gets to the weekend the more there will be.
“Keep your head down.” He says, pulling out his sunglasses and in one smooth move puts them on. He seems like someone else entirely. His demeanour is different. His hand is wrapped around your waist, his grip firm and even tight. His jaw is locked tight, and his whole personality is so much suaver.
It does something to you, the way he takes control. Guides you through the crowd, still waving and giving attention to the fans but at the same time he is untouchable. And now, you are too. Cameras are flashing and people are screaming his name...and yours too. It sends a thrill down your spine and instead of keeping your head low like he said, you keep your head high.
Carlos guides you into the car, and still careful of the people, he drives off. You can feel your heartbeat in your ears. A bright smile is smeared on your face. “What are you smiling about, chica guapa?” He asks, his hands smooth on the gear box. The way he sits back on the chair is something you could watch forever and ever.
“That was so cool, you were so cool, I felt so cool. Appelez cela un rêve appelé vrai.” You sigh, stabilizing your beating heart by fixing your hair. “You enjoy that?” His dark brows knot and you nod with a bright smile. “Don’t you?” This is part of his job; doesn't he love his job?
He shakes his head, “I really do appreciate the fans but sometimes eh…” You can't help but let your mouth hang open in shock. He raises his brow at you. “Carlos. Those people out there make your career. You're the only way that they might ever get a taste of the life. They live through you. I find it thrilling,” you explain, and it does seem to have made an impact on him.
“Like, back home, idols are an escape from reality. Seeing these people on, living the life you can only dream of, makes you hopeful that maybe someday you could be them. It might never happen for some, but even then, it helps you get out of the bed in the morning.” Like always he’s hanging onto your every word.
He pulls up to a really fancy looking car shop. Luxury vehicles you can only ever dream of displayed in all sorts of ways. The people who work here greet you both with utmost respect, they too look for anything they can do for you. You can't help but look around, taking in the beauty of some of these cars. Hand crafted leather seats expertly painted and worked on for years.
“You like?” Carlos asks, his hand falling on the curve of your waist. You noticed it instantly, after last night his touches have become more frequent. Not that you mind, in fact each time he places a kiss on your shoulder, or grabs your hand, you can feel the lightning course through you. The power of a thousand horses making their way through your stomach.
“My dad would go crazy.” You mutter, thinking of all the times your father would call out the exact name and model of a car as you passed. “But do you like it?” Carlos' brows furrow, you can see he worries and can tell he was excited to show you. “Of course, it just feels so crazy. I never thought in a million years I could ever even be this close to the cars I see on my feed all the time.” You mutter, your hand on his chest as you take it all in.
He smirks, “Pick one.” His words are so simple and easy. You'd think he's asking you to say if you wanted chicken or beef. “Pick one?” The words fall from your mouth and feel like a thousand butterflies on your tongue. He nods, “Any one, I'll rent it for the day or even the whole week if you wanted.” He shrugs, also gazing at all the magnificent cars.
He lets go, allowing to roam and decide which one. Then you spot it, in the very back of the show room. You don't know the name, the model or anything important. You just know, this is the one. “Ahh, yes, the Ferrari R8 Spider.” The front man begins speaking, listing off all the special features but you're not listening. All you see are hearts and stars.
“This one?” You can call out his deep voice and accent out of a million voices. “Yes, I don't need to see any other one.” You beam up at him and you can see he too is excited about it. “Should've known you'd always find the Ferrari,” you nod, appreciating each and every grove of the car.
While the people set up all the paperwork, Carlos pulls you to the side. He pulls out his wallet and then hands you his Black Amex card. “What's this?” You ask him, holding the card gently as if you're cradling a baby. “You've never seen one before?” He asks, his brows pulled together but still teasing. “I want you to go to Milan and shop your heart out. No limit.” He sends you a wink and you feel your knees grow weak.
“You can't be serious.” The words are like lead on your tongue. What on earth is he doing? “Of course, why would I joke?” He's dead serious. Carlos is dead serious about this. “No limit?” You ask one more time just to make sure you didn't hear wrong. “There are two conditions.” You nod, not even caring if he says you have to go down on your knees.
“Otis and Brutis stay with you at all times.” He then points his thumb to the two massive bodyguards waiting just outside the shop. A whine escapes your mouth, and you push out your bottom lip more than ever before. “No, they're such a drag.” You whine, grabbing onto his polo shirt. “They will follow you, wherever you go.” His voice is stern but still you fight.
You know that it's for your safety, but you can't help but feel like a criminal. Someone who should be watched at all times, like you're being babysat. A thought plays in your mind, the perfect way to get him to change his mind. “Daddy, please don't make me take those oafs with.” You give him your best puppy eyes, the word now feeling much more comfortable on your tongue.
His reaction is priceless. You can see the internal struggle in his mind. His hand reaches up, gently caressing your lips, you can see he so wants you. “Fuck…” a glimmer of hope, his resolve seems to have cracked. That sure was easy. “No, absolutely none-negotiable. They stay with you at all times.” Perhaps you are a child, because right now you feel like throwing a tantrum.
“But you said-” he laughs, and interrupts you. “As much as that word coming from you, makes me want to fuck you right here on the display floor, it doesn't mean you automatically get what you want. Manners are good from a cosita dulce like you, but your safety always come first.” No wonder his eyes are stormy like that. You're certain that your panties are as wet as can be and that you're red like a tomato.
He can tell you're left speechless and continued with his conditions. “Be back before dinner, and I want a fashion show when I get home.” With that, he pulls you close, placing a kiss on your forehead and then proceeds to pay the deposit for the car rental. Leaving you a soaked mess, absolutely hungry for his bones. You will get him back for that.

Us Weekly:
“Carlos Sainz and his girlfriend and his girlfriend spotted outside the Hotel de la Villa.”
Glamour:
“Carlos Sainz’ girlfriend spotted driving a Ferrari in Milan.”
Mirror:
“Y/N Y/S/N spotted spending big in Milan.”
30 000 Dollars. The excitement to see her in that 30 000 made me rock hard all day. Some of them she posted on her story, which I keep track of religiously. But I know for a fact that that couldn’t be all of it. I saw the news articles; it gave me a great sense of pride seeing them finally call her by her name and not just as my girl.
I made sure to make is home as quick as possibly, though, I don’t find her in her room or even mine. That is until, I ask the guards.
The sight is truly delicious. It makes me disgusted by the pure amount of clothes I’m wearing, or the fact that these two idiots even dare look or be around her. Her arms are hanging lazily onto the side of the hot tub, her eyes staring out at the view of Italy. But the bikini she’s wearing should be illegal.
It’s bright red, with delicate knots holding the thing together. One small tug and it will fall right off. Her body is so soft, her curves fill the bikini perfectly. Her hair in one of the claw clips that I bought her, messy and lazily done. Some of her locks falling out of place, making her neck look so ready to be kissed. Her waist curves and I just want to rip the damn thing off.
“Leave,” my voice is stern and deeper than I thought it would be. She turns by the sound of my voice, and lightly treads her way to me. A huge looking cocktail in one hand, more than half empty. “Bonjour mon Carlito,” she winks at me, and I groan at her words. Where did she hear that, or is it the alcohol speaking?
I bend down next to the hot tub. “Hola, mi niña bonita.” Her cheeks go red, “How many of these have you had?” I ask, referring to the mixed cocktail. She shrugs, “This is the first, but the night is still young.” I tsk and shake my head. “You know the deal, niña pequeña,” she whines and pushes out her bottom lip.
I tsk and shake my head. “In any case, you have to show me what you got.” My finger gently caresses her cheek. After the night that she joined me in the bed, everything changes. Clearly, she is ready for more. Ready for the next step, even just a small one. More touches, more kisses on her cheek or her neck. Perhaps even a week or two from now, a kiss on the lips.
Again, she pouts. My fingers find that bottom lip of her, if I kiss her now, there will be no wait. “Daddy, please come join me.” How on earth could I ever say no to eyes like that. That beg and plead and want. Those eyes that I could never in a million years say no to. I gently place a kiss on her forehead. “I’ll go change.” A wide smile covers her lips and her eyes sparkle.
I’m quick, not even 5 minutes. The bubbles are a nice temperature, no hotter than the weather but no colder than 26 degrees Celsius. My hands instantly find her waist, she’s gazing at the view again. You can see the towns and people and far away mountains and farmlands. I don’t care about any of that.
All I can think about is the feeling of her waist under my hand. Her back against my chest, the rhythmic rise and fall of her breath. The sweet, sweet smell of her. Sickly sweet ripe berries, hot honey on the tongue and home. She’d be such a good mother, if she and I... then she’d never be able to leave me.
“What are you thinking about?” Her voice is like angels in my ears. I tuck a stray strand of her hair behind her ear, mostly just to feel her down-like skin. “You, I’m always thinking about you.” Her cheeks are pink but still a smirk is on her face. “You get this faraway look, somewhere special where I can’t possibly be.”
I can only shake my head at her conclusion. “No, mi amor, you are my special place.” She giggles, the sound of fairies being born. “I’ve seen the interviews, years before we met you still have the same other dimension look.” She looks to chuff with herself. “That’s because I’ve been dreaming of someone like you since forever.”
She laughs out loud, her head falling back and her drink almost tipping over. “You’re smooth, Mr Sainz.” Her words are music to my ears. The urge to kiss her is so strong. Instead, I make do with the sweet spot on her collarbone. “They do call me the smooth operator.” She rolls her eyes at me. “Full of yourself, aren’t you?”
“How can’t I be, with such a beautiful lady sharing a hot tub with me. In the tiniest bikini might I add.” She hums and then does a slight turn, the water gracefully spinning around her. “You like?” Do I like? “Fucking hell, chica bebé, I’m struggling to keep my hands off of you.” Then her eyes turn to that of a siren.
“Why do you keep your hands to yourself?” Her tone is begging, a slight whimper in her voice. She might have had only one drink, but her tolerance must be low. Then her hands begin to roam my body. Her touch is like fire, lighting on my body and my loins ablaze. A groan leaves my mouth, the self-control is unbearable when her big doe eyes go sultry like that.
Her hands make delicate contact with my stomach, pushing her chest against mine. She looks up at me through her lashes, a temptress that should be locked up. “Why won’t you touch me?” She takes my hand, so small in comparison and places it on her ass. “Why won’t you kiss me?” She lifts her chin, her lips mere millimetres from mine.
“Fucking hell, chica bebé, you are my weakness. Do not think for a moment that I don’t want to bury my cock deep into that warm cunt of yours. If I had it my way, I’d have you right here, right now. You’d never even leave the bed and be covered in marks of my making.” My words cause a whimper to leave her mouth, needy and wanting more than ever.
“Then why deny yourself?” Now it’s my turn, I use both my hands and shove her up against the wall. My knees press up against the little amount of fabric that hides that sweet pussy of hers. My head right down against her ear. Kissing and nipping. Leaving purple marks against her neck. Fuck, I promised myself I wouldn’t do that until much later.
I just can’t control myself when her legs wrap around my waist, the water splashes over the edge. Her arms pull me closer. “Because I like seeing you beg. I like hearing your pitiful whines as you beg me to fuck you, like the whore we both know you are. I’ve already given you so much and yet you still want more.”
Her tender finger pull on my hair, now her lips are by my ear. “Please, daddy, please just use me already.” A deep chuckle escapes me. “See? So needy. But you see, mi pequeño, I can’t give you everything you want all at once. It’ll leave you ungrateful. And I don’t tolerate brats. I’m going to leave you wanting and needy. I’ll make the tension so much you’ll want me just as much as I need you.”

I feel like the luckiest Our Flag Means Death fan in the world after the season 2 finale. By a series of incredible circumstances - including a significant metatextual realization that came in at the 11th hour - it was close to perfect for me.
This essay has everything. Completely normal behavior over a television series. Steven Universe references. The David Jenkins School of Whatever is Best for the Bit. Humbling catharsis.
First: this piece does not exist with the central thesis of “it’s okay to not like something but that’s not the same thing as it being bad.” I feel like thousands of words have already been written on this since Thursday, so I’m going to try to not get too in depth on that.
Second, cards on the table, because it’s relevant and I don’t want to waste your time if this is going to sour your ability to hear me out: I’m an Izzy Canyon hater. For MANY reasons, but from way before the concept of the Canyon existed, (some) Izzy fans pinged me in the same way as Snape/Kylo Ren fans did, and before May 2022 was over I went from genuinely enjoying Izzy’s character and place in the narrative to hating him because his fans made it impossible for me to enjoy him anymore.
(SOME! of his fans. Please don’t keep making me say this, although I’m not going to talk about the Canyon directly anymore after this. I know there are a ton of normal Izzy Enjoyers and even Canyonites, I am literally friends with many of them, please take this all in the good faith it’s intended and if you’re not One Of The Bad Ones then you’re fine! I very carefully don’t go anti-Izzy on main, and when I stopped enjoying his character, I stopped writing him into fics. I’m not trying to be a dick, I just want to be honest. Anyway.)
The season 2 finale made me weep over Izzy Goddamn hands.
ALL season long, I was disgruntled. All season long. I really, truly, DEEPLY appreciated what they were doing with his character and arc, I thought it was wildly on brand for the themes of community/queerness in the show, I saw the vision, I liked it!!! But. I wanted a fucking apology, yall. I needed three seconds of “sorry I called you a slur, Ed :/” and that would have been enough. But I had to let it go. It was poisoning my enjoyment of the whole season, which I loved with very little exception (not none!) and I just had to let it go. I wasn’t getting an apology. That didn’t negate what they were doing with his character.
Yall. They withheld the apology on purpose.
THIS FUCKING SHOW!!!
Let’s go back a bit. I was at the episode 6 + 7 screening, and the breakup shook me. Probably a LOT more than if I had watched it alone in bed at 3am on my laptop - five days of no sleep after NYCC, lots of emotions, seeing it on a big screen with a hundred other intense fans, etc etc - but I did see other folks reacting in parallel ways to me when the episodes aired to the regular public, so maybe I would have felt the same way. Regardless, I was mad at Stede and to a lesser extent Ed. I NEEDED AN APOLOGY FOR THAT FISH LINE. I needed it! “Whativah” autocorrects to “WHATIVAH” in my phone. I was going through it.
(When I rewatched the episode when it aired it was not nearly as bad as I remember, lol)
So now the episode 8 screeners go out and the reviews drop and I think I catch one half-glimpse of a “What a heartbreaking ending!” kind of snippet, and some of my friends who are spoiler fiends unintentionally drop little hints about similar ideas (devastating/heartbreaking/split the fandom) type shit.
And I was a fucking WRECK! about it.
I do love this whole show with my whole chest. I do!!! But I’m not rotted because this is an excellent television show, I’m rotted because two old men kiss each other! On the MOUTH!!! in an excellent television show. You get it, right? I’ve written 700,000 words across almost 100 fics and 98% of them are dedicated to those two men falling in love in different universes.
So it just did not even occur to me the “heartbreak/devastation/fandom split” would be about anything but Gentlebeard.
Another piece of this that was fucking me up - David Jenkins and his “satisfactory” ending biz. My brain was reacting like this show was ENDING ending, even if I knew logically! that this is just season 2!!! And I wasn’t ready for that, because what if it wasn’t personally satisfying, and I’m a mess about it? Why was I so worried about not liking it? I’d liked the whole season! Even if they didn’t nail the landing I wasn’t going to stop writing fic or hanging out with my pirate community & friends.
…is what I kept trying to tell myself, but the way anxiety disorders work is funny like that lol. What if I did stop writing fic and hanging out in pirate spaces? That would hurt much more than a show I like disappointing me. And for anyone who’s having that experience with ofmd s2, I’m so very, very sorry. It sucks and that’s where my epiphany came from on Wednesday before the finale.
Because it has happened to me before.
I flit from hyperfocus to hyperfocus, as ya do when you’re spicy, but the last thing to get its hooks in me PROPERLY like pirates was Steven Universe. And I did NOT like the way the regular season ended!!! (I actually really did like most of Future; that’s not what I mean. I mean season 5). I don’t like how they handled the Diamonds, tldr; I think the scope of their villainy got too out of hand, and I was left grieving the thing that had meant enough to me I ran a fan convention for four years based around it.
Side note: imagine if I had channeled the hyperfocus of almost a million words of fanfiction into an American OFMD con instead. We could have made magic :( I did consult with Our Con Means Death though so I am at least a teeny tiny bit of that one!
I did not like the way Steven ended… but I do respect the story they were telling and think they told it well.
I’m still sad about it. Steven is still one of my most beloved, it will always be beautiful and great to me, but that experience did and does sully my memories. There is so, so, so, SO much more good than bad from being in that fandom, and I cherish it. And I hope, if you’re having this experience with OFMD right now, that you’ll find similar comfort.
But, like I said at the top, “it’s okay to not like something but that’s not the same thing as it being bad” has been belabored already by people better at writing about it than me. I just had the incredible privilege to remember my brush with lower case T trauma and having that experience in my last REALLY big deal fandom. That’s why I had been so extra anxious about being disappointed. Because it happened to me before. It helped so much to connect those two.
So the finale happens, and it’s actually about twelve hours of me going from “eh, rushed but fun, whole season was great” to “THIS MAYBE IS THE BEST SHOW OF ALL TIME, ACTUALLY!”
BECAUSE THIS SHOW MADE ME CRY OVER IZZY FUCKING HANDS!!!!
They literally told me this was the story they were telling this season. “Men can change” “The end  of piracy” “Ed leaving Blackbeard behind (ish).”
As for me? I didn’t get an apology for the fish. Instead, I got “Sorry I was a dick.” “You weren’t a dick. Life’s a dick.”
Just… fuckity BAM. THREE FUCKING SENTENCES resolving that fight. Saying so much in so little.
In real life, should these two men have an actual conversation about this shit? Sure!!! But that’s not how OFMD tells its stories!
It works in symbolism. It works in vibes. It works in an hour’s worth of content into each half-hour episode, and for how much lamenting I have done about the pacing, I would prefer that 100x to having to stretch it out too much.
I have said since March 24, 2022 that OFMD wields anachronism as a weapon. First and foremost, it’s fucking funny, but in addition to that, it’s stating clearly: “This is a fantasy world. This is not real history. This show is about romance (and so much more than that), and the rest is just VIBES!!!”
Sometimes vibes can be historical accuracy. Sometimes vibes can be true emotional poignancy. Sometimes vibes can be Ed finding his sunken leathers in the sea, changing underwater somehow, and coming out of the ocean like the Birth of Fucking Venus, because water and rebirth and mermaids and shit is all very prominent this season. And ALSO, and this is very important! BECAUSE IT LOOKS FUCKING COOL!
I don’t want to do much real Izzy meta here. It’s been said by others, and better than me. But it was telegraphed and it was symbolic – he was the paragon of Traditional Piracy in season 1, for goodness’ sake, and Traditional Piracy is Toxic Masculinity, and he was a part of Blackbeard and Ed had to leave Blackbeard behind (yknow, ish), and he got this ABSOLUTLEY FUCKING LOVELY! storyline about appreciating what a (queer) community can do, and god fucking shit fucking dammit… most of all, best of all (for me), was Buttons landing on Izzy’s grave at the end. Men can change. And Izzy DID!!! He did it for Ed. For love. For community. I am puzzled by “it’s fucked up to use Izzy to further Ed’s storyline” because… this was Ed’s season, in the way that season 1 was Stede’s. And Ed cannot be removed from piracy as a whole (neither can Stede!) so to have this old, set in his ways, coded-queerphobic character blossom to the point he can give this gift to Ed and to piracy… idk man. I just find it so fucking beautiful.
It is okay not to like what they did. It’s okay!!! It’s okay, and it’s okay to mourn, and while it’s not okay to do [insert vile behavior here], it’s okay to carefully examine what you think is “bad writing” vs “what you would have preferred to happen” and give good-faith, textually-based criticism on that.
But I want to remind you over and over and over again, this show works on vibes. It tells its stories leaving many, many, many gaps. There are many things I would have liked to see, and y’know what? I would have told the Izzy story differently. I would have personally done it differently. But it’s not my show! It’s not my show, and I am humbled and delighted to remember that, and to appreciate Our Flag Means Death for what it is and not what it isn’t.
Other words have been written better than I could about the 18 months between seasons 1 and 2 and what that does to us as rabid fans with expectations of how things will go. Millions and millions and millions of words have been written about OFMD, fictional and non, and that is going to color our expectations and experience. We had built it up SO MUCH in our minds and along the way I think some of us forgot (INCLUDING ME!!!) that it is first and foremost about Vibes.
The vibes of Izzy’s death are about rebirth and forgiveness and leaving traditional piracy behind. And he got to die in Ed’s arms, knowing (HAPPILY!) that he had been wrong, and giving Ed the gift of letting him know he is loved, and being a part of something. We had a funeral but we also had a wedding. The only constant is change. Men, piracy, Blackbeard; it all changes. And Izzy found peace in that.
Before my last point, I want to @ myself on things I felt versus realizing in the end it is (I will say it until I’m blue in the face) about vibes.
· I was convinced they left Buttons’ transformation ambiguous because they wanted to leave room for it not having been real. NO!!! It is real, until they decided it isn’t. Magic in the OFMD universe? Fucking why not!!! IT’S SYMBOLIC!!! IT’S IMPORTANT TO ED’S STORYLINE AND THE CENTRAL THESES OF THE SHOW!
· I was unhappy, and still am a little, about the Polycule Situation, but now that I realize Oluwande is Zheng’s Stede… I am less so. The Zheng : Auntie :: Ed : Izzy vibes, btw? Fuckin immaculate.
·        Obviously they touched on Stede/Ed’s “killing people trauma” but I’d reallyyyy like Stede to address it, and even though I think Ed’s is left on a very satisfying note, I’d like him to dip a bit more into it as well. But if they don’t, oh well! It’s not like they ignored it, they just didn’t have a Deep Dive like I Wanted Them To!
· They didn’t deal with Ed throwing Stede’s shit away. They just ignored it! Stede started to collect new trinkets, and I believe that was as much about giving the audience back the old feeling of the Revenge as it was anything important (not to say it wasn’t also important thematically!!!). Just like Ed going back to his leathers is both Extremely Important thematically and about putting Taika back in the leathers because that’s what Blackbeard should be wearing for the epic final scenes for the sake of visually keeping the show consistent. That’s Blackbeard’s uniform.
· Stede’s frilly little outfits my beloved. God I hope they give him back some of his frippery in season 3. I think they will re: cursed suit BUT his journey this season was about something else, so!
· Ed’s stupid little non-profit non-apology, oh my god. It was so funny. And there is a transition from eps 5 to 6 where Ed is back in his leathers and the crew is more comfortable around him. They didn’t have to have him do a Real Apology, it’s implied it was all settled. What was the timeline? A day? DOESN’T MATTER, BABY, VIBES!!!
· Lots more, I’m sure, but now that I’ve tried to let it all go, I’m remembering less of what I wanted and appreciating what I got!
And, last point here, I think it is also very very very important to remember that a lot of people are normal about this show. In fact, WAY more people are normal about this show than aren’t. And that is EXTREMELY! IMPORTANT!!! because otherwise it wouldn’t be profitable and we all know what would happen then. We are the core of it, to be sure. Without word of mouth that stems from our intensity, this show would not be NEARLY as successful as it is. I truly, truly believe that.
But.
Do normies need deeply emotional discussions dissecting the central relationships? No. What normies need is Ed and Stede running dramatically toward each other on the beach and kissing. And I am happy, so fucking happy, to realize that’s what I need too. I’ve got fanworks for the rest.
I love this fucking show and this fucking fandom and its fucking creators so much. Fuck.

you putting “megumi needs his mom rn” in the cw makes me wonder how he and the family reacted to yuuji dying after the detention center mission (and also what was the reaction to him coming back since i’m assuming gojo told reader before they revealed it to everyone else)

Your doorbell chimed, glancing at the clock hanging above the fireplace from you’d spot on the sofa, 8 pm? Satoru wasn’t due home until 9 pm plus - he just warped inside your home. Did he order your flowers again? You check the baby monitor and see your 4-month-old is still sound asleep in his crib.
Walking up to the door, you sensed a very familiar cursed energy. Megumi? What’s he doing here, it’s Wednesday.
You could hear the rain and thunder pouring and hitting your windows in waves.
You open the door, and you see nothing.
A whimper emanates from beside you, and on the ground – slumped against the doorway is your eldest boy.
You fall on your knees beside him.
“Megumi! Baby, what’s going on? You’re going to catch a cold.” You brush his hair out of his face, and you are stricken with the realisation that he is crying. His angular face is so devoid of any emotion, but the tears scream otherwise. You could count the number of times you’ve seen him cry in 10 years on one hand and you hadn’t been prepared for this tonight.
“Jesus, baby what’s going on?” You try to heave him up from the ground and he’s as limp as a rag doll as you try to guide him inside the door. The hallway is as far as you can manage his weight before you give in and shut the door to the outside world. He’s now just leaned against your sage green wall, if he wasn’t breathing, you’d think he was comatose.
Only now do you realise he’s bleeding. His lip is busted, and his eyebrow is too. But what type of curse would elicit this reaction?
“Megumi? Honey? Talk to me - what’s happened?” You kneel beside him, one hand on his shoulder, the other on the top of his head.
Empty eyes, now a dull blue, look up at you through lashes soaked with rain and tears.
“He’s dead.” The tiniest voice, again, void of emotions.
Satoru? No – you had been on the phone with him 20 minutes ago.
“He killed him.” His eyes are facing you – but they’re looking straight through you.
“Who’s dead, Megumi?” You probe – anxiety gripping your stomach like a vice.
“Sukuna – ripped his heart out. In front of me. Just ripped it out. His heart. He’s dead.” The words are barely intelligible in the mumbles that come from his out and you’re still as confused, Sukuna? How could- oh my god Yuuji is dead.
Yuuji Itadori.
Dead.
“Oh my god – fuck. Megumi, my sweet boy.” At this point, he turned to you.
He looked into your eyes.
He turned his head and vomited on the floor beside him.
You pull him into you, tears flooding your face as you think about that sweet, sweet boy – a soul too good for this world so brutally ripped out of it.
You wipe his mouth on your sweater sleeve and once again haul him up into your grasp he almost falls but you pull on every muscle fibre you had – you needed to get him dry and cleaned up.
A memory played in your mind, a sense of déjà vu – Satoru vomiting and sobbing and you shaking with tears curled up together – the loss of another best friend. The fates were cruel masters to make you relive this scene again.
Once he was up the stairs you lay him on his bed. Where he just sat on the edge, legs still on the ground and stared at his shoes. He went to vomit again, and this time you caught it with a bucket you’d retrieved from the closet.
“I need to get a cloth. I’ll be right back.” He didn’t acknowledge this. You just needed a moment to gather yourself before you went back in - you’d be no good to him if you continue to try to help in the state you're in, a mess of shock and grief and anger. White hot anger.
You shut the en suite door of his room behind you, and you rush to the toilet and heave up all of your remaining food at the mental image of that darling boy laying cold and dead and gutted on the ground.
You give yourself a moment – your son and you breathe so that you can deal with everything later – wait, does Satoru know?
Grabbing a cloth – you go into the room, laying the cloth down for a moment, you go into your and Satoru’s room and grab one of his sweatshirts. In Megumi’s room, you pull sweatpants from his wardrobe and look at your son. He’s dripping rainwater onto the carpet and there’s blood from his injuries mingling, tinging it pink.
You think some of the puddles might be tears, his or your own, you don’t know.
You stand in front of him, remembering the times when you’d do this to help him into his frog pyjamas - he was only 6 back then – 16 now and 5ft 9 – almost a whole foot taller than you. You lift his arms and unzip his jacket – his T-shirt underneath is soaked through too. You peel them both from him and check for cuts on his torso – bruises, old and fresh – but no blood.
You pull Satoru’s sweatshirt over his head, and he doesn’t even seem to notice that you’re moving him. He’s just limp in your arms, and you swear to anyone who’s listening to if you could take that pain and shoulder, it yourself then you would.
You peel his slacks down, pulling his sweatpants (a Christmas present from your brother) onto his lanky legs you tuck his hair behind his ears and dry it with a cloth. You then dab at his bleeding wounds, they’re clotting now, and the bleeding is stopping.
You throw the cloth away to the far side of the room.
He’s seen enough blood for today.
Tears are flowing freely from you both as you sit beside him on the edge of the bed.
Your proximity must trigger him back to this plane of existence and he looks at you.
“I couldn’t save him.”
“I know sweet boy, but it’s not your fault. You did everything you could.”
“It was a special grade – he, the curse had a finger. Our mission didn’t say any of that.”
“A special grade? Was Satoru there?” He couldn’t have been, he was in Osaka today.
“No. Just me and Kugisaki and Itadori.” His voice quavers.
You knew exactly what happened. It was clear from even the bare minimum you had heard.
But – now was not the time. Willing yourself to push the thoughts aside. Megumi doesn’t need that right now.
“You did everything you could, ‘Gumi. There was nothing you could have done.”
This was his kryptonite. A heavy, choked sob broke through the air and his body collapsed onto you.
“His heart – he ripped it out. He was right there and he just – momma, he’s dead. I couldn’t save him, Momma.” You broke down, sobbing yourself, cradling this boy – this poor broken boy, into your chest as you hugged him so tight you could feel every shake of his body in your own. You carefully moved. you both so you could sit against his headboard with his sobbing head laid on your stomach.
You are so grateful that Akio is a heavy-sleeping baby because you need to focus on your oldest son now. He needed you, and you were his to protect him, 100%.
You stroke his hair and whisper placating nothing into his ear. Nothing will fix this. Nothing will make it easier or make it feel better. You just need to be here; you just need to hold him now. You can tell him until the cows come home that he did all he could, he couldn’t have stopped Sukuna, that it was not his fault – but all these worlds will refuse to sink in until he’s ready to hear them. Yet, you tell him anyway. Over and over again.
You’ve no idea how much time passes. Your tears mingle with the lingering water on the side of his head as you cry with him but eventually, the sobs turn into heavy breaths, and you realise he’s passed out. Sheer exhaustion has taken his body hostage and for a second, you’re put at peace knowing at least right now – his mind will be quiet.
You slip your phone from your pocket, without moving or disturbing the boy on your lap.
‘Please call me.’ A message from Satoru.
You ring him.
The phone barely dials once before you hear his voice – hoarse.
“Y/N. I –”
“I know ‘Toru. Megumi came home.”
“I’m sorry. I wasn’t there.” He sounds so broken.
“You have no reason to be sorry baby, we both know how this managed to come to pass.” You hated that he always still felt the weight of the whole world on his shoulders.
“I’ll kill them all.” He says, and you know he’s serious.
“You could, but you won’t. Maybe 10 years ago – maybe then we’d have done it together. But not now, not anymore.” You reply, voice still thick with tears.
There’s silence.
“Where are you, ‘Toru?”
“The morgue.”
“Shoko?”
“On her way in.”
“I can’t leave the boys.”
“I’ll be home soon.”
“I love you.”
“I love you.”
He hangs up the phone. Nothing more needs to be said. These feelings are sadly all too familiar to you both. You realise Shoko will have to do the autopsy.
She delivered Akio 4 months ago. Now she’d be cutting up the corpse of the boy who waited outside of the labour ward for 16 hours.
You lean your head back – closing your eyes. Flashes of a pink head tossing back in laughter and strong arms hugging you in thanks, of meatballs served to you as you nurse your newborn and the Spider-Man lamp being plugged in making you smile at the giddy teenager. The faces change, now they’re old and wrinkled and whisper words with serpentine tongues laced with deceit and heartlessness in their actions. They knew what they were doing. Satoru wasn’t in Osaka for no reason. They knew.
They all fucking knew.
They sent him to his death, knowingly and intentionally. They sent three children into a trap all because they are scared. Cowards who hide behind words of ‘the good of society’ and the guise of ‘the greater good’. Satoru and you had screamed and pushed and threatened to stay the execution, but they found a loophole anyway.
They risked Megumi and Nobara – did they think you wouldn’t piece together the big picture? Did they think that you wouldn’t realise?
You don’t know how long you sat there but your phone buzzed again.
📲Satoruuuuu is Calling… ✅⛔️
You pick up.
“He’s alive.”
“What?”
“He’s alive. Yuuji’s alive. Sukuna woke him up…” There are so many tones in his voice and so many thoughts in your head you have to close your eyes.
“Are you sure?”
“Well - he’s talking and walking so unless The Last of Us was accurate then…” he attempts a joke – relief clear in his voice.
You softly lift the head from your lap, and place it on the navy pillow. He doesn’t stir.
You walk out into your room, sitting on the balcony – the air was what you needed.
“I don’t know what to say.” That is all you can manage.
The torrent of emotions your mind went through was making you so dizzy you sat on the wooden chair looking at the sky.
“He’s not safe here, they’re going to come for him.” Satoru’s voice comes, quiet through the phone.
“What will we do?” You say.
“He needs time, he needs to train and learn to manipulate and use his cursed energy. If he can protect himself…” Satoru begins.
“We need to hide him. He can’t stay at school or come here.” Your sorcerer’s brain was switched on now.
“I can’t bring him to the Gojo estate either, the elders the family visit too much.” He speaks.
Lightbulb.
“They visit your family… but they’d never think to visit mine. Satoru, bring him to my mom’s. I’ll call her, you can train him there every day, and if we’re being watched it’s not suspicious to visit our own family. She’ll take care of him.” You say, you knew that your family would protect this boy with their lives, he was family to Megumi, family to you.
“Y/N… we can’t tell anyone. The only people who know are me, you, Shoko and Ijichi.” He says, and your heart stops.
You’ll have to lie to Megumi.
“Fuck. It’s too dangerous for him to know – if they catch wind of this, and they find out he knows…” you say.
“He’ll be branded a traitor. Who knows what they’d do for information.”
“He’s going to hate us.”
“He’ll understand. He’s a smart kid.”
“Come home to me, to us – ‘toru. Bring him to my parents and then please come home.” You whisper to him.
He agrees and tells you he loves you.
The weeks fly by as you feel yourself crumbling from the weight of the sadness spilling from your son, Kugisaki isn’t much better and Satoru is still reeling from the elder’s deceit. You stormed to the council meeting the following day and threatened to burn the place to the ground if they so much as considered harming a hair on the head of the other kids.
“Unfortunate circumstances occur on missions. Nobody knows the outcome of these situations.” They fought.
“Oh – you knew the outcome of this one. You knew full well. All of you, every single one of you knew and you allowed it. In legal terms, that’s murder. You’re all sociopaths and whatever awaits you in the next world, I hope it hurts even a fraction of the pain you’ve all caused. Endanger my family again, and I’ll deal with you all personally – never mind Satoru.”
The training was going well – you had gone to your mother’s house two days after his resurrection, after the water cooled and you were sure you weren’t being surveilled.
You had run to Yuuji, running your eyes and hands over every bit of him, checking for wounds and crying into his shoulder. He had died, and somehow you were being comforted by him.
Satoru and you explained the situation, taking turns to train with him. They came up with a ridiculous idea of Yuuji playing Jack in the Box at the exchange event all you could do was allow it.
Back home – you explained to Megumi that the mission had been a nefarious plot concocted by the elders and higher ups to get rid of Yuuji, since you and your husband kept getting in the way – they took the opportunity of your maternity leave to send Gojo to Osaka and place the kids in the path of a Special Grade Curse. You hoped being armed with this information would help him understand why you and Satoru had lied to him, and allowed him to grieve. It hurt you, but his safety was paramount.
When the day came and Yuuji was released, you stood beside Megumi as he and Nobara watched him return from the dead. Jaws hanging open, they couldn’t tear their eyes from their friend.
Reunions and rejoicing complete, you and Satoru pulled Megumi by the sleeve away from the scene, into your classroom.
When the door shut, you began to sob.
“‘Gumi, I’m so sorry. We didn’t have any choice but to keep it a secret. It –” Satoru wraps you into his chest.
“We had to keep it secret, because they would have killed anyone involved if they found out, kiddo. We had to keep you safe.” He says hand on Megumi’s shoulder and a crying wife clinging to him.
“It’s okay.” Megumi shrugs.
You freeze, you thought he’d never forgive you.
“What?” You and Satoru say in unison.
“I get why you did it. Thank you, guys, – for helping him, and uh – for protecting us all.” He says and God this boy will never fail to amaze you. His maturity was something you and Satoru could only have dreamed of at his age and even rarer was hearing such genuine praise from him – he was softer with you, but this was directed to you both.
Wordlessly, you and Satoru wrapped him in your arms and he begrudgingly and awkwardly reciprocated the affection.
Over his head, you looked at your husband. His crystalline eyes filled with relief and love for you and your patchwork family, and you pressed a soft kiss to his lips – a silent thank you for everything you do. The road was never easy, but God was it worth it.

Out at sea…
Disclaimer: So a long time ago I read a fic about Emma having her and Hooks baby on the boat and thought I might twist it a little and give us another chapter to our Regina x reader stories.
Pairing: Regina Mills x reader
Summary: After a hard stretch of weeks the family has a day out but what happens when one member decides to finally make an appearance.
******************************************************** You stood on the ship deck near the bow watching the sea roll out in front of you, being 8 1/2 months pregnant most people would get sea sick but instead you stood letting it calm you. Being commander of armies in the enchanted forest you did a lot of traveling and you grew up on a boat your mother being a notorious pirate, so it always had a way of taking you back to your roots. You felt a pair of arms wrap around you from behind and someone’s chin rested on your shoulder, “enjoying the view?”
“mmm…” you said in response pressing you head into her cheek. “It has a way of taking me back.” You then fully turned in her arms allowing your body to relax into her, taking in the sight before you long black wind blown hair with her deep brown eyes, she didn’t wear makeup and you smiled at how she let out a smirk her perfect white teeth peaking through.
“Do you ever miss it?” She asked holding you the best she could your bump in the way.
“The enchanted forest? Sometimes.”
“Really?” She asked and you pulled back slightly looking over each other features.
“Yea but that’s not my home anymore, I’m not that person.”
“I can understand that.”
“Regina, listen to me love, I wouldn’t go back to how it was, coming here gave me this beautiful life, and friends and most importantly you, I would never go back if it meant losing you or this baby.”
“You are both my entire world and Henry, I couldn’t lose any of you.” Before you could both say anything else you heard clashing of wood behind you, turning around you watched as Henry and David fought with wooden swords, Emma laughed with Snow as Hook stood managing the helm.
“Hey Y/N care to join?” David called to you, as Henry ran towards you with and extra sword.
You laughed as you and Regina made you way towards the group, “You know its a good thing I’m pregnant otherwise I would come kick your butt.”
“I’d like to see that.” Henry said as you rustled his hair.
“Soon buddy, and I’ll show your grandpa how it’s done.”
“Oh yea!” He said excitedly running back towards the action. Regina had found a spot next to Emma and Snow motioned next to her. You made your way over and slowly lowered yourself.
“So how you feeling mama?” Emma asked.
“As can be expected.” You shrugged.
“I’m sure you’re ready to go though.” Snow mentioned.
“Oh you have no idea.” You shifted uncomfortably in the seat, Regina eyed you carefully.
“how much longer?”
“Depends they said 2-4 weeks Zelena is thinking I’ll be overdue.”
“I’m sure it’ll work out, Charming babies have a tendency to come early.”
“Well luckily she’s not a Charming.” Regina laughed, but you shifted uncomfortably again.
“let me tell you though I don’t think I can do another month, every muscle aches all the time and don’t get me started on the smells, I feel superhuman some days.” Everyone laughed, you all sat and enjoyed the sun before the sky started to cloud over slightly making a cool breeze blow, you let it soothe you but it wasn’t long before your muscles started to ache and you were shifting again, you decided to walk it off. Making your way towards the helm to talk to Killian the other three ladies talking, Regina kept a close eye on you, watching you talk to Hook.
“Hey love you okay?”
“Good as I’ll ever be, just a little sore.”
“You don’t get seasick do you I mean with the baby and all.”
you chuckled, “No I was practically raised at sea so I find it calming.”
“raised at sea?”
“My mother was a pirate, I was her only daughter and she wasn’t going to stop for anyone.”
“Sounds exciting.”
“Yea well everyone has their skeletons.” You felt a hand come to your back, you turned being met by Snow.
“Hey you okay, Regina is down there watching you like a hawk.”
“That’s my wife… I’m just really sore and sitting there wasn’t helping, besides like I said earlier Zelena thinks I have at least two weeks.”
“True but babies come on their own time, she’s just being careful, she cares for you and this baby a lot.”
“I don’t know what I ever did to deserve her.” You both smiled, you watched as the sky was still cloudy, one wave rolled just enough and came up over the side of the ship splashing Henry and David below Regina and Emma laughed at the boys but you were preoccupied by the puddle at your feet.
“Only our boys, am I right?” Snow laughed, but got no response from you, she turned and saw the puddle at your feet.
“Wait that splash wasn’t that big…Y/N?”
“Okay scratch the whole two week thing I think my water just broke.”
“Oh god okay, Regina!” As soon as Snow called she was bounding up the stairs Emma hot on her heels.
“what’s going on?”
“I…uh… mm… my water just…uhhh god here comes one.” You said reaching out, Regina catching you as you dug your nails into her forearm but she didn’t care.
“Looks like another family member wanted to make their appearance today.” Snow said a hand on your back as you leaned into Regina both of them trying to guide you down stairs, you heard Hook call to Emma to put you in his chambers as they’d have more room.
You could hear everyone frantically moving around and it wasn’t helping as you tried breathing through contractions.
“Wait…” you said making it into the large room the bed in the middle, hook redid the inside after permanently moving in with Emma and made this more of a luxury boat, on with large ornate rooms made for comfort which right now you had mixed feelings about.
“What wrong?” Regina asked looking at you.
“Zelena…” you said trying to catch your breath, “You need to call Zelena.”
“Why… aren’t we going to make it back in time?” Emma said looking between the three of you.
Regina and Snow shared a look, “Emma were 6 hours off shore, this baby might not wait that long.”
“Um….hhhnghhh…” you tried speaking another contraction interrupting you.
“it’s okay love.” Regina said feeling your nails dig into her arm again, grip tightening as you battled another.
“No….no, Zelena thinks there’s complications with the baby…I…she needs to be here…please you need to call her.”
“Comp…complications?” Regina said, she was so focused but you saw the war starting behind her eyes, she thought about losing you or this baby, she couldn’t do that not again, she’s fought so hard for a happy ending.
“Regina…baby?” You said squeezing her hand and pulling her out of her ugly daydream, “it might not be anything but…” you winced through another contraction.
“Better safe than sorry…” another female voice filled the room and everyone turned their heads.
“Zelena?” Regina looked at her sister, hopeful and confused.
“Hey sis, Hook called,” the redhead looked sympathetically at the younger raven-haired woman who was still guarding you with her body. Before anyone could say anything else you let out a loud guttural moan filling the room. Zelena quickly rushed to your side, placing her bag on the bed in front of you, it was a little higher than normal so you were currently standing next to it, gripping the blankets on the edge not wanting to move.
"Okay mama just breathe through it... how long has she been contracting?" she looked around the room, all faces showing that no one was sure.
"I've been having braxton hicks, or that's what I thought they were, they started around 8 this morning, and my water broke about 20-30 minutes ago."
"It's 4pm... you've been contracting for 8 hours."
"Y/N, why didn't you say anything?" Regina asked concerned.
"I didn't want to worry anyone and y'all were so excited about today, and after the past couple of weeks we really needed it... besides I've treated so many first time moms and they always mistake pre-term contractions for the real deal."
"Darling..."
"I...mnhnhhh...I promise it wasn't...hnhgnhhh."
"Okay mama, these babies aren't waiting I'm going to need to check you out." without thinking about it Zelena let out the little secret you’d both been keeping, helping you drop your pants and get up on the bed she covered your legs with a blanket as you fell back against the pillows.
“Zelena did you just say babies?” Snow asked shocked.
“Um…what’s she talking about? Zelena what does she mean?”
“Twins… we’re having twins.” You strained out sitting up on your elbows.
“I’m sorry I only found out a few weeks ago and Y/N had me promise.”
“that was before she was going to go into labor 6 hours from Storybrooke and on a boat!” Regina yelled.
“Babe… I didn’t wanna get your hopes up, not until we were sure…gahhhhh.”
“She’s right we weren’t sure how it happened but after the run in with our mother something with our magics altered the pregnancy, I wanted to make sure everything was okay with the babies.” Zelena explained as you fought through another contraction.
“Talk later… these babies are coming now.”
“Okay breathe I need to check how dilated you are,” Regina moved to your side while Zelena dug through her bag pulling on gloves, “okay mama little pinch and pressure, just gotta check here.” You nodded letting out a small whimper as you felt her checking you out. “Okay Y/N you’re a lot farther than I thought.”
“what’s that supposed to mean?”
“it means that your baby’s head is almost crowning so this is typically when you start pushing.”
“Wait I thought we had a couple hours?” Regina asked worried, her worst fear was coming back, she couldn’t lose any of you and being out at sea was amplifying all those fears.
“Right now that’s not the issue, these babies are coming whether we want them to or not.” Zelena said trying to snap Regina out of it.
“What do you need from us?” Snow asked into the room.
“Well Snow I’m going to need your hands, Emma I want you to take care of everything above deck, I don’t care what you have to do get us back ASAP…” both women nodded and moved quickly. “Okay now Y/N I need some pushes from you so we can deliver baby number one.” You nodded and some screaming a pushing and a little blood later and cried filled the room as your little boy was born, things moved quickly Snow wrapping him up and holding him while more contractions rolled over you.
It wasn’t long before you felt baby two getting ready, but you watched as she leaned and said something to Snow “Wh-What’s going on?”
“Y/N I need you to…” Zelena started.
“Wh-What’s going on with my baby?”
“Your baby is breech, which worries me with being on a boat and far from the hospital.”
“S-so whagahh- does that mean?”
“Y/N…”
“Zelena do what you need to do, if you need to cut, cut.”
“WHAT NO!” Regina yelled.
“No no nobody is getting cut, I’m not doing a cesarean on a boat, I can do an external version but it’s going to hurt like hell.”
“Do it!.. whatever you need to do, do it.” She nodded and placed her hands on your exposed bump feeling for the baby, she had one hand higher and one lower and tried rotating the bag and she wasn’t wrong it did hurt, Regina was on the bed next you and you turned clinging to her, face pressed against her chest, one arm folded under you as the other gripped onto her bicep, nails digging into her arm as she held you.
“Okay I think baby’s turned, Y/N I need some really big pushes from you.” Two pushes later and you were so close to holding your baby but instead another complication.
“hold on, don’t push, stop pushing.”
“bu—but… what’s wrong?” Zelena looked up at you sympathetically, she placed a hand on your knee.
“The baby… it’s the cord, it’s wrapped around its neck.”
“Zelena save my…nnnghh…save my baby…”
“I will…err… I am.” You could feel pressure and she tried maneuvering your baby and getting the cord loose.
“okay im going to need a really big, big push to help your baby… can you do that for me?” She asked and you nodded, “okay on count of three, 1…2…” you pushed with everything you had, delivering your baby and she quickly started working you sobbed in your wife’s arms as you didn’t hear anything.
after what seemed like an eternity a strong cry filled the room, “yes baby girl, yes, oh God okay… congratulations you have a beautiful baby girl.” She said handing her to the both of you, tears rolled down your faces.
4 hours later you found yourself laid up in the maternity suite at the hospital Zelena was evaluating you to make sure everything went okay as your babies got checked it by the nurses, Regina sat next to you filling out their names on the birth certificate, refusing to leave your side.
