Deep-Fried Burger Buns? This "Desi Burger" Has Twitter Divided
Many of us have our favourite street food stalls whose snacks bring comfort that restaurant food never can. Let’s face it: most of these stalls use certain ingredients and techniques that are not exactly great for health – but we frequent them anyway because taste conquers all. Besides, eating spicy fried food in a crowded “khau galli” is a special experience in itself. Even when it comes to…

From the rustic kampong (term for village) in Malaysia came this packet of homemade Spicy Tapioca Chips. The tapioca (木薯) or cassava is hand-peeled and shaven into thin rounds then dried before frying in hot oil. Seasonings like sugar, salt and chilli powder are added to give it that savoury sweet, yet slightly spicy flavours. It is so addictive as you munch on one piece after another.

Beer Battered Fried Green Beans
Tumblr media
Prep Time 15 mins
Cook Time 15 mins
Total Time 30 mins
INGREDIENTS
1 1/4 pound fresh green beans washed and trimmed
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour divided
1/2 teaspoon cumin
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups beer
vegetable oil for frying
DIRECTIONS
In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the ingredients for the sriracha dipping sauce. Cover and refrigerate while you move on to the next steps.
Toss the green beans with 1/2 cup of the flour until well coated.
In a mixing bowl or pie plate, mix together the remaining 2 cups of flour with the cumin, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, pepper, and salt. Slowly add the beer, stirring well until it creates a thick batter.
Heat 1-2 inches of vegetable oil in a large pot or Dutch oven to 375°F. Dip the green beans into the beer batter, then very carefully drop into the hot oil (this might be best to do with heat-proof tongs). Fry the green beans in small batches for 2-3 minutes until golden brown. Very carefully remove them from the hot oil and drain on paper towels.
Serve the green beans warm with your choice of dipping sauce.

For this Hari Raya season, Old Chang Kee (老曾记) is bringing back the Chicken Satay’O (S$2.30) but only for one month starting 14th March 2024. This new “improved” version comes with tender satay chicken meat pieces, onion and peanut gravy except the cucumber and ketupat.

Bought two pieces of the Chicken Satay’O when I am out doing grocery shopping. Slicing the still warm puff in half to show you what is inside. It is filled with chunks of chicken meats and peanut gravy. Taste wise, you do get that satay profile with a hint of spiciness though the peanut flavour seems muted. Personally, I wish that the satay taste is more pronounced but overall, still a decent eat.

surya cafe, klang.
came here for some snacks after a very full brunch after coming back from cameron highlands. the cafe is quite comfortable and has a cozy feeling overall, the staff is also friendly and nice, lots of food options on the menu too.
ordered iced americano for drinks, and some snacks - sweet potato fries, fried squid and mushroom soup. the sweet potato fries is crispy and very addictive, love this very much, even more than normal french fries. squid is flavorful and crispy as well, it is a very enjoyable snack. mushroom soup is slightly on the salty side, but still taste good.
the ambiance of the place makes chilling out here very nice and laid back. the food and drinks price is also reasonable, a good recommendation by my friend.
