Very often, people I don't know well have said something to me like, "That's what I like about you! Your attitude is amazing, you're never down about anything!"

And I'm like... Okay firstly why would you assume if I've never vented to one specific near-stranger that means I'm never unhappy?

And secondly, okay, message received, if I'm ever really struggling and ask for support there's a pretty significant chance you will drop me immediately!

If what you like about me is that I'm never unhappy, what you like is the distance between us.

It's notable that this comes up most often with people trying to spin me as some kind of inspiration porn due to my disabilities (or more rarely, from ppl who know parts of my history, my unusual & bad past experiences).

It feels like a desperate self-soothing tactic. If I'm some kind of Happiness Saint, you don't have to grapple with the fact that real people are actually impacted by their bad experiences.

It's also notable that, while, yes, I think I'm by default pretty happy, I also have a tendency to automatically minimize my suffering when speaking to ppl in my life so I don't develop a reputation for being "negative" or "a downer" for being impacted by serious health issues.

Being complimented for that survival strategy feels shitty, because I want to feel safe being honest about it when I'm really struggling! I want to be able to vent like the healthy ppl in my life are allowed to! I want to be able to just say I've been having really bad pain days for like a month and have that not Make It Awkward & suddenly the other person starts avoiding me or badmouthing me to deal with their discomfort.

It's really isolating to carry around the constant awareness that if you're honest about what your life is like, most people will react with dehumanizing pity at best and at worst spin you as some kind of malingering malicious Drama Queen.

Please make the effort to be chill about the physically disabled people in your life. A pedestal is an incredibly fragile position to be in, and my balance is poor and I'm dizzy!

Let me just be a person with good days and bad days. I shouldn't have to perform to Disabled Stereotype #6 to gain a tenuous social acceptance that will be yanked away every time I acknowledge the fact that my life is different from yours.

I need your help with a hypothesis!

For context: My linguistics professor and I got into a discussion after a test she did with us, and I was of the opinion that the reason for the results was different from the one she offered, so she encouraged me to test my theory.

What I need

All you need to do is draw a coffee cup (with a handle, not the disposable stuff) and then answer three questions.

I don't need to see the coffee cup. You can draw it wherever you like; on a piece of paper, digitally, in the sand, on a foggy window. Anything works. It does not have to be good. A doodle is fine.

You have to draw the coffee cup before you see the questions. This is very important. If you decide to help me with this, please doodle the coffee cup before you keep reading.

Assuming you have drawn the coffee cup, I now need you to answer these three questions:

On which side did you draw the handle?

Are you right-handed or left-handed?

Do you primarily write using the Latin alphabet or a different one? (please specify which)

More context

Most people will draw the handle on the right side. My professor says it's because most people are right-handed, so they draw the handle in the direction that would be comfortable for them to pick up.

I said drawing it on the right side just felt more comfortable to my hand and argued it's probably because we write a bunch of letters like that. B, b, D, P, p, R all look like a tiny "handle on the right side" and are all a straight line followed by a round one (so "cup first, handle second," like most people draw cups). The Latin alphabet doesn't have letters like that that face the other way, except maybe d, depending on how you write it, so it makes sense to me that people writing mostly Latin letters would go with the handle on the right side.

Which means that I need to know what Asians, Arabs and Greeks do and if the distribution of left and right sides of handles differs from the Latin alphabet group. Cyrillic seems to favor right, too, though it'd be interesting to see if there are differences.

If there are, my theory is right. Doubly so if there is a sizeable increase in a group whose alphabet has letters that benefit the left side choice.

So feel free to spread this to as many people as you like and put the answers in the comments or the tags of a reblog. The more answers I get, the better I can assess whose theory is better.

the pokemon teraleak is big news and even though i've only begun to scratch the surface i can tell there's an absolute ton of fun stuff to uncover in here (which I will gladly do). however. we also need to acknowledge the fact that this is a very bad thing. this isn't just some internal whistleblower throwing us a bone like we're used to. this was a malicious hack. we're only getting all this information because a game freak employee got phished. satoshi tajiri himself has come out and stated that the personal information of more than 2600 game freak employees was compromised in the attack. what happened here should not have happened and we should hope that it doesn't again, for the personal safety of those involved.
