Confessions of a Recovering Genre-Phobic 02/04/2024
Hey Whores;
God what is this week? Well work has fucking sucked. People calling in sick, one of the refrigerators going down. Also one of my favorite work friends has left the chat to go on to green pastures and I just need to get out of there and move on with my life right?
In terms of love IDFK right? Ok here me out why bitches got to take so long to text you back and I get that its probably me just being triggered and having filters or some shit but also bitch. Treat me like a king. act like you want to be with me or some shit. I think its a lot were when people don't text me back its cause they have a life and our doing things and I distract myself with dumb shit because I hav eno goddamn friends. Anyway thanks for reading this prime example.
IDFK. Thanks for listening here are my dumb bitch thoughts on music and also Lelslie Hall has 5 albums and its homophobic you never told me...................................emrwopirjaksdlfjasklfjasdlk;fjasdlkf.

Footnotes For the Spring (2015) - Eliza Rickman
Genre: Folk, Baroque Pop? Length: 43:15 (11 Tracks)
Ok gurl I'm bad at describing genres Eliza Rickman is somewhere between Florence Welch and the Unwoman. She's what evermore Taylor wishes to be. Just imagine a feyish women in a white chiffon gown in a field of daisys singing baleful songs that are maybe sexual???
I don't have a lot to say about this album. If you like Eliza Rickman your gonna like this. She has a certain sound and I love it because I love beautiful esoteric women.
3.5/5 (I'm starting to feel like my number ratings don't mean shit.)

Too Young To Be Sad (2021) EP - Tate McRae
Genre: Pop, R&B? Length: 17:32 (6 Tracks)
Tumblr media
All The Things I Never Said (2020) EP - Tate McRae
Genre: Pop, R&B? Length: 15:00 (5 Tracks)
Ok I think I was confusion Addison Rae with Olivia Rodriguez. and then confusing her with Tate McRae. I'm really sorry pop girlies.
When I first heard Tate McRae I was up at a ridicoulas hour in december and felt like I should be hip with THEE YOUTHSSSSS.
I vagualy remember her as a bedroom pop girly singing these sad piano ballads and honestly did I jsut mix her up with another singer. Cause like I distinctly remember her doing like sad piano ballads and this ain't it. Which is a great thing because I actually kinda love this.
Like lets be real this is pretty standard what I think R&B is. WHich gurl how did I forget a complete genre of music. and you know what im ok with this being a bit generic because I don't know the genre and I'm vibing.
Ill have to check out her full albums and sorry for the shit I was talking earlier.
4/5 for both EPs.
Tumblr media
Hot Buttered Soul (1969) - Isaac Hayes
Genre: Soul Length: 45:24 (4 Tracks)
Ok so apparently this is a seminal album in the Soul Genre. Which ok. I'm sure it is but I feel like I'm do much of a dummy to get it.
IDK bitch you know what soul music sounds like? well good this has a 20 minutes Track in it so do with that information what you will.
2/5

Home Vol. 1 EP (2012) - JohnnySwim
Genre: Folk Length: 18:48 (5 Tracks)
I don't have much to say about this album. Have you heard any 2010s folk music? This is it. We have beautiful voices. Clapping, and stories of love and heartbreak. I mean what more do you want babygirl?
3/5

Ambient 1: Music for Airports (1978) - Brian Eno
Genre: Ambient Length: 42:20 (4 Tracks)
So I don't actually know if I ever finished this album.
Mostly because this album was meant as an instullation piece where it would be looped ad naseum but suffice to say.
BItch do you know what Ambient Music is? Its like music thats more about a calm and chill tone then it is about being energetic or attention grabbing. Its music thats designed to be ignored. The elegance of design.
This is fantastic. Sexisest Airport Music I would stick in my gob anytime.
4/5

Uptown Special (2015) - Mark Ronson
Genre: Funk, R&B Length: 38:50 (11 Tracks)
Uptown Special is probably most known by the layman for being the album that made Uptown Funk which is ft. Bruno Mars. I was already under the impression that it was the other way around. So I have learned and so have you.
I don't have much to say about this album. Think about funk music. Now imagine is someone made a really solid funk album with a bunch of fantastic guest artist including Stevie Wonder??? Thats crazy.
If anything Uptown Funk is one of the weakest song on this tracklist definetly worth a listen.
4/5
Tumblr media
Cool Patrol (2018) - Ninja Sex Party
Genre: Comedy Rock? (thats what it says on Wikipedia will get into it) Length: 37:28 (15 Tracks)
OK did I like? Ninja Sex Party or was I just kinda horny for the vast majority of 2010s LP's. (I don't think I'm gay for Markiplier.... but)
So Ryen? What the fuck is Ninja Sex Party. ok. So its the 2010s, youtuber is full of comedic music videos and a star is born somewhere in the conceptional space adjacent to acts like LMFAO and Wierd Al. NSP is a comedic music duo consisting of Danny SexBang who is that guy in the spandex and Ninja Brian who is the mall ninja guy. SexBang likes to fuck and Brian likes to murder people a lot.
Most of the songs are these comedic sex jokes filled with dick puns and the music style is very 80s glam rock or power ballad. There not wrong when you call it comedic rock but its very limiting. Its very much a parody of those kinda corny 80s love ballads but NSP also dips there toes in Space Opera, comedic skits and so on and so forth. There pretty fun. If your a fan of like Leslie Hall or Key of Awesome or any other 2000s - 2010s comedic music artist then youd get a kick out of them.
This is pretty fun. Its like a dirty weird al yankovic album. Its not that deep fan.

hi, friends. I shared a few days ago that I haven't been able to write since I posted chapter 8 at the beginning of January. It's been rough ngl. Every time I thought about writing, I wondered what was the point? (I know the point but depressive episodes don't really give a fuck.)
have you heard about federal programs and departments dropping the 'T' from LGBTQ? it's awful and dangerous. (one awful thing in a sea of horrifying things.) it's also stupid and desperate. because they can't erase us, no matter how hard they try.
but also: visibility matters. it saves lives.
over the past few days, as snow fell upon my city, I grabbed my phone and started tapping out a handful of sentences. there is so much out of my control, but I can write queer stories. I'm dreaming up some trans characters, and I'm working on some original fic again. dev and niall deserve their ending in mtaf.
so. here are a few sentences from chapter 9 of more than a footnote. this is in the messy draft stage, but I'm still sharing them because I think I like these lines. placing under the cut because SPOILERS. don't read if you haven't read through chapter 8 yet.
Dev POV
"Piss off," I snarl to [redacted], "you pathetic, wanking troglobite." "Troglobites are quite a feat of evolution, you know," Niall murmurs to me, not granting [redacted] a single glance; he's more preoccupied with scratching his fingers through my hair at the back of my neck. "So that isn't the burn you think it is." I pin Niall with my most aggrieved look. "Omigod, could you please stop being the cutest fucking nerd for five seconds? I'm trying to insult someone here." Niall grins, mouths okay, and kisses me. The clatter of breakfast and [redacted] and the entire goddamn dining hall fade away, my world contracting to the way Niall's lips move against mine. Because it's adoring and so very sure. This is a kiss with history behind it. And a future ahead. It makes my heart seize with happiness and my toes curl inside my shoes.
I love them being little shits together. Chapter 9 is gonna be so good, y'all. Dev and Niall in love with each other is the best. It's all there in my head; I've just gotta write it.
alright, take care of one another this week. love ya.

doing translation will unlock something in you because you’ll realise how there are dozens, hundreds even, of subtly different ways to translate things, and all of them are correct, and all of them are different by implication, and you can never choose the “right” one because there will always be something lost in translation, and the best you can do is strive to close that gap. anyway this is about my blog title because i saw a gifset where someone translated it differently than i would and it’s making me chew drywall.

you know what I can’t stop thinking about?how the world lets some labels matter and others get ignored. holocaust survivors, everyone knows that brand right? iconic emotional powerful makes you stop and go damn but here’s the kicker palestinians? we’re survivors too. nakba survivors. oh you thought the nakba was just some event from 1948? no no no hayati, it’s still happening right now every single day so this is the term people need to start using when talking about palestinians: NAKBA SURVIVORS. not refugees, not some sad footnote in history and can we please stop even calling what happening in Gaza “ethnic cleansing”? like what are we doing here, rebranding atrocities to sound like a spring cleaning checklist? no it’s ethnic extermination. say it with me ex-ter-mi-na-tion. and yet somehow palestinians keep surviving. my family in gaza? 26 are still there, after losing too many. they wake up every day to a world that wants them gone and somehow they’re still trying to survive. but survival isn’t magic. it doesn’t just happen because they’re tough or brave or insert your inspirational buzzword of choice here. it happens because people like you give a damn and yes this is me asking you to really keep giving a damn. have you donated yet? incredible, thank you, love you forever. haven’t donated? this is your sign. thinking “but i already donated”? Please do it again. survival isn’t a one-time event. click the link and be part of the reason they’re still alive tomorrow.

Silver Springs | (famous!harry x famous!reader)
Tumblr media
Summary: Falling for Harry Styles was never part of Y/N’s plan. As the daughter of Stevie Nicks, she’s spent her whole life running from the spotlight, carving out her own identity in the indie rock scene. But when fate keeps pulling her back into his orbit, resisting becomes impossible.
A slow-burn friends-to-lovers romance filled with stolen glances, whispered lyrics, and a love too big to keep secret forever. Featuring: a dramatic rain-soaked love confession, a very public grand gesture, and enough Fleetwood Mac references to make Stevie proud.
Because some love stories are meant to be legendary.
A/N: Okay, but why was this request everything I’ve ever wanted in a fic?? The slow burn?? The secret relationship angst?? The messy, desperate, I-can’t-breathe-without-you love confession?? And let’s not even talk about that post-confession smut scene because I need a moment. To the lovely soul who requested this, thank you for feeding my drama-loving heart. This was so much fun to write, and I definitely got way too emotionally attached. (Also, I need a rockstar AU in real life ASAP.) ALSO I’m sorry, I definitely overdid the scene dividers oops.
Word Count: 8,5k
Warnings:
Slow-burn tension that hurts (but in a good way)
Secret relationship chaos
One rain-soaked love confession
One hot, messy, emotional SMUT scene (18+)
Paparazzi stress & PR nightmares
A duet so romantic it might ruin your standards
Fleetwood Mac lyrics used as emotional warfare
☆ ★ ✮ ★ ☆
Y/N had been born with the weight of a legacy she never asked for.
From the moment she took her first breath, the world had already decided who she was. The daughter of Stevie Nicks. Rock royalty. A ghost of the past in a modern world. The media had never let her be anything else. They picked apart her features, searching for traces of her mother—the same high cheekbones, the same wild hair. They hunted for echoes of Fleetwood Mac in the songs she wrote, dissecting every lyric, every melody, desperate to find a connection. And when they couldn’t?
They made one up.
Her father’s identity had been a secret from the start, a mystery wrapped in whispered rumors and unanswered questions. Some tabloids swore he had been a rockstar, a fleeting love affair lost in the haze of the ‘70s. Others speculated he had been someone ordinary, someone her mother had chosen to protect from the chaos of her world. Y/N had stopped wondering a long time ago. Her mother had always said, "You don’t need to know where you come from to know where you’re going, baby." And maybe that was true. But sometimes, when she looked at herself in the mirror, she wished she knew which parts of her belonged to Stevie Nicks and which belonged to a stranger.
Still, despite the world’s obsession with her past, Y/N had built something of her own.
Her music was raw, poetic—a fusion of indie rock and dreamlike lyricism that belonged entirely to her. She wasn’t interested in stadiums or radio hits; she wanted songs that lingered in the bones, the kind that made people ache without knowing why.
And yet, no matter what she did, the headlines always found a way to reduce her to a footnote in her mother’s story.
"Stevie Nicks’ Daughter Haunts the Music Scene—Can She Ever Escape Her Mother’s Shadow?" "The Princess of Rock ‘n’ Roll: Y/N Nicks Inherits a Legacy of Magic and Tragedy."
She ignored them. Mostly.
But some nights, when the whiskey burned too much and the music wasn’t enough, she wondered if she’d ever just be herself.
The first time Y/N met Harry Styles, she was fifteen.
It was a warm summer night in Los Angeles, the kind where the air was thick with nostalgia, humming with the remnants of a golden era long gone.
Fleetwood Mac was playing at The Forum, and backstage was a haze of cigarette smoke, laughter, and the scent of aged leather. It was a world Y/N had always known, one that felt like home and yet never quite belonged to her.
She had been curled up on one of the velvet couches, her combat boots propped up on a glass table, flipping through an old notebook of half-written lyrics.
Her mother had walked in then, a force of nature even in her sixties, wrapped in flowing black fabric, rings glinting under the dim lights. And beside her—
Harry.
He had been twenty, freshly cut from the boyband machine but still unmistakably him. Messy curls, dimples carved deep into his cheeks, a floral button-up that hung loose over his chest. There was an ease to him, a confidence that most people his age hadn’t yet earned.
Stevie had smiled, her voice all warmth and amusement as she introduced them.
"Harry, this is my daughter, Y/N. Y/N, sweetheart, this is Harry Styles."
Y/N had barely spared him a glance, disinterested in the way only a fifteen-year-old girl could be.
She had looked him up and down, unimpressed, before muttering, "Oh. You’re the boy with the hair."
There had been a beat of silence. Then—
Harry had grinned, wide and unbothered. "And you’re the girl who hates the spotlight."
That had made her pause.
She had finally looked at him properly then, taking in the twinkle of mischief in his green eyes, the way he had spoken to her like he knew her, like he could already see the edges of her soul.
She had hated that.
So she had rolled her eyes, shutting her notebook with a snap. "Yeah? What gave it away?"
Harry had only chuckled. "Just a feeling."
They hadn’t known it then, but that moment—that first careless exchange in the glow of The Forum’s dressing rooms—had been the beginning of something that would follow them for years.
They had drifted in and out of each other’s lives after that, their paths crossing at industry events, in backstage corridors, in places where music and fame blurred the lines between strangers and something more.
But they had never been close.
Not yet.
That would come later.
And when it did, neither of them would be able to stop it.
Tumblr media
It was a city built on illusions, a place where the past and present blurred under neon lights and whiskey-soaked conversations. People changed here, or they lost themselves trying.
Y/N had spent years learning how to exist in the industry without letting it consume her. She had built walls, wrapped herself in the armor of cigarette smoke and sharp words, refusing to let the world shape her into something she wasn’t.
But some nights—nights like this—she felt the weight of it all pressing against her ribs.
She had been in the music industry long enough to know that these parties weren’t really about music. They were about power. Influence. The quiet, calculated dance of networking, where every glance and every handshake meant something.
Y/N hated it.
And yet, here she was.
The party was in the Hollywood Hills, tucked away in a mansion that reeked of old money and new fame. The kind of place where people got too drunk on tequila and promises they wouldn’t remember in the morning.
She had come because she had to—because being seen mattered, even when she wished it didn’t.
She was twenty-five now, no longer the sharp-tongued teenager who had met Harry Styles in the glow of The Forum’s dressing rooms.
She had grown into herself.
And so had he.
She saw him before he saw her.
Harry was in the center of the room, as he always was, laughter spilling from his lips as he leaned against a marble bar, his rings catching in the dim light.
He looked different now—older, surer, carved out of something stronger.
The curls were shorter, but still wild. The tattoos more visible, inked stories along his skin. He wore a suit, something sleek and expensive, but the top buttons of his shirt were undone, revealing a silver cross against his collarbones.
Even here, surrounded by actors and musicians and people who pretended they belonged, he was the only one who looked like he truly did.
Y/N had spent years pretending she was immune to the charm of men like him.
But as she stood there, watching the way he moved, the way people gravitated toward him, she felt something stir in her chest.
Something she didn’t want to name.
She turned away, heading toward the bar, but it was already too late.
She heard his voice before she felt his presence.
“Well, if it isn’t rock royalty.”
Y/N exhaled, bracing herself, before turning to face him.
Harry was smiling, that slow, lazy grin that had made girls weak in the knees for over a decade.
“Pop star,” she greeted, raising an eyebrow.
His dimples deepened. “Didn’t think this was your scene.”
Y/N shrugged, lifting her whiskey glass. “It isn’t.”
Harry’s gaze flickered over her, assessing. “Then why are you here?”
“Same reason you are,” she said, taking a slow sip. “To remind people we still exist.”
Harry chuckled, shaking his head. “You don’t have to remind anyone, love. They never forget a Nicks.”
There was something in the way he said it—something almost… knowing.
She tilted her head, watching him. “And they never forget a Styles.”
His smirk deepened. “Touché.”
The conversation between them felt effortless, the kind of back-and-forth that came with years of shared history, even if most of it had been from a distance.
She had always liked that about him.
That he could meet her wit for wit. That he never backed down.
That night, they danced around the past without ever acknowledging it, teasing each other between sips of whiskey and stolen glances.
He called her "rock princess" like it was a private joke.
She called him "pop star" with just enough mockery to make him laugh.
The undercurrent of something more was there—tangible, electric, waiting to be acknowledged.
But neither of them touched it.
Not yet.
Later, when the party had thinned and the air inside had grown heavy with heat and smoke, Y/N slipped outside.
She kicked off her heels, stepping onto the cool stone of the balcony, and lit a cigarette with steady fingers.
The view of the city stretched before her, a glittering sea of headlights and broken dreams.
She inhaled deeply, letting the nicotine settle in her lungs, humming a familiar melody under her breath—one of her mother’s, an old Fleetwood Mac song that had been stitched into her bones long before she was born.
She didn’t hear him approach.
Didn’t realize he was there until he spoke.
“Still hate the spotlight?”
His voice was softer now, missing the teasing edge from before.
She exhaled, watching the smoke curl into the night. “I hate what it does to people.”
Harry leaned against the railing beside her, silent for a moment, as if turning over her words in his head.
Then, he huffed a quiet laugh. “Still the girl who hates everything?”
Y/N smirked, side-eyeing him. “Still the boy with the hair?”
Harry grinned, running a hand through his curls. “I like to think there’s more to me than that.”
Something unspoken passed between them then.
A shift. A breath.
A moment on the edge of something inevitable.
Neither of them moved.
Neither of them said a word.
But in the silence, they both felt it.
A crack in the walls they had spent years building.
A spark that had always been there, waiting for the right time to catch fire.
Harry called her three weeks after the party.
It was late—too late for anything that wasn’t trouble.
She had been sprawled across her bed, an open notebook balanced on her stomach, trying to piece together a song that didn’t want to be written, when her phone buzzed against the nightstand.
She didn’t need to check the name.
There was only one person who would call her at this hour, as if he knew she’d still be awake.
She let the phone ring twice before answering. “You lost, pop star?”
Harry chuckled, his voice low and lazy. “Not lost, no. Just… thought of you.”
Y/N rolled onto her side, tucking the phone between her shoulder and ear. “Oh? Should I be flattered?”
“Dunno.” He paused. “Wanna come to the studio tomorrow?”
That made her sit up.
She knew Harry was working on a new album. The industry had been buzzing about it for months, but he had been careful—secretive, even—about who he let in.
And now, he was inviting her.
Y/N hesitated for only a second before saying, “What time?”
Tumblr media
She arrived at the studio the next evening, her guitar slung over her back, dressed in a well-worn Fleetwood Mac t-shirt just to mess with him.
Harry was already there, sitting on the edge of a couch with a notebook in his lap, his fingers tapping out a rhythm on the cover.
He looked up when she walked in, a slow smile spreading across his face. “Didn’t think you’d actually show.”
Y/N dropped onto the couch beside him, stretching out like she owned the place. “Didn’t think you actually had a studio. Thought you just wrote love songs in expensive hotel rooms.”
Harry chuckled, flipping the notebook shut. “Maybe I do both.”
The night unfolded in quiet moments and half-sung melodies.
She watched as he disappeared into the recording booth, slipping the headphones over his ears, eyes fluttering shut as the music took over.
And for the first time, she let herself really listen to him.
Harry had always been a good singer. That much was obvious. But there was something about watching him like this—seeing the way he poured himself into every lyric, the way his voice carried a rawness that no amount of polish could hide—that made her breath catch.
He was singing something new, something unfinished.
And as his voice curled around the notes, thick with longing and something unspoken, he looked up—straight at her.
Y/N’s grip tightened around her whiskey glass.
The booth’s glass separated them, but the way he stared at her—intense, knowing, like he could see straight through her—made her feel like there was nothing between them at all.
She swallowed hard, looking away first.
Harry smirked.
One studio session turned into two. Two turned into three.
And then, before she knew it, she was on a plane with him, tucked into first-class seats as his tour swept across the country.
She told herself she was just tagging along for inspiration, a creative escape.
She told herself it didn’t mean anything.
But the late nights in hotel rooms told a different story.
They fell into a rhythm—drinking whiskey on balconies, trading lyrics like secrets, letting conversations slip into the kind of honesty that only existed between two people who didn’t want to admit what they were to each other.
Some nights, they wrote.
Some nights, they just existed—stretched out on hotel carpets, hands brushing when they passed the bottle back and forth, staring at ceilings like they held the answers to questions neither of them wanted to ask.
She hadn’t expected this.
Hadn’t expected the way he looked at her when she wasn’t paying attention.
Hadn’t expected the way she wanted to memorize the shape of his laughter.
Hadn’t expected the way she craved him, in the quiet, in the spaces between words, in the way his voice curled around her name like it was something sacred.
One night, she fell asleep in his hotel room.
They had been listening to records, the vinyl crackling in the background, the bottle of whiskey between them half-empty.
She had kicked off her boots at some point, curling up on the couch, his hoodie draped over her shoulders like she belonged in it.
Harry had been mid-sentence when he noticed she wasn’t answering.
He turned, finding her tucked into the cushions, her breathing soft, her hair spilling across her face.
Something in his chest tightened.
He exhaled, rubbing a hand over his jaw, telling himself to let it go.
But he didn’t.
Instead, he leaned in, brushing her hair behind her ear, his fingers lingering a second too long.
She stirred slightly but didn’t wake.
And for the briefest moment, Harry let himself want it—let himself imagine what it would feel like to close the space between them, to taste the whiskey on her lips, to see if she’d kiss him back or push him away.
He hovered there, so close, so fucking close—
And then he pulled back.
Shoving a hand through his curls, he let out a quiet curse, grabbing the nearest blanket and draping it over her instead.
Not now, he told himself.
Not yet.
He sat back, forcing himself to look away.
But even in the dark, even in the silence, he knew.
He was already in too deep.
Tumblr media
London was cold, the kind of damp chill that clung to bones and made her wish she was still waking up in different hotel rooms, still stealing sips of his morning coffee, still pretending she didn’t care when he hummed her songs under his breath.
The withdrawal was annoying.
But not unexpected.
She had just finished scribbling notes for a new song when her phone rang.
“You still in town?”
She smirked, setting her pen down. “Didn’t know you missed me so much, pop star.”
Harry chuckled, that deep, lazy sound that made something twist in her stomach. “Not even denying it, are you?”
She rolled her eyes. “What do you want, Styles?”
“Dinner.”
That made her pause.
Sure, they had spent weeks living in each other’s pockets—whiskey-soaked late nights, studio sessions stretched into dawn, long looks across dimly lit dressing rooms—but this felt… different.
Intentional.
Like he was asking for something neither of them were ready to name.
Still, she played it cool. “Where?”
“I’ll text you.” A pause. “Wear something nice.”
She showed up to the restaurant in a leather jacket, ripped jeans, and her mother’s old silver rings.
Let him try and tell her what to wear.
Harry was already there, tucked into a quiet corner, a half-full glass of red wine in front of him. His curls were messier than usual, his sweater hanging loose on his frame, and the moment he saw her, his dimples deepened.
“Very fancy,” he teased, flicking the collar of her jacket as she slid into the seat across from him.
Y/N smirked. “If you wanted a date, you should’ve said so.”
Harry’s lips twitched. “Didn’t say I didn’t.”
The air shifted.
She ignored the way her pulse quickened, instead reaching for the menu. “So. What’s good here?”
They fell into easy conversation, talking about the tour, the highs and lows, the stupid inside jokes they’d collected along the way.
But somewhere between the laughter and the second glass of wine, the mood softened.
“Do you ever get tired of it?” she asked, twirling the stem of her glass between her fingers.
Harry tilted his head. “Of what?”
“Being… this.” She gestured vaguely at him, at the world outside the restaurant doors, at the weight of fame that followed them both. “The cameras, the expectations, the pressure. Do you ever just wanna disappear?”
Harry studied her, running his thumb along the rim of his glass.
“Sometimes,” he admitted. “But then I remember why I started. And it’s not about all the noise. It’s about the music. About…” He exhaled, shaking his head with a small smile. “About moments like this.”
Y/N felt her heart lurch before she could stop it.
She cleared her throat, forcing a smirk. “Sappy.”
Harry grinned, leaning back in his chair. “You love it.”
She did.
That was the problem.
They should have known better.
A quiet dinner in London? No such thing.
The next morning, the headlines were everywhere.
Harry Styles and Rock Royalty: A New Power Couple?
The Fleetwood Mac Connection—Is Y/N Following Her Mother’s Footsteps in Love, Too?
Spotted: Harry & Y/N, Cozy London Date Night or Just Old Friends?
Y/N groaned, tossing her phone onto the kitchen counter. “You’ve got to be kidding me.”
Harry’s name lit up her screen.
She answered without greeting. “Tell me this will blow over.”
Harry chuckled. “It’ll blow over.”
“You’re lying.”
“I am.” Another laugh. “We could deny it.”
“Obviously.”
“Or…”
Y/N narrowed her eyes. “Or?”
Harry’s grin was practically audible. “Could always lean into it.”
She snorted. “You wish, Styles.”
He hummed. “Yeah, maybe I do.”
Her stomach flipped.
Before she could respond, there was a knock on her door.
“Gotta go.” She hung up quickly, shaking off the warmth curling in her chest.
Then she opened the door.
And found her mother standing there, arms crossed, eyebrows raised.
Y/N barely had a chance to step aside before Stevie breezed past her, silk scarves trailing, the scent of patchouli and incense filling the space.
She made a beeline for the kitchen, plucked Y/N’s phone off the counter, and squinted at the headlines.
Y/N sighed. “Good morning to you, too.”
Stevie hummed, tapping a red-lacquered fingernail against the screen. “So… you and Harry Styles.”
Y/N groaned. “For fuck’s sake, it’s nothing.”
Stevie arched a delicate brow, taking a slow sip of her tea. “Sure, baby. Keep telling yourself that.”
Y/N scowled. “It’s not love.”
Stevie’s lips curled into a knowing smile.
“Love is messy in this business, honey.”
Y/N rolled her eyes, snatching her phone back. “I wouldn’t know.”
Stevie just laughed, something soft and far too smug in her gaze.
Because she knew.
Long before Y/N was willing to admit it to herself.
Tumblr media
She spotted him immediately.
Harry.
Leaning against the marble bar, whiskey in hand, dimples out in full force as he laughed at something Lizzo said. He looked too good, annoyingly good, all effortless charm and understated power in his black suit, his sheer shirt open just enough to tease golden skin and the sharp edge of his collarbone.
Y/N swallowed hard.
It had been weeks since the headlines. Since her mother’s knowing smile. Since she had convinced herself she wasn’t thinking about him like that.
But now, with the golden glow of the chandeliers casting shadows over his cheekbones, his green eyes flicking up to meet hers across the room—she felt it.
The pull. The inevitable, undeniable pull.
She found herself at his side before she could think better of it, sliding onto the barstool beside him.
Harry glanced at her, eyes flicking over her outfit—a silk slip dress in deep navy, barely-there straps, silver chains glinting against her collarbone. His throat bobbed as he swallowed, his fingers tightening around his whiskey glass.
Interesting.
Y/N smirked, plucking an olive from the garnish tray and popping it into her mouth. “Enjoying yourself, pop star?”
Harry exhaled a laugh, tilting his glass towards her. “Was just about to ask you the same thing, rock princess.”
She arched a brow. “You clean up well.”
He leaned in slightly, voice dropping. “So do you.”
Her breath hitched, but she masked it with a slow sip of her drink.
They fell into easy conversation, but the teasing was sharper tonight, laced with something dangerous. He was closer than usual, his knee brushing against hers, his fingers grazing the inside of her wrist when he reached for his drink.
And every time she laughed, his eyes flickered to her lips.
Sometime after midnight, when the party was loudest and the drinks were strongest, Y/N felt the walls closing in.
She had spent the last hour with his hand on the small of her back, his voice low in her ear, his eyes dark and unreadable whenever she so much as looked at someone else.
She couldn’t take it anymore.
So she grabbed his wrist.
“Come with me.”
Harry blinked, surprised, but let her lead him through the crowd, up a grand staircase, and through a side door that led to the rooftop.
The city stretched out below them, glittering in the darkness. The muffled bass of the party throbbed beneath their feet, but up here, the air was crisp, cool against flushed skin.
Harry ran a hand through his curls, exhaling. “Y’finally had enough of all that?”
Y/N scoffed. “I just needed to breathe.”
A beat of silence. Then—
“You think about it too, don’t you?”
Her stomach clenched.
She turned to him, arms crossed. “Think about what?”
Harry took a step closer. “This.”
Her heart hammered. “Harry—”
“I think about you too much,” he admitted, voice quiet but firm, like he had been holding it in for years.
The air crackled between them.
Y/N’s nails bit into her palms. Her voice was steady when she said, “Then do something about it.”
Harry moved before she could take it back.
His hand found her jaw, fingers tilting her face up to his. He hesitated for a fraction of a second, his breath fanning against her lips—giving her a chance to stop it, to pull away.
She didn’t.
So he kissed her.
Slow at first, teasing, like he wanted to savor the moment. His lips were soft but firm, tasting like whiskey and warmth, like something she hadn’t realized she had been starving for.
And when she kissed him back, something inside him snapped.
A groan rumbled in his throat as he deepened it, his other hand sliding around her waist, pulling her flush against him. The cold rooftop wall pressed against her back, his body against her front, caging her in.
She melted.
Her fingers tangled in his curls, tugging just enough to make him growl into her mouth. She felt his smirk against her lips before he kissed her harder, licking into her mouth like he wanted to learn every single inch of her.
The city blurred around them.
There was only this.
Only him.
Only the moment they had spent years pretending they didn’t want.
When they finally broke apart, Y/N was breathless, lips tingling, her hands still fisted in his hair.
Harry smirked, eyes dark and hazy.
“Was wondering when you’d let me do that.”
Y/N let out a breathless laugh, her fingers tracing his jaw.
“Shut up and do it again.”
And so he did.
Tumblr media
They didn’t talk about it, not really.
They just acted.
And once that line had been crossed, there was no going back.
The secrecy of it all was intoxicating.
It turned the smallest moments into something electric—her fingers grazing his when she passed him a drink, the press of his palm against her lower back as he guided her through a crowd.
They stole kisses behind dressing room doors, in dimly lit hallways, in the backseat of a blacked-out SUV. It was a game neither of them acknowledged but both played with fervor.
It was thrilling.
It was dangerous.
It was them.
Tumblr media
Harry had sent her nothing but a single text:
Room 1107. Door’s open.
So she went.
The moment she stepped inside, he was already reaching for her.
His hands were warm as they slid around her waist, pulling her in. His lips found hers before she could even make a remark about his audacity, and suddenly she was backed up against the wall, gasping softly into his mouth as his fingers gripped the hem of her hoodie—the one she had stolen from his suitcase weeks ago.
It smelled like him.
It felt like home.
“Missed you,” he muttered against her lips, his voice rough with exhaustion but laced with something softer, something sweeter.
She smirked, her fingers curling into his T-shirt. “You saw me three hours ago.”
Harry hummed, dragging his lips down the column of her throat. “Still too long.”
She rolled her eyes, but the shiver down her spine betrayed her.
Tumblr media
But sleep had other plans.
Y/N woke up tangled in crisp white sheets, her limbs a lazy sprawl across the mattress. The scent of Harry—cologne, whiskey, and something distinctly him—wrapped around her like a second skin.
And then—
A knock at the door.
Her eyes flew open.
Harry groaned into the pillow beside her. “Fuck’s sake.”
“Harry? You up?”
His assistant.
Shit.
Y/N scrambled upright, heart racing. She barely had time to throw on his hoodie before Harry was tugging her off the bed, dragging her toward the closet.
“Oh, you have to be kidding me,” she hissed.
He just grinned, pushing the door open. “Get in.”
“Harry—”
“In, love.”
She barely had time to flip him off before he shut the door behind her, sealing her in darkness.
Y/N pressed a hand over her mouth to keep from laughing, crouched between his suitcases, her bare legs chilled by the cool air inside.
She could hear everything.
The door creaking open.
Harry’s voice, rough from sleep. “Morning.”
The assistant’s knowing tone. “You sound like shit.”
A pause.
Y/N could feel the smirk in Harry’s response. “Yeah, well. Long night.”
Her glare could have burned through the door.
From the other side, she heard rustling—probably his assistant rifling through a bag.
Then—
“Oh, and by the way? If you’re gonna sneak someone in, maybe don’t leave two pairs of shoes by the door next time.”
Silence.
Y/N’s stomach dropped.
Harry, to his credit, barely missed a beat.
“Right. Yeah. Noted.”
The door shut a moment later.
She barely had time to breathe before the closet door swung open, revealing Harry’s smug, dimpled grin.
“Next time,” he murmured, offering his hand to pull her up, “you’re hiding under the bed.”
Y/N smacked his chest.
And then kissed him.
It was meant to be quick—just a press of lips in playful retaliation—but Harry wasn’t one to let a moment slip away. His fingers curled around her waist, holding her there, deepening the kiss. It was languid, familiar, the kind of kiss that tasted like late nights and secrets, like comfort and hunger all at once.
She sighed against his mouth. “I should go.”
“I know.”
Neither of them moved.
It was only when the morning light began creeping through the curtains, spilling over their tangled limbs, that she forced herself to untangle from him. Harry stayed in bed, arm draped over his forehead, watching as she slipped into her jeans and pulled on his hoodie—her own top lost somewhere in the haze of the night before.
His voice was hoarse from sleep. “At least let me get you a car.”
“I’ll call one,” she assured him, raking her fingers through her messy hair.
Harry sat up then, brows knitting together. “Y/N—”
“I’ll be fine,” she interrupted, flashing him a small smile. She pressed a last kiss to his cheek, inhaled the warmth of his skin, and slipped out of the room.
And right into a camera flash.
The second she stepped onto the pavement, she knew.
The street wasn’t exactly swarming, but one paparazzo was enough. He was already snapping rapid shots, the sound of the shutter slicing through the dawn stillness like a guillotine. She didn’t run—that would make it worse. Instead, she pulled up the hood of Harry’s sweatshirt, kept her chin down, and slid into the waiting car.
Her phone buzzed before she even reached her apartment.
Maddie: Shit. Have you seen TMZ??
Y/N’s stomach twisted. She hadn’t even shut the door behind her before she was pulling up the link.
The headline screamed at her in bold print:
Y/N Nicks Spotted Leaving Harry Styles’ Home—Rock Royalty & Pop Prince?
Her pulse pounded as she scrolled. Dozens of pictures. Some from last night when they arrived separately at his house. Some from this morning, catching her in the same outfit.
And then the comments.
Not surprised. The tension in that interview was insane. She’s not even that famous wtf. Fleetwood Mac and One Direction crossover??? Didn’t she date that bassist last year? She’s literally wearing his hoodie. IT’S HAPPENING. Harry can do better tbh.
Her fingers tightened around the phone.
She should have known.
By noon, it was everywhere. Entertainment news, gossip sites, even actual journalists weighing in on the implications of her and Harry. She ignored the notifications, silenced her phone, but then came the email from her publicist.
And worse—Harry’s PR team.
We need to get ahead of this. No comment is best for now. We’re drafting a statement.
It was bullshit.
By mid-afternoon, she was at his house.
Harry was pacing the living room, phone in one hand, stress written all over his face. He looked up when she walked in, exhaling heavily. “They want me to deny it.”
Y/N’s breath caught. “What?”
“They think—” He dragged a hand through his curls. “They think we can ride it out, wait for something else to distract them. If we say nothing, it dies faster.”
Something bitter lodged itself in her throat. “Say nothing? Or lie?”
He hesitated. And that was enough.
“You said we were in this together,” she said, voice sharp.
“We are,” he insisted. “But you know how this works, Y/N. It’s different for me. The fans.”
Her laugh was hollow. “Oh, the fans.”
“That’s not—” He sighed, shaking his head. “You know what I mean.”
“No, Harry. I don’t.” She crossed her arms. “Because last I checked, I’m in this industry too. I’ve had my entire existence scrutinized since birth. Do you think I don’t know what it’s like to have people picking apart my every move?”
His jaw clenched.
She pressed on. “But I’m not ashamed of you. And I sure as hell don’t want to pretend this isn’t real just because some PR team is scared of a few bad headlines.”
“I’m not ashamed of you,” he said, voice low.
“Then why are you acting like you are?”
Silence.
Her heart hammered.
Finally, she exhaled shakily, voice barely above a whisper. “I want us to stop hiding. Please.”
He didn’t say anything.
And maybe that was her answer.
Y/N swallowed the lump in her throat, nodded once, and turned for the door.
The quiet thud of the door closing behind her felt heavier than it should have.
It wasn’t dramatic—no slamming, no storming out. Just the quiet finality of leaving.
And yet, it echoed.
She didn’t cry in the car. Didn’t cry when she got home. Didn’t even cry when she scrolled through Twitter and saw her name still trending, the discourse evolving by the hour.
What does Harry see in her anyway? She’s just another nepotism baby. She’s so private—does she think she’s better than his other exes? She’s clearly using him for clout. She’s lucky to have him, but he deserves someone who actually appreciates him.
Her fingers hovered over the screen before she locked her phone and tossed it onto the couch.
Let them talk. Let them spin their stories. It wasn’t like the truth mattered.
She went silent.
No Instagram stories, no late-night tweets, no cryptic lyrics. The press called it a calculated move, the fans called it suspicious, but in reality?
She just didn’t have the energy.
She slept too little and drank too much coffee. She ignored calls from her publicist. Ignored texts from mutual friends who wanted to check in but were probably just fishing for an inside scoop.
And Harry?
Harry didn’t reach out.
Not once.
Which, of all the things, hurt the most.
Tumblr media
It had been three days.
She was at her mother’s house when it happened.
Stevie had always been able to tell when something was wrong, no matter how good Y/N thought she was at masking it. She hadn’t pried, though. Not yet. Instead, she let Y/N exist in the space, offering quiet company rather than questions.
But Y/N knew she wouldn’t escape forever.
That night, the house was quiet except for the hum of the wind outside. Stevie had gone to bed hours ago, leaving Y/N alone in the dimly lit living room, the grand piano standing in the corner like it was waiting for her.
She didn’t even realize she was walking toward it until her fingers brushed against the keys.
She sat down.
And she played.
It started as muscle memory, the chords slipping out in a familiar pattern, soft and haunting. The kind of song that lingered in the bones, that carried the weight of something unfinished.
"You could be my silver spring..."
The words came out quieter than she intended, but they were there.
"Blue-green colors flashing..."
Her voice wavered.
"I would be your only dream..."
Her fingers trembled over the keys, the melody filling the empty room.
"You will never be my lover..."
The tears slipped down her cheeks before she could stop them.
God.
She hadn’t cried. Not when the pictures leaked, not when the headlines turned ugly, not even when she walked away.
But here, under the weight of this song—her mother’s song—she broke.
She barely heard the footsteps approaching behind her.
But she felt the presence.
A hand, warm and familiar, rested gently on her shoulder.
She didn’t flinch. Didn’t stop playing.
Stevie sat down beside her on the bench, saying nothing.
She just listened.
And when Y/N’s hands finally fell away from the keys, when her head dropped forward and her shoulders shook with silent sobs, her mother reached out and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.
"Oh, baby," she murmured softly.
And that was all it took for Y/N to shatter completely.
She turned into her mother’s arms, hiding her face against her shoulder as the heartbreak spilled out in ways she hadn’t allowed before.
Stevie just held her.
She didn’t say I told you so, didn’t say you knew this would happen, didn’t say I warned you, love is messy in this business.
She just let her cry.
Because what was there to say?
Y/N had been willing to fight for this. She had been willing to face the noise, the scrutiny, the world dissecting her every move—for him.
And he hadn’t even reached for her when she walked away.
She had loved him. Had let herself believe, even just for a moment, that they could exist beyond the secrets, beyond the fear.
But maybe she had been wrong.
Maybe he was never hers to begin with.
Meanwhile...
Harry hadn’t slept.
He had spent the last three days running on autopilot, going through the motions of studio sessions and meetings, pretending like everything was fine when it wasn’t.
He had tried to tell himself that this was the right move. That letting the story die on its own was the best way to protect them both.
But nothing about this felt right.
He had checked his phone a hundred times, fingers hovering over her contact, but he never typed anything. What could he say? Sorry I didn’t fight for us? Sorry I let the fear win?
He wasn’t sure what finally pushed him over the edge. Maybe it was the lack of her name in his messages, the absence of her voice. Maybe it was the fact that he had spent years wanting her and only had days before she slipped away completely.
Or maybe it was the video.
It wasn’t even a full clip, just a fifteen-second snippet someone had posted online.
Y/N, at a piano. Playing Silver Springs.
It was grainy, the lighting dim, but he knew her silhouette anywhere.
And he knew what that song meant.
His stomach dropped.
Because suddenly, it wasn’t just the weight of the media or the PR teams or the fans that mattered.
It was her.
It had always been her.
And if he didn’t move now, if he didn’t do something, he was going to lose her for good.
Tumblr media
The rain was relentless.
It hit the pavement in steady sheets, washing the city in silver streaks and the glow of streetlights. It soaked through Harry’s clothes, plastering his shirt to his skin, curling his hair against his forehead, dripping down his jaw like the storm itself was trying to pull him under.
But he didn’t care.
His heart was hammering, his chest tight with something wild and desperate as he stood in front of her door, fist poised to knock.
This was it.
No more hiding. No more silence. No more pretending like he could live without her.
His knuckles hit the wood. Once. Twice.
Nothing.
He swallowed hard, knocking again, harder this time, rainwater slipping down his wrist.
Still nothing.
His stomach clenched. What if she wasn’t here? What if she didn’t want to be here—what if she had already left, had already moved on—
The door swung open.
And there she was.
She stood barefoot in the doorway, an oversized sweatshirt hanging off one shoulder, her hair damp, like she’d just stepped out of the shower.
She hadn’t been expecting him. That much was obvious.
Her eyes widened, lips parting slightly as she took him in—the way his shirt clung to his chest, the way water dripped from his curls, the way his breath came ragged and uneven.
For a second, neither of them spoke.
Then—
“Fuck the PR,” he blurted, voice raw. “Fuck the headlines.”
She blinked.
“I love you.”
The words hit the air like a lightning strike, sharp and electric.
A breath. A pause. A crack in the silence.
The rain hadn’t let up.
It streaked down the windowpanes, tapping a steady rhythm against the glass, pooling in the crevices of the street outside. The air smelled like wet pavement and something electric, something on the verge of breaking.
He stood there in her doorway, dripping onto the hardwood floors, soaked to the bone. His shirt clung to him, darkened by the rain, molded to the sharp lines of his chest and the ridges of his stomach. Water curled at his jaw, trailing down the hollow of his throat. His breaths were heavy, ragged, like he’d run here in the downpour, like nothing in the world had mattered more than making it to this moment.
And she—
She just stared.
Chest rising and falling, lips slightly parted, fingers trembling at her sides.
Silence stretched between them, thick and weighted, every unspoken word, every unshed tear, every almost hanging in the space between their bodies.
Her fingers fisted in the damp collar of his shirt.
She yanked him inside.
The door slammed behind them, but neither of them noticed.
His back hit the wood, a sharp inhale punched from his lungs as she pressed against him. Their bodies were a tangle of heat and desperation, a collision of limbs and longing, the storm outside nothing compared to the one building between them.
Her hands slid up, skimming over his shoulders, gripping the nape of his neck, pulling.
Their mouths crashed together.
It was rough. Messy. Clumsy in the way only something utterly inevitable could be.
Her nails scraped against his scalp, and he groaned into her mouth, his fingers threading into her damp hair, tugging just enough to tip her head back. His lips slanted over hers, deepening the kiss, tasting her like he was starved for it.
She gasped when his mouth trailed lower, down the curve of her jaw, the column of her throat. He bit down, just enough to leave a mark, just enough to make her shudder against him.
Her hands fumbled at the buttons of his shirt, but the fabric was stuck to him, refusing to give. Frustration twisted her features.
“Off,” she demanded, voice breathless, thick with need.
He barely pulled back long enough to shove the wet fabric off his shoulders, letting it drop to the floor with a damp slap.
She pressed her palms against his bare chest, feeling the warmth of his skin, the erratic beat of his heart beneath her touch.
Then, she leaned in, running her tongue over the rain-slicked skin at his throat.
His whole body tensed.
“Jesus Christ,” he rasped.
Losing Control
They didn’t make it far.
They stumbled through the flat, hands desperate, mouths never parting, breathing each other in like oxygen.
Her sweatshirt was the next casualty, pulled up and over her head, landing somewhere behind them. His hands were on her skin instantly, fingers tracing the delicate lines of her spine, dragging down, down—gripping the back of her thighs and hoisting her up.
She gasped against his lips, legs wrapping around his waist.
He walked them backward, moving blindly, guided only by instinct and the sound of her breathing, the little whimpers she made when he kissed the hollow of her throat, the way her hips shifted against him.
They hit the couch.
She was weightless for a moment, air rushing from her lungs as he dropped her onto the cushions, hovering above her, chest heaving.
His hands spread over her bare thighs, sliding up, up, until his fingers hooked into the waistband of her shorts. He glanced up, meeting her gaze.
“I’ve wanted you since that first night,” he murmured, voice rough, wrecked.
Her breath caught.
A single heartbeat. A moment suspended in time.
Then she was tugging him down, capturing his mouth with hers.
Heat.
That was all she could feel.
The press of his body, the weight of him between her thighs, the scratch of his stubble against her skin as he kissed a path down her stomach.
Her nails raked down his back, catching at the waistband of his jeans, tugging. He groaned, the sound vibrating against her skin, his grip tightening on her hips as he pushed himself lower.
His lips ghosted over her navel, down further, until—
Her back arched, a sharp inhale punched from her lungs, a curse whispered into the air.
And then everything blurred.
A tangle of limbs, clothes stripped away piece by piece, moans swallowed in kisses, bodies moving together, frantic, unrestrained, the storm raging both outside and between them.
He pressed inside her with a shuddering breath, forehead dropping against hers, their hands gripping, clutching, desperate.
“Look at me,” he murmured, voice hoarse, raw with something deeper than lust.
She did.
And in that moment, it wasn’t just sex.
It was everything.
They collapsed against each other, breathless, bodies tangled.
Her cheek rested against his chest, his fingers tracing lazy circles over her bare spine.
The rain pattered softly against the window, but all she could hear was the steady rhythm of his heartbeat.
For a long moment, neither of them spoke.
Then, quietly—
“You didn’t stop me from walking away.”
He exhaled, his lips brushing over her temple. “I wanted to.”
She glanced up at him. “Then why didn’t you?”
His throat bobbed. “Because you deserved more than that.”
Her heart ached.
She shifted, fingers trailing over his jaw, over the curve of his mouth. “And now?”
His hand tightened on her waist.
“I’m done running.”
She stared at him for a beat.
Then, slowly, she smiled.
And when she kissed him, soft and lingering, he knew—
So was she.
The world could burn. The headlines could scream. The fans could theorize. The PR teams could scramble.
None of it mattered anymore.
Because they were done hiding.
They chose the timing.
They chose the words.
They chose each other.
The cameras were set up in a cozy, softly lit studio, with plush chairs and warm lighting that made everything feel a little less staged, a little more intimate. She sat beside him, their hands resting on the space between them—not quite touching, but close.
The interviewer, an older woman with kind eyes, smiled at them both.
“So,” she began, “I think it’s safe to say the world has been dying to know. What’s the truth?”
Harry exhaled a soft laugh, shaking his head. He glanced at Y/N, his dimples peeking out as he grinned, then looked back at the camera.
“The truth?” he repeated, voice playful, teasing.
She nudged him, a silent Behave.
He ignored it.
“Yeah,” he said, shrugging like it was the easiest thing in the world. “I’m in love with her. Always have been.”
The interviewer made a sound of delight. The world outside exploded.
She turned to Y/N, who was smiling so wide her cheeks ached.
“And you?” the interviewer asked gently.
Y/N looked at Harry.
He was already looking at her.
“I’m in love with him too,” she murmured. “Obviously.”
Tumblr media
The arena was packed.
The energy in the air was electric, a chorus of cheers and music and flashing lights. The setlist was nearly done, the concert winding toward its final moments. But before the last song, Harry paused.
“Alright,” he murmured into the mic, stepping back from the center of the stage. “I’ve got something special for you all tonight.”
The crowd roared.
His eyes found her, standing just offstage, watching him with an amused smile.
And then—he extended his hand.
She hesitated.
Not because she didn’t want to. But because, for the first time, this wasn’t just between them. This was in front of thousands.
He must have seen it in her eyes, because he smiled—soft, reassuring, knowing. He wiggled his fingers, beckoning her.
“C’mon, love,” he said. “Duet?”
The audience screamed.
She laughed, shaking her head. “You’re ridiculous,” she mouthed.
But she took his hand.
The moment she stepped onto the stage, the noise doubled, an eruption of cheers and chants and camera flashes.
But none of it mattered.
Not when he was looking at her like that.
The first chords of the song played, slow and sweet, the melody wrapping around them like something sacred.
And then—
He lifted her hand, pressing a kiss to her knuckles.
Soft.
Lingering.
Devoted.
The crowd melted.
But in that moment, as the lights bathed them in gold, as their voices wove together, as their fingers stayed entwined—
It wasn’t about the world watching.
It was about them.
Because for once, it didn’t matter who was looking.
They had each other.

hii first of all luv the username cause as a libra rising, samedt ;-; i'd like to make a request for a luke x f!reader fic pls!! um, so they're best friends, and luke decides to confess to r by giving her gifts, letters, trinkets, etc. with hints about his identity, but she doesn't know who they're from. so she asks for luke's help to find out about the identity of her secret admirer. but what if there's like a mistaken identity and she thinks it's someone from the hermes cabin (maybe chris? or one of the stoll brothers idk) and luke's just all pouty but nonchalant or something, but deep down he's like 'how do i even make her see' or something (while also second guessing that maybe he shouldn't confess it's him) like fluff with tiny angst :>
Message in a Bottle
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pairing: Luke Castellan x Reader
Summary: You got a secret admirer and recruited Luke to help you find out who they are...ignoring the most obvious option (Fluff, angst, best friends to lovers, happy ending)
Note: I'm so sorry for the six month hiatus. It wasn't by choice, I swear 😭. So many bad things kept happening that prevented me from writing (is this the writers curse people kept talking about?). Also, the request wanted only a sprinkle of angst, but I kinda got out of hand with it I think 😭 (sorry).
Word count: 4.4k (whoops)
You’ve always thought that too much of something is bad. Yet, ever since the day your life intertwined with Luke Castellan’s, you weren’t very sure about that anymore.
The two of you arrived at camp around the same time, entering a friendship that felt like hitting the jackpot. Your early days together were something that you both treasured dearly. Every time you thought a certain time period would someday be reminisced as the golden days of your friendships, new things would come, and top it off.
However, golden skies were soon evaded by clouds of pink hues. You found yourself noticing and appreciating small details you haven’t noticed before about your best friend. Initially, you acknowledged the growing feeling but decided that they better remain as footnotes in chapters of your life. However, fate’s design was different to your plans, because two years later, here you were: you looked at him almost in the same way a fool would look at the world with rose-colored glasses (but then again, maybe it was because you have learned to embrace and adore his flaws).
“Luke!”
The Hermes cabin counselor snapped his head towards the sound of your voice, eyes straying from his duty of the hour. A smile began forming on his face as you came to view, almost like he has always been programmed to do so. There was a certain spring in your steps. Moments like these made Luke feel like he was a minimalist because your happiness was somehow enough to guarantee his own.
You situated yourself next to Luke on the ground, not minding the dirt.
“Hey now, I’m meant to be watching these kids train, don’t come over and distract me,” the Hermes cabin counselor warned, though he didn’t move his eyes away from you. He simply couldn’t.
Everything about you served as a distraction to him. From the soft smirk gracing your lips to the innocent tilting of your head. Every little detail about you was captivating and was equally capable of drawing his attention away from wherever it was meant to be.
In fact, his attention issue around you was getting rather shameless because his friends have begun picking up on it and started teasing him for it. Personally, Luke doesn’t think it was his fault. His eyes just happen to draw to you in every room like second nature, while his mind short-circuited every time you were near.
Maybe, and just maybe being rational and able to function properly has stopped being his forte…at least whenever you were around.
Your eyes moved to the group of kids that were only going to be at camp for the summer. From the looks of it, Luke has just assigned them to practice sword fighting in pairs. You then glanced back at your best friend, discreetly drinking in the sight of him.
No doubt he did his fair share of demonstration before letting these kids go off on their own, because right now, his face was slightly flushed, veins evident on his forearm while the familiar orange shirt clung onto his body with glistening sweat.
You shook away the non-platonic thoughts and teased him, “Oh, come on, you wouldn’t pass up on talking to me. You adore me too much.”
Damn right, he does. Luke could feel his cheeks heat up again.
“Fine. What are you here for, firecracker?”
“I got another gift,” you informed, presenting the bracelet in your hand.
For the past month, you have been receiving small letters and gifts. This time it was a handmade bracelet with beads of your favorite colors, as well as charms that represented some of your hobbies and favorite things. It was clear that your anonymous admirer had put a lot of thought into such a small item. However, as always, there were no identities attached to it, leaving you clueless about the person behind these gestures.
Luke took your hand in his, eying the accessory that perfectly fitted your wrist. He started toying with the beads around your wrist that were shining in your favorite color.
The boy’s gaze flicked from the object to you, catching your soft and warm look. Gods, if you kept looking at him like that, he might just actually stop thinking logically. He could practically feel a confession lingering behind his lips, threatening to spew the second his ropes of restraint died.
“Anyway, I came here with an idea,” you broke the silence. “What if I try to find out who this person is? I mean, some of these gifts are quite specific. They seem to know my favorite color, flowers, and things I like. Surely, it wouldn’t be that hard to narrow it down and figure it out?”
Something shifted in your best friend’s behavior and you could feel it. There was a slight flustering look on Luke’s face as he avoided eye contact with you. It was rather strange to see the Hermes cabin counselor so fidgety. Luke has always been confident and composed, and you’d often be the one to humble down his playful cocky remarks. Half-way through looking at his behavior, you began speaking:
“You…”
Luke could feel the blood draining from his face at your facial expression, his face paling despite how flushed he was seconds ago from demonstrating sword fighting. The boy tried to regain his composure, though his attempt at seeming nonchalant failed as you touched his arm. Did you—
“You can be my inside man, talk to these guys to see if they’d slip up or something like that.”
“I don’t think that’s a very good idea,” Luke hastily replied, clearing his throat.
“Oh, I’m sorry. Did that come across as a suggestion? I hate to break it to you but being best friends means you sorta have to participate in my schemes,” your lips curled as Luke grunted at your words.
“Yeah, but—”
“Luke, please…it’ll be fun,” he almost scoffed at your words and unconvincing argument. Clearly, the two of you had different definitions of fun. Just as he opened his mouth to reject your idea again, his eyes caught yours. You were looking at him in such an eager and heart-warming gaze that it made him forget what he was intending to say.
Ah, there was no denying anymore. Being rational and able to function properly has truly stopped being his forte.
“Fine,” Luke uttered, the word pricking his tongue as regret started kicking in as he accepted being your accomplice. This decision could only come back to bite him in the ass. He watched as you quickly celebrated his lack of restraint.
“Ah, you gave in quite quickly,” you jabbed.
“Shut up.”
Oh, you were going to be the death of him.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Two days have passed since you got Luke to agree to help you find your secret admirer. Though, the boy must say, the last forty eight hours have been slightly comedic for him, watching you trying to track down your secret admirer…
While the real sender of those gifts was right beside you, nodding along to your every word.
Luke’s mind trailed to the origin of this “secret admirer” idea. He started it as a way to abate the urge of straight-up blurting out how love-struck he was with his own best friend, while also testing out the waters before finally confessing his feelings for you.
Though it was slightly amusing how the idea led him to where he was right at that moment. The Hermes cabin counselor zoned out as he pretended to speak to another boy you thought was behind those sweet gifts and letters.
Luke used to have those feelings under rein, but self-repression only caused it to grow exponentially. Initially, the Hermes cabin counselor dismissed those beyond friendly thoughts, thinking they would eventually fizzle away. However, against his predictions, this fondness towards you became a sort of companion to him for three long years.
Not only that, years of excessively burying these feelings six feet underground also came back to bite him in the ass because instead of having his feelings under control, they now have the upper hand.
Sometimes he felt like a puppet, while his feelings plucked the strings. His facial expressions were forever cursed to be sculpted in raw yearning whenever around you, having no choice over how he reacts to everything related to you.
But it didn’t matter, because he was going to finally confess soon.
Luke almost burst out laughing at the way you were standing in anticipation, waiting for his intel on the most recent candidate. It was entertaining, to say the least, pretending to engage in investigative conversation before heading back to you, shaking his head in feigned disappointment.
However, it didn’t take long before the Hermes cabin counselor started feeling sour.
Just as he made it back to your side, he watched as you started talking again, already discussing the next guy you thought might have done these things that Luke himself came up with. He eyed your in sync footsteps with a heavy heart. Despite the matching movement, he somehow still felt eternally behind. Luke was so close, yet so far away, and never quite able to grasp onto your ever moving attention.
Did you not consider him as an option at all? Did you truly not see him as anything other than a good friend? It started stinging him knowing you were considering all these other guys as potential candidates — the faces that now haunt him in his sleep, poisoning his mind with an acidic jealousy that was eating away his common senses and fueling immoral thoughts.
Soon enough, that same jealousy seared his mind with this overwhelming self-doubt. Luke’s foot started feeling cold at the thought of confessing. Gods, he never thought the same security behind anonymity would now make him feel desperate to be seen by you.
“Maybe I should give up,” you concluded, mindlessly staring ahead. Your attention elsewhere gave Clarisse and Chris an opportunity to send each other knowing looks. The two have been watching you run around in circles on a goose hunt, not knowing to look right behind at the sulking figure that was trailing after you.
Your distracted state also meant you didn’t notice the moping human situated beside you. However, hearing your declaration of ending your chase, Luke saw a window of opportunity. Maybe now was finally the time to be truthful. After all, if he doesn’t tell you, then how will you know and see him? Luke’s momentary motivation carried him through waves of dejection.
“Y/N, I need to tell you something,” Luke blurted out without much more thought or preparation, and his tone made you fully turn to him. Just as words finally formed and the boy opened his mouth to tell you—
“Hey Y/N, can I talk to you privately?” Somebody interrupted. Your eyes didn’t leave Luke immediately, but when you saw your best friend’s momentum had faltered, you turned to the stranger. It was another Hermes boy, somebody who you’ve seen around. You politely agreed and left with him.
“So, I heard you’ve been looking for the person who’s been giving you anonymous gifts. And well, it’s your lucky day, 'cause…” the boy stared you up and down while you subconsciously took a small step back when he leaned forward. “...I’ve decided to come forward and reveal myself.”
“Okay…well, prove it” you squinted. Though your skepticism didn’t make the Hermes boy in front of you falter. Clearly, he expected this.
“The first thing you were given was a note, and…the two most recent gifts were a cassette tape and a bracelet — which was made from beads of your favorite color and charms like…” you zoned out as the boy started listing out some of your favorite activities that were indeed the charms on your bracelet. You fiddled with the bracelet that you had purposefully hidden out of his view right behind your back.
There was a pinch in your heart that signaled the last bit of hope dying.
Oh…so Luke really wasn’t your secret admirer.
You internally scoffed at yourself. You should have known right after he said yes to helping you out with finding your secret admirer — which was originally an idea used as bait to determine if Luke was the sender or not, because if it was really him then he wouldn’t have agreed to help you out with this. However, not only did your best friend agree without much convincing from you, but he had seemed so nonchalant and unaffected as you named all these boys you wanted him to talk to.
Perhaps this secret admirer thing was something good. Somebody has shown interest and their actions have been nothing but sweet. Those letters contained words that were eternally bound to your memories, even altering the way you view yourself for the better. Maybe you could get to know this person and move on from hopelessly crushing on your best friend.
Halfway through, you realize you were so engulfed in your thoughts that you have zoned out to half of the things the Hermes boy was saying, and merely caught onto the last bit of his speech:
“...thinking maybe we could go on a date and get to know each other more tonight?”
Your stomach churned again, yet you nodded your head.
Move on. Move on. Move on. Move on.
Your friends gave you questioning looks when you got back to where they were, clearly curious about what you were pulled away for.
“So…that was my secret admirer, and I’m going on a date with him tonight,” you hoped you sounded more enthusiastic than you were feeling. You tried convincing yourself at least it was good knowing definitely how your best friend actually felt about you. Quickly sitting down, you kept your eyes on Clarisse, knowing if you even looked over at Luke, he’d be able to tell straight away that something was wrong.
Your lack of focus also meant you didn’t think much of the quiet murmur from your best friend: “Sorry, I just remember I need to do something.”
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
You looked at yourself in the mirror one last time. It was now the afternoon and you just finished getting ready for your date. As you were leaving, you spotted a note at the foot of your cabin. Seeing your name written on the paper, you picked it up while eying it peculiarly.
“You could be the one that I love,
I could be the one that you dream of,
Message in a bottle is all I can do,
Standing here hoping it gets to you.”
Your gut feeling stirred, hitting you with waves of higher certainty over suspicions you have previously had and denied.
Those lyrics were directly associated with a memory from summer two years ago.
Luke and you were sitting by the campfire when he asked what your favorite song was. You told him the name and mentioned you hadn’t listened to it in a while because using technology devices with signals were dangerous for Demigods. The conversation slipped your mind but clearly loitered in your best friend’s mind, because two months later while on your way back to camp from your quest together, he gifted you a tape player along with a cassette of said song along with others that you liked.
You blinked away the image of you leaning on Luke’s shoulder while the two of you listened to the song together on the train back to camp.
You re-read the note again while shaking your head. Perhaps it was a coincidence. Perhaps, that Hermes boy knew the song and it was also one of his favorites. Perhaps—
Your hand started trembling around the paper. Your eyes landed on one small detail in the note: a particular handwriting choice. The rest of it matched with previous notes, but there was one singular scribbling feature you’ve never seen used before.
Everything came crashing down and your internal eternal cycle of excuses and denial shattered.
You ran. It didn’t matter that it was raining and your attire was getting soaked. It didn’t matter at all because you were frustrated and confused. In other instances, you would have been elated at the possibility of mutual affection, but in that moment, exasperation blinded you from sensibility.
If what you have concluded was true, then why on Earth would he allow you to go on a date with a person who stole credit for things they didn’t do? This whole time, he made you feel like a fool — for waiting that long and having hope after all that time; for asking the person you were looking for to hunt them down with you; for sulking despite having what you thought was a good opportunity to come along; for borderline going on a date with an imposter; and for not seeing it all along that it was him.
“It’s you, isn’t it?” you called out.
Despite the rain, you could see your best friend’s figure stiffened before turning around to face you. The boy stood with his hands behind his back, not yet daring to look at you.
“The “th”. You connected the cross in the ‘t’ directly to the ‘h’,” you presented the note in your hand, pointing specifically at the slip up that Luke had made in the latest note, not caring of the raindrops that were hitting the paper. “It’s how I write it, and you started writing it the same way a year after we got to know each other because you liked the way it looked,” you pressed further.
The expression on Luke’s face painted your theory into the truth of the situation. You felt your hand slightly shaking at the revelation.
“Why? You left anonymous gifts and notes and watched me put on this hunt — which by the way, was for you. And didn’t even say anything when a guy lied and said he was my secret admirer? Is this one big cruel prank?”
“No—”
“Oh! Well then, surely at one point in this whole thing, you felt like you should just tell me?”
“I was going to.”
“Then where were you when I was just about to head out with that fraud? Maybe if you really liked me and really cared for me, like all those damn notes say, you would have fought for m—”
“I did,” Luke finally raised his voice, his face briefly hardened in an attempt to convey his desperation. His chest heaved, and the way it did almost made you think the anger radiating off every inch of his skin right then was directed towards you. But it wasn’t, and he knew you knew.
“I confronted him right after he claimed that he was the one who gave you all those things.”
Invisible ivies rooted your foot to the ground. You gulped, trying to digest the information you were given. However, it finally sunk in when Luke’s hands appeared from behind his back. It was then that you could see the bandage wrapped around his knuckles. Your breath hiccuped in both flattery and worry at the implication of what he had done. The darkness behind those deep hazel-brown orbs reflected a certain side of your best friend that you hadn’t seen before. Although, part of you felt like you wouldn’t mind it.
It made Luke’s blood boil knowing what he dedicated to you from the bottom of his heart was spoiled by ill intentions. Luke should have known better than to carelessly write all the letters and craft those gifts right on his bunk bed, rather than discreetly.
Once again, the Hermes cabin counselor was pulled back to memories from an hour ago. The way the other boy shot remarks at Luke’s lack of precautions, boasting his wrong-doings like someone incapable of having a guilty conscience. Luke's jaw tightened as the image of the sly smirk on the other Hermes boy's face flashed in his mind, but a wave of satisfaction ran through him as he recalled how quickly that smirk was wiped away by his own fist.
They might be brothers by a fraction, but blood or not, that boy was dead to Luke the second he tried tricking you.
“And no, I wouldn’t have let you go out with a fraudster. Never,” Luke’s eyes softened. “And in case it’s not implied enough: I like you…a lot. I was going to confess but then this guy came along lying,” Luke could feel that tremor returning once more to his fist. He hated that something he built, from scratch, on the foundation of sincerity was momentarily tainted by the hands of a spineless liar. Not only that, he hated witnessing somebody so dear to him getting deceived in such a tasteless manner.
“I also…didn’t want to get hurt. It was starting to seem like you would ever consider me as more than just a friend with the way you were listing out all these other guys. So for a bit there I was considering just keeping quiet…forever” he confessed, eyes now straying away from you and down to his shoes.
You observed your best friend through a new perspective. So your initial suspicions were true. You had thought it was him because all the things you have received hinted to somebody who knew you so well, and who else at camp but Luke knew this many things about you. But ultimately, another part of you — the proclaimed “logical” side — has hyper-analyzed every split second you two have shared and deemed that Luke has not given any true signs of interest in you beyond as a friend. Thus, you dismissed the thought of Luke being your secret admirer.
You know now to trust your gut feelings more.
“Oh, Luke Castellan, you dumb ass…” you spoke softly underneath your breath, but you knew he heard you perfectly clearly from the way he slightly peered up. Your heart almost shattered at the dejected look on your best friend’s face and the thought of him burying his feelings eternally. You sure as hell would not allow that to be this timeline.
“I’ve liked you ever since the day you went out of your way and gave me that first cassette tape,” the marveled look on Luke’s face over your confession made you continue, “I guess I should have known it was you…cause gift giving has always been your love language.” It seemed like the boy was too stunned and struck frozen. However, his shell-shock state didn’t last long, because soon, your best friend’s gaze reverted back to the way he has always looked at you, only slightly more intense.
Your eyes fluttered at the sight of Luke Castellan in front of you at that moment. You were finally able to see the effect you’ve always had on him. The way his lips hung slightly agape, eyes dilated in such a way you were no longer able to see their usual color anymore, chest slightly heaving despite lack of physical reasons for such a reaction. You almost wanted to hit yourself for being such a fool and not spotting these details sooner.
“Now, Castellan…you have two options,” you stepped closer to him, leaving an appropriate amount of personal space in between. “You either kiss me or—”
Luke grabbed your wrist with his uninjured hand and pulled you in. The same hand-guided your arms around his neck while also effectively eliminating the remaining distance between you two.
Without hesitation, he kissed you.
Likewise, you returned the action without a second thought. You frankly didn’t care about the rain that was soaking the both of you. Kissing Luke felt like such a natural act that it felt simply like diving home. The way he held you made you feel like you were a national treasure he was so afraid of losing. Gods, you don’t think you mind doing this ever so often.
Though, there was a certain urgency in the way Luke kissed you, as if afraid you’d either vanish or you’d change your mind. You pressed your lips harder against his, hoping he’d understand you didn’t intend on leaving or having a change of heart.
A grunt escaped his throat as you kissed him harder. Oh, Luke Castellan already knew he was in immense trouble. He knew almost immediately that the concerning number of thoughts he had about you each day would only increase tenfold from this day on. He wondered if you could taste all of his unspoken words. If kissing you felt like this, he might as well sign away his heart, body, and mind to you. In fact, he’d sign anything you put in front of him without even considering the fine prints.
Luke slowly backed you against a tree, giving you a bit of support to lean against whilst shielding the both of you from the heavy rain. He smiled into the kiss as you hummed at his action, feeling it echo against his lips. His heart tugged, almost leaping out of his chest when your hands made their way to both sides of his face, cupping it intently like holding something yours. Yours. Fuck, he loved the sound of that.
You were the first to break the kiss. The both of you gasped for air while maintaining eye contact. The close-up view of his intense gaze drove your cheeks rosy. You could not help but admire the way his locks of wet curly hair clung onto his forehead, while raindrops fell from his face, some following the length of his eyelashes before falling — Oh, the way he glanced down at your lips at that second made you feel almost like you had the power to convince him into anything at the moment.
“You’re my best friend…” he broke the silence.
“Mhm.”
“...but what if I want you to be more than that?”
“I can be both,” Luke’s lips broke out into a smile, and you mirrored his facial expression. He leaned his forehead against yours whilst softly rubbing his thumb soothingly against your waist.
“I’m not against that.”
As a larger grin broke out on your lips, Luke’s eyes further softened. He realized right there and then that anything you wanted, he would not be against it. A breath of relief quietly escaped beneath Luke’s breath. He could not wait for whatever was in store for the both of you in the future.
Good thing his messages in a bottle did get to you.

Tumblr media
In an effort to get people to look into each other’s eyes more, and also to appease the mutes, the government has decided to allot each person exactly 167 words per day.
This is why Minghao no longer wants to dream.
Dreams are a trap, a reason to talk in his sleep. Dreams take his words, unbidden and unwarranted, and he’ll wake up with four or seven less than he might have wanted. It annoys him to no end.
And so a good sleep is when he doesn’t dream. When he’s just taken from one day to the other in the blink of an eye. A good day is when he wakes up with 167 allowables on the tip of his tongue.
Minghao’s morning routine is clinical. There is no room for mistakes here. Once or twice, he had accidentally mumbled an ow or an aw, come on, and it had ruined his entire day.
Not today. Today, he does everything right.
Brushes his teeth, showers, puts on clothes without so much of a whisper.
He runs into Mingyu in the apartment elevator. The two exchange nods.
Mingyu tilts his phone screen towards Minghao. The Notes app has been pulled up. Have a good day!, Mingyu had typed out. It’s the same note every morning, the same platitude delivered in this roundabout manner.
Minghao offers him a smile and another nod. One he hopes will communicate you, too.
The streets aren’t devoid of sound. Dogs still bark; cars still beep in traffic. The world’s natural order of things doesn’t care for the state of affairs. It is a rebellion in its own right, led by the rustle of the leaves and the chirping of the birds.
As usual, Minghao seeks out the auntie often stationed outside his office building. He finds her resting underneath the shade of a tree, her visor drawn over her eyes. He doesn’t greet her. He doesn’t have to.
She’s used to these transactions. People standing idly by until she notices them. People pointing out their order instead of saying it out loud.
Minghao points at the photo of the chicken noodle soup. She nods and goes through the motions— thermos, styrofoam bowl, plastic bag. He presses his payment into her withered, wrinkled hand, and gives out the first two words he speaks on a good day like this.
“Thank¹ you²,” Minghao says, because the government can take his voice, but it will not take his manners.
The auntie smiles up at him, her grin all gums and decaying teeth. She reaches out to gently pat Minghao on the elbow, and he accepts it like the blessing of goodwill that it’s supposed to be.
There’s no way of predicting what kind of day it will be in the office.
Sometimes, Minghao uses up more than half of his words arguing with stubborn clients— often ones who have the status to buy more words, to twist the government’s arm into bending the system a bit. Then there are days where Minghao doesn’t have to speak at all, and he clocks out with 165 still on his plate.
No one at work particularly misses Minghao’s voice.
Not the same way some of them lament the loss of Seokmin’s singing or Junhui’s stand-up comedy. No, Minghao fell in with the likes of Jihoon and Wonwoo, who all knew how to play this game rather well.
It’s no surprise that by the time lunch is rolling around, Minghao is still going strong while others are already down for the count.
“You¹⁵³ know¹⁵⁴ what¹⁵⁵ I¹⁵⁶ miss¹⁵⁷?” Soonyoung announces.
Half the break room looks up at him, their expressions caught between amusement and exasperation. It was just like Soonyoung to squander his words like this, to command everyone’s attention so he can proclaim, “Karaoke¹⁵⁸! I¹⁵⁹ miss¹⁶⁰ karaoke¹⁶¹, man¹⁶²!”
Seungcheol rolls his eyes. Hansol pulls a face.
“What¹⁶³?!” Soonyoung demands. “I¹⁶⁴ used¹⁶⁵ to¹⁶⁶ slay¹⁶⁷—”
His tongue clicks.
The words are stolen right from him; the song Soonyoung once supposedly ‘slayed,’ now a mystery.
Minghao shakes his head. Soonyoung is red-faced but undeterred, already reaching for his phone so he can pull up Spotify and subject everybody to what was once his go-to karaoke track.
Music nowadays is mostly instrumental. Maybe there’s a phrase or two in the chorus, but artists bear the brunt of this new world’s order.
Lunch ends. Minghao is still comfortably in the 160’s range. A feat in itself.
But then the telephone at his desk rings. It’s a sharp, shrill sound. One he’s come to hate. His lips tug into a frown and— for a moment— he considers not answering.
It rings a second time, and Minghao concedes he would rather not get fired for being stingy.
He picks up the phone.
He doesn’t say anything, doesn’t greet the other person with hello or how are you or what do you need.
The person on the other end pauses for a beat. Then, as if realizing this is Xu Minghao they’re phoning, they break the silence.
“Update¹⁰³ on¹⁰⁴ the¹⁰⁵ Kim¹⁰⁶ account¹⁰⁷?” Chan asks, his voice crackling over the line.
One thing Minghao has started to do is to compare and critique.
To compare— the Chan of a couple of years ago would have definitely not gone straight to the point. Pre-decree, Chan had been the type of person to offer an entire backstory before finally getting at what he needed or wanted from you.
To critique— the question is two words too many. Minghao would have simply said the Kim account, or even just update? if he was feeling particularly spiteful. It’s a twisted, holier-than-thou mindset that has no place in this world that’s already taken so much, but he can’t help it.
Minghao is not wasteful with his words anymore. Repetition is a felony; all unnecessary conversation, a transgression.
He grits out the updates, each phrase carefully chosen and weighed as if there’s an invisible scale in his mind. The entire time, he thinks to himself: This could have been an email.
Once again, he ends the conversation with a murmured “thank⁵⁸ you⁵⁹” and that cruel, smug impression he’s somewhat better than his coworkers.
Work crawls to its eventual conclusion. Minghao practically flies out of the office, communicating with his coworkers through glances and gestures. A wave of his hand. Goodbye. A tilt of his head. Have a good weekend. A hint of a smirk. Thank fucking God it’s Friday.
He gets home and kills time.
A silent film on the television. Microwave pizza and a can of cola. Afterwards, he puts on a playlist of old songs, the ones made when words were still a luxury that could be taken for granted.
There was a time where Minghao might’ve belted along. Nowadays, he just dances.
He weaves through the furniture. He taps his foot along to the beat. He is sand in an hourglass, an ellipsis at the end of a sentence…
His phone rings.
This time, it’s a sound he loves.
He practically stumbles over his couch in his excitement. His screen has lit up with your name, with a photo of you from your first date. You had talked his ear off, then, and he had hung on every word. You’re smiling sweetly up at the camera. It’s a reminder of the things that have changed, and what hasn’t.
The moment he answers the call, he’s already giggling.
“Hello⁶⁰,” Minghao breathes. “I⁶¹ only⁶² used⁶³ fifty-nine⁶⁴ today⁶⁵; I⁶⁶ saved⁶⁷ the⁶⁸ rest⁶⁹ for⁷⁰ you.⁷¹”
You don’t respond.
He hears the huff of your laugh.
The click of your tongue.
Ah.
It can’t be helped. As much as he wants to be selfish, to demand that you save at least three words for him, he knows these things are inevitable. It doesn’t happen often, anyway. You’re usually just as careful and cautious.
He’s sure he’ll get the full story over text. Some complaint about how work had demanded a little too much of you, how you had no choice but to give.
So, now, it’s Minghao’s turn to give; yours, to take.
“I⁷² love⁷³ you⁷⁴,” he says.
Depending on what kind of night it is, he might say the words differently. I love you with an over-the-top British accent that has you chuckling below your breath. I love you in sing-song, reminiscent of the days he could once still afford to hold a tune. I love you sleepily, while lying in bed, like it’s the last words he wants on his lips.
Tonight, he says it in a slow, reverent whisper. “I⁷⁵ love⁷⁶ you.⁷⁷”
He enunciates every word, letting them mean something new each time.
“I⁷⁸ love⁷⁹ you⁸⁰,” he says, because he means to say, It’s me, Minghao, Myungho, whatever you want to call me, and I love you. It’s me. I’m yours. All of it, all of me.
“I⁸¹ love⁸² you⁸³,” he says, in a way he hopes you understand that the verb is interchangeable. He loves you, yes, but he also adores you. He reveres you. He worships you, and misses you, and wants you. He packs all of it in that single four-lettered word and prays it is enough.
“I⁸⁴ love⁸⁵ you⁸⁶,” he says.
You, long-distance lover. You, the only one he would waste his words on. You, you, you.
He says I love you thirty-two and a third times.
He’s cut off with an unceremonious “I¹⁶⁷—,” his tongue clicking to signal his quota. The day ends, quietly as it began,—
Minghao lies on his couch and stares at the ceiling, his phone pressed in between his cheek and his shoulder.
You stay on the other end of the line.
The two of you listen to each other breathe.

“yeah, that’s it-” his hoarse voice is momentarily cut off as his gaze trail down your figure, watching you hopelessly tiptoe for that last canned food on the kitchen shelf, “need a hand?”
you scowl, your glossy lips pursed as you send a narrowed look over your shoulders and TOJI could almost chuckle. almost. he doesn’t, instead those sharp eyes darken and linger on the exposed fat of your ass that peeks out from under the short skirt you’re dressed in - you 100% knew what you was doing and toji wasn’t stupid.
“i can handle it myself, ‘ji.” you mumble, trying to disguise the pout in your voice as you keep reaching, small whimpers of frustration starting to bubble in your throat. sure seems it, toji scoffs mentally, thick arms crossing over his broad chest as he continues to watch. he has no idea how he ended up with such a persistent little thing, unable to ask for a hand to the point where it frustrates him but as the tent in his grey sweats grows, toji knows that no matter how much you seem to piss him off, you can fix it just as well.
he watches you, observant in the way that tiny skirt sways with your wiggles, the plush of your thighs on perfect display for him. a groan escapes his lips, catching your attention as he shoves a chair out from underneath the table, throwing himself down into it. you’ve been with toji long enough to read his actions, his emotions too. he’s not adherently upset with you, no, you can see that by the prominent bulge that could almost have neon arrows pointed at it.
suddenly, your focus is shifted and god, if he wasn’t so stoic and grumpy, you’d be able to see the way he could grin at the little sparkle in your eyes illuminated by the sun coming through the kitchen window behind him. you don’t need to be told, although he likes to give the order sometimes - you’re already sinking down onto your knees before toji gets a chance to part those mildly cracked lips.
his tongue darts out, wetting his lips and running along his scar and a deep chuckle rumbles from his chest, “what? see something you like, baby?”
you was almost drooling, salivating when you pushed your soft cheek up against his bulge. the warmth matches that of your flustered state, pressing sweet kisses along his clothes length and toji almost growls. the feral noise resonates deep in his throat, his big, calloused hands wanting to reach out and grab your hair - he restrains himself. it takes him a lot of effort but he manages it, staring down at the way your long eyelashes flutter around your half-lidded eyes, brushing up against his sweats.
“always…” you mumble softly, your voice sweet like honey when your much smaller hands grab at the hem of his sweats and pull- no, tug the fabric just down his thick thighs, the muscles tensing slightly under your touch. heavy cock standing at attention, bobbing against the dark happy trail on his abdomen, toji finally sits back properly until the chair creaks. he’s always commented about the size of these damn chairs, too small for a man of his stature but perfect for a little doll such as yourself.
it amazes the buff man how easily you’re almost hypnotised by the sight of his cock every damn time it springs free, no matter how many times you’ve seen it or how long you’ve been together. it’s like a moth to a flame, a cat to its favourite toy or even a child receiving a present - you really do love this dick, huh?
toji's thoughts are cut short when your warm tongue licks up the vein of his cock, starting at the base and following its way up, up, up until it circles around the angry red tip. the action draws a hiss from his mouth, dark brows knitting together as those glossy lips wrap around the head, swirling your tongue around it before sinking further and further down the length. your nose buries into the thick pubes at the base, inhaling the familiar musky scent that has your eyes rolling back; other than the thick cock of your partner shoved to the back of his throat.
finally, a large hand reaches up to grab the hair at the back of your head. his fingers find purchase there, nails scratching at your scalp and he groans, loud and deep in his throat, "that's it, y'got a real filthy mouth y'know that?"
he could almost chuckle at the way your eyes - now hazy - peer up at him from this position, a slight gloss along the waterline that makes him grin. after a few more seconds, you pull your head off with a gasp, saliva stringing from your lips to his fat cock with a sinful giggle breaking the tense silence. toji's narrowed eyes follow the way you swallow, placing sloppy kisses on his heavy balls cupped in your hands.
not that toji would ever admit it, he could never admit it to anyone because god forbid his ego would be bruised but seeing you like this, so cockdrunk and littering him in kisses and kitten licks as if he's a piece of candy, it truly has him all heart eyes for you; just like he falls in love with you a little more every time he feasts on the sight of your drooling lips and his cock shoved into your tight warmth.
crystalline tears pool in the corners of your eyes when toji drags his hips back and forth, testing the waters every time pubes tickle your upper lip. the sight above you is sinful, the sunlight behind toji casting a glow around his shadow like some holy figure, someone for you to worship on your knees - you could do that. you gag with every jagged movement of his hips with the placement of your small hands on his muscular thighs. toji's aware he's pushing limits - hell it's his favourite thing to do - but he's watching, observing your actions and movements. the hands on his thighs, the tears running down your cheeks, no matter what you haven't tapped on his thigh, you haven't pushed yourself away.
"c'mon girl, you can take it better than that, can't you?" he scoffs, fingers digging into your hair just a little tighter at the sight of a spark in your eyes, something igniting deep in you that he knows he can fan the flame, "what? is that pretty little whore mouth too full of my dick for you to speak?"
he wants to chuckle - he might chuckle, actually because the moment those words escape his mouth, his voice husky from the sensations in his lower half, he notices the way your thighs clench together and one of your dainty hands travels down under your skirt.
dinner can wait. suddenly, something is much more appetising to the likes of toji and with your whimpers and choking as the melodic backdrop, he has no intentions of stopping without his fill.

My heart is so dang full from seeing some fandom friends this past weekend. I'm still catching up on sleep but, y'know, worth it.
Chapter 3 of more than a footnote will be posted next week. Here's some fun Dev/Niall/Baz banter from that. I love their friendship so much.
Niall POV
Baz lowers himself into a chair and snatches one of the cups with his long fingers. “I don’t need any of whatever alcohol you’ve smuggled in here,” he says. “Yeah, you do.” Dev withdraws a flask from his jacket’s inner pocket and sloshes it back and forth. “This is a school-sanctioned dance. Booze makes it 110% better. ’Member the winter ball in sixth year?” Baz rolls his eyes, but a smile whispers across his lips. “When Niall and I had to carry you back to Mummers? You sang the whole way across the courtyard. Forever ruined Paramore for me.” “You,” Dev points a finger at Baz, eyebrow notching up, “sang with me.” “And I still firmly state you imagined that.” Dev slides his eyes to me. “Ni, mate, back me up. You heard him.” Now both Pitch cousins are staring at me. I grin behind my cup and wink at Baz. “My own memory is pretty fuzzy.” I’m rewarded with a wicked smile and approving nod from Baz, Good man.  I hold my cup out to Dev. “I do remember you singing in our room that night. Though you had graduated to My Chemical Romance by that point.” “Classic,” Baz says, sing-song. Dev sticks his tongue out at both of us, metal bar glinting neon under the dance floor lights, and then pours a generous amount of vodka into my ginger beer. “We are young,” he says. “We are hot. Why not have as much fun while we can?” Baz lifts a perfect eyebrow at Dev, and accuses, “You started early.” “Fuck yeah I did.” Dev adds the alcohol to his drink and raises the flask once more at Baz. “Fuuuun,” he says, drawing out the word, and waggles his eyebrows.  We both grin when Baz hands over his cup with a shake of his head. “Just this one,” he says. “Of course, cuz.” Vodka is poured, and the flask disappears into Dev’s jacket. “Wouldn’t want to impugn your angsty, brooding vibes.” “That’s not how you use that word,” Baz says with a dainty sip of his drink. “What, vibes?” I snort into my cup.
love love and more love to you all. I'd write more, maybe something charming and eloquent about art and story and community, but I'm truly well-zombified at the moment. y'all rock. mwah. 🖤

More Good GIW AU/Building Bridges, in celebration of finally making progress. <3
---
"What are all of those for?" Flore asked, stopping by the library corner where Agents N and G seemed to be sharing a pile of books, some of which appeared to be so ancient that they must have been brought over straight from HQ.
"I sent in a request for any records we have of ancient cases of high liminality or ectoplasm exposure," N explained, looking up from his book.
"Danny?" Flore asked, sitting down a respectful distance from the ancient books. She hadn't met the Fentons' son yet, but she'd certainly heard N and G talk about him enough.
N nodded. "G said something about his accident was ringing a bell, and listen to this," he explained, and reached for one of the newer books that had been set aside. A translation. "A twelfth century account from a Spanish priest. As he seemed to take his last breath, a whirlpool of the brightest spring leaves seemed to swallow him before my eyes."
"A natural portal," Flore recognized, startled. Natural portals were incredibly rare, and it was always jarring to hear something like that described by someone from so long ago.
N nodded. "It continues, when he emerged once more, I could not tell if he had been cursed by the Devil or blessed by God. He was healed, but he evermore had the countenance of a very sick man, and power no normal man could dream of. At times, he resembled nothing so much as the ghost of himself." Flore pursed her lips. "I know, it doesn't quite fit, but it's something. Maybe the effect wasn't as strong because Danny didn't actually go into the portal. And this."
N shut the book and set it aside, retrieving another that had been placed only a little to one side. He was on a roll now; there was no stopping him from explaining everything they'd found.
"A blacksmith's diary from the Edo era," N explained, increasingly excited. "This has several conversations with a ghost that had fallen through a natural portal and become stranded in the real world, I couldn't believe they let me borrow it. Listen: I asked him what became of living people that found themselves in the spirit realm, as he found himself here. He told me that they become immersed in ghostly energy, such that they become something unique. A marginal being. A living ghost." He tapped the page. "The last one has a couple possible translations in the footnotes. Demihuman. Half-spirit. Or just 'halfa.'"
"That's crazy." Flore tried to imagine that. "Do you think that's describing what happened with the priest's friend, or someone more like Danny?"
N shook his head. "They don't talk about it any more after that," he admitted, clearly crushed by this information. "It's probably the first, but if nothing else, it's evidence that the changes can be much deeper than we realized. Maybe you can be so liminal that it starts to rewrite your biology." He looked entirely too excited by the idea. "Because there's one more, listen-"
N shut the second book and leaned over to grab the last, an older book.
"Nineteenth century case study," he told her, flipping it open. "The patient's case is most peculiar, inexplicable to any practitioner of modern medicine. Her heart beats so slow and soft that I thought she must surely be dying, yet it has been a year and she seems in good health. Furthermore, she is cold; her skin is as cool as a winter's day even in the middle of summer, yet she does not shiver. Once, I witnessed her hold her breath for longer than it takes to boil a pot of water." He shut the book again. "There's more, but I think you get the gist of it."

Note
so I am primarily an Eddie x Chrissy shipper but I ADORE the Eddie Munson TikTok saga with my entire heart
can we get some more insight into how Eddie was affected by Chrissy in your universe?
Thank you for asking this!
I’ve wanted to talk about Chrissy in this AU since the beginning, but I just don’t realistically see Eddie talking about her on his TikTok. Anytime Eddie has so much as alluded to Chrissy over the years, it has stirred up all this drama about that spring break and it always gets back to her family. And he doesn’t want that.
He doesn’t want to remind her remaining relatives of her death. He doesn’t want the accusations that some people still have that he killed her. He doesn’t want to attach all that pain and suffering onto the memory of Chrissy.
She was more than that one awful week in 1986. She was so much more and every time the Hawkins Murders get brought up she becomes less and less a real human person and more just a footnote in a bigger tragedy.
So, he doesn’t talk about her publicly.
So, Eddie honors her in the quiet ways that he can.
He honors her in the tattoo over his heart and in the initials engraved on the inside of the ring he never takes off. He honors her in the silence before every live performance and in all the songs so filled with grief that they’re never performed to an audience.
He honors her in the life he lives.
He tries to at least, because Chrissy is not a ghost that haunts him.
She is a presence that sits beside him. She is the sun warm on his face and tea made just a little too sweet. She is the skip-beat of his heart, the stroke of a guitar, the sadness that seeps behind his eyes. She is an empty house built inside him, and she is the windows he made in those walls, and she is beautiful still. And he misses her. Still
So, he honors her in silent ways when she deserves so much more.
She deserved a life, so he lives his thankful and fully. She deserved the same love that she put into the world, so Eddie never misses an opportunity to show his. She deserved adventure, and travel, and to see a world so much brighter than Hawkins, so when Eddie got the chance. It didn’t feel like running away. It felt like honor.
Eddie knows that he was not always kind.
He knows that he has a capacity for cruelty, that Wayne raised him right but he has shades of his father in him. He knows that for as much as the world othered him, as much as Hawkins ostracized him, he played into it. He othered himself. He grew bristles and thorns young, and he bared them to anybody that got close. He was mean.
He could be so mean, but Chrissy.
She didn’t remember him that day in the woods, but Eddie has always noticed her because she was kind. She was so effortlessly kind to everybody, even to him. She apologized in the hall for bumping his locker. She stopped when he dropped his dice instead of kicking them across the floor.
She smiled at him like he wasn’t a freak, the same smile she smiled at everybody.
She was so kind. It was for everybody. She was kind to him the way that she was kind to everybody else, and it was just… It was never fair. It was never going to be fair.
