Mech setting lore: Tin Soldiers
Tin soldiers, or Tinmen, is a derogatory term for the mercenaries now common in the False Peace, piloting Generation Two Frames in the service of whoever has the scratch to pay them.
they are soldiers of fortune, always in search of the next score, and rarely loyal to anything but their pocketbook. However, they are rarely a solo act, usually working in small teams, to maximize their effectiveness as a combat force. While Solo Tinmen aren't unheard of, it's said that only the exceptionally skilled or the exceptionally stupid walk that road, and there's a great deal more of one than the other.
Tinmen are supplied and maintenenced by engineers known as Steelmongers, who will fix, service, buy, and sell Frame parts, making them the best friend of many a Tin Soldier.
Tinmen will usually get their jobs from a Broker, middlemen and fixers who connect potential clients with Tinmen, as well as handling contract negotiations. These jobs take on three main types, and many groups of Tinmen will specialize in one or another, honing their skills in a particular area:
Explorator missions see the Tinmen contracted as hired muscle, usually for a corporation or city-state, to escort one of their Explorator Teams to find and loot an Old World site, with the goal of finding Old World Tech hidden within. The mercenaries are a necessary component of this operation, thanks to the advanced, self-repairing automated defenses of the Old World Installations, wielding fearsome weaponry from a forgotten time. While such contracts can be quite lucrative, their true value is in salvage rights, enabling Tinmen to lay claim to technology and materials they find in the Installations, often powerful weapons or impressive frame parts that can be used on their own mechs or sold to a Steelmonger for exorbitant prices.
Proxy missions are the second type of contract, where Tin Soldiers are hired as irregular military forces, sent to fight in deniable skirmishes with other mercenaries hired by other powers. This style of warfare is necessary in the time of the False Peace, as any open war between corporations or city-states would be met with a full onslaught from the Knights of Svalbard, a confrontation which no power on earth can afford.
The third type of mission are Defense contracts, where Tinmen are hired to defend an Independent settlement or City-State from Raider Forces or an Automaton Attack, where automated forces from an Old World Installation act on ancient directives to attack local settlements and assault City-state forces.
Despite the general animosity towards them, many Tinmen come to be viewed as celebrities, after a fashion, with tales of their exploits told and retold time and time again, some even gaining genuine fans, willing to put themselves in harm's way to see their heroes in action.

Features the following design quirks: Accurate Weapon (all), Battle Computer, Combat Computer, Cowl, Easy to Pilot, Extended Torso Twist, Improved Communications, Improved Cooling Jacket (all), Improved Sensors, Multi-Trac, Nimble Jumper, Reinforced Legs, Variable Range Targeting, Illegal Design (overweight)
Overview: The Turkina is a powerful OmniMech that was first seen in the Turkina Keshik at the Battle of Tukayyid, and entered general service with Clan Jade Falcon following the end of the Refusal War. In a design oddity, the Turkina mounts enough jump jets to vault 90 meters hardwired onto the frame, rather than using them in modular pods. While this simplified repair, it also uses tonnage that could be devoted to other systems when a mission does not call for jumping.
Capabilities: The Turkina Bb is a one-off 'Mech built specifically for Khan Stephanie Chistu of Clan Jade Falcon. Uprated to a 100-ton chassis, the Bb was directly inspired by the Turkina B configuration. Like that variant, the Bb uses pairs of Large Pulse Lasers, ER Large Lasers, Medium Pulse Lasers, and ER Medium Lasers. All of these are linked to an advanced Targeting Computer loaded with Variable Range Targeting programming, while the individual weapons themselves have been accurized and tuned for decreased heat generation. Eleven extra double heat sinks are fitted - three less than the standard B. In their place, a Spheroid Radical Heat Sink system was put in place, which - even in passive mode - renders Khan Chistu's 'Mech nearly heat neutral, even in the most heat-intensive situations. One small holdover of Chistu's time under the hated Malvina can be found in the armored talons emplaced on the 'Mech's feet - along with extensive leg reinforcement, this gives Chistu the ability to affect devastating Death from Above attacks. With no weapons that need ammunition, this configuration can stay in the field as long as its MechWarrior can, aided by an armored cockpit and head-mounted armored cowl to provide additional protection, while an armored compact gyro ensures the 'Mech will remain standing even after significant punishment. Rounding out the package, a Neutron Star CEWS system ensures the Khan can remain in contact with and fully command all her forces, as well as provide the benefits of active probe and ECM sensor systems.
Deployment: Built in 3151, the sole produced Turkina Bb serves in Turkina Keshik of Clan Jade Falcon, piloted solely by Khan Stephanie Chistu.
History: The Turkina Bb has so far seen service only a handful of times so far - the first mission for the 'Mech was spearheading Jade Falcon forces during the Third Star League's Operation PERSUASION. It was during the drop on Caph that Khan Chistu - fighting alongside her lover and abtahka Tara Jade Falcon - first met Cadha Jaffray of Northwind. This meeting and the frank discussions that resulted would ultimately culminate in the accession of Northwind to the Third Star League in December 3152, and result in an agreement between the Falcons and the Northwind Highlanders to share the planet under the New Jointly-Owned Worlds Agreement of 3153. The second notable mission to date took place in October 3152 - Khan Chistu led a Falcon/SLDF force to "rescue" the Jade Falcon Remnants centered around Sudeten. Taking Jiyi Chistu as her new saKhan after he won a Trial of Position against Khalus Pryde, Khan Chistu's mission granted the Third Star League an outpost in the Hinterlands, as well as bringing them into direct negotiation with the Tamar Pact, the Arc-Royal Liberty Coalition, and Alyina Mercantile League - the relationships forged by this mission would come to later prove instrumental in the SLDF's intervention in the Lyran War of Reclamation.

Thug
The Thug was designed by Maltex Corporation as a direct competitor to the popular Warhammer BattleMech. First seeing production in 2572, the Thug sought to directly address some of the challenges which faced the Warhammer, chief of which was to increase armor protection without sacrificing firepower. When compared side-by-side, the Thug has a great many advantages over the Warhammer, yet it never wholly replaced the venerable 'Mech. Still the Thug proved popular enough that Maltex Corporation was forced to contract Earthwerks Incorporated to produce the Thug on Keystone in order to meet demand. Although it has had its detractors, the Thug has proven itself for over five hundred years to be the quintessential "zombie 'Mech."
Production of the Thug from Maltex's original factory on Errai ceased when it was destroyed in 2835, one of many casualties of the Succession Wars, leaving only Earthwerks to continue building new Thugs at a rate of twelve per year. Unfortunately the same terrible conflict resulted in the loss of much advanced knowledge and technology, threatening their ability to keep even this meager production rate up. But, in an ironic twist of fate, it was the Warhammer which helped keep the Thug production line alive: with the loss of their original PPC weaponry, Earthwerks instead reworked the design to make use of the extensive stockpile of Donal PPCs used by the Warhammer, allowing new Thugs to be built and repairs to be made more easily.
Beyond the few still in service to the Great Houses the largest user of Thugs was ComStar, a fact confirmed upon the reveal of their Com Guards. Eventually the recovery of lostech would allow both Earthwerks and Maltex to restart production of original-model Thugs during the 3050s. These were supplanted by new variants which, following the formation of the Second Star League, were supplied to ComStar, the SLDF, the Draconis Combine and Federated Suns. New Thugs were also built for the Word of Blake and those forces of the Free Worlds League aligned with them during the Jihad.
The armament on the Thug is a very simple yet effective combination. For long-range striking power, it carries a Tiegart Particle Projector Cannon in each arm, similar in performance to those found on the Warhammer yet ten percent smaller and with more redundancies. Backing up the PPCs are a Bical-6 SRM launcher mounted in each side torso with one ton of CASE-protected reloads per side, allowing the Thug to fight off enemies which get within the minimum range of its PPCs. Each SRM tube is protected by a dilating cover when not in use.
Eighteen double heat sinks gives the Thug far superior heat dissipation compared to the Warhammer while a ten-ton heavier Endo Steel frame allows it to carry fifteen and a half tons of armor, more than half again as much carried by the Warhammer. The Thug also benefits from the fact that it has hand actuators, making it a mean close-quarters combatant and a good raider able to carry away the spoils of its labor.

The Humble Mana Construct
The mana construct was a solution in search of a problem, but mercifully, the world is full of problems.
First devised and crafted by master arcanists over a thousand years ago, the original mana constructs were highly temporary, highly volatile globs of toxic magical residue armed only with the crudest of sentience. The primary purpose of the mana construct was, itself, a form of advanced waste disposal. The sentient globules, too toxic even for the sturdy, acidic digestive systems of gelatinous oozes, would simply walk themselves to lands unknown and far away from their creators, then combust spectacularly on the local wildlife and geology.
When neighboring settlements and factions retaliated against what appeared to be unprovoked attacks, the constructs were fortified to withstand external harm until just the right moment.
When these same factions took this as yet-further evidence of hostility and threatened to destroy the wizards from whom these constructs were sent, an alternative had to come about. The constructs had to be made to serve another purpose.
Though the artificers who first granted the mana construct a skeletal frame are long lost to history, their logic is not. The skeleton, made of an exceptionally magically inert silicon-glass compound, mimics the humanoid form intentionally. It allows the formerly unarmed and shapeless constructs to perform manual labor, carry objects, and conduct simple tasks like carrying loads. More advanced designs can even replicate human-like finger dexterity, making them suitable for simple crafting activities, repair work, mining, and agriculture. Their ability to survive comfortably in harsh climes also makes them ideal replacements for intelligent humanoids where they might otherwise be endangered.
The spread of such arcane technology, of course, has been limited. The mana residue that constitutes them (the light blue, and quite cold, flame that seems to enwrap them) is only produced as a byproduct of old and highly inefficient alchemical procedures, and as such is too expensive to be used in regular production. Additionally, the original designers were secretive, and much of the specifics of the construction of mana golems are thought lost to time.

Building a cargo spaceship capable of exploring our solar system based on current technology and the knowledge gleaned from our understanding of engineering, science, and chemistry requires us to work within practical and realistic constraints, given that we're not yet in an era of faster-than-light travel. This project would involve a modular design, reliable propulsion systems, life support, cargo handling, and advanced automation or AI. Here’s a conceptual breakdown:
Tumblr media
1. Ship Structure
Hull and Frame: A spaceship designed for deep space exploration needs a durable, lightweight frame. Advanced materials like titanium alloys and carbon-fiber composites would be used to ensure structural integrity under the stress of space travel while keeping the mass low. The outer hull would be made with multi-layered insulation to protect against micrometeorites and space radiation.
Dimensions: A cargo space vessel could be roughly 80-100 meters long and 30 meters wide, giving it sufficient space for cargo holds, living quarters, and propulsion systems.
Cost: $500 million (materials, assembly, and insulation).
2. Propulsion Systems
Primary Propulsion: Nuclear Thermal Propulsion (NTP) or Nuclear Electric Propulsion (NEP):
NTP would involve heating hydrogen with a nuclear reactor to achieve high exhaust velocities, providing faster travel times across the solar system. NEP converts nuclear energy into electricity, driving highly efficient ion thrusters. Both systems offer relatively efficient interplanetary travel.
A hybrid solution between NTP and NEP could optimize fuel efficiency for longer trips and maneuverability near celestial bodies.
Cost: $1 billion (development of nuclear propulsion, reactors, and installation).
Fuel: For NTP, hydrogen would be used as a propellant; for NEP, xenon or argon would be the ionized fuel. It would be replenished through in-space refueling depots or by mining water on asteroids and moons (future prospect).
Cost (fuel): $50 million.
3. Power Systems
Nuclear Fission Reactor: A compact fission reactor would power the ship’s life support, propulsion, and onboard systems. Reactors designed by NASA’s Kilopower project would provide consistent energy for long missions.
Backup Solar Arrays: Solar panels, optimized for efficiency beyond Mars’ orbit, would serve as secondary power sources in case of reactor failure.
Cost: $300 million (including reactors, solar panels, and energy storage systems).
4. Cargo Modules
The cargo holds need to be pressurized and temperature-controlled for sensitive materials or scientific samples, while some holds could be left unpressurized for bulk materials like metals, water, or fuel.
Modular Design: The ship should have detachable cargo pods for easy unloading and resupply at different planetary bodies or space stations.
Cost: $200 million (modular design, pressurization systems, automation).
5. Life Support Systems
Water and Oxygen Recycling: Systems like NASA’s Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) would recycle water, oxygen, and even waste. These systems are key for long-duration missions where resupply may be limited.
CO2 Scrubbers: To remove carbon dioxide from the air, maintaining breathable conditions for the crew.
Artificial Gravity (optional): A rotating section of the ship could generate artificial gravity through centripetal force, improving the crew’s health on longer missions. However, this would increase complexity and cost.
Cost: $200 million (life support systems, with optional artificial gravity setup).
6. AI and Automation
AI-Controlled Systems: AI would manage navigation, propulsion optimization, cargo handling, and even medical diagnostics. Automated drones could be used for ship maintenance and repairs in space.
Navigation: Advanced AI would assist in calculating complex orbital maneuvers, interplanetary transfers, and landings.
Autonomous Cargo Handling: Robotics and AI would ensure that cargo can be efficiently moved between space stations, planets, and the ship.
Cost: $150 million (AI development, robotics, automation).
7. Communication and Sensors
Communication Arrays: High-gain antennas would allow for deep-space communication back to Earth, supplemented by laser communication systems for high-speed data transfers.
Radars and Sensors: For mapping asteroid belts, detecting anomalies, and navigating planets, advanced LIDAR, radar, and spectrometers would be necessary. These sensors would aid in planetary exploration and mining operations.
Cost: $100 million (communication systems, sensors, and diagnostics).
8. Radiation Protection
Water Shielding: Water, which is also used in life support, would double as a radiation shield around the living quarters.
Electromagnetic Shields: Experimental concepts involve creating a small electromagnetic field around the ship to deflect solar and cosmic radiation (early TRL, requires more development).
Cost: $50 million (radiation shielding).
9. Crew Quarters
Living Quarters: Designed for long-duration missions with the capability to house 4-6 crew members comfortably. The quarters would feature radiation protection, artificial lighting cycles to simulate day and night, and recreational facilities to maintain crew morale on multi-year missions.
Medical Bay: An AI-assisted medical bay equipped with robotic surgery and telemedicine would ensure the crew remains healthy.
Cost: $100 million (crew quarters, recreational facilities, medical systems).
10. Landing and Exploration Modules
Surface Exploration Vehicles: For landing on moons or planets like Mars or Europa, a modular lander or rover system would be required. These vehicles would use methane/oxygen engines or electric propulsion to take off and land on various celestial bodies.
Cost: $300 million (lander, rovers, exploration modules).
---
Total Estimated Cost: $2.95 Billion
Additional Considerations:
1. Launch Vehicles: To get the spacecraft into orbit, you would need a heavy-lift rocket like SpaceX’s Starship or NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS). Multiple launches may be required to assemble the ship in orbit.
Cost (launch): $500 million (several launches).
2. In-Space Assembly: The ship would likely be built and assembled in low-Earth orbit (LEO), with components brought up in stages by heavy-lift rockets.
Cost: $200 million (orbital assembly infrastructure and operations).
---
Grand Total: $3.65 Billion
This estimate provides a general cost breakdown for building a cargo spaceship that could explore and transport materials across the solar system. This concept ship is realistic based on near-future technologies, leveraging both nuclear propulsion and automation to ensure efficient exploration and cargo transportation across the solar system.

Clear Vision, Safer Journeys: The Importance of Timely Windscreen and Window Chip Repairs
Driving with a damaged windscreen not only compromises your visibility but also puts your safety at risk. That’s why addressing even the smallest cracks or chips quickly is crucial. Services like windscreen chip repair and window chip repair are essential for maintaining the structural integrity of your vehicle and ensuring a safe driving experience. Over time, small imperfections in your windscreen or windows can worsen, leading to costlier repairs or full replacements.
Most motorists tend to overlook minor chips, believing they’re harmless. However, these small issues can expand rapidly, especially under temperature fluctuations or additional pressure from road vibrations. The front windscreen, being a key component of the vehicle’s support structure, plays a vital role in protecting passengers during accidents. A compromised windscreen weakens the vehicle’s frame and reduces its ability to withstand collision impact.
The repair process is typically quick and efficient when handled by professionals. Using advanced technology, technicians can restore clarity and strength to the glass without needing a full replacement. Modern window chip repair techniques often involve injecting a clear resin into the chip, which hardens under UV light to restore both strength and visibility. The entire process may take less than an hour, making it convenient for drivers with tight schedules.
Preventing further damage is another major reason to act promptly. A small chip left unrepaired can develop into a long crack that spans across the glass. In such cases, repair is no longer a viable option, and replacement becomes the only solution. Not only is this more expensive, but it also takes more time and effort. Proactive windscreen chip repair saves both money and time in the long run.
Some car owners might attempt DIY kits, but these rarely match the quality and reliability of a professional job. Incorrect applications can trap air, create optical distortions, or fail to bond correctly, resulting in a weakened glass structure. Trained technicians, such as those at Advanced Auto Glazing, ensure the job is done with precision, minimizing the risk of future issues and restoring the glass to its original strength and clarity.
It’s important to choose a trusted service provider that uses high-quality materials and the latest tools. Not all repair services offer the same level of craftsmanship, and choosing the right one can make a significant difference in the longevity and safety of the repair. With decades of experience and a reputation for excellent customer service, Advanced Auto Glazing stands out as a dependable option for motorists who value quality and reliability.
Additionally, timely repairs contribute to maintaining your vehicle’s resale value. Potential buyers often check the condition of the windscreen and windows, and visible chips can be a red flag, indicating neglect. By addressing these issues promptly, you present your car in the best light and avoid price reductions during resale negotiations.
Many insurance policies cover chip repairs without affecting your no-claims bonus, making it even more worthwhile to address the damage early. Drivers should check with their providers, as prompt professional repairs may be fully covered or come at minimal cost.
