My first bit of research for Jar Full of Cosmos, featuring a jar full of cosmos. I followed this tutorial pretty much to the letter in order to make this. I'm not sure it will work for my project, but it was fast and fun!

Spore multi-legged animation import finding

So, if you guys ever installed my or Mx3's dance mods, you'll notice that the animation for creatures with more than 2 legs tend to mess up especially when the creature spin around to any orientation that isn't straightforward. As seen here:

This is because most available animations out there are made for bipedal humanoid models, and does not take into account of multi legged rigs. This cause for the legs in positions far away from the body to not move to the new positions the torso has rotated to.

However, as you can see with vanilla Test Drive animations such as Hippity Hop, Flowers, Space Walk, these are work with creatures with different leg configurations. So how do they do that?

This is because instead of moving just the Root bone of the creature, they also move the Creature Frame. And naturally, the legs/feet are coded to move accordingly to this frame. But this is isn't the case however if the legs animation info keyframe has -flags 0x2. This cause the leg to simply animate as programmed without trying to accommodate to the Creature Frame.

And from what I found: the Creature Frame bone is responsible for the XY translation of the creature, and most of Z rotation, while the root bone is responsible for the Z translation and XY rotation a bit of the Z rotation (we'll get to that later). the other parts also function the same way as the root bone.

So now the question is, how do you turn a bipedal animation you found online into a Spore's animation that fits for most multi legged models?

While there are many ways I can approach this, I chose to use the Blender hip bone to drive the Spore Creature Frame XY translation and Z rotation, and the other animations will be adjusted to animate only in reference of that creature frame bone. This last part is difficult because the math is quite complex. But luckily, the Bone Constraints in blender has an option to use frame of reference.

What I did was making multiple dummy bones (green - because they have bone constraints) that animate similar to the absolute position of the model, but only in reference of the creature frame.

The bone constraints look like this (example: left feet):

Now, in order to export my animation, I choose the convention of animating the front legs with the -flags 0x2 in order to allow them to be more expressive and normal, while the hind legs don't have that so they will adapt to the creature's frame. And if you put the animation channel of the front legs before the hind legs, it will be used as the default when your creature only has 2 legs.

And the result is this:

As you can see, it's a lot better, but still tend to jerk a bit. This I think is because I attribute all of the Z rotation to the Creature Frame. While likely what happened in vanilla animation, the Creature Frame is only attributed to large changes/ low update frequency animation, while the root and other bones is in charged of smaller changes/rapid animations, but I haven't figured out how to do that yet.

Note: I've also used this technique to adapt the camera motion as well, and while it looks relatively similar to the original camera I imported, it jerk quite a bit because of the jerking of the body.

Ooookay, yesterday I said that I might explain the lore behind my Spore captain's story... so here it goes. This is him at the beginning by the way:

Why is he a cell? What's going on? Well let's just say that he's a little bit older than any other alpferd. Or show I say he's mind and memories? Because as I played through Spore, I imagined that the creature we played as always remembered it's previous lives. So the captain isn't immortal but he gets reincarnated every time.

He doesn't know why it happens. Almost no one believes him and they just think he's going crazy. And that's how creature stage passes. Only his packmates want to be anywhere near close to him. And they still think that he's a bit weird. It's weird when he talks about something he shouldn't even know happened.

But he carries on. He feels like he's on a mission to lead his species to greatness. Years pass and he manages to become the chieftain of his new tribe, and allies most of the other tribes (it's more complicated than just that, but I'll talk about it eventually). And finally in the civilization stage, he manages to peacefully unite the whole world (well, as peacefully as possible...).

After all that, he becomes one of two captains of their planet's main spaceship (Yes, there's two of them, but I'll talk about it some other day. But it's related to the fact that I played Spore with my brother).

Buuut, he doesn't really have a name. Well he does but there's just so many of them. Like thousands or milions of them! But I'll eventually give him a name that he uses in the space stage.

I feel a little silly after writing all of that. If anyone is interested by my horse-bugs then I'll happily respond to questions. It'll even help me develop them more. Believe me i'm extremely attached to them for whatever reason, and I really like to come up with new stuff for them.

I think the next things I'll tackle are their clothes and armor. I'll figure out how it all works and stuff. And I'll draw the two captains! And also explain the stages in more detail because this is just a "quick" summary. Why is it so fun to just think of full lore for creatures you made in a 15 year old game?

I am still yet to learn their names, but that comes in due time. I was given a hint, but I can't solve it yet. I'm too afraid to share it in case it was meant for only me.

I've felt my past lives knocking at my door, reminding me of who I once was. The trail of karma behind my life force has no particular pattern. Some lives were rewards, others punishments. She is only ever fair. I hope I continue to learn more about the person I was. My ego hopes that I may have been someone important at some point, but I don't know yet.

For now, I am simply Saint Lucille.

More lore about Gage that no one asked for

His parents are Gaen Colton and Deena Colton. They had three children; Ishale [eldest, girl] Gage, Zak [youngest, boy]. They are (as of 0BBY) 25, 21, & 19, respectively.

Their family was never really wealthy, and both Gaen and Deena worked to provide for them.

Ishale is the overachiever of the family and her parents were always very proud of her. Zak, being the baby of the family was always doted on and given as much as they could give. Gage fell somewhere in the middle and while his parents loved all their children equally and fiercely, he was caught in the middle. Which in some ways suited him as it allowed him to fly under the radar a bit.

at 18, Isha applied to join CorSec which, at the time was heavily integrated with The Galactic Empire. Her parents voiced their concerns for her safety but Isha insisted. After completing her training, she joined the force as an officer. Meanwhile, Zak was the first of their family to apply to university, he studied engineering.

Isha siding with the Empire strained her relationship with her family, particularly with Gage who had seen how much Corellia and it's brother worlds had been struggling under it's rule, making life difficult for people like their parents. He considered it a betrayal of their family to support the Empire but Isha had countered that she had been using the money she earned to help support their parents who were struggling to pay for Zak's tuition.

The tension between Ishale and Gage would break when CorSec conducted a sting operation against Black Sun and Isha almost arrested Gage. She let him go only out of respect for her parents but made Gage swear to leave Corellia or she would turn him in. This event kick started his journey around the galaxy, which began in 1 BBY.

After this, Ishale quickly became a lieutenant. She was later offered a chance to join the Imperial Military as part of the military police. She accepted and would go on to be headhunted to join the ISB by the year 1 ABY.

Zak would go to graduate from university and was hired by Kuat Drive Yards. Gage had wanted to return to Corellia for his brother's graduation, but the threat of running into Ishale kept him away. A choice that Gage would regret making, and which hurt Zak slightly.
