Ohio State Rep. Gary Click has been a prominent figure in the national push to legislate against transgender rights. As the lead author of Ohio’s gender-affirming care ban, Click sparked one of the state’s most high-profile political battles when Republican Gov. Mike DeWine vetoed the measure, triggering a legislative showdown. Beyond Ohio, Click has convened strategy sessions with lawmakers from other states, advising them on how to advance similar anti-trans bills. A pastor by profession, he has repeatedly insisted his legislative efforts are not religiously motivated. But a Twitter post he made yesterday—likening transgender people to the devil—is the latest to cast serious doubt on that claim. “Trans Jesus? He’s been around for a while. His name is Lucifer. He “identified” as the Most High. FYI, it didn’t work out,” Click posted, followed by a paragraph from the bible about the fall of Lucifer.

Rep. Click’s latest remarks are part of a well-documented pattern of religiously charged attacks on transgender people. Earlier in 2024, videos surfaced showing him promoting faith-based conversion therapy to his congregation, claiming he has “counseled” LGBTQ+ individuals and “helped them overcome that before.” In the same recordings, he describes transgender people as “straying from God’s plan” and frames their existence as evidence of a “crumbling of society” brought on by “Satan.” Despite the overtly religious nature of these statements, Click continues to insist that his legislative agenda is not motivated by religious animus toward transgender people. Rep. Gary Click has become a central architect of the anti-transgender legislative movement. In 2024, he authored House Bill 68, which not only banned gender-affirming care for trans youth but also barred transgender athletes from competing in sports—legislation that triggered a political standoff with Republican Gov. Mike DeWine. When DeWine vetoed the bill, Click rallied GOP lawmakers to override the decision and enact it into law. Not long after, in a strategy call with state legislators across the country, Click laid out the long-term Republican agenda: ending gender-affirming care for everyone. When one lawmaker asked how to achieve the “endgame” of banning such care even for adults, Click replied, “We have to take one bite at a time, do it incrementally. Anti-transgender rhetoric this extreme has backfired on Republican lawmakers before. In Florida, one state representative likened transgender people to “demons, mutants, and imps”—language that helped sink the state’s ban in federal court temporarily. In his ruling, the judge found the law was rooted in religious animus, writing: “There has long been, and still is, substantial bigotry directed at transgender individuals. Common experience confirms this, as does a Florida legislator’s remarkable reference to transgender witnesses at a committee hearing as ‘mutants’ and ‘demons.’” Typically, lawmakers behind these bills take pains to downplay or obscure such religious motivations—aware that overt bigotry can undermine their legal defenses.

The wave of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation sweeping the United States is not rooted in science or public health—it is driven by a well-funded network of religious fundamentalists seeking to impose Christian nationalist ideals on public policy.

Hi Pia, so I keep thinking about how it's been mentioned that a lot of people think Faber is in love with Gary when they first meet him, and it got me thinking about Gary/Faber. Do you think that could be a possibility or that they could work out, and would you ever consider writing it?

Faber was never in love with Gary, and sees him a lot more as a father figure.

I actually think he would feel it was far too incestuous to even like, attempt to see Gary that way, so I don't think - at least in my imagination - it would ever work out. I definitely wouldn't consider writing it (and never have, honestly), because they're too 'dysfunctional father + dysfunctional son' for me.

Earlier this year, representatives from Ohio and Michigan were caught in a recorded conversation detailing their plan to end transition "for everyone" by curtailing transgender rights "one bite at a time… incrementally." On Wednesday evening, Ohio Republicans appeared to take the next step in that plan by passing a bathroom ban for transgender youth and adults in schools and colleges, sneaking it into a bill that had already passed the Senate on dual enrollment for students who wish to earn college credits while in high school. If the Senate concurs and the governor signs the bill into law, Ohio will become only the seventh state with restrictions targeted at transgender adults in bathrooms in the United States. The bill, originally penned as House Bill 183, covers K-12 schools and colleges. It would bar all such institutions from allowing transgender people to use the bathroom of their gender identity. Additionally, it prohibits these institutions from maintaining multi-occupancy all-gender restrooms. The provisions could have a huge impact on transgender students in the state, as many schools do not have widely available gender-neutral restrooms.

“Please, don’t support a world where I have to use the restroom in a parking garage instead of the one that I sit right next to while studying, where my girlfriend’s trans coworkers have to leave the building they work in at night just to relieve themselves, or where students at my old high school have to go across a busy intersection just to pee,” said Cam Ogden in a testimony on the bill earlier this year, highlighting that separate gender-neutral restrooms are rarely equal in availability or circumstance.

The bill appears laser-targeted at making life more difficult for transgender people in the state, which may align with Republican plans to end transition "for everyone" in Ohio. Earlier this year, Representative Gary Click, who was responsible for the state’s gender-affirming care ban which was blocked in court, was caught in an audio segment with other Republican legislators explaining plans to ban transition "for everyone.” In that meeting, he stated that any such plan needs to be done "one bite at a time… incrementally." While legislators in that meeting were discussing gender-affirming care specifically, Click connected the bathroom ban with his belief that simply being transgender is "a lie” during last night’s hearing. He also inaccurately claimed that transitioning increases depression and anxiety. In reality, studies show that transitioning alleviates depression and anxiety for transgender people.

Ohio Republicans snuck an anti-trans bathroom bill into a dual enrollment bill that would bar multi-gender restrooms and require trans people using bathrooms in K-12 schools and colleges to use facilities aligned with the gender assigned at birth.

the beanbean and mushroom kingdoms have an extremely close relationship that’s rather old, and as such the births of both heirs were highly celebrated by both families.

here, peasley is roughly 1 year older than peach, and the betrothal between the two was set up very early so the two do not remember their first meeting as they were infants at the time. but still, they visited peach many times before her debutante.

peach’s parents died in a horrific incident i still haven’t detailed when she was around 3-4, which did result in queen bean reaching out more often as peach grew older to offer additional guidance and support :]

but back to peasley and peach, they were thick as thieves and peasley introduced her to fencing! toadsworth wasn’t a fan at first but eventually relented (whatever endears her to peasley, plus any experience with a weapon could come in handy if the mushroom kingdom were to ever leave the peacful era). she’s quite adept in both forms, but prefers to fence in human form. it isn’t something she practices often in current day but it’s something she treasures the memories of alongside trying his bean pillow and learning about beanbean allies and his travels :]

though, as they got older, the two became more aware of their betrothal and what would follow, but things weren’t clicking so they decided to experiment a little (read: they kissed and neither of them liked it. sad!) but neither have brought up calling anything off as both are quite fine with something contractual if it came down to it (but peach would call it off if peasley asked)

at peach’s debutante, they danced together first as a show of the kingdom relationship, and when the first attack/kidnapping happens, the beanbean kingdom offered aid and refuge (little fungitown)

re: her appearance and peasley—she initially meets the beanbean family in toad form, but as she got older this became rarer as experience (and her self image) became priority. peasley makes sure to praise her toad form’s beauty when he sees it, and when mario does come into the picture is of the firm opinion alongside daisy that he does not deserve her if he doesn’t like her true form. on most days she agrees with him

as for superstar saga, he still arrives to the mushroom kingdom ahead of time and toadette volunteers to take peach’s place instead of birdo (the effect is later undone before peach arrives in the beanbean kingdom)

post superstar saga, the two meet (peach crownless) to discuss their love interests, and their betrothal is officially called off. consequent meetings with the beanbean kingdom are held in her toad form :]
