Okay. So. My introductory Visual C# class.
The professor for that class was Alice. Alice was the person who spoke in the introductory video and the person who we were supposed to email if we had any issues.
But all of the assignments, lectures, and quizzes were written and delivered by Bob. On the youtube channel "Bob's programming academy." The quizzes included Bob's name, like "if you do X will it return the string ProfessorBob, Professor, Bob, or Professor.Bob?"
This class was really frustrating for me because it was structured in such a way that you could easily pass the class with zero knowledge of the subject - it was totally based on quizzes that you could take an unlimited number of times and we *had* weekly programming assignments but they weren't graded so there was no incentive to do them (and look, if I wanted to teach myself programming with no incentives I could fail for several years to do that on my own, I don't need to pay fifty bucks a unit for that; the reason I am in a *class* and am not self-taught is because I need external motivation. That's why I sought out a class).
Also when there *was* a problem with an instruction that was unclear in one of the videos for the assignments, or if I thought I'd done something correctly that was very much incorrect, it wasn't Alice who had created the instructions, it was Bob - in 2017 no less - and I didn't really feel like I could ask Alice for help with an ungraded assignment that she hadn't written.
So. Now. My Python class.
Today is the first day of class. Professor is Charles.
I go to the mandatory attendance quiz and it is word-for-word the same mandatory attendance quiz as the C# class, down to the final question "what is your personal email address so I can keep in contact with you after the semester?"
I look at the syllabus.
Class grade is based on quizzes. We have assignments but none of them are graded. There's no textbook, just a series of videos from Professor Bob's Programming Academy.
So I'd been toying with staying at this school and trying to take more CS classes instead of going to another school, just to try to keep my records easier to manage, but since it seems like that *ENTIRE DEPARTMENT* is five Professor Bobs in a trenchcoat, I will probably be going somewhere else (and once again trying to force myself to do projects that I already know are *good for me to do* but *useless for the class and a massive time suck*)
I should drop this class. I should drop this class and apply for the other school so that I can start taking classes there in the spring because if I take this class and then go into the object oriented programming class in the spring and it's another professor bob sock puppet and I end up taking twelve units of programming classes where all I learn is how to google answers in a short time frame (something I already know how to do thanks) I am going to fucking lose it.
Also, again: I have a Bachelor's Degree. I spent five years at a community college when I was getting that degree. I took probably a dozen online classes starting in 2005 and going until 2011 in the process of getting that degree.
THIS bullshit, this "I'm your professor but actually I'm not and all the materials were created by someone else in the department or came directly from the textbook publisher and there is no writing and there are no assignments everything is multiple choice quizzes that are automatically graded" is *dogshit.*
This is NOT how online classes worked back in my day, not even online math classes, and as much as I know adjuncts are getting fucked over by academia in general, this isn't something that these professors should be getting paid as much as they are to do. Alice checked whether or not students turned in a hello world assignment and gave a pass/fail grades for three discussion boards that were responses to youtube videos. Nothing else in the class required her input. If this is the level of instruction that students are getting then the class is already automated and the students shouldn't have to pay for it.
This is crap. This is an incredible level of crap.

he once thought you weren't the most interested in school or academics in general like most people he met, but he was proven wrong when you two became seatmates–he realized you actually had an amazing grasp of the lessons and wasn't just another pretty face at school; you had a beautiful face and brain.
he goes to you for help when he struggles to understand the lesson, but he hardly understands when you explain it in the most 'you' way possible, which is kind of explained through more onomatopoeias, made-up words, and a lot of stuttering since you're unsure how to explain it but know it's done 😭😭😭
"what i just... slip you the answers during the quiz?" you offered with a bright smile as miles looked at you with a raised eyebrow. "that won't be necessary, you'll get in trouble." he said as he tried to process the notes he took down, but you slid him a piece of folded up paper and began humming to yourself as you looked away from him. he opened the paper, and there, it contained extensive notes you took and compiled; and the best part was, he understood most of it better. he looked at you as you looked back at him with a grin.
"that help comes at a cost though." you said slyly as you sat back in your chair. "okay, name your price." miles said as your stomach grumbled. "how about you treat me to lunch, that'd be a great and fair exchange." you said as you got off your seat as miles shrugged and followed you. "you sure just lunch will pay it all off, or..." "if you're willing to pay a higher price, what about you take me on a date after school?" you offered with a grin as miles got a bit taken aback by your request, though... he wasn't opposed.
when he sees you dozing off in class, he always tries to wake you before the teacher realizes or catches you sleeping, but you always get caught and wake up on time when the teacher calls on you. luckily, since all this comes easy to you, you didn't really have a problem answering the questions, you just needed the question repeated to you and you answer quickly.
miles......... has never met anyone as amazing as you, like getting out of a 5 minute nap and immediately having the braincells and energy to solve advanced physics and math problems? he's falling in love with you and being blown away by you every damn time.
if you begin to ramble to him on stuff related to what you guys are being taught, he'd listen to you, it might prove to be helpful in the long run. this was the instance where he discovered you were a complete and total nerd, and his dorky ass loved you all for it.
sometimes, you stare at miles' braids and just get so deep in thought about how nice his hair looks, what it looks like when it's undone, and if you could one day maybe braid his hair.
"what are you staring at...?" he asks you with an awkward voice as you continue staring at his braids. "pretty hair you got." you said as you kept staring at them. miles instinctively wrapped the end of it around his finger and shrugged. "it's not that good, it's... it's alright." "oh, now, don't be modest--it's beautiful." you beamed as you smiled at him and went back to the worksheets you were doing before your eyes landed on miles' braids. "...thanks." he murmured as he went back to his own worksheets, trying to hide the flustered expression he had on right now. he thought about your comment the whole day and was so elated about it internally.
he doesn't flex your beauty, wealth, athletic prowess or anything--he flexes how unique you are. he NEVER shuts up about you to ganke, like even if he doesn't sound so excited, ganke can tell you're all miles can think about.
miles loves how, despite being airheaded and a little bit dazed at times, you're so amazing and insightful, so helpful and smart that he looks up to you so much.
"ganke, i honestly don't know how they're so... cool, like--" miles went on and on as ganke 'listened' to him as he played video games. "no wonder you think they're out of your league." ganke quipped as miles looked at him with a slight pout. "well thanks for reminding me of the hard truth, not that i don't think about it..." miles murmured as he laid back on the bed. ganke shrugged. "if you're so adamant about knowing whether or not they'd like you, why don't you just up and tell them?" he suggested, which made miles perk up and accidentally hit his forehead on the bottom of the top bunk bed.
"ow, and, wait, that... i can't do that." miles said with a pained expression as ganke opened the ice box they had and threw him a plastic bottle to ease the swelling on his forehead. "hey, the worst they can say is 'no'." ganke said, deadpanned, as miles groaned. "i can think of worst things they could say..." miles muttered as he thought of what would happen if he were to admit his feelings towards you, feelings he can't even beging to name.
when he confessed to you, he was honestly struggling to word it out, and seeing you gaze into his eyes without knowing if you understood or even liked what he was saying killed him inside.
"so, i... i like you, okay?" he finally muttered, looking down at his shoes and back up at you, who still had the same, sleepy-dazed face as usual. miles bit the inside of his cheek and got all sheepish, thinking he was a fool for believing you could really like him back. "...i like you, too." you said with a big grin. miles' eyes widened as his mouth hung open for a second, and soon, he spoke. "r-really?" you nodded. "yeah, you're my buddy, buddies like each other, no?" you said with a sleepy voice as miles felt his whole world crumble. did he just get friendzoned?
miles shook his head. "i meant... romantically, there, romantically, i like you." he cleared up, hoping you understood what he meant. you clapped your hands together once as you finally realized what he meant. "ohhhhh, then i like you, too, still." you said as you grinned again, this time, with a sweeter warmth filling your smile and cheeks. miles blinked a few times and stuttered before he made out the words, "you're serious? you understood what i... meant though, right? for real this time...?" he tried making sure so as not to make a fool out of himself, but all the confirmation he needed was when you walked over and kissed his cheek. "i'm serious, miles." you said with a mischievous smirk and held his hand. you were always the bold type, and miles admired you for that; he just didn't realize how much he loved that bolder personality of yours. "a-awesome." miles murmured, trying not to show much of his excitement right now and play it cool.
you giggled and interlocked fingers with miles, which he was not expecting, but he didn't dare to pull away. "so... wanna get something to eat?" you offered miles as he nodded, squeezing your hand that was in his. "sure." he said as he felt even more flustered, like he was melting in your touch as you led him to a good restaurant you knew. not only did miles just get a partner, he's on his first date with them. man, did he love you and your airheaded, genius self <3

Rosalie was leaning to the mirror, to see if her make-up is alright, when someone knocked on the door.
"A second!" she quickly straightened up and fixed her curled hair and walked to the door. Behind them stood John.
"Rosie, may we talk for a moment?" he asked and walked in before she could say anything
Rosie. He always called me that since he miscalled me Rosaline. He wasn't the first or the last to misspell my name, but it seems it touched his ego somehow. Many interviewers later on in my life wanted to call my just Rosie too, but I always built distance with them. I think it's rather understandable that I don't want person who asks me noisy questions to call me sweetly. Especially since Michael likes this diminutive. What I still remember is him saying: 'Here, roses for my Rosie', when giving me a huge bouquet of roses. I think I still have one of them dried.
"About?" she closed the door behind him, frowning.
"I have a vision." he started, taking a seat on the small table, pushing to the side Rosalie's cup of coffee and some hair cosmetics. "To make the scene better, but wanted to ask you first."
"Then go on, ask." she picked up the cup and drank some coffee.
"Do you mind a kiss?"
Luckily she quickly swallowed and only then started coughing. John was really good at surprising her, but this time it hit different.
Of course I didn't mind. I had a crush on Michael, after all, I was fifteen when 'Thriller' aired. I remember spending my pocket money on the vinyl.You know what? I will open my soul completely to you: I skipped school to buy a poster, because I heard from my friend that in the shop that her friend's father works there will be some. Well, I didn't pass the math pop quiz the next day, but to this day I think it was worth it.
If a fifteen year old me heard that she would be able to kiss not the poster, but the man she had on it, she would either laugh or pass out.
Well, but she certainly wouldn't be happy to hear what will be happening between her and her manager.
"Excuse me? I mean-" she stuttered out. A few moments later, when surprise disappeared, she did everything not to show that she actually didn't mind at all. "Did you speak with Michael?"
"Ladies first."
What she didn't know was that... John didn't come up with this idea himself. No longer than a dozen minutes before John knocked on the door of Rosalie's changing room, he spoke with Michael - or rather he spoke and Michael was whispering.
Michael asked him, if he were to take Rosalie to a date, where it would be. It wasn't the most discreet way to admit he liked Rosalie and would like to have something more with her. John's answer was rather direct: 'Michael, just say what you want from me'. When it comes to Michael... Well, he was still rather shy about it: 'Nothing, just... She's nice, I'd like to go out with her, but dunno what she'd like... You think she would enjoy Disneyland?'.
Then something happened that the King of Pop surely didn't expect, but after knowing John for so long, should: 'Give me a minute, you'll thank me later'.
Of course he tried to stop him. Giggling awkwardly he grabbed his arm, but John kept on assuring him that everything is alright and will be perfect, he just has to trust him and not make a scene.
"I trust professionals, if that's your vision..." she put the cup back down, her hand was shaking a bit, but she hoped he didn't see it. "Yeah, sure."
It wouldn't be the first time when she was to kiss someone, outside or for a video. But towards those people she had no hard feelings, surely had no crush. To kiss the Michael Jackson... And have it on the video and be able to watch it over and over again...
I was never so happy that I brushed my teeth.
"Perfect." John smiled, got up from the table and hugged her briefly, before leaving the room.
Just as the doors closed, Rosalie checked her breath. She didn't feel like eating anything after what happened yesterday and brushed her teeth in the morning, but still reached for the mint. Better be sure. But then other thoughts came... What if he's gonna think too much, smelling that she prepared herself? But come on, knowing she's to kiss him, she cannot let her breath be bad. It's rather obvious, she would beg the ground to swallow her if she kissed him with a bad breath.
Well, until I was angry and ate some garlic just for this one purpose.
It was no easy moment for her, when she was standing with her back against the wall, tapping tights with her fingers and waiting for everything to be ready to start filming. Her heart was already beating fast, but started to even faster, when she saw him approaching her.
"Don't stress out, it's just another one of John's ideas. Not like it's something extraordinary..." Michael said. Ironically, while telling her to not be stressed, he looked stressed himself.
"Me? Stressed?" she even scoffed, folding arms across the chest, so she would stop tapping her thighs. "I have no shame in me."
I think at that point it was a lie, but after launching 'Scandalous' in 1991... No, I have no shame at this point.
"How's Lady?" he asked an out of topic question, probably to turn her thoughts to a different direction. And his too, as he almost attempted to rip his hair off after John left to speak with Rosalie. But it seemed that the talk went well.
There he is now, standing in front of her, trying to look cool, hoping not to blush and that his breath is good after quickly grabbing a mint when John was away. And there she is, a beautiful woman he was too shy to just ask out. Maybe now is the time? No, it would be too suspicious... After, after they shoot the scene. The mood will be lighter, there will be some adrenaline, perfect moment-
No, that's even worse. How could he ask her out just after a non-committal kiss? It would be weird and she would quickly figure out he's up to something. And whereshould he invite her? Or rather - where he can invite her so they can have at least some privacy? His house is the most obvious answer, but she was there many times already, nothing new. Restaurant sounds a bit... pathetic, and visibly a date. Theatre or cinema don't sound bad, but there isn't much occasion to talk. Well, he would most like to go to Disneyland... But is she gonna like it? At the same time it wouldn't look so much like a date, so maybe it's a good idea?
"She's... Well. Like always. A little chaos, but lovely chaos. Three days ago she knocked down a flowerpot and was whole in the soil. And she's white, you know. So..." she sighed, but smirked a bit at the memory. "I had to wash her, and surprisingly she enjoyed it. At first she was fighting, yes, but when I got into the tub with her, she calmed down. And now when I take a bath she's scratching the doors to let her in and I have no choice. I guess I no longer have any privacy." they both chuckled as she finished the story.
Actually, yesterday when Rosie was taking a bath, she was scrubbing her body with a sponge so hard that at first she didn't even hear Lady's scratching doors. Probably her soft cries also drowned it out a bit.
She looked up into his eyes, realising how close they're actually standing. Not like they never were close, they hugged quite often after all. But it was different, felt different. She was about to feel his lips on hers, maybe his hand would cup her cheek. In her head 'The Way You Make Me Feel' and her own song about acting like a girl next to this one boy, were playing alternately, instead of the song that was supposed to be in the background when they kiss.
You may believe me or not, but while listening to 'The Way You Make Me Feel' at home I was imagining I'm the girl Michael is chasing and singing too. It might have looked a bit weird. Lady just sat on the couch and looked at me as If doing something very weird, that's why I got this impression.
Actually, I was playing along to his music videos quite often. Sometimes mimicking his moves, sometimes playing some other role and - obviously - singing. I even bought a fedora to be more realistic, but it remained well hidden in my wardrobe as If it was a murder weapon or something.
Oh, and I'm about to embarrass myself, but as I said I have no shame, so I may tell you... Once, perfectly on the bit I hit the table leg with the little finger and let out - I think - the best 'ow!' of my life.
Also, she felt safe next to him. It was so different in comparison to how she acted when Billy was around - and she herself wasn't even aware of the small gestures she did. Like taking a little step away from him and towards Michael. Like fidgeting fingers or playing with the hem of clothes. Like holding breath for a short moment, or slight shiver, or running away with a gaze.
Now all those bad memories and negative thoughts were away, because she was with him. Because he would never hurt her. He is a true gentleman. Such a good change, to feel safe and be free of worries. Through her mind even went a wish, that it could last forever. It was so much better to be on set with him than anywhere else with Billy.
I should have fired him the moment he made a move on me. But I let him cow me.
"No, she just loves you." he said with a chuckle.
"Just like she loved you fedora."
"But she definitely didn't like my pants." he joked, taking another little step closer. "And by the way, I'm still finding white fur in my fedora."
"Sorry?"
She didn't even realise that the music was already in the background, that John shouted something, until she felt Michael's hand on her cheek and just after his lips on hers.
It was so... so good. He smelled mint, same with taste. His lips were soft, almost just like his feather-like touch, as if he was afraid he may hurt her. It was just a short moment, mere seconds, yet she daydreamed like it was hours. She had to hold back, gripping her skirt from the side where there was no camera, to not seek for his lips as he moved away.
"Come on, Mike, I give you a girl looking like a million dollars and you are so dispassionate?"said Johnafter the shot. Oh, I felt pretty hot. "Grab her leg, show some interest. Hey!" he snapped his fingers. "You too Rosie, or did you forget how to move?"
I think we did this scene like five times. All I know is that by the last shot Michael held my leg under the knee and stood so close, that I felt his body on mine and I was afraid I might start sweating. Especially because his other hand held my waist. And what about me? One arm over his neck and another gripping on the hair as If I was holding for my dear life. Well, my heart surely did.
In particular, when I saw the recorded scene and the day of launching that music video.
And I'll add something you probably know, If you're interested in me enough to read this book, but I'll write it anyway: in the first of many special editions of the album the frame of us kissing passionately became the cover. It sold out in a day.

² BECOMING AN ACADEMIC ACHIEVER (And Maintaining It) ✿
First of all, have you ever come to wonder how a certain individual's succession came to be?
How were they able to rise on top, eventually catching everyone's attention and receiving all the wealth and glory you could ever wish to be bestowed to yourself. Of course, a lot of people already had answers to such an obvious question. They would say, "he's naturally capable." "he's naturally talented." "it's the GENES." or even, "it's a wealthy privilege." People would often connect an individual's succession with the natural order of things, which is admittedly a fact, but does that also imply that anyone who isn't born with exceptional privileges already tailing after them cannot succeed? I do not think so.
In the matters of academics, which is mostly our primary stepping stone to success, that definitely isn't the case as well. There are several ways to prosper in school, and graduate as an academic achiever, even if you started as a student who was typically greeted with a glaringly number of 75 percent on your report card.
And that is to PERSEVERE.
Cliché, no? Oh, the number of times we've seen this word literally everywhere. But fret not, because the word "persevere" is a generic term. Persevering, conventionally, is an act of pushing through no matter the hurdles you come across. As a student aiming to become one of the academic achievers, persevering is a powerful kind of mindset which allows you to resort to any appropriate means in order to succeed in your goal.
Persevering is the the positivity — the confidence you instill in your head, thinking that everything will be fine. Regardless of the difficulty of the subject. Regardless of your brain's incapability of concentrating, and inserting complicated terms, definitions or formulas in your head for a long of time. Regardless of these frustrating hurdles, you're still capable enough of searching for other ways to deal with your own weakness.
For example:
You will start reviewing your notes as soon as you woke up in the morning in preparation for today's quiz or performance task.
You will start listening carefully to class, taking notes, searching Google to further comprehend the topic.
You will start implementing abstinence on yourself, locking one of the most distracting applications off your home screen, and then turning on the 'Do Not Disturb' mode so that the chats from your friends or the notifications from your favorite personality posting their new content would not disturb you.
You will also start forcing yourself — hypnotizing your brain that Math and Science is indeed A PIECE OF CAKE.
That is perseverance.
But is that all? After all the difficulties you experienced, the hard work, the number of times you prayed, you finally managed to earn yourself a majority of 90+ percent grade in your report card, resulting to an average of 90 percent and you finally got to be one of the academic achievers in your class. Now what? How do we maintain this now?
The simple answer to that, naturally, is to MAINTAIN. An entrepreneur becoming a billionaire after a decade of hardwork, or a singer finally gaining fame won't just stop after that and idle away as they sat on their new, glimmering, golden throne. They will try to MAINTAIN. But how exactly? Rinse and repeat.
After all the success you earned, you cannot start labeling yourself as someone "rich" or "intelligent" or even "iconic". You must not develop the thought that everything will stay, and will always do, because it does not, on the other hand, instantly labeling yourself as such will never bring anything good for you. Be humble.
You will eventually thrist, if you stop filling the drum with water. You will eventually starve, if you stop planting crops on your garden. It happens.
You must do everything again — everything you've done — before you arrived at this point, and develop the habit of working hard to maintain.

How do you make personality quizzes? I adore your questions and results and been wondering how do you make them work.
ummm you know how in maths class they would ask you 'how did you solve this?' and you have absolutely no fucking clue? yeah
most important thing is that i have a theme that i a. know stuff about and b. have ideas/inspiration about.
e.g. greek gods, a topic i know a fair bit about and am very passionate about is an easy one for me.
i like to try and write results first (but i don't always), pick a tone and go with it. funny/sad/surreal etc. if doing a character quiz or whatever that's easier cause you've got set results, you just need to decide what they mean to you first. e.g. zeus is always presented as like the evil one but to me he's a loser ceo who has way too much responsibility and too many chaotic relatives. so write something to that effect. repeat.
it's harder when you're doing something a bit nebulous. for my what are you the god of quizzes.. that took some time. you just got to let creativity strike i guess?
questions are usually easier. i generally don't stick to the theme the entire time, i think it's fun to mix things up. it's especially fun to play with people's expectations. you can spend ten questions asking people their favourite films and still come away with a decent enough understanding of them to tell them something fun about themselves. people like to be surprised
but again the main advice is just, be creative/be inspired. don't force the questions, i think my worst quizzes are the ones where i've just asked stuff for the sake of having a question. it hasn't told me anything new about the person, it hasn't amused them, it hasn't taught them anything. so yeah cut if you're just going through the motions.
also try to break convention where you can, the entire reason i started making quizzes was because i would always take greek god quizzes and get SO PISSED OFF. they all have the same questions

do you more value LOVE or LOGIC?
so do not write a quiz where a person who understands the topic can easily game their way into getting the desired answer. even if someone isn't trying to manipulate their result they're exactly aware of what you're thinking. it's dull and uninteresting. write questions about things you know, if all you know is embroidery ask them what their favourite stitch is, if you're a geologist what's their favourite rock, if you like music then what's the best genre. as long as you're interested they should be too
sorry i know most of that was what NOT to do. but like i said at the beginning, i sort of sit down, zone out for a few hours, and find myself with something mostly finished.

7th and 8th grade math. mrs. haas. bitch.
she hated me because i don't think the way she thought.
she would always take half points off my tests and quizzes because i forgot to put an equals sign in front of the answer or some other bullshit like that.
the desks in her classroom were arranged into groups of 4 (called pods), and she would pit us against each other. she would give the class a problem, and each pod would send a representative to the board to solve it. the fastest person would get a point for their pod. students could also earn points by answering questions correctly in class when called on. of course, she didn't always award points to students who did these things. she only gave them to students she liked. her favorites were very clear. at each test, she would award +3% to the final score of each member of the winning pod. it was a very, very strong incentive.
she was very particular about the way her students' notebooks were kept. they were to be kept in pencil, with notes on the right-hand pages, and graded and corrected quizzes folded in half and glued onto the left-hand pages. at least once a trimester, she would collect our notebooks and grade them. if there was anything written in pen, if a quiz or test was missing, if the notes were too messy for her liking, points would be taken away. that grade was, if i'm remembering correctly, at least 25% of our final grade in the class.
in my 2 years taking her classes, my pod never won. a classmate of mine, who happened to despise me as well, was a favorite of mrs. haas's. her pod won about 80% of the time. most of that remaining 20% were times she was in the same pod as me.
in 8th grade, students who were doing very well in the advanced class were given the opportunity to take the next level math class at one of the local high schools. the students who were chosen for this program had their first period at the high school, and then came back to our school for the rest of the day. this is soooooooo cool if you're in 8th grade.
a little bit of backstory here. i am a twin. we are both very good at math, and school in general. we went to a small private school. each teacher taught at least 2 different grades and/or subjects. mrs. haas taught all math classes for 7th and 8th graders. my only way out of her classes was to get into that advanced math program at the high school. so my sister and i took summer classes in algebra to make damn sure we were ready for the next level class.
when the announcement of who was selected for the honor of the advanced class at the high school, neither my name nor my sister's were on the list. she didn't hate my sister. but we were a package deal. so she punished both of us.
it was well established at my school that mrs. haas looked like a llama. it was whispered in hallways, in the backs of classrooms, on the playgrounds and the fields. one day, early in my 7th grade year, someone carved a drawing of her as a llama into the girls' bathroom door. rumor has it she ran out crying. i wish i had been there to see it.

I don’t know what’s happening in schools, but I really hope that there’s conversations about students using ai.
School is punishing, pushing kids through subjects at breakneck speeds and expecting them to retain the information that they’ve been overloaded with in such a short time.
It’s not healthy to be overworked. (There’s so much more I can say on just this, honestly.) From personal experience, it’s a lot. Math on its own can be a nightmare to understand, but when those assignments rattled out daily are paired with oh, let’s say… crafting two presentations for other classes and studying for a quiz, it can easily become a daunting task.
And being under that much pressure every day for about ten months for however many years of middle/high school a student goes through- it’s rough! So is it really any wonder that when the system refuses to ease up, they turn to something that will automatically complete the task for them?
We never really discussed ai when I was in school, but that’s likely because it hadn’t spread like a wildfire disease yet. My last year in school is when ai really started to rear up, chat gpt spitting out elaborate answers to any question, even capable of writing stories.
The problem with the use of ai is how much energy it takes to generate things, the fact that you CANNOT take anything it says as concrete, and that relying on ai to find everything for you makes it difficult to find information on your own. I’m sure the list goes on.
So now that I’ve said that, here’s something I’ve noticed lately about the internet!
• Google is literally shoving ai in your face as the first result whenever you look up anything.
Most of us are used to Google being a scheming evil bastard company, but you know who isn’t??? Kids who don’t know better! They cannot discern whether what the ai generated result says is truth or not. They simply accept it, take in what they read as truth.
Ai was not talked about when I was in school, but it should be. Kids, students, even adults, we all need to have a conversation.
Don’t let ai tell you what the truth is, because ai doesn’t know what the truth is either.

Thank you for this response. You really articulated what I was trying to get across in... What frankly was a pretty off-the-cuff post I didn't expect many folks to see.
If I regret anything about it, it's including the A grade. It was true, but it does come across as boasting; I could have phrased it better to get across my point.
Because frankly and honestly: I am naturally a good writer. Even at that age, I was. A good portion of that was practice, but it was also talent. We've all got natural talent somewhere or other, and mine lies in writing.
And I absolutely do not want the takeaway from this to be "speed writing a last minute essay works if you have natural talent, but if you don't, there's no point. Might as well use ChatGPT."
What I didn't include in that was all my failures. Cuz I had failures. There was one chemistry quiz I studied for week after week, a teacher kept re-assigning me, but I just couldn't remember the various ion configurations to his satisfaction. Years later, there were organic chemistry compounds I similarly struggled to internalise. Lots of tear-filled studying nights.
Mathematics. Ugh, mathematics. I got a D grade at a midterm exam in Year 10, enough that it risked completely flunking my overall grade score. It terrified me.
For the next six months or so, every Saturday morning, for 2 hours, I went to a math tutor hall, and just did math exam questions. I hated it. It was a unique combination of boring and stressful.
... But after all that work, I did, to my amazement, bring my mathematics grade to an A for my final exam.
Generative AI, to my knowledge, can't really produce answers to these things the same way it can with writing an essay (though I suspect it would try if you ask). So students don't really have chatgpt as an option to speedrun those.
But I'll say now: if such a speedrun option had existed when I was a student, I would have been sorely tempted by it. Sorely.
And that would have been a mistake. Because while I'll never really have any natural talent in chemistry or mathematics, I do have some hard-won skills in it. And I use those skills in my day-to-day life, both professional and personal, all the time, in ways both direct and indirect.
I'm not saying that our school systems are perfect. God, they are not. I stopped being a teacher in PART they were so flawed, that I could see it. I didn't want to be assigning kindergarten students six textbooks of homework per week. We've got some fucked up perverse incentives going at every level, and I can't BLAME students for seeing this, and baulking, and revolting.
But I'm not saying this for the sake of the system. I'm saying this for the sake of you, and your growth.
The only way to build the muscle is to lift the weights.
"what did students do before chatgpt?" well one time i forgot i had a history essay due at my 10am class the morning of so over the course of my 30 minute bus ride to school i awkwardly used by backpack as a desk, sped wrote the essay, and got an A on it.
six months later i re-read the essay prior to the final exam, went 'ohhhh yeah i remember this', got a question on that topic, and aced it.
point being that actually doing the work is how you learn the material and internalize it. ChatGPT can give you a short cut but it won't build you the the muscles.
