hi babe!! here's a short and hopefully easy to understand tutorial for the text i use in my posts ᥫ᭡

also, just a little disclaimer: the images on this post might not be visible because they exceed the limit of 10 images per post on mobile app. should be fine on a laptop or pc though!!

okay firstly, make sure you're using a laptop and open your post in one tab and in a seperate tab open jsfiddle.

you should be able to see this coding somewhere on your screen:

you're gonna replace the two hex-codes (highlighted text) with whichever colours you'd like. to do a gradient, like this, the two codes will be different, but i like to do a solid colour like this so my codes will be the same.

the hex code i use for the baby pink is D2A3BE, or you can use your own. if you don't have a hex code you like yet, you can use the colour picker on this site to find one!

just copy and paste the hex codes into the code so it looks like this:

make sure it looks exactly like this. you still need all the spaces, quotations and other code. only change the hex codes.

in the top left of your screen, there should be a "run" button, and when you press it, the colours in the bottom right should change from the default ones to the ones you chose.

next, you're going to open your tumblr post in your first tab.

your post will start like this. you'll go to the settings button in the top right (circled) and change the post from rich text to HTML

this will enable coding on the post. you'll still have 'preview' where it will look normal and you can still type and edit the post as you usually would.

once you've typed something it will show it in the HTML option just in a different way:

you want to go to the preview page and make sure you've got the text looking exactly as you want it (bold, italic, small, etc.). also note that colours look especially good and show up well when the text is bold. i set mine to bold as an example.

when you switch to HTML it will look something like it does above.

next, you'll copy the text between all the coding prompts (e.g. <p><b> and <b><p>). only copy the text you want to be pink or another colour!! don't highlight any of the coding. then paste it this top box on jsfiddle so it looks like this:

press "run" on the right, and it will spit out a line of code in the second box that will look something like this:

you're gonna copy that line of code and switch over to your tumblr tab. on your HTML version of your post, find the text you're changing and highlight it. then paste the code into that spot. make sure not to highlight any of the surrounding code - only the text you've written and want to change.

it will look super weird and long because it's colouring each symbol and letter, if you look closely, each letter of "example text" is separated and surrounded by code. when you switch to preview it will look like this:

for gradient, the process is the exact same, but on jsfiddle, when you're replacing the default hex codes with yours, the second hex code you plug in will be different to the one you start with. for example:

this second colour is C45494 btw!!

to do specific text in a paragraph as if bolding it (which i do in a lot of my posts), you just want to find that text in your HTML post, and copy and paste the specific word/s into your top box on jsfiddle, and then proceed as normal. example:

this tutorial at least medium difficulty. it’s not super complicated, but you do need a basic understanding of html.

i can’t stress this enough as disclaimer you may need to ditch aesthetic formatting and icons. if you know your way around html you’ll know how to keep those but it will be dependant on how comfortable you are with html. this post isn’t a tutorial on html and there are a lot of guides out there and this is long enough.

even if you don’t know how to work around formatting if you follow this step by step you will be able shorten reblogs and reply to threads without clogging the dash and your blog.

i’ll try to make this as concise as possible so i won’t bore you with why it works the way it works, long story short it has to do with tumblr changing the dashboard to be responsive to screen size and forcing the new post editor on mobile browsers (as well as the app)

the new post editor on mobile does not support removing reblogs or html editing, both of which you need in order to trim your post and add the last reply before adding your own. even when you switch the browser view to “desktop mode” tumblr’s responsive design will adapt the regular mobile layout. 

first you’re going to login on a regular mobile browser, whichever you use the most (chrome, safari, opera, etc). i’ll refer to this browser as your main browser, you’re going to use this to edit most things later.

for now just log in there and draft your partner’s reply. don’t bother turning on the desktop mode on this browser, it won’t make a difference. only draft the post (you can draft the post from the tumblr app as well)

next you’re going to download and install the puffin browser (available on android and ios). this is the only browser that i’ve found has a true desktop mode. login here as well and make sure to turn on desktop mode on this browser. 

i’ll refer to puffin as your “trimmer” browser from now on.

open your drafts from the trimmer browser, edit the post, tap lightly on the post until the red x button shows up to remove reblogs. remove the reblogs and save the draft.

now close the trimmer browser and go back to your main browser, in my case it’s chrome. 

here you’ll find that tumblr defaulted to keeping the original first post ever. i don’t really know why it does this but you can remove it the same way you just removed the reblogs.

you’ll notice the layout looks different from the responsive design. this is because you saved the draft from the trimmer browser which forces the true desktop view, saving the post in the regular old text editor format we use on the desktop version. now html editing is supported ! 

here is where you copy and paste your partner’s last reply and add your own. again, how much of their formatting you’ll retain depends on how comfortable you are with html and how much patience you have to replicate their formatting. 

here’s the bare basic html you’ll use for a simple trimmed post:

other useful html tags you can use for simple formatting:

if you really want to include icons you can use the code <figure data-orig-height="ICONHEIGHT" data-orig-width="ICONWIDTH"><img src="ICONURL" data-orig-height=" ICONHEIGHT" data-orig-width=" ICONWIDTH"></figure> 

replace the following as follows:

ICONHEIGHT = the height of your icon in pixels ICONWIDTH = the width of your icon in pixels ICONURL = the url of your icon

for your partner’s icon just copy the url from their reply and to add a new icon of your own on your reply i’d suggest preemptively uploading a bunch of icons to a hidden page on your blog or a drafted post from your computer so later on you can use them from your phone just copying the url the same way.

aaand that’s it! in only a few clicks you’ve successfully trimmed your post. i hope this helps!

I also thought I'd make a quick post going over my experiences and observations using the beta editor, as someone who put off switching for months and months and has now been using it for about a week. If you're putting off making the switch because you're not sure what it will be like, and are worried about committing to a broken editor, this post is for you.

General Observations

Overall, the editor itself really isn't that much different. A few things are in different places, such as blockquotes being under the dropdown and being called indented now, but it's not the buggy, broken mess that I half-expected it to be. A lot of the bugs that various people have reported on have already been fixed by staff. (And you can report bugs or just general complaints to staff! There's a feedback section of their form and they are actively taking user suggestions into account. Just remember to be nice about it.)

Sometimes bold, italics, and small text will act up and not apply correctly. But frankly, those would act up on the legacy editor, too. And if things are being weird, it's fairly easy to select the offending text and just fix it.

Things I Like

By far my favorite feature of the beta editor is the ability to disable reblogs on a post. As someone who runs a roleplay blog for a pretty popular canon character, I've gotten used to typing all of the names L.ike Th/is in order to prevent my posts from showing up in search, and slapping a huge "do not reblog" disclaimer onto everything -- only to have some personal who apparently can't read reblog it anyway. But now I can simply take my OOC posts, headcanons, metas, whatever, and set it so that no one can reblog them.

I love the ability to edit tags without having to completely delete and rewrite them. I've gotten so used to having to redo tags over a single typo that the realization of this the other day left me in shock. You can just click inside the tag and change any of the text that you want.

The new content label system is pretty good. You can clearly designate a post as having mature content, and your followers can choose in settings whether they want to have those flagged posts viewable or not. It's another feature I'd love to see Tumblr expand on, and add some more options to flag a post as, it's a really good start.

The post scheduling system is much more clear than before. You can actually schedule a post and feel confident in the exact date and time that it will go up, unlike the previous system that felt like a wild shot in the dark.

You can add colored text to posts pretty easily. There are a bunch of preset colors, and while I haven't played around with it much, I understand that adding custom colors via HTML is pretty straightforward. It's not a feature I personally use much, but it's neat.

There are also additional font and styling options, like Lucille, Chat, and Quote. Again, not things I use very often, but cool features to have.

Things I Dislike

Tumblr will remember your old tags, but without any capitalization. If your frequently used tags have capitalization and you want them to be consistent, you'll have to retype or paste them in every time.

When you paste an image URL into a post, it will insert the image as before, but include that link below it, with no way to easily remove it. This is an issue for those using gifs or icons with transparency, and simply pasting the image in directly will cause it to display incorrectly. As someone who uses a webpage of my icons when working on threads, I now have to download the icon I want to use and upload it, which is a minor annoyance compared to simply copying the image link and pasting it in.

HP Crack!Fic Fest 2022: Submission Info

SUBMISSIONS ARE DUE ON SEPTEMBER 10, 2022. POSTING WILL BEGIN ON SEPTEMBER 24, 2022.

All participants must be over the age of 18.

Please remember that this fest is all about crack!fic, so every story submitted must feature at least a hint of that idea. As you can see in the definition I left on our rules post, that idea is pretty broad, haha.

However, I want to be clear: you are in no way required to tag your fic as crack!fic (or any variation), either on AO3 or in your header. Throwing it back to the example of my own questionably cracky work on the rules post, I didn't label it that way, but I do know it can be viewed that way. As long as you are capturing the essence of the fun and fancy-freeness of this fest, you are good to go.

We will absolutely be accepting any written form, as crack!fic does tend to lend itself to so many different things. So poetry, letter!fic, texting!fic. We’re not accepting strictly art, but I think comics and meme!fic, etc., would still fall under “writing” - at least in my opinion. So please keep in mind, anything goes!

There are no minimum or maximum word requirements. Everything must be betaed, proof-read, checked, and edited.

Posting will be anonymous, so please don't give the game away by posting anywhere else, or replying to comments, or hinting on your journal until after reveals. Also, because this is an anonymous fest, the piece you submit must be a complete, stand-alone work and can't be based on any of your other works, prequels, sequels, etc.

All submissions will be hosted on AO3, at the HP Crack!Fic Fest collection. Feel free to check it out, but please only post your submissions there yourself if you are 100% sure you know how. One mistake can make the difference between your fic being posted before its time, so if you find yourself unsure of how to do this in any way, please feel free to send everything to the mod email, and I will take care of it.

Headers with a link back to AO3 will be posted here on Tumblr.

PREVIEW OF UPDATES TO COME!!!

Hey so it’s been a while since I posted an update on this thing, but I just did a ton of work so here ya go. (To be honest I lost the motivation to work on more updates after the last time I posted an update... for probably obvious reasons. I mean, real life stuff and pandemic aside. That said, just in case another “misunderstanding” happens... I should probably put a disclaimer or something...)

Full update under the readmore because it’s 4am, I’m incredibly tired and loopy, and a lot of it is probably technical rambling. :D Anyway, enjoy!

If you’ve decided to read on... here we go!

So I just spent the past... I dunno, 4 or 5 days straight working on this (it’ll probably be day 5 or 6 by the time this pops out of the queue. I haven’t slept. It’s very unhealthy, don’t do as I do kiddos!) and this monster of an HTML page/program was like... nearly 4000 lines? Maybe 3900? I managed to clean it up some and get it down to 3600 or so lines, and it also helped that taking the long break between the last update and now really helped me get a fresh perspective on how to more efficiently get things done so I was able to cut out some redundant code/features. It’s actually still not done though (lol). There’s... a lot going on. (Both in the code and in the update!)

As you can see from the preview video (which I made because at this point it was easier than giffing... my poor near-decade-old laptop nearly exploded on me, it can barely handle making a 3-minute video...), the text may be editable in-template and the new style bars are in (which is a new feature!! That the old online generator didn’t have!! Made to make your template generating easier! So no more trying to figure out where to place HTML if you don’t know any!), but admittedly the style bars are not 100% functional yet, I still have to work out some bugs (like bolding/italicicizing/etc. not working on multiple lines, though as you can see in the video you CAN style the whole text area or individual words). Also the very essential feature of uploading your own images is still not in, and the personal data section is... not working right now. ^_^;;;

Still, kinda excited about the style bars, which as you can see are slightly different from the last update. (There’s a highlight color when you hover over them now! I figured that’s an easy way to show it’s interactable.) I maintain that UI design is hard though (it took forever to figure out how to translate the original online generator’s input forms into dropdown menus and such), because while I do like the rows of circle buttons and whatnot going on right now I might actually change it again because I’m not a huge fan of how bulky it looks for some of the smaller editable areas (like the hero name, the hero aptitude box, the quote sections... actually the hero name was supposed to have some style buttons for the strikeout effect and a few others too, but I’m still trying to figure out how to fit them).

Not entirely sold on the help box either. Not sure why? I think it’s the red color. Red was a good color for the button, but not the help box. I’ve always kinda felt like “pale yellow” was the color of “help” so this is throwing me off. Is it just me? Red just doesn’t seem friendly or conductive to helping?? And I’m not totally happy with the positioning either. (Not sure I’m liking that it’s just. In the middle of the page like that? Maybe it needs a shadow or a border or something... it just looks a little off somehow to me? Maybe I need to make it bigger/smaller??) On the plus side, though, the help box is much bigger and more obvious than the tool tips from the original generator.

Right, one last thing before I stop rambling: the style bars currently have buttons for small text, bold, italics, underline, and strikethrough. If you wanted any other font features let me know and I’ll take it into consideration! (I thought about adding a “color” section but honestly I’m not entirely sure how I’d do that... or how many people would use it.) Though that being said, I did have to exclude some font effects from certain areas (as you can see in the video)--like, the strikeout style doesn’t even work on the “manga temple” font (I mean, it DOES, but it’s less of a strikeout and more of an underline) so I just didn’t include it on the bar. So stuff like that might happen if the font effect suggestions don’t work out. (Also more buttons contributes to the bulkiness of the style bar...... again, something I’m working out. Gotta find a way to redesign it, uhg...)

Anyway that’s it for now?? I know it doesn’t seem like much on the front-end of stuff, but I’ve got a list of at least a dozen bugs in these new features/UI alone that need fixing (beyond needing to add image uploading to this new UI and re-implementing save data exports, among other non-debugging stuff I need to do) so it’s... kinda a lot, on the back-end. Still, I hope you enjoyed this preview and didn’t mind my rambling too much!

On the issue of the help box and style bar setup, if yall have any suggestions, I welcome and encourage them!

OVERALL:

the reality tv junkie in me loves this concept of this rp. and, asI look around, this typifies exactly what I love about the genre: characterdevelopment, fast-paced events and, of course, a healthy dose of competition. Ilove your color scheme and your theme. for a contained theme, I found it incrediblyeasy to navigate—which was a real and true blessing. however, I do think that there are still many things to improve, Ithink a little more consistency and editing in your descriptions and overallaesthetic could really elevate your rp and make it more accessible andattractive to prospective members. I also would like to see a change in yourrules, both in policy and in tone. overall, I wish you guys the best of luck.

PLOT:

I really do love the rp idea, but I do think the plot page leavesa little something to be desired. For appless rps, especially ones withoutblurbs on the sidebar, you really do need something that is concise, both eye-catching and attention-grabbing, all the while getting to the point. while the content you have on this page isn’tbad, you have a long-ish block of text that can read a little dry at time.

I’ve taken the liberty of editing your plot to take on a more activetone to show you what I mean. while you have no obligation to use it, you dohave full permission to:

 There is no greater motivation in theworld than money – and nowhere is that more present than in ParadiseIsland, MTV’s new reality television show. Sent to a private island inpairs and forced to compete challenges and tasks set by the producers, contestantsoften find themselves doing things they wouldn’t normally do, all for a chance at$750,000.

Here at Paradise Island, the fun never stops. With 24/7 Streaming, viewers are given a real-time seat to the  drama,the romance and more! While binge-worthyshows are great, the 12 million daily viewers know the truth: they never have to find something new towatch again.

After a rigorous application process, including video essays about why theywould like to be on the show, interviews and even a test challenge was preparedto see which finalists caused the most drama or had the most chemistry, thehundreds of potential applicants were narrowed down to just 40. The producersrandomly assigned each contestant into pairs and, for the duration of the show,these partners were to share a room in the mansion and work together to win thegrand prize. 

But what happens next—will loveblossom? Will greed step in? Witha 1/20 chance of winning the $750,000, most of the contestants will do anything to get their hands onthat money, but there can only be one pair of winners.

Who will be victorious in the first Paradise Island?

Contestants have been sent to aprivate island and must work in pairs for the chance to win a grand jackpot of $750,000w/ additional prizes. We focus on weekly character development tasks &challenges, plotting between members, in-character drama, and. of course- vacation vibes! Applicants are free toapply for a wanted connection partnership or to have one picked at random foryou!

 If you would like to take a crack at it, here’s what I tried to fix.

Have a more ACTIVE TONE

 thisis a purely stylistic choice, but i would suggest varying up sentence structureand utilizing your bold and italic keys a little more as most people in thegenre do.

Try to avoid going on tangents

Inthe beginning, you start with the motivator of money above all and thenimmediately move to love and status, thus weakening the power of your opening

Ialso did not particularly think the tangent about streaming services in thethird paragraph was necessary. Your goal is to emphasize that the show is 24/7—you don’t necessarily have to explain that.

Is it… $750,000 or $750,000+, because both were used. That needsto be clear.

The first thing I always look for is the synopsis at the bottom,but yours is a little bit long. 

Iwould center it as well. You can do this by entering into the html and putting , I think.

Side note: make sure your navigation tab’s blurb matches the one on this page.

I also spotted a couple of grammar errors. Your biggest and mostfrequently repeated error is run-on sentences and a lack of commas.

RULES

bh, your rules page was a hugeturnoff for me. I don’t think it was your intention, but it was very blunt, alittle wordy (ik ik… im legit the most wordy person on earth) and read kind of…rude. A a potential applicant and as a reviewer, I just- I wasn’t feeling itand would likely be very wary of applying because of it.  There are also quite a few run-on sentenceshere, so watch out for that.

I’m not going to rewrite the whole thing, but here are a few specificchanges I would make and alternate wordings to your statements.

 Edits

(++) I would put in a HOW WE RP section and add in the stuffabout the tasks, points and challenges. Because that should not go underinclusivity. I also do not understand how it works and I need much moreexplanation. I can guess, of course, but I shouldn’t have to. You need toclearly outline how this rp will be run and how tasks will be delegated and pointswill be awarded. Vaguely stating that there will be challenges and points andwhatever will not work.

(++) Your muses section is very confusing. Especially the agebut also the diversity part. I understand that you feel strongly about this,but I brought it up to some friends and many of them were just as confused as Iwas. I read your FAQ and things did not get any clearer. If I were you, I wouldsimply say “all muses and fcs must be older than 25. Please aim to make yourcharacter’s age believable with your faceclaim.”. And that, “to encouragediversity, if you have more than one character, at least one must be POC.” Asyou have it, it is very murky and kind of defensive?? almost. Like I reallywant people to be over 25, but I guess they can play 23, but also they canactually be 40 but they can play in their 20s. It’s convoluted and I get alittle frustrated trying to read it. In my opinion, you just have to pick asingle age and go with it.

I feel like your unfollow rule is extremely lenient for one ofthese rps. It may lead most of your members being inactive before they getunfollowed.

Feel free to cause in character drama. However, no OOC drama willbe tolerated !! >>> While in-character drama can be fun, OOCdrama will not be tolerated.

ACCESSIBILITY :

I knowthis sounds like a small thing, but I really am impressed.Container themes are notoriously hard to navigate but I had little to notrouble going through yours. If your rp grows, that muse tab is going to behell to update so I admire your commitment.

My onlycritiques are that

 youneed to finish updating your nav so there are no broken/nonexistent links—whichI’m sure you will do

on your/map page, you have ‘wanted connections’ spliced so both wanted and connectionare links.

I’dmuch rather see a page with all the tags to track than just having them floataround on the navigation. But this is totally up to you to change.

AESTHETIC/GRAPHICS:.

Lovethem. Whoever did them, mostly, did a good job in maintaining the color scheme.My only critique is that I’m not really feeling the headers for, like, the plotpage and the wanted connections…etc. These harsh black borders and script fontsstand out a lot and, while the images are nice, they have a completelydifferent color scheme (dark blue-ish tones to the warm and tropical orange ofthe rest of the theme). I wish they would! Because otherwise, I really do likewhat you have here.

I would edit or remove the first question onyour FAQ.If anyone asks the question, you can say to promote age diversity andthat’s reason enough. As it stands, the question and the answer just makes me confusedand, some of the statements like “actors over 25 have more resources” is justuntrue.

it surprised me that a screen reader wouldn't understand the horizontal rule as I thought that was the preferred web syntax for thematic breaks. I did a bit of googling on the subject and it looks like this isn't universal, since I found a bit on how to make your hr elements not be read by screen readers, lol. (so helpful!)

I'm resistant to the idea that it's better to ditch the horizontal rule altogether in favor of non-standardized individual solutions as suggested above. I believe this to be a fragile and non-optimal approach - it is, in my opinion, too reliant on the quirks of individual software. What is understandable when read by one screenreader might be ignored or mangled by another. "dash dash dash" is a pretty decent audio cue for a scene break! but I'm... not sure that you can necessarily guarantee that that's what the screen reader is going to say when it encounters "---" in the text. I admit I haven't tested this or done more than a small amount of research into it, but from my understanding there's a distinct possibility that some software might parse that as punctuation (since it is) and ignore it. Then you're back where you started with the horizontal rule issue, except now you're not using semantic html either.

I do have a suggestion - it's a little more work than just typing in dashes but it should to the best of my knowledge work with the majority of modern screen readers, while keeping the nice semantic horizontal rule. Here it is:

Use the rich text editor (or whatever method) to insert horizontal rules as described above

Switch to the html editor and copy the entire text of the fic

Paste that into a text editor (NOT a word processor. I like VS Code, though you could probably just use Notepad as well)

Use find-replace to replace all instances of <hr /> with <hr aria-label="dash dash dash" />

Do a little quality-control check to make sure you got all the scene breaks

Copy-paste the edited html back into the html editor and post!

The reason this is so much more likely to work is that the "aria-label" html attribute is designed specifically to work with assistive technology in exactly this sort of situation, so you're working with the accessibility software instead of around it. It also lets you have a lot more freedom in choosing the audio cue you want to use without sacrificing the visual presentation, which is a nice bonus!

(quick disclaimer: I haven't done any testing for this specific use case - I recommend looking up aria-label if you want to verify for yourself that this is a correct usage)

A domain name. This will be your website’s address (Example, wpbeginner.com).

A WordPress hosting account. This is where your website’s files are stored.

You can create your online course with WordPress in less than an hour, and we’ll walk you through every step of the process.

Let’s get started.

Step 1. Setting up Your WordPress Website

There are plenty of website builders that you can use to build your website. However, we always recommend WordPress because it offers you the flexibility and freedom to take your website in any direction you want.

There are two types of WordPress, and often beginners end up confusing the two. First there is WordPress.com which is a hosting service, and then you have the original WordPress.org also known as self-hosted WordPress. See our guide on the difference between WordPress.com vs WordPress.org.

We recommend using WordPress.org because it gives you access to all the WordPress features that you will need.

To start a self hosted WordPress.org website, you will need a domain name ($14.99 / year), WordPress hosting ($7.99 / month), and SSL certificate to accept online payments ($69.99 / year).

Step 2. Install and Setup LearnDash LMS Plugin

LearnDash is the best LMS plugin for WordPress. It is an all-in-one solution with complete course management, lesson plans, quizzes, assignments, course progression, and more.

Now that we’re on the same page, let’s get started with the course setup process.

First, you will need to install and activate the LearnDash plugin. For more details, see our step by step guide on how to install a WordPress plugin.

Upon activation, you need to visit LearnDash LMS » Settings page and click on the LMS License tab to enter your email address and the license key. Once you have entered the information, click on the ‘Update License’ button to store your settings.

Next, you need to switch to the ‘PayPal Settings’ tab. This is where you will enter your PayPal information to receive online payments from your users.

Don’t forget to click on the ‘Save’ button to store your settings.

LearnDash also has Stripe and 2Checkout payment gateways available as Addons. You can install those if you don’t want to use PayPal.

Once you have configured the payment settings, your LearnDash LMS plugin is ready to go, and you can start creating courses.

Step 3. Creating Your First Course

LearnDash makes it super easy to create and manage online courses.

First, you need to visit LearnDash LMS » Courses page and then click on the ‘Add New’ button.

This will bring you to the ‘Add New Course’ screen. You will need to start by providing a title for your course and then adding a detailed description. You can also add course categories / tags, and a featured image also known as course thumbnail.

Below the course description, you will see the course options box. This is where you can set different options for the course including course price and what type of course it is: open, free, closed, buy now, or recurring.

Once you are satisfied with your course options, you can click on the save or publish button to make your course publicly available.

You can click on the preview button to see your course in action.

Note: You will not see the ‘Take This Course’ button if you are viewing the course page while logged in as an administrator in WordPress. We recommend opening an incognito browser window or log out to preview the course page.

Step 4. Adding Lessons to Your Course

Now that you have created your first course. It’s time to add lessons to the course. LearnDash allows you to create highly interactive lessons and then add them to your online course.

You can add a lesson by visiting LearnDash LMS » Lessons page and then click on the ‘Add New’ button at the top.

First you need to provide a title for your lesson and then start adding lesson content. You can add text, images, embed videos, and more.

Below the lesson editor box, you will find lesson options. Here you can add the lesson to a course by selecting the course you created earlier from ‘Associated Course’ drop down box.

You can also choose whether this lesson requires submission of assignments, lesson timer, lesson progression, and more.

Once you are satisfied with the lesson, you can click on the publish button to save your lesson.

Your lesson will now automatically appear on the course page below the course details. You can repeat the process to add more lessons to your course.

You can also break down an individual lesson into topics. Simply go to LearnDash LMS » Topics page and click on the ‘Add New’ button to add a topic.

Creating a topic is similar to creating a lesson. Instead of associating it to a course, you will just need to associate it to a lesson.

Step 5. Adding Quizzes and Assignments to Your Online Course

LearnDash comes fully equipped with dynamic quizzes and assignments. This allows you to make your online course a dynamic and engaging experience for your students.

You can make the quizzes and assignments required for your users before they can progress to the next lesson or course. You can also review assignments and give feedback to students.

Creating Quizzes in LearnDash

To add a quiz, you need to visit LearnDash » Quizzes page and click on the Add New button.

First you will need to provide a title and description for your quiz. After that you need to scroll down to ‘Quiz’ box and associate your quiz to a course, lesson, or topic.

The default quiz settings would work for most cases, but you can customize the settings as needed from the advanced quiz settings area.

Once you are done, click on the save or publish button to save your quiz. You will now notice the new option to add questions to your quiz.

You need to switch to the ‘Questions’ tab and then click on ‘Add Question’ button.

This will bring you to the ‘Add new question’ screen. LearnDash allows you to create different type of questions (multiple choice, true or false, fill in the blank, essay, free choice, etc).

You can add multiple answers for your question, add the correct answer, choose message to display for correct or incorrect answers, and more.

Don’t forget to click on the save button before you move onto the next section.

Depending on your settings, your quiz would appear on your lesson, topic, or the course page.

Enable Assignments in LearnDash

You can easily add assignments by editing a lesson and going to the lesson options area. You need to check the box next to upload assignment option.

After that, you can provide the assignment instructions in your lesson. At the end of the lesson, users will see an option to upload their assignment.

Once users have uploaded their assignments, you can view them by visiting LearnDash LMS » Assignments page.

Here you can edit assignments, approve, or give comments on submitted assignments.

Step 6. Giving Certificates on Course Completion

LearnDash allows you to automatically give certificates upon completion of a course. However, creating a certificate in LearnDash requires some basic knowledge of HTML.

First, you will need a certificate image file. This is basically the background image you want to use for your certificates.

You can find certificate templates on free image creating websites like Canva. Once you find a template you like, simply delete all text from it and download it to your computer.

Next, you need to visit LearnDash LMS » Certificates page and click on the ‘Add New’ button.

On the add new certificate screen, you need to set the certificate background image as featured image and click on the save button to reload the page.

You will now see your certificate template in the background of the visual editor. You can start adding text you want to be displayed on the certificate.

To insert user’s name in the certificate, click on the LearnDash icon in the editor to insert the username shortcode.

Once you are satisfied with the certificate, you need to publish it.

Next, you need to edit the quiz you added to your course lesson. In the Quiz options box, you need to associate your certificate to the completion of the quiz.

You can now save your quiz settings.

Users who complete the course and pass the quiz will see the option to print their certificate.
