🍫; What would other characters in your familiar f/o's source think of you and your f/o?

(out of character) Most of the UA staff are rather thrown off by Nezu adopting a kid, especially one raised by the Hero Commission. He's never been a compassionate mouse, he can't handle being touched in any way, and truthfully his energy for children start and end on a professional level.

All Might is probably the only one who understands the guilt Nezu carries for leaving Hawks behind when he left the Hero Commission, and that this, taking one of their child soldiers out of that life, is his way of easing his conscious at least a little. He's also the only one who supports him in this, playing a sort of co-parent to me. More like a grandfather I suppose. He's the main one to give physical affection, support, and encouragement. Though he certainly shows favoritism to Midoriya, he tries to be there for all his students, including me, especially sense I have no one else in my corner.

Most of Class 1-A and 1-B react to Nezu legally adopting me with the same amount of confusion as the teacher's did. It just seems so out of character for their aloof principal. The rumor that we're closer related than just adopted father/son spread and a lot of 1-A pestered me for background information on Nezu for a while until Bakugo made them back off.

Randomly complimenting him and using pickup lines.

Even before your relationship with Haruka, you knew he was so, so, so easy to fluster. His blushing face quickly became one of your favourite features in the man. You thought he didn't like it in the beginning always yelling and awkwardly telling you not to embarrass him. Surprisingly, he didn't mind when you complimented him, even seeking out your praises whenever the possibility for one arrived.

Everyone in Bofurin was aware, that when you were near your boyfriend his face would be red most of the time. You just knew what to do to make him this way. Were you bad for using it for your entertainment? Maybe. But he loved you either way so..

Another minute passed before his cheeks and ears burned red and he spluttered some things you couldn't understand turning away from you. You, however, laughed at his reaction and grabbed his hand before pulling him towards the school.

"Your hair and eyes have been always bi-colour and you will always be-mine." You said to him once, while you walked to school.

"What?" He looked at you confused trying to understand what you meant.

You sighed deeply before turning to him.

"You know bi-colour, be-mine." You pointed first at his hair and then at you.

Haruka wasn't aware that it was the first of many pick-up lines you'd use on him just to get a reaction, you so loved.

The next one was when he'd just beat down some guys, while you were watching from the sidelines. You cheered him on throughout the fight and as the last guy fell down you bounced up to him.

"Oh wow, that last punch was something." You complimented trying to imitate your boyfriend.

He puffed out his chest his face slightly pink from the fight and, mostly, the praise. The smile on your face turned to a smirk as you brought your finger to your lips humming in thought.

"Is your dad a boxer?" You asked him your grin starting to show as you knew what you'd say next, while he wasn't aware what he got himself into.

"What no! You know well enough that-"

"Because you're a knockout!" You cut him off quickly sending a wink and finger guns in his direction.

Haruka knew your intentions pretty well when it came to these random compliments and pick-up lines. He thought that with time passing he would get used to them and they wouldn't have that kind of effect on him anymore. Oh how wrong he was.

He stared at you his face reddening but he was too stunned to speak.

"Ah, you prefer knight in shining armour more, huh?" You teased him and instantly tried to evade the light slaps he sent into your arm to make you stop.

He ran after you yelling for you to stop while you ran away laughing and arguing you would never, because you knew he secretly loved it.

Collecting Haruka from Bofurin you gave him some snacks you bought on your way. He thanked you but when he saw you looking left and right carefully, he followed your gaze before asking.

"What is it?"

"Be careful the police may be on to you." You whispered to him and he looked at you appalled.

"Why? I didn't do shit."

"For stealing my heart." You said swiftly kissing his cheek.

His face was once again bright red and a frown appeared on his face.

He just couldn't believe that instead of him handling the situations like that better it was you who got better at acting and tricking him.

"You're an idiot." He said munching on the chocolate you gave him, pretty much still flustered by you.

"But I'm your idiot." Your words made him choke on the thing and you helped him before erupting into belly laughter.

Haruka was still blushing no matter how many times you exposed him to your affectionate words. He finally came to realize that you just had that effect on him and he didn't mind it that much anymore.

Time to rull up my sleeves, cause I did say I was gonna do one of those right? Back when I got annoyed that all I found was girl dad this girl dad that and I got tired of all the typical gendering going on in dad fics.

Ryusei Shidou

Girl dad in the most chaotic way possible. Tiaras coexist with bows and arrows as a princess fights off an invasion. Every doll and plushie has a tattoo made either with a sharpie or from a patch attached with hot glue. Every tea time is a mafia family meeting that always involves an assassination plot. And the barbies live very intense lives that inevitably delve into wrestling like storylines where each one has a gimmick, a long standing feud, and a clear thirst for blood.

Chaos may not be the best thing to keep an organized home, but it's good for mental development. And much like a kid, Shidou also thrives in creative chaos. He isn't the best at practical things, especially the ones involving routine and quiet time, but he has got his uses. Very good at wasting his daughter's energy until she drops straight into a deep sleep. His antics are also good at convincing her to eat pretty much anything. And of course, great at entertaining her so you can take a break.

Oliver Aiku

Boy dad but like he really doesn't care, he'd be giving the same extremely affectionate, and even a bit clingy, treatment to his kid no matter the gender - sugary sweet nicknames included. Probably heard people saying he coddles his son too much, treating him like a princess, but Oliver is good at playing deaf. Tho, that kid gonna have to fight for the right to have his feet touching the ground, cause dad wants to carry his offspring everywhere. Sure to raise a boy as clingy and openly affectionate as him.

Those reflexes honed for football are quite good at catching a kid before an ugly fall. And he's actually good at the general everyday stuff, surprisingly patient too. Takes a genuine interest in the things his son likes, so when the boy shows sudden interest in colorful nail polish, he'll show up to a match with badly painted soft purple nails. Likes sleeping on the floor with his boy, when asked why the floor and not the bed he brings up the old man excuse of "the floor is good for my back".

Reo Mikage

Girl dad and he was ready for a little princess, but what he got was more of a cave dwelling gremlin. He was expecting frilly dresses and tea time but he gets a little girl who likes bugs, playing in the mud and digging things from the ground. It hits him as a surprise but he adapts to that, and as much as he isn't very excited for the cleanup afterward, he is always eager to entertain his girl's odd interests. If buying dinosaur fossils weren't such a legal can of worms he'd buy one just to bury it for her to dig up.

If he wasn't convinced to go to therapy before, now is the moment to convince him. Just gotta say he should do it not to become like his dad and he's gonna be booking the appointment fast. Will be reading child pedagogy books and shit like that to make sure he can be a good and understanding dad. Really just trying to kill his family's trauma conga line at himself - wants his daughter to trust and count on him in the way he never could with his dad.

Michael Kaiser

Boy dad but to the gentlest, sweetest of souls, a little boy who seems to have absolutely nothing in common with his dad, aside from some physical traits. It at the same time shocks and scares him, because the world out there is not kind to sweet people. But while the boy is at home, Kaiser can keep him safe. It does frustrate him a little bit when he tries to get his son into football but the boy is more into art than sports, but he learns to move past that. Truth is, he wanted the boy to mirror his traits a bit more, so this is a humbling experience.

That poor rose tattoo of his does not see a day of peace after his son learned to color. Tho, Kaiser gets used to the shaky new roses drawn on his skin fair enough. And he actually considers getting a full tattoo of just lineart and not colors just to let the boy color in. He's not the most patient so he has a bit of a hard time getting used to the whole parenting thing, but he does try his best. Also, whenever he takes his son out somewhere he makes their clothes match in color scheme.

(Very) random personal headcannons, how I view Daryl, your opinion may be different.

Will let you use tweezers on his monobrow but only if you swear not to tell a single soul.

He likes to lay his head in your lap and have you gently trace his eyebrows with your finger tips, it makes him so sleepy.

Mostly enjoyed dad rock before the outbreak but would never admit to liking lady gaga.

He’s super uncomfortable with PDA, the most he’ll do in public is rub your shoulders or ruffle your hair. If you kiss him in front of others and they see, it actually kinda upsets him since he would’ve told you he doesn’t like it, he saves that part of himself for only you and only in private.

That being said, in your own home he can be sort of clingy but not in a needy way, more of a “I don’t want you out of my sight” way.

He’s more touchy and affectionate in private, hugs from behind, squeezing your hips.

He knows you well enough that if you sit between his legs on the floor whilst he’s on the couch it means you want your hair played with, and he will do it without you having to ask and won’t stop until you ask him to.

He gets grumpy about the fact that dog always chooses you over him for cuddles on the couch or in bed.

He doesn’t mind having his shirt off in front of you, it’s not his favourite thing but he appreciates that you make no big fuss about it considering you know the reasons why he hasn’t always been comfortable with doing that.

We all know he’s got daddy issues but his mommy issues are strong.

Daryl used to get panic attacks sometimes before the outbreak, more often when he was younger and in school but he’d sometimes get them randomly when out and about with Merle. Merle was hard minded but he knew how to calm Daryl down and make sure he was alright. Merle was a good brother.

The panic attacks came as a result from all the stress he got from his father and losing his mother as a child and pretty much just not having a stable life.

He rarely got them after the outbreak, in a way the new world was a blessing in disguise for Daryl as he became his own person.

But he’s still get them sometimes, usually there was no particular reason for them but stress and a build up of emotions that he holds in too much. You’ve come to learn that when these happen there’s no telling what he needs, sometimes he needs help calming down and other times he just needs to be left alone.

He doesn’t talk about his feeling with people but he knows that you much prefer to talk things through and you want to know how he’s doing so he tries to tell you when he’s not feeling good but he always waits until he can’t keep it in anymore.

This results in him crying in front of you which he hates but you’re so good at comforting him, he lets you hold him and he hide his face in your shoulder.

He’ll pretend nothing happened once he’s okay.

❤️‍🔥he likes his dick sucked. That’s it. He’s not too vocal during sex, maybe a few grunts but when you suck him off that’s when he whimpers and moans although he’s still quiet. He’s just a quiet guy.

Boromir Relationship Headcanons

Boromir x F!Reader, headcanons are both SFW & NSFW (so no minors, please!). This is based on the movie version of Boromir, so if anything contradicts the books, I apologise 🙏

SFW Headcanons

- Boromir is quite the romantic. He’s never really been in love before you, so it catches him by surprise how strongly he feels for you. Like he finds himself randomly thinking about you while he’s training and ends up all flustered and distracted. He never saw himself getting married either - he’d always been too busy defending Gondor - but once he falls for you there’s no doubt in his mind that he wants you to be his wife.

- Even if you’re of a proper status to be Boromir’s wife, there’s a good chance that Denethor won’t think you’re good enough for his favourite son. But Boromir will not relent in his desire to marry you, even if that means defying his father and marrying you in secret. There’s a good chance that Denethor will get past it eventually anyway, because in his eyes Boromir can really do no wrong.

- He is incredibly physically affectionate - he loves giving hugs, and cuddling, and picking you up and carrying you. He loves being the big spoon, wrapping his arms around you and holding you close to him while he buries his face in your hair. Even if he’s had the most stressful day imaginable, holding you in his arms makes all of the stress and bad things in the world seem to melt away, even if only temporarily.

- Boromir hates being away from you, though obviously his duty to Gondor means he often has to leave for battle, sometimes even for long campaigns. But he keeps you on his mind always, and he fights in your name just as much as he fights for his country and his people.

- One of the ways to make Boromir melt is to show him gentleness and tenderness. Like you tending to his wounds after a battle? You washing his hair? He’s going to fall even more in love with you and look at you with pure adoration in his eyes, just feeling so lucky to have married the most wonderful woman in Middle Earth.

- I think he’d want to have a big family, maybe four or five kids, and a mix of daughters and sons! Of course if you’re not comfortable with that, he’ll defer to your choice - he understands that when it comes to making a child, he’s really got the easy job. If you do end up having children, he’d be such a sweet and attentive father - just imagine him playing with your kids the way he did with Merry and Pippin in Fellowship 🥹 - and I like to think that he would encourage his daughters’ interests just as much as his sons’! He’s definitely making sure not to play favourites at all either, because he saw how much that hurt Faramir when they were growing up and to this day.

- (I saw an imagine post talking about dad Boromir where he plays knights with his daughters and it solidified girldad!Boromir as my favourite headcanon, but I’m having trouble finding it again - if anyone knows the post I’m talking about please send me a link, I’ll love you forever ❤️🙏)

NSFW Headcanons

- Boromir is a very attentive lover, and so so handsy. This man will be touching you all over while you’re making love, particularly focusing on your hips, breasts, and thighs. I think he’d love it if you’re on the thicker side, because it makes it even more satisfying for him to touch you.

- He can be a massive tease - especially if you have particular sweet spots that he knows how to exploit in the best way possible. When you moan loudly, he’ll look at you with the biggest grin on his face as he asks you if you’re enjoying yourself. Goku may have failed Gohan in some ways as a father, but Piccolo was never and will never be Gohan's Daddy

So when I was younger, I enjoyed a handful of fics centred on Piccolo and Gohan's relationship. I love how much Piccolo came to care for Gohan and it was nice to see Dad!Piccolo every now and then...but Dad!Piccolo can't ever measure up to fics where Goku is a great dad. I understand why some people may believe Piccolo is Gohan's true dad but I don't agree, especially now as an adult woman with my father now dead.

Disclaimer: I am basing this off my experience watching Dragonball, DBZ, DBGT and most of the DBZ/GT movies. I have not watched DBS nor will I ever. That series can screw itself.

Piccolo's responsibility in destroying Gohan's childhood

Piccolo is the one who thrust Gohan into the world of fighting and world-ending battles. He kidnapped Gohan and left Gohan to fend for himself for months. I will argue that Piccolo started Gohan's warrior path on a traumatic note and that's partly why Gohan does not gravitate towards fighting as he grows older. Yes, Piccolo changed but the damage can not be undone.

Difference in species

This may look superficial at first glance but it is significant as you look into it. Namekians are radically different from humans/saiyans physically, emotionally and sexually. That means that Piccolo can not advise Gohan on various aspects of his life as he grows older, especially during puberty. Piccolo can't teach him to shave. Piccolo can't give him the sex talk and talk to him about girls. Piccolo can't help Gohan with his friendships. Piccolo can't relate to whatever saiyan or human urge Gohan may experience. A father is supposed to model a good man for his kids and teach his son to be one. Piccolo can't offer that to Gohan, unfortunately.

Emotional distance

I see Gohan as a very emotional and affectionate person. You see this when he interacts with Goku, Goten and Videl. Piccolo is more reserved and closed off. Usually when Piccolo and Gohan interact, there's always some kind of distance between them. However, there are a few times when Piccolo will rest his hand on Gohan's head or shoulder when he feels extremely proud like after the Cell games. However, I don't think this would have been enough from a father figure for Gohan. When Gohan is crying after Goku's sacrifice, it's Krillin who steps up and comforts Gohan. When the Z fighters go to the lookout after Gohan's victory, it's Yamcha who carries Gohan. This does not mean Piccolo does not care for Gohan! I am just saying that Gohan likes physical forms of affection too, but that's not Piccolo's love language.

Fighting is all they have in common

We don't see Piccolo and Gohan have any extensive scenes together outside the context of battles and fighting. What exactly do they do together for fun? What do they talk about? In the movies, we see kid Gohan being silly around Piccolo and Piccolo tolerating him, but that hardly counts. I get the vibe from the series that Gohan's visits to Piccolo are brief and they don't have much small talk. With Goku, we see Gohan and him enjoy pastimes together like fishing, bathing and eating. In the lead-up to the Cell games, we see them reminisce about Gohan's childhood and have fun as a family at Gohan's birthday party. Why wasn't Piccolo there?

Piccolo is not involved wholistically in Gohan's life

Piccolo only really exists and functions in the fighting realm of Gohan's life. This is why their relationship does not feel as close as Gohan grows older and starts his career and family. Piccolo hardly expresses any interest in the other facets of Gohan's life. I don't even recall Piccolo interacting at all with Pan or Videl at the end of Z or GT. He is not close with Chi Chi and Goten, Gohan's family. I think Piccolo is closer to the Son family in Super but I don't care. Compare this with Goku who encourages Gohan to study, teases him about Videl and spends time with Pan.

Conclusion: Goku is Gohan's daddy and Piccolo can't fill that gap.

This does not take away the fact that Piccolo protected Gohan and loved him in his own way. Sacrificing himself for Gohan multiple times. Piccolo was the one who understood Gohan's mindset during the Cell games (probably because he was the one who beat baby Gohan into a fighter and saw his timidness up close vs. Goku who came back to life and only saw hero Gohan being badass all the time) and was the first Z fighter to step in during Gohan's fight against Cell. But Piccolo is better labelled as a friend or mentor to Gohan. Maybe uncle or big brother. Goku is Gohan's father, Gohan sees Goku as his daddy, and Piccolo will never fill that role for Gohan.

(these answers will be about 2k3 mikey unless stated otherwise because he's ~my~ mikey. i apologise for the length of these answers, it seems i had a lot to say?! i also apologise for how much i bring up fast forward here, it seems that i'm fixated on it really hard right now.)

8. what’s your favorite dynamic of him and any other character? what makes it your favorite?

It's so hard to pick just one!!

i thought a lot about this, but i think splinter? he's exasperated that his son can be a bit lazy and distracted from ninja training, but still had him specialise in nunchaku, showing that he believes in his ability to master a difficult weapon. splinter surrendering in the battle nexus so that mikey could advance was so heartwarming and honestly makes me emotional to remember. in the first turtle titan episode even though he doesn't understand why mikey admires superheroes so much he acknowledges that his intentions are noble and he needs to follow the path truest to his heart. veering a little more into headcanon territory, i do think that being the most openly affectionate, baby mikey was a master manipulator in terms of melting his rat dad's heart. i can picture him climbing onto splinter's lap every time he sits down and being the most reluctant to go down for naps. and in a particular au i'm cultivating that delves more into mikey's potential romantic life, i think he would go to his father for advice. splinter may not be well versed in romance outside of his soap operas, but he will always be here for his kids when they need him.

(this, of course, makes me very bitter over the flanderisation of their relationship in fast forward. ff!splinter might as well walk around wearing a shirt that says "i hate my lazy video game addicted son" and it breaks my heart.)

tbh i think a lot of people love mikey and have analysed him in just about every way possible and what i end up saying is probably not the most groundbreaking take, but here is something that i've thought about a fair bit but haven't really seen from anyone else?

in fast forward, mikey is depressed. it is handled by the narrative about as delicately as a bull in a china shop, but it's there.

5 seasons of being bombarded with trauma-inducing storylines culminates in temporarily dying, going full dragon avatar mode to defeat the demon shredder and then finally they are able to relax, breathe easy, process some of these emotions - but noooo, instead they get ripped out of their timeline and dropped 100 years in the future with no way home and the studio execs wouldnt let them rightfully lose their shit at cody so instead we see the turtles bottle that rage and slowly descend into semi-flanderised madness. /lh

mikey in particular becomes very sensitive to rejection (see: losing his goddamn mind and going on an all out offensive against turtle titan ii, after being talked down the first time he raged out, because raph made One Comment about how his successor is better at heroism than he is), prone to emotional outbursts, especially anger (remember that iconic clip of him beating up cops and stealing their cars because they pissed him off?), loses interest in his ninja training, maintains very poor hygiene/living conditions, grows addicted to video games, and in rare moments of vulnerability (namely in graduation day of 2105) he expresses that he sees himself as lazy, unfocused, a 'goofball', and undeserving when it comes to being recognised for his ninja skills like his brothers. my man's self-esteem is in the toilet, he is craving normalcy after years of constantly fighting for his life, and his dopamine is clearly critically low because he is dependent on all the fancy material goods of 2105 to be happy. his method of coping with the difficult emotions being stranded in the future has brought up, while still maintaining the silly funny guy routine that his family expect from him, is to bury himself in VR. and why wouldn't he, when among the uptick in mikey roasts over the course of this season we literally hear splinter say the words "where did i go wrong with that boy?" THOSE WORDS STAY WITH YOU WHEN THEY COME FROM YOUR PARENTS. THEY HURT.

he's very empathetic to leo's own depression in season 4, being the voice of reason at the beginning of samurai tourist when raph is ready to fight him. we also see at several points in seasons 1-5 that his loud ego is a front and he is actually very aware of his shortcomings, especially seen in grudge match. in a different timeline where 2k3 wasn't neutered following insane in the membrane, i do wonder if the turtles would have been able to explore their turbulent feelings regarding the 2105 situation. since mikey and leo are often paired up for adventures in 2k3, it would be an interesting parallel to see leo recognising signs of depression in his brother and helping him, imparting some of ancient one's wisdom (and, in the great year of 2105 where mutants are equal citizens and cody has money to burn, finding him a good cognitive behavioural therapist).

i don't think the writers INTENDED to code mikey as depressed / struggling to cope in season 6 - i think it was a toxic combo of writing more 'mikey is lazy/immature/irresponsible and needs to be taught a lesson' episodes than the usual season average + thinking it was a funny social commentary gag to make him obsessive over video games. but i saw a lot of those traits in myself when i was deep in a depression hole. the show has already told us that the turtles' mental states have been impacted by the ridiculousness they have gone through. why would mikey be any different?

Obanai is relived and joyous when you finally willingly show yourself to him and go up to him. He makes no subtle movements, staying dead still to let you examine him until you proclaim you trust him

Obanai is very soft, harmless and defensive over you post-trust building. He knows just because you like him doesn’t mean, you like every man so he needs to keep you safe. He shields you from the psychotic ones and continues to gift you random cute accessories each day

Uzui Tengen

Yeah. That makes sense, Tengen can fully grasp why you’re afraid of all men, including him. He would have been the same if he didn’t have this career, yet, he wants to help you and give you a home so he gets to work

Tengen thinks the best thing he can do to try build trust is have his wives talk to you as comfort before revealing himself. You are fine around women so if polite, sweet women introduce him, it may tell you that he is a trustworthy being and overtime, it actually does

Tengen has to keep his eccentric excitement and relief hidden with you when you walk over to him yourself. His wives did a excellent job at painting him as a good person, he reaches for your head and asks for permission to pay

Tengen is like a playful protective dad post-trust building. He keeps only openly harmful men away from you and gives you whatever you want, he does spoil you rotten but how else can he heal your broken heart without showing you luxury

Rengoku Kyojuro

Kyojuro feels immense shame and anger at his own sex. You’re afraid of men because they kept hurting you over and over, and he wants to do everything he can to fix that, make it that you’re not afraid of men so you don’t have to suffer

Kyojuro can’t stop all the fear but he can limit it with him. He immediately devises a plan to try win your trust, himself doesn’t talk to you but his little brother Senjuro tries, instead. It’s a bit more successful but each conversation with Senjuro convinces both Rengokus aren’t out to hurt you

Kyojuro’s relief and pride overflows his body when you, with Senjuro, go up to hug him. He can’t bring himself to move at all as he is worried that you’ll run away if he makes a single flinch. Like a helpless infant animal, he is so careful with how he moves

Kyojuro is the most affectionate and doting of the three here. He wants to express his care to you fully, no smoke and mirrors, so your little brain knows he is just here to love and protect you. He avoids the dangerous men in public altogether and lets you talk to women only

I love u sm anon ur so iconic for this bless u 🙌🙌 I love that u saw me publicly slut shaming @butchybats + extending an invite for him to hmu so that I can info dump about armand and u were like omg I can not pass up this opportunity. Ur so real and this made my day. My bad if this is unhelpful or incoherent lmaoo I am just raw dogging this educational experience. For me writing armand has always come very naturally so this is the first time I’m thinking about this in a way I could explain to other ppl. I hope u get smth out of whatever tangent I’m about to embark on and I sincerely thank u bcus I love this and I love talking about army u r indulging tf out of me in the absolute best way. Also quick disclaimer I am going off of book armand, so tho this may be helpful to show fans (esp cuz show armand doesn’t rlly have an established personality yet) it may not specifically apply. Anyways

I understand why Armand would feel like a difficult character to write bcus part of his whole deal is that he is very strange and unknowable. No one knows what Armand’s deal is, nor does he, so how r u as the writer meant to figure that shit out. He is like a void of a person basically (affectionate). He is barely capable of conscious self reflection, most characters don’t rlly know what to make of him and those that claim to r often wrong. So I get it, feels intimidating. But for me breaking down Armand to his essentials puts it into perspective a bit. 

Armand doesn’t really know how to be a person, he is only a Thing when other people are there to give him something to work off of. So he’s a different character depending on who he is interacting with. Armand with Daniel is very different then Armand with Louis, Armand with Lestat is a whole different beast, etc. He is always playing a sort of role, with Daniel he is the boss slash master vampire commanding the mortal. With Louis he is an ancient with the answers Louis has been looking for. But the performance is often cracked, unveiled whether intentionally or not, especially by those Armand loves, so what is beneath that? Well. Kind of a child. Think of a kid in their dad’s shoes. Now imagine the kid is putting on a very deep voice and standing up all straight and professional. Then he trips, and suddenly he starts crying and screaming and yelling for mommy cuz he hurt his knee. That’s Armand, when u get down to it. Like a scary man in a suit who is secretly a little boy on stilts. But wait! There’s more.

Armand is not only an actor, he is also not a very good actor. He’s like those myths about faes replacing human children, very uncanny valley, not rlly a person. So in any given situation, armand is going to be just a little bit off. Just a little odd, a tad wrong. Think of a scenario (it can be sexual you awful heathen, or it could be like, guy is in the grocery store. Or smth) now think of something that would be a little off putting and strange to do in this situation. Chances r this would be in character for armand. I always think of him as something who doesn’t know what it means to be a person, yet is always trying to learn and understand and to pretend, but never really succeeds.

Armand also has conflicting facets of his identity that come into play in different ways and inform how he interacts with different characters. Amadeo is the beginnings of the person that was never able to completely form and grow. So Amadeo is like the normal bits of Armand, the human teenager who’s playful and funny and empathetic, a bit rude, kind of weird but he means well, likes technology. Gives Lestat a light punch on the shoulder when he ruffles his hair, etc. Amadeo rarely plays into sex for Armand, sex is very clinical for him—he approaches sex like an alien. But Amadeo is still there and when Armand is happy or care free some of the unsettlingly oddness goes away, and he seems sort of like a mortal teenager for a moment. The innocence and the moments of childishness are when Armand is most sincere. Though this is fleeting, and he often behaves cold and distant and inhuman. What I like to remember when I write Armand is that he is not unfeeling, tho he pretends to be. He acts unfeeling but it’s a mask, beneath the mask his unfiltered self is extremely feeling and emotional and sensitive. He’s as much of a cry baby as Lestat, he’s just better at hiding it. 

Andrei is also there, but he is much subtler, and he’s more so the embodied longing in armand that never really goes away. There is a need for answers and for knowledge and for guidance in armand always, and that’s Andrei, searching for his God or his family or his home or his culture, that were taken from him and never adequately replaced. Armand clings to purposes and things and people because he never learned how to fill that void left by the loss Andrei experienced, and then again Amadeo experienced due to Marius and the cult. He is the culmination of so many years of a child’s growth being repeatedly stunted by adults with selfish purposes, a child who keeps getting beaten down or molded into smth different by ppl who want to make him into smth new, until he ends up a creature without a concept of who he is at all. So he’s fractured almost, not rlly with a consistent identity since he was never permitted to grow one. Just a culmination of a bunch of identities he took on throughout the years. Im sure this sounds complicated, but the great thing about being a writer with a character like this is he may be a void, but he is also a canvas. Armand is so multifaceted that u could do sm with him and it wouldn’t be ooc

So in simpler terms, a good rule of thumb when writing armand, is to think of him as a guy who is a ball of extreme feeling and pain and joy and emotion that is being masked by a cold demeanor, that is often slightly off, a little wrong, cuz it’s first untrue. He is always trying to find a purpose to fill the void that he is, and he never rlly does for very long. 

So when it comes to portraying this? Lol uhhhh. There are some many layers of armand that exist and it’s up to you to decide which ones u want to portray in ur scenario. Say for example, ur writing a fic where armand and Lestat argue. You have to evaluate Lestat’s affect on armand, his closeness with him, the context, etc, and decide what parts of armand would slip out. If I was writing a fic like this I would think ok. So Lestat is like a trigger button for armand, they hate each other but they love each other, is a lot of big emotions and passion, and Lestat also reminds armand of the most vulnerable parts of himself that he is trying to keep under wraps. So Lestat and armand arguing? Likely armand is going to be cold and distant, but not for long, bcus quickly Lestat will get under his skin and cause him to revert to unmasked emotion ball screaming crying. How about, uh, Daniel and armand go on a fluffy date devils minion era. I’d write armand as odd, strange even, curious and excited but sort of cold and distant in a confusing way. Little slips of sincere childlike joy and emotion come out but they r brief. 

I hope this is making sense lmao.

It’s much easier when writing armand, esp if it’s smth ur not confident in, to write from someone else’s pov. Armand’s pov is a tough one, even for me. It’s not that his language or sentences r strange, it’s just that the way he thinks of the world and himself is so specific and unique that u gotta think a lot to replicate it. 

Armand, especially pre TVA, is nearly incapable of self reflection. He is so dissociated from his own experiences he sees his memories and life in fragments rather then events leading into each other that inform a larger context and “theme”. For example, in devils minion he explains to Daniel that he couldn’t explain what a time of his life “was like” because he can’t conceptualize concepts like that, tho he could tell Daniel if it rained on a specific date, cuz that is smth concrete to him. he just couldn’t identify what smth is like bcus he doesn’t reflect on his emotions and his experiences in a way that would allow him to make a judgement like that. 

He just goes through life and doesn’t look back. This is a hard pov to write from cuz these r basic capabilities a first person narrator must have for a story to make sense lmfao! Armand couldn’t say, “the day was a bad one bcus this happened and I was sad.” Especially not “this experience affected me this way and now I this this and this.” However, if u want to write from Armand’s pov u can integrate these ideas into it while retaining this part of Armand’s character. 

Tho armand can not self reflect, and his way of thinking and experiencing is a very bare bones simplistic way (think of armand saying “my soul hurt” in TVA narration then not explaining lmfao, that’s the extent of his self awareness and abilities to identify his emotions) u can convey complex ideas  through his simplistic approach. Through context clues, symbolism (armand loves symbolism), and word choice + description, it’s cool and possible to convey armand having a moment etc without using ur first person tools to have him self reflect. For example, if I were to write from Armand’s pov were he is having like, a traumatic flashback, instead of writing “the moment forced me to remember insert traumatic time here and my heart raced as it came back to me suddenly, and I felt like I was back there” or whatever, I’d write “flashes of red appaeared b4 my vision like many stabbing knives, and it felt as if I was engulfed in an ocean of red suddenly, unable to escape the waves, the blood, those voices of many pasts” whatever yada yada. Cuz red armand considers synopsis with pain and trauma (he tends to see it b4 his eyes when he’s in pain synesthesia king) ocean reminds him of dying of starvation in the brothel as a kid (he described it as the only thing he payed attention to as he died, the lapping sounds of the water). Past, etc. bad example I hope u get it 😭

U just gotta rlly think for armand pov lol. So if ur nervy about writing armand anyway I recommend starting or practicing with writing from someone else’s perspective about him. Daniel is a very good character to do this with, bcus his perception of armand is relatively accurate and he is a very bluntly descriptive and self reflective character who understands himself and others very well. Lestat is also very self reflective and his perception of armand is pretty easy to write imo lol. If u just write some shit like “armand was beautifully broken, like a discarded doll in an antique shop, and I wished sadly that he’d allow me to repair him.” Then you’ve got it down pretty well lmfao.

When it comes to more specific less big picture stuff, like how to write armand talking or what does armand fuck like Ryan save me from this hell, I recommend reading his scenes a Shit Ton until it’s rlly burned into ur brain like me. I don’t know if I can adequately explain how armand talks, it’s very blunt—he’s very blunt but simultaneously very flowery. Remember he is a guy who is trying to be distant, and doesn’t rlly understand how being normal works, but he also has a vibrant inner life and a shit ton of emotion waiting to boil over beneath the surface. Yah. Lmfao.

My Top Ships in Bleach

A little ramble for purposes of shits and giggles only. Not presented in any particular order. Happy New Year, everyone! Hope 2023 is less shitty :')

1. Kyoraku Shunsui and Ukitake Juushirou

After just raving about these two on my feed it would be an injustice to not talk about this pair - Ukitake and Kyoraku are the old man pair (affectionately) in the Gotei 13, dads to their respective divisions, and uncles to everyone else. In the grand scheme of the Gotei 13 family (Yamamoto insisted, don’t @ me), they’re like the embarrassing uncles who everyone wants to have over for Christmas - after all, they bring presents and joy, and are close enough to your grandparents that they can diffuse practically any situation, what’s not to like? 

Then the dust settles and after the oldest members of the family are gone, they’re the two that age and death are staring in the face. Which is precisely what happens when Yamamoto and Unohana are dead in the TYBW Arc. 

(I mean, technically Zaraki is probably the same age as them, but he hasn’t been in the family [Gotei 13] as long) 

The reason why I like these two so much is because of how close and obviously comfortable with each other they are. Both of them are old and have seen a lot of shit, but they don’t let it deter them - in fact, they take it in stride and use that power to inspire and encourage, rather than to control or abuse. Everyone loves them (one more than the other), but there’s always a mix of admiration, fondness and respect for the two. Sure, Ukitake might be a little embarrassing with his like of stuffing candy in people’s pockets, and Kyoraku might be a little annoying with his constant insistence to flirt with everyone, but I don’t think anyone actually dislikes them. 

And of course, their chemistry with each other. I actually think of them less as a romantic couple and more of a platonic brotherly pair - both works, but at the end of the day they behave like an old married couple who have seen a lot of shit together, and just want to settle down and tell stories by the fire, combing each other’s hair, that sort of schtick, you know? 

(In my in-house brain universe, they live happily ever after after Yamamoto dies. Nothing else happens to them afterwards.) 

2. Shihouin Yoruichi and Urahara Kisuke

(I decided not to use that panel of Yoruichi in her cat-Shunko form. It’s a spoiler and also is a little weird to me) 

Ah yes, the childhood friends to fugitives-on-the-run pair. These two are just so fun in their own little way - if you think about it, both Kisuke and Yoruichi are the only two who could control and actually understand each other. Kisuke, most obviously, when Yoruichi activates her final Shunko form, and Yoruichi, both 110 years ago and in the present - she’s the only one who can tell him what to do and he actually does it.

Now given these two’s carefree and ‘devil may care’ attitudes to life, this obviously comes with a lot of intimacy and deep understanding of each other. And you can tell too - they are very powerful fighters in their own right, but because of this and their life experiences, they don’t trust anyone except each other, and each other’s capabilities. Everyone knows Yoruichi is an amazing fighter and Kisuke an amazing scientist - but when have you actually see Yoruichi letting someone have her back so completely and fully like Urahara Kisuke? 

If you squint closely, you’d realise that they don’t actually trust anyone except themselves. We were witness to this point in Urahara’s life, actually - whether he had innate trust in anyone before we aren’t sure, but when he was arrested in front of Central 46 and rescued by Yoruichi, there was a point where he realises his life was officially at a point of no return. And afterwards, in the main plot, while he forms relationships with a lot of characters - the Karakura gang, most notably - he doesn’t actually trusts them. The Karakura gang are people he uses, for lack of a better word. The Visoreds are a mistake that he needs to atone for, a wrong he needs to make right. His little family of misfits at his shop gives him a resemblance of a family, but one where he’s able to watch fondly from a distance and joins at his convenience. And Yoruichi is the same - she’s a mentor figure to the Karakura gang, and the Gotei 13 are old colleagues who happen to be conveniently placed in the path to what she has to do, and her duty to Soul Society. You can argue Soifon/Sui-Feng is an exception to all this, but she certainly didn’t feel enough love for her to stay in Seireitei - no, she chose Kisuke instead.

And I guess their ability to vibrate on the same (slightly bizarre) frequency with each other is what makes me feral about these two :) 

3. Madarame Ikkaku and Ayasegawa Yumichika

Another childhood friends to military men pair. Even though they’re literally in the 11th, for some reason I just cannot take them seriously. And honestly, I don’t think they take themselves seriously either? I mean, sure, on the battlefield and all they absolutely do, but during the daily tidbits in life they probably just fuck around for more shits and giggles. 

Jokes aside though, these two have the same thing that is slowly becoming a theme in this list - deep trust and understanding of one another. Having spent so much time (and even entering Gotei 13 together) in proximity, I don’t think they can hide much of themselves from one another - not that they actually do, but their relationship feels so natural, and they behave so naturally with each other. Yes, Ikkaku thinks Yumichika is as flamboyant and narcissistic as they come, but he doesn’t care, nor frankly gives an actual shit (I’m also willing to bet that Yumichika is actually the one who gave him that red eyeliner - it’s the only thing he can wrestle that man into, which he thinks is rather unfortunate). Similarly, Yumichika may think Ikkaku is stubborn and doesn’t appreciate beauty, but he literally panics when he thinks Ikkaku is in mortal danger (during that fight with Hisagi, and with Poww). He can throw down everything, even duty, if it means saving Ikkaku. And that dedication?? *Chef’s kiss*

A lot of people also forgot that Yumichika didn’t follow Ikkaku into the 11th Division (because they’re friends, more than friends, etc.) but rather they entered together. Because they’re both bloodthirsty men who wants to fight and die for a living (pun intended). And I think it’s really interesting how Kubo depicted these two despite their shared love of fighting - especially Yumichika, because one would think that a man as narcissistic and prim as himself would wrinkle at the bloodshed. When in fact he’s very much capable of becoming the 11th Division’s 3rd seat - he just decided not to because Ikkaku wants it. 

Also did we forget that Yumichika literally repressed part of his soul (his zanpakutou) and willingly does so because it doesn’t adhere to the principles of the 11th Division and thus Ikkaku’s principles?? I find it insanely ironic how Ikkaku also has a Kido-based Bankai and this is once more, unwelcome in the 11th. I don’t know what parallels to draw there but it’s strangely poetic in a sense. I absolutely love it. These two are a ride and die pair, and doesn’t actually mind dying.

4. Ishida Ryuuken and Kurosaki Isshin

Are they both married? Yes. Are they both dads? Yes. Do I care? No.

Jokes aside, this pair is definitely enemies to friends galore. Whether they progressed to the lovers stage is another debate, but I’d like to think Ryuuken shooting arrows aimed at Isshin’s head is just another way of expressing his friendship for the other man.

To clarify, I don’t necessarily see these two in a romantic light. I don’t think they ever could progress to that stage; the way I see their relationship is similar to Kyoraku and Ukitake’s - a pair of old men who stuck with each other. In Ryuuken and Isshin’s case, they don’t necessarily like each other, they do it out of necessity. 

(Also, Ryuuken rightfully hates Isshin for a lot of shit that he pulled. Not that Ryuuken is exactly the model father, but he’s much better than that douchebag over there.)

But the thing is, their relationship benefits a lot of people. To the extent that I could argue it benefits the Bleach-verse. That much is clear in their past - even though they are of opposite sides of the world (Quincy vs Shinigami), they decided to put aside their differences for Masaki. Of course Ryuuken got the short end of the stick for that, but at the end Masaki was saved and Aizen’s plans were thwarted (for the time being, anyways). And then it happened again in the TYBW Arc - they went to Wahrweit together to kill Yhwach. Whether the two actually played a decisive role in the battle was quite debatable, but nonetheless they liked each other enough to work together, and when they do, it usually ends well.

My problem with these two is the fact that Kubo!! doesn’t!! portray!! enough!! of these two!! The Quincy Encyclopaedia episodes were so funny and stupid and it just shows how much potential there is for this DILF pair?? And honestly why wouldn’t you show more? Both of their sons were off to save the world, both their wives were killed by the same dude (that their sons later went off to kill). I wish Kubo showed more of their relationship along the same lines as Uryuu and Ichigo had in the early episodes of Bleach - honestly, the fact that this wasn’t shown more in the TYBW was Kubo’s biggest loss, imo. 

Also if you think about it Yhwach and Aizen actually drew these two together, against all odds. Even the universe can’t keep these two old men apart from their grudging friendship. I absolutely love it.

5. Hisagi Shuuhei and Ayasegawa Yumichika

Yes, I know I literally just talked about Yumichika and Ikkaku, but let me ramble about this as well. 

I know these two don’t actually get a lot of screentime together in either the anime or the manga, because Hisagi is usually with Kira and Yumichika with Ikkaku, but what we’ve seen is enough for me to fantasise and giggle like a maniac *rubs hands gleefully*

First of all, we see Yumichika releasing his actual shikai in front of Hisagi in the SS arc - granted, this is in response to the news that Ikkaku may be defeated and in mortal danger, but unfortunately, Hisagi survives at the end of it. And to me, there’s some kind of twisted romanticism to be taken from the irony (and tragedy, on Yumichika’s part, because Ru’iro Kujaku was seen by someone who managed to tell the tale - not that Hisagi ever does, anyways) of the entire situation. You would’ve thought that something would’ve came out of this - it’s a big revelation, after all, and Yumichika is someone who can and has shown to be capable of taking that secret to the grave if need be. But literally nothing happens! We don’t even get to see much interaction between the two because Hisagi later angsts over losing his captain (rightfully so) with Kira, and forms something of a friendship with Komamura. 

Then we see Yumichika rushing to Ikkaku’s aid, and halfway through get held off by Hisagi. Again!! I don’t know whether this is deliberate on Kubo’s part or whether he decided Hisagi was probably the only one who could hold Yumichika in all of his murderous rage, but I don’t hate it. I actually rather like it. I guess it shows the two sides of Yumichika that receives different attitudes - Ikkaku enables and rides that wave of eccentricity with him, while Hisagi helps keep him in rein. I have a thing for control in relationships, so I guess I love this one :D 

But yes, to me, this is a huge missed opportunity that I don’t think get talked about enough. For the whole part, these two behave like normal and like colleagues around each other (as they should), but the sexual tension between them tells me otherwise. After all, who knows what happens behind closed doors? 

6. Kuchiki Rukia and Kurosaki Ichigo

Aha, if you don’t think I have it within me to have room for one more straight couple (actually the only straight couple so far - Yoruichi and Kisuke are both bi/pan, I don’t make the rules), you’re absolutely wrong. We have Ichiruki here for your enjoyment :D 

The main reason this sits on my top list is because of how criminally robbed of this pairing we are. Don’t get me wrong, I think Rukia can end up with Renji and Orihime x Ichigo is equally possible. 

If Ichiruki didn’t already exist.

I’m sure you don’t need me to tell you exactly why, because there are countless many other blogs who have probably analysed this pair to death and cursed Kubo in the same breath already. But in a nutshell, the gist (and how I feel) is basically this - the entire series had set itself up in a way that makes Ichigo (and Rukia, in the same line) impossible to end up with anyone else except the person they started off with. Yes, Orihime and Renji are both very dear companions to them both who both have the opportunity to be something more, but the endgame has to be Ichigo and Rukia. Literally just look at the panel I’ve used - since when has Ichigo ever looked at Orihime with such tenderness in his eyes? Never, that’s the answer. And to have the series end with him marrying Orihime - the girl who has only ever been a classmate to him, who has only ever been a friend to him? I think even Kubo realised the irony (and inaccuracy) of the entire situation when he aptly names the last chapter of the manga ‘The Death and The Strawberry’. Yes, you can argue that he did that because that was what the first chapter of the manga was, it’s a nice call back to the beginning of the series, etc. etc. But the funny thing was, the first chapter was a very illustrative example of how characters were set up to be together.

Anyways, I could go into a whole tangent into why these two absolutely deserve to be together, but you’ve probably heard this way too many times already, so I’ll just shut up and leave you with that specific manga panel.

(edit: I just went down a rabbit hole of scrolling down the Bleach meta tag - I’m correcting my stance because there are many people who pointed out how Renji x Rukia is very possible and legitimate. And I agree. The problem isn’t Renruki, the problem is Ichihime. I think Renruki is very legit but it won’t sit on my top list for...reasons. So here’s some Ichiruki because I do like this ship quite a lot)

7. Ootoribashi ‘Rose’ Roojuurou and Hirako Shinji

A crack ship, all things considered, to be honest, but one that actually has potential and could happen. (For those wondering, no, Mashiro and Kensei are not crack ship potential. There is potential for Kensei to die of high blood pressure, but that’s it) 

I know these two are stuck in no screentime hell again, and in fact don’t actually have any panels together (hence this screenshot from 110 years ago when they were lined up in order of Division during Kisuke’s promotion), but if you think about it, they do have some similarities. Personality-wise, they are the only two who I think are chill enough to tolerate certain members of the Visored and Gotei 13. Sure, Rose may need to compose a ballad to do it, but he could. (I don’t count Hacchi because he’s the only normal member of the Visoreds and is overworked enough) They’re also the relatively normal members of the group and aren’t too crazy in the already eccentric nature of the Bleach-verse. Plus, they both share a like for music. Anyone who listens to music (esp jazz and classical) are good in my books. 

To be honest, I think one of the reasons why I decided to pair these two together is because they’re the two I see able to interact normally with each other within the Visoreds. You could theoretically put some members of the Visoreds together, but it’ll probably involve a lot of shouting and sandals to the face or where it hurts. 

Plus, they both seem to be quite meticulous in their appearances and care to dress and present well enough to have long hair (which is a bitch to deal with at best). What’s not to like (ship)? 

MINOR SPOILERS FOR THE MANGA/TYBW BELOW

8. Kurotsuchi Nemu and Akon

Ah yes. The only two people in the 12th Division who even remotely emanates the meaning of the word ‘normal’. Or at least as normal as you can be whilst being in the 12th.

This is also a pair which I don’t...really see as romantic in nature? It’s a possibility for sure, given enough time and interaction. Especially if Nemu starts to stop trying to gain Mayuri’s approval and love and detaches herself from him more, the first person she would form a significant relationship with would definitely be Akon. And to be honest, I think that relationship is already there. Putting aside their exchange about her existence (as shown here) when she was little aside, I should think as colleagues they would have discussions about the future of the 12th Division and SDRI (though that might involve a lot of Nemu saying ‘I need to run this through Mayuri-sama’ and ‘whatever Mayuri-sama says is good enough’). I also headcanon Nemu spending her sparse amounts of free time (when not with the Shinigami Women’s Association or Mayuri) with Akon?? In the context of the 12th Division, Akon is a good model for what ‘normal behaviour’ looks like, especially if you’re trying to fit in. He also noticeably doesn’t judge. At all. He’d seen much worse than someone trying to handle their own emotions, and that doesn’t come with stakes that are too high like the 12th Division exploding and needing to allocate a decent amount of the budget to renovations (which unfortunately happens more often than you think). All in all, I feel like the Nemu x Akon ship is quite sibling-like in nature.

It’s possible (and here I’m starting to cook up headcanons, lmao) that they also have interactions together where Akon is trying to teach Nemu to be normal, or at least act normally enough that is acceptable in the larger realm of the Gotei 13, because god forbid Mayuri doesn’t have the time, patience, nor experience to actually teach her that. (Akon is of the opinion that the 12th Division already has one psychotic maniac in their leadership, it doesn’t need two) So Akon is the one who lets her know what ‘normal’ looks like - he doesn’t actively teach her because he’s not that type of guy, but bit by bit Nemu picks it up by proximity, until her speech is formal enough and she doesn’t ask questions that are too absurd. 

And yes, there is absolutely one interaction where she catches him on one of his smoke breaks, tries to smoke, and accidentally swallows a cigarette. Akon may or may not have panicked, and he may or may not have been either waved away dismissively by Mayuri, or screamed at by his boss.

Honestly, this man doesn’t get paid enough to deal with all the shit that happens. 

MAJOR SPOILERS FOR THE MANGA/TYBW BELOW

9. Ishida Uryuu and Jugram Haschwalth

Let me preface this by saying what an injustice that this particular manga panel wasn’t the first search result on Google. I had to find it through this hellsite 

Anyways, for the people who don’t know what is between these two and are brave enough to spoil the contents of the manga for themselves, basically Uryuu goes to the Wandenreich to avenge his mother by playing double agent between the bad Quincy (Yhwach’s gang) and the good Quincy (himself, his father, and everyone else in his family) - which actually benefits the Shinigami, but that’s another mess to clean up later. Uryuu goes through the whole thing of pledging loyalty to Yhwach and ending up a member of the Sternritter, and was even made Yhwach’s heir. Everyone is obviously pissed at this because Jugram is the rightful heir, but he keeps silent and plays at being a good sport. Until Uryuu tries to sneak into Yhwach’s room. Then he blows his top and corners Uryuu - literally.

I have to admit, I actually ship this pair first when I first saw Jugram on-screen purely for purposes of aesthecism, before realising the whole schtick between Jugram and Bazz-B (more on that later), and the whole other schtick between Jugram and Yhwach (who are entirely possible, but a pair I don’t ship). But then when you think about it, these two have this whole enemies to lovers/Quincy prince thing going on that I’m absolutely invested in. Jugram knows Uryuu has his own nefarious reasons for joining the Sternritter, and he’s the one who has the most potential to topple everything he currently stands and lives for, but at the same time, doesn’t that just free up the whole baggage for Jugram to actually live his own life? The way I see it, Jugram doesn’t really have much of a purpose in his life - he doesn’t know what to do with it, because all his life someone else gives it meaning. First Bazz-B, then Yhwach. Uryuu presents an escape from all of this. Especially adding to the fact that he’s a Gemischt and Jugram is an Echt. I might be slightly delusional but to me this reeks of a prince x forbidden lover troupe. And I’m absolutely obsessed with it.

10. Jugram Haschwalth and Bazz-B 

For those who don’t know the nature of their relationship and wants to know ahead of time, these two basically are again, childhood friends who grew up to be military men (do I have a type? I have a type). They are both 1,000+ and have been in the first generation of the Sternritter when Yhwach was first sealed away, and actually started off wanting to murder the heck out of Yhwach rather than serve him. 

I’ll obviously start this one off with - if you lived more than 1,000 years and haven’t developed feelings for your best friend, especially someone as attractive as [one of the two people here], something is wrong with you. 

The bittersweet taste of betrayal is so strong with these two as well - starting off intending to murder a man only to have your best friend become his right hand man and be called his ‘other half’? You can’t tell me Bazz-B hasn’t been upset or pined painfully for Jugram, even if just for his friendship. The entire relationship is just so bittersweet and brimming with possibility that it makes my heart wrench a little (actually, a lot). And unlike the rest of the ships on this list, it’s unrequited love on both sides that could flourish into something that never came to fruition. Which makes it even more easy for me to go feral because !! Don’t we all love angst. And especially that last scene where the two of them fight it out? :(((

And to be fair, I’ve only really read the Bleach wiki about these two so I can’t say I know much about their relationship, but what I do know is making me go absolutely fucking ballistic.)

I think we’re reading May We Be Spared to Meet on Earth at roughly the same time and are currently at roughly the same parts. I just wanted to say I think that’s very cool of us 😌 Do you have any favorite letters so far?

You're right that is very cool of us! Let me just uhhh look through my notes...

So far my favorite letters have been Goodsir's letter to his dad which I reblogged from you, for the reasons in the post. Goodsir is so bluntly endearing, somehow. He seems very young. Oh I've just looked up how old Goodsir was when the expedition vanished and he was 28. Oh alright then. I'm emotional about this.

Other favorite letter so far was unexpectedly one of John Irving's, to his sister-in-law Catherine. This paragraph really hit me as like, a premonition of the upcoming disaster:

"I intended to write something to amuse you, but I find I cannot help being serious. Everything around me, and every duty I am engaged in, tend at present to make me so-- I mean all keep me so much alive the feeling of a long separation from those near and dear to me. Even in writing I am reminded that a terrible long pause of anxious suspense is before me, when I can only hope, without the prospect of tidings of good or ill. So, my dear Katie, do not blame me that you should have been, whilst reading the mass of scribbling, obliged to banish your usual smiles. I will write you yet again, so I shall not take a very formal farewell of you at this time. My most brotherly love to my dear Lewis. --Yours very affectionately, John Irving."

Irving also sent back to England a number of drawings. Several men did but Irving's seem to be the best of the ones included in the book. Also, of two skeletons returned to England at the time of the McClintock expedition, one of them was identified as Irving by the presence of a maths medal next to the body, which I find deeply endearing. This book has made me a big Irving fan, honestly. Didn't have any strong feelings about him before starting reading this and now I'm like ough... my guy.

My other observation so far is that it seems like Franklin was unfairly characterized in the show, as his letters so far paint a picture of a fairly cautious man.

It is Fitzjames who is the king of hubris.

There are multiple letters where the endnotes make note of how the things he is saying shows he does not have a good understanding of the Arctic and that's really interesting to me from the perspective of seeing show!Crozier and Fitzjames' relationship conflict early on as coming from a place of Crozier's experience vs Fitzjames' support of Franklin's dismissal of him, with the idea (I had always thought) being that Franklin thinks his feelings of optimism and belief God will see them through are substitutes for dealing with the material realities of that place. And like, no! Actually that should have been Fitzjames, going off these letters! But it makes sense from a character writing perspective. Foolish, foolish man. Excited to see how my opinion of this evolves as I continue to read.

Also, Fitzjames' aggressive confidence in repeatedly pestering John Barrow Jr. about whether he's gotten the position or not is honestly kind of inspiring in a "if this man from the 1840s can speak like he knows anything when he clearly doesn't I myself should step up game in these job interviews". There's one particular letter that absolutely floored me, and it was the 11th of February one:

"In case of Crozier's appointment I send you a letter to Beaufort asking him to try for Le Vesconte which pray send at once as soon as you know I am not to go-- if I am appointed tear it up-- .... Mind I am in confident expectations of the Second Ship in Franklin's expedition nothing else is worth having." [I have used italics where there were underlines]

Nothing else is worth having. Absolutely awful, vainglorious man. This has made me dearly want to write my own version of my headcanon first meeting of "Fitzjames puffs himself up, fails to impress Crozier, feels rejected about it and forms a grudge" because holy shit, he is actually so much worse than I already thought. Also because "nothing else is worth having" would be a banger title.

I do appreciate that Fitzjames seems to have been a man who is eager to lift other men up, as this is not the only time he makes suggestions to Barrow Jr. about appointments and promotions-- if he was obsessed with status for himself he was at least trying to lift his friends up, as well. Pity this doesn't extend to Crozier! Would have been a very different expedition if it did!

Bouncing off this post here, I want to talk a little about Neji and romantic relationships beyond just my shipping preferences. Though I wouldn't call this very exact meta either, as there's nothing to really go off of.

The truth is, Neji died before his love life was relevant. I know a lot of people think that he and Tenten would have ended up together but I'm not so sure. I believe he would have stayed uncoupled like his teammates in canon. Team Gai are Team Comic Relief and have genuinely had the most wholly platonic team-centric content of any of the Konoha 12 and the only crush we see from any of them is Lee's on Sakura, which was never gonna happen. I doubt Kishimoto would leave only Lee uncoupled of the team. At most, I think Neji would end the series with an implied off-screen Hyūga wife and a kid.

To add to this, as far as spin-off/AU/filler content goes, we only see 'Neji is a perv' 'Neji has a sister complex' 'Hinata considers Neji a romantic rival' 'Neji is unaffected by Sexy no Jutsu', none of which are a serious attempt to answer the question of 'What does Neji want?'

I also wonder if Neji could even marry out of the Hyūga clan, not just because of his caste status, but because he's a nobleman. He's not likely to be taking someone else's name. Historically speaking, men tend to be the only ones who can start a new branch clan, but in canon the equivalent of this is Hizashi being sealed. Hyūga seem to keep to themselves; Himawari and Boruto imply that the white eyes are a recessive trait. Hinata marrying out is an exception because she was already effectively disowned and she's marrying the Ninja Saviour.

(Of course, if Kishimoto wanted it to happen it would, the Hyūga entering the modern world and changing, but I'm working within the understanding of what we have.)

Narratively speaking, Neji is also far more intertwined with the destiny of the Hyūga clan than Hinata, whose story has centered her feelings for Naruto from the jump. I have a hard time seeing him leaving his family behind for love. Though he's had some very valid issues with his family, he's also fully embraced their techniques and their name; he just wants the respect and equal treatment he's owed within that.

With no canon evidence of romantic interest to go on, I personally focus on how Neji is like Gaara, that is, such a Naruto fanboy that it becomes its own beast of the headiest affectionate feelings we see displayed from them. Neji smiling so genuinely at what could be his final moments because he's thinking of how Naruto saved him is pretty intense.

'Hope is a thing with feathers, that perches in the soul ...'

I've touched on it in another post, but I also think it's sincerely amusing that when Hinata sacrifices herself in the Pain Invasion Neji goes "Why'd she do that?" His own dad sacrificed himself for love! And he has to know of her feelings for Naruto. He even asks if she wants to see Naruto off at the end of part one and hears of how the mere sight of Naruto gives Hinata the vapours. Yet he just doesn't get it ... until you fast forward a bit and put him on that battlefield with Naruto and Hinata in danger, and suddenly Neji's taking the bullet. As he dies in Naruto's arms, he says, "Naruto, Hinata-sama is willing to die for you. So remember you hold more than one life in your hands. And it seems that my life too may have been one of them." He directly parallels himself to Hinata (who sacrificed herself for love of Naruto) and says Naruto holds his life too. I mean, alright!

I'm not saying Kishimoto deliberately wrote Neji in love with Naruto but I think so long as Neji and Hinata are foils to each other who are both moved by the same man, you can derive interesting interpretations from that.

To return to 'what would Neji want' my personal answer is 'Someone able to offer perspectives he had not considered.' It's not just about being challenged -- the person needs to have a real point to make that they can back up. This suggests the person in question would need a certain strength of character, intuition, and likely the power to influence the world around them. This is generally what I go with when writing, but of course, it remains all headcanon.

I hope people forgive me for this very speculative post, I just ... got carried away writing it so hey. Here ya go! 👋

regarding the birdie bad dad thing, idk if this is a situation you can logic your way out of by citing facts about the poor guy. unfortunately i think a lot of people think substance abuse = a terrible person regardless of when their addiction began or why, because theres a pretty persistent belief in our society that only bad people become addicted to drugs/alcohol in the first place lmfao. it conveniently makes people coping with mental and physical health crises that much easier to ignore!

yeah, i will say for the person i saw the other day, when someone corrected them and said "hey, birdie didn't have alcohol issues when he was a father, it couldn't have impacted his kids," they did recant. i don't wanna imply this guy stuck their head in the sand or anything, they admitted they were wrong. but it was such a weird take on the character, because all you have to do to see that literally isn't true is to read an eight word sentence at the end of his character bio

like i've seen him forgotten when listing decent parents in the lisa universe-- people pulled from fangames under the assumption there were no non-abusive parents in the base games which, like, isn't true-- and i do think that birdie's current state as a person with pretty obvious addiction issues does just sort of make people forget that he is the only parent in lisa who is never implied to be bad to his kids in any way

part of it is probably just that people don't seem to think about him more seriously-- despite being a party member with one of the most clearly defined backstories pre-definitive edition, he doesn't get a ton of in-depth fan content outside of random fanart, so people just sort of remember him as The Drunk Guy and then if they remember he had kids, might just go "yikes, that probably wasn't good," but i do think you're absolutely onto something about how people will just automatically demonize anyone with addiction issues, no matter what the circumstances are behind it. birdie has one of the most ""valid"" reasons to be struggling with addiction that anyone could dream up-- the man was a single father who lost his kids to a situation that seemed mostly, if not entirely, out of his control and he spiraled after that-- and even acts in a pretty "palatable" way, mostly being weepy or overly affectionate, and there have still been some people who have just automatically assumed he was abusive in some way. he's Bad because he's drunk and well we really don't have to think about him and his grief any further than that! he's just a Drunk Guy, so all the circumstances around it must be his own fault.

idk like he is a side character at the end of the day, despite the interesting parallels that can be drawn between him and some of the most important characters in the game, and the general importance he may hold in a narrative about fatherhood, i don't wanna imply that Not Understanding this random party member is like, the most pressing issue in the lisa fandom. i just think it's a shame that he gets overlooked so easily, and it's sort of disconcerting that i've seen people forget that he was implied to be a decent dad more than once

anyway yeah i agree very much with this ask, and especially how addicts are just unfairly demonized no matter how they actually act as people. i do understand how, in a narrative about abuse and especially abusive fathers, someone might assume that birdie would have also been a shitty dad. like genuinely, i do, especially if they haven't reread the character bios in a while, or just heard secondhand that apparently birdie has kids who passed away. but the fact that people forgetting that the circumstances behind joey and jimmy's deaths seemed more like an issue of a lack of resources than deliberate abuse or neglect is a take i've seen more than once is just surprising, and birdie's current-day alcoholism being cited for why he must have been a bad dad is just sort of frustrating

🔴 (Angsty/Sad)

Colorado’s one of the few States that gets attached to humans. He sticks by those he sees as friends for decades, always around to see them age and eventually die. The end for all mortal creatures, but it still hurts.

Colorado’s biggest fear is those he loves dying, and seeing so many of his friends— mortal human friends, people he knew would die long before him— pass upsets him more than it would other States, States who get used to people they know dying. States who can grieve for a day or so and move on.

Every time, he goes back to Mom and Dad’s house, he stays there for days. He brings his dogs, because he knows they’ll leave him too, one day, and wants to spend as much time as he can with them.

At Mom and Dad’s house, there are no expectations. He doesn’t have to work, can just curl up in his childhood bedroom and grieve. If it hurts too much, he’ll even lock his Mom and Dad out of the room. They won’t force themselves in. Just remind him to eat, and leave food at the door. They don’t quite understand, they’ve never really cared about humans, but they do their best to comfort him.

Sometimes, he and his human friends will grow apart before it gets to that point, but they still pass away all too soon. It still hurts, but it’s not as bad.

It hurts more when he looses a pet.

He’ll grieve pets for years, has kept all their collars and favorite toys, even when he eventually finds another stray and takes them in.

...He has a lot of pictures, all the way back to when he was a child himself, playing in the streets with the human children while his Mom was in the markets. He has hundreds of photo albums full of friends and pets, and they all have one thing in common...

They’re all someone he lost.

🌑 (Sleep)

When he was younger, he slept horribly. Always too hot or too cold. It was always too loud or too quiet. Definitely one of those babies that kept his parents up for hours before they finally figured out how to get him to sleep.

Thinner shirts, thinner blankets, but combined they were warm enough to keep him from getting sick. A quiet music box he still has to this day, and even used with his own Cities.

As he got older he grew out of his pickiness with sleeping conditions, and can pretty much sleep wherever. He can’t nap though, he just can’t sleep during the day.

The marijuana definitely helps, though.

👔 (Clothes)

Very much a black cargo pants man. He loves the pockets. Perfect for holding everything the local weed dealer needs…not that he’s a dealer (Don’t tell Mom or Dad—).

Hiking boots, he may love to ski and snowboard, but he loves to hike in the warmer months— he’s often invited to join Oregon and Washington with his dogs.

Puffer vest, one with a hood. I love vests and he seems like the type. It’s his State flag colors and the funky little ‘C’ and circle they have. I love it, it such a weird (affectionate) flag to me.

In colder months, he’ll wear a white sweater, a thicker black beanie, and his ski goggles.

In the warmer months, he’ll wear a white t-shirt underneath the vest. He also has one of those thinner beanies made for summer, also black. In place of his goggles, he’ll have those sporty sunglasses.

He also has a silver chain necklace, and all his cities have a matching one. He also wears a watch to keep track of time, he’s very time blind— probably made worse by the marijuana. It’s an older model of watch, he gets a new one every few decades. But the first one he ever got was his Dad’s old watch, and he keeps that old thing in a drawer of his desk.

(Gov has tried to get him to throw the old watch out; “Joshua, it doesn’t even work anymore. It’s taking up space.” “I don’t care.”, he’s very sentimental)

🏡 (Home)

All the States have several homes throughout, usually apartments in major cities and homes in suburbs.

Then they have their Main House, usually wayy bigger than the others (most being manors) somewhere in their State.

Colorado has a rustic-style, manor-ish (not as big as a manor but close) home in the mountains, pretty far away from other people.

He likes humans, more than he probably should, but he likes having the big open space-- his doggos love it too. It’s perfect for when all his kids come visit, enough space for them all to have their own thing, yet close enough for them to be meshed together. He can’t have them all over at once, unless some want to share beds, sleep on couches, and camp in the yard.

There are plenty of natural trails he likes to take around, and its just a pop away from anything else!

🟣 (Romantic/Sexual/Shippy)

🍜 (Food)

He’s a stoner. He’s got the munchies. He will eat pretty much anything edible thats placed in front of him.

But if Mom or Dad makes cinnamon rolls...he has to be held back from eating all of them. Like, literally restrained.

It’s ONLY if Mom or Dad makes them. He will not do it with anyone elses cinnamon rolls.

It’s not that strange, we’re pretty sure everything Gov and Assistant make is laced with something...the lab results have shown nothing weird, but we can’t be too sure. It might be magic.

🧵 (Hobbies)

Skiing, snowboarding, rock climbing...of course, those are expected. He will try everything outdoorsy once! Its fun for him and his dogs, and his kids often join him.

He also has a synthesizer and plays grand piano, though he usually only does the grand piano at Mom and Dad’s house. He also has a portable beatmaker. He likes the flashy buttons.

He does yoga and other exercises, and likes jigsaws.

Mom taught him to crochet, and he often does it when he’s stressed.

Most States know how to sew, Mom and Dad taught them so they could fix their own clothes if needed, but Colorado is one of few that wanted to crochet too.
