OC EMOJI asks: The Quad Life AU; Red:
CAKE SLICE - favourite cake flavour? are they specific about types of cakes? PANCAKE - what is their comfort breakfast? ANGER - what are some habits they have that will take some getting used to? BOUQUET - create a bouqet for them! what do those flowers mean? are any of the flowers their particular favourite? SPEAK-NO-EVIL - what is something they will refuse to stay quiet about? GREEN HEART - what things make them feel comforted? hugs, kisses, food?
Favorite cake flavor? Are they specific about types of cakes?
Poor Red… He loves the idea of cake, loves all the amazing and beautiful decorations and designs, the delicious aroma of one baking in the oven…
But after twenty plus years of being heavily restricted when it came to his diet, his taste buds and stomach just can’t handle all that sugary, rich goodness. He remembers that CJ LOVED chocolate cake and he tried it once… but gagged, dry-heaved, and retched at how overpowering it was on his tongue.
And Garrett taught him how to bake certain cakes, pies, and pastries when Red used to sneak off to the old man’s farm. And he could eat them afterwards and actually enjoy the little indulgence. But he was younger then and hadn’t been forced to follow his fighter’s diet that long at this point. The memories make him a little sad, but the price of vomiting it all back up just isn’t worth the battle.
What is their comfort breakfast?
That one’s a little tricky. In the palace, breakfast was a lot of protein and healthy fat with a few carbs mixed in. Boiled eggs, cottage cheese, smoked salmon, berries, avocados, whole milk… very, very clean. Routine is comfort for Red even if it appears stifling to Tommy and Jason. Drakkon tried to tempt him with waffles, sausages, rich pancakes with syrup… which he promptly vomited all over kitchen or outside in the flowerbeds if he managed to keep it down that long.
What are some habits they have that will take some getting used to?
Red loves the simple life. He much prefers things that are not electronic or complicated or high-tech. The palace was definitely not a modern environment and, though CJ had experienced a normal teenage life up until becoming a Ranger and then Drakkon’s psychiatric experiment, Red was a completely new and different person, just inhabiting another person’s body essentially. Complicated gadgets confused and frustrated him, sometimes frightened him. It only highlighted the areas he still felt ‘dumb’ in.
Red loves his music on the radio; that is not too involved to plug in and switch on or dial in the desired station. He usually has music playing while tidying the house or working in the yard.
He doesn’t use a lot of appliances either besides the stove top. His diet is pretty natural and straightforward without a lot of prep or elaborate cooking involved. Red uses a regular broom and mop on the floors, beats the rugs outside, etc. No weird robotic vacuums or other technology. Alexa would freak him out.
And the other three love the ease and convenience of modern technology. They use them but Red insists on doing his chores HIS way.
Red often forgets to keep his cell phone on him, which is a very, very basic old flip phone that is practically a dinosaur model. Remembering to charge it is another can of worms. He would often plunk it down and forget it wherever it lay. Since he was usually home if not out with one of the others, it wasn’t necessarily a huge deal but could be frustrating on occasion.
Since he doesn’t usually go out, Red is the group’s homebody. The others like to go to the mall, to the movies, out to eat… but other people, especially large groups, agitate Red. He gets into fight-or-flight mode from being overstimulated or feeling trapped or feeling like he’s being ‘sized up’. His PTSD flares up and he can hallucinate being back in a cage fight. If he catches this happening, he is prone to go missing, holing up somewhere Tommy and Jason never think to look. Drakkon only knows because he knows how Red thinks… and had sent several hours in the past prior to joining up with the other two, hunting his partner down in big-box stores or shopping centers.
As time goes on, Red branches out a little with his camera and taking up photography. Eventually, he’s persuaded to share his nature and gardening photos and he starts dabbling with a computer, starting his own little plant blog (with Jason’s help initially) under his new name ‘Jamie’.
Another annoying thing is that it doesn’t occur to him to start switching on the lights when it starts getting dark outside. In the palace, if it was too dark, one would light candles. There were big, bright overhead lights to flip on. Its almost like he just doesn’t realize he doesn’t have to navigate about in the dark. Tommy, Jason, and Drakkon occasionally hurt themselves by running into things or each other because there’s zero light.
And Tommy is petrified that Red always agrees or goes along with what everyone else says or wants since he went decades unable to have a voice. Sometimes he does this, but only because he doesn’t have an opinion or care all that much which is just gas on the fire for Tommy’s fretting.
Of course, both Tommy and Jason have to get used to Drakkon and Red and their joking/teasing about traumatic things that happened between them and all their nicknames for each other etc.
And Red is forever wearing clothing that is just slightly too big for him; perhaps rebelling subconsciously against his old skin tight uniform and collar??
Create a bouquet for them! What do those flowers mean? Are any of the flowers their particular favorite?
Red’s bouquet would made of Clematis blooms (mental beauty), Coreopsis (always cheerful), and Bird of Paradise (freedom/joy). White carnations (innocence), Lotus (rebirth), and purple Columbine (resolution) for the part of him that is CJ.
I think Red would love the Bird of Paradise. And of course he loves his Sweet Juliet.
What is something they will refuse to stay quiet about?
Red will call Drakkon out if he starts sliding into his bullshit attitude especially with Tommy. He knows they are going to butt heads often until they find a way to settle their issues with each other and themselves, but the bickering eventually gets on his last nerve.
He also feels that since they are technically older, he and Drakkon should be better role models now for Tommy and Jason (lol). Like with cautioning them about taking too many body shots (which everyone ends up fucking up with) or helping (or trying to help) with college course stuff, which they can’t really do more than harp about studying and doing homework given their own missing education.
Red is big on trying to compromise and be fair, for obvious reasons…
He gets REALLY upset if the others start treating him like a child or don’t listen to him when he’s expressing how he feels in relation to a question THEY asked. For example, the whole issue with the Snoopy Halloween costume and Tommy yelling at Drakkon when it was RED’S idea and he WANTED to be Snoopy!
As a lover of plants and animals, Red also harps on the others about using reusable totes at the store instead of plastic bags, cutting any rings on soft drink holders, using food scraps for composting, wasting water or electricity, recycling, not raking when the caterpillars are making their cozy hibernation hideouts, balloon releases hurting animals and other wildlife… He’s environmentally minded! Locals become familiar with him and Red becomes something of an unofficial ‘plant doctor.’
And Grid help you, if you mess with his gardening tools.
What things make them feel comforted? Hugs, kisses, food?
Red is comforted by touch. Hugs and kisses, stroking his hair or his back. Helping him feel like he’s hidden by assisting in creating a blanket-type nest or cocoon when he’s feeling overstimulated and needing to hide (early years). Having an arm around him. Holding his hand when he’s nervous or trying to overcome his fears. Laying down for a nap and a cuddle. Or a fuck and a cuddle.

The Indispensable Role of a Steamer in Your Kitchen
Tumblr media
In the bustling world of modern kitchens, where gadgets and appliances vie for counter space, one often overlooked gem is the humble steamer. While it might not boast the glamour of a shiny stand mixer or the versatility of a multicooker, a steamer is a secret weapon every kitchen must have. In this blog post, we'll explore why a steamer is an indispensable tool for home cooks, offering health benefits and enhancing the flavours and textures of your culinary creations.
Preserving Nutrients and Enhancing Flavor
One of the primary reasons to introduce a steamer to your kitchen is its ability to preserve the nutritional value of your food. Unlike boiling or frying, steaming involves cooking with steam, which helps retain essential vitamins and minerals often lost through other cooking methods. The gentle heat of the steam ensures that your vegetables, proteins, and grains maintain their natural goodness, contributing to a healthier and more balanced diet.
Moreover, steaming enhances the natural flavours of your ingredients. The method allows foods to cook in their juices, resulting in a more intense taste experience. Vegetables emerge vibrant and crisp, proteins succulent and tender, while grains balance moisture and fluffiness perfectly. By incorporating a steamer into your kitchen repertoire, you elevate the overall quality of your meals without the need for excessive fats or oils.
Versatility in Culinary Creativity
One of the standout features of a steamer is its incredible versatility. From vegetables and seafood to dumplings and desserts, a steamer can handle a wide range of ingredients with finesse. Steaming isn't just limited to a specific cuisine; it seamlessly integrates into various cooking styles, making it a valuable addition for those who love to experiment in the kitchen.
Steaming also opens up possibilities for creating healthier versions of your favourite dishes. Instead of sautéing or frying, try cooking vegetables and proteins to maintain their nutritional integrity while enjoying the same delicious flavours. You can even explore the art of steamed desserts, discovering a new realm of guilt-free indulgence.
Time and Energy Efficiency
In our fast-paced lives, time is a precious commodity. A steamer's efficiency in cooking and cleaning cannot be overstated. Steaming is a quick cooking method, often requiring less time than traditional techniques. With a steamer, you can have a nutritious and delectable meal on the table in a fraction of the time it would take using other methods.
Additionally, the energy efficiency of steamers is commendable. Steamers generally consume less energy than ovens or stovetops, contributing to a more sustainable kitchen. This makes them an environmentally friendly choice for those conscious of their carbon footprint.
Healthier Cooking with Minimal Effort
Steaming offers a healthier alternative to many cooking methods without sacrificing flavour. The process requires little to no added fats, making it an ideal choice for those looking to reduce calorie intake or maintain a heart-healthy diet. Steamed dishes are also known for being easier on the digestive system, making them suitable for individuals with dietary restrictions or sensitive stomachs.
Furthermore, the simplicity of steaming allows for easy meal preparation. With minimal hands-on effort, you can create wholesome dishes catering to various dietary preferences. From busy professionals to home cooks with limited time, a steamer becomes a valuable ally in the quest for convenient, nutritious meals.
In conclusion, a steamer is a culinary powerhouse that deserves a prominent place in every kitchen. Its ability to preserve nutrients, enhance flavours, and provide versatility in cooking makes it an invaluable tool for novice and seasoned chefs. As we prioritize health-conscious choices and efficient cooking methods, the steamer emerges as a hero who effortlessly combines these elements. So, unlock the potential of your kitchen and embrace the magic of steaming – your taste buds and well-being will thank you.

In today's fast-paced and busy world, finding time to prepare healthy meals can be a challenge. The demands of work, family, and other commitments often leave little room for cooking from scratch on a daily basis. However, meal prepping has emerged as a popular solution to this problem, allowing individuals to plan and prepare meals in advance, saving time and ensuring a nutritious diet. In this article, we will explore the concept of meal prepping and its relevance in modern life.
Meal prepping involves preparing a week's worth of meals or portions in advance. This can be done on a designated day, typically on weekends when people have more free time. The process includes planning the menu, grocery shopping, cooking, portioning, and storing the meals. By investing a few hours of concentrated effort, individuals can reap the benefits throughout the week.
One of the primary advantages of meal prepping is the time-saving aspect. With meals already prepared and portioned, there is no need to spend time cooking each day. This is especially beneficial for individuals with hectic schedules or those who struggle to find the motivation to cook after a long day. By having healthy meals readily available, they can avoid relying on fast food or unhealthy convenience options.
Additionally, meal prepping promotes better nutrition and portion control. When planning meals in advance, individuals can carefully select nutritious ingredients and create well-balanced meals. This helps in maintaining a healthy diet, as it eliminates impulsive and unhealthy food choices. Moreover, portioning the meals in advance ensures that individuals eat appropriate serving sizes, preventing overeating and promoting weight management.
Meal prepping also offers financial benefits. By buying groceries in bulk and preparing meals at home, individuals can save money compared to dining out or buying pre-packaged meals. Additionally, planning meals in advance reduces food waste, as ingredients can be utilized efficiently and leftovers can be incorporated into future meals. This not only saves money but also contributes to a more sustainable lifestyle.
Furthermore, meal prepping allows individuals to customize their meals according to dietary preferences, allergies, or specific health goals. It provides the flexibility to accommodate different dietary restrictions and ensures that individuals have control over the ingredients used in their meals. Whether following a low-carb, vegetarian, or gluten-free diet, meal prepping allows for tailored meal plans to meet individual needs.
Technology has also played a significant role in enhancing meal prepping in modern life. With the advent of recipe apps, online meal planners, and kitchen gadgets, the process has become more accessible and efficient. These tools provide recipe ideas, generate shopping lists, and offer step-by-step instructions, simplifying the meal prepping process and making it more enjoyable.
In conclusion, meal prepping has become increasingly relevant in modern life due to its time-saving nature, nutritional benefits, cost-effectiveness, and flexibility. It allows individuals to take control of their diets, maintain a healthy lifestyle, and save both time and money. With the aid of technology, meal prepping has become more accessible and enjoyable, making it an excellent option for individuals striving to balance their busy lives with a nutritious diet.

A Few Financial Basics...
Create a Financial CalendarIf you don’t trust yourself to remember to pay your quarterly taxes or periodically pull a credit report, think about setting appointment reminders for these important money to-dos in the same way that you would an annual doctor’s visit or car tune-up. A good place to start? Our ultimate financial calendar.
How To Make Money
Check Your Interest RateQ: Which loan should you pay off first? A: The one with the highest interest rate. Q: Which savings account should you open? A: The one with the best interest rate. Q: Why does credit card debt give us such a headache? A: Blame it on the compound interest rate. Bottom line here: Paying attention to interest rates will help inform which debt or savings commitments you should focus on.
Track Your Net WorthYour net worth—the difference between your assets and debt—is the big-picture number that can tell you where you stand financially.

Keep an eye on it, and it can help keep you apprised of the progress you’re making toward your financial goals—or warn you if you’re backsliding.
Set a Budget, PeriodThis is the starting point for every other goal in your life. Here’s a checklist for building a knockout personal budget.
Consider an All-Cash DietIf you’re consistently overspending, this will break you out of that rut. Don’t believe us? The cash diet changed the lives of these three people. And when this woman went all cash, she realized that it wasn’t as scary as she thought. Really.
Allocate at least 20% of Your Income Toward Financial PrioritiesBy priorities, we mean building up emergency savings, paying off debt, and padding your retirement nest egg. Seem like a big percentage? Here’s why we love this number.
Budget About 30% of Your Income for Lifestyle SpendingThis includes movies, restaurants, and happy hours—basically, anything that doesn’t cover basic necessities. By abiding by the 30% rule, you can save and splurge at the same time.
Draft a Financial Vision BoardYou need the motivation to start adopting better money habits, and if you craft a vision board, it can help remind you to stay on track with your financial goals.
How To Make Money
Set Specific Financial GoalsUse numbers and dates, not just words, to describe what you want to accomplish with your money. How much debt do you want to pay off—and when? How much do you want to be saved, and by what date?
Make Bite-Size Money GoalsOne study showed that the farther away a goal seems, and the less sure we are about when it will happen, the more likely we are to give up. So in addition to focusing on big goals (say, buying a home), aim to also set smaller, short-term goals along the way that will reap quicker results—like saving some money each week in order to take a trip in six months.
Banish Toxic Money ThoughtsHello, self-fulfilling prophecy! If you psych yourself out before you even get started (“I’ll never pay off debt!”), then you’re setting yourself up to fail. So don’t be a fatalist, and switch to more positive mantras.
Get Your Finances–and Body—in ShapeOne study showed that more exercise leads to higher pay because you tend to be more productive after you’ve worked up a sweat. So taking up running may help amp up your financial game. Plus, all the habits and discipline associated with, say, running marathons are also associated with managing your money well.
Learn How to SavorSavoring means appreciating what you have now, instead of trying to get happy by acquiring more things.

Get a Money BuddyAccording to one study, friends with similar traits can pick up good habits from each other—and it applies to your money too! So try gathering several friends for regular money lunches, like this woman did, paying off $35,000 of debt in the process.
Start With Small Debts to Help You Conquer the Big Ones
If you have a mountain of debt, studies show paying off the little debts can give you the confidence to tackle the larger ones. You know, like paying off a modest balance on a department store card before getting to the card with the bigger balance. Of course, we generally recommend chipping away at the card with the highest interest rate, but sometimes psyching yourself up is worth it.

Opt for Mortgage Payments Below 28% of Your Monthly Income
That’s a general rule of thumb when you’re trying to figure out how much house you can afford. Learn more about this number here. And then indulge in some voyeurism and see what other couples can afford.
Evaluate Purchases by Cost Per Use
It may seem more financially responsible to buy a trendy $5 shirt than a basic $30 shirt—but only if you ignore the quality factor! When deciding if the latest tech toy, kitchen gadget, or apparel item is worth it, factor in how many times you’ll use it or wear it. For that matter, you can even consider cost per hour for experiences!
How To Make Money
Spend on Experiences, Not ThingsPutting your money toward purchases like a concert or a picnic in the park—instead of spending it on pricey material objects—gives you more happiness for your buck. The research says so.
Those are all great goals, and there are probably a few more on your own list! But where do you start? To reach your goals, you need a plan that gives you a clear path.
When you focus on accomplishing one goal at a time, you’ll start to make real progress.
Take a couple of minutes to write down some of your financial goals. Maybe you want to pay off all your credit cards. But wait, you also need to set aside some money for emergencies.
How To Manage Your Money Better
Have a Budget: Many people don’t budget because they don’t want to go through what they think will be a boring process of listing out expenses, adding up numbers, and making sure everything lines up. If you’re bad with money, you don’t have room for excuses with budgeting. If all it takes to get your spending on track is a few hours working a budget each month, why wouldn’t you do it? Instead of focusing on the process of creating a budget, focus on the value that budgeting will bring to your life.
How To Make Money
Using the Budget: Your budget is useless if you make it then let it collect dust in a folder tucked away in your bookshelf or file cabinet. Refer to it often throughout the month to help guide your spending decisions. Update it as you pay bills and spend on other monthly expenses. At any given time during the month, you should have an idea of how much money you’re able to spend, considering any expenses you have left to pay.
Give Yourself a Limit for Unbudgeted Spending: A critical part of your budget is the net income or the amount of money left after you subtract your expenses from your income. If you have any money left over, you can use it for fun and entertainment, but only up to a certain amount. You can’t go crazy with this money, especially if it’s not a lot of it has to last the entire month. Before you make any big purchases, make sure it won’t interfere with anything else you have planned.
Track Your Spending: Small purchases here and there add up quickly, and before you know it, you’ve overspent your budget. Start tracking your spending to discover places where you may be unknowingly overspending. Save your receipts and write your purchases in a spending journal, categorizing them so you can identify areas where you have a hard time keeping your spending in check.
How To Make Money
Don’t Commit to Any New Recurring Monthly Bills: Just because your income and credit qualify you for a certain loan, doesn’t mean you should take it. Many people naively think the bank wouldn’t approve them for a credit card or loan they can’t afford.
The bank only knows your income, as you’ve reported, and the debt obligations included on your credit report, not any other obligations that could prevent you from making your payments on time. It’s up to you to decide whether a monthly payment is affordable based on your income and other monthly obligations.
Make Sure You’re Paying the Best Prices: You can make the most of your money comparison shopping, ensuring that you’re paying the lowest prices for products and services. Look for discounts, coupons, and cheaper alternatives whenever you can.
Save Up for Big Purchases: The ability to delay gratification will go along way in helping you be better with money. When you put off large purchases, rather than sacrificing more important essentials or putting the purchase on a credit card.
you give yourself time to evaluate whether the purchase is necessary and even more time to compare prices. By saving up rather than using credit, you avoid paying interest on the purchase.6 And if you save rather than skipping bills or obligations, well, you don’t have to deal with the many consequences of missing those bills.
Limit Your Credit Card Purchases: Credit cards are a bad spender’s worst enemy. When you run out of cash, you simply turn to your credit cards without considering whether you can afford to pay the balance. Resist the urge to use your credit cards for purchases you can’t afford, especially on items you don’t really need.
How To Make Money
Contribute to Savings Regularly: Depositing money into a savings account each month can help you build healthy financial habits. You can even set it up, so the money is automatically transferred from your checking account to your savings account. That way, you don’t have to remember to make the transfer.
Being Good With Money Takes Practice: In the beginning, you may not be used to planning ahead and putting off purchases until you can afford them. The more you make these habits part of your daily life, the easier it is to manage your money, and the better off your finances will be.
Setting Competitive Rates..The first thing you’ll need to decide is how much you’ll charge for your work. Figure out what your desired annual income is.
Then, do some research on the market to get a general idea of what others charge to ensure you’re not grossly underselling yourself.
Next, estimate how many hours per year you’ll be working. Remember to factor in vacation time and sick days, and decide if you’ll work weekends. Once you have an estimate of how many hours per year you’ll work, factor in the cost of doing business.
This could include any supplies or bills necessary to do your job. After this, you should be able to calculate an hourly rate.
Tracking Your IncomeYou’ll likely have multiple invoices from various clients, so it’s important to keep everything organized.
Don’t rely on memory—if you overstate your income, you’ve overpaid in taxes, and if you understate your income, the IRS will likely charge you penalties.
Likewise, don’t wait for 1099 forms to come in from your clients—often times the number on the 1099 is wrong, and you’ll have no way of knowing unless you’ve kept track of income yourself.
Separating Your Accounts When it comes time to review your budget or pay taxes, you’ll find it so much easier to determine which expenses are business-related and which are personal if they are in separate accounts. Consider the following structure:
Business CheckingThis is your business’s account for client payments and business expenses. Charge anything necessary for doing business to this account.
Business SavingsThis is a place to put aside money for quarterly taxes. Separating these funds will give you a better idea of how much money your business actually has.
Personal CheckingThis is your regular checking account for any personal expenses.
Personal SavingsThis is your emergency fund, which should be considerably larger as a freelancer since income fluctuates. Don’t touch this unless there’s a true emergency.
Health InsuranceGetting proper health insurance is one of the most important considerations for freelancers as most employers do not offer coverage for these types of employees.
It’s especially important to find a good plan because if you become sick, you’ll likely not be earning any income until you’re well enough to work again.
Saving For RetirementHaving a retirement plan is an important and essential part of financial health.
As a freelancer, you won’t have access to 401(k) matching from your employer, but there are still other great options to consider. Contributing 15% of your after-tax earnings is a good place to start, but consult your financial advisor if you’re unsure.
Defined Benefit PlanA defined benefit plan is best for those with no employees who want to save aggressively for retirement.
Contributions are tax-deductible and taxed as income in retirement. Limits for contributions are calculated based on the benefits you want to receive in retirement, your age, and the expected investment return.
The downside is that they’re expensive with high setup and annual fees. The upside is that you can contribute anywhere from $50,000–$80,000 annually.

I love your financial posts. I am curious what your opinion is on items other than clothes and cars, as far as how much to spend? Like food, kitchen/household supplies, technology, furniture, so on? Like I got that brand names/aesthetics are pretty low priority for you compared to longevity/maintenance, but like, where do you draw the line and for what sort of things? What if it's something that needs time rather than cash to fix, for example a knife that dulls easily?
These are huge categories of things, and there is no real rule for “how much to spend” because it depends on who you are, what you need, how much money you have, and what you’re trying to accomplish.
If you have not surmised from my fics containing thousand word recipes and various posts on eggs and cooking with dashi, and perhaps the first chapter of the fic I just posted which lovingly detailing a perfectly coursed breakfast menu, I really, really like food. And cooking. And food.
I have strong feelings about kitchen equipment and food, PARTICULARLY knives. (I have strong feelings about most things, but particularly strong feelings about food-related things). I also have an unusual amount of kitchen gadgetry–if you read my onsen katsudon post, you’ll realize that I have an immersion circulator, for instance. So I obviously am not going to preach extreme sparsity in the kitchen.
So…massive post about kitchen gadgets and food below the jump.
Random thoughts on kitchen gadgets!
Unless you’re a chef, you don’t need a knife set; you need ONE EXTREMELY GOOD CHEF’S KNIFE. 70% of the knives in any given knife block don’t get used, and 20% only get used because the one knife you do use isn’t clean. Don’t put it in the dishwasher. Don’t let it jostle around in the random crap drawer and get the edge jostled. Hone it on a regular basis. You need to get your knife sharpened when it gets dull (every year or so), and this costs like maybe $7-12. This is the holy grail of knives, but this will do.
It is worth it to pay money for a good knife. Good knives make cooking easier by about eleventy billion percent. Good knives also mean you use less pressure while cooking, which means you’re less likely to cut yourself and have to go to the ER for stitches–an outcome that would probably swamp any savings you might have on the actual knife itself.
It is also worth it to watch some basic YouTube videos on knife skills for that same reason. (As a general rule, buy kitchen equipment at your skill level, not above it.)
By contrast, there is a lot of kitchen equipment that quite a few people actually really don’t need–food processors and stand mixers come to mind. Yes, many people use some of these things some of the time, and some people use some of these things all the time. But if you would only ever use your fancy KitchenAid stand mixer to make whipped cream twice a year, I have a horrifying suggestion for you: get a wire whisk and whip your cream by hand. It really doesn’t take as long as you think it will.
Likewise, food processors–I guess some people use these all the time? But many people get food processors because they should have them, and rarely use them, if ever, because it turns out that while they may chop things faster they’re a lot harder to clean than a knife, and if you have a good knife and decent knife skills, unless you’re cooking for a bloody army, you don’t need it and aren’t going to use it. At the fast and small end, you can use them for home-making pesto, which is definitely useful, but if you have a good blender you can do it there, too.
Here’s my set of kitchen gadgets that I use on a semi-regular basis: blender, rice cooker, waffle iron, immersion circulator. Some people will ditch the immersion circulator in favor of a slow cooker; most rice cookers double as slow cookers. I also have a travel rice cooker that I bring on business trips.
I started with really super-basic versions of all of these things, and then, as those super-basic versions gave up the ghost, replaced them one-by-one, first with really decent medium-quality versions of themselves, and then, as those lasted longer, with the holy grail versions.
Random thoughts about food
Food spending is something I have only recently started to get a handle on, in large part because food is such a deep and emotional subject. I’m still not all the way there, but I’ve learned a lot in the last couple of years, and maybe the things I have learned will be helpful to others.
I’m going to beg your pardon for going into emotional things that may not seem relevant here, but I for me–and possibly for others, which is why I’m detailing it here–spending the right amount of money on food has been very closely related to my emotional relationship with food.
Food is very important. Money is a consideration in purchasing food, but it is not the only consideration. Food is the source of health. You need to be eating a properly balanced diet. If you aren’t, you’ll get tired more easily. You’ll feel sick. You’ll be more prone to developing certain diseases. These things are costly, and you need to take them into consideration.
Food is also (very often) a social activity. It is a time for families and friends to get together and talk about their day. It is (for me) an expression of love–something I can do for the people I care about that shows my caring, because I absolutely hate having to express myself verbally on these kinds of points. One of the ways that I personally say “I care about you” is to spend seventeen hours perfecting a recipe just so I can make something that is utterly delicious. This is particularly true for some members of my family with food sensitivities/dietary restrictions–being able to make delicious things that they would never imagine they could eat just see the look on their face makes me really, really happy.
Food is an emotional activity. Tastes can tap into memories. They can bring up nostalgia. They can bring up bad memories. Eating can be comfort; it can also be a way to hurt yourself.
What you put into yourself is very, very important–it should taste good, nourish you, and feed your soul. I just really, really believe in food, okay?
But. Our society sends us so many bullshit messages about food and our relationship with it. People get told that they can’t eat fats, or carbs, or this kind of meat, or soy protein, and if you eat too much you’re doing it wrong and if you eat too little you’re doing it wrong, and if you spend too much on food you’re an avocado-toast devouring wastrel who will never own a home, and if you spend too little on food you deserve the health disaster that is inevitably coming your way.
Over the course of my life, society and an array of health/diet-oriented books told me that my body was my enemy and the only way to transcend it was to ignore what it was telling me–to ignore hunger, to ignore cravings, to ignore the emotional response food brings in me, to treat these things as pariah, and to see myself as a weak, bad person because I hunger, crave, and respond emotionally.
Over the last couple of years, I’ve started working specifically with a food therapist, and I’ve started to unravel some of this. It has been a deeply emotional process.
And so let me say, with all the love I have in me, FUCK THIS SHIT. My body is not the enemy. Food is not the enemy. And yes, this is relevant to spending–learning to love myself and my relationship with food instead of hate it has helped me save money.
You’ll see why in a little bit.
A couple of years ago, I sat down to figure out how to spend less on food. At the time, I was spending an absolutely ridiculous amount on food–something like $125/week per person. (I’m going to use this as the measure of food–$$/week/person–because it’s most generalizable across the board. I think the national average is something like $50/week/person.) While this wasn’t breaking my budget, I have depressive episodes that really dampen my productivity and earning capacity, and I knew I was due for one, and *cough* I figured it would behoove me to tighten the budget where I could as much as possible.
That meant I had to figure out my pain points in food. At first blush, my thought was–I shouldn’t spend much less money than this, this is the kind of food I should be eating. I was buying lots of vegetables–organic, for the ones where it makes a big different. I bought organic meat, because it’s not laden with antibiotics. Et cetera.
Then I noticed a second thing: I was throwing out a lot of food.
Sure, I was making use of some of it. But I didn’t want to spend time cooking every day, and so I didn’t. Worse, I was purchasing the food I thought I should eat, and not the food I wanted to eat–meaning that my motivation to actually sit down and prepare the food I thought I should eat was weak, and so instead of making the planned uninspiring meal for the day, I would tell myself, “oh, I’ll make that for tomorrow” and then I’d get pizza.
In other words, I was lying to myself about what I actually wanted to eat, because I felt I should eat a certain way. Because I was lying to myself, I was spending money buying food that I was only ever going to hypothetically eat. Spending money for something that is going to get tossed is not a good financial decision. Because I couldn’t admit that I was lying to myself and didn’t want to eat the food I was purchasing, I was eating out more, which is both expensive and rather less healthy than just being fucking honest in the first place.
One additional thing that is specific to me, but that other people share, is this–even if I picked food I liked, and wanted to make, and usually would make, if I was having a really bad week depression-wise, I would not be arsed to take the 45 minutes to prepare it because depression sucks. This meant I was buying food while depressed that there was no chance in hell I would make.
In other words, the fundamental reason I was spending so much money on food is that I was buying food for a different person than I was. To fix the problem, I had to figure out who I was, and how to buy food for me and not this hypothetical always-health-conscious, never-makes-a-mistake, always-cooks-every-meal person I was pretending to be.
It’s taken me about eighteen months to get to the point where I have a food strategy that works for me. Here’s what I’ve come to as my guiding principles.
1. I deserve to eat food I want to eat.2. I deserve to eat well-balanced meals with a variety of foods.3. While I occasionally like going all out on cooking, I mostly want to spend about ten minutes on dinner prep because nobody has time for that shit on a regular basis.
My strategy has basically three components for me, but it will vary for everyone because what you like to eat is…up to you.
Component One: Protein.
I like eating meat. I particularly like fatty meats–chicken thighs over breasts, what have you. But I don’t need to, or even want to, eat a lot of it.
Solution: What I do is prepare meats in large quantity, and then portion them out into three to four ounce per person servings, and then freeze these. Thus, for instance, I’ll braise an entire lamb leg very slowly, and then weigh it into meal-sized bags. Or I’ll make a giant pot of butter chicken. Or turn a butt-roast into carnitas. Or cut up chicken thighs into pieces, and put three ounces per person into bags and freeze them. Or I’ll simmer several pounds of pork belly into chashu pork (https://www.justonecookbook.com/homemade-chashu/) and then set it aside in two ounce servings for person–two ounces because it is SO fatty that the satiety from a few ounces goes a very long way.
The night before, I take whatever it is I’m going to be making and move it from the freezer to the fridge.
Then for dinner, I microwave it. Or, in the case of the chicken thighs, turn on the oven broiler, skewer the chicken pieces, and make yakitori (recipe here: https://www.justonecookbook.com/yakitori/). Or, toss it into ramen broth. Or sometimes I’ll just scramble a bunch of eggs because eggs are delicious.
Things that go in the freezer are things that take 2-10 minutes of prep, max.
Three ounces is enough to satisfy me; two minutes is enough time that I don’t have to think about it.
At this point, I have a Costco membership, which means I can buy organic meat in bulk. That helps lower the price on things substantially.
Component Two: Fruits and vegetables.
I also like eating fruits and vegetables. That being said, I like variety, and unless you’re feeding an army, it takes freaking forever to get through the general amount of vegetables you can purchase from the store.
Solution: What I do is pick 3-4 vegetable side dishes every week. The rules are that the side dishes must vary in color and preparation method, and that I have to want to eat them.
So, for instance, this week my side dishes are: Quick salt-pickled cucumbers (these are pickled, and they’re green). Seasoned soy bean sprouts (these are blanched/boiled, and they’re white and yellow). Stir-fried eggplant (Using this recipe, http://www.koreanbapsang.com/2011/09/gaji-bokkeum-stir-fried-eggplants.html; these are purple). And a tomato salad seasoned with olive oil and red yuzu kosho (these are red and raw).
I also get fruits of different colors, too. The rules are the same–I have to get things I like. This week I have navel oranges and these utterly delicious peony grapes that make me want to break down and weep every time I eat them. It’s usually ¼ of an orange per person + about ½ handful of grapes at the end of each meal.
Component Three: Rice.
Look, I’m Asian, and yes, it’s stereotypical, but steamed rice is delicious and people have been eating it forever around the world, and plus, if you have a programmable rice cooker you can set it up way ahead of time and boom, rice is ready right at dinner time.
Here’s how a typical week works.
I do most of the work on Saturday.
On Saturday, I assess the state of my freezer. Do I need to add anything to my store of meals? If so, I’ll put that first on my list for the week. Sometimes I won’t need to add anything. I’ll round everything else out on the basis of what I have in there. My projected meals will look something like this: lamb / eggs / carnitas / pork belly ramen / yakitori / butter chicken / mapo tofu
I’ll also figure out my vegetable side dishes, and list all the ingredients needed to make them.
I go shopping. I come home. If I need to make something to add to the freezer, I make it. While I’m doing that, I also make my three to four vegetable side dishes and set them in the freezer. (I also make miso soup and some extra dashi; here’s why I make dashi.)
The assessment, planning, shopping, cooking, and parceling out the food I’ve just made takes me around 3-4 hours.
Thereafter, the production of dinner on every day other than Saturday looks like this:
Put whatever protein I have in the microwave/under the broiler/etc.Put rice in a bowl.Add small bits of vegetable side dishes to the bowl on top of the rice, taking up approximately 2/3rds of surface area.Put now finished protein on top of rice. Put on table.Microwave miso soup. Add seaweed to it. Plonk on table.Wash/cut fruit; put on plate.Take things for tomorrow’s dinner out of freezer and put it in fridge.
Dinner now takes approximately 3 minutes of morning prep to set up the rice, and 2-10 minutes to assemble. It consists of some kind of protein, rice, tons of vegetables, miso soup, and fruit.
There is a crapload of variety. It’s delicious. It’s nutritious. I don’t have so much of any one vegetable on my plate at any one time that I get tired of it, and I rotate weekly.
I have other things I do for variety’s sake–for instance, I made a huge quantity of this (https://www.justonecookbook.com/vegetarian-ramen/) up until just before the point where you add the soy milk, and then froze this in tiny packets as ramen base. Now if I want incredibly fucking delicious ramen, all I need to do is take my bag of ramen base out of the fridge, add soy milk and dashi, boil frozen ramen, add pork belly and a bunch of vegetables, and boom. FUCKING DELICIOUS RAMEN.
I’ll also sometimes make katsudon, because katsudon. And so forth.
In terms of cost, because I’m using the vegetables I buy for all the meals, I’m not buying a cabbage and throwing about ¾ of it because damn it is hard to eat an entire cabbage. (I grew up in a family of nine, and it was not hard for us to eat an entire cabbage then, but I am not currently in a family of nine.) Because I’m buying organic meat in bulk, I’m paying as little as possible for it, and because I’m freezing it until just before I use it, I’m not wasting it.
At this point, I probably only have to make a replacement for something in the fridge approximately once every 2 weeks. I’m eating better than I’ve ever eaten before. I’m eating out much less. On those weeks when I’m struggling with depression/have heavier workloads than most, I don’t even bother to try and replenish the freezer stuff, and I go to the Korean grocery store (I’m lucky enough to have one near me) and instead of making my side dishes, I just grab a handful of their pre-made ones, because my strategy is flexible enough to allow me to be the person I am on a regular basis.
The first few weeks when I started doing this, my costs–because I was putting two sets of things in the freezer every week, and because I had no freezer meals to draw off of–were fairly high, probably like $75/week/person, which is still higher than the national average, but less than I was spending before.
At this point, my costs per week are about $35/week/person. This is more than some people spend, but below the national average, and that’s pretty cool, considering that I’m still eating organic meats, and many organic vegetables.
Your solution to this may not look like my solution to this–your pain points are different, and you are different. But for me, I couldn’t start to get a handle on either my food spending or my eating habits until I started buying food for the person I was, not the person society told me I should be.
I also want to point out–again–that there are several items of privilege in this post that should not be assumed to be universal. First, in order to build up a solid store of freezer-stuffs, to the point where you can sustain a $35/week/person grocery bill, you need to be able to overspend the national average for a couple of months. Second, you have to be able to get yourself to a grocery store that sells organic stuff, and if you live in a food desert, it’s hard enough just finding a store that sells fresh vegetables, period. Third, I have a CostCo membership–I live less than a mile from a CostCo, and this isn’t open to everyone. Fourth, I live very close to multiple Asian grocery stores, and I really couldn’t eat delicious food regularly if I had to scramble to find broad bean paste or miso or the ingredients for dashi, or if I had to buy them from grocery stores that largely cater to white people and overcharge on these items by massive amounts if they even carry them. Fifth, I have a reasonably large freezer that is extremely reliable. Sixth, me and my family members are reasonably open to eating a wide variety of foods and have few food allergies or sensitivities. Seventh, I have one day a week that I can reasonably devote a large chunk of to food preparation.
There are other things, too–those are just the ones that jumped out to me upon immediate inspection. So my typical reminder again–this is what has worked for me. I’m telling you because it might work for you, and if it can help, that’s great. But please don’t lecture people with this post, because there are many ways that this strategy depends heavily on privileged statuses.

10 Real Weight-Loss Tips for Dogs that Work
#Poop4U
The post 10 Real Weight-Loss Tips for Dogs that Work by Arden Moore appeared first on Dogster. Copying over entire articles infringes on copyright laws. You may not be aware of it, but all of these articles were assigned, contracted and paid for, so they aren't considered public domain. However, we appreciate that you like the article and would love it if you continued sharing just the first paragraph of an article, then linking out to the rest of the piece on Dogster.com.
Yes, there actually are designated fat farms, weight-loss centers and so-called miracle diet pills to help dogs shed excess pounds, but most of us don’t have access, or perhaps, even the money to spend on them. But here is the skinny: Far too many dogs are overweight and even obese. Finding the right — and safe — strategy amid the hype of quick-loss broken promises can be challenging.
To help you — and your canine pal on this get-to-a-healthy weight mission, Dogster reached out to a pair of canine health experts: Ernie Ward, DVM, founder of the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention and based in Raleigh, North Carolina, and Jason Nicholas, BVetMed, The Preventive Vet based in Portland, Oregon. They recommend these effective weight-loss strategies:
Make friends with your veterinarian
Most veterinary practices are canine weight-loss centers in their own right, Dr. Nicholas reminds us. “Lots of practices will help pet owners formulate a specific diet/feeding/exercise plan, do regular weigh-ins and celebrate successes with people.”
Swap out treats for calorie-free praise
Sure, you want to reward your dog for sitting on cue, going potty in the backyard instead of on your living room rug and for politely greeting visitors instead of jumping up on them. But treats can pack on the pounds quickly. So instead of automatically handing out a treat each and every time your dog does what you ask, save calories by heaping on the praise.
Aim for slow and steady weight loss
Instead of focusing on the end goal — say, getting your 100-pound Labrador Retriever to get down to a healthy 75-pound weight, celebrate minor drops in weight.
“I have a lot of Labrador Retriever patients who are 100 pounds and who need to be 75 pounds,” Dr. Ward says. “But if they lose just 5 to 10 pounds, you will see improvements in their mobility and energy levels. Focus on your dog’s quality of life and not on the number of pounds lost.”
Count on your kitchen scale
It may surprise you, but when it comes to measuring your dog’s daily food portions, it is easier to do so using canned food than trying to count pieces of kibble. Dr. Ward recommends you use a kitchen scale to weigh out your dog’s daily portion of canned food.
“It is easier to divide a can of food than do kibble counting,” he adds. Of course, you can also measure out kibble pieces in a measuring cup, but the number of kibble may vary depending on the size of each piece.
Make a splash with a water treadmill
If your dog is obese and having trouble covering much distance on your neighborhood walks, help him get into shape by safely walking him on a water treadmill. Check with your veterinary clinic about available water treadmills for dogs in your area you can use. Walking in water is less stressful on your dog’s joints.
Recognize that certain breeds are prone to obesity.
Studies show that there is a genetic link to a dog’s food drive. For example, working breeds are bred to respond to food rewards. Pay extra attention to your dog’s weight if he is a Labrador Retriever, Dachshund, Golden Retriever, Pug, Cocker Spaniel, Boxer, Basset Hound, Beagle, Pekingese or Cairn Terrier.
Offer high-nutrient, low-calorie veggies
Instead of succumbing to your dog’s begging eyes for your pizza crust, offer a meaningful choice, such as a baby carrot or slice of zucchini.
Keep your senior dog moving
“Age is not a disease,” Dr. Ward says. “It is essential for senior dogs to engage in aerobic activity daily. Bodies are designed to move. Work with your veterinarian on pacing your dog’s activities.”
Try some high-tech gadgets
For home-alone dogs, there are products designed to entertain and exercise them while you are at work. For example, the iFetch releases a mini tennis ball for your dog to chase, grab and place back into the device to be relaunched. The FitBark tracks his activity level throughout the day. The Animo tracker tells how many calories a day your dog burns.
“These gadgets can make it more fun and engaging, but not every pet or person needs such technology to achieve weight loss,” Dr. Nicholas says. “One benefit is that these devices can help people take note of their dog’s heart rate, respiratory rate, activity level that might otherwise go unnoticed.”
Avoid crash diet game plans
If you abruptly reduce your dog’s food intake, the plan can backfire. “Scaling back on the amount of regular food you are feeding your dog can lead to some vitamin, mineral and/or other nutrient imbalances when feeding lower quantities of an otherwise balanced food,” Dr. Nicholas says. “There are therapeutic diets available from veterinarians that help achieve the desired degree of weight loss while helping the dog still feel full and satiated.”
Dr. Ward adds, “Nutrition is not a one-size-fits- all approach.” Nutrition is about finding out what works best for your individual pet.”
Time to Count Canine Calories
The number of calories in food and treats your dog gobbles up each day does matter and does count. Too many calories can pack on the pounds and cause your dog to have more waddle than wiggle in his step. Ernie Ward, DVM, agrees it can be tricky and confusing to determine how many calories your dog needs each day if you simply go by the recommended guides posted on dog food labels. Instead, he recommends you first reach out to your veterinarian to calculate the right number of calories to keep your dog at a healthy weight. Factors include level of activity and age. And, here is a calorie-calculating formula to use on dogs of all sizes:
Weigh your dog on a reliable scale.
Divide your dog’s weight by 2.2.
Multiply this figure times 30.
Add 70 and you will have the number of calories to feed a typical dog. (spayed/neutered, typically inactive and who lives indoors)

January Whole30 Prep
Okay, paleo people—who’s planning to kick off the New Year by committing to a January Whole30®?This post is packed with tips and tricks on how to prepare for a successful Whole30!
To some degree, we’re all suffering the aftereffects of falling into a monthlong series of deliciously dangerous food traps. After all that eggnog-guzzling and cookie-chomping, it’s no wonder we’re waking up with some bloating, achiness, splotchy skin, and just a teeeeeny bit of extra padding. I think it’s about time to gear up again and get mindful about the foods we’re putting in our bodies. Wanna join me?
Preparing for #JanuaryWhole30
Once again, starting January 1, I’ll be posting new Whole30-friendly paleo recipes and tips right here on Nom Nom Paleo!  Yes, I’ve done versions of this in years past, so if you’re too impatient to wait for this year’s edition, go check out my previous collections of Whole30 support and recipes.
Stick with me this January, and I’ll stuff your brain with all sorts of hacks for surviving a Whole30, and keep you on track as you figure out how different foods affect your health and well-being. In January, you won’t ever be left wondering what to cook or eat next.
Here’s the twist: this year, I’m going to make sure all the January recipes I share with you are CHEAP, FAST, and/or EASY. (I mean, they won’t be as cheap, fast, or easy as, say, picking up a greasy bag of fast food from the local drive-thru, but that would defeat the whole point of a healthy January reset, right?)
And as always, before jumping into a January Whole30, we’re going to do a little prep. Only this time, in keeping with our theme, I’m going to keep our prep as simple as possible. Ready?
What’s a Whole30?
Let’s start with the basics. The Whole30 is a tried-and-true 30-day dietary reset that eliminates all the foods that may keep you from your true superhero potential. Specifically, for a whole month, you commit to cutting out the bad-for-you stuff: the foods that are most commonly problematic, like sugar, dairy, grains, legumes, alcohol, and junk foods—including those made with “healthy” ingredients. Instead, you commit to eating whole, nutrient-dense foods for 30 days. For more information about the Whole30, go check out the program rules over here.
How Does Whole30 Differ From Paleo?
I know what you’re thinking: Isn’t the Whole30 the same as eating paleo? Well, yes…and no. Both ways of eating are similar, in that they’re about prioritizing whole, unprocessed, nutrient-rich, nourishing foods. I pretty much eat according to the Whole30 rules most of the time, which is why the vast majority of the recipes on my Paleo Recipe Index are entirely Whole30-friendly.
But the Whole30 is stricter than regular old paleo. Some people think of Whole30 as paleo without the treats, but the primary distinction is that the Whole30 has specific nonnegotiable rules and guidelines that you must follow for 30 days to complete it successfully. When you’re on a Whole30, certain foods that may be seen as “Paleo-friendly” are out, so don’t even think about making “paleo” Bacon Pancake Sandwiches even if the individual ingredients are technically compliant. Unfortunately, that also means that my super-yummy Paleo Pot Stickers are out until at least February 1st. Good thing you can still make my Potsticker Stir-Fry in January! (See? I got options!)
I know—it can be difficult to stick to specific food rules for 30 days. And yes, depending on what you’ve been eating up ’til now, it may take you a couple of weeks to adjust. But believe me: you will. And you’ll feel great. By Day 30, you’ll feel like a brand new person—and you’ll have a much better understanding of how different foods affect your personal wellness. After the Whole30, you’ll be able to systematically reintroduce foods back into your diet to see how each of them makes you feel, which’ll help you develop your own nutritional blueprint. Remember: you’re a special snowflake (just like everyone else!), so it’s important to learn what foods make you feel like the best version of you.
Prep For Success
Is the Whole30 really hard? For some, yes: Sticking 100% to the Whole30’s program rules for 30 consecutive days can be a struggle. Frankly, for many folks, sticking to ANYTHING for an entire month is super-tough. But listen to Melissa Hartwig, the headmistress of Whole30:
Your only job during the Whole30 is to focus on making good food choices. You don’t need to weigh or measure, you don’t need to count calories, you don’t need to purchase everything organic, grass-fed, pastured, or local. Just figure out how to stick to the Whole30 rules in any setting, around every special circumstance, under any amount of stress… for 30 straight days. Your only job? Eat. Good. Food.
You can do that, right? Besides, it’s a Whole30, not a Whole365 or a WholeForeverAndEverAndEver. It’s just 30 days, and I’ll be helping you along each step of the way!
To be perfectly honest, the biggest challenge you’ll face during a Whole30 is bland, boring food. If you try to tackle a Whole30 by eating nothing but boiled chicken breasts and steamed broccoli, by Week 2, you’ll be waging a full-on assault on a donut shop. That would violate the Whole30’s program rules (not to mention numerous laws), so instead, follow along with me this January, and I’ll keep your palates tickled with dozens of easy, flavor-forward, and super satisfying recipes!

You can coach and support your pals through the many ups and occasional downs, and best of all, you’ll never get bored with your food if everyone shares their Whole30 eats. Accountability works wonders!

Stock your Whole30 pantry!
Let’s start filling your kitchen with healthy food! I gave a talk at Lawrence Livermore National Labs with lots of tips on how to paleo-ize your pantry and fridge, and you can watch me do my thing over here:
.embed-container { position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; overflow: hidden; max-width: 100%; } .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; }
Also, click here for my epic post on how to stock your paleo kitchen and pantry like a boss.
Stock your kitchen with tools!
My cookbooks discuss the gadgets and tools I keep in my kitchen to make super-nomtastic grub, but if you want an up-to-date list of my favorite ones, head to my Amazon shopping page. These aren’t arbitrary items I’m recommending— I’ve bought every item on the page myself after reading extensive reviews on trusted sites.
If you have the space and extra moola, an Instant Pot, food processor, and spiralizer are useful tools to buy with your holiday gift cards!
Get in the Kitchen!
Most importantly: Cook! Trust me: It’s really, really hard to try to do a Whole30 without getting acquainted with your kitchen. The point of doing a Whole30 is to learn about how different foods affect you—and how can you possibly do that if you don’t know exactly what’s going into your mouth? As I said in Ready or Not!:
Knowing how to prep meals from scratch doesn’t just make you a more rounded individual or hearty survivalist—it makes you more mindful of the ingredients you’re putting in your body. By cooking at home, I know exactly what goes into my food. I never have to guess whether my dishes were cooked with ingredients that don’t sit well with me.
So crack open my cookbooks, check out some Whole30 recipes for inspiration, and get in the kitchen!
Nom Nom Paleo Meal Plans
Also, before I forget: Do you aspire to be a meal prepping maven? I have four weeks of meal plans and shopping lists in our new cookbook, Ready or Not!
If you want ultimate flexibility and customizability, subscribe to Real Plans—the most amazing meal planning program around! Seriously. It’s the bee’s knees. There are even add-on recipe modules by yours truly, Nom Nom Paleo, as well as the Whole30, too! Check it out here!
Leftover Makeovers FTW!
“Leftovers” is not a dirty word—especially if you know how to transform your extras into exciting new meals (a.k.a. leftover makeovers). My latest cookbook, Ready or Not!, includes a big section on leftover makeovers, so definitely grab a copy and bookmark the “Kinda Ready” chapter. Prefer to simply reheat the awesome dishes you couldn’t finish last night? That works, too, and is a fantastic way to stay sane on your Whole30 without feeling like you’re spending the entire month in the kitchen. So remember: don’t be afraid to make extra!
Okay, enough chit-chat. It’s time to gear up for an awesome January! As I’ve said before, keep your kitchen adventures fun and your taste buds excited, and you’ll cruise through the Whole30. Aren’t you excited to see which foods make you feel amazing?
Ready to go? I’m all about hand-holding, encouragement, and most importantly, PEER PRESSURE—so find a buddy to take the plunge with you, and let’s do this thing!
P.S. Got questions for me or tips for your fellow Whole30 participants? Please post ’em in the comments!

6 Ways to Handle Picky Eaters
Tumblr media
When I was a kid, I was a choosy eater. I do not understand if my parents realized it at the time, however whether I liked a meal or otherwise had very little to do with the taste. It was everything about the structure. I instantly recognized if I liked food based upon how it felt on my tongue - grainy, mushy as well as slimed foods did not agree with me and also would instantaneously trigger my gag response. I would commonly choose about whether I liked a food or not just by checking out it.
Now that I'm a parent myself, I have actually been honored with a particular eater of my own. I say honored, half joking (any type of moms and dad of a choosy eater understands most of the time handling a fussy eater is a curse). In my case though, parenting a choosy eater is a bit of a blessing. Having been a fussy eater myself has given me an one-of-a-kind insight right into the mind of a kid that is mindful concerning food as well as has given me the tools for exactly how to overcome this parenting hurdle.
Most children have a "point" that is making them choosy. For some it might be that they hesitate to eat foods that are a particular colour (for several youngsters this is environment-friendly), others are sensitive to appearance (like I was) and some do not like various sorts of food mixing or touching (my little girl fits into this classification).
As I grew up, my texture level of sensitivity slowly began to disappear and also I outgrew my choosy eating. I'm now a fairly adventurous eater and also make a great section of my living from establishing dishes for my internet site as well as mentor family-friendly food preparation courses in my community.
Two years ago I made "dominating the pickies" a priority in my house. While we have not formally claimed "bye bye" to the pickies, my little girl has ended up being a lot more adventurous with what she eats. I credit the adjustment to my 6 Policies To Urge a Picky-Free Home. I'm sharing these regulations with you today and also I wish that they will aid other family members produce a better connection with food in their homes.
6 Ways to Handle Picky Eaters
Rule 1: Determine what your youngster's "particular point" is.
If they are scared of a specific colour of vegetables (or vegetables generally) begin by concealing a little quantity of veggies in their food and afterwards slowly raising the quantity. Smoothies and juicing are excellent methods to creep some covert veggies into your youngster's diet plan and after that slowly boost the amounts.
If it's an appearance concern, check out various manner ins which you can utilize components to make the structure a lot more enticing. The appearance of a perfectly ripe avocado cut right into dices is really different from avocados mashed right into guacamole.
If they do not like various components blended together or touching, consider preparing their meals deconstructed. If you were preparing homemade poultry soup, take into consideration providing them a cup of brew with shredded or cubed poultry, carrots and celery separate on the side. Relying on exactly how delicate your kid is to his or her food touching, you can additionally purchase plates that have dividers to maintain each ingredient separated.
Rule 2: Everybody in the family members ought to only use favorable language and constructive criticism when it involves food.
Examples would be:
“This is yummy!”
" I enjoy the means these pop when I eat them!"
" Look how rather the colours on the plate are!"
Instigate the policy that no one ever before uses negative words when it comes to food. Words like 'despise', 'gross' or 'revolting' are not allowed. This is where the favorable constructive objection is especially effective. Youngsters must be encouraged to believe of why they don't like something as well as to determine it. Instead of saying "I hate this chicken, it's revolting," they could state "I found the chicken really hot on my tongue. Following time I wish to try it with less flavor."
I inform children in my courses that if they truly can not locate anything favorable to claim about the food that they need to say, "This isn't my preferred today, yet maybe I'll like it next time." You 'd marvel exactly how typically informing on your own that you might such as something next time really causes a positive food experience the following time you try it.
Rule 3: Talk about your food.
Encourage your youngsters to review what they such as about each meal. Moms and dads can most definitely lead by example on this set. Beginning a conversation at each meal about the flavours, appearances and colours of each food. Discover the suggestion of where the various components come from, such as, " These carrots were grown by the farmer who runs the farm stand where we do our produce buying" or "These peaches come from the Okanagan where we went with getaway in 2014!"
Talk concerning what active ingredients in the dish are everyone's much-loved, and what you might alter or include to try out the dish the following time you make it.
Rule 4: Turn off digital gadgets and also have everybody in the family eat as several dishes together as possible.
I know that this set can be challenging with the hectic lives all of us lead. It can be tempting to do what's easiest, to allow the kids consume supper in front of the TV when Dad is working late or to reach for your cellular phone when you listen to a text message come with. Eliminate digital lures as well as collect your whole family around the table. Everyone in your residence will certainly take advantage of this practice in numerous ways aside from simply "battling the pickies.'
Eating far from the TELEVISION and also various other electronic tools additionally urges conscious eating, which helps us obtain in song with our body as well as pay attention to our cravings cues.
Eating with each other, thanking for the food you are eating as well as developing family members memories together is simply one even more method to make food fun. And also when food is fun, your child is more probable to attempt brand-new things.
Rule 5: Plates do not need to be vacant at the end of a meal, but everybody requires to try a minimum of a bite of everything served.
Sometimes the first time your child attempts something they won't like it (the same thing goes for adults as well!) Do you understand that we get new tastebuds concerning every two weeks until we get to midlife? That indicates that our palates (what informs us if we such as the taste of something or otherwise) are constantly changing.
So even if your child doesn't such as something the first time they attempt it, doesn't indicate they won't like it the 5th, sixth or 12th time they attempt a bite. I can't tell you the amount of times this method has actually assisted me with my little girl. She has amazed me on countless occasions by instantly requesting second helpings of broccoli, bell peppers, cucumbers and also cantaloupe after attempting "simply one bite" for a number of months.
Rule 6: Obtain kids involved with meal preparation, grocery store buying, meal prep work and also cooking.
Sit down as a family as soon as a week and also strategy out the meals for the week. Ask each of your kids to pick one or 2 recipes that they wish to consume that week, then have them aid you make it.
Take your youngsters grocery shopping with you and encourage them to choose a fruit or veggie that they have not tried before to bring home to trying out. Make a video game of "eating the rainbow" and store by colour in the produce department.
Identify age proper tasks in the kitchen area that your youngster can assist with and get them involved developing homemade, heart-made dishes. You can review much more about exactly how to involve your picky eater in the kitchen area here.
I wish to leave you with one final factor though: please bear in mind that food is enjoyable! We never intend to turn the table into a field of battle, which I've seen taking place so frequently in the houses of particular eaters. Urge your kids to be endure, daring, food explorers! Lead by example as well as attempt not to let it worry you out.

Cooking School - A Good Investment For Learning
by bvalium
For some people, an education in culinary arts institutes or cooking schools can improve their quality of life. This is regardless of whether the student is just taking a few classes to improve on his cooking skills or genuinely interested to pursue a degree course. It also does not matter if the person was born with a natural talent for cooking or simply not very good at it. It is never too late or early to start seeking out opportunities in the culinary field.
Most of the local culinary arts institutes hold recreational classes in a fun manner for absolute beginners or amateur chefs. These are ordinary people who love food and just want to learn how to cook better. Such courses usually cover the basic aspects of cooking and the essence of good nutrition. The students will learn how to prepare healthy meals and snacks for their families.
In addition, attending a recreational culinary class at the cooking school is a great way to meet new interesting friends, learn a few culinary tricks and taste some delicious food.
A recreational culinary art course will teach about the ingredients and flavors on the different types of food around the world such as the best way to cook Indian curry, preparation of Chinese tim-sum, making fresh pasta with an Italian flair or the difference between a ragu and a marinara. Besides teaching on cooking skills, other lessons may include cooking techniques such as the various methods of steaming, roasting, frying, sauteing and braising food as well as proper knife skills such as how to make a cut of a slice of porterhouse steak or chicken and the way to de-bone a whole fish.
Then, there are the cooking schools for home cooks like the homemakers themselves. They have some experience but wish to learn some new techniques and improve on their skills. The classrooms in these schools are equipped with individual stations where the students have ‘hands-on’ training.
Each class in the schools usually specializes and focuses on just one particular cooking style or specific cuisine such as learning French cooking like making mousse or feather-light souffles, how to prepare the perfect Bearnaise sauce, the skill of cooking beef bourguignon or how to select the best wine to accompany a meal.
A few of such culinary classes at the culinary arts institutes should equip the student with the ability to create a stunning meal that will impress their family and friends on their newly acquired talent. At the same time, with the knowledge and skills learnt at the cooking school, they will be able to pick and select those foods with the best nutrients for their family.
For those individuals who wants to go for a degree in culinary education and become professional chefs and cook in some of the best restaurants in the world, most of the international cooking schools have courses that can facilitate the differing needs of their students. There are thousands of vocational colleges and universities scattered all over the world, each of them offering first-rate educational degrees in culinary.
The accredited programs at most of the professional cooking schools usually offers the broadest range of courses in the culinary world from the most basics of the culinary arts to the most advanced such as a bachelor’s or master’s degree in culinary business management.
Before graduating, some of the cooking schools make their students undergo an internship or apprenticeship in some of the restaurants or eating-houses. The students will usually begin with tasks such as preparing and cutting ingredients or monitoring temperatures before they are given more complicated and challenging roles. All the hard work put in will definitely pay off someday in the culinary world.

Meal Prep In Modern Life
Tumblr media
