Defy the Gods is a tabletop role-playing game of daring adventure, passionate romance and cursed power, set in fantasy ancient Mesopotamia. Inspired by Conan, Clash of the Titans and Princess Mononoke, it brings queer love and resistance to sword & sorcery role-play.
In Defy the Gods, you and your friends fight jealous gods and cruel tyrants who want to destroy you. You spin a story of wild invention and heart-rending drama.
Explore a fantasy ancient Mesopotamian world that you build at the table—its Pantheon, its Cities, its trackless Wilds. Its dream of Atlantis, its fate in the Underworld.
Win hearts and give your own. Your romantic entanglements leave you vulnerable, but they may save you.
Unseat the world's powers and dare to seat yourself on their throne.
Leap into danger, surrender your heart, and ascend to monstrous, godlike power.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Defy the Gods is a sword & sorcery story game about love and might. It's equal parts romance and adventure, using a version of the Powered by the Apocalypse engine. The game's opinionated mechanics point your story in exciting directions. Like Thirsty Sword Lesbians, you get to flirt with and tempt other characters. But you also get opportunities to seize power, which cuts against the romance.
Tumblr media
What manner of sword & sorcery is this?
Sword & sorcery is marked by propulsive action, gritty urban life, cosmic horror, protean wonder, and the drama of street-level heroes taking on overwhelming odds. Like many recent sword & sorcery works, Defy the Gods focuses on these elements, unburdened by loyalty to yesteryear's writers for their own sake. The late Howard Andrew Jones dubbed this movement "new edge" sword & sorcery.
What makes this a queer game?
Defy the Gods is a game of universal, visceral attraction. You may win anyone's interest. Spend others' hearts to aid or thwart them, throw them off-balance, or tempt them to do what you want. In Defy the Gods, love has no rules.
Also, the world is against you. The Pantheon of gods hates you, and the City's rulers want to push you to the margins. While your adventurer has tremendous talents, they are—at first—nothing compared to the forces arrayed against you.
Sword & sorcery is about underdog heroes battling civilization and unstoppable supernatural forces. This is queer life in a nutshell.
Tumblr media
Each playbook focuses on an archetype from sword & sorcery and its resonances with queer life. Every adventurer has their own arc of terrible power.
Tumblr media
The Revenant: a mortal recently escaped from the Underworld, pursued by demons. Call on the power of death while exploring your new life. Inspired by Inanna, Eurydice and Persephone.
The Sailor: a wide-traveled, mischievous trickster with a plan and a network of exes. Draw the map of the world, one destination or obstacle at a time. Inspired by Sindbad and Odysseus.
The Sorcerer: a scholar of the forbidden art, with unpredictable spells and an ever-warping body. Roll a bunch of dice and look for patterns in them. If you match a pattern to a spell you have, you can cast it. Otherwise, chaos burns you. Inspired by Thoth-Amon and everyone who's usually a villain in other sword & sorcery stories.
The Sword: a big-hearted, deadly person who refuses to bow to anyone. If combat hasn't started, kill a mortal within arm's reach, without rolling. Inspired by Conan and Jirel of Joiry.
The Vessel: the devoted, submissive servant of an exiled god, suffering willingly in exchange for transcendent power. Perform miracles through your wounds. Inspired by Elric of Melniboné.
The Wolfling: a human raised by animals, curious about civilization, and belonging to neither world. Hunt your prey and destroy ugly human contraptions. Inspired by Princess Mononoke.
Tumblr media
Every roll in this game has three possible results:
A miss. You roll too low and don't get what you want. The story gets more complicated.
A glowing success. You roll just right and get what you want. The story gets closer to your goals.
A burning success. You roll too high and get more than you bargained for. The story gets wild. This is the most metal result.
Epithets and Dooms
Your stats are your Epithets—phrases that describe who you are. You start with three of them, worth 0 to 2 points. To make most moves, invoke an Epithet, roll two six-sided dice, and add the Epithet's worth.
When you take harm, physically or socially, it hurts your reputation: Signify your would by demoting an Epithet's worth.
Gain more Epithets by giving your heart. But your immortal pride gives you Dooms that overwrite your Epithets and grant you dramatic, story-altering moves. When all your Epithets have become Dooms, your adventurer's arc is over. They have given themselves wholly to power. This makes them a new World Force—an NPC enemy.
The World Forces
Build your own antagonists at the start of the game:
The Pantheon: The gods, goddesses and demons who rule the cosmos and hate you. Give them domains like "Law," "War" and "Sex," but also "Abyss," "Hate" and "Searing Knowledge."
The City: Your home. Choose its location, its rulers, and its one unique thing. Sketch in its oppressive laws and informal communities.
The Wilds: The trackless regions beyond the City, full of gigantic, pitiless creatures. Pick the landscapes you want to explore—that will tell you which creatures you'll encounter.
The Legacy of Atlantis: Before humans were the Atlanteans. They lived without fear of the gods or fate. Then they discovered sorcery, and the Pantheon destroyed them. Find their blasted ruins in wild places and unlock their secrets.
The Underworld: The destination of all mortals. Decide what it looks like and how to find it.
These are the forces arrayed against you.
The World Scene
In between adventures, you flip the script: Play out a single scene as members of one of the World Forces, devising future trouble for your own adventurers. Fire up the Game Master's imagination and indicate where you want the story to go.

Hectic
It was just a rumour at first, an unbelievable one since no one really believed it at first but it slowly grew a little bit more every day as the hero community and more importantly Gotham's underworld noticed the changes in Red Hood.
He was all over the place.
One day he was in Metropolis. The next he was in Coast City. Then Star City and so on. Him and his team were hunting something or someone but the biggest change was the fact that Jason wasn't killing anymore.
He wasn't breaking the big bad bat's golden rule but he was hurting them. It didn't matter if it was an everyday rogue or one of those strange men in suits, Jason was breaking his enemies just enough that they weren't getting back up as quickly as they usually would. If anything the rogues and street criminals seemed to have it easier when compared to whatever group the Outlaws were dismantling.
His family thought he was spiraling again.
They couldn't find anything on the men in white or why Jason was targeting them so there was always the worry that his Pit Rage was somehow getting worse and Batman himself was seen stalking the shadows of Red Hood's territory in search of his wayward son except he couldn't find a trace of him, only the aftermath of his attacks against the group.
He stood before burning buildings and broken bodies night after night but was still somehow just a step or two behind his son.
Nightwing couldn't even pick up a trail and Oracle's ever present eyes were blinded by someone or something able to erase Jason's digital presence whenever he was out on one of his hunts.
After weeks and weeks of searching they were only whispers and rumours and they were close to asking for help when the alarms in Arkham went off.
It was a massive breakout.
Multiple rogues.
More importantly Jason was in the area and quickly responded with a huff of annoyance and a promise to be there and while they never saw him the Bat Family heard Red Hood's presence through the comms. "He's barely even using his guns." Barbara's voice echoed through a private channel.
"He's faster."
"Maybe he's picked up a couple of new tricks?" Dick suggested, sounding almost hopeful until Jason accidentally stumbled across the last person he ever wanted to see.
Neither Tim or Barbara could piece together the beginning of their conversation but every single one of them heard the Joker's rage filled screams as the madman mocked the little bird fluttering around their wayward bat and it caused them to freeze for just a second because no one was anywhere near Jason at the time. Batman and Robin were on the other side of Arkham dealing with Ivy at the time and Red Robin was busy with the Riddler so who was shadowing Red Hood?
Most of the cameras in the area were down so they didn't have much to work with when they started looking into it later. The few that weren't were heavily compromised leaving behind staticky images and blurry video that they watched again and again.
Bruce watched it the most, the brief confrontation as his son walked into frame, barely even glancing at the Joker, the only rogue still locked in his cell for some strange reason trying to goad him into responding and almost succeeded. He could practically see the green creeping into Jason's eyes as he stared down his tormenter before it vanished just as quickly as the blurry image of a hooded boy around Damian's age ran past on the upper floor urging him to hurry up with a shout of, "Come on old man!"
They'd apparently had a game going, a bet to see if the kid could take down more criminals than him and that had been more than enough for Jason to turn away from the Joker with a small shake of his head and an amused smile.
He didn't hear what his son said in response but Bruce watched that moment again and again as Jason walked away leaving the Joker pounding on the door to his cell screaming threats at him and the kid, trying to get some kind of response out of him since the electronics in the door were fried.
They'd been lucky there. A sudden power surge moments before the attempted prison break had left him trapped in his cell and out of the way. Reports claimed it would be weeks before a technician could get it open and Bruce was keeping an eye on it in case anyone from his gang tried something.
He read every report.
Tracked every log in and watched through a dozen different monitors as the Joker grew more and more annoyed about his recent turn of bad luck but his gaze always drifted back to the brief footage of the unknown boy that danced around Jason as they worked together to clear their part of Arkham before backup could arrive.
They had the bare bones of a file, brief moments of footage that showed he could fight, possibly had some kind of League connection judging from the style but nothing else. No alias. No other sightings. Nothing. The kid was practically a ghost and they still couldn't find any trace of Jason anywhere. He was back in Gotham. Reports had him and his new partner patrolling Crime Alley and beyond like nothing happened but soon enough there were news reports and theories and speculations and conspiracies all slowly starting to spring up about a black and grey bird fluttering around the dark red bat.
After months of nothing there were suddenly pictures of Jason and his new partner sitting on the edge of a rooftop eating burgers and fighting rouges along with grainy footage from Star City showing Roy helping the kid do a handstand while Jason watched on with a rarely seen smile.
"He looks happy."
The news labeled this new unknown Sparrow, they speculated over who he was, could he be Batman's newest bird, a sidekick or maybe even an Outlaw but Bruce was more focused on everything the news wasn't reporting.
Jason wasn't killing anymore.
He hadn't even come close in nearly two years now and while there were some concerns over his new approach to handling criminals even that was slowly fading away with every new piece of information they were able to piece together.
-_- -_- -_-
"He was expanding." Tim explained as he pulled up a map of Jason's old territory next to the new one that was easily twice as big. "Those weeks of unexplained rage we were concerned about was really just Jason pushed the mob families out of the areas surrounding Crime Alley."
Well them and the strange groups always dressed in all white. They still didn't know anything about the group or why Jason had been so hell bent on hunting them to the ends of the Earth but he'd pushed them out of Gotham before they could even begin to set up shop.
-_- -_- -_-
"Come on Roy. Please..... I'll beg if I have to."
"No."
"Please."
"No. He's asleep right now and I'm not gonna wake him up."
"You mean Sp-" "No, Jason. Danny's at school right now." Because Jason had thought tooth and nail for the kid to have a somewhat normal life and his definition of normal meant setting Danny up in a safehouse in Star City and quickly having a mini freakout over behaving like Bruce whenever he caught himself coming up with contingency plans to make sure no one could disrupt that. It was kind of funny to watch.
"Then send me some pictures."
-_- -_- -_-
"You must be the revenant. I'm here in search of the Great One."
Jason stared at the yeti standing out in the middle of the hallway blinked and slowly closed his door.
"Danny!"
I don't know what would fit better for this but I was stuck on two main ideas for how it could happen. Either Danny's parents hired the Outlaws to handle the GIW while they had to go on the run or Clockwork meddled and made a deal with Jason that he couldn't refuse. Either way Jason gets help with the pit, gets a kid who can curse the Joker with bad luck and calls some friends to help take down a rogue, badly run black ops group trying to destroy another reality and kind of forgets to let his family know what's going on so they're stuck learning about it through the news. It's not his fault. He asked Roy to keep them up to date. Roy just assumed they already knew and Starfire thought Roy said something since he was the responsible one.
A deaged Danny on the other hand, cause I like the occasional gremlin kid Danny fic is more than happy to let the adults handle things. Clockwork and or his parents trust Jason and he could finally put some of his fighting skills he picked up while time traveling to good use. League? What league? Oh, they're calling me Sparrow now. It's better than Invis-o-Bill so why not. Can I curse the clown? Please, please, please, please. It'll be so funny.

Mauga Head cannons
Just some headcannons about our big guy MAUGALOA MALOSI! Gender neutral reader ~
Tumblr media
He loves it when you run your hands through his hair like 100% will growl if you rub the right spot.
Will smack your ass in public no question. Loves it even more if you smack his ass back. Entertain his foolishness it hypes him up. When you both are out and walking he will put his hands in your back pocket if your wearing jeans, he expects you to do the same.
He doesn’t get jealous but he lets others know they don’t stand a chance. Anytime you guys are out at a bar and he sits you on his lap he smirks when he sees people staring but if someone stares at you for to long or try’s to make a advance he’s shoving his tongue down your throat and he doesn’t care who’s watching or if anyones uncomfortable.
Big on spoiling you. Anything you look at with interest he wants to get it for you. You’re his and it’s his job to make sure you have everything you want. Clothes, jewelry, food, liquor, collectibles, electronics. Anything you want he’d give you, sometimes you have to tell him to calm it down, that he doesn’t need to buy you everything you find interesting hoping he’d listen. He does not.
He most definitely buys lingerie and toys for you. If you come home and find it on your bed you’re wearing it that night. And if lingerie’s not your thing he prefers you naked anyway.
Melts when you spoil him in return. If you’re cooking for him he comes up behind you and holds your waist watching you even when you tell him to relax and sit. You buy him something he’s wearing it showing it off with pride. You pack his lunch and clean off his guns before a mission he kisses your face repeatedly until you remind him he’s gonna be late. He’s got a drawer for all the headbands you get him.
Bath time is always hectic. He’s so large so you have to get a big tub. Acts like a big baby when you both bathe together, he wants you to wash his hair and scrub his back. He splashes water on you if you say you don’t feel like it. He gets water EVERYWHERE without even trying. Showering together isn’t any better because he always wants to get dirty instead of getting clean if ya know what I mean.
Likes it when you get feisty with him. He even upsets you on purpose sometimes to get you riled up. You can get him to calm down when he’s angry but when you’re angry he wants to see how far you’ll take it.
Gets you guys matching shark slippers in all colors. Buys you diffrent turtle plushies too. Your beds full of em.
If you play video games with him be prepared. He’s competitive and will rub in in your face when he wins. If you win he’s gonna pout. Play as a team and he’ll scream in your ear if your winning in or losing it doesn’t matter he’s hyped up.
Definitely try’s to get a pet sea turtle and build an oasis pool for one. And somehow you encouraged the idea thinking it was just a funny thought. Now you both have a giant sea turtle named crush. You had to tell Mauga not to bring him a girlfriend or you’d have a turtle sanctuary you couldnt afford.
Mauga will and has fallen asleep on top of you. No matter how hot it is or no matter how heavy he is, you will be cuddled and he will not let you go even if you get out of it somehow. He always finds you again even in his sleep.
This chaotic gremlin will lick your face at random times just to spite you.

WARNING. ARKNIGHTS CHAPTER 15 spoilers under the cut. WARNING.
What the fuck, huh? Watching Sciel stream chap 15 and this shit bonkers yall.
Of course i got no translation, but i can list some notable elements and speculate from there.
1. Priestess is back, maybe she 3d printed herself from the originium?
1.1 She has a cautus kid. LMAOOOO
2. Misery is fighting Ascalon for some reason?
3. The Veil/fake sky gets shattered
4. Kal gets Thanos dusted????
5. The game mechanic for this chapter is PRTS messing with the map and deploying some enemies and traps which is freaky, ALSO ORACLE'S SPECTER STOPS YOUR DP generation???
5.1 Also drones that lock you out of operator deployments! As in they get a big red diamond timer on them and you have to wait before you can deploy them. Seems to favor the biggest dp cost first.
6. There's a cg where kal and Mont3r is doing that anime forehead to forehead thing bruh Mentor-student?? Mom-daughter?? Sisters-in-arms?? Platonic partners?? Yuri?? Just what is their deal!?
7. The Laterano LAW gets screentime, Also witch king, Also maybe the seaborne?? The three terraforming tools that Oracle and Priestess used way back when?
8. Endfield and Ex Astris connection??? Wtf
10. THE SHIP IS FUCKING GONE??? WHERE ARE WE GOING TO STAY??
9. The boss fight looks so damn hectic i think some of yall softies (affectionate) might actually have a panic attack from this cuz we have this huge giant drone thing that locks you out of deploying 4 operators at a time and PRTS is deploying some enemies and traps and the boss is this giant floating mess of monitors and electronics its so cool.
9.1 Also the boss theme is FUCKING BREAKCORE WOOOOO
11. Kal might actually be fuckin death cuz it seems like Mont3r rose from her ashes
12. Kal's Operaror records!!
13. Wtf i though bloodline of combat show's the ops in their peak?? Then wtf is this about?? MAAAAN
Maaan the status quo seems to genuinely be shaken up. One of the founding members, gone. The damn ship, gone. Hell maybe we don't have the PRTS system in-universe anymore idk!!
This does makes me pretty excited over where we are going because this looks like we're actually about to tackle the originium problem instead of playing knights with seige and co.

Track #2-7: Unauthorized Access
youtube
Artist: Erik McClure
Original: VS. BOX by Minako Hamano and Akira Fujiwara
Length: 3:34
"VS. BOX" is the battle theme of the B.O.X. Security Robot in Metroid Fusion (the first remix from that game for this album), and interestingly enough it's the only boss theme in the game to stick to a single recurring character. It's a short, punchy theme with electronic instruments to match the hectic battles against the rogue security robot (or more accurately, per Samus and Joey, bioroid). Erik McClure's remix of the theme, "Unauthorized Access" (named after the iconic computerized warning that alerts the robot to Samus's location in Sector 6), extends the short loop into a full three and half minutes. The remix mostly maintains the electronic sound, with buzzing synths and electronic percussion, while incorporating environmental sounds and building subtle melodies over the original.
This remix is Erik McClure's only contribution to Harmony of a Hunter, but it makes a great impact. Despite its short length, "VS. BOX" is one of my favorite songs from Fusion, and this remix keeps everything I like about the theme while punching it up. The remix is sharp and electronic while also bringing in a subtle menace befitting the wild environments Samus encounters aboard the B.S.L. Station. This is one of those golden remixes that surpasses the original without obsoleting it.
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐️⭐️

New Game Lab Post!
Tumblr media
This week's Game Lab post is about teamwork in TTRPGs and how Chris Sellers of Hectic Electron made it phenomenal in Raccoon Sky Pirates! I discuss how most games fall short and versions of collaborative actions that feel as interactive at the table as they do in the fiction. I touch on teamwork mechanics in Blades in the Dark by John Harper and Evil Hat Productions, and Stonetop by Jeremy Strandberg and penny lantern. Check it out!

Adventure Paths & Strategy Guides
Tumblr media
Those of you who keep track of this blog may have noticed that my updates have dried up since September. I have a good reason for this, because I got a new fulltime job writing for Rock Paper Shotgun. Yep, that's right - after originally starting Pixel Grotto back in 2013 because I couldn't get a job working at a video game media outlet, finally my path has come full circle. It only took a decade!
This turn of events coincides with a lot of other stuff in my life. In the past year, I've gotten married, moved from the US to the UK with my wife, and been freelancing in the tabletop RPG space all the while. In fact, my first published TTRPG work is now out in the wild in the form of Pathfinder Adventure Path #198 - With No Breath To Cry. Go grab a PDF (or physical copy) if you can, since I wrote some creepy lore about a new demon vaguely influenced by Chinese yaoguai and Japanese yokai, not to mention all sorts of Asian horror movies. I'm actually more pleased with my contributions to Pathfinder Adventure Path #199, but that doesn't come out until January. Keep your eyes peeled for it though!
Needless to say, this has probably been the most hectic and life-changing year I've gone through since 2018, when I moved from Hong Kong back to the US. And as 2023 comes to a close, I'm feeling reflective. I compare myself with others a lot, and much of my life has been spent looking at the accomplishments of people around me and feeling like I don't measure up. While I still do this to varying degrees, I suppose I can finally acknowledge that two of the goals I've always had - 1) to work in the gaming industry to some capacity, and 2) to see my writing published - have manifested in 2023. If I could venture back to 2013 when I started this blog (with a post about eating dumplings while playing Final Fantasy XII, no less) and tell my old self what he'd be up to a decade later, younger Jeremy would be chuffed.
That's another thing of note: as of this past October, Pixel Grotto turned a decade old. Technically, the site is even older than that, since prior to Pixel Grotto, I used this Tumblr for a blog dubbed Aqua Headphones that was sort of a mixture of personal ramblings combined with reblogs of whatever I found cool on the internet at the time. Since then, I've written an awful lot about video games, which led to writing about tabletop games, which led to working in both fields in a professional capacity.
It's surreal to examine my goals and observe how they unfolded in unusual ways. My original desire to work in games media came from the childhood magazines that I loved - Computer Gaming World and Electronic Gaming Monthly - and when those went the way of the dodo, I became a journalist with the sly hope that maybe one day I'd get a job working at Kotaku or something. But I finally got my gaming gig not at an American site, but a British one. And I'm writing guides, which is not something I initially envisioned myself doing. It's tricky work where we often have the chase the reins of the most popular franchises (I now know more about Modern Warfare 3 guns than I ever imagined I would), but it's also fun, since it reminds me of days spent perusing GameFAQs and leafing through physical strategy guides, several of which I still own. Versus Books' Final Fantasy VII and Ocarina of Time Perfect Guides remain on my shelf alongside Prima's Quest for Glory guides and Peter Spear's The King's Quest Companion...and while I can't do my current work in the same format of these gems (many of which were "novelizations," a style of guide writing I really miss), it does feel trippy to be following in their footsteps.
I could say the same thing about getting my words published. As a kid, I forever wanted to pen the next great fantasy novel. And while I've got more than a few discarded novel drafts sitting on my hard drive, the field of fantasy fiction isn't the one that's bearing my first printed work. Instead, it's modules and supplementary books in the fantasy tabletop gaming space - a space that has let me develop and externalize some of the plots and characters that have been gestating in my head since childhood. To a certain extent, that childhood desire to be the next great Tolkien has lessened as a result of this, and I can't say I'm displeased. I'm also happy that my first published work has been in a Pathfinder Adventure Path, because once again thinking about magazines, Adventure Paths remain one of the few remaining publications in the TTRPG space that bear some resemblance to old issues of Dragon magazine, and the nostalgia makes me happy.
I don't like to spend much time on this blog talking about myself, because there are always new ways to incite comparison to others and activate the inferiority complex in my brain. But at the end of a very long 2023 and on the tenth anniversary of the name "Pixel Grotto," I feel like it's necessary. As we move on to year eleven, I'll continue to make posts as long as my schedule permits it - after all, I can't let this blog fall to the wayside seeing as how its existence contributed a great deal to the opportunities that I now enjoy!

Connection Part 13-Close Call
RED: What’s it like? Dreaming?
Leann let out an almighty yawn and tried to ignore the taste in her mouth. She’d slept like a corpse last night and awoke to her alarm blaring. Still dressed in yesterday’s clothes and hair an absolute disaster, she plugged the GameBoy into the charger and set it on the night table.
“I’ll have to tell you about that later, Red. I need to get ready.” She was always so meticulous about her nighttime routine. It stunned her that she’d not only slept in her day clothes, but also forgot to brush her teeth or even crawl under the covers. She reasoned that she was simply tired from all that had recently transpired. Some breakfast and a fast shower would do the trick.
She was out of the house in no more than fifteen minutes.
Red was once again left to his thoughts. Out of nowhere, he pondered why she never brought the game with her. He immediately knew it to be a foolish idea; her bullies would be all-too-happy to snatch the thing and break it if they saw it. Still, he wanted to know what school was like. Partially because he was genuinely curious but also because his paranoia was still whispering at the back of his mind.
He’d also like at least one opportunity to give those bastard kids who tormented her a taste of their own medicine.
The sound of the bedroom door opening startled him. The footsteps didn’t sound like Leann’s and he was already making the game appear normal by the time they stopped near the bed. He heard a voice—her mother—let out a ‘tsk.’
“I swear, she’s just as cluttered as her father,” she said, taking in the hectic state of the room. The bed, night table, and floor were the only areas somewhat devoid of stuff. Although the bed was unmade and the floor still had a few odds and ends scattered about that could do some damage if she didn’t watch where she was going.
The only pristine surface in the room was the night table that held the newly-bought Game Boy. Leann had been absolutely enthralled with the thing since getting it. Katherine wasn’t surprised that Leann had thrown herself headfirst into yet another ‘project’ or whatever she was calling them now. She played it off like she was just really enjoying a kid’s game, but judging by the computer junk on the desk and the code she’d been working on a while ago it was obviously much more than that.
She picked up the scratched red console, bemused by how small it was in her hands, and absently inspected the game. She wasn’t into technology or games like her daughter, but even she could see how ancient the thing was. It was also strange that it was left on. Leann had kept the last one plugged in all the time and it had died, so why do the same thing with this one? She wasn’t going to buy another one if it happened again, and she wasn’t keen on hearing Leann whine about it either. It didn’t take her long to find the power switch.
Red was aware of the console being shifted in her hands and knew what was about to happen. He didn’t want to be in the dark again but he also knew she wouldn’t leave unless the game shut off. He wasn’t stupid enough to reveal himself to her just to stop it.
He’d be fine for a little while. Leann would be back well before he’d succumb to the nothingness.
His paranoia said otherwise. So many what-ifs… So many ways Leann could be later than usual. Too many possibilities with the game itself. What if it glitched and deleted the save? What if it deleted him and he lost everything again! He couldn’t just let it turn off but it couldn’t stay on either-
Katherine flicked the switch and watched the screen go dark. She flipped it closed and set it back on the table. She suspected this little sign of entry to Leann’s room would bring her downstairs with questions. Leann had few complaints, but one thing that set her off was people messing with her electronics. She let out a sigh. She’d never understand the girl’s obsession with these things.
Taking one last look around at the mess, she shut the door behind herself and made a mental note to tell Leann to clean up after school.
Red relaxed as the footsteps faded away. He could breath again. Opening his eyes brought him back into the bright void he liked to exist in when no one was playing. That had been too close. He wasn’t going to get Leann in trouble by revealing his existence, but he also wasn’t going to be left in the dark again. He panicked so much he momentarily forgot he could control the game now.
It was fortunate that he was such a stubborn bastard.

The Great Pre-Move Purge: Declutter, Donate, and Pack Like a Pro with Super Man and Van Excel East London
If you’ve ever unboxed a tangle of old phone chargers in your new flat and wondered why on earth did I pay to move this?—you’re not alone. Clutter creeps up on everyone, and relocating is the perfect excuse to hit reset. Yet most East Londoners leave the clear-out until the eleventh hour, turning moving day into a costly game of “take it or trash it.” Cue Super Man and Van Excel East London and their game-changing Pre-Move Purge service: a streamlined system that trims van loads, slashes landfill waste, and even scores you a warm fuzzy feeling when your unwanted goods find a new home.
Why Decluttering Before You Pack Pays Off
Lower Removal Costs – Fewer boxes equal fewer labour hours and a smaller van.
Faster Unpacking – Only what you truly need lands on the other side, so new-home chaos stays minimal.
Greener Footprint – Donated items avoid landfill; recycled tech gets a second life.
Mental Clarity – A tidy space (and inbox) makes decision-making easier during the hectic weeks before a move.
By combining professional movers with a donation and recycling network, Super Man and Van Excel East London turns decluttering from dreaded chore into a single, organised phase of your moving plan.
Step 1: The 30-Day Countdown—Sort & Label
Four weeks out, block one hour per evening and tackle cupboards in bite-size zones. Use four sturdy tubs or piles:
Keep – Daily essentials and high-value items.
Donate – Clothes, homeware, toys in good nick.
Recycle – Electronics, batteries, worn textiles.
Dispose – Broken, soiled, or out-of-date goods.
As tubs fill, slap colour-coded stickers on each. Super Man and Van Excel crews recognise these stickers on arrival, so loading is instinctive: blue for charity drop, green for recycling centre, red for landfill (rarely used).
Pro tip: If you haven’t worn or used it in the last 12 months—and it isn’t a seasonal or sentimental item—move it to Donate or Recycle.
Step 2: Donation Pick-Up—Your Clutter Gets a Second Life
Two weeks before moving day, book a free donation collection through the customer portal. Vans swing by at your chosen time slot and whisk away anything marked “Donate.” Items go straight to partner charities in Hackney, Newham, and Tower Hamlets—helping furnish emergency housing and community projects. Clients report cutting van loads by up to 25 percent through this single visit, which means a leaner final quote from Super Man and Van Excel East London.
Step 3: Tech & Textile Recycling—Data Safety Included
Old laptops and phones can’t head to the tip. Hand them to the crew in sealed e-waste bags; devices are wiped to GDPR standards, then recycled through certified East London facilities. Worn-out jeans, towels, or duvets become industrial rags or insulation. Recycling receipts sit in your online dashboard—handy proof for eco-conscious landlords or businesses.
Step 4: Premium Packing—Only the Best Makes the Box
A week out, professional packers arrive with reusable crates, wardrobe rails, and acid-free tissue. Because clutter has already vanished, they pack at speed, cutting labour costs and preventing that dreaded “miscellaneous” box from materialising. Labels list destination rooms and brief contents (e.g., “KITCHEN: mugs & cafetière”), making new-home setup intuitive.
Need to DIY pack? Order the Purge-Friendly Kit: recycled-content cartons, paper tape, and marker pens delivered next-day via Super Man and Van Excel East London.
Step 5: Moving Day—Light Load, Clear Mind
Because duplicates and junk are long gone, loading is quicker and vans run lighter—saving fuel and cash. Items head directly to their designated rooms at the new address, preserving the streamlined vibe you earned during the purge. Unpacking feels less like archaeology and more like styling a curated space.
Quick-Fire Declutter Hacks for Busy Londoners
The Hanger Trick – Hang clothes backwards; anything still reversed after six months gets donated.
One-In, One-Out Rule – When purchasing new décor or tech in the run-up to moving day, pledge to remove one comparable item.
Digital Declutter – Delete files and unsubscribe from mailing lists while queueing for coffee; mental clutter counts too.
Photo Memories – Snap pictures of sentimental but bulky items (kids’ artwork, old trophies) before letting them go.
The “Maybe” Box – Seal a box of undecided items; if you don’t open it within six months post-move, donate it unopened.
The Takeaway: Streamline Your Life Before You Shift It
Decluttering isn’t about discarding memories; it’s about choosing what deserves the cost, space, and energy of a fresh start. With free charity collections, eco-friendly recycling, and expert packing baked into one seamless timeline, Super Man and Van Excel East London makes it effortless to purge the excess and relocate only what you love.
Ready to lighten the load—literally and figuratively? Book your Pre-Move Purge consultation today through Super Man and Van Excel East London and step into your new home with space to breathe, room to grow, and a removal bill that’s leaner than you ever imagined.

Creating a Biophilic Office: The Role of Planters in Workplace Design
Employees in today's hectic workplace spend an excessive quantity of their time indoors. Biophilic office design has become a game-changer as businesses look to improve productivity and well-being in the workplace. Planters and indoor greenery are among the easiest but most efficient methods to add biophilic features to an modern office planters.
Let's explore the significance of planters in office design and the reasons why companies have to follow this trend.
Biophilic office design: What is it?
To strengthen the bond between humans and the natural world, biophilic design is an architectural concept that incorporates natural aspects into constructed habitats. It has ventilation, water elements, natural lighting, and—above all—plants. This concept affects employee productivity, creativity, and well-being; it's not just about looks.
Understand the role of planters in workplace design
Improving employee health and stress reduction
Studies have indicated that adding plants to one's workstation can considerably lower levels of stress, anxiety, and exhaustion. A peaceful environment is facilitated by greenery, which enhances mental and emotional well-being. Reduced stress and increased job satisfaction are common among employees in biophilic workplaces.
Enhancing air quality
Because of the contaminants from air conditioners, furniture, and electronic devices, indoor air pollution is a big problem in workplace settings. Toxins are filtered, oxygen levels are raised, and cleaner indoor planters air is promoted by planters full of air-purifying plants including peace lilies and snake plants.
Improving aesthetics and office branding
Strategically placing planters can improve a workspace's aesthetic appeal. Larger statement pieces can act as design focal points, while sleek, contemporary planters go well with minimalist workplace décor. Moreover, company logos on custom-branded planters can improve corporate identification and provide a distinctive workplace atmosphere.
Reduction in noise pollution
Open-plan workplaces frequently have noise problems that hinder concentration and communication. As natural sound absorbers, plants lower background noise and provide a calmer workplace. Without walls or other partitions, well-positioned planters can effectively divide areas and provide privacy.
A biophilic office transforms the workplace and improves productivity, creativity, and well-being. It's more than simply a design trend. By adding plants to your workspace, you can maintain a good brand image and create a well-being-promoting ambiance.
We at JP Planters provide a large selection of stylish, premium planters that will add nature to your workplace. Explore the perfect planters for your office now.
