Ok,,, now for lore time - let it be known I suck absolute ass at writing and wording things so... bear with me. Vynn is her actual name but she actually went by "Hemlock" and did miscellaneous work for quite a while. She met Sevika during that time in a bar fight and they became business associates (aka "you need someone beat up? I got you covered.") and later friends. Vynn gets into a lot of fights but she can stand her ground very well. Fueled by unstoppable rage, you see. She also has quick fingers, easy to pickpocket topside pansies and slip poison into drinks. Stuff like that.

Her actual meeting with Silco happened when Vynn fucked up a mission Sevika put her on without Silco's direct knowledge. Sevika put a lot of trust into Vynn and didn't think it was possible for the legendary Hemlock to fumble a mission so badly. She actually showed up absolutely thrashed (that's where she got her scars from!!) in Silco's office and faced the music. As a second chance (and also a way to keep her head) she's been working directly for him as a way to "redeem herself". SO TLDR she's a henchman. Henchwoman. Whatever. She does muscle work, smuggling, stealing - whatever needs to be done to kick topside in the shins. She actually has an unreasonable amount of hatred for Piltover and blames Piltover and its citizens for literally any bad thing that happens ever. YEAH SO MOB BOSS X HENCHMAN SLOW BURN HAHAAA

Episode 3 Rewatch: "Manga Based TV Drama"

YEAH WE'RE BACK ON THESE AGAIN!!! As much fun as the liveblog format was, I found it was actually getting in the way of me *doing* the liveblog (it could take multiple hours for me to watch and queue up One Single Episode) so I've decided to return to a format a bit more like my chapter reviews just in the desperate hopes of getting these actually done before season 2 airs. In the immortal words of Brian H oobh i got plany off time. But let's get to it real quick anyway!!!

I have a really soft spot in my heart for episode 3 in particular because it was the first episode I actually anticipated watching after I got into the show - episodes 1 & 2 were already out when I fully contracted brainworms so episode 3 was the first one I had to actually wait for. A lot of the cuts from it are like carved into my brain because I watched that episode preview so many times while waiting for it to air lol…

I've said this before but the anime's take on her really is what turned me into an active Kana Enjoyer. Megumi Han's delightful performance and her character acting an animation all combine to make it really hard not to be endeared to her. Her excitement at being reunited with Aqua is really cute, too - I remember Han saying that she was specifically told not to play Kana as a girl meeting an old crush but as someone excitedly reuniting with an old friend and I think that's particularly sweet. The AQKN dynamic at its heart is kind of just two lonely kids who don't have a lot of other connections that aren't couched in transactional utility creating a space together where they can just exist without any ulterior motives.

gotanda's words being visualized as literally skewering kana is so fucking funny too. bro killed her. you really can't blame her for biting back during dinner later lol

Kana's putting on a pretty positive face about it, but knowing how deeply alone and abanoned she feels by her parents, it's hard to not feel really sad about this scene. She's chipper about it but this is the first hint towards Kana's current honestly kind of dire circumstances we'll see get expanded on all the way to the end of the anime.

Aqua's refusal to let Kana see his old acting is also really interesting to me. Intentionally or not, it feels like it's sewing the seeds for some stuff in Tokyo Blade; Aqua respects Kana's acting and Kana herself as a professional to the degree that he doesn't want to 'lose' to her in that sense. Or rather, he'd be embarrassed to have someone he respects seeing him stumble like that - a little like Ruby's freakout in episode 1 over the idea of Ai, specifically, seeing her be bad at dancing.

Aqua trying to play it cool and then immediately nerding out when Kana mentions Sweet Today is so so so so soooooooo cute. I love it when that side of his personality pokes out…

KABURAGI NAMEDROP JUMPSCARE!!!!! i made the same face, aqua... I won't go into my Kaburagi Villain Propaganda here, but it really is so deeply suspicious that Kaburashi was on her oldest, most private phone…

KANA'S LITTLE 'I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE' MOMENT………. AQUMELT REAL AFTER ALL…. (NOT CLICKBAIT)

ruby's lain brand milk vexes and haunts me

Aqua's quietly pained, guilty expression when Ruby misreads his intentions for becoming an actor is so good, as is his cold internal dismissal of Ai's wish… it's funny to see him insisting he's not doing this for Ai's sake when really, everything Aqua does comes back to his mom.

Man, though. What even is there to say about the Sweet Today bits lmao. Holy shit. Particular shout out to Melt's seiyuu, Seiji Maeda, for making his in-character acting so authentically awkward and clunky without it coming off as overwrought or like he himself was giving a bad performance. That's suuuuuch a delicate thread to weave but he does it exceptionally well.

This scene also has one of my all time favourite punch ups from the manga - in the original, Ruby just kind of gets the manga from nowhere and makes the comparisons that way but the anime makes Aqua the one to go get his copy and start silently flipping through it to compare until Ruby snatches it… it really is the perfect teeing up for him to run off and tattle to Kana even though he was pretending he didn't give a shit lol. Dork ass boy.

This talk at the karaoke bar is really good, too. The directing is pretty simply but I feel like the anime producton really shows off just how strong its expression and character acting work is here which does a lot to help along what's otherwise a very static conversation. The contrast in Aqua and Kana's energy is also very fun - Aqua's really still while Kana's very animated.

The manga hasn't really touched on this in a while but the content of the conversation here also starts a thread that I really liked in the early parts of Oshi no Ko about how hard it is to create good art in an environment like the entertainment industry. Tokyo Blade centers this more and is almost explicitly a follow up to Sweet Today's exploration of this idea but the seeds are sewn here, of the necessary compromises that need to be made just to get something out the door and how that can ultimately destroy the final product no matter how many well-meaning and passionate people are doing their absolute best to make something worth engaging with.

i'm also pretty sure this talk is the first time we see aqua smile after episode 1… cute.

The directing also really shines in that little moment at the end where Kana grabs Aqua's hand. In prior cuts, the two are visually separated in that they're both sat apart and there are multiple lines running between them in the background to section them off from each other.

But then just as Kana breeches Aqua's defenses and disarms him, she physically reaches past all these little barriers to finally get into his space. It's subtle but well done.

His wide-eyed slightly stunned face is also really sweet. We see this look on Aqua a lot when it comes to Kana and it always makes me smile a bit. She's excellent at getting under his skin whether she means to or not.

"now my body has caught up with my mental age" says aqua, confirming his mental age is that of a teenager, and mfs are still out here acting like he's a 30 year old man.

Oof, oof and oof. Kana's little speech here already makes me so soft and knowing how it's going to be utterly spat upon in just a moment by Kaburagi's callousness towards her just makes it hurt even more. We continually see reference to this supposed good relationship between Kana and Kaburagi during this episode and so knowing that he's ultimately just another shitty adult taking advantage of her clear desperation… masaya kaburagi when i see you it's on sight

This is also a really fantastic character moment for Aqua, I think. He himself says he's done everything he needed to do on set, so there's no need for him to start shit like he does. It's purely out of respect and fondness for Kana as a person and anger on her behalf as a fellow actor. For as much as Aqua likes to convince himself he's a coldhearted bastard, he really just cannot help himself when it comes to leaping in and helping people. He's a lot like Ai in that once somebody has his heart, he's theirs for good.

i also just have to fucking Scream at this cut of him. it hit me like a fucking TRUCK when this episode dropped. because it doesn't quite look like the equivalent panel of the manga, does it?

so i wasn't gonna make a separate post about this but @sapphire-weapon had a post (that i reblogged a few days ago) in which someone mentioned that they think it was a missed opportunity in RE6 for jake to not have spoken to wesker. i had a p long conversation with sirea about it and my thoughts about that sentiment, but it was also nearly 3 AM my time when that happened so i dunno if i was even articulating my thoughts properly lmao

and yes... this is technically a meta post and i know i said i was gonna do the mmx meta post first... but this one isn't gonna be nearly as long (i hope) and i gotta get the brainworms out before i die

(quick edit note: i reworded the list item below from saying he was "likely a drug addict" to "likely a recreational drug user" because i feel like that better encompasses what i'm trying to get across

so the idea that wesker being alive in OG RE6 would have brought an opportunity for jake's character is kinda, imo, antithetical to the purpose of jake's character in the first place.

when we meet jake, we know a few things about him, right off the bat:

he's a mercenary

he's likely a recreational drug user or at least heavy/risk-taking user

he doesn't give a fuck about anything but making money

his whole character journey is going from this selfish, money-focused dickhead to someone who actually cares about doing something good, just because it's the right thing to do. at the start, jake refuses to simply give his blood away when sherry mentions needing it for a vaccine. no, he wants a cash payout. 50 million dollery-doos for a pint of his blood. by the end, he lowers the price to a mere 50 dollars. one could argue that was symbolic and he actually didn't care if he was paid or not, but that's neither here nor there.

but why was he like this? because his childhood was shite; his mother was sickly, he had no father figure, and by 15-ish, jake had to learn how to hustle to keep food on the table. and by "hustle" i mean "do a bunch of mercenary work and killing people." and when shit went south with his little group of mercenaries (their entire group was sold out by a heel-turner), jake basically went "fuck alla y'all" and lost all sense of conviction or morals.

during the game, he expresses his bitterness for his father, wesker, pretty clearly. even though his mother still loved wesker, tried to raise jake to respect him despite never knowing him, it didn't matter to jake. he hated that guy. well, really, who doesn't?

we're not gonna talk about excella rn ok

jake's entire character arc is built up around this hatred as well as a subconscious fear of becoming his father. the fear part doesn't show up until later in the story, after he and sherry were captured by the Big Bad's organization. they were both experimented on for several months, during which jake overheard the researchers talking about his father, wesker. this gives jake a sort of "explanation" as to why he is the way he is; he takes the "nature" side of the nature vs nurture argument.

ofc sherry scolds his ass and basically tells him "grow up and take responsibility for your actions."

and here's the thing... this fear, narratively, works just fine without wesker being there.

(since this got obscenely long, pls continue below for the actual explanation lmao)

jake eventually comes to the conclusion that yeah no it's definitely up to him to not become wesker, not his genetics. he does this without wesker being there. that's the entire point of his character journey. in order for an interaction with wesker to even matter or have any sort of impact on jake's character arc, his character arc as a whole would need to change.

see, imo, wesker being there diminishes a lot of the power of that journey. in the game, he isn't there for jake to scream at, to question. all those thoughts in his head that might be circulating around, like why he left his mother, why he did what he did, etc, cannot be answered. this is not a bad thing in a character arc as this is shit that happens to people all the time. people don't always get the answers they may want from family members because those family members are dead. they have to learn to move on without those answers or they have to rely on people who knew that person to fill in the blanks. this is what jake already does in game. he has to rely on sherry, and by a smaller extent, chris, to fill in those blanks for him.

but we as players, observers of the narrative, already know the answers to some of those questions. why wesker did what he did, primarily. anything else is only pertinent to jake and him knowing those answers doesn't change anything for his character arc as it is.

if wesker was there in the game, what would that even add to jake's narrative? a scene where jake yells at his dad? asks him "why did you leave?" when wesker wasn't even aware that he had a kid in the first place? remember: wesker had no fucking idea that he had a child. there would be no reason for wesker to even believe jake in the first place. sure, there could be a scene where he goes "well i'll be damned, ig he really is my misfired chromosome," but... then what? what does that add?

you could argue that wesker could use jake, maybe try to manipulate him into doing shit for his plans, but... that wouldn't work with the way jake's characterization is mapped out. his entire characterization would have to change for this to work in a satisfying way.

jake already hates wesker without ever meeting him. he would not willingly participate in anything wesker offered to him. he already knows that wesker nearly destroyed the world multiple times and had a hand in destroying an entire city. even if jake has no moral compass at the start of the game, by the time he learns about what wesker really did, who he really was, he's already showing that he does have one, it was just dormant up until that point. he's clearly disgusted by what wesker did. what foothold would wesker have that wouldn't immediately result in it just falling flat?

given how wesker is, i could see him perhaps belittling jake, maybe saying "wow you suck for being my spawn," or something during a fight with the intent to rile him up. would that work? no, not narratively nor not in the way jake is characterized. again, jake doesn't want to be like wesker. why would insulting him and saying he's not "as good" as wesker expected him to be motivate jake or even anger him? it shouldn't, because jake doesn't want to be anything like wesker. if anything, it may annoy him, but that's kind of a lame reaction, right?

if anything, the most i could see culminating out of this would be jake standing over wesker after he's defeated again (because it's resident evil and obviously wesker can't win) and having a "wow idk what i was worried about" moment. that's it.

but he doesn't need that. having a scene like that cheapens the weight of him figuring that out himself, without wesker there as "proof."

because the point of his story, of his character arc, is that he figures that out on his own (and with the help of sherry and the events he witnesses) because he has to. he doesn't need wesker there to spoon-feed that to him. he figures that out by working with sherry, by seeing the effects of the C-Virus on everything that it infects. wesker being an abstract entity in his life is enough, because the frustration of not seeing him, not being able to put a bullet in his skull himself, fuels the rest of his journey.

this is where i think that people who make these observations or criticisms (primarily those who think that jake's character would have been improved if wesker was there) need to understand the difference between what's good for a character as a person and what's good for their arc.

interacting with wesker would be good for jake as a person, in that he would no longer need to wonder about it. the answers would be spelled out for him, and he wouldn't have to do any wondering about the what-if. he wouldn't have any doubts left that he'd need to untangle.

but in doing that, it cheapens his arc; it would do more of a disservice to it, imo, than anything else. it would make his journey more formulaic and boring.

it would also clutter up the already cluttered narrative of that game. you have him not only struggling with his heritage, struggling with the fear of becoming his father, struggling with needing to be the "savior" by giving his blood, struggling with his moral compass, but now also struggling with seeing his father for the first time in person?

it makes his arc top-heavy. in that scenario, you could easily replace him with another, completely new character who has zero ties to wesker and the story wouldn't change in any meaningful way. the reason why it works the way to does now is because wesker is already dead. it creates that internal conflict, that internal frustration, that jake has to learn how to deal with since he cannot take that frustration out on his father in-person. he has to make peace with that struggle in other ways.

now, that's not to say there aren't ways that adding wesker into the story of RE6 that don't disrupt that balance. primarily, when it comes to a potential RE6 remake, the writing team can (and hopefully will) rework aspects of the entire game to make the plot more streamlined. this could include adding wesker in and redoing jake's characterization and character arc entirely.

this would be the only way i could see it working out. if jake's entire motivation was changed, his entire backstory was tweaked, then wesker being around could probably work! an interaction between them could be made to make sense and not bog down the rest of the plot as a result.

sirea also mentioned to me in our conversation that adding wesker in to RE6 remake could actually help streamline the plot and i do agree with that. she mentioned that all of the main characters have a tie to wesker in some way, which is absolutely true. having him there would neatly tie their campaigns together in the plotline and make the game as a whole feel less disjointed and messy.

this is especially true when we consider there are 4 fuckin campaigns that all run alongside one another and intersect at random points. it gets so fucking difficult to page through and figure out when certain things happen in the plot. you'll see them happen in order in chris's campaign, for example, then you go start leon's campaign and have to start over again and try to remember what happened at the same time during chris's campaign and so on.

now imagine that not with just two campaigns but four. it gets gross quick. sure, there are parts where the characters run into each other and that helps ground a general timeline in your head, but as far as time elapsed... it's so fuckin hard u guise

there's a reason why it's so hard to summarize the plot of RE6. it's because there is just so much going on in that fucking game.

anyway, that's my rant/sort of meta analysis about why i think wesker didn't need to be in OG RE6 and probably would have made jake's entire arc stupider than it already was

My brain has decided that Asakura is trans for some reason and I am using that as an excuse to infodump about him again (Also just how Asakura’s character pertains to societal gender roles. And it just kind of devolves into a general Asakura character analysis somewhat because I got sidetracked)

CW: spoilers as they pertain to Asakura’s character (including true route spoilers), all the potentially triggering themes of Asakura’s character (talking about pedophilia and POCD/OCD in general mostly and religious theming), discussions of transphobia and gender dysphoria, talk about sex as it pertains to POCD and gender dysphoria, one minor clean dishes spoiler randomly mentioned because this goes on far too many tangents lmao

Hyperfixated on Asakura again and the brainworms have started telling me he’s transgender because my music taste lately is mostly that specific genre of loud music made by transfems (Ada Rook, Black Dresses, Stomach Book, etc) and too many of their songs fit him. Songs that are about being discriminated against for being trans fit his story because transphobes see us as predators. ANYWAY my brain got confused about this and now will not stop making up more reasons why he is trans coded so I am going to explain myself to the probably two people who will get it. For context I am coming at this as a trans man myself and someone who generally thinks a lot about gender roles in society because of that! Also! I list the songs that made me think this at the bottom of this post so if you just want to skim through my lengthy infodump and scroll to the bottom to listen to those to get an idea of what the hell I’m talking about you can!

First off. His gender is exactly this to me

I think he’s some sort of agender/nonbinary and does not know!! I don’t know when he’d have the time to figure it out he’s going through a lot!! That is why I am mostly still going to use he/him throughout this post, for sake of ease (hard to talk about a character in a fandom using different pronouns than the rest of the fandom uses for them) and also I don’t think he’d get dysphoric about pronouns, if he ever WERE to figure it out imo he’d use any pronouns. I think he mostly gets dysphoric about the societal role of a man being forced onto him when it feels so unlike who he truly is. I mean specifically the societal role of all men being awful, capable of horrible crimes, people to be afraid of. Now I know people who say things like “all men are evil” are people who have been harmed by misogyny/the patriarchy and are aware that it’s not LITERALLY all men who are bad people. BUT there are people like Asakura who this stigma affects badly too, he’s got a terrible case of harm ocd, hearing people say shit like that while being seen as a man is obviously gonna get to him. That coupled with how many people are afraid of HIM because of the rumors, he can’t distance himself from that and tell himself he’s a good man so he’s not who they’re talking about. He’s the kind of man they hate, he’s the kind of man they’re afraid of, and he hates being seen like that more than anything. Now obviously this narrative could be true and he could still be a cis man but. I just think it makes it so much more interestingly fucked up if this role of a man was just thrusted on him since he was born and he spent his whole life being told he was a man by everyone around him and just accepting that but deep down it never really felt right. I mostly think it’d make sense if he was agender, but the type of agender who could go their whole life not knowing it because they are content enough with letting people perceive them how they wish. Except, he’s not content with it anymore because his thoughts about being perceived as a man are getting so wrapped up in his thoughts of being perceived as a pedophile that he’s just started to hate both of them? Most of this is unconscious, he doesn’t think about it hard enough to realize but this IS what his gender dysphoria looks like for him. I also think in general he is VERY sexually repressed, because it’s hard for him to think about sex at all without accidentally getting intrusive thoughts about children and then he ends up distressed and in an ocd thought spiral about it so he copes by just… avoiding anything sexual entirely as much as possible because he doesn’t want that to happen again. This is something I thought about before but I think it can pertain to gender dysphoria too? Lots of trans people will feel sex repulsed sometimes when the dysphoria is bad, because there’s societal gender roles placed on our bodies and what kind of sex we’re “supposed” to have with them and it can just… get too icky to think about for too long when you are in a bad headspace. Asakura’s idea of that is just even further skewed by the fact that his ocd is making him see being seen as a man sexually as being seen as a future sex offender and he cannot handle that thought at all, so this specific type of dysphoria is very extreme for him. Note that people with intrusive thoughts like this and with dysphoria can of course still be sexual sometimes when they are in a healthier mindset but. I think at the time in his life we see Asakura in canon his pocd is at its worst so he’s not really getting many breaks to have a good mindset. I think he needs to go to therapy and unlearn all this shit and get medicated so that he can start to heal!! I think that’d help out his mindset on all this stuff and how he sees gender A LOT to the point that he might even get enough insight to actually figure out his gender. Even if he’s not a man the way he views being seen as one isn’t healthy whatsoever, and I think working on the ocd aspect there would help with the dysphoria aspect too.

I also think he was at least a little bit groomed by that college professor of his and has trauma from that and that’s affecting how he views men too. That man was someone’s he respected and viewed as a good man, and that view of him was ripped to shreds and completely betrayed as he LITERALLY TOOK HIM TO A CHILD BROTHEL AND COERCED HIM INTO CUTTING A CHILD WHILE HE WAS TOO DRUNK TO KNOW WHAT HE WAS DOING. This event is what traumatized him into developing pocd in the first place. It showed him that even “good” men can turn out to be horrible on the inside. So what if that’s true of him too? Even now that he’s moved to Shinkoumi and is seen as a “good man” by most of his patients and their families what if he’s lying to all of them? Misleading them like his professor did to him? Pocd is often developed due to past trauma from this type of grooming. How far it went outside of canon material can be left up to the imagination but. Even strictly going by only what we know, he learn that the teacher he looked up to he found out was likely a pedophile (why else would he know of that place? I think it was implied he probably went himself before?) and tried to rope him into it, using his respect for him to his advantage to get his inhibitions down and manipulate him into doing something horrible. Even just that is traumatic as hell.

ALSO let me tell you about how I think the societal role expected of a woman, especially when paired with the purity culture aspect that comes from Christianity, fit his character too. I think I might need to tell you about my dad first?? A lot of this aspect of my headcanon is inspired by my dad, I can explain it better if I explain how it relates to them. So, my dad is genderfluid, and repressed this and any sort of queerness in general until their mid/late 40s due to how they were raised. They only realized they were genderfluid after I came out as trans and they did a lot of research on trans people to be as supportive as they could be to me, and accidentally found out that THEY related to a lot of this too. Anyway, they strongly associate their feminine side WITH their role as me and my sister’s parent. They were the stay at home parent, they took care of us and played the stereotypical role of a mother, so they’ve always felt more like a mother to us than a father. They saw their femininity in their caring parental nature, and that’s EXACTLY why I connect Asakura to that same type of femininity, especially being in his 40s and repressing his identity so hard he hasn’t figured it out yet too. I don’t know I just love my dad so it makes me sympathize hard with older queer people just starting to figure things out. Anyway. BASICALLY this part of the headcanon/how Asakura’s character pertains to gender roles is talking about how a woman in society is seen as a caregiver and protecter of children. The exact opposite of how Asakura’s mentally ill brain is boiling down the role of a man as someone who will HURT children. And like. Asakura has such strong instincts to want to protect children I think?? I know he tells Towa he doesn’t want to have kids, but he would have made a great parent and I think he would have WANTED kids, if it weren’t for the pocd. I think he could still get a lot of fulfillment out of that if he was ever able to heal enough to care for a child without hurting his own mental health and putting the child at risk. Like.. obviously I don’t think he’s going to act on his intrusive thoughts but. He can’t be a good caregiver if he’s having them and getting distressed because of his child constantly and maybe trying to avoid interacting with them out of fear. ALSO you saw what happened to Hayato when he was circumstantially thrown into taking care of a child at his worst, he got so delusional about the angel thing that he almost tried to sew wings into him (I think the angel thing is an extreme case of a compulsion to the pocd, if he convinces himself he sees children as pure angels it calms his intrusive thoughts/obsessions about them.) Anyway while I think he did this because he was so unwell that he legitimately thought it was the only way to protect him from him from himself, Hayato still almost got really hurt and Towa, while consensually, DID get hurt. So like Asakura would need to do a LOT of healing before ever being responsible for a child most definitely.

But… he does genuinely love children in a normal way, he cares about them a lot. Why do you think he chose to dedicate his life to their care as a pediatrician? Why do you think he tried his best to take care of Hayato when his mother left him with him, even when it was making him feel horrible? That parental/motherly nature of his is the reason he couldn’t let himself just abandon Hayato too when he needed him. I think he didn’t want to be around him any more than he had to of course, I think he only meant it to be a short term thing and was trying to find someone better fit to take care of him because he was scared of what he’d do to him and trying to protect him from that. But Shinkoumi is a dystopian hell and they probably don’t have many good systems set up for orphans. There’s the facility that Shiro grew up in? I guess? But they didn’t seem all that great at like actually getting the kids adopted lmao they just sent him to live on his own at 13. I don’t know if there’s any proper fostering system and I wouldn’t be surprised if even orphanages like Shiro’s were few and far between. Even when Hayato DOES eventually get sent somewhere it’s on the mainland. Asakura was probably having a hard time finding anything and too paranoid to ask for help and get others involved. And… maybe a little worried about if they’ll actually take care of Hayato properly and not just neglect him? And he cares about him and doesn’t want to have to abandon him now that Hayato’s gotten attached to him right after his mother did? And the harm ocd might be spiraling about that too because he knows that that abandonment and being sent to a neglectful orphanage WILL traumatize him and he is just left paralyzed and unable to make a decision on what is best to do because the kid NEEDS a parent, and that’s not an option, but he is seeing Asakura as his parent now and he wishes he could be that for him but he can’t. Hayato’s mother abandoned him and gave him to him, maybe he could be the new mother? Or play the role of a mother? At least for a little bit until he gets someone else to take care of him? I think he tried his very best to do that in the time Hayato was under his care. I think he knows how to take children well, I mean he went to medical school specializing in pediatrics, I’m sure that talks about general childcare at least a bit. He has to know how to tell parents how to care for their children properly, I’m sure he knows enough to take care of a kid himself at least short term too.

ANYWAY I am getting sidetracked just. Also the purity culture part, a lot of Asakura’s character is about wanting to be pure and good in a religious kinda way? Of course purity culture can affect anyone but it’s especially bad in women growing up in religious environments so that’s the connection there. Women are expected to be pure because misogyny. While I think the motherly/caring feminine association reflects his genuine self, the purity culture side of it reflects the compulsions he engages in to convince himself that IS his genuine self and not the “evil man” perception people put onto him. Asakura’s entire character is way more interesting if you look at everything through the lens of an ocd cycle of obsessions and compulsions. The fear and paranoia about being a pedophile is the obsession, the fixation on being “forgiven” and seeing children as angels and wanting to create an angel is the compulsion. So my thought process is wouldn’t it be so cool if I made Asakura’s entire character a metaphor on societal gender roles too?? Using how his pocd functions AS that metaphor?? Being seen as and therefore believing he is a horrible evil man is the obsession, wanting to be a good pure Christian girl and repress any sexual thought (the intrusive ones AND any of them outside of that because he’s started to believe those are evil too), to validate the person he truly is is the compulsion. No this isn’t like “being trans is ocd.” Obviously. It’s a metaphor. I’m using Asakura as a metaphor for being trans. Again I don’t think he consciously thinks about this shit this is just an unconscious thought process that relates to the rest of his character and the rest of his character is mostly about having pocd. AND this is why I feel like it fits him best to truly be agender/nonbinary instead of JUST a woman either. He’s been raised in a society with strict gender roles and is just fixated on both of these roles in different ways while he’s not really either. I DO think he has some femininity to him but in a nonbinary sorta way, like not ALL of that role is fake but like. He needs to unlearn how he sees gender so bad. But I mean he DOES have feminine aspects of his design in canon he has pretty long hair and pretty long eyelashes lol. Do you see it. I’ve been calling him my wife for months now just because. He just has a feminine aura about him I hope by now you get what I mean.

BUT the issue is that trans people, especially transfems are seen even MORE as just horrible predatory men trying to groom children by our society at large (and transphobia and Christianity DOES have a big overlap unfortunately, it fits the theming) so… he can’t just accept he might be anything but a cis man even when he hates being a man without being a type of person that’s seen even more as a possible threat to children. He can’t be a good Christian girl because he wasn’t born as a girl so it’s a lose lose situation until he gets THERAPY FINALLY. Get Asakura a good therapist and ocd meds and hrt he’ll be happier trust me. Does this make sense. Has anyone even read this whole post I know it’s really long and the fandom doesn’t care about him. This is. The direct result of getting a hyperfixation on Stomach Book’s music last month. Did y’all even know that the song Fukuona Girl that was all over reels platforms as a popular audio a while back was about being trans? And it just uses the lyrics about the infamous Fukuona Shoujo gif where the little anime girl gets flayed alive as a metaphor? For being discriminated against for being trans because maybe transphobes want to do that to us? I ALSO think the theming of the gorey anime girl part fits super well for Asakura’s intrusive thoughts though especially since she looks young. It can also be about him being tormented by his intrusive thoughts. Is he the fukuona girl or are his intrusive thoughts? Kind of both? (I’m aware this song def fits Towa too lol but shh it can be a little bit about Towa tormenting Asakura his entire chapter and the parallels between how their stories connect and Asakura’s entire mental illness being spawned off of what he was manipulated into doing to Towa as a child and how he gets intrusive thoughts about that and stuff too)

I think Kenzie's mom and dad is an interesting contrast to Carol and Mark, imo, and in many ways feel more similar to the fanon New Wave parents you see in bad fanfiction.

Both sets of parents are abusive, but they cover two different sides of the abusive: the Martins cover the physical and Dallons emotional/mental.

Mrs. Martin and Carol are the more obvious hate-sinks: both are vocal and headstrong (not to mention proud of themselves), but where Mrs. Martin holds no compunctions with beating Kenzie repeatedly, Carol's abuse is more like a scalpel (saying the wrong/right words or using poignant silence and stares to get a message across). Carol would be horrified at the act of lashing out physically (not that she hasn't come close or been tempted ofc; see her interlude), while Mrs. Martin would likely not even begin to understand subtlety. Funny enough, both even talk about how their jobs are more about supporting people rather than taking the lead (though that may be Carol specifically acting humble; epilogues show this is not the case). Carol does end up apologizing for her actions and seems to, on a level, recognize that her daughters will be distant from her because of her actions. Not to say she's 100% better, but that she has a chance for growth.

Mr. Martin and Mark are overlooked, because they are more than willing to let their wives take the heat, but that doesn't mean they aren't massive fuck ups either. Mr. Martin clearly has no love for Kenzie and blames her mere existence for causing his wife to lash out, and in general tries to act as the belabored husband dealing with two non-negotiable women. He will raise his hands and step aside while his wife beats his child repeatedly. Mark is more complicated, but the end result does tend to have the same outcome. This is not to disparage his depression, but it's clear that Mark has more power in the relationship than he lets on (he was the one who pressured Carol to have Victoria AND to quit therapy, while she was going through law school, just because he didn't like therapy!) and that at some point he decided that his children did not need him to parent them (see: his talk to Victoria about how he never needed to check on her). Victoria even notes that his visits began to slow down once he realized she was conscious in the asylum, and we see that he will enable Amy even when she tried to murder Sveta (aka someone he called "family") until Victoria pushed him. It's only by the book end that he decides to put his foot down and seek out ways to remove himself from an unhealthy marriage, and perhaps seek out help in a different country.

(I know I gave the men more focus, but that's because the story tends to focus more on the wives, and I feel like it made some readers forget/overlook their awful behavior)

HOLY SHIT. Hello I think it's so funny that someone screenshotted my Thropple thesis tags to share with the whole wide world because I am absolutely 100% correct but also jesus christ. hello people. Me personally I can't stop thinking about how they're God's perfect polycule. Like, everything crafted about them is deeply mundane, fucking off the rails bonkers, hysterical on a sitcom level, and deeply, incredibly tragic. They put everything in that polycule. They put crack cocaine in there. What's there to say about them? Where to even start? I'm obsessed with them and I think they're crazy people and I love them. I think they all hyphenate to Upland-Tigelaar because Elphaba refuses to have anything to do with the Thropp name and Fiyero refuses to let them all just take Tigelaar because he will not stand for erasing womens' identities. I think they all sleep in one huge bed like the Willy Wonka grandparents. I think Fiyero does hot Pilates on the weekends and Elphaba gets really into fishing and Glinda meticulously does the newspaper crossword in glittery pink ink. I could keep going. I won't because I actually want to be able to get to sleep tonight but boy do I stay up late thinking about these three jackasses. It's detrimental to my health. Piggy backing off of 3bskyen hour long video going over the trailer. I frimly believed time shenanigans was going to play a part in season 2 because Ekko didn't have his powers in season 1. An its a major part of his character no matter the universe. (Even the one where hes a rapper in a band.)

But i'm so glad someone else has the same brain worms that I do! Especially when it comes to alt timelines, time shenanigans.

Heres how I see it taking the trailer at face value. If we are going with the idea of alt timelines, and the need to give Ekko his powers. I think it starts with Jinx unknowning using whatever the magic. That allowd Ekko to do what he does in game. She messes it up some how and ends up in an alt timeline where she not a fuck up. She is held as a hero-

Personal side beef the reason im more willing to see this as a alt timeline is because it would be a little weird. If the black guy you cast as your revolutionary is upshured by his white counterpart. LISTEN i love Jinx but everything dealing with oppression and over coming that was place on Ekkos shoulder as he was part of the firelights. It would be weird to suddenly undo that unless the twist is this is how we vaildate Ekkos powers.

Ekkos whole deal is that he goes back until he gets it right. This could be a situation where they are fixing that narrative for Ekko. Its no longer we go back until its right. Its somethings are set in stone no matter what. But we can make it hurt less, we can make the cut not as deep. Jinx and Vi can never undo that night of tragedy. But it doesnt have to define your whole being, for the rest of your life.

It plays into his line "sometimes taking a leap forward leaving a few things behind." Leaping forward, going back to their timeline merging times etc.

There is a real possibilty thats not the case at all. We can all stay in the same timeline and things work like this. After things start getting bad, the attacking and most likely the wipping out of the firelights. Ekko and whos ever left has to go into hidding. Jinxs is held as a hero because shes is seen as the unattentional hero finally someone taking a stand. Instead of talking about peace , instead of asking for a softer boot on your neck. We no longer what a boot at all. An that is Jinxs arc is coming to terms with people looking for her to be a leader. When she still just a kid.

So, here's the thing about Jean's obsession: it's fuelled by a desire to hurt people and control people. He wants to steal his sweetheart away from someone he hates. He wants to play a game of cat and mouse with them. He wants to manipulate and abuse them, all while fucking them up so bad that they become helplessly devoted to him

However, he's never experienced love. Or even people wanting to be around him for any reason other than his money and fame. He's never been loved, cared for, obsessed over by someone who actually knows him. So once he gets a taste of that? It's addictive. It's a massive ego boost, and this man does not need more of an ego

If someone who actually knows him became obsessed with him, he'd see it as the perfect chance to control them. To take them, keep them as his own, keep getting that dopamine rush from their love. He will encourage their obsession and he'll use it to abuse them

Ok ok so I gotta know, what is Salice's dynamic with everyone in the party? Does she generally get along with them or would she feed them to the wolves if it wasn't for the brain worms?

SO ITS FUNNY. Salice is generally a kind of dry, sarcastic bitch that generally doesn't particularly enjoy 'befriending' people. The only person she's ever been truly friends with is her is her best friend & (previously) colleague Allen Owen, a wizard of the school of conjuration, who she met when she was studying law way long ago, like 10 years or so prior to the start of the story.

At the start she's kind of neutral towards everyone due to the Circumstances. she is kind of a bitch, and rude, but due to the situation (that being, you know, the brainworms and possible transformation into an illithid) she tries to be less of an asshole simply because she does not want to risk being killed by the few people she's met that are sound of mind and not Absolute fanatics

This is also me generally throwing spice on the concept as a whole since the game isn't really full ofliberties in terms of shaping your tav's personality. In general, she tries to do the good thing, but can be a dick about it, and isn't against doing scummy stuff if it means getting to the bottom of things or resolving matters without necessarily risking certain death. This means she's generally more likely to get along with Shadowheart, Wyll, Gale, and even Karlach. I imagine with Lae'zel and Astarion the relationship is definitely on the neutral side. She doesn't really hate anyone but doesn't really like Astarion tbh lol

She has issues with being closed-off and has difficulty opening up to people. She has a full-on machismo complex caused by her father and tends to be very competitive when it comes to putting in show her skills especially when she meets masculine people like her (regardless if they're men or not), HOWEVER...Circumstances make this a little easier to break through.

TO PUT IT SHORT BECAUSE I'M ALREADY RAMBLING:

Wyll: They're pretty good friends by the time of Act 2 (where I've played until now), they bond over the fact that they are warlocks stuck in bad contracts with bitch devils. Unfortunately he's genuinely a fully good person which means she feels too bad to truly talk to him about Her Contract and who Her Patron is bc it's a weird, and not exactly "good-natured" story lol. I imagine he thinks of her as someone he can relate to due to their similar situations but I can't think he'd be exactly approving of the selfish reasons behind her pact.

Gale: I have to be frank she initially finds him weird and awkward but very very fast starts liking him - he's the one she's most likely to get feelings for, truth be told, because Salice has a weakness for nerds of that type. That and it seems fated (to her) that she ends up being chummiest with wizards, for one reason or another. She does not handle her own feelings well tho so if I had to write the whole thing instead of having to follow the way the game does it it'd be a liiiiiiiiiittle complicated.

Because she probably does in fact NOT bathe that much during adventuring. Anyways . I can't fully develop thoughts now. Tl;dr they get along well. Much to everyone's surprise

Astarion: boy she can't stand his ass....she feels sorry for him and everything like it sucks obviously. He had a shitty life. But she honestly sometimes is like "king just because you have been miserable you don't need to make everyone else miserable too. whats with you". The feeling is otherwise mutual I imagine because he also is like "this bitch has the audacity to tell me how to act after 200 years of Torture when she's in a contract with a fucking DEVIL.." which he is right for also. but they can be friendly sometimes. She lets him drink from her and such because she dgaf that much. frenemies. Would hit it if he acted straightforward for once though

Shadowheart: Salice would think she's okay and feels sorry for her that she's devoted to the point of mindlessly accepting her own suffering as part of her devotion. She doesnt care that shadowheart is a follower of Shar, she just thinks she needs to reevaluate at what point her religion should override her own comfort. Another case of damn that sucks on salice's part and Shadowheart also thinks Salice is fine herself, evenif she thinks it's weird that after opening up to her about her own struggle Salice has basically like. Said almost nothing about herself to her. Is considering holding her at knifepoint just to know ANYTHING (this is because salice is paranoid about sharing anything abt herself). But little does she know all she needs is a little alcohol and salice will be babbling in no time

Lae'zel: I think she and Lae'zel are on good terms because of a few things: Salice is cutthroat and can also fight well and LOVES to fight, honestly. they definitely banged once (and fought for dominance while doing it) but salice was like that was awesome but i think im good for a while (clueless about things to come) (Faerun's most sexually repressed woman [in the sense she likes showing off but can't take back what she dishes out]). Salice is just like, nice to Lae'zel because she's like what am i gonna do? Act like a bitch to her when she's helpful and surprisingly refreshing to be around ? Absolutely not. They're good friends who spar sometimes

Karlach: Salice likes Karlach because she thinks she's so Genuine and its so Rare to see . And as a result salice feels a little inadequate to being her friend but, considering everything and their shared passion for fighting, she does what she can to help her out. Even if it ain't the easiest task sometimes. I gotta think about this specific dynamic some more, but in general, they're on friendly terms. But Karlach wishes that salice was a little nicer and less of a cunt at times (not directly at her but at the others & people in general)
