DRAMA REVIEW | Queen of Tears (2024)
Tumblr media
Queen of Tears strongest point are the performances, directing and cinematography, there's no doubt about this. Scriptwriter Park Ji Eun has a talent for teaming up with great talents, particular actors, and that's in my opinion the main reason why her drama are usually so successful. She manages to write really interesting and endearing characters, and put them in entertaining situations that grasp the attention of the viewer.
The casting director did a particular excellent job on this one because every single character was cast to perfection, every actor and actress fitting into the role as if it was written for them.
I am fascinated by the way scriptwriter Park Ji Eun has managed to mix genres in one drama, because Queen of Tears is a dark comedy, makjang, comedy, romance and melodrama all in one. This screenwriter is not stranger to making a successful and entertaining kdrama, but if you are looking for something that will dwell into the deeper reasons as to why the leads' marriage crumble, logic and cohesive editing, this story might not be for you.
Queen of Tears strongest point is the way both families come together, learning to respect and love each other but apart from that the drama is developed at a surface level. The scripts lean hard on the other genres which is perfectly fine but there were times when I was frustrated at the desiciones being made, the complete waste of time when the families are running against the clock to save one of their own AND the family's business, etc. This is when I think Queen of Tears is a lot like other Park Si Eun's kdramas: they start strong but run out of material towards the second half of the episode, almost as if she introduce a bunch of plotlines with proper solutions to a few of them.
Overall, I found Queen of Tears to be a really entertaining watch to disconnect from reality.

Never Twice. 8.5
Story: 8
Acting: 10
Chemistry: 10
Comparable to: Beautiful Love, Wonderful Life, (kdrama) ;Homemade Love Story (kdrama)
It’s a family story drama with 72 episodes (32min long). Is it worthwhile watching. Absolutely. It’s hella melodramatic though, so keep that in mind going in. You have a corrupt family, a somewhat vengeful widow, a suicidal couple, a golfer, two adults nearing their 50s who act like they’re in their 20s and a cute older couple. It can get a bit bonkers at times especially towards the later half, the ending had me rolling my eyes on how everyone ended up in one big happy family. And I mean EVERYONE. It’s still a really nice drama even with its ups and downs especially with the main leads who had a beautiful storyline that was written brilliantly for them. I mean the chemistry between the two. *chefs kiss*

Daily Dose of Sunshine
Tumblr media
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2023
Daily Dose of Sunshine (2023, South Korea)
Directors: Lee Jae Kyu & Kim Nam Su
Writers: Lee Nam Gyu, Oh Bo Hyun & Kim Da Hee (based on the webtoon by Lee Ra Ha)
Mini-review:
When I heard this drama was coming out, I got a bit worried, since k-dramas don't have the best track record when it comes to handling this topic. Thankfully, this show's team mostly pulled it off. Sure, it falls into stereotypes from time to time, but its focus is always on empathy, acceptance and tolerance. It really tries to make the viewer understand how hard and undeservedly misunderstood mental illnesses are. For better or worse, that also means the drama doesn't shy away from showing the darkest parts of these illnesses, so please be very careful if this topic is triggering for you, cause there are a lot of hard-to-watch scenes. In terms of acting, the entire cast is great, especially the actors playing the patients, and Park Bo Young. In fact, this might arguably be her career's crowning achievement. The one thing I didn't really like were the romantic parts. I just didn't care for any of the romances, and the show would've been better off without them. Anyway, Daily Dose of Sunshine surprised me by handling a complex topic in a much more humane and hopeful way that I expected.

Korean GLs I'd Watch...
Let's try to manifest a world where some of the biggest Korean actresses were cast in major full-length GL kdramas.
Tumblr media
COP + CRIMINAL
Esom (Because This Is My First Life) and Lee Da-hee (Search: WWW) play partners and besties, who both fall for their respective suspects for a crime spree against the patriarchy. (Think: Evening the pay gap at a major company; exposing scandals of sexist politicians; and chemically castrating sex offenders). Esom's love interest is Park Eun-bin (Extraordinary Attorney Woo), and Da-hee's love interest is Seo Yea-ji (It's Okay to Not Be Okay). It's a romantic crime thriller.
Tumblr media
FRIENDS to LOVERS
Seol In-ah (Business Proposal) plays a new-money rich girl who hires a former old-money rich girl, played by Yoo In-na (Touch Your Heart), to be her personal assistant out of pity, but pretends she doesn't know her backstory. And Yoo helps Seol navigate rich society. Their conflict is that Seol's family bankrupted Yoo's family, and is getting the life Yoo was supposed to have, including the fiancee, the job, and the house. It's a sweet romantic comedy.
Tumblr media
BOSS + EMPLOYEE
Kim Ji-won (Fight My Way) starts a job at a family law firm and works hard to get one of the partners, played by Son Ye-jin (Crash Landing on You), to be her mentor, but only because she wants her job. She starts off as a frenemie before Ye-Jin's hard edges rub off, and Ji-won develops a crush. Their obstacles are that Ye-Jin is married and in the closet, and Ji-won might be too ambitious to let go of her goals. It's a slow-burn romantic legal drama.
Tumblr media
COOL GIRL + DORK
Park Shin-hye (Heirs & Pinocchio) plays a cold fashion house designer who hires an unlikely candidate to be her muse, played by Moon Ga-young (True Beauty). And what starts off as a toxic relationship blooms into a supportive one. Park Bo-young (Strong Girl Bong-soon) plays her head of design, who befriends Ga-young's bestie-turned-manager, played by Kim Seul-gi (Oh My Ghostess). They're the softer side couple. It's a romantic workplace dramedy.
Tumblr media
FRIENDS to ENEMIES to LOVERS
Seo Hyun-jin (Why Her?) and Gong Hyo-jin (When the Camellia Blooms) were friends in college, but they had a falling out after a misunderstanding about a guy. They have a tense reunion as adults when Hyo-jin is setting up her nuptials at the wedding hall Hyun-jin manages. It's a slowburn romantic drama.
Tumblr media
ONE-SIDED OBSESSION
Shin Min-a (Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha) plays the wife of a very powerful and abusive man and Hwang Jung-eum (She Was Pretty) plays the maid who is secretly in love with her and helps her escape. They go to Jung-eum's hometown where everyone assumes she's bringing her girlfriend home for the first time, because she didn't have the heart to tell them she got dumped after running away to be with her. Min-a decides to pretend to be the woman to pay her back, and they fall in love. The conflict being when Jung-eum's ex, played by Park Min-young (What's Wrong with Secretary Kim), returns to get her back.
💜 Your move Kdrama world! 💜

Queen of Tears
Tumblr media
This series is not perfect, but it is still good. It has a solid storyline, and great characters. Hong Hae In and Baek Hyun Woo have been married for 3 years and the love that had united them at the beginning seems to have disappeared in their distance and silence after a miscarriage that broke their hearts. When Baek Hyun Woo finally has the courage to present the divorce papers to Hong Hae In, she tells him she has a tumor and doesn't have much time left. His decision to stay with her gives them an unexpected chance at finding that love that had united them once. Family interactions between their very different families questions dynamics and help characters grow.
I like the fact that they didn't take the easy way out with our main antagonist. The story in itself is really good and I loved it, however, production was a bit careless with details that were too big to miss: Hae In's operation - how can a person with a brain tumor have a surgery with her hair intact. Or Hyun Woo's neck injury suddenly disappearing in a second, ext. These kind of details show some careless oversight. But we can forgive them - we laugh it off and keep watching to see what happens next.
I liked it and recommend it.

Ancestors of K-beauty - 8090s edition
The 5 beauty trend queens :
- of the 80s :
Oh Hyun-kyung - the fact that shes the most prolific Miss Korea winner - 1989 - says it all. Plus that lip commercial? Iconic. The MiKos were the beauty trendsetters of the 80s and the industry literally set the "Jin" as the standard of make up the next few years.
Hwang Shin-hye - homegirl ain't called Computer Beauty for nothing! The only person who actually embodied both the 80s and 90s at the same time. She had naturally arched eyebrows and those heart shaped lips that later became a thing.
Lee Ji-yeon - the originator of the innocent concept and image in the pop music industry, which is the entire k-beauty aesthetic now. Give her the credit. See through bangs, no makeup makeup, thick straight eyebrows, skincare, thin lips.
Kim Wan-sun - when people talk about a 80s diva, they mean her.
Jang Yoon-jeong - Miss Universe contestant in 1988 and a big part of the 80s look - plump lips and cheeks, an obnoxious curl in the forehead, big hair, red lipstick, purple eyeshadow...
Honourable mentions : Lee Mi-yeon for being the absolute innocent cutiepieeee
1990s :
Lee Young-ae : Her 1992 Mamonde Lip commercial literally turned the beauty world upside down. She was the embodiment of the strong, city, career woman that was the image women wanted to be , in those few seconds. Dark red lipstick, short shoulder length hair, pant suit, iconic. Literally influenced the industry for the next 7 years or so.
Kim Hye-soo : She embodied the "career woman" image since the beginning and always had a more mature persona, and especially her dark and matte eye looks as well as her super arched eyebrows were to die for.
Kim Hee-sun : Trendy hairstyle queen - she got the strand highlights, the low ponytail, the hairband and so many other big trends out there. Plus her lips were always dark and we love it.
Ha Soo-bin : the k-manhwa aesthetic in one human, was super popular despite the strong career unnie image being prevalent. It was her shocking popularity that the above trend faded and more natural, innocent makeup following Soobin's appearance became the aesthetic.
Lee Seung-yeon : Miss Korea second runner up, had a pretty illustrious career plus super iconic Smokey eye look. Alao popularised perma curls and headbands after her role in "Cinderella"

The Veil. 9/10
Story: 10
Acting: 10🔥
Chemistry: 10
Comparable to: The K2 (kdrama) Healer (kdrama) ; Vagabond (kdrama)
There is one thing I’ve noticed with Namgoong Min. Usually every freaking drama he’s in is golden and that’s usually because of his acting and the choices of dramas he decides to be in. This one here is golden, probably my top favorite so far he’s been in and trust me it’s so hard to choose since there’s so many. Nonetheless this is an outstanding action thriller spy drama that kept me captivated throughout. With nicely placed twists, spot on writing, the writers were brilliant, just everything was perfect if your a fan of this genre.
