It's nearing the end of the year. It's so easy to forget vids you've enjoyed without a reliable place not only to reference but also share them with others. This can be what you want it to be. The groundwork has been done and it's still a work in progress but a lot closer to the ideal than most. All that's missing is a whole bunch of people willing the rec things and the site. Yeah, go ahead and rec the site. 😀

THANK U so much!!!!! to be honest my process is super hectic and messy, and i never really have a clear goal in mind other than the main focus of a piece (im really bad at visualizing things <\3) also i use procreate, so the speedpaint videos don't show my process of color picking and layer editing

buuuut if ur still curious heres my vid for my Ace piece, sense u didnt clarify (i used my sabo piece as reference for proportion and cohesiveness) content warning for flashing screen / lights

as you can see, i mess around a lot with my shadows and tones, and never stick to a certain color. Art is about experimenting around after all :) but to a little more in depth for my process, im a MAJOR warm tones user, and use softer colors for flats, while i usually pick cool tones such as green and purple (and blues, in this case) for shadows. Also i never really use actual pure white, always opting for light yellows or green/blues. It just makes it pop a little more imo for lineart, sometimes i stick with black, but other times i will go for a deep blue hue, if i feel like it brings out the flat colors more. Another big thing is i LOVE messing with layer modes, which alter my colors a lot. Some of my biggest uses being luminosity, color burn, and any light modes

Anyways im not an expert artists or anything and im still learning and experimenting as much as the next person, so im not all that organized and clear with my process so i apologize, but if ur still interested i could try making a clearer process tut in the future !

would you ever go more into the process of how you made your music videos? like... i saw your "what i use to animate" in the faqs, but i'm insanely interested in any behind the scenes commentary you might have on the whole production of that. do you have anything you care to share about it all? like if there were certain programs you had to learn for them, or certain programs you COULDN'T use for them? i'd love to hear it all!

I didn't learn any programs specifically for Mixed Messages. That one started out as a funny little project for my own entertainment - that's why the line quality was so sketch and shitty, especially in the original half that I posted by itself. Had I known it'll be an official vid, I would have definitely tried to keep it cleaner from the get-go! I started Red Flags with the intent of drawing every character in vector so that if I decide to animate anything else (or have time) I can do it without destroying quality.

I did have to learn to use ToonBoom Harmony for RF, and I wanted to for years so YAY! Obviously I'm no pro and I'm sure there were better ways of doing certain things but at least I have a grip on it now. I also used it a little for the dancing animation in MM, you can probably tell by the difference in line quality. I learned some Blender from @cameronaugust last year, but most of the 3D assets for RF were made by him. It's really useful to know at least basic hard surface modeling though!! Beside that, I almost always have to look up tutorials or plugins for certain effects I want to produce in AE. Particles, simulations, scripted stuff, etc.

Oh and I didn't make storyboards because TIME, I just put all my shitty storyboard doodles in an animatic from scratch. They look like trash and I changed at least 3 scenes entirely to save production time or make it more interesting.

May I ask about your KugSea thoughts? I'm starting to get interested in the pairing and want to talk about them..

The post about Peter running away from Kug (we should find a human name for him...) after Kug tried to kiss him was the blueprint for me. Now, I'm imagining Kug and Peter trying to figure out romantic gestures.. except it's more silly than it is "cute" because they're both merely creatures.

I usually use the name Fritz for Kugelmugel. It's my special brand of sad irony. He looks like dollar store Prussia and shares the name of one of Prussia's most fondly-remembered humans. Funny to me, lol.

In all honesty, I'm not sure what first made me first start shipping them. They kinda just popped up one day. In the past I've shipped MolSea, IceSea, SeaChelles, HongSea, AeriSea, toxic yaoi AmeSea in that one 2P AU... but ngl, none of them have hit me like these two.

For one, they're both founded on pretty similar principles: the preservation of art. Kugelmugel is literally art, and Sealand was founded by radio pirates fighting British censorship. I imagine they both like pushing boundaries and seeing just how far they can take things.

How far is too far? Who will stop them? Who can stop them?

For reference, I write Peter as being instinctively obedient. He was born into the military. He was bred to serve and taught to obey. But "Sealand" was a radical change, and the premise went against everything he had learned prior. Now, he tries to take up a leadership role. He's one of the better-known micros and wants to create something substantial, and for the most part, he loves it. He loves being a little bastard. But that gets exhausting. It's against his basal nature.

Kugel, on the other hand? His energy stems from disobeying. Experimentation and radical ideas fuel his creative process, and that's what keeps him going. He makes his own rules and enforces them, just like Austria. Peter let's him take the lead sometimes, and it's a relief.

For Fritz, he admires Peter so, so much. I imagine that given Austria's more classical art tastes, he'd have a lot of exposure to religious imagery and tends to subconsciously superimpose that onto a lot of things (autism). Peter is older than him, more powerful, and more well known. They're both prone to obsession, and Fritz's adoration borders on worship. Peter's his muse, his living art piece. He's an angel/Madonna/Christ figure/etc to Fritz. There's almost an air of idolatry/objectification, though it's accidental.

Peter matches him obsession-wise. He latches onto anyone who gives him affection or attention, and Fritz sure does that. Unfortunately, he takes after England in that he gets protective and possessive of him. I compare him to a dog a lot because it's true. Peter will resource guard Fritz out of fear of him leaving or being taken away.

How healthy they are for each other is debatable. But they DO make some crazy shit lmao.

Fritz gives art expertise while Peter handles engineering and building. They're rambunctious and unpredictable. I like to think they try to recreate all those weird "internet iceburg" vids like Soup. Avi. No real reason except they can and they want to freak some people out.

Also, I'm pretty sure Austria would not like Peter lmao.

Vorkosigan Saga Readalikes

I was going to wait to write this until I had three options, but I haven't yet thought of a third series that really gives me those Vorkosigan Vibes, and I don't want to sit on these any longer. Both the Earth Girl series and the Merchant Princes series remind me of the Vorkosigan Saga in various ways.

It's some combo of similar themes, characters, setting, multiple installments, and compulsive readability. Like with the Vorkosigan saga, I eventually lost the ability to wait for friends/the library to deliver the sequels to me, and I ended up buying later installments/the whole series on my ereader so I could have them on-demand.

Vorkosigan Saga…but YA The Earth Girl series by Janet Edwards

2788. Only the handicapped live on Earth. Eighteen-year-old Jarra is among the one in a thousand people born with an immune system that cannot survive on other planets. Sent to Earth at birth to save her life, she has been abandoned by her parents. She can’t travel to other worlds, but she can watch their vids, and she knows all the jokes they make.

Jarra is a historian-in-training with a lot of experience excavating ruins on Earth, who joins a class of newbie offworld students under false pretenses, basically to show them up and get proxy revenge on the galactic society that's made her a second-class citizen. Then the false military background she concocts for herself- and the relationships she makes with her classmates- turn out to be more real than she ever intended.

Like Miles, Jarra is desperate to prove herself and does all sorts of stupidly heroic nonsense. Her disability is maybe even more of a cultural construct than Miles's is, while still having enormous influence on her psyche, childhood and career goals. The military in this series, which Jarra hero-worships, is (now) strictly a space exploration/terraforming force.

Hilariously, this series also has a Beta (sector) with a cultural tradition of looser sexual mores/trio marriages. There's also a sort of 'second career' arc for Jarra that's very satisfying, after you get lots and lots of fun and suspenseful archeological excavations (I'm not being sarcastic, they're fascinating!) The secondary cast is also really interesting, and there are installments in the series that explore their backstories and post-Jarra paths.

I read this as an adult (it was a tumblr rec!) and thoroughly enjoyed it, so I would absolutely recommend it to adult Vorkosigan Saga fans. It is firmly in the YA bucket in terms of being a coming-of-age story, so you could also gift it to somebody who might be too young for the Vorkosigan Saga and its' bucket-o-content-warnings, but who you otherwise think would love Miles. (This is not really a Vorkosigan similarity, but I also want to give the series a shoutout for realistic-seeming teen slang, which is harder to do well than you'd think.)

Vorkosigan Saga…with extra Cordelia please The Merchant Princes series by Charles Stross

By the time we meet them at the dawn of the 21st century the Clan of five families who by careful arrangement can produce offspring who world-walk [to parallel universes] have become, in their home world, richer than Croesus. But all this wealth comes at a cost, and envious eyes are watching them just as a business journalist in Boston loses her job and discovers a family heirloom that topples her straight into a cliché that can only end badly in real life: the orphan who discovers she’s the long lost daughter of a noble house, and the subject of all their expectations.

Miriam Beckstein reminds me of Cordelia- a high-tech, driven woman who suddenly finds herself enmeshed with a group of literally feudal relations and embroiled in their political/personal schemes. Like Cordelia, she also sets out on a modernization process for her adopted culture(s), although she has less oblique strategies at her disposal than Cordelia does.

There is also a thematic focus on genetics in this series, and some of the power dynamics connected to that are explored in even greater detail than in the Vorkosigan Saga. The world-walkers have a complex arrangement of arranged marriages to keep the genetic ability to teleport to other timelines, and so like on Barrayar (and Cetaganda), the grandmothers who arrange these marriages are the ones really running the genetic show. (There's also a similar plot thread of 'culturally traumatic nuclear bombings'.)

My favorite part of this series is the latter half, when Miriam meets a political dissident in yet another alternate timeline and works with him to transform his world, and hers in the bargain. If you wanted to see Cordelia winning on a faster timeline, you'll love Miriam and her 30-year plan. There's also a sequel series that explores another member of the family, which has a lot of spy thriller elements and a lesbian romance. (Not going to say too much there, because spoilers.)

My spouse says this series is too 'of its time' for him to really enjoy it, by which he means that the ultimate villain is Evil Mastermind Dick Cheney. This doesn't bother me, but I mention this in case you, too, think Evil Mastermind Dick Cheney is a somewhat dated plot element from the vantage point of 2023. It's definitely more of a Cordelia-and-Aral readalike than a Miles readalike, although the sequel series has some superficial similarities to the introduction of Mark, now that I think about it!

I hope this gives you some new books to check out, all 10 of you Vorkosigan fans that might see this.

i'll add more rambles under the cut, but here's a tldr vid featuring julia:

okay so caleb is not the worst. he just pisses me off in regard to his relationship with priya. and he's kinda sorta boring within the priyaleb plot, which is... most of his plot unfortunately. (like what do you mean chris mclean called you basic... caleb fight back?!?!?!)

one of my fav moments from him is during the finale where he's like "if i win the million, im gonna donate to a million charities!" and then he makes this face after processing what he said:

he can be a little silly and a little funny and a little sweet when we actually get to see his character outside of someone else's. he gives to charities! he volunteers! he got early acceptance to MIT and seems to have went through a lot to get to where he currently is, despite the hardships he went through with his parents! i liked those small moments! i wish we had more but alas!

the scene from ep 9 where he denies an alliance with julia and mk was also interesting considering the fact that later on in the season, he makes a sort of pact with julia (but for priya's sake apparently... just for it to actually backfire in ep 12 lol):

like. he is so wishy washy but with a reason for it: his love for priya. do i like his decisions post ep 8 based on said reason? no, especially after he works so hard to gain priya's forgiveness and trust again. do i think he should have actually made an effort to communicate with priya about a game plan instead of making deals behind priya's back with Thee Enemy of the Season for "her sake"? absolutely. but also, this is total drama, and this was, well, the drama.

so. caleb brought the drama! he did! i just didn't care much for it personally, and thus, did not care for him much. but once again, he ain't the worst. (kinda funny how absolutely nobody in this cast other than priya cares for him tho. like. we can make that into a running gag next season if we try hard enough)

What do I need to do? When you sign up, you’ll provide three general ideas of what you like--tropes, vibes, nothing too specific!--for your creator to work from. Once sign ups close, you’ll be assigned someone and you’ll need to create a fanwork for them based off the information they provided. It could be a short fic, a piece of art, a poem, a vid, an interpretive dance, whatever you like! There are no minimum requirements, but as a rough guideline, think of it as something that would brighten your day if you received it.

When do sign-ups open? They’re open now, and will close on November 30, at the end of the day for you, anywhere in the world.  

What if I can’t finish something in time? Please send us an email at jbficexchange@gmail.com to let us know and we’ll do what we can to either let your recipient know you’ll be a little late, or organize someone else to backfill.

Does my fanwork have to be festive themed? Definitely not. You’ll just be sharing it between December 23rd and New Year’s Day.

Will my prompts be private? No, they will be released to everyone on December 23rd to allow for the Stocking Stuffer exchange (details coming later in the month). This will be open for anyone to contribute to, not just the people who participate in the main exchange.

Update - Thoughts about YouTube

Hello!! So I figured alongside posting art and posting new videos, I could also use this blog as .. you know .. a blog.

So here’s a little catch up on where I’ve been at in the past couple of months.

It’s the beginning of March and I’ve already uploaded two videos this year which is near record breaking. Usually nothing is up until April.

Something I’ve been slightly scared about is the fact I’m jumping ship from Pokémon content again. I did something similar back in 2020 and when I look back at the content I made back in ‘20 and ‘21 (and the variety stuff in ‘22!) it makes me wonder why I don’t go back and do that again - but just in a different form.

I do love Pokémon but making my channel totally Pokémon/Fakemon focused has started to feel like a chore. There just isn’t a lot to cover that I’m super interested in, and the videos weren’t super fun to make anymore which I feel was definitely reflected in the final product.

The Halo and Sims videos I’ve recently uploaded were some of the most fun ones to make and so I’m just going to keep at it, see where I can go with the current format.

My next video has just been scripted. Since these latest videos are very much gameplay focused and don’t feature really any animation, I’ve had to shake up my process which has been a fun challenge. Now I’m making a rough cut of the footage and then writing my script around that sequence. I’ll spend tomorrow recording the script and then I’ll work hard on the video so I can have it ready for you next week.

It’s a really fun video, and the game is WILD - like nothing I’ve seen before. Think Total Drama x Animal Crossing.

With this new format I’ll also be able to upload so much more frequently and share a whole lot of interesting games that I’ve been wanting to talk about for years. I hope you’re excited to see what I’ve got cooking, I’m more than excited to share it.

BuffyTube rescued by Open Windows😉

Buffytube was a Vidding Social Network for Buffy Fans that hosted original uploaded content as well as You Tube & Vimeo embeds. All of a sudden it was gone with no notice to members and no time for them to archive their uploaded fanvids and fanart. A big loss to the community. Running an independent fan network along with healthcare (it seems) is hard. This sounds like the traditional frustration of fans about disappearing fan spaces but there is a twist ending.

I ran a similar network called Vidders.net which ran on the same platform and a passionate advocate for archiving. A few months before the site went down, I had an impromptu conversation with the admin of BuffyTube. I offered to help archive the site using archive tools they were not familiar with that actually already existed on the platform. So, I helped them like Juvenile to "back that thang up."

There are 457 BuffyTube vids transferred to Vidders.net using the Open Windows* 😉 project. They are there now - hosted and streaming. If you were a member of BuffyTube and uploaded content that you thought was gone for good join Vidders.net to get access to your vids. What's the process? Simply request to be a friend of the "BuffyTube" profile and once approved you will be able to view all the vids. You'll be able to view all the content that was originally uploaded to BuffyTube. I also have a meta-archive of comments for each video. The archive tools I used were very detailed when it came to what was able to be archived. We also have all fanart originally uploaded as well. I am surprised at what was rescued. I found comic con type pictures of fans with Buffy the Vampire Slayer actors in addition to artwork. That has not been uploaded yet, but I can take requests to email you specific images if required.

Call for Festivids Nominations Volunteers!

Evaluating all of the fandom nominations is the most time-intensive part of running Festivids, and we are so grateful to everyone who helps out! Every volunteer brings their own fannish expertise to the fandom nominations process, which can make evaluating nominations easier, faster, and more accurate.

Nominations volunteers help to determine fandom eligibility and disambiguate fandoms during and just after the nominations period. (Nominations are from September 27 - October 8th, and signups start October 14th.)

Here are some things nominations volunteers do:

Check technical details: is this fandom a safety fandom, is the title correct, is there any ambiguity about what fandom the nominator intended to nominate, is the umbrella tag applied correctly.

Make vid playlists for fandoms to evaluate rarity (searching youtube following the Festivids standards). I legit do this step in boring meetings sometimes because it's so tickyboxy.

Check vids in vid playlists to confirm that they are vids. "Watch" isn't the right word for what we do - we really quickly check to make sure everything on a vid playlist is vid-like, but we don't watch the entirety of every vid on the playlist.

Nomination volunteers don't have to take on huge numbers of fandoms - evaluating just a few you're familiar with is super helpful! We have a step-by-step guide for volunteers with all of the screening steps.

We're especially looking for volunteers who are familiar with kdramas, cdramas, jdramas, Thai dramas, or other Asian dramas. If you're great at quickly identifying things vidded to the OST vs the actual OST, or if you read Korean or Chinese or Japanese or Thai, or if you already know which movies are which in the The Grave Robbers' Chronicles, you could help us evaluate those fandoms much more quickly and more accurately than our current approach, which involves a lot of mydramalist and google translate.

hi its the original cheetz animator anon again and SO SORRY for kicking off drama then dipping for days. however, this is gonna get LONG.

cheetz' entire work model screams offloading shit onto other people so they can produce as much as possible in the shortest amount of time.

Weekend maps (baby's first crunch culture), 200-part maps with 3 collabers on each one (literally 0 problem with collaboration and its very cool [even if its solely because of the insane crunch], but I'll get to why Im bringing it up), and TRAILERS for their maps to generate as much hype as possible for them. What these create is hundreds of videos about The New Cheeteh Z Map, thus boosting cheetz in the algorithm MASSIVELY.

To break it down, each of the 200 map part creators will post a video with the map title in it, pushing the topic out to as many people as possible. the trailer is there for the existing subs, making SURE they watch at the premiere and again putting the "X Cheeteh Z MAP" topic as smth that anyone who vaguely likes maps needs to watch Right Now. Premiere happens, everyone watches, maybe skims the part playlist, and subs to cheetz (or at least flags to yt that theyre interested in their vids). Because this happens every 3 weeks, it's a consistent stream of content running back to them. its the exact same content-farming dr**k did lmfaoo

The same thing happens to hype the animators for The Next Big Project in the server. I think it was hollyfawn that had a 10-day @/everyone spree with like? a scavenger hunt? to tease that the next project was coming, prepare to apply!!11! To add onto it, they literally dont even do the storyboarding themself. They recruit like 5 other people to do it and cheetz'll help out. This is why the visual language is as disjointed as it is, and no hate towards the board artists! Its just that everyone has different styles and cheetz isnt exactly there to unify it aside from some meaningless symbols (does anyone actually know what hawkstorm's wings mean. anyone?)

Now that we've dissected my perspective on cheetz' content creation style, I've done a wee bit of research on my end with the analytics of my vids.

DISCLAIMER: I am a smallish channel with a few hundred subs and I only upload once every couple months. in fact I'm in the process of divorcing myself from wc so its prolly gonna have a massive subdrop as soon as I upload original animations. I am also one person and have not corroborated my findings with any other animators. Part 2 of the disclaimer: Tigernoir was never finished. After the controversy and threats against the host+animators we agreed to call it off and unlist/priv/delete our parts.

The difference in analytics between my TN part and my other unrelated parts that have a fairly large amount of views within the same amount of time is Notable. This is based on the 4-day mark of each part being up (the numbers are accurate because these were recorded then, and not pulled up Now):

The unrelated part got 1.8k views by then, TN got 2.3k. the difference is the interactions though. By the 4-day mark, the unrelated part had 36k impressions, accessed thru the sidebar (a 5% watchrate), and TN had 10k impressions (23%), accessed mainly thru the playlist. TN had 4 comments by then, Unrelated had 12. Unrelated gained me 50 subs, TN gained 10.

Obviously 2 vids from one person can't be Concrete Evidence, so my theory for this is that people are just skimming through the playlist without actually Intending to watch the videos. With the algorithm, even though a smaller percentage clicked the video, the views clearly had their eye caught and chose to check it out. This meant the viewers were actually engaged with the content and chose to see what else the uploader had going. TN's part on the other hand was just kinda There and automatically watched, then likely skipped onto the next part when the process section began.

In all, the focus is not on the animator when it comes to a cheetz map from what I've noticed. It is quite literally All About Cheetz, and he doesnt do anything but PROMOTE that with their content creation style and how he interacted with the people that work for him. Downright disheartening, and this style becoming fairly mainstream + their fans mirroring it is a very large part why im packing my bags from the warriors animation scene. Once again, sorry abt the length! but that anon did drive me mildly berserk and I needed to delve a bit deeper into my stance.

all i can really say is that that sucks man. i'm glad you're trying to pursue something that makes you happy tho! i really hope you gain the traction you desire along your journey! ik all the animators on cheeteh z's maps are like super fantastic so like i can already imagine how good your content will be..

I find your understanding of shape language amazing and I admire your ability to deliver so much with your designs (and over all I think you are Really good at character design)

theres this really good vid on youtube that id personally recommend you check out first, because it really helped me for my character design skills. after watching this vid, you can check out my list of additional tips that helped my character design skills for the better! you dint have to follow all of my tips if you dont want to, they just helped me in my artist journey :)

1.watch what interests you & study it!

sometimes watching shows & studying how they design characters, compose shots, use colors, etc. while watching can really help shape you as an artist! if ur a bit lost on where to start try finding model sheets of the characters from your favorite animated shows to understand the process of how your favs are designed, drawn, & finalized in the show! heres some things ive checked out for the past 3 years & helped influenced how i draw today!

something ive noticed when watching the things im interested in is the kind of art style being used: all of these examples tend to use heavy stylized shape language in their character designs, & most of them use thick black outlines to make the characters contrast from their environment (ofcourse theres a few lineless exceptions like fakin it, mr messy, & fosters for a few examples)

watching what interests you and analyzing the art style & character design can really help improve your character design skills!! it also helps to break down simple shapes in a character’s design to understand how theyre constructed & what makes them appealing.

2. warm up drawing!

another thing that helps is to draw warm ups! these are vital for the process of your finalized designs usually, as they help layout the structure, the pose, the direction for the line of action, etc.! speaking of which, a good helpful resource to start would be lineofaction.com! it has a lot of helpful resources for artists of all skill levels & help optimize your understanding of anatomy! the link to this is posted below:

3. dont immediately go with your first draft. experiment!

instead of going for your first draft of a design, try experimenting & see what works! if you nail the design on the first draft, thats really impressive! for me, some character designs take longer to finalize than others, but the payoff is absolutely worth it! its always helpful to design & redesign a character until you have a design you’re satisfied with.

4. have fun!

ik this is a basic tip but. generally having fun with designing characters & creating them is essential. whether you’re making little mind babies called ocs or reimagining existing characters, make the process engaging and worthwhile! otherwise character design can be just as tedious as working in the coal mines & writing lengthy essays for school/college assignments.

some of my favourite vids

lirazel expressed interest in a rec list of some of my favourite vids and I am very suggestible when it comes to rec lists so here you go! :D Unfortunately a few of the older vids that I remember fondly are no longer available online for me to share with you (the batman vid set to johnny cash's cover of hurt! the highlander vid about methos/lord byron! and more!), but there are still plenty of excellent vids up and about, and new ones worth watching keep being made!

Yes this rec list is 22 vids long, shush, I couldn't cut any of these out. I just got so emotional in the process of making this rec list at how wonderful an artform the fanvid is! It can do so many different things! It can be so powerful in such a brief space of time!

I've ordered the list below alphabetically by fandom. I go through a lot of different fandoms here!

And it was so fun too to work on practicing my skills at describing a vid and explaining what's good about it; I have many years of practice at talking about written narratives, but interpreting and talking about visual media is still a skillset that I'm not instinctively good at and don't have as much experience with. But I think I did pretty good with these vids. I hope you enjoy them!

1. Problem, by talitha78 Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Bucky/Steve Look I may be totally burnt out on the MCU at this point but damn did CA:TWS have some good fanworks. This is a vid that is gleefully and wholeheartedly throwing itself into depicting Bucky through the lens of of this natalia kills song with a straight face. I still sometimes find myself singing "girl is a problem" to myself about things, because of this vid.

2. All In Together, by odessie The Great British Bake-Off, ensemble This vid encapsulates the spirit of the show (…at least, the show when it was a BBC show, before it moved to Channel 4), which is about everybody being weird, dedicated, enthusiastic, imperfect, and all in it together despite it being ostensibly a competition. "Celebrate your oddities, your art, your own insanity." YEAH. It's so cheering!

3. All We Got, by anoel The Great Gatsby, Daisy/Gatsby One of those where I've read the book but not seen the adaptation, but I feel like watching this vid gives me everything I need from seeing an adaptation of the story! Sharply edited use of the beautiful visuals; really creates the necessary feeling of high energy glitz papering over emptiness, which the book honestly doesn't do a good enough job at lol.

4. Show Me Your Teeth, by Dogstar Hieronymous Bosch's artwork, all of Bosch's weird little guys It's strange, a bit surreal, energetic. My immediate reaction when I first saw this vid was "wtf in the best way." I'm so impressed with how the vidder could make such a compelling vid out of static artwork!

5. God's Gonna Cut You Down, by sholio Highlander, Methos & Cassandra & the horsemen There were so many excellent highlander fanvids back in the day but this is one of the ones that has really stuck with me, with its perfect encapsulation of the complexities of the relationships in the "Comes a Horseman" and "Revelations 6:8" pair of episodes, paired with exactly the right song.

6. In Which Sophie Expresses Her Feelings In The Absence Of Weedkiller, by ryfkah Howl's Moving Castle, Howl/Sophie The vidder took on the challenge of using the movie's footage to make a vid about the book's version of the story, and did an incredible job! I adore this vid and how perfectly it captures Sophie and Howl and their relationship.

7. A Tune Like the End of the World, by frith_in_thorns Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, John Childermass Although I haven't seen the tv show, I have read the book it's based on a LOT, so I can more or less figure out which character is who in the visuals from context, lol. I love how good this vid is at getting the atmosphere of the story right; the atmosphere is such an important part of it!

8. Work This Body, by CherryIce Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, ensemble Just really encapsulates the sense of joy and fun that the movie is all about! I don't know what else to say about it, other than that I have rewatched this vid a ridiculous number of times and it keeps being fun. (Unfortunately the streaming version is no longer available, but it's still up for download!)

9. Let's Go (Young Men Dead), by sweetestdrain Lawrence of Arabia, Lawrence The vid that got me to finally watch the movie, and discover how the movie, despite the various critiques it's worthwhile to make of it, is a really brilliant work of art. And the vid, too, is a brilliant work of art! SO many feelings. It's got the vibes just right, of this enormous, larger-than-life story and the relentless grinding-down of everyone involved, the inevitable despairing end to everything. The way it uses juxtaposition and empty spaces! I get emotional rewatching the vid even now, 8 years after watching the movie.

10. Parachute, by thingswithwings Leverage, Eliot/Hardison/Parker I may not have ever seen the show but I've read enough fanfic to be fully on board for this ot3, and this vid depicts them in the BEST way, the way they love and trust and like and rely on each other, and the joy they have in each other! And it does a beautiful job of highlighting each of the three sides of the triangle as well as the three of them all together, too.

11. Under Pressure, by violace The Martian, ensemble It's a vid about the way so many people come together to save Mark Watney: working together, hoping together, caring together, celebrating together. Still able to touch my cynical little heart in these days of looking at the world around me in despair. Humans WANT to help each other!

12. Landsailor, by raven multifandom, ensembles The vidder describes this vid as an "ode to infrastructure" and that's like. what it is! It's about people coming together to do the hard work of building something bigger than any one of them, and it's so joyful and inspiring, tbh! I am familiar with very few of the fandoms it includes but you don't need to know them to get the gist, to follow the story being told.

13. Oh No!!! by findmeinthealps Nirvana in Fire, Prince Yu Prince Yu has a very bad time in Nirvana in Fire and I love to see it, beautifully framed from his point of view in this vid. Yes I grinned all the way through it. Sorry Prince Yu!! (not sorry.)

14. At Last, by eruthros Salt Fat Acid Heat, Samin Nosrat/food The canon is a delightful 4-episode cooking show. This vid of it is set to the most schmaltzy of old-school love songs, and it is about how much JOY both good food and good friends bring, featuring many loving shots of food plus Samin Nosrat's expressive face, and I just melt into feelings.

15. Soccer Practice, by bironic Stargate: SGA, John/Ronon A silly, delightful vid about sexual innuendo between two bros. Serious and emotional fanvids are so good but sometimes it's great to just lol.

16. Tik Tok, by MissSheenie Star Trek: TOS, ensemble It's a classic for a reason. How could I not include it? As I recall, even Kesha agrees that this vid understands her song.

17. dirty work, by voordeel-ts Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi This vidder is one of the only ones I've seen who can include pieces of the original audio into a vid in a way that actually works for me, the audio incorporated into the music in rhythm so that it all feels of one piece. Their vids are always fast and stylish, and this one is no exception, as it takes a look at Obi-Wan and his use of violence.

18. Start a War, by ifshehadwings (sophie_448) The Untamed, Nie Huaisang and Jin Guangyao Nie Huaisang and Jin Guangyao do a lot of their worst stuff behind the scenes, out of the view of the camera, and this vid does an amazing job of bringing that forward and making it legible, focusing on the horrible things each of them do in the name of fulfilling their goals. This is also an excellent example of a vid that uses a slow song and relatively slow cuts and yet never loses its intensity and forward momentum. Hats off!

19. a love that won't sit still, by Aria The Untamed, Lan Wangji/Wei Wuxian Just the perfect vid of wangxian from Lan Wangji's perspective? holy shit. What DO you do with a love that won't sit still or do what it's told?! And I love the way it incorporates the pain and difficulties of Wei Wuxian's death and the years without him, leading into that last quieter gentler repeat of the chorus that slowly builds back up again.

20. Lose My Breath, by deirdre_c White Nights, Kolya/Ray Sooooo I've never actually seen White Nights BUT. This vid is such a beautiful encapsulation of a relationship between two men being told through the medium of dance. And the way all the dancing and other physicality in the video is made to feel like it belongs with the vid's song is just so seamless! The way the whole thing just feels so grounded in their bodies and the way that the two of them play off each other! I could watch it forever.

21. Such A Loser, by sandalwoodbox Yuri!!! On Ice, ensemble The show made me care so much about all the skaters, and want all of them to win, which of course is impossible. But this vid uses a joke song from a parody music duo to somehow perfectly encapsulate the way that all the characters' striving is worth celebrating, whether they win or not. Super heartwarming!

22. Never Look Away, by helcinda Yuri on Ice, Viktor/Yuuri Wow, the experience of watching this ship vid is just me making a heart-eyes face at my computer screen the whole time. Highly recommend the experience!
