The Hollow Knight Spotlight
Tumblr media
I am seeing a lot of platformer games that mimic the visual style and atmosphere of Hollow Knight. And honestly, go for it, I am not here to criticize that choice.
But I think a detail that imitators miss is the way the character spotlight functions in Hollow Knight / Silksong.
Tumblr media
On a basic level, platformer games rely on some level of contrast between the foreground, ie: platforms you can jump on / interact with, and the background, ie: things you cannot interact with.
But what ends up happening is the background can feel too disconnected from the foreground, which might hurt a feeling of immersion. The background might be a feature of telling the story or setting the atmosphere, but its not necessarily providing useful information beyond that.
Tumblr media
When games try to integrate the background and foreground, it can sometimes be hard to tell what you can and can’t interact with. It might be harder to make difficult jumps, or easier to fall off platforms or get lost in the space.
Compare the original Cave Story screenshot with the Cave Story 3d screenshot. I am not trying to judge either of these games, but the 3d version sacrifices clarity for atmosphere and immersion.
Tumblr media
I think Hollow Knight / Silksong gets the best of both worlds because of the spotlight. Within the spotlight, the foreground is clearly delineated from the background. And outside the spotlight, the foreground is more integrated into the background.
This also creates a hierarchy of information. Our eyes pay more attention to areas of higher contrast, and less attention to areas of low contrast. The spotlight creates more contrast, and platforms within the spotlight require more attention.
And the background itself suggests the information we need to know about the space. In the above screenshot, we know the lower right area is more open, and there is a wall on the left and a ceiling at the top. But we can see the passage to the left that Hornet can go through. And the background suggests there is a hole in the ceiling above Hornet that she can climb up or fall down, even if those elements are off screen.
Tumblr media
In this background we can see the floor is collapsing, suggesting a hole we can go through.
Tumblr media
And as the player gets closer to it, its much easier to see what is solid ground and what the player would pass through.
I think this really mimics how our actual vision works. We can see things farther away from us that might be interesting, but we have to get up close to them to see the details.
It is a way the designers hide secret rooms, create a sense of exploration, and also make spaces tense or mysterious.
yeah sorry, maybe this is nothing revelatory. I’ve just seen several indie games trying to mimic the Hollow Knight spotlight, but I feel like they miss its actual function. Its not just making stuff darker. I think its cooler than people might first realize.

Oh yeah. We're going old school with this
So Metroid 1 is a game that one can't help have some respect for: naturally without it there would be no series, hell there would be no genre! Super Metroid? Sotn? Hollow Knight? A good chunk of Indie games? Never would it have existed without this game! I can't deny its influence
....but Jesus Christ is it ROUGH
And look I've played plenty of NES games of this era, many of them being Metroid's contemporaries: Super Mario Bros, Zelda 1, Castlevania 1, Mega Man 1... and while all of them have their rough patches as was the norm for pretty much all videogames at the time....Metroid 1 stands out in a pretty bad way...
It's not stuff like the slow down whenever there are too many sprites on screen, that couldn't be helped I'm sure and was pretty common.
Nor is it the lack of a map in and of itself or the game's cryptic nature. In fact I'd say that this game is at least not as cryptic as the likes of Castlevania 2 since most of the time you can find your way forward by simply bombing a floor or wall whenever you run into a dead end, so once you know that you should be (kinda) good
My issue is how much it's obvious that this game was rushed to absolute fuck.
I can't find the interview that stated this but I heard that most of this game's development was handled during its very last months, which you can tell just by looking because about 85% of this game is made up of the same 5-6 room layouts copy and pasted with only slight differences if any at all, which is the REAL culprit for why you'll get lost here
Then there's the enemy placement
How can I put this gently?
Uhmmmm...
It's absolute dog shit
Enemies are spammed without rhyme or reason, they attack you non stop, whenever you find those pipes straight out of Super Mario bros they'll be spewing enemies literally without stopping: here's a hint when you kill an enemy and they drop an item until you pick up that item the enemy won't respawn. Trust me this can be useful
Sometimes enemies won't spawn correctly when you enter a room, sometimes they'll attack you as soon as you enter while you're still going through the door transition when you can't move Samus, hell sometimes they'll manage to enter the door with you and hit you continuously WHILE the transition plays out!
If you die in this game you'll get respawned at the start of the area you died in...with only 30 points of health, meaning that you'll have to spend a lot of time grinding enemies for health, which was an issue that was also present in Zelda 1 but at least there the health bar was much smaller overall
I know it's an old game but...Zelda 1 didn't have this much copy and pasted level design, in fact that game's overworld was pretty diverse making it possible to orient yourself even without a map after a while. the dungeons where certainly much guiltier of copying room layouts but you could find a map and a compass in those places at the very least
With all due respect I think people sometimes give Metroid 1 a little bit too much leeway. Yeah some of its issues couldn't be helped as they were standard for the time....but others not so much I believe
Speaking of, I may have said that you can absolutely find your way forward even without a guide by just keeping in mind to bomb every potential dead end...but you ain't never finding the Varia Suit and Screw Attack without a guide. You have to destroy some completely inconspiquous blocks on perfectly normal looking ceilings in perfectly normal looking rooms.
Granted you don't NEED those two power ups to finish the game....but unless you're already a grade A expert at this game you're gonna need them if you plan on beating the more bullshit parts, especially the Varia Suit for the extra defense

The fandom misinterprets the Pale King, a lot....
Hollow Knight, one of the best indie games ever made and my personal favourite. In fact, it's my most favourite game overall as of now. Maybe SS might change that. But anyway, it is about us saving a kingdom from a plague, yada yada yada. I am not here to talk about that. I am here to talk about one of the central figures of the game, the Pale King.
The Pale King (PK for short, as I'll call him from now) is one of the strongest characters in the game, definitely in the top 3. Makes sense, as he is a higher being. And, as the name would suggest; he is, or rather was, the ruler of Hallownest. He is character whose past actions affect the present of the game. But not in a negative way, not at all. The negative effect is caused by the antagonist of the game, the Radiance. PK is also the father of the Vessels, one of whom we play as, The Knight. Anyway, so PK came to the kingdom in his Wyrm form. He died in that form, and from inside an egg emerged his next and current form. Because of the King's Mark, he was accepted as the King by the bugs. PK created a huge beacon around himself, which stayed even after his death, which granted intelligence to the bugs in the kingdom. He saw the bugs being infected by the Radiance, and that is when he created the Vessels, to stop her and save the kingdom.
Now, with the brief history out of the way, let us talk about the main thing, PK getting misinterpreted. Many people misinterpret the information we have been given about him, and then proceed to dislike him. So allow me to clear some stuff up.
First things first, PK was a bad parent, I agree. But he was not as bad as the fandom makes him out to be. The fandom makes him out to be this father who does not care at all about his children and only likes saw blades (which I will address in the next para). That is not at all the case. PK felt very sad and ashamed for the children he had sacrificed for them to get converted to Vessels. We know this because of White Lady's statement. But he did what he did because he wanted safety in numbers, hoping that at least one Vessel would climb up the Abyss. He wanted to save his kingdom and placed that over the life of his children, though yes, it may have not have been necessary to sacrifice that many. And about the Hollow Knight, the Vessel that reached the top first, PK cared for it a lot. PK had formed a bond with it, but it is unclear if the Hollow Knight had formed a bond with him. And he was also sad because of what it would be going through after having the Radiance inside it. He really deeply cared for and loved the Hollow Knight. But for the kingdom, he sacrificed it. It's the "sacrifice something of your own for the greater good" type thing.
Secondly, some people hate PK because of the saw blades. They think they were in the White Palace ever since it was made. That is not true. The White Palace did not have the saw blades originally. When PK moved the Palace to the Dream Realm after the Hollow Knight not being able to contain the Infection, he added the saw blades then because of paranoia. We can even say that the saws are made of essence, since they were made and added to the Palace in the Dream Realm. He moved the Palace in the Dream Realm because he was scared. And he added the saws for that same reason. He did not want anyone to enter the Palace. And considering everything that happened, I would not blame him.
Third, a few people think that PK cheated on White Lady with Herrah. PK did not cheat on White Lady. Yes, he did have a child with Herrah, but it was not because he actually felt love towards her. He did that because of a deal. Herrah would become a Dreamer to protect the Black Egg only if PK would have a child with her. She was a common bug, and she wanted her child to be of higher position. Well, Hornet was half-wyrm, so that was a success. But anyway, White Lady allowed it, since she had wanted to save the kingdom too. It can't be cheating if his original partner allowed it. He was ready to do anything to save his kingdom, and since Deepenest was slowly getting infected too, it would be a benefit for Herrah too, since she was the queen of Deepnest and her kingdom could be saved too. Though I must say that Herrah ended up in worse off in the bargain since she couldn't even see her child after she was born.
Fourth, and this is the most absurd one, some people hate him just because of his failure and because they think PK doesn't have any emotions. NO!! HE HAD EMOTIONS, THAT WAS A PART OF MY FIRST POINT!! He felt sad and ashamed for the children and the Vessels because of what he did to them. And then when one Vessel did climb up, he took great care of it, he had made a bond with the Hollow Knight. He cared for it. And he was sad for the duty he was about to place on it. But when it turned out that the Hollow Knight was not truly hollow and that the kingdom was doomed, just imagine the sadness he would be feeling. The only thing he wanted to do, was to save his kingdom. But not only did his last ditch effort not work, the child whom he loved and cared was now in eternal torture. He went through a lot of emotional and mental pain, and here are these people thinking he does not have any emotions. That is just dumb. Hell, we can even say that he died because sadness and grief and not Void. If you want some proof, here you go. You know how the Lighthouse managed to pacify a whole Void lake? Yeah, well PK is so bright that it would hurt to look at him. The Lighthouse's light isn't. How could he not pacify just a little amount of Void then? Plus there isn't any evidence of Void on his corpse. And he was also able to directly manipulate and imprint Void without harm. So that leaves a natural cause as the only option of his death. And considering the sadness and grief he went through, it is not far fetched to believe he died because of that sadness and grief.
PK is misinterpreted a lot. He is a wonderfully written character. He does not deserve the hate he gets. I hope this post could clear up some misinformation about him. Maybe the hate will also stop, or at least reduce. And, for the love of god, please stop misinterpreting him and then hating him because of your misinterpretation.

the thing about dark souls is. like. it's hard to articulate but man that game makes me feel like i'm discovering the joy of video games for the first time. i keep getting this feeling like "this game was made for me" and "this is what video games should be" - is that just because hollow knight was such a formative experience for me? or is dark souls really that good/unique? it's certainly rough around the edges: i've played many games i think are "better," but dark souls evokes the feeling of existing in a world in a certain way i don't think i've ever gotten from anything else.
i'm also coming at it from the really weird perspective of someone who could only play 2D games (and games without intensive graphics) for the longest time. so i've had this sort of backwards development where i started out playing exclusively indie games and now i'm discovering that actually, there's a lot of extremely good AAA stuff! it's really exciting to have this whole new world opened up. (though i hope it won't skew my expectations for indies too much lol.) and crazy too... 2 years ago i never would have thought i'd be capable of playing dark souls (because it's hard and i've not been a "gamer" for as long as my peers have, because simulation sickness made all 3D games hard for me for a while, because at times it has this weird dudebro culture around it) ! and yet!!! what the fuck!! screw gatekeeping; this game was made for me!

⭐ Welcome! ⭐
Henlo. Hope you’re doing well. Thanks for poppin’ by. I’m Veins, an art goblin on the internet with abnormal levels of anxiety and chronic video game brainrot, and this is my introduction post. Any updates or news on my end will be added here as well. I hope you’ll be patient with me and enjoy your visit!
(Last updated 04/20/24)
---
Who are you?
What an existentially upsetting question. Well, for the moment, I go by VeinsFullOfStars online, usually shortened to just Veins. I’m also toying around with Ivan or Yves, but Veins is the most preferable. Nice to meet you!
Wait, didn't you already have an account here? With the same username?
I did. I, uh, panic-deleted it in response to the data-scraping fiasco and regretted it almost immediately. As a result, you might see reblogs from the deactivated account still floating around. There is, unfortunately, nothing I can do about those unless the blogs that shared them take them down themselves (and, hey, if you happen to be one of those folks seeing this, I'd super appreciate it if you'd maybe remove the old reblog and replace it with the new one from here if you can). It's my mistake for overreacting, and now I just have to live with it. Sorry for any confusion.
What does your username mean? Where did it come from?
It’s an altered version of a pen name I used in my teen years. I’m too embarrassed to get into specifics, but just know that it comes from a place of very sincere cringe and leave it at that.
What are your preferred pronouns/gender?
Thanks for asking! I’m non-binary, and I use they/them pronouns.
How old are you?
Ancient (in my 30s).
What is your avatar supposed to be?
A goblin. Very smol, very nervous, very puntable.
What are you using this blog for?
Art, mostly. I like to draw digitally and sometimes make stuff with yarn. I've also been writing since I could hold a pencil (though I don’t have much finished, so art will be the main focus for now). Also, expect a lot of reblogs, shitposts, and/or silence between posts - I am a simple hobbyist with a lot of brain nonsense and IRL hurdles. I’ll do my best to post with some regularity, of course, but - again - I hope you’ll be patient with me if things go quiet from time to time.
What are your interests?
I love stories. I love characters. I love folks who can weave whole worlds with nothing but words on a page or color on a canvas. I grew up on fantasy novels, short horror stories, and late ‘90s/early ’00s animation. I learned to appreciate slice-of-life and slow-burn romance much later. Mythology and folklore also slaps, and I wonder sometimes if I should’ve majored in psychology instead of lib arts. My playlists are nothing but video game OSTs with a little heavy metal and j-rock sprinkled in for flavor. I sold my soul to Nintendo years ago, but sometimes I find indie darlings to fall in love with for a time. Dogs are adorable little menaces, and I love them all with my whole chest. Cats are okay, and I am allergic to them. (Does that answer the question? I think I lost track towards the end there…)
Any current hyperfixations?
Tons, but the biggest ones at the moment are Kirby, Hollow Knight, and Paper Mario. More nebulous interests include (in no particular order) Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, Rain World, Stardew Valley, most Soulsborne titles, Hades, Darkest Dungeon, Good Omens, The Legend of Zelda, Undertale/Deltarune, OFF, The Binding of Isaac, Ace Attorney, Animal Crossing, The Magnus Archives, Sonic the Hedgehog, and countless more. When I say “multifandom,” I mean it, homie.
Do you have any other social media?
Just this and an AO3 account. So, if you see my name anywhere but these two places, it’s probably not me. For now, Tumblr will be the best place to keep up-to-date with my stuff. If anything changes, I’ll let y’all know here.
Do you have a list of tags you use on your posts?
I tag things obsessively, but I’ll try to sort out the most relevant/unique ones I use here:
#veins art - for any art I’ve made (chrono link)
#veins old art - for reposts of older art I made before moving to Tumblr (Note: these posts are here for archival purposes and may not reflect my current style/interests.)
#veins sketches - for any of my unrendered doodles/sketch dumps
#veins ocs - for art I’ve made featuring my original characters/stories
#veins fanart - for art I’ve made featuring characters from other IPs
#veins writes - for any written works I’ve made
#veins ships - for any posts (reblogs included) featuring romantic pairings; I will also try to include specific pairings as “#(blank) x (blank)” and/or any ship names
#veins rambles - for random thoughts/text posts
#veins in dream land - for any rambles/headcanons about the Kirby series specifically
#veins answers - for any of my responses to asks sent in (chrono link)
#veins reblogs - for anything I reblog, obviously
#kirbtober 2023 - for my Kirbtober 2023 art specifically (chrono link)
#childhood friends au - for art from my Kirby AU where Dedede and Meta Knight first met as kids (masterpost | chrono link)
#kintsugi au - for art from my Kirby AU centered around the Mirror World, the Wave 2 gang, and the Darkroach ship - warning: contains angst and some suggestive content (masterpost | chrono link)
I’ll update this with new tags if/when they pop up. Anything else will have generic tags to fit the context of the post. I also mark trigger warnings with tags like “#(blank) tw” if necessary.
What do you use to make your art?
For digital art, I use Clip Studio Paint and a Wacom Intuos Pro S drawing tablet (that I'm pretty sure I've had since high school). I don’t draw traditionally as much anymore, but, when I do, it’s usually just quick sketches with pencil and paper. For writing, I use TextEdit or whatever generic rich text editing software I can find. For crafting, I use yarn and plastic canvas.
What brushes do you use?
For sketching and linework, I generally use the Wick Pencil from the 8 Particle Pencil catalog made by saturns_day. For flats and rendering, I use the default CSP hard round brush, airbrush, and G-pen. For effects and extras (clouds, textures, sparkles, etc.), I use default effects brushes or whatever I can find from the CSP Asset Shop.
Can I share your work through reblogs? And are tags okay?
Of course! Reblogs are absolutely fine and always encouraged. I’m also fine with tags as well (though I ask that you not mark anything as a ship unless I’ve marked it as such on the original post - look for the tag #veins ships if you’re ever unsure).
Can I repost/use your work for my own personal/commercial use?
Absolutely not. While I am always in support of creators inspiring each other with our works and endeavors, that does not mean anyone should engage in art theft (intentional or otherwise). Under no circumstances may you repost, reupload, reproduce, copy, trace, modify, sell, use, tokenize, scrape/integrate into A*I, and/or otherwise claim as your own any of my art/written works. Never assume a piece of art shared online in yours for the taking - that is someone else’s hard work and passion, and you need to respect that.
Can I dub one of your comics?
As flattering as that would be, I worry about lack of credit or my work being stolen for others’ content, so I sadly have to say no.
Why is there a big watermark on your art?
The state of the internet today has made me extremely paranoid about things like art theft, bad-faith reposts, nonconsensual integration, etc., so I make sure to sign and WM anything original I post. I know it’s not exactly fun to look at (maybe even distracting or bad for engagement), but I’d rather be safe than sorry, so I guess I’ll just have to take that hit.
Do you have an askbox? Can we send in questions/comments/etc.?
Yes, the ask box is currently open, and I'm more than happy to receive any questions, comments, etc. you guys might have (even if it makes me a bit nervous, haha)! I just ask that you read the rules first before you submit anything.
Do you take requests/commissions/suggestions/collabs/etc.?
Sadly, I do not take art requests or suggestions unless I put out a specific call for them. I'm also not really in a position to take commissions either. Collabs I'm on the fence about - maybe with mutuals or folks I know personally.
Is this an inclusive space?
Of course! This queer little goblin accepts everyone under the LGBTQIA+ umbrella, along with folks of all shapes, sizes, backgrounds, disabilities, and colors. That said, there will be absolutely no tolerance for (inhale) racism, sexism, transphobia, queerphobia, xenophobia, misogyny/misandry, bigotry of any kind, ableism, p***philia, inc*st, selfc*st, z**philia, RPF, trolling behavior, self-promotion, the promotion of N*FTs or A*I art, or any otherwise harmful, toxic, or hurtful rhetoric. Anyone seen behaving as such will be blocked, reported, and forgotten. :)
Is this an all-ages space?
Hmm… I’m gonna have to say no. While I probably won’t be posting/sharing anything too lewd or graphic, I’m not opposed to things like swearing, angst, fluff bordering on suggestive, and discussions of mature subject matter (all of which I will make sure to tag with content warnings as necessary). Obviously, I can’t police everyone who wanders into this blog, especially since some people omit or lie about their ages online, so the best I can do is ask for good faith on your part. If you are under 18, interact at your own risk. The last thing I want is to make anyone (myself included) uncomfortable because there are kids in an adult-allocated space. Again, I hope you understand.
What is your stance on shipping?
The vernacular around pro- or anti-shipping confuses the hell out of me, so I’ll just try to explain my personal philosophy on it: I have ships I like, ones I’m indifferent to, and ones I won’t touch with a ten-foot pole. I only reblog (and tag) ship-related content I’m in support of, even if it’s not one of my personal favorites. Most importantly, I don’t bother others about their personal preferences. Anything I don’t like or don’t support, I simply do not engage with. Or, if it makes me too uncomfortable, I block outright. The same should apply to your experience as well - if you ever see ship stuff here that you don’t like, feel free to block the tags (look for specific pairings, ship names, and/or my personal tag #veins ships) or even the blog entirely. You are not obligated to like the things I like or engage with media you don’t enjoy. Respect for each other and curation of your personal online space is always key. Additionally, I 100% will not ship minors, blood relations, self x self, anything relating to b*stiality, or anything relating to RPF.
Are you okay?
No, not even a little bit... but fuck it, we keep going.
Why do you put a comma before the “and” in a sequence of three or more words?
You can take my Oxford comma away from me when I’m cold, dead, and rotting in the dirt.
Is there anything else?
Nah, I think we’re good for now. Thanks for taking the time to read all this. Hope it wasn’t too rambly or weird - just trying to cover all my bases. I hope you all have a lovely timezone out there, wherever you are. Be sure to wash your hands, wear your mask, and stay hydrated. Remember to be strong, be safe, and, for the love of dog, be kind. Peace!

also maybe 3 games u think are underrated...? im always after smth new to play 👀
These are 3 indie games I’m devastated I don’t see more stuff about them…
Cosmic star heroine is a relatively short chrono trigger spiritual successor that I had an absolute blast with. Combat was fun, there are almost a dozen playable characters by the game’s end and they use new mechanics that weren’t present in chrono trigger like style + hyper attacks, also instead of mp you have limited use of skills and need to defend to regain points, it makes more sense in practice. The game is so charming and there’s hilarious moments that poke fun at scifi tropes and memes and programming jokes. And the world is super cool, I don’t remember too much of the overarching plot but I liked the characters a lot. As far as chrono trigger-esque games go, it’s not as good as sea of stars, but it’s definitely better than I am setsuna or lost sphear. I wish more ppl played it!
Slime-san is a puzzle platformer that starts out simple but gets pretty fucking bonkers. You’re a cute little slime who can dash and jump and cling to walls, and as you complete stages new obstacles are added and it really ramps up the difficulty. Theres a lot of content and free dlc and you can change the color scheme and whatnot, it’s a really cute faux-retro aesthetic. Theres even boss fights which can be so brutal! It’s definitely challenging and I never completed the new game + thing but I should go back to it sometime because it’s a lot of fun. But it’s also hard.
And okay, this one was pretty highly rated when it came out but I never see ppl talking about it even though I know it’s relatively popular at least at the time of release, but I cannot recommend axiom verge enough. It’s the best metroidvania I’ve played that wasn’t a Metroid or Castlevania game (sorry hollow knight). Youre a physicist with amnesia on an alien world trying to get home and you kind of get thrown into this plot by these beings called the Rusalki… I won’t say much more than that but the lore is fucking delicious and is explored more in its not-quite-as-good-but-still-recommended sequel. Everything about the game is awesome, and it was all primarily done by one guy, Thomas Happ, and he uses the profits to help make more games and care for his son’s medical bills. But for the game itself, it’s sooo atmospheric, it leans hard on the Metroid influences, the bosses are sick, the challenge feels just right. There’s a ton of weapons you can find so you have a really robust selection to fit whatever play style you prefer, and to also help solve puzzles. Theres also abilities that help you move to new areas, but instead of your standard double jump type deal it’s things like sending out a drone to get into small spaces or being able to glitch through walls. It’s fucking great. I still think about the plot regularly and what’s next for this universe ooo…. The plot twist is so good ALSO my url is the name of one of the characters, he states that athetos is from a Greek word meaning “one who is rejected, or whose thoughts shouldn’t be entertained”. I can’t verify any of that though as I know zero Greek.
Also these aren’t underrated I’d say but I also really recommend tunic (Zelda inspired action adventure), sea of stars (as mentioned earlier), the messenger (ninja gaiden-esque action platformer that becomes a metroidvania), into the breach (roguelite(like? Only a single character Carries over between runs)), baba is you (the smartest a puzzle game ever), and shovel knight (he’s a knight with a shovel yay)

yaknow what since im obsessing over sims and stressing over ignoring animal crossing; what's all of your ocs fave video games? (or just genre works too!)
Ooooh that's a good one. I don't play a lot of games IRL so. Just mostly the genre here
Jin - Hmmmmm, I can see Jin using video games as an outlet for their anger when they were younger. Essentially those beat em up games that don't really require strategy and just beating things to a pulp. It's very cathartic.
Kohaku - Doesn't usually play video games, but she would like those survival/scavenger games. She already does it irl, so it comes easy to her.
Kenji - I think Kenji has a wide variety of tastes when it comes to video games, despite his appearance. I think the only thing he doesn't really care for or stomach are those war games n horror. His top faves would be jrpg and general turn based rpg's ( so think omori and undertale). Racing games are also very good.
Aiko - Fighting games,I think. Like smash, or street fighter. She would really enjoy those.
Beryl - Beryl has two older siblings, one of which is a more avid gamer than they are, so any equivalent to Smash or Mario kart is something they would absolutely enjoy. They have a guilty pleasure of beating the others in said games: you can't blame her! She's a younger sibling, they deserve some victories.
Danica - Indie horror is a favorite, surprising no one. But she actually tends to lean towards more cozy games. Think stardew valley or animal crossing.
Kiran - Puzzle games are something that Kiran gravitates to! But if I'm being honest, he's more likely to listen to video games soundtracks while working ( or napping) than sit down and play a game. He's more of a watcher than doer.
Alexis and Elliot - they have most experience with group party games ( with Cheren and Bianca) and absolutely love rhythm/ music games. Surprising no one lol.
Eva - Hmm. This one's hard. I have no doubt that Eva plays video games but not sure if I can place a personal favorite for her. She kinda just goes with whatever.
Wayne - Anything sci-fi. This kinda goes for movies too. Specifically stuff with cool aliens n stuff.
Jude - Horror lol. Indie horror, they think those are more compelling than triple A games.
Dante - Also horror, but don't tell anyone.
Ames - Hmmmmm. Another hard one. Really shows my lack of knowledge here lol. The best I can describe it is like ...funky? Funky little games, if that makes sense.Ream weird but endearing ones. Maybe Undertale like her brother. Yeah.
Ray - is very good at puzzle games, but also games in general??? The type of guy who you call to do a hard level for you. Actually now that I think about it, he would like Hollow Knight.
Naomi- Cozy relaxing games! She would find games like stardew valley amusing.
Carol - MYSTERY GAMES!!!! Ghost trick would be a fav. Also otome games, ironically.
Luca - I think he would really like the pokemon equivalent to Mario kart!
R.B- Doesn't exactly know, she's still figuring herself out in terms of her likes and dislikes. Penny and Luca are helping her with that. Right now she just goes with whatever.

Pinned Post (Updated)
Hiya! I'm Jake (or Julia, because why not have 2 names? gender is a suggestion anyways) pronouns: they/he (though, she/her is also acceptable. bigender vibes) I mostly use this blog to reblog shitposts, reblog art, and talk about games i love. I try to avoid reblogging any sort of serious matters.
(I may rewrite this interests section, but I'll just edit the post. Spent time on the tags section.)
I really like posting minecraft ideas or concepts here, because I'm a big nerd for the game, and ... well, is it fitting to say I'm an aspiring game designer? Game design fascinates me.
I'm also a big nerd about writing and stories in general, particularly in games. I'm that one person who'll probably interact with every npc before moving on. I enjoy theories... lore... all that stuff. Games are art!
In terms of fandoms / fixations, ha... well, my interests fluctuate a lot. In terms of here, I'm sure minecraft will stay consistent. even my interest in deltarune fluctuates. But I'm really into lots of games, especially indie games.
My favs include minecraft, terraria, undertale/deltarune, pokemon, stardew valley, risk of rain 2, hollow knight, celeste, oneshot, ori, and much more! Besides games? I love uh... music. Not that I'll talk much about it here I imagine. I love... seeing cool art! I love... writing! I love... cats and dogs!
I try to tag my different types of posts, and I'll especially try to use the following tags more consistently following today.
TAGS I USE AHEAD:
#reblog - reblogs, whether they're art, shitposts, whatever (#fav reblog if I really love the post)
#jake ramblings - general ramblings of mine, if you care to hear about them. May mostly be me appreciating my friends and cats.
#[game name] ramblings / idea (i.e minecraft idea, cassette beasts ramblings, pokemon idea) - because I love thinking up ideas for games like minecraft... or just talking about how much i appreciate game design or just. may be having fun. I'll always tag the game itself, too.
#[game name] spoilers - for if a post contains spoilers or leaks for a game, although any spoilers will also be behind a "keep reading" line.
#toxicity / toxicity mention - if a post mentions people who are generally shitheads on the internet, I'll tag that it mentions toxicity. If I'm responding directly to someone being toxic, it'll include the toxicity tag. Mostly goes for me ranting about minecraft haters.
#vent - a vent post, which I will always include a "keep reading" line in. Don't feel the need to read these, I just like getting them out there sometimes.
#mild vent - similar to the above, but more casual frustrations than serious topics. Same rules apply
#post im proud of - I'll retroactively be editing some of my posts to include this tag, it'll act as a sort of... best of my posts, I'd say. The posts that I would like people to see the most, anyways.
and finally, #jake meta post, for posts like these, anything pertaining to the blog itself

What are all the monkeys music taste like, I assume they all like traditional Chinese music, but I'm curious what are their more modern taste are like.
(indeed they all like traditional chinese music stuff n also they Do have some instruments-related skills as well so they Make it too)
WELL with grollow we decided that SWK would be into Lady Gaga, Six Ear into Kesha n Ma is into Rihanna
but like outside of those three specific sorta a bit meme picks hmm....
Ma would be a fan of rock n roll n prolly vocaloid. somethin das a bit chaotic in a violent way, angry vibes, smth thatd get her pumped. big fan of electric guitar riffs, maybe some game soundtracks. she is a bit of a gamer in her free time. one time she listened to the Doom soundtrack for the whole day cuz shes fuckin nuts
I can imagine SWK likin instrumental stuff but also the kinda music das like Crywank, Neutral Milk Hotel, but also silly stuff like Bill Wurtz. i can imagine him listenin to shit like Imagine Dragons too... he prolly lets the radio play whatever the fuck it will spill out
Six Ear, hmmmm.... Indie music? Indie music most of the time but also hes the physical manifestation of anger so sometimes he REALLY has to blast some heavy metal to just kinda fuckin Vent It Out. i have a playlist das specifically for "sickly" songs, hed fuck with that as well (example: Bitter and Sick by One Two, Trust Me from The Devil's Carnival). musicals, of course of course, dark academia, prolly some dramatic string instrumentals, the Dont Starve ost specifically, Grimm Hollow Knight theme my gooood......

tunic spoilers (not finished game yet) (long post ahead)
i wish i could've added more logs so far but i never got around to it.. i made a lot of progress 👍 i went so far with a stick i headed toward the frog domain and stealthed around to unlock the place where u need to put the orb.. with a stick...yeah it was grueling. it was a mad dash for opening the gate though it was insane that i pulled it off... and then i realized i wasn't streaming for roger so i reenacted it with stuff i had on my desk.. i explored probably most of the atoll with a stick 😭
also i was worried whether or not spending the items at the altars would upgrade or sell.. initially i assumed it was the first but then i was like what if it was the second.. i finally got around to upgrading oh my god. also equipping cards. also estus flasks. i went through these two areas with a stick and no upgrades of any kind it was insane but now i can kill anything (not true) and i went mad with power (semi true).
since i forgot where the orb was i headed back to the first area and lo and behold made some actual progress -> east garden -> beneath the well -> dark tomb.. now i'm trying to figure out how to advance in the west garden so... also i need to use more bombs so bad so i can figure out what the prize is.
Tumblr media
i don't have much thoughts or speculation for the story.. here are some bits and pieces. i went in only knowing that it was wayneradio's game of the year and that it's a game you have to go in blind and he was really insistent (and defensive) when someone said the game was awful or something that they didn't "play enough".. so i went in expecting this to be a time of subversion of le genre and/or something that would blow my mind i wanna knowww
also i watched a trailer of tunic in some indies game list video a little while ago and the only thing i remember was this
Tumblr media
so 👍 the manual is very cute and how it has pen marks and stuff and that you can lower it to see the crt(?) tv that you're playing the game on.. i think that probably would have some relation to the Big Thing this game will do.. i'm glad the game has an invincible mode as an option shout-out to game accessibility (shout-out to celeste and oneshot).. hollow knight should have that. tbh.
anyways seeing the tricolor symbol and obvious homage? reference? inspiration? to loz games although i've only botw but i'm sure it's doing something there. the symbol is in the load up too so i wonder.. all the mechanical bits of the world (autobolts.. that sometimes turn into tuning forks? they die with a mechanically musical sound.. the purple energy coursing through the network around the world and the leaky bit that had a similar autobolt death sound to them that made my vision purple.. the broken down triple eyed robots and the towers with the tricolor symbols) give me the impression of a computer or tv so i wonder if anything will happen to the crt or person playing. maybe they are parts of a circuit or motherboard (thinking of it since yesterday i played intense spot the difference with my friend and one of them was a stupid circuit board). i kinda expect to go off the rails at some point so i wonder if there'll be anything dramatic as a forced changed perspective from the game to the person playing the game. there's also the "hero" who died and looks awfully similar to me.. is that the fox ptorag? does that fate exist for them? are the awesome giant skull shopkeepers me from past lives (fox shaped)? is the shopkeeper related to the fox deity seeing as they are both foxes and have blue eyes? is the fox deity actually evil? is the hero actually evil? are the rudelings reincarnations of the fox's past lives? is "the wall" from which the fairies are from trying to stop me from changing a fate or hacking the world? the map has an image on a conjuror (an enemy?) who hold candles, and that "candles can be put out". that could be referring to just them, perhaps because they attack with they candles (i haven't met one i think). or do they also mean the candles on the map that mark the hero's grave/altar.. i really wanna put them out but i don't know how yet. i wonder if this game has multiple endings, though i don't get that impression..yet..
it's very interesting that you have to decipher the manual at least visually, if not textually. forces the player to rely on previous rpg and video gaming experience. perhaps its the devs experience on playing games and reading manuals they don't understand the language they are in. i really wonder if you can decipher the text, but i don't know how to go about it so i gave up. also they keep telling me to use items but i don't want toooo idk if they replenish.
the game is very fun so far, especially since i got the ball rolling and don't find myself dying as much.. still am dying though and i've had some scares and anguish my last session (last night). tried and finally got past the two birds (one eating slorm) in the atoll by killing them, but then the little squirming white big eyed thing that i remembered exploded before was following me very slowly so i looped around a bit near the birds before heading off to advance in hopes of losing it but that thing followed me so far and i went up the spiral tower trying to keep in mind not to get cornered by the freak to deal with the bird but had little magic points and health left and couldn't kill and the FREAK advanced up the stairs and cornered on the part sticking out i was screaming (never actually too loud bc i play late at night..but i do) thankfully the bird killed me instead of the little freak. i got past then on little health and ran into the 5 fairies and survived but got too scared to continue bc 1) low health 2) there was a purple moved like a spidery THING on a nearby island that immediately ran when i got close and i got so scared that it was going to either 1) run around and KILL me or 2) it was a planned event/sighting that wouldn't happen should i respawn monsters. i think if it's not the second it's probably the first or similar since everything loves killing me. i also got freaked out by the tentacles under the well.
i'm looking forward to playing more.. i think i'm doing a good job of inspecting and looking around as i tend to try to do when i play games.. be very thorough is my aim of the game. the cards and knowing whether or not the items with numbers are consumables (likely) is the most tempted i've been to look up a little info.. but i must resist so i can say i played the game without a guide.

I match you with... (っ^▿^)💨
Tumblr media
ATSUSHI NAKAJIMA!
First of all, from an MBTI and astrological point of view, your zodiac signs are healthy compatible, while your MBTIs will arrive at the perfect match except for some toxic aspects of the two sides! By the way, Atsushi loves looking into your green eyes and kissing your eyelids! :3 I can imagine you playing with his bangs too!
Your outlook on life, your hobbies and the secret softness of your personality makes Atsushi very happy. Because while he couldn't even had time to experience and love some simple things throughout his life, you are very determined to hold his hand and bring it to the top in the spiritual sense. Burnt or not, he will love to eat anything you cook. And he will suggest making an album of the photos you took <3
your logic and knowledge of certain things will save him from acting on his feelings. And his curiosity and gentleness in everything will make you feel satisfied about the issues that you may have been missing for years. Atsushi takes great care to do his best for you and be a therapist lover the way you are to him. By the way, your love for different creatures makes him feel at peace with himself and this is one of his favorite qualities about you! <3
I think that the thing he can't stand about you is your courage haha! Because you like to try new things and not avoid scary things, sometimes you give him minor heart attacks KJSDLFJASLDFG he's more of a happy-go-lucky type on his mind. But don't be afraid! By sacrificing some moments to each other, you are not hurting each other and you are solving this problem!
I can see your relationship progressing by talking and solving each other's past troubles and I can see you find peace in each other <3 Some of your memories: the way you shouted and jumping at Atsushi who almost stepped on a bug while hiking, the first kiss you shared on the first mountain you climbed together, hugging on the sofa while talking to each other at home and you excitedly introduce the new rock music you listen while he feels like his ears are bleeding but still has same excitement like you T^T
And finally, a personal comment: What you wrote about bugs made me smile because it was so sweet and tragicomic that you added something like that when everyone else was adding bugs to things they hate. 😭😭
Hope you'll like it! <3

steam next fest demo thoughts!
mendacium - i wasn't even going to try this bc for some reason the screenshots didn't grab me, i was content to just add it to my wishlist, but it was received very positively so i tried it. and honestly? kind of the best demo i played lmao. it grabbed me so fast! it feels so good to play!! the music the visuals the controls all of it it just works. the only thing i don't love is the extreme knockback you get when attacking, and it also seems to happen when you're standing on a platform and pressing attack but not actually hitting anything. but absolutely amazing i think the devs know what they're doing and the game is going to be great
umbraclaw - i tried this on a whim not noticing it's by inti creates beforehand and it was pretty nice. i've tried multiple games by this dev which have all been misses for me but this one seems a bit different and i really liked what i played of it, will def check out the full game.
ultros - probably the best-received demo, and with good reason. it looks great, the concept is great, the in-game mechanics are also nice. however i can't say i was exactly blown away. there's just something about the controls that felt a bit off to me, especially the way the retaliation works. couldn't get the hang of it at the time and also sometimes it's a bit difficult to tell what you can interact with. but still good, one to keep an eye on for sure.
tales of kenzera - oh look an AA metroidvania. kind of inspired by the new prince of persia; looks great, i love the premise, the voice acting is also nice. but i barely played any of it because you can't rebind the movement keys freely and i literally can't play with wasd. it also runs pretty badly on my pc. i'll keep an eye on it, hopefully they change some things in the full game.
crypt custodian - yet another well-received one bc the developer has some experience, their previous games were also pretty good apparently though i have yet to play them. yeah, it looks really nice, it's very charming, the movement feels good and an isometric metroidvania is bound to be an interesting experience. i just hope it won't be too short.
phosfi - definitely inspired by hollow knight, i love the art and the colours and it's another one that grabbed me instantly. i do feel like it needs some more polish for the full game to be successful but i will be playing it regardless.
william and sly - the first game is one of my favourite games ever so of course i had to try this. AND IT FEELS SO GOOD. ohhhhh my god you go so fast, it should feel weird and uncomfortable and hard to control but somehow it doesn't? it feels so nice to play and it looks so good and it runs surprisingly well on my pc. i love this game and i hope it'll be long :')
there's also some other games i found unplayable bc of controls you can't rebind n stuff. also steam now has this thing, this weird ass popup that tells you to grab a controller and kick back. apparently the intention is to make pc players understand that you can relax when playing on pc as well? which is nice but. i fucking hate the popup. it showed up during some games that play perfectly with keyboard and it's so freaking annoying especially if the game also has a screen that tells you it's 'best experienced with a controller'.
ew. i know yall only test your games using controllers for some reason but how about you let me decide.
but anyway yea, pretty nice, and since so many of these games are expected to be released this year, i think it's gonna be a good year for indie games and especially metroidvanias.
