If Clarice Starling was in Hannibal Season 4, would she be in a love triangle with Hannibal and Will? (God.. I hope no. It will only complicate things more)

shout-out to the makers of NBC Hannibal for (clearly) reading all four books about Hannibal Lecter by Thomas Harris and going "hmm. actually we will make the gayest possible version of this" going on to COMPLETELY disregard the other main character and (canon) ?love interest? of the series and never even MENTION Clarice Starling. Like it's so funny to me that she never even appears on the show when book! Will Graham literally fucks off after The Red Dragon and wants nothing to do with any of this anymore and book!Hannibal is obsessed with Clarice in the same way that tv!Hannibal is obsessed with tv!Will. like they really took a whole book franchise, picked out the cherries, and made it their own personal little gay AU. that's so refreshing and should be a leading example in television adaptations. in this essay i will

reread Red Dragon this past summer and 10/10 great decision
Will is such a compelling character, you can see why this book got so many adaptations (2 movies and one show). even though the book just covers the tooth fairy/red dragon murders, you can see Will's past in so many ways. How much he struggles with his empathy and his insight into people's heads. His empathy and care for the victims AND killers is really what separates him from typical gruff'n'tuff true crime protagonists. The weight that working in his field has/had on him. He is a sympathetic character, yet people in the book as well as readers can definitely see how he could be threatening, scary to know socially. How much he struggles to contain himself and be 'normal', even though he is being asked to use the darkest parts of his mind. And though Hannibal plays a much smaller role in this book than the others (and he played a larger role in the following books BECAUSE he was so interesting to people) you still see hints of a shared past and familiarity between Hannibal and Will.
Even separated from the context of the NBC hannibal show, it makes you wonder what exactly happened between them, how well did they know each other? Even if your interpretation isn't romantic, its interesting no matter how you slice it. Does Hannibal's insight into Will stem purely from his ability to analyze people and not from having an 'intimate' relationship/friendship/work colleagues in the past? How much did Will actually know Hannibal, did they ever see each other socially outside work or anything even approaching friendship? Like yes, obviously I adore the nbc hannibal obsessive gothic romance between them, but even without the context of a falling out between them it surprises me that Will in never mentioned in the following books (beyond one single reference from jack crawford anyway). It would've been very veryyyyy interesting to have seen Clarice Starling and Will Graham interact at all, like even a single letter exchanged.
I could easily see Clarice being intrigued by Jack's descriptions of Will, enough to send a polite inquiry for help/insight into Hannibal or the Buffalo Bill Case. Whether Will would just chuck that letter into the trash or actually help is up for interpretation, but still! I could see a correspondence between Will and Clarice so easily. They actually have somewhat similar backgrounds (and a great disinterest in discussing their past) though their reasons for joining the FBI are somewhat different, they both care very much about the victims in their cases. Will begrudgingly taking on a mentorship role with Clarice because shes's persistent and courageous enough to pursue help from a guy who is a world champion at shutting people out and he just cant help himself from wanting to help save people from danger despite his own best interests. Will's advice would probably have been more helpful than Crawford or Hannibal.
And just imagine Hannibal's reaction in Silence of the Lambs if Clarice dropped the fact that she had spoken to Will 'dont text me dont call me dont write me letters dont even fucking look at me' Graham. Like "oh. he. responds to YOUR letters hm? well did you know Will is scarred and ugly and afraid of his own mind?.........did he....mention me?". Clarice could've easily leveraged help from Hannibal by making it competitive between him and Will. "Ah yes, that is a fascinating insight Dr. Lecter, Will Graham said something similar when he and I spoke." just playing them off each other and she WOULD'VE too lol i love her
And how would book! Will have reacted to Hannibal's escape from prison/subsequent life on the lam? I guess people's most common interpretation is Will being like "never fucking call me again" after Red Dragon is all said and done, even that case was one he was pushed out of 'retirement' to work on by Jack. And maybe Will just did not want to engage with Any Of It at all after that. But I find it hard to believe Hannibal didn't send him even one semi-taunting letter like the : "i have no plans to call on you, the world is more interesting with you in it" letter he sent Clarice. Or that Will wasn't tapped for info/help by ANY law enforcement agencies as the guy who caught Hannibal way back when. I mean at the very least freddie lounds would've OH wait he did actually die in the books lmaooo 🤣
Anyways as a book Red Dragon is a great read, a tense murder mystery worth flipping through. The movies are great adaptations of the book, not many important details are cut out. NBC Hannibal is still my favorite interpretation of the Red Dragon book, though obviously the show takes from the whole series not just the first book. I'm still sad we never got to see Clarice in the show as she's one of my favorite fictional characters but any role she'd have played in the show would be soooo diminished from her role in the books as her story/dialogue was portioned out to other characters on NBC Hannibal (Will and Miriam mostly but also, Abigail and Bedilia to some degree) so perhaps its for the best 😐

first film watched in 2024: the silence of the lambs
easily one of the best movies i've ever seen imo, anthony hopkins and jodie foster just have incredible chemistry in every scene they're together and it was less transphobic than i was expecting, like sure there's still issues with it because it was the 90s (and the books it was based on were written through the 80s and into the early 90s) but it could've been A Lot Worse

My favorite ‘Hannibal’ lines from the original script that didn’t make it in the film
1: Crawford: (to Clarice) “He likes you, Starling. Seven years gone, not a trace, and he writes to you. You know what that means.” (2000 Draft Revision, pg. 81)
2: Crawford: (to Clarice) “The stalker who says he likes you is far more dangerous than the one who says he wants to kill you.” (2000 Draft Revision, pg. 81)
3: Hannibal: (to Clarice) “Will you stay with me in my prison cell? Hmmm? I suppose it wouldn’t be that much worse than yours.” (2000 Draft Revision, pg. 98)
4: Hannibal (to Clarice): “Don’t you want to harm those who have forced you to consider it? I know you never would, but wouldn’t you like to? Wouldn’t it feel good? It’s all right to admit it. It’s perfectly natural. To want to taste the enemy.” (2000 Draft Revision, Pg. 99)
5: Hannibal: (to Paul Krendler) “I assure you, though, you’ll love the second course, that is if I can serve it before Clarice bashes my head in.” (2000 Draft Revision, pg. 115)
6: Hannibal: (to Clarice) “No. I think a new life lies before you. A better life. With me? Hmmm, there’s a thought.” (2000 Draft Revision, pg. 117)
7: Hannibal: (to Clarice) “I came halfway around the world just to watch you run in the woods. Run with me, Clarice.” (2000 Draft Revision, pg. 117)
8: Hannibal: (to Clarice) “That’s my girl. If you hadn’t tried, I would have killed you… But don’t try again…I mean it.” (2000 Draft Revision, pg. 119)
9: Hannibal: (to Clarice) “Oh, Clarice, you are the honey in the lion. In times to come, whenever you see yourself naked, whenever you see the scar- the quality of the stitching - you’ll remember this moment - and your lips will burn.” (2000 Draft Revision, pg. 119)
10: Crawford: (to Clarice regarding her scar) “You don’t need to hide it. Your doctor did a nice job. You can hardly see it-.” (2000 Draft Revision, pg. 120)

I hope you're doing okay, could we have a christmas fic where scara gives us presents and we give him presents too n stuff and and fluff!! lots of christmas comfort fluff please <3
Scaramouche x fem!reader. Christmas fluffy fluff fluff. I made this Modern AU so I could reference Rudolph: The Red Nosed Reindeer.
I am doing okay❤️ I'm feeling a bit down, so writing this is making me warm inside.
Scaramouche stared blanky down at the gift wrapped boxes sitting in front of him on the couch. There were four or five boxes wrapped in various patterns of Christmas wrapping paper with green and red bows on top.
And there you sat, looking beautiful as hell with a smile on your face.
It always bewildered Scaramouche whenever you, someone so far out of his league he wasn't playing the sport, wanted to give him gifts. But it was always a few moments later that he was able look passed his bewilderment when your eyes glistened at thought of making him happy.
He would go through that bewilderment, content with never understanding it just to see the way your eyes sparkled like that when gave you have him gifts.
"Well go on, silly boy, open them," You said, grinning as you poked your finger on one of the bows. "Then we can watch Rudolph: The Red Nosed Reindeer together after we open gifts."
Scaramouche could never say no to watching these silly Christmas specials with you (even though he found the Grinch really funny). Especially Rudolph.
He was nerdy little unaccepted Rudolph, and you were sweet Clarice, ignoring all the other reindeer showing off to pine for and fall in love with him.
He opened your gifts one by one, handling the wrapping paper delicately, only tearing it when he had to because you'd put thought into choosing the wrapping paper as well.
You'd gotten him a new keyboard for his gaming PC, a guitar pick with a purple cat on it, books that he wanted, and new ear buds.
Blushing, he looked away shyly, putting his hand on your head to stroke your hair. "Thank you," to which you smiled so big. Worth it. It may have sounded awkward coming from him, but he genuinely meant it.
"I have gifts for you," A whole pile of them, actually. He'd shopped months in advance for you for Christmas. He didn't reach for boxes just yet, though. Instead, to took a long red string out of his pocket.
Scaramouche motioned for you to give him your hand. He tied one end of the red string around your pinky. He shook his head when you reached to help him when he started to tie the other end around his pinky. He laughed softly, seeing you looked confused.
"It's the red string of fate," He clarified, curling his pinky around yours once he'd finished tying it. The blush on his cheeks darkened, "I wanted to make one for us as a Christmas gift to you," A smile tugged at his lips as she leaned in to give you a quick kiss, "a symbol of love and devotion."
Tears almost welled into your eyes. It was a such a genuine and thoughtful gift. One that came straight from his heart. He'd always been the best with gifts like that.

The ending of Hannibal the novel explained
Tumblr media
(aka the breastfeeding scene)
Here's the passage (end of Chapter 101):
Tumblr media
I thought everyone was kidding about the breastfeeding kink jokes until my partner read Hannibal and the whole ending flew over their head. Their main takeaway was "that was weird." When I checked reddit, it seemed everyone was confused there too. I was gobsmacked to see one guy say that Thomas Harris was playing some cruel joke on the reader by writing an ending that didn't make sense!
How many people are reading Hannibal like this, completely missing the resolution to Hannibal's character arc? They must finish the book confused about what it was all about in the first place. So here's how I understand it!
First, I need to get this out of the way: a lot of people hate this scene, and from what I understand it's because they're weirded out by the "breastfeeding kink." Which is fine, but it makes me want to gently hold them by the hand and tell them that it's ok for someone to suck on a nipple. It happens all the time. Sometimes it just feels good, sometimes it's part of a breastfeeding fantasy, and sometimes it's literal breastfeeding. Between consenting adults, this is all fine and normal. Let's all move past this knee-jerk repulsion (or alternatively, sit in our discomfort and expand our horizons) so we can analyze this piece of art together. :)
Next, authors LOVE Freudian psychoanalysis. Even though it's all nonsense, it's full of literary allusion and makes for compelling narratives and character studies (childhood maladjustment, repressed memories, etc), which is basically catnip for a writer. Thomas Harris was no exception, and probably creamed himself (as I did) when he learned that Freud's oral-sadistic stage was also termed the "cannibalistic stage," referring to the time when an infant is growing teeth and begins to bite at the breast--the psychosexual urge to devour and destroy the thing you love. What could be more appropriate for Hannibal?
Next, consider the pattern of Hannibal's Il Mostro murders. He killed young couples in one of the most romantic cities in the world, then arranged them as Chloris and Zephyr from Botticelli's Primavera, exposing Chloris's left breast just like in the painting. In classical art, an exposed breast is often a symbol of fertility. Chloris is associated with spring, new growth, and transformation.
Perhaps, at the time, Hannibal rationalized these murders as retribution for rude behavior. Maybe the couples were performing disgusting PDA. Maybe they were obnoxious tourists on their honeymoons. Either way, it's clear to the reader that Hannibal has some deep-seated hang up about sex and romance.
The particulars of this hang up are open to interpretation, but based on Hannibal's obsession with the rape and transformation of Chloris as well as his embarrassment at the paintings of Leda and the Swan in the German's house, I think it's safe to say that Hannibal feels like any relationship he has with a woman who isn't aware of his true (monstrous) identity would involve a degree of violence/lack of consent. He is forever barred from normal romance.
Having given up on sex/romance, Hannibal is unable to consciously recognize his desire for Clarice, so he sublimates it into a more general familial love. He longs for a return to innocence, to return to the time before he ate Mischa and became an unlovable monster (cue the teacup metaphor).
But even familial love seems like too much to hope for, so he sublimates it further into something that seems more attainable: resurrecting the person whom he loved and devoured, and who loved him in turn (Mischa) through Clarice.
So we have the breast as a symbol of sex/fertility (Chloris/Clarice), as an object that is loved and devoured (Mischa), and as a literal source of sustenance that must be given up during infancy (mommy).
Big brain Clarice connects all these dots and, in the very same style of therapy that Hannibal has been using on her, distills Hannibal's psychological problems into a single poetic gesture that completely fixes Hannibal in an instant, proving that she's not only his intellectual equal, but is, in some ways, his superior.
When Clarice asks, "Did you ever feel that you had to relinquish the breast to Mischa? Did you ever feel you were required to give it up for her?", she's ostensibly asking Hannibal if he's stuck in the oral stage of childhood development (which yeah he probably is). On a deeper level, she's asking Hannibal to consider if he's given up on love.
When Clarice exposes her breast in the same fashion as Chloris, says, "You don’t have to give up this one", and suspends the drop of wine from her nipple, she is shifting his perception of her breast from familial devoured sustenance to a sexual object. Basically, "Why do you want me to pretend I'm your sister when we could be banging?" Hannibal is being aged out of his childlike mindset, not regressing into one.
There are other layers of meaning in this act. The hedonism of using thousand dollar wine for food play is a sign of Clarice's character development. The way Hannibal kneels before Clarice is a position of subservience, but could also be interpreted as devouring Clarice in a way that's new to him. It's the most self-actualized thing Hannibal has done since escaping prison (LOL) and marks the end of his hero's journey (as one of the first things we see him do in Hannibal Rising is nurse).
Personally, I don't read this scene as breastfeeding kink. Yeah, Clarice talks about breastfeeding, but that was more a metaphor for other stuff. Considering the direction of Hannibal's character arc, I understand this scene as him briefly licking the wine off before they have sex. But to each their own! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
ANYWAY, yeah, it's unsettling. It's obviously meant to be. But it's beautifully unsettling! Hate it all you want, but this is peak cannibal romance, to me!!

hello, lamb! what are your fav hannigram fanfics? xx
I'll give you a worthy fic rec, anon! (all on ao3)
The Seventh Sense: it's my go-to comfort fic, it's lengthy and I always reread it out of order simply because there are so many chapters where it's just fluff and smut and them being husbands. I love the details on the writing, and how it is first person Will's pov. Slightly ooc behavior sometimes, but minor and passable. It's essentially post-fall murder husbands living in Europe, being husbands in their fancy hotel rooms. There's plot and even Clarice, but it's mostly them being in love and such. Bram Stocker's Hannibal: absolutely perfect, it's theatrical and over the top, first person in Hannibal's pov (for most of the fic, but it changes povs quite regularly). What makes it a favorite for me it's their dynamic of worshipper/pretty princess lol. I love me a dainty Will (I blame Hugh) aesthetic and in this fic, we get two Wills! One that is more like our original Will and one who is a past life Will, our dainty indulgence. Trigger warning: quite a lot of Alana/Will actually, but idk, they make it up for it (believe me, otherwise it'd be unbearable for me, so rest assured, it's fine and it doesn't ruin the fic). Also: victorian! Cuts Unscene: essentially little moments we "didn't see on the show", you know how we always say we wanted those in between scenes? This is the fic, but as if they were a thing since the start, but we just didn't see it onscreen lol. It's amazing and even has season four, although I like the iteration of seasons one to three best. I adore when they write them together since season one, and this is one of my favorites in that category! The Cat's Meow: crack, incredibly sweet where Hannibal is a russian blue kitty cat, it's short and the cutest. Shark Tank: they meet in prison, Will is H's prison bitch for a lack of a better term lol, this one grows on ya, the first time I tried, I didn't like it, but then I gave it another shot and ended up enjoying it quite a lot, actually. It's obviously a bit crazy but, idk, I liked their dynamic. It's more on the fast-paced, "fun" side (by fun I mean not emotionally heavy as most hannigram's fics?).
Bloodline: shorter, super fun to read vampire AU, where both are vamps. Witty and fast paced, not victorian, though, like the dracula one, this one's more modern. Black Rock Mountain: amazing AU where Will wanders and Hannibal is a nice, fancy man who gives him a ride on the side of the road. It's shorter, but easy to read, fast paced and very hot.
How To Save a Life: very short and it's so sad because it's one of the best I've ever read. It's basically "Will tries to jump off a bridge but ends up offering himself up to a cannibalistic serial killer", but it's just...perfect. So them. A Great And Gruesome Height: beautifully written, classic post-fall, very realistic in terms of what could've actually happened in season four, amazing characterization, both are very congruent with canon.
As Soft As Wide As Air: another classic post-fall, what can I say besides really nice characterization, dialogue feels realistic/canon, and also a very probable season four version! Herringbone: um the worst? it's the best, but man, brace yourself, and definitely avoid this one if you're struggling with depression or anxiety, I had to take a few breathers with this one cause the author just absolutely *murders*, amazingly written, extremely realistic inner dialogue , you simply get pulled into the narrative and it is dark as fuck, not even in terms of content (I mean the show has dark content so lol) but more so in terms of Will's state of mind and wow, just wow, I ate 66 chapters up in two days, basically destroyed my sleep schedule and eye sight but worth it. I cried and I panicked and I felt every emotion. good luck lol, it's amazing but it's tough.

YOUR MAY/READER FIC I LOVED IT SO MUCH IT WAS TOO SHORT WE NEED MORE OMG IT WAS SO CUTE
your arms were wrapped as tight around your chest as you could make them, it still didn’t block the blistering cold that shocked your system. frozen to the bones, your teeth clacked until you reached the front door.
barley there knocks, too cold and shaky to give a real one.
but, she heard them.
“hello, clarice!” in an instant her smile dropped to a worried frown, “oh dear,” you’re tugged into her chest and that deep down, frozen blue starts to thaw.
you think it’s the unconditional love, no matter what you did, she’d still give it.
“why are you so cold?”
you hug her tighter, it makes her distressed. she’s never seen you so quiet and dark.
“i walked.”
may wants to discipline you, berate you about the weather and your safety. especially walking alone, at night in a next to nothing coat.
but, she figures there’s a reason.
“come in for tea?” it’s the whole reason you’re there. sometimes, you just really needed that deep love. the love that doesn’t come because it grows or stems from elsewhere. the kind of undeniable, only they can see something special kind of love. the parent kind of love.
you nod, your cheeks are still icy to the touch.
may talks while she moves around the kitchen, you listen and though she may not think it, her words of tenderness warm you from the inside out.
a steaming mug is placed in front of you, your hands cup the mug and you wrap the string of a tea bag around your finger.
a gentle hand is placed on yours, “do you want me to call peter?” she’s already pulling away to grab her phone but you stop her by grabbing her hand back.
“no, peter’s great but…” you tried to hold it in but it demanded to be let loose.
eyes wet and bottom lip trembling, may’s heart broke looking right at you.
“… i just really need a mom right now.”
the admission broke you, a sobbing mess. your breaths stuttered.
may’s never felt her heart break like that, a vulnerable truth. you’ve never cried so hard to her before, or asked her to help pick up the pieces of your hurt.
and may is all about helping those who need it most, where do you think peter got it from?
she doesn’t try to stop you, her arms hold you into her shoulder as you blubber, you feel her kiss your head.
“i’m here, sweetheart. i’m always here.”

“Why do you like clannibal so much it’s so weird”
Okok I know someone else did this but I wanted to put it into my own words, plus I forced my mom to read the books and she’s not a fan. I completely expected that which is exactly why I forced her to read the books 😭😭😭
Because it’s beautiful, raw, and real. Because it’s not weird you only find it weird because you can only physically see Hannibal as a monster. Because there’s so much character growth throughout both the books that’s so deeply hidden by a portrayed “monster” and portrayed “innocent” woman that so many people just skip past because they find it wrong. The way Harris hides the growth so subtly and that it hits you at once in the end you have to take a second look. You have to reread it to really grasp the fine details of how each character develops. How Clarice is going through her daddy issues but also questioning her own morals and the fbi. Even though it’s hidden in deep in his writing it’s so clearly there. Which is why she’s such a complex character she can hide that part of her and still keep doing her job because that’s how she was taught because she doesn’t want to give up faith in the one thing she wants to be good for her when it’s so obviously not. Because the system wasn’t designed for women to have that kind of success. Which is what’s so real about harris’ writing. He shows her success and then he shows how that early success for her (or for any woman unfortunately) can be detrimental to their career. As Harris has said before he’s never had to make anything up. Though I’m sure he was talking about the brutality of the murders, the fbi part of it is still unfortunately true. The fact that Hannibal is clearly very interested in her but he’s got a mental block (which we don’t know anything about till the ending ish of Hannibal unless of course you read Hannibal rising first) he’s complex in the fact that yes he sees himself as a monster and a psychopath but deep down he’s not but tries so desperately to cling to that by being arrogant and rude to people who he doesn’t find worthy. He wants people to see him as a monster because of what’s been taken from him so he builds that wall. And by building that wall he soon believes it himself until Clarice comes along and begins to make that wall crumble. Yes he still has those attributes from years of being that person but when he’s with her it’s simply not that what so ever.
Side note: Also the age gap isn’t weird both of their brains are fully developed when first meeting, it’s not like Clarice is 19 and Hannibal is 50 💀
Ugh I just love how you just have to REALLY read the book to see the engrained mental fight of both characters and the growth in them and not just in the last part of the book Hannibal.

For the song asks: Charlestor
charlastor/radiobelle has the benefit of relating to a lot of tropes and aesthetics in media that i already really enjoy and have a lot of content for. that being said, the songs ive chosen for them relate more to the pilot versions of these two characters, where it was speculated that alastor was going to be more of a mysterious, unflappable background mentor figure. ive heard their relationship being compared to that of clarice starling and hannibal lecter from silence of the lambs and hannibal, and i think some of that can vibe definitely be used here.
the first song that ever came to mind for these two (in recent memory) was a dangerous game from the jekyll and hyde musical (sung by anthony warlow and linda eder).
at the touch of your hand, and the sound of your voice, at the moment your eyes meet mine - i am out of my mind, i am out of control, full of feelings i cant define.
its a sin with no name, like a tiger to tame, (and though no-ones to blame) its a crime and a shame, and the angels proclaim its a dangerous game.
im a bit of a sucker for melodramatic gothic musicals, and the vision this song brings to mind is charlie wandering the empty halls of her dilapidated hotel and cautiously dancing with alastor and his army of half-sentient shadows. it relates to charlies pov more than alastors (as in this case he would be singing about her) and how they would have to tread carefully no matter what kind of close relationship they choose to partake in.
next up is me and mr wolf (the real tuesday weld).
you have the thing i love but the fear in me is way too much. if i open wide one of us may get lost inside. me or you, one of us is going to need to die.
my favourite version of this relationship is them being mutually fucked - alastor has never really given much thought to romantic love and hes shocked that hes willing to break so many of his own rules for this silly little slice of heaven in hell; charlie responds well to alastor setting clear boundaries against her sometimes-invasive behavior, and, like any good theatre kid, he "yes-and"s her (instead of vaggies pretty consistent "no"s). however, this song also touches on the fact that charlie is (or should be) at least alastors equal in power, if not far beyond him, and its a warning that neither of them should overstep in either love or anger.
the last one ill leave you with is actually one that was made canon by helluva - its look my way (paranoid DJ, but the alternate version sung by bryce pinkham) and its a bit of an ooc situation from alastors point of view.
unless its me, and no matter what in this world i could give - its not enough to get through the walls youve conjured up to live. is this what you feel? scorned by a world that cannot comprehend what you are, so ill grant you this mercy - this bind on our souls needs to end.
this is taking into account the deal that charlie makes with alastor in the penultimate episode of the first season of hazbin. the idea is that alastor (or at least, the speculative pilot version of alastor) strongly admires charlies perseverance against her own people - the very beings shes trying so hard to save. while charlie is a relatively open book he knows that she probably doesnt let anyone, not even her own girlfriend/best friend, see the emotional toll this project has taken on her (again, this tying in more to the pilot personalities of these characters), and hes upset that her deal with him has only made things worse in that regard. he makes the choice, to his own detriment, to sever the deal without her knowledge, so that if she doesnt keep her end of the bargain it will be of no consequence to her.
