My hot outsiders take.
I DONT SHIP JOHNNYBOY (pony and johnny)
not proofread
before you crucify me, wait. hear my logic. Ponyboy has been 14 for a month. Johnny is 16, almost 17. Johnny still thought Pony was 13, or maybe it slipped his mind (the church scene where he calls pony a ‘13 year old kid’). That’s quite the age gap, mentally and physically. Johnny is nearing the end of puberty and Pony is just starting puberty. Hormonal differences would be crazy. A freshman and a junior in my school dated, and let’s just say it ended in almost a damn court case.
Also, it says in the book, and I’m reading and writing this from my of the book.
“I don’t like going [to the DX] on weekends, because usually there’s a bunch of girls down there flirting with Soda. I don’t care much for girls yet. Soda says I’ll grow out of it. He did.”
By this, I’m assuming Ponyboy hasn’t really had the hormonal changes that make you have crushes. I’m no brain surgeon but there’s some sort of chemical reaction. By this logic, he has no romantic interests WHATSOEVER. not for girls, not for boys, not for ANYONE. I think that kinda makes the relationship pretty unimaginable.
Also, the people that use the excuse of “well they were cuddling in the church!” really falls flat as well. My best friend and I cuddle when she comes over, but that does not automatically mean we are romantically interested in each other (she doesn’t even swing that way.)
“The way Pony described Johnny in the book was so gay!” The only time he really goes into depth explaining him was this time:
“Johnny Cade was last and least. If you can picture a little dark puppy who’s been kicked too many times, and is lost in a crowd of strangers, you’d have Johnny. He was the youngest next to me, smaller than the rest with a slight build. He had big black eyes in a dark tanned face; his hair was jet black and heavily greased and combed to the side, but was so long it fell in shaggy bangs across his forehead.”
Now, I’m bi, and i have a great gaydar. that is more straight than a raw spaghetti noodle.
Now, i don’t care if y’all don’t agree but those are my reasons i don’t shop JohnnyBoy.
thanks for coming to my TED talk

fma rareship weekend: day 3, children
written for @fma-rareships's day 3! while intended to be an extension of the recognition 'verse, and therefore olivier x izumi, this one is also for sure olivier & al
~~~
“yeah,” al says into the phone, “no, all of the grandparents are here. yes, including olivier, she’s been here for three days. ostensibly, she’s here mostly to keep teacher from crying again, but personally, i think she might actually—oh, no, she heard me.” al covers the microphone with their hand and looks up at one of their newborn daughter’s many grandparents, who is valiantly trying to pretend she’s not tearing up.
“general,” al says, because even they have her permission to use her name now, sometimes it’s hard not to fall back on old habits, “did you think you weren’t—”
“i don’t like children,” she says, wiping her eye with the back of her knuckle.
this is amusing to al, given that yesterday, when she’d been holding zhiying for two uninterrupted hours, she’d audibly growled at anyone who tried to take her. so, they elect to ignore her statement for both their sakes. “you are her g—both mei and i consider you to be one of her grandparents. if… you want to be, that is.”
“alphonse,” olivier says, still pretending like she’s getting out of this, “i am your teacher’s wife.”
unafraid to interrupt her, al says, “are you going to tell me izumi and sig are anything other than…?” it’s a strong tactic. of course, al would rather tell her how much they love her. how she’s been a mentor to them in the last few years, how she inspires them, pushes them, and how they can’t imagine their daughter’s life without her in it. but that’s the kind of thing al knows they have to write in a letter, so she can cry about it in private and stoically thank them later.
olivier narrows her eyes. “of course not.”
“and?”
after staring at them for a while longer, olivier sighs. “no child of yours, no matter how cute, is going to ever call me ‘grandma.’”
al raises an eyebrow.
“but. it would be my honor to accept that role in zhiying’s life.” she pauses, and something like a smile tugs at the corners of her lips. “thank you for asking.”
al is almost positive she's going to cry about this later.
screaming crying throwing up
[VIDEO ID: Joy Wang is standing in front of a car, facing her mother, Evelyn Wang. The scene is dark, with minimal lighting from the left side of the frame. Joy is crying as she asks Evelyn, “why not go somewhere where your — where your daughter is more than just this”. She laughs ruefully as the camera turns to see Evelyn looking saddened. END ID]
do you think ponyboy stayed gold?
This is such a good question, thank you for asking, like I think about this all the time.
Short answer, yes.
Long answer;
Nature’s First Green is Gold: Ponyboy at the start
In the context of the poem, it ‘to be gold’ is to be pure and uncorrupted as all things are in the beginning. Yet life and time leaves changes and leaves marks on all things. Pony starts off the poem as pure and untainted, gold like the sun. Even the first line gives a subtle reference about this:
Tumblr media
Cherry sums Pony (at the start) up best here;
Tumblr media
It’s not fair to say Pony has gone through suffering at this point because he very much has. His parents have died, he’s often in danger because of the Socs, he has problems with Darry, he sees the suffering of his friends and knows he can’t do anything about him and the injustice of it hurts him. And he’s 14 which is rough enough without dealing with all that.
But he’s ‘not dirty’ (dirty having a double meaning here). He hasn’t been ‘tainted or corrupted’ by life yet, instead having played a passive role throughout all these events. He’s gold. But of course, nothing gold can stay.
Tumblr media
Nothing Gold Can Stay: Ponyboy throughout the novel
The Outsiders is a coming-of-age story. It’s the story about Pony transitioning from a boy to a man. It’s about identity and belonging (the song ‘Great Expectations’ from the musical following this theme). It’s about figuring out who you are and where you fit in, which Pony especially struggles with because he’s a greaser and greasers get the short end of the stick in life. It’s about a boy is even an outsider among outsiders (as @obliqueletterkennyreference pointed out to me during one of our conversations), because he can’t fit into the standards that have been places upon greasers (he’s both heavily embedded in greaser culture yet not greaser enough. It’s about Pony realising that the status quo hurts young kids and turns them into byproducts of a system that dooms them to either perpetuate the system or succumb to it.
Throughout the novel, Johnny and Dally symbolise the two paths Pony can take; to ‘stay gold’ or ‘get tough’. And it is only after they both die is Pony forced to choose between them both.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It really seems that Pony decides that it’s better to get tough. You can’t stay soft and good, because it means you’re keeping yourself open to hurt. It means you end up like Johnny, dying too young. The world is unfair and kills off those who are good and keeps those who aren’t alive. Thus, there must be no point to being good.
Tumblr media
And yet, Ponyboy picks up the glass so it won’t hurt anyone. He decides that the only reason someone should ever use violence is in self-defence and that Johnny is right to reject violence. He becomes more understanding towards others like Randy, Bob and Darry.
And when he reads Johnny’s letter, he realises how prevalent the issue of this systemic abuse, violence and oppression is and how it hurts all those involved and that it cannot be left as it is (i kinda talk about this here). Not only does he reject this but he takes an active role, different from all the other characters who recognise these issues yet accept them as a part of life and never challenge it, by writing the Outsiders.
And thus he decides to
Holding onto the Hardest Hue: Will Ponyboy Stay Gold?
‘Staying Gold’ basically means for Pony to stay soft and true to himself, to not close himself from the world’s good just to steer clear of its bad and harm, to always choose to do good and be kind. To continue loving the world and appreciating its good and beauty.
Tumblr media
The poem itself states: ‘(nature’s first green is) the hardest hue to hold’. And I think that inplies that staying gold will not be easily for Pony. Being gold is no longer his inherent nature; it’s a choice he has to make. It won’t be easy to stay gold. We see Pony internalise that ‘being tough keeps you from getting hurt’ and Dally isn’t entirely wrong.
But as Soda says, ending up like Dally is no way to be. To constantly be fighting and to harden yourself from any good. You can argue it’s not even possible because even though Dally says he doesn’t let anything affect him or care for anyone, he loved Johnny and Johnny’s death was what drove him into aggravating the police and killing him.
I think there may be a lot of back and forth for Pony. Growing and regressing and failing and getting up to try again and persisting. And he has the potential to get worse, to become tough and hardened. But it’s thematically important for Ponyboy to choose against it and staying gold, no matter how hard it can get.
And I’d say that this passage does imply that Pony will eventually get away from their town, the way Johnny, Dally and many others don’t.
DALLY AU he’s not dead yet
After Johnny dies I can just imagine dally going to church for the first time in a long time and just begging for Johnny to come back and dally trying to give himself up so that Johnny can come and relieve the rest of his life and that dally spends the whole night at that church just crying and begging and eventually giving up to then kill himself because he just can’t handle it and if Johnny’s dead so is he because there’s nothing left to live for….
✨Thank you to who every gave the idea of religious trauma please tag them if you remember I’m sorry I don’t ✨
not gonna comment on the plot of don’t worry darling, but what i will say is that florence pugh deserves an oscar. not just for her acting in general, but also because she spent a whole-ass movie having to pretend that harry styles was wildly attractive. a brave soldier.
Same person w the Darry n bugs hc, but I imagine that every time it gets bad all Darry can see is just bugs on the walls and ceiling, while he freaks out bc he feels like they’re crawling all over him. He needs them off, he needs them out, are they crawling under his skin or is he just paranoid? He needs them away from him-
I feel like this got especially bad once Pony ran away. Darry just zoning out, sitting in his recliner or laying down on the floor of the living room or in his bed, just staring at the ceiling as it moves and shifts in front of his eyes, millions of legs moving about, until one of the gang finds him just staring forwards, shaking wherever he is with panicked breaths.
You get to choose who finds him and where lmao I just find this highly interesting and since I can barely write for shit I kinda just end up asking ppl abt it.
OKAY— so idk how to write the whole bug crawly thing because tbh, I think if that happened to anyone they would just lose their absolute shit.
BUT I do think that after Ponyboy ran away, Darry would definitely start thinking about their parents more, including when he had to identify them. He would zone out, completely mentally and emotionally exhausted and would just zone tf out.
Like I feel like he’d wait on his recliner until ungodly hours of the night because a part of him would just be hoping that maybe his little brother will turn up; maybe he’ll walk through the front door, maybe the cops will come knocking saying they’ve found him or come with some sort of information. Besides, he couldn’t sleep anyway because even though he was tired, his mind wouldn’t let him.
But when he would lean back into his chair a bit and close his eyes, finally thinking he was gonna catch some rest during a time where he needed it, instead his mind would start wandering. And suddenly he was back in that morgue waiting for the mortician to call him into the room so he could identify two mutilated bodies of the people presumed to be his parents. Suddenly he could remember just exactly how they looked like after being crashed into by a freight train, and he could recall the smell, the sight, the bugs that had made themselves comfortable.
and it would nearly make him sick to him stomach.
Curtis Connors’ life is good, actually. A few adaptive devices and life would be great.
But nooo, his parents couldn’t let him “suffer” like that. No, they had to sign him up for some stupid lab trial. Great.
The other kids were at least getting paid to be there.
His parent’s only tried to explain the whole thing once. Something about how lizards grow their arms back, which is stupid because the only vertebrate capple of regenerating lost limbs is the axolotl.
The doctors involved weren’t much better about clarity, but they at least gave him a bit more insight into the whole, talking about how deers and sharks harness cancer. They assured him they weren't giving him cancer but like. Ominous. Not a fan of that.
There’s no way this ends well, but at least it probably won’t do anything at all...
