I studied English today. To be fair it wasn't a lot of studying. I just read the two books we're going to be tested on in Paper 2 and wrote a practise essay. If I can remember it well I can save time in the exam. I still need to revise for Paper 1.

So far I've finished Business, Math, and Ess tests. Thank goodness math and Ess went well. It's surprising because I barely studied for ess and some of the things I wrote in my essays were current affairs and stuff.

Another thing: I have developed a weird fascination for strawberries. I don't know what it is. Maybe it's the colour. All I know is that I wish to be swamped with strawberry things. I wish to turn into a strawberry demigirl and live in a strawberry house with my strawberry garden.

The fact that I called my English teacher “Girlie” and he responded with, “Wait, did you just call me ‘Girlie’🤨” and moved on like nothing happened💀

We were discussing existentialism cuz it pertained to the book we’re reading rn called The Stranger(also The Outsider) by Albert Camus. And somehow as our discussion got more and more morbid, talking abt death and apathy and suicide, the more my filter slipped and my online language came out??? I just went, “Girlie, we would rather off ourselves sometimes, why would we think abt murdering other people?🤨”

And yeah. Can’t forget the cackle he let out and how I got the whole class of 8 people to laugh out of (probably) second hand embarrassment 💀💀💀

Saussurean Linguistics for IB English Learner Criteria

Ferdinand Saussure said that a sign is made up of the signified and the signifier. The signifier is the visual pictorial element and the signified the verbal idea. For example if I say: dove is peace, dove is the signifier and peace the signified.

Communication

Saussurean semiotics talks about the sign and draws inference about the idea of the signifier and the signified.

Creativity

Philosopher Derrida pronounced the deconstruction of the sign. For him greater importance was given to speech over or writing.  Speech was privileged and writing marginalized.

Perspective

Signs signify presence or what is known as logo-centrism. Undoing the sign is freeing the sign from the signifier and the signified and gives perspective about the privilege and absence from the sign.

Identity

Signs create gender and norms of the society. Signs become biased when they connote the notion of privilege For example: black versus white, woman versus man, history versus myth, God versus the Devil.

Culture

Signs play a role in the drama of cultural evolution. The signs of popular culture are celebrity status, passive entertainment, soap and serial and social media addiction. Popular culture promotes mediocrity.

Transformation

Transformation as a sign of conceptuality is developing the idea of the self as a creative, gregarious, sensitive extrovert. By inflating and deflating a sign we can examine how culture and norms privilege some and marginalize others.

Between The Lines

When you read literature you get to see the work of someone else, and interpret it. Our experiences shape our understanding of people relationships. The same way we note the information from newspapers, facts like those influence how we read other forms of media like reels, or videos.

Acknowledging the importance of absorbing information we come in contact with and the way it influences what we read in the future plays a big part in how we see the world. Maus is perhaps my favourite books simply for way Spiegelman encourages us to question what's going on at each point of the work.

The media we consume is important because be it the news or stories, we note that someone has an intent behind the things they say. Just as Vladek presents himself as more preferable in his retelling, we see Spiegelman discredit himself in order to sate his guilt. Maus is the perfect example of why things are shown the way they are, and it encourages us to question the motives of the writers.

When you read a news article, the writers may want to influence you in thinking poorly about one country, or candidate, or procedure. Even in this day and age, propaganda can be widespread, and it was often used in the wars to boost morale, sharing selective information about victories and less information about defeats.

Remembering that all the media you consume has a secondary purpose is important. Be it Tiktok- where people want to monetise their views, or movies where certain thoughts are propositioned. In analysing this book, I don't just hope to point out cool facts, and techniques used, but rather encourage you to consider the motivations for authorial choices in a narrative.
