The more I consider the "Smoky gets Frostpaw sterilized against her will" thing, the more I dislike it even on a thematic level...
This book seems to be trying to put Frostpaw through an arc of learning to trust people. Riverstar magically appears in her dreams to send her to the Park Cats who are meant to teach her this lesson, but... starting and resolving that arc more than halfway through the book was sloppy, and a waste.
Instead of Smoky forcing medical treatment on her in spite of how she tells him point blank "please no," SHE should have called for the human.
A creature that the Clan cats have never trusted, that they have great reason to fear. Caught between dying with her pride like a good warrior and taking a risk on the kindness of an unknowable beast, in spite of all the betrayal, she chooses the chance.
Play it like this; Make it so the reason she becomes chosen by Riverstar at all is because he SEES this glimmer of potential within her, because of this very choice.
Instead of that bizarre opening chapter where he seems to have magically gifted her some kind of spiritual connection as a plot device, INSTEAD make it that they were sadly overseeing the end of her life. That this was her destiny, to die as a young, proud warrior apprentice. To trust no cat, as her mother told her.
But instead, she tricks the wording of the self-fulfilling prophecy Curlfeather told her. It said nothing about trusting a human!
THEN follow it up with teaching her how to trust cats again. But make the road down this character arc be something she truly initiated, instead of the weird bullshit they did with her being mad at Smoky for violating her consent while also exonerating him for "Doing The Right Thing :)"

Just Enough | Diluc (Genshin) x Traveler!Reader
✧ Summary: Between freeing Dvalin and pursuing the Geo Archon, you were constantly moving forward to find your brother with hardly a second to look back. You were in a rush to find your lost sibling, not realizing how your heart had stopped in Mondstadt. Visiting the city while waiting for things to die down after Rex Lapis’ death, you return to a… jealous Diluc?
Tumblr media
➳ Spoilers for the Dark Knight Hero quest and some of the manga background ➳ Notes: lots of fluff, slight angst and jealousy, character development, mutual pining at one point, a long one-shot that covers the (1.0) beginning of the Liyue story  ➳ Navigation
---xXxXxXxXxXx---
If he had only asked you to stay.
To say that these past few weeks were a blur would be a severe understatement. For months you were simply a lost wanderer, traveling from world to world for any sort of clue that could lead you to your brother.
And in just a matter of weeks you were suddenly Mondstadt’s hero.
From bringing peace to Dvalin’s heart to meeting Mondstadt’s infamous Dark-knight hero, you were familiarizing yourself with a people and a place for a world you knew you did not belong to. Learning of the history of the Seven Archons, the Gods’ of contracts or of freedoms, suddenly you were being thrust into it all at once.
You shared the burden of knowledge with a few of Mondstadt’s elite, the true God of Freedom walking in plain sight to the citizens of his nation. And with him, were the quick allies you found side-by-side when fighting a dragon.
It was all happening so suddenly and Lord Barbatos himself was giving you directions to the next country over, to continue on your journey in meeting all seven Archons to Liyue.
To this day, you could fondly recall your final celebration in Mondstadt.
“To think that despite his small stature he can drink so much.” Kaeya commented from his seat at the table, eyes slid in the direction of Venti at the bar next to you. You could see the impatient stare behind Diluc’s eyes, not at all happy that their God was indulging himself so freely.
“Honorary Knight, Mondstadt thanks you for your service.” Jean formally stated, for the nth time since Dvalin had been freed.
“I’m just glad I was at the right place at the right time.” You answered back, offering a placating smile in return.
“Humility doesn’t pay for dinner!” Paimon hmphed next to you.
“But aren’t we at a feast now?” You countered, gesturing to the table.
She sighed again before moving to get a taste of some of the honey roasted ham. “Fine, don’t blame me when we have to settle into that poor excuse of a tent!”
“Please, do not feel you are in any rush to leave.” Jean offered, “You are welcome lodgings at our Favonius Headquarters.”
“With the other Knights of Favonius?” Diluc asked, face completely blank if not for the small upward tilt of his left brow.
Kaeya flirted with you from across the room, uncaring of the other partygoers, “You could always stay with me.”
You laughed lightly and responded, “That’s a hard pass.”
The Cavalry Captain simply shrugged, offering it to you again if you changed your mind before grabbing another glass of wine and walking with Jean toward the busy table.
Barbara was trying different dishes and offering some to her older sister, spouting descriptions with medicinal purposes and flavors that compliment one another. Lisa was no better as Amber egged both of them on, completely sober as she continued to feast on the food laid before her. Other Knights of Favonius that you recognized were scattered about, enjoying the first truly peaceful night in the past few weeks.
“You are welcome to stay at the Dawn Winery, while you look for your brother.”
He relished in the sight of your smile.
“Thank you, Diluc.”
That was three months ago.
And since then you had been thrown into more of not your business but suddenly IS your business, business.
You remembered your last day before setting off from Mondstadt. The Knights of Favonius would surely call on you again and so you had quick goodbyes with Jean and Kaeya the day before. Venti was saved for last, a somewhat light-hearted and yet somber goodbye as he was the first and last person for you to see in Mondstadt.
But Diluc… How could you even start that conversation?
He was the lone wolf with a prickly reputation and an even worse sense of patience. You remembered the first time you even spoke to him, clipped words meant to get straight to the point. Not to mention that he was the first person to antagonize Kaeya, who was one of the few people you kinda trusted in the beginning.
It was not until the side adventures, the little quests you did one-on-one that you realized how much more there was to the edgelord that was Diluc.
Of course, he was still the strict type to focus solely on the mission.
But you realized more about why Diluc had come to be this way.
‘The uncrowned king of Mondstadt.’
As you worked together against the possible abyss invasion of Mondstadt, you poured over strategies and testing of his slime potion. And while slimes were not the hardest enemies to fight, he still complimented you on your form and appreciated your quick style with the sword.
You had a unique style, unlike Kaeya or anyone else of this world.
“Elegant, but deadly.”
You took that as a compliment.
And little by little Diluc opened up to you, cluing you into his personal history.
He and Kaeya were step-brothers, growing up together at the Dawn Winery. How he knew Jean since he was child and once served as her superior in the very organization he now despised. How he still has things to protect, to avenge. And while his description about what happened to his father was nothing more than a quiet stare, you were still grateful that he was entrusting you into his world.
You remembered Kaeya’s words as he discovered Diluc’s nighttime secret:
“I’m glad you’re working with an assistant.”
Kaeya’s tone may have come out scathing, but you knew better. Kaeya and Diluc used to be close, close enough to entrust their lives with one another. There was no doubt that Kaeya still cared about his brother, but with Diluc pushing everyone away….
Again, you were so appreciative that he chose to let you in.
When Kaeya finally left the bar, you turned to Diluc with a smile. “I think my work tonight earned me at least one glass of wine?”
That broke a small smile on his face, not the slight tilt on the sides or the wistful, far off look he got when he recalled something beyond your knowledge.
“Alright.” He waved over a nearby waitress, all of the customers tonight employees of the Dawn Winery. “Let’s take this up to the balcony, I’m going to close up anyway.”
“Oh?” Paimon’s squeaky tone somehow went up another octave in curiosity, “I just remembered I have to ask Venti something! Why don’t you two enjoy your date alone.”
She flew away before you could swat at her for her teasing words, blush apparent on your face. Diluc kept his flat face as he maneuvered things behind the bar, wiping at something before putting something in the below cabinet.
To your surprise, he handed you a bottle and two glasses, motioning with his head toward the second floor. Charles was among some of the ‘customers’ tonight, taking his usual spot behind the bar as Diluc stepped out.
You followed him wordlessly, walking up the steps and out the second-floor door closely behind him. He pulled out a wooden chair next to the table outside, you taking the seat underneath the stars as he plopped down alongside you.
“I thought the stars here in the city would get overcrowded by the lights.” You admitted, “But they’re beautiful even here.”
“Yeah, they are.” Diluc agreed, making you smile before turning to him.
“You’re not even looking at the stars.”
The pyro-user simply smirked, before looking up at the starry sky with you. You relished in the moment, glad to have some time alone with Diluc. Many had commented that the winery owner was so elusive, missing from the bar weeks at a time and unseen within the city walls. And yet here he was, enjoying the crisp air and a glass of wine with you.
“Thank you.” You started.
“Shouldn’t you be demanding thanks from me?” Diluc asked.
You laughed lightly, “Yeah, cause I’m sure that the abyss mage would have totally kicked your ass without me.”
Diluc had that slightly amused expression on, looking a bit more light-hearted as he turned to you with a slight tilt at the corner of his lips.
You continued, “I mean, thanks for entrusting me with your secret.”
Diluc paused, looking you straight in the eyes, probably to gauge your honesty. And he would concede that there was nothing else there. You wanted to be his friend, the first in a long time to have approached him without your own agenda regarding either the winery or his fortune.
In return, he poured you a glass of wine and replied, “You’ve long earned it.”
“Thank you, Diluc.” You took the glass and felt your heart flutter at the brush of his fingers. “I’m glad I got to know you.”
“I’m glad you’re in my life too.”
He shot you another one of his genuine, millisecond smiles before pouring some from the bottle for himself.
“Wine and not grape juice today?”
But he did not answer, instead eyes latching onto the rise of goosebumps on your arms. You could not help it against the crisp Mondstadt air, naturally feeling a chill at this time of night. Without a word, he shrugged off his outer coat, the thick black one he wore at almost all times of day, and rested it casually on your shoulders.
You muttered a small thanks as you snuggled into it. Diluc’s iconic dark coat, a complete contrast to yourself. While you wore a white dress with open sleeves and plenty of skin, Diluc wore black covering most of his body with the exception of his neck and face. Seeing it on your shoulders only reminded you of that fact.
“Don’t need you getting sick anytime soon.” Diluc stated plainly, as he returned to his seat.
You huddled into it more and replied, “Aw, Diluc cares.” Again, you were rewarded with another flat expression. “Or rather, if the events of today are to show anything, you’ve always cared. Just in your own, protective way.”
He slung an arm across the back of your seat, leaning closer before stating in a low voice. “Don’t forget that.”
Your eyes snapped to his, the both of you basically sharing the same breath in your close proximity. His scarlet eyes, usually a searing color when on the battlefield, looked surprisingly tender only inches from yours.
“You mean so much to me, Diluc.” You whispered back, afraid that anything above a whisper would punctuate this amorous atmosphere.
He slowly dragged his face alongside yours, stopping beside your ear and continuing in his low voice. “So do you.”
There was no stopping the shiver of anticipation that crawled up your spine.
You could feel the small smirk grow against your skin before he pulled off and grazed his lips against your forehead.
The expression on your face was practically begging him to kiss you. From the small lean in your side against his arm slung around you to the way your eyes slowly fluttered closed, it took all of his self-control to stop himself before he pulled you closer. He wanted nothing more than to grasp you by the back of your neck, relish in the way you melt against him. To kiss you now and tomorrow and maybe even the morning after at the winery.
Diluc had to remind himself that in less than a week you were going to be long gone.
He did not want to ruin this memory a week from now, asking what if and why. And so he settled on a simple kiss above your brow before leaning back in his seat, enjoying the moment he had with you tonight.
You were disappointed, but actually not surprised. It was a feat in itself that you were so close to Diluc in this short amount of time, it would do no good in pressuring him into anything else. But also, another more rational part of you, had to remind yourself that getting attached to the people of this world would only make it hurt more when you had to return home.
This was for the better.
But no matter how much rational thought Diluc used to push you away, you were sure that you had already fallen for him. From the small interactions with Diluc, you could barely recognize the moment that you were completely enamored with him. It was not during the first time you saw him fight or even the night he leant you his jacket. No, you feared it was much before then.
To think you had gotten attached to Diluc in such a short amount of time.
But then you had to say goodbye.
“Safe travels.” Diluc stated from behind the bar when he saw you enter on your last day.
You were not sure what you expected, a drawn out goodbye or a fore longed hug, but Diluc was still, well. He was still Diluc. And to see him re-erecting his walls before you left for your journey was a sad thought, but needed while the two of you were hundreds of miles away from one another.
But you would regret it if you didn’t say anything.
Instead you settled on, “I’ll miss you.”
The hopeful look in your eyes spelled out exactly what you wanted to hear back.
Diluc instead replied, “You fight good.”
“Oh. Um.” The hesitation was clear in your voice.
Was this really how you were going to leave things?
But with Diluc turning his attention back to the wine glass he was previously wiping, yes. It seemed that this was exactly how he wanted to leave it. Paimon scoffed, but said her own goodbyes before flying away.
“Goodbye, Diluc.”
Outside the tavern, you let your frown grow at that interaction. After everything you had been through together, Diluc complimented you on your fighting? Then said peace out?
“That was really lame.” Paimon commented aloud as she floated alongside you. You could not help but internally agree, but you had a whole journey ahead of you. At least the busyness of Liyue would keep you busy from dwelling on that conversation.
But as you said goodbye to Venti, the both of you stood in silence under the giant tree staring at the city. You thought about going back three times, to get a proper goodbye out of Diluc. But doing so would do neither of you any good, since it would only open more issues.
“No more questions about the other Archons?” Venti asked, voice surprisingly serious.
“Can’t think of anything.”
“None even of a certain… winery owner?” You could almost hear the smile in his voice.
You rolled your eyes and responded, “You’re such a little shit.”
“Hehe.”
You both continued to stare at the city, the marvels of its people and history within its high walls. To think Barbatos and Dvalin were finally free, because of your otherworldly intervention. Venti was truly thankful for you, and while he knew his words were on the more mischievous side, he knew that you understood.
Venti’s voice permeated the air. “Be safe in Liyue.”
You smiled back and offered him a tight hug, replying. “As always.”
To think that the same day that you stepped into Liyue, Rex Lapis was murdered before your very eyes. It was like the Gods actually hated you, having to rely on a Fatui to run away from the government officials hot on your trail.
Since then you had been working with Zhongli to prepare for a parting ceremony. From running around for certain types of Jade materials to singing to flowers, you were happy to take a second to yourself at all. You were afraid that trouncing around Liyue with a bounty on your head would do you no good and often stayed in the wild areas. Visits to the city were for necessities only, which often left you relying on the ever so truthful Childe or the mora-averse Zhongli.
More than three months after your initial departure to Liyue, you stepped back into the walls of Mondstadt’s bustling city, a commission nearby and you figured you were safe simply due to your reputation under the Knights of Favonius.
Venti was the last face you saw and the first face that greeted you, beckoning to join him for lunch. With your final commission of the day finished, you joined him with a smile and ordered some honey roasted ham.
You recounted some of the news to Venti, meeting many of the adeptus and how out of touch they seemed with the region. You described Zhongli from the funeral parlor who always felt like he knew more and played a higher part in Liyue (and you inwardly noted how Venti’s eyes lit up in recognition at the name). And also, Childe the Fatui Harbinger that had you on edge.
“You’re hanging out with a harbinger?” Venti asked.
“Uh oh.” Paimon reacted.
“Well.” You remembered your last encounter with Signora. “It’s complicated.”
Venti paused before sighing, “Is he cute?”
“That’s not why!” You huffed back instantly.
“So he is cute!”
“And rich!” Paimon added, joining in on the teasing.
“Not the issue here.” You stated, “He saved me from the Millelith and helped me get into contact with the adepti.”
Venti’s mischievous smile from the earlier teasing turned blank, as if he was fully ingesting your words. “... Why would he do that?”
“Huh?”
But Venti quickly recovered, waving away the question and urging you to move past it. “Just thinking out loud, continue. What happened after?”
And so you recalled everything from then. How the soldiers followed you all the way up the mountain and how you had to defend yourself from people that were supposed to be on the same side as you.
How there was someone out there with the strength to take down a God.
Venti laughed at you for like, twenty minutes.
After his laughter subsided, he held a hand over his stomach and asked. “They think you killed Rex Lapis?”
He took another look at your pouting face and laughed again.
It only made you scowl further. “I’m glad you think my supposed war crimes are so funny.”
“I think I’m missing the punchline again.” Paimon added.
“Hehe. You’ll be fine.” Venti shot back his mischievous smile, “Besides, I’m sure you’re looking forward to laying low here with a certain… someone here.”
You paused and put your fork back down, “What are you trying to say?”
“Well, the Dawn Winery is throwing a festival tonight.” Venti stated clearly, “Isn’t that why you’re here?”
“Wait, really?”
The mischievous light was back in Venti’s eyes, “I’m sure the winds of fate have brought you here purely on coincidence.”
You sighed and turned to him fully. “You trying to fight, old man?”
“Hehe.” His signature giggle, one you found almost endearing, was undoubtedly mocking you. “We should go together later.”
And true to his word, somehow you found yourself with the Anemo Archon heading over to the bar. To think that it was Venti who introduced you here and now he was bringing you along again.
That is, if you even had a chance to make it inside at this rate.
The area was packed to the brim, all the seats outside in front and on the side of the building already taken. There was a line out the door, many hopeful young women with gleaming eyes trying to get a one-on-one conversation with the current barkeep and owner.
You peered into the open door and saw Diluc and Charles behind the bar, the red-head adorned with his usual flat-expression. It was the first time in months since you had seen him, but he looked exactly as the day you had left. Still the same colored wardrobe and prickly atmosphere, Diluc was still, Diluc.
What did not help was the ever growing line of flirty men and women trying to vye for his attention.
It only seemed to further nail the pit in your stomach.
Was this… jealousy?
You didn’t dwell on the thought for long.
Instead, you considered for a single-second if you should just turn tail now, but Venti must have seen your hesitation and grabbed you by the arm to walk inside. Dozens of eyes followed you on the way in, many people recognizing you as the young hero of Mondstadt and honorary knight of Favonius.
The crowd was surprisingly less inside, but knowing Diluc he probably would have tried to corral everyone to the outdoor areas. Venti continued to lead you towards a table in the back and you saw a familiar red-bowed Outrider.
“I didn’t even know you were going to be here today!” She greeted you excitedly.
“Tone-Deaf Bard here convinced us to stay the night.” Paimon replied.
“Oh?” Her voice lifted in a tone that only spelled trouble, “No matter, I’m glad to see you in one piece.”
“I’m assuming you’ve heard.”
Amber stretched in her seat and lowered her voice, smile turning to a smirk. “Well, I won’t confirm anything. But my suspicions are that the blonde person the Knights were pursuing for stealing the Holy Lyre may be the same blonde person running from the Millelith.”
“What a crazy theory.” Paimon responded as she cleared her throat.
“At least it’s just a theory, right?” Amber replied. “Anyway, we’ll hold the seats. Do you mind going up to the bar to order?”
Paimon chimed up as she floated down into the wooden seat, “Yeah, you should go.”
You barely had a second to object before Venti agreed and was motioning for you to go back to the bar. If not for their eager stares at you, you would have rolled your eyes at how obvious they were being.
“Fine, fine. I’m going.” You stated aloud, getting up from the seat you inhabited for at most ten minutes.
Turning towards the bar, you took in a deep breath to collect your thoughts. To think you fought the Wolf of the North and Oceanid with more courage - it was just Diluc.
“Long time no see.” You greeted, trying to sound extremely casual. “Bottle of wine for one of your favorite people?”
Diluc looked at you for a quick second, then back down to the bar, then rapidly snapping back up to you in surprise. “Hey. Of course.”
Unsure what to say, you responded back with a simple, “Thank you.”
“Didn’t know you’d be in town today.”
“It was all coincidence. Venti told me about your event tonight.” You mentioned, motioning behind you to the table where the three of them were waiting. Amber waggled her eyebrows in response and you turned back to Diluc in embarrassment.
But he was looking at you the entire time. “For a war criminal, you look well.”
“Ugh, not you too.”
“Ironic how you delinquents always return here while hiding it out.” Diluc did not answer, instead openly teasing you.
Honestly, it was a little ironic that you and Venti ran here after stealing the Holy Lyre, just to end up back here while the Millelith were on the hunt for you.
Instead you replied, “They didn’t release any names.”
“Right, it’s probably some other sword-wielding blonde with white clothes and access to the Anemo vision.”
“Obviously.”
To think you were so involved in Teyvat's politics. An otherworldly being with no prior connections to the people or nations was somehow involved with the highest ranking people of every country you’ve stumbled into.
Everyone from the Dvalin team knew about your primary objectives: to find your brother and regain your full power through the seven Archons. And when news of Rex Lapis’ death reached Mondstadt, Diluc could almost physically feel the dread in his heart that something had happened to you. And when the Millelith released their man-hunt of your exact profile, there was no doubt that you were involved.
To see you standing before him, in association with an Archon of all people, it was like a breath of fresh air on his heart. You were here in the tavern, fine and even enjoying the night.
A large part of him wanted to ask about your journey, what was it that had you on the run again? But with the growing line out the door, he knew he barely had time to keep this conversation going.
So instead, Diluc grabbed glasses and a bottle of wine from beneath the bar and asked, “Spare a few minutes for me later?”
You nodded quietly, handing him the necessary Mora before returning back to the table.
Amber did not pull her punches, “So, you guys dating yet?”
You almost dropped the bottle, but Venti was quick even through his laughter.
“Yeah and I’m the Archon of Snezhnaya.” Paimon replied sarcastically.
“Shut up.” You pouted, “It was just nice to see each other after all this time.”
“Oh so you had a good conversation? Did he ask you to stay after? Are you going to stay the night? Did he offer for you to stay at the Dawn Winery?” Amber spit out question after question, not a sense of patience or tact in her words.
Venti was still laughing like the Archon of assholes he was.
While they prodded through their multiple questions, you tried to wave them away to another conversation topic. If Amber was prodding you like this, you could only imagine that the other Knights, such as Kaeya and Jean, were also aware of your strange relationship.
Amber tried to push it a bit more, but you were able to spin the conversation to ask what the others were up to. It was interesting to hear about the little tasks in Mondstadt, small commissions that the Knights take care of in the city as well as guarding the areas further out into the country.
And while you hated to drift off with them sitting right in front of you, your mind often wandered toward the red-head behind the bar. Diluc had personally asked you to stay back later, undoubtedly to speak to you about something one-on-one. Would it be cowardly if you left early? Would the others notice if you tried to make a break for it at one point?
Again, it seemed as if Venti was capable of reading your mind, lightly calling you to attention and putting a casual hand on the back of your chair.
He was not letting you get away from this.
Venti even shifted the conversation to you, asking about Liyue and the local adventures you had while in the city. Unable to ignore the direct questions, you told them about the stories of the people you met so far and the strange events you seemed to be dragged into.
“Wait, start over.” Amber cut into your most recent story about a ship just outside of the Liyue city. ”You just glided down onto the Pearl Galley?”
You paused then replied, “Well. I mean the ship was just sitting there outside the harbor and I was curious.”
“And so you boarded a luxury ship without an invitation?”
“Yeah, so?” Paimon answered with a question, genuinely confused.
“And yet you wonder how you keep getting involved in all these crazy schemes.” Amber answered ambiguously.
“Well, eventually I did get an invitation.”
“But after you were already on the ship.” Amber pointed out. “How did you even glide that far out?”
“I climbed to the top of the nearby mountain and then just dropped down.”
“Wow.”
“Is it really a surprise?” Venti commented, “She doesn’t even follow the proper stairs here in the city. Don’t think we don’t see you climbing over every wall here in Mondstadt.”
“You’re such a weirdo.” Amber sighed with a smile, “You’re lucky we love you so much.”
You continued on with your stories, some in the city and others within hidden temples deep in the wilderness, puzzles and timed traps masking treasures you sought to find. Amber and Venti listened on in rapt attention, asking questions here and there and even teasing you about your constant climbing.
You hadn’t even noticed how the bar patrons were starting to slowly thin out.
The night with Venti and Amber was such a refreshing feeling compared to the nights you spent staring up silently at the night sky, only Paimon at your side. It was nice to hear and speak to other people, to not be on the run and always looking over your shoulder.
Feeling a light tap on the side, you turned to see Diluc standing at attention.
“Hey.” He greeted you again.
“We were just on our way out!” Amber exclaimed, standing instantly with Venti not far behind her. “Mondstadt’s star Outrider has to be up bright and early tomorrow.”
“Which is why you’re both leaving…?” You asked.
“It’s my duty to ensure the safety of the city and we said we were going to discuss something.” Venti answered ambiguously.
You crossed your arms, “Discuss what?”
“The— !” Amber paused, “The thing. You know, with the stuff at the Seven Winds Temple.”
“Right! Let’s get going.” Venti turned to Paimon at the last second, “I think this will interest you.”
Paimon winked at you before turning to Diluc, ”Right, the stuff!”
Diluc motioned you to follow him and so, once again, you found yourself following behind the Pyro-user out the second-floor balcony. However, instead of sitting at the table, you learned against the railing while Diluc stood to the side.
“Wasn't expecting you to be gone for so long.” Diluc started with a flat voice.
You turned to him with a slight grimace. “I’m sorry, I ended up getting caught in something important back in Liyue.”
More important than him.
The implication was quiet in the back of Diluc’s mind.
But that would always be the case. To think that the first person in years to open up his shell was someone who could only be in his life temporarily. You intrigued him to the high heavens - the strange mix of both pride and humility as you fought and carried yourself. You were strong, but merciful. Kind, but a purveyor of your own brand of justice.
It had been a while since he met someone with such genuine reservations as you.
But your time together was already ticking down, from your time in Mondstadt to your time in his world. You were looking for your brother and who knew if he was even in Tyvat currently? It would be unfair to be bitter towards you. And so he resolved long ago to simply cherish the moments you had together.
So instead of snapping back, Diluc teased you.
“I’m sure. I’ve heard of your extensive… wanted days.”
You sighed aloud, “How did the news travel here so fast?”
Diluc smirked, “First Barbatos and now Rex Lapis? What kind of luck do you have?”
“The worst kind.”
Of course, there was something he wanted to learn more about. After he had caught wind from Katheryn in Liyue, Diluc still wanted to be informed about your current situation. To think that you were in close association with one of the high Fatui Harbingers after Signora personally attacked you, it was almost like you were openly inviting trouble.
It also did not help that many of the gossip mills included how attractive this particular Fatui was.
He goes by the alias of ‘Childe.’ Young, but deadly!
A Fatui, but doesn’t wear his mask - for good reason! He’s quite the looker.
I wouldn’t mind if he impaled me somewhere. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Needless to say, his sources did not alleviate his worries.
Of all people? A Fatui was one of your close associates in Liyue? A party of him wanted to snarl, the thought a worse downgrade from the Knights of Favonius. At least he knew Kaeya would do you no harm; he doubted the same could be said about Childe.
Archons, why did he care so much?
Diluc told himself multiple times that your abrupt parting was necessary to keep himself from getting too attached to you. But it hardly mattered when he was worrying this much anyway in spite of that.
Fuck, why did he just let you walk away like that?
Diluc was not going to make the same mistake.
He turned to you and asked, “Like the Fatui kind?”
You sighed, “Believe me, I don’t like it either.”
“And yet somehow here we are.”
“It’s complicated, okay?”
“When is it not with you?” Diluc asked, more hypothetically. And while from anyone else, it may have felt offensive, you could tell from his tone that it was just a tired sigh.
“Tell me about your journey.” He continued.
“What?” You answered with a question, genuinely surprised. “It’s a long story, not all that interesting.”
Diluc took a step forward, taking the spot next to you against the rail as your shoulders touched. “I want to hear it from you.”
You couldn’t help but smile, “Okay.”
And so you recounted your journey to find the Geo Archon, how the adepti set up strange puzzles and at some point you swore you were pulled into a teacup that somehow contained a full domain.
There were also other missions on the side, other things you would do to collect Mora or materials if you were going to get any stronger. Some of them made sense — doing deliveries, clearing abyss camps, and other mercenary like duties. Other instances, not so much.
“Only you would accept a commission from a ghost.” Diluc teased as you recounted the treasure in the mines.
“In my defense, I didn’t think he was a ghost at first.”
“Right. Nothing suspicious at all about a transparent old man in the middle of an abandoned village.”
“I was reading the poster he was showing!”
“And when did you realize he was a ghost?”
“... After I met three other ghosts.”
Diluc cracked a smile at that, only making you pout more. You had adjusted your postures overtime, standing against with rails to your backs as you faced the tavern.
“He paid me good Mora!”
“How…?” Diluc thought about it before waving it off, “Forget it. I don’t want to know.”
You laughed back before you saw the lights inside the tavern switch off, complete darkness in the windows as the remaining employees packed up and went home.
“Oh wow, I hadn’t even realized how long we were out here.” You admitted, “I’m sorry I took up so much of your time.”
“Don’t apologize. I wanted to spend this time with you.”
“Still, it’s already late.”
“You’re right. Where were you and Paimon going to spend the night?”
“Honestly, I don’t know.” You admitted, “Venti convinced us to stay, but I don’t even know where he is.”
Diluc pushed off the railing to stand facing you, “You could stay the night at the winery. We can retrieve Paimon tomorrow.”
What game was he playing? Your disappointing departure with Diluc cutting you off and now he was asking for your time and space back into his life? You hated that he pushed you away just to pull you back in at his convenience. And while you understood his personality tended to keep people at a distance, you had your own limits as to what you could withstand.
“... Diluc, what are you doing?”
“You’ll have to be more clear.”
You closed your eyes, trying to gather your thoughts and hamper down on your rising temper. “Come on, why are you being so nice to me?”
He stared at you expectedly, blank eyes urging you to continue.
It only served to make you more angry.
“Diluc, when I left you hardly blinked. And now that I’m here, after months of us not talking, you want me to spend the night?”
“I told you before how much you meant to Mondstadt.”
To Mondstadt? Not even to himself personally?
You decided it was better to confront him cleanly asking, “Why didn’t you kiss me that night we were drinking here?”
Diluc paused, not a single hint of surprise on his face as you addressed the situation head-on. “Why should I have?”
“Don’t act like you didn’t feel it. There was something between us.” You scoffed.
He noticed your use of past tense.
“Does it honestly matter? You would’ve left anyway, I saved us both the trouble.”
You visibly recoiled in response. “Is that what this is about? I have to go to Liyue and the other counties, Diluc. I have to find my brother.”
“I know that.” Diluc cut in, before you got the wrong idea. “You don’t think I’m acutely aware of that fact? The fact that this is my home and not yours. That one day you’ll find your brother and I’ll never see you again?”
“Wait.”
“Believe me, I know better than anyone that you’re off to find your brother. And I’ll help you in any way that I can.” Diluc continued, not heeding your confused attempts to stop him. “But let’s not pretend like I was anything more than a stepping stone in your journey.”
“That’s not true!”
“Oh?” Diluc’s tone was almost challenging,  “It’s not? So once the dust is settled, if I asked you to stay here with me, would I be enough?”
You stuttered over your words, “I --”
“I don’t want to hear your excuse because we both know the answer.” He cut you off, “I was trying to save myself from that before it happened.”
“Will you let me speak, you idiot!?” Your voice cut through the silent evening air.
Diluc paused, standing a good ten feet away from you and looking angrier than you’d ever seen. But he did, thankfully, stop talking.
“Is it crazy to think that I feel the same way about you?”
“What?”
“Diluc, I’m just me!” You answered, “I have nothing to my name but an objective to find my brother — if he’s even alive at this point. I need to try and I need to continue on this path…”
He crossed his arms, but stayed quiet as he listened.
“But just because I have so much ahead of me, that doesn’t I don’t care about where I’ve already seen.” You took a few steps toward Diluc as you spoke, “You mean so much to me and I wouldn’t ever want to throw that away.”
“You won’t have a choice if you have to leave this world.”
“If!” You pointed out, “Diluc you’re so worried about the future, about me walking away from you forever, but it doesn’t have to be this way.”
“And suddenly there’s an alternative?”
“There’s always been one, you idiot! You just never bothered to actually talk to me.” You put your hands on his chest, the light material of his dark clothes underneath your palms. “I would’ve tried. If you asked me to make this work, to come back to you at the winery back then, I would’ve done it.”
Diluc closed his eyes, taking in your words as his hands snaked down to your wrists.
“Don’t give me empty promises.”
“I mean it!” You defended, “You aren’t just another person, Diluc. I—“
He opened his eyes then, reflecting back to you as hopeful and curious. “You…?”
“I care about you more than you know.” You settled on, still unsure about the extent of your feelings. “Why are you giving up on us before even starting?”
You stared right back at Diluc, his silence paramount to the inner turmoil you were sure he was going through. From his late father to the betrayal from the Knights, there were plenty of reasons why Diluc was so hesitant to connect with other people.
But you’d be damned if you didn’t try.
Your hands felt heavy against his chest. Despite your small demeanor and even smaller palms, the weight of your hands seemed to play seesaw between his heart and mind. He had logical reasons to keep you at a distance, but here you were trying to carve your way through back to him.
It had been a long time since he cared about anyone like this. And Diluc could not even recall the last time he wanted to sorely kiss someone at all. But how could he not want to now? You stared up at him, eyes blazing with determination as you tried to convey your feelings.
“You mean so much to me.” Diluc stated after a few silent minutes, “Let’s make this work.”
The smile you shot him was wide and radiant, a private blessing that only he was gifted tonight. He wrapped his arms around your waist, eager to feel more of you — to envelop you in his arms and keep you within them tonight.
One hand strayed upward, carding itself in your hair and pulling you closer until both your eyes fluttered closed. The soft skin of your lips slotted against his, an endearing frenzy to give one another tender pecks. You could not help the happy mewl that escaped your lips as Diluc licked against the crease of your skin.
Moaning aloud to his tender touch, Diluc was eager to explore every inch of your wet cavern. There was no battle of tongues, simply moving in tandem as Diluc dominated the kiss. You tried to maneuver to give him more access, but with your height difference it was the best you could do.
Diluc lifted one of your legs, wrapping it around his waist and lightly tapping the other to do the same. Eyes clouded with lust, you did as instructed and quickly felt the soft thump behind you, the wall of the tavern helping hold you upright.
You fell more and more into the passionate lip lock, pushing to match his intensity as Diluc connected you in one of the most intimate ways possible. One hand was still in your hair while the other continued its scandalized trail downward.
You prayed to Barbatos that nobody heard you outside the tavern.
The both of you would later attribute this impassioned frenzy due to the prolonged time apart and mutual pining (culminating in a mistake outside on the balcony, twice inside the bar, and the rest of the night back at the winery).
For the first time, you enjoyed the morning sun streaming in through the windows, a lazy arm strung across your waist as you snuggled in the chest of the man you were growing to love.
Diluc woke long before you, hand threading through your hair silently as he resolved to remember this moment. You kissed at the naked skin of his chest twice before nuzzling him, feeling the light arm pull you closer.
“Good morning.” You started, voice muffled against his skin.
But you would have never expected Diluc to be so affectionate.
He kissed the top of your head, murmuring in a low tone. “Good morning, my love.”
Nothing about your relationship was perfect. You still fought and cried like every other couple. But you both knew that what you had was real, willing to fight for it no matter the obstacles that came with the future.
It did not matter that Tyvat was not your home.
Wherever Diluc was, that was where you’d return.
---xXxXxXxXxXx---
Extra: “What if they end up fighting?” Amber asked the other two as they walked down a side-street of the city.
“Then we’ll find out the moment it breaks out. Trust me.” Paimon replied. After all, your Anemo power would only serve to make any fire larger.
“They’ve both been in that pining puppy phase for so long, I doubt it’ll come down to that.” Venti added.
“500 Mora says they’ll be dating by the end of this week.” Amber bet.
“1,000 that they’ll be together by tonight!” Paimon countered.
“10,000 that they’ll be joined in every way by tonight.” Venti added, the mischievous tone not missed by either woman.
“You tone-deaf bard!” Paimon exclaimed as she slapped her hands over her red cheeks. “The traveler is more dignified than that!”
Amber had a hand on her chin, “Dating? Probably. But more than that…?”
Venti held out a hand to both, vying for both to shake one and accept the bet.
Nothing, but a couple of suckers.
Amber grumbled once when she heard the news, but otherwise excitedly congratulated you two on finally accepting your feelings. Paimon’s whine could probably be heard in a fifteen mile radius and Venti’s proud smile didn’t help either — accepting the easiest twenty thousand Mora he ever made.
And, just to gode the tiny guide a little more, Venti turned to Paimon in the middle of her complaining rant.
“Hehe.”
---xXxXxXxXxXx---
A/N:
The festival idea comes from Diluc’s story 1: “The winery holds festivities from time to time. These events are routinely attended by enthusiastic fathers, eager to introduce their wonderful daughters to the young and single winery master.”

sister’s approval ~ machine gun kelly
word count: 1415
request?: yes!
“Machine gun Kelly x female reader. The reader is Kells younger sister who’s a singer and who’s really close to kells. When kells and Megan start dating people start saying how Megan is trying to push her out of kells life, trying to make kells forget about his sister even though Megan and kells sister immediately became best friends when kells introduced them. She finally has enough of people saying stuff about Megan and she posts on social media saying that she’s tired of people saying stuff that isn’t true and that her and Megan are best friends and she doesn’t hate Megan and that she’s really happy that her brother found someone as amazing as Megan. Please and thank you”

She ran right past her brother and immediately tackled his girlfriend instead. Megan chuckled and hugged (Y/N) back as Colson watched with amusement.
“Good to see you too, sis,” he said.
“Yeah, yeah, you’re cool I guess,” (Y/N) said, waving Colson’s comment away. “We both know I’m here for Megan.”
“Weird, I thought you were here to record a song with me.”
“That’s like the side quest, the main mission is Megan.”
Colson rolled his eyes. (Y/N) made her way to his home studio, basically making herself at home in his house.
Despite both of them being in the music business for over 10 years, neither of the Baker siblings had ever done a song together. With the production of his next album, Colson insisted that (Y/N) made a feature on the album. She said yes on the condition that they both kept it an absolute secret until it was released to which Colson agreed.
(Y/N) threw herself down onto the couch in Colson’s home studio and pulled her songwriting notebook from her bag. “I have a few different verses written just because when I started writing I couldn’t stop. You choose one that sounds best with the rest of the song.”
“I’m sure all of them would work.
“Yeah but we can’t do a six verse song, that’s just too long. Pick one and I’ll use the others for a different song.”
Colson took the notebook and read through the verses. (Y/N) took her phone to look through social media while he read them. Megan was sat next to her, sending each other 8 Ball games back and forth between social media sessions.
After scrolling through Instagram for a while, (Y/N) switched to Twitter to find her own name trending. Confused, she clicked it to find an article at the top of the trend. The title read: “MGK blows off sister again! The rapper stands up (Y/N) for Megan Fox yet again”, accompanied by a picture of (Y/N) sat alone outside of a restaurant.
She didn’t have to read the rest of the article to know it was bullshit. The picture was of (Y/N) waiting on a friend outside the restaurant, not Colson, and the headline was so false that (Y/N)’s hands started to shake.
“(Y/N)? You good?”
Colson’s voice brought (Y/N) out of her enraged trance. She looked up to see him and Megan looking at her, expectantly.
“Yeah, I’m good,” she responded. However, another brief glance at her phone brought her anger back. “Actually, no, I’m not. I’ll be right back.”
She got up and walked out of the studio. She went to the living room, far enough away that she knew they wouldn’t be able to hear her as she filmed her video.
The press had been trying to pin (Y/B) and Megan against one another since she and Colson started dating. (Y/N) and Colson had always been close, but once Colson started dating Megan, the paparazzi started taking pictures of just the two of them or just (Y/N), totally ignoring the fact that (Y/N) was constantly posting pictures and tweets about Megan, and that all three of them spent time together often.
(Y/N) had had enough of the lies and the clickbait just to make Megan and Colson look like bad people. She was about to set the record straight, whether people wanted to hear it and believe it or not.
She switched her phone to Instagram again and went to her story. She held her phone up so that she was framed perfectly in the shot and held down on the button to begin recording.
“Hey everyone! I just wanted to address something really quick,” she started. She held the phone out so that the camera would pick up the background. “You see this behind me? This living room I’m in? This is Colson’s living room, because I am in Colson’s house. I am here spending time with him and with Megan, as I do almost every day. I am bringing this up because I just saw yet another article trying to make it out as if Colson has stopped spending time with me due to Megan. These articles are nothing but clickbait and lies to try and grab reader’s attention, especially the attention of my fans.
“Colson and I have not had any sort of falling out. There are no ill wishes from me towards Megan, and vice versa. In fact, Megan is my best friend. I like her more than I like Colson. And no, Colson has not stood me up or dumped me for Megan. Does he like to have his alone time with her? Of course! All couples do! But we still spend time together and we still talk to one another. There’s no bad blood between any of us. To the tabloids that have been spewing this bullshit for nearly a year now, I’d like for you all to kindly and politely shut the fuck up and move on. If I keep seeing this slander about my family, I will not hesitate to take legal action. To any of my fans who actually believe this and are sending hateful messages to Colson and Megan, I also beg you to stop. They are my family, and by hurting them you are hurting me. Whether you choose to believe this video or not is totally up to you, but this is the truth. All three of us, we’re a family. So fuck off of my family.”
(Y/N)’s hands were still shaking as she pressed “post”. She watched the videos load one by one before they were all posted to her story. The moment they went up, the views came flooding in, as did the positive messages. Many of her fans sent her private messages in response to the story, telling her they were sorry that she and Colson had to deal with that and assuring her that the real fans knew there was no ill intentions between the three of them.
Satisfied that she had finally gotten that off her chest, (Y/N) went to Colson’s kitchen and poured herself a glass of water before going back to the home studio. As she walked through the door, both Colson and Megan’s heads turned to look at her.
“Did you guys want water, too?” she asked, trying to lighten the mood.
“You could’ve told us you were going to film that video,” Colson said. “We could’ve addressed the rumors, too.”
(Y/N) sighed and took her spot on the couch again. “I know that, but I felt like it had to be me addressing it. I was the one being made out to be a victim. If you guys said anything before I did, everyone would just think you’re trying to cover your own asses. You can make statements if you want, but I felt like I had to be the first one to speak up about this.”
“She’s right,” Megan agreed. “If we came out about it first it would just be fuel to the tabloid’s fire. Although, I don’t think we should have to make any sort of statement about it. The fact that anyone believes that shit makes no sense to me.”
“People like to demonize celebrities they don’t like,” (Y/N) responded. “Whether it’s true or not. Chances are that video will be taken out of context to fit their agenda, but whatever. I said my piece, I’m moving on.” She nodded to her notebook in Colson’s hand. “Did you choose a verse?”
Colson looked down at the notebook before passing it back to (Y/N). “They’re all really good, so I thought maybe, instead of one single, we do an entire album together.”
(Y/N)’s eyes widened. “Are you serious? Like you actually wanna do that?”
Colson nodded. “Yeah! I think it’ll be a fun surprise to both of our fanbases, and it’ll definitely make up for the last ten years where we haven’t worked together.”
(Y/N) was basically bouncing with excitement. “Oh my God, this album is gonna be so fucking awesome! We should give it a really cheesy name, like Baker’s Dozen.”
“No,” Colson said.
“Yes!” Megan retorted.
“Two against one, it’s being called Baker’s Dozen,” (Y/N) decided. She and Megan high fived while Colson buried his head in his hands and let out a groan.

Peculiar (Newsies Fanfiction) - Chapter 1
Description: Jack Kelly is having a strange encounter on the street.
words: 1696
A/N: This AU was kinda inspired by Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, so it's basically that some of the Newsies, the Peculiars, have powers and all the Manhattan Newsies live with Medda in the Theatre. Then, there are also those who chase after Peculiars, the Collectors. I'm not quite sure where I want to go with this story bc initially, I only wanted to practice my 'English skills' (she said, sitting in front of her computer like: 'How to English?') and suddenly I had a whole AU in my head. So if you wish for certain scenes or something, you can put your wishes in the comments and I might comply. One thing I'm certain of, however, is my choice of main pairings: Javid and Sprace. But I might include other pairings as well.
I hope you enjoy.
Sincerely, me
Lélodie
-----
The sky was still being shadowed by dark clouds, even though the rain had stopped approximately three hours ago. Puddles decorated the streets which were filled with busy people, running back and forth while being indifferent to the world around them. And right among these apathetic businessmen, there was a vivid, excited boy, no older than seventeen – Jack Kelly.
The newspapers in his hand felt kind of damp to him but that didn't keep him from advertising news after news, praising the papers as if they were the most precious things on earth.
“Extra! Extra!” Jack cried, followed by made-up headlines nobody bothered to check when buying the paper. It was already late in the evening and most of the papers were sold by now. A little more time passed and eventually, there was only one paper left.
Jack, who did not seem to be quite satisfied with his day's pay, looked around the street until he suddenly caught sight of a well-dressed man who was heading towards his carriage. 'Well, that looks promising,' Jack thought, straightening his collar and making his way over to the man.
“Extra! Extra, good man! A whole factory going up in flames and -”, he began but the man interrupted him with a dismissive gesture of his hand.
“Move, boy. I do not have time for this nonsense.”
“Surely, you're a very important fella, dear sir, but if ya'd just buy a pape -”
The man looked at him in disgust. “I have no intention on doing business with a dirty little boy from the street.” With these words, he entered his carriage, leaving Jack standing like a fool on the street.
“Whatever ya say, good fella, but I's by no means little, nor dirty! And I'd never do business with such an arrogant sucker either!” Jack didn't know why the words of the man had bothered him this much but it was probably because he was tired, exhausted and just wanted to return to the theatre to get a good night's sleep. He was going to continue his quest to sell the last paper when suddenly the carriage was set in motion, purposefully driving through a puddle on the ground so that a bunch of muddy water was being splashed all over him.
“Alright, you sucker, ya totally owe me a new shirt, this one's brand new!” He called after the disappearing carriage. “There goes a four month's pay,” he eventually mumbled, eyeing his body. The dirt felt familiar yet unpleasant on his skin. He hesitated. Next thing he knew, he was making his way towards the nearest dark alley he could find.
A considering look down the alley. Then, he let his powers do the work. A stream of clear water crawled along his arms, his neck, his face and was softly cleaning his body. Jack smiled as he navigated the cool stream, letting it embrace him like a safe blanket or the arms of a person that felt like home. For a short moment, he closed his eyes. Forgetting the world around him that only wanted to harm him and pushed him from one danger towards the next. Forgetting that he had to work under inhuman conditions, day after day. Forgetting everything. And for a short moment, he imagined being in Santa Fe, where everything would be okay.
Then, there came the self-satisfied laughter.
Startled, Jack opened his eyes and found himself faced with a big, bulky guy with crooked teeth and large ears. “Well, well, look what we have here. A Peculiar and a very precious one at that.” The guy held a club in his hands that he'd probably stolen from one of the policemen at some point. The self-satisfied laughter turned into a sinister smirk.
Abruptly, Jack stopped the flowing water and looked around him, searching for an escape route. But he was stuck in a cul-de-sac and the way back to the main street was blocked by Bulky Guy. “Yeah, well, what's it to you, man? You's gonna mind ya own business?” Trying to hide the nervousness that was burning him up from within, Jack settled for a daring grin.
“Oh, so you're a bigmouth, too, huh? This is gonna be so much fun.”
Jack saw the first blow coming. He lifted his arm to block it and stretched out his leg to kick Bulky Guy in the knee. The rest of the fight was kind of a blur to him. Every time it occurred to him that the opportunity to flee had come – Bulky Guy definitely had the upper hand -, his opponent seemed to be reading his mind and was once again blocking his path. Jack wasn't a fool. He knew that he was too tired to keep on for much longer and a little voice in his head was constantly persuading him into using his powers. But he did not dare.
Too clear was the memory of the last time he has used his powers against an actual person. The feeling of flooding another's lungs, more and more and more and more until they were drowning from within. Jack groaned. What in the world did he have to do to just be able to forget the Incident?
“Ready to give up yet, boy?” Bulky Guy asked, clearly enjoying himself.
“You wish,” Jack replied, ducking under yet another blow. His hands were sweaty, his ribs felt broken and the poor boy's head was spinning.
Then, a different voice pierced though the alley. “You there! Leave the boy in peace and get away from here as fast as you can.” Jack was aware of the fact that the newcomer was talking to Bulky Guy but his voice, this delicate, melodic voice was so inviting that his urge to escape from this alley was getting stronger as well.
Jack looked up, wanting to know how Bulky Guy would react, partly expecting him to just turn around and knock out the news guy. To his surprise, Bulky Guy nearly bowed down before the owner of the mystical voice, as if he wanted to apologize for being such a dick, and retreated without another word. Completely bewildered, Jack squinted at his saviour for the first time.
He was only an ordinary boy, as far as he could see. Black hair, worry in his eyes and overall a quite cute appearance. He seemed to be a bit perplexed as well because he solely stood there, at the entrance of the alley, his hands balled into fists, his gaze fixed on Jack.
Jack, who now had found his own voice again. “I guess a 'Thank You' might be appropriate in this situation. Free paper?” He nearly had forgotten the now not only damp but also slightly crumpled newspaper he had stuffed safely into his pocket at the beginning of the fight. He also didn't really care any more. He was too relieved. So he held the paper out to the guy who spared it not even a single glance. Jack was slightly offended.
“Oh my God,” the guy said, his voice softer and more down-to-earth than before. A friendly tone, yet no less beautiful. “I'm going to be in so much trouble now. What if he comes back and what if somebody tells Mama and Papa and why would I even – Oh no, and he is a stranger as well, why did I have to help a complete -”
“In my defence, I am quite a catch and I don't mind playin' damsel in distress, as long as a guy like you's gonna be my knight in shining armour,” Jack interrupted him, slowly getting bored because the guy was talking non-stop to himself instead of reacting to Jack's presence.
Cute Guy looked at him like he was crazy. “What are you talking about? I barely even did anything, to be honest, I was just passing by and saw how this guy attacked you and couldn't keep on walking as if nothing was going on. But it's not exactly my fault the guy went away, he was probably afraid I'd call the cops on him,” and there he was, rambling again.
“Sorry ta interrupt ya, pal, but we both know that he'd have knocked ya out in seconds. And for the record, we also both knows that what ya did there wasn't quite normal.” At least, that was Jack's assumption. It might have been a really big coincidence but his intuition told him that the boy in front of him might be a Peculiar as well. With a grand gesture, he took the guy's hand and put his last paper in it. “Like I said, thank ya. It's nice that our kind looks out for each other. Ya know that there's also others with powers, don't ya? You's not alone in this -”
“Again, I have no idea what you're talking about!” The voice of the boy was getting more tempting this time. He withdrew the hand that Jack still had clasped in his own, stuffed the paper in his bag and looked Jack straight in the eyes.
“Of course,” Jack mumbled, his mind suddenly clouded by something he could not comprehend. “I's sorry I's made such an accusation.”
“Thanks for the apology,” Cute Guy said, looking still a little panicked but in a strange way also satisfied. “It was nice to meet you.” He smiled a bit, then hurried off into what seemed to be a randomly picked direction.
“Wait!” Jack called out. The other guy stopped and glanced back at him in confusion. “The name's Jack Kelly. An' who are you?”
“Wouldn't you like to know?”, was the only answer he got before his saviour disappeared into the crowd.
Jack just stood there, dumbfounded. Then, after what seemed like half an eternity, he came back to himself. “Of course he has powers, that sucker,” he mumbled and swore to himself that he'd never fall for that persuading voice again. But to see if he could keep his promise, he had to find the mystery boy once more.

Sam & Eileen - A Supernatural Romance.
I am quite clearly over the moon about 15x06 and Sam reunited with and bringing Eileen back from the dead. I was so over the moon in fact, that I burst into tears when Eileen stepped out of the bathtub and took Sam’s hand. That was… wow.
That was the most romantic moment in this show since 13x05 “it’s never too late” (also a return from the dead!)
So I was inspired to write an homage meta post celebrating Sam and Eileen’s romance looking back at everything canon has given us on this epic pairing.
It turns out, despite all my usual grumbling, there is still one het ship out there that I can totally get behind, and no one deserves love more than our dear Sam Winchester.
11x04 - Baby
This is where I believe the story started for Sam.
“You don’t ever want something more?”
Tumblr media
(x)
“You know, with a hunter? Somebody who understands the life?”
This question, from Sam to his brother at the start of Season 11, has shaped so much of the subtext in the seasons following. It’s significance to the Winchesters individual development arcs, their hopes, their dreams. It blatantly spelled out for the audience what both these boys desire and what they deserve for each of their endgames.
Not a white picket fence, not the apple pie life, just something. Something that suits them. Something to share with someone else, romantically, who might fit that particular box. Let me be very clear here and stress that Sam certainly wasn’t talking about him and Dean finding that something with each other.
Dean’s journey towards finding that something has been building for even longer than this particular moment in canon, with the other stand out scene being his confession in 10x16 where he talked about having things, people, feelings, that I want to experience differently than before, or maybe even for the first time. Dean’s journey is something we have discussed at length, and as every meta writer in fandom knows all too well, it only leads in one particular direction - towards a certain dreamy blue eyed angel.
Sam’s journey has not been discussed as intensely as Dean’s, but 11x04 did lay groundwork for the writers to build upon. It hasn’t been as smooth or as obvious in the subtext as Dean’s either, with certain writing decisions appearing to come out of left field and confuse the path. But it seems that Dabb has course corrected and brought us back on track.
This episode was the first time in canon in a long time that we heard Sam textually voice his desire for a romantic relationship of some kind. I therefore immediately got excited and locked this moment away in a pocket in my heart to pull out again if ever the show would introduce a character who could fit those requirements for Sam.
The show did not disappoint.
11x11 Into the Mystic
GOD I forgot how full of delicious layers this episode was! It was written by the same writer who wrote 11x04. Robbie Thompson clearly had something in mind for Sam when he first wrote that script, and he gave it to us (and Sam) in this episode.
Eileen is introduced in 11x11 as another Hunter on a quest for vengeance - to avenge her murdered family.
It isn’t a surprise that we basically immediately shipped Eileen with Sam after this episode first aired, because her entire backstory is written to compliment Sam. Within the first 5 minutes of getting to know her, she already fulfills the requirements from Sam’s wistful speech in 11x04. She is a hunter, she is someone who understands the life. But more than that, she is all of the following:
She is on a revenge quest
She has murdered parents
She was raised by a Hunter or rather “trained” to be a Hunter rather than raised (in a scene which implies a similarly strict hunter upbringing to Sam and Dean)
She continued hunting alone after her guardian died
Her grandfather was a Man of Letters, making her a MOL Legacy, just like Sam.
Her mother was a lawyer, so she makes a joke about studying law which prompts further bonding with Sam due to his Stanford law education.
Eileen catches Sam’s eye almost immediately, and it is surprising I didn’t pick up on that on my first watch at the time, but Eileen is literally disguised as the cleaner in order to go unnoticed. Sam had no reason to be suspicious of her, and I think at the time we all assumed that he just wanted to question a potential witness - but even so, there was no need to interrupt Mildred to go speak to her. Could Sam’s distraction have been a bit more than strictly professional? In hindsight I’m gonna go with YES.
Their next meet is cute simply because by this point the audience is misled to think that she is actually the banshee. The ominous music tones, the shots of Eileen watching the Winchesters from a window. We believe that she is the villain, and then when she uses magic to pin Sam and comes at him with a dagger it’s practically a romantic trope used in enemies to lovers fics. A case of mistaken identity (another trope) and Sam and Eileen are able to reveal each of their truths. They bond immediately with both Sam and the audience learning all of the above. the checklist requirements indicating their compatibility is so blatantly obvious its almost too on the nose. But then het romance always seems that way doesn’t it?
The real kicker in this episode that made my heart sing at the time was this:
“Feel free to drop me a line if you ever need anything. Or even if you just wanna hang out”
“you can’t call me though, I mean you could call but I won’t answer.”

FIRST OF ALL - HOW DARE YOU KILL ME WITH FEELS SAMMY OVER THAT GORGEOUS SMILE
Sam’s line here though was SUCH A LINE. “Or even if you just wanna hang out”
I see you Sam Winchester. Hoping for Netflix and Chill right? I know you have Netflix. You gave Cas your password. :P
This little interaction at the end of this episode was pure flirtation and it was gorgeous to watch (and to rewatch, with hindsight, knowing what happens in 15x06 to totally deepen their relationship. Urgh. I guess I really am a sucker for a good old fashioned Supernatural Love Story!)
The other big takeaway from this episode is that meeting Eileen rejuvenated Sam. He starts the episode unable to sleep, haunted by his Lucifer trauma and feeling so down and broody that Dean steps in constantly to ask if he’s okay and try to engage in talking about feelings (always a bad sign for a Winchester to get to the point where they feel they need to ask the other to talk about feelings!)
But the end of the episode marks a significant change in Sam. He smiles, he opens up to Dean, he textually states that the case helped him. He opens up a keepsake box (that we never knew he had before this episode) and puts the retirement homes leaflet in there - an indication that he actually has hope that he might live to see a happy retirement (a wonderful sign for someone who just 40 minutes ago was acting like a total nihilist.)
The case alone wasn’t some spectacular revelation, so what else could have possibly caused Sam’s change of heart? The answer is obvious. Eileen did. She acted like a beacon of light this episode for Sam, and in a perfect bookend to how the episode opened, Sam curls up in bed, turns off his light, and is able to sleep. It is only Dean who spends the night restless and haunted.
This was the first time that Eileen acted as a “win” for Sam just by meeting him.
Unfortunately, we don’t meet Eileen again until a whole season later in
12x17 - The British Invasion
This episode is a far cry away from 11x11′s layered genius. Messy, overly plot heavy, too many various character stories causing mental whiplash, too much focus on unnecessary side characters, LUCIFER existing in general, an unnecessary sex scene between Mary and Ketch (eww), a bloody death scene, and moments of utter stupidity from the lead characters.
In other words it’s a CLASSIC BUCKLEMING.
Do yourselves a favour and if you ARE planning on re-watching this episode, just skip to the parts with Dean, Sam and Eileen (the Dagon and Kelly stuff is relatively good as well - the rest is utter garbage).
Anyway, pushing aside my hatred for the terrible duo for a moment, I will say that as per usual, what they lack in subtlety and intelligent subtextual layering, they make up for with a sledge hammer to the face in terms of trying to get a point across. So when it comes to Saileen in this episode, well, it might as well be canon already.
Practically every time Sam and Eileen interact in this episode, they are framed as a flirtatious couple in the early tentative stages. The smiles and playful flirting, the smirks when one does something to make the other proud. It is very clear, even if it is still technically subtextual, that both Jared and Shoshannah are playing this like these characters are attracted to one another, and are building on that relationship.
Hell, even Dean teases Sam twice about Eileen in this episode (though once was in a deleted scene that they should have kept instead of the Lucifer crap):

What we also find out from this opening scene, is that Sam and Eileen have been communicating off screen since 11x11. It is textually confirmed that the two of them have been developing their relationship previously, and we just haven’t seen it. Did Eileen visit the Bunker previously? Because she certainly seemed comfortable there this episode. Have her and Sam cuddled up to watch movies previously? (We know another pairing that textually do this even though we’ve never seen it on screen - Dean and Cas). Dean feels comfortable enough to tease his little brother in that playful typical sibling way, so clearly Eileen at this point has become a more frequent character in Sam’s life. It’s just a shame we as the audience have never seen anything of it until this episode.
This episode might be the first time we have seen her again since her introduction, but it certainly isn’t the first time Sam has seen her since. This is canon.
The rest of this episode continues this theme of displaying with zero subtlety that Sam and Eileen have something more than friendship. One of the easiest ways to truly see the effect of this is just watching Sam in scenes with her compared to Sam at any other time. Like in 11x11, Eileen manages to light Sam up and have him grinning like a puppydog. It’s kind of adorable and also quite shocking when you realise how rare it is to see Sam smile (or any of the characters in this angstfest of a TV show for that matter.)
Just look at the above cheesy smile in the car scene. Look at Sam’s bashful face here when Dean teases him in front of his girl:

Look at this smug face when Eileen snaps back at the irritating guy:

Jared hits every mark playing a loved up Sam Winchester.
By the end of this episode, a tragedy strikes and Eileen is scared off. Their relationship here ends on a comforting hug, because meaningful relationships in this show are almost always first signified with comforting hugs following traumatic events, and tentative hand holding.
The way he strokes her hair gently is just SO touching and intimate.

When all is said and done Eileen leaves, terrified of the British Men of Letters. When Dean asks Sam where she was, he tells him she went back to Ireland, and Sam looks so dejected at that thought. I don’t see how anyone can possibly read his reactions towards Eileen as anything other than romantic affection.
As a bonus point - I will mention that due to Bucklemings sledgehammer approach, it is quite clear that Eileen plays a Cas mirror in this episode. All of her scenes with Sam are paired off against Dean who spends this entire episode trying and failing to get hold of Castiel. In the Winchester’s final scene, Sam greets Dean in the morning and immediately asks his brother about Cas. Sam does this a lot in season 12, because Dean’s concern for Cas is present throughout every episode in which he is absent. Dean admits he is worried, but changes the subject, instead asking Sam about Eileen (note that it is the next morning so Dean assumed she had stayed the night).
Both brothers revert to the other when it comes to their respective partners. Sam leaves it up to Dean to contact and worry about Cas, and Dean does the same with Sam about Eileen. By this being a common pattern throughout pretty much all of Carver/Dabb eras, both brothers subtextually acknowledge that they each have a strong emotional connection with their respective potential romantic partners and therefore any contact or communication about each partner must come from the brother closest.
12x21 - There’s Something About Mary
Another Buckleming episode and the less said about this one the better. I won’t even mention the extremely insulting and inappropriate way to kill off a disabled character (almost as bad as killing off a lesbian by having nazis butcher her) I also won’t comment on the letter that Eileen sent Sam which whilst it did have romantic undertones, was clearly written by a 12 year old girl and did not marry with Eileen’s character at all (Eugenie showing her misogyny again).
The one good thing that came out of this episode (the only good thing) was Jared’s understated grief over Eileen’s death.

His performance dealing with her death in this episode was beautiful. It was understated, but clearly portrayed as heartbreaking. Unfortunately Sam had to push it down and bottle it up.
Eileen’s death was a huge shocker to us all as it didn’t make any sense at that point to cut short a story that seemed so clearly to be on a specific trajectory. We often talk about how Eileen’s romance with Sam at the time was tied to Dean and Cas, and that their relationship paralleled Dean and Cas’s in the narrative. This is all true, especially the death of Eileen coming as foreshadowing for the death of Castiel at series end. Just looking at that above gif of Sam where he looks at her corpse bears an extreme resemblance to Dean pulling back the sheet and looking down at a dead Castiel in 13x01.
However much I squee and love that these relationships are clear mirrors of each other though, I need to stress how Saileen, how Sam and Eileen’s canon relationship, is so much more than that. They may have mirrored Destiel, but they are also totally different, on a different course, and with a totally different backstory. Eileen doesn’t exist just to give Sam his own version of Cas to run off with. She is not there just to push up a separate ship. Sam and Eileen’s romance stands alone in this story. It may mirror DeanCas at times, but its purpose is not for DeanCas. It’s purpose is for Sam and Eileen.
Right from the start she ticked all of Sam’s boxes, and the clear attraction between them made it obvious. Yet Eileen was not written to just be a love interest either. She is an ally, a capable hunter, who is written deeply, with her own trauma’s and tragic past. Yet she keeps fighting, all whilst owning her disability and making it work for her rather than hold her back. She is hardly a Lisa, or an Amelia, both of whom had zero depth of character and were more or less written to look pretty and concerned as the Winchester boys basically treated them terribly. Eileen stands out as an individual character far beyond her relationship with Sam. She was full of potential which is why her quick death was an absolute travesty.
Eileen should not have been killed off. I believe even the writers are well aware of that, and this is why they brought her back.
Which brings me to:
15x06 - Golden Time
We knew long before this episode aired that Eileen would be back as Dabb revealed her return at SDCC. He made comments at the time ensuring that any characters he brought back would not be fanservice, that they would be characters chosen because the writers felt their stories ended too quickly, and that they had more stories to tell. Something I believe that DabbBerens are doing in particular in this season is righting the wrongs of the past. Eileen’s death was a clear “wrong” and I think its highly likely that DabbBerens’ were aware of this and saw Eileen as a no-brainer to bring back. As I said at the start of this post, Dabb is course correcting, getting his endgame plans back on track, and ensuring that he hits certain markers in order to do that.
Once again, we are at a place in the story where Sam is grieving, and suffering deeply from all of the loss and trauma that he has faced. Being God’s personal puppet, losing his mother, losing his son, and losing someone he was close to in Rowena by his own hand, has left him in a dark place. Sam’s arc in early season 15 plays out very similarly to Dean’s arc in early season 13. A Winchester in desperate need of a win.
Eileen was Sam’s win in this episode.
Given the time that has passed since Eileen’s last episode, and how the narrative has progressed since then, I was worried that Eileen’s return would seem like fan service, and would therefore fall flat (I felt this way with AU!Charlie and never warmed to the character because of it). I was also worried that whatever potential relationship might have been building between her and Sam in seasons 11 and 12 might not have shone through in this episode. But thankfully the writers played it pretty damn perfectly and Eileen’s return wasn’t just a small side plot to an otherwise jam packed episode (like Kevin’s return in 15x02). No, her story was the A plot as Sam devoted himself to finding a way to save her from a terrible fate.
My concerns about their potential romantic relationship not being played as it was in 12x17 were also completely unfounded. From the moment Sam saw Eileen’s ghost whilst on a jog the romance was immediately back and I have no doubt that Jared and Shoshannah are once again fully playing up the connection and romantic attraction between the two.
I am so convinced of the romance being put across here, and I want you to see why I adore this so much (in case you don’t already see it). So here are my biggest and most important takeaways from Eileen and Sam’s scenes in this episode and WHY I feel these stand out as significant elements towards proving the writers intentions for this to be an endgame canon relationship:
1. Aside from the obvious similarities between Sam and Eileen that were written into 11x11 in order to ensure that Eileen was able to stand as Sam’s equal, the one other thing that we have long discussed that Sam needs in a partner is someone who at least somewhat understands the trauma and pain that he has experienced in his life. Sam has predominantly bonded with people via shared trauma. Before her death, Eileen had had her fair share of traumatic experiences growing up in the tough hunter lifestyle, but spending an eternity being tortured in Hell is a different level of trauma entirely.
This episode cleverly once again elevated Eileen to the same level as Sam. They are equals now, both through good and bad experiences. Eileen was dragged to Hell, and only escaped when Chuck released the souls. Given that 1 year on Earth is 100 years in Hell, this means that Eileen was in Hell for 250 years give or take. Her trauma, her pain over this, is something that she can’t talk about just yet, but this significant connection between her and Sam was textualised clearly:
SAM: “I’ve been there too. Hell… long time ago. You try and forget but it gets inside you. Talking helps.”
EILEEN: “I can’t. not yet.”
SAM: “I understand”
And he really does. It is something that we can argue is a shared suffering that can create a (forgive me for this) profound bond between two people. The only other people who can understand just what he has been through were Dean (via years of Hell torture), Cas (via shared Lucifer possession), and Rowena (via shared Lucifer torture). Eileen now makes that very small list.
2. The other big factor that this episode made clear to point out textually was that this is not a Chuck manipulation. This really is Eileen, and her return from death is not part of Chuck’s story:
SAM: “Rowena got it, she didn’t know the details but she knew the game was rigged so this. Magic. This is how she kept control.”
The reason I do not believe that Eileen is part of Chuck’s manipulations is this very pointed line right here about Rowena. Along with many other things in this episode that indicate that it isn’t guided by Chuck, Sam specifically clarifies that Rowena used magic to maintain control over her own universe.
Whilst I fully believe that Rowena will be coming back as Queen of Hell (because whatever happens to Heaven and Hell at the end, they will need balance, and someone to play caretaker and Rowena has just been set up for this role far too perfectly for me not to at least consider the option), this episode so beautifully respects and honours her character, to the point that Rowena, even in her absence, is able to control and play architect to all that happens. Rowena effectively is given Chuck’s role over this particular narrative, but instead of being framed as something villainous, it is portrayed as a precious gift that she has given to her protege Sam.
Rowena rigged the system for herself, as Sam textually explains. Her use of magic, was her way of escaping Chuck’s control, and it is through Rowena that Sam is also given this power. The power to bring back someone he loves - who was most likely taken from him by Chuck’s own dark and poorly written story (yes I do believe that Meredith was throwing shade at Buckleming in the deep subtext - pretty much all the other writers do this all the time if you pay close enough attention :P)
Rowena’s journey from villain, to reluctant ally, to friend and then finally to family, is one of the most beautiful and epic journey’s on the show (rivalled only by Castiel in my opinion). She remains one of my all time favourite characters, and her tribute in this episode, that even after death she could bestow such a precious gift to Sam, is one that I think will remain one of the more touching stories this show has given us. This is yet another reason why I believe that Sam and Eileen are endgame. Because it is a gift from Rowena, and I believe it is a gift that will be honoured by the writers.
3. It’s a small moment, but it is IMPORTANT. Sam confirms that he was teaching himself ASL after he met Eileen. In a moment of adorable flirtation Eileen beams at him and a bashful Sam smiles and bounces on the spot like a giddy schoolboy. This is yet another reveal of moments in the lives of the Winchesters that we just don’t see in 40 minute episodes. That it is canon that Sam spent hours of his life teaching himself ASL so he could more effectively communicate with Eileen is so precious. There is no way to argue how much she meant to him.
But it isn’t just evidence of Sam’s affections, it proves to be a useful tool to the hunt in this episode as well. When Sam is unable to speak due to the witches curse, he is instead able to sign “My brother” to Eileen so that she knows to go and get Dean. It is Sam’s knowledge of sign language, which he learned due to his affection and interest in Eileen, that saves his life in this episode.
One point that I HAVE to mention here is how the writers gave so much thought to their depiction of Eileen as a deaf person, and how wonderful her return is as representation for deaf and hard of hearing people everywhere. In both this episode, and also in her first episode 11x11, her disability was not treated as a set back, but as a tool that enables her to get ahead. The only time the writing displayed an insulting and frankly ableist light was Bucklemings 12x21 which isn’t really surprising. We expect such things from Buckleming. The other writers have proven how much more compassionate and caring they are.
The idea that Sam Winchester could end up falling in love with a beautiful, deaf woman in Eileen is practically unheard of in TV media. When do the protagonists ever end up with anyone less than “TV perfect”? It is groundbreaking that Supernatural in it’s 15 seasons has grown so much and come so far. That it started with the fridging of two women, that it’s cast remained predominantly white men throughout its entire run, that it was blackened by excessive misogyny in its early days, as well as ableism via the treatment of Bobby Singer’s paralysis in season 5.
Supernatural has faced heavy criticism throughout it’s run, but it seems like the writers have listened and are learning. By allowing Sam and Eileen to have a happy endgame, they are doing a wonderful service in truly putting this show on the map for progression and representation - They just need to make sure that they follow through on that other big important thing too…
4. Rebirth and new beginnings. I am reminded of 13x05 and the brilliant Steppenwolf song “It’s Never Too Late To Start Again” as I rewatch the bathroom scene for the hundredth time. If the rest of the episode hasn’t already had you crying out how desperately these two should be together I fully believe it was Meredith’s plan (along with the entire production crew and Shoshannah and Jared), to have us all bawling our eyes out in happy tears that Sam and Eileen get to be together now!! (well, I certainly cried. A lot. and ruined my mascara. and squeaked at such a high pitch only dogs could hear me. The only other time I have had that reaction was in 13x05… oh, and 12x19. It’s RARE okay!)
I think the most significant point here is the touching of hands, which calls back to an earlier painful moment in the episode when ghost Eileen reached out to try to comfort Sam as he despaired about being a cosmic joke, and found she wasn’t even able to touch him.
Tumblr media
It is a romantic trope that was most famously used in the film Ghost, where touch was a big part of the on screen relationship. Supernatural displays this same trope rather perfectly here when the big win of the episode takes place, and Eileen emerges from the bathtub alive and whole, and tentatively reaches out to take Sam’s hand again with vastly different results.
Tumblr media
(x)
Sam is so hesitant to touch her back, so fearful that this isn’t real, that he isn’t being allowed this. The overwhelming sense of relief and warmth that radiates from him when he finally does take her hand was exactly what made me burst into tears. The moment is so extremely breathtaking, so intimate and touching that your heart just aches for them to have that happy ending. It’s rare that Supernatural gives us moments like this, but when it does give them, when it allows its characters a win, they are immediately memorable and stand out as bright spots in an otherwise dark show. It’s moments like this that make watching these characters suffer so much worth it in the end.
The hug that comes after the touching of hands is just as intimate. This is portrayed as a lifeline. Something for Sam to grasp onto and breath. Something that inspires him to change his outlook, to gather his determination, and to convince his brother to join him and fight for the happy ending that both of these boys so desperately deserve.
Tumblr media
(x)
The entire bathroom scene was a testament to how well Supernatural can work romance into its narrative. How these talented creators can easily provide us with a romantic scene to tug on our heart strings. Anyone screaming that romance doesn’t belong in this show I will now point at this scene and tell them exactly how wrong they are. This scene is EXACTLY what this show needed.
For anyone denying the romance here (yeah funny how the bronly’s are so anti Saileen - I wonder why...) I’ll spell it out for them:
This is how you set up a romantic scene in TV Production:
1. Candlelight. Check.
2. Soft focus (dates back to the 1930s when films would use soft focus to portray the dreamy emotional uplift of happy couples in love - see Meet Me In Saint Louis for a very clear example). It is almost always considered a filming technique to portray romance. Check.
3. Chivalry. As if any of us didn’t expect Sam to be a perfect gentleman! But the fact is that the way he turns his back and waits with bated breath to see if the spell had worked is shown as anything other than platonic. He is almost shy, knowing that if and when she emerges from the water she will be naked, but he turns to preserve her dignity. Check.
4. Leading on from that, this is literally a naked woman emerging from a bathtub whilst Sam awkwardly stands in the room. It could have been highly sexualised. They could have used that god awful 70s porno music they like so much in this show. Sam could have made a joke to dispel the tension. If this was a platonic friendship, any of these things would have given it away. The fact that none of this happened, that the scene remained tense and intimate but not overly sexualised only further validates the romantic reading. I mean LOOK AT THIS:
Tumblr media
CHECK
5. The music. Music is such an important part in any story. It always plays a vital role in signifying the correct atmosphere, and the correct tone of a scene. We talk about music a lot in relation to Dean and Cas and the sweeping melodic notes that usually compliment any heightened emotional DeanCas scene. The music during THIS scene though? Well it was beautifully romantic in every way. If in doubt, just go back and listen to it with your eyes closed. Play this music track over another random scene of two people sharing a moment, and it will make the scene read as romantic. I guarantee it.
CHECK AND MATE.
Overall, this episode was the most romantic and most intimate Sam and Eileen have ever got yet in canon. It is a clear indication that their relationship is heading in a positive direction. I couldn’t be happier with how the writers are portraying this and am jumping for joy at the thought that Sam might actually get what he desired all those years ago during 11x04 when he tried to bring up the topic to Dean in the Impala.
We know from promo photos, that Eileen is still staying with Sam in 15x07. That she comforts him. With images like this to go on:
Tumblr media
I’d say with some confidence that we will get to further watch their relationship grow, and I couldn’t be more excited for it.
I fully expect there to be darker moments coming up, and potentially Eileen will be sent away for a period of time (my money is on Chuck “dusting” her the way he did with Becky in 15x04 because I don’t believe that kills people and I do believe that they can be brought back from wherever he sends them too - plus “dusting” makes me think of Avengers Endgame which I find amusing because the “dusted” all returned at the end. I wouldn’t be surprised if Supernatural played around with that as it so often likes to play with pop culture references). I think that post Mid Season Finale we will be back to a period of utter loss and despair for the Winchester boys, and that therefore those who they feel strongly for (aka Cas and Eileen) will have to be separated from them.
However, the point is that it is always darkest before the dawn. In this story, 15x06 has laid the groundwork for Eileen to be Sam’s romantic endgame. It’s now up to Sam, and Eileen, to make sure they fight to get what they both so desire.
Bring on the finale show.
(If you liked this meta run through of Sam and Eileen’s building relationship, please leave a comment for me. It took forever to complete! Request: Hi can a request a fluffy Loki x reader fic where the reader is in a situation where she cannot talk often (maybe her voice causes glass to crack and shatter and people to fall unconscious) instead she uses actions to convey her feelings. when Loki arrives with his brother for redemption he tries to get her to talk by annoying her to no avail. They’re alone one time and the reader snaps telling him to stop; he falls unconscious and she cares for him until he comes to. Please and thank you!!

Loki was not happy. Not happy at all. Why wasn’t he happy? Because he was on Midguard. And what was wrong with being on Midguard? Thor, his brother was there. And he was stuck with him.
“Brother, do not worry. I’m sure that my comrades will not hate you. That much,” Thor comforted, slapping his brother on the back.
Stumbling forward, Loki looked back at his brother and scowled. “Oh, yes. I’m sure those mortals just love me after all that I did.”
Sighing, Thor looked at his brother. “You knew not what you were doing. Besides, you are repentant.”
“Am I?” Loki sassed back, earning a disapproving look from the ‘better’ sibling.
“Well, you will be. At least once they are through with you.”
Rolling his eyes, Loki trudged along beside his brother, looking up at the building. Sure, it was impressive for Midguard standards, but not for Asgard. If that was even his home anymore.
“Welcome, to the Avengers,” Thor announced, pushing open the glass doors with ease.
This will be just great, Loki thought to himself as he followed his oaf of a brother inside.
Well, could be going a lot worse, Loki thought as his brother’s teammates glared down at him.
“Why do we have to keep him here again?” Clint asked through gritted teeth, glaring at Loki. Hand tight on his bow, he never removed his eyes from the god.
“Look, I’m not excited about reindeer games being here either,” Tony grumbled.
“But there is no other option, apparently,” Nat finished the sentence, remembering all too well what she had to do to her best friend to get him out of his head.
“He is my brother,” Thor started, looking them all down. “You will be courteous to him, even if he is deserving of your hatred and spite.”
“He destroyed New York with an alien army,” Steve said, glaring at Loki.
“And tried to take over the world,” Bruce added.
“He’s adopted,” Thor said sheepishly, to which Loki rolled his eyes. Bored, Loki began to look over his foes- allies. Most of them Loki remembered. Some, were new. Like the man with the metal arm, the red man, the girl with glowing-red eyes, and many more. As Loki skimmed over his subjects- friends, his eyes landed on one girl in particular. She was odd, but not in the bad sense. She was odd in the sense that she was quiet, odd in the sense that she distanced herself from others. Curious, Loki continued to look at her, until she noticed and began blushing prominently. Her eyes darted towards Clint, and he saw immediately.
“You stay away from her,” Clint almost growled, moving in front of the odd girl. Loki did not care though. He was intrigued by this girl and wanted to know more. Wanted to know what she liked and disliked, why she was here. One way or another, Loki was going to know that girl.
Two months have passed since Loki arrived at the Avengers compound, and things were a little better. The others were talking to him now, and Loki wasn’t sure if he liked it or not. The company was nice from time to time, when they weren’t glaring at him. Loki always brushed them off though. Some people just don’t understand that he had changed.
Mainly, for her.
Loki had tried everything to talk to the girl. Anytime that he nearly got close to even saying hello, the mother hen swooped in between them.
“No way,” Clint growled one day, standing in front of the girl once more.
“I just want to talk to her, I’m not bad anymore,” Loki had pleaded.
Laughing, Clint shook his head. “Yeah. I’ll believe it when I see it. And good luck talking to her anyway, she-”
But before the mother hen could even finish his sentence, the girl had tapped on his shoulder. The girl had obviously communicated to the arrow man, Loki just did not understand how. She didn’t move her lips, but rather her hands. When Loki first saw this, he thought she was doing magic.
“Are you a sorceress?” Loki had asked in amazement, to which Clint glared him down, offended.
“Out.” He demanded, and Loki quickly made his way out, not wanting to find out what would happen to him if mother hen got any angrier.
So Loki’s quest to talk to the mysterious girl continued, always trying to get close to her. Over the two months that he had been there, he had learned three things about the beautiful and mysterious girl:
1) She did not like mornings. Her face scrunched up in the cutest of ways whenever she was woken up before 9 a.m.
2) Her favorite color was green, or so Loki assumed. She always wore some article of green, whether it be the oversized green sweatshirt she stole from the man with the metal arm or her green shoes, which she wore everywhere.
3) She loved movies, more than life itself apparently. Whenever Loki was looking for her to talk to her (before mother hen showed up), she was sitting in the room with the screen, a different movie on it each time he saw her. Some days it would be little cartoons dancing and singing across the screen, others it would be miniature people falling in love. Without fail though, Loki noticed that every Friday night she watched the same movie, over and over. One with a half fish-half human hybrid and her colorful fish friends.
With each new little tidbit of information about the girl, Loki grew more and more interested. Loki not only thought about her all day, but even dreamed about being able to talk to the beautiful girl, face to face. Just when Loki was about to give up on all hope of ever speaking to the girl, a bit of luck was finally in Loki’s favor.
The heroic team was heading off on a mission, one where they needed almost every member, except for the mysterious girl. Loki, jumping at the opportunity to speak with her, helped pack everyone’s bags that night. To the team, he seemed just a bit too happy.
“Are you sure we can leave him here, Thor?” Steve had asked, glancing at Loki.
“Believe it or not, he is acting a lot better,” Thor commented as he put everyone’s luggage onto the quinjet.
“Yes, but he will be here all alone,” Tony added. The girl, apparently did not like that for she stomped her foot in defiance.
Thor had saw her little foot stomp and smiled. “He will not be alone, (Y/N) will be here.”
Aha! Her name! Loki thought, adding another piece to the puzzle.
Laughing, Clint put his supplies in the quinjet. “Yeah, if anyone can handle him, it's  (Y/N).”
This seemed to have made (Y/N) happy, for she nodded her head in triumph.
“I’ll be good,” Loki started, causing everyone to look at him. “Promise.”
“We shall see, brother,” Thor said, clapping his hand on his brother’s shoulder, causing Loki to lose his footing for a moment. “If not, well, you’ll be in for a shock. (Y/N), take care of him for me. Don’t let him get into too much mischief.”
(Y/N) smiled and nodded at Thor, waving the team goodbye.
“That’s no fair,” Loki grumbled to himself. “I’m the god of mischief. It’s literally what I do.”
As soon as the quinjet had disappeared over the horizon, (Y/N) had went back into the compound. Not wanting to lose her in the maze of halls and corridors, Loki followed right after her.
“So,” Loki started, falling into step with her. “Just you and me.”
All she did was quirk up an eyebrow at him before continuing on her way.
“Right. Silent treatment. Well, that has never stopped me before,” Loki continued as he followed her into the room with the screen. Lighting up at the opportunity, Loki walked over to the shelves full of discs.
“Shall we watch one?” Loki asked, digging through the movies. “I’ve never actually seen one of these ‘movies.’ What do you recommend?”
He was met with silence. Smile faltering a bit, because literally the girl of his dreams would not talk to him, he turned back to the shelf. Finding something somewhat familiar, Loki held out the case to her. “How about this?”
Looking back, her whole face lit up and she nodded enthusiastically, causing Loki to smile. “Okay,” Loki said, looking at the title before putting the disc into the strange contraption. “The Little Mermaid it is.”
Moving towards the couch, Loki sat down next to her. Trying to control his breathing, he constantly found himself looking at (Y/N) throughout the movie, committing every detail of her to memory. Loki did this so often that he ended up missing the movie.
“Wait, why is the fish-girl having problems with her father?” Loki asked. No answer.
“Why is the crab singing to her? Life is not better down where it’s wetter. You’re wet all the time. Plus there are sharks, nasty little creatures. Worst than bildshnipe, I hear. Or at least Thor tells me.” No answer.
“OH NO, A SHARK!” No answer.
“Don’t go near the evil squid lady. Why would you go near the evil squid lady?” No answer.
All this time, (Y/N) never answered. She did seem to be getting more and more annoyed, though.
“Wait, why does she need to kiss the Prince? To get her voice back? That is highly unlikely, magic does not work like-”
“WILL YOU JUST SHUT UP ALREADY?!” The girl shouted. A ringing noise sounded through the room, and before Loki even knew it, he was out cold.
Blinking away the black spots in his vision, Loki was met with a pounding headache. Staring up at the ceiling, Loki started to feel alarmed until he felt something moving through his hair. Looking around, Loki was soon met with the most beautiful pair of (Y/E/C) eyes he had ever seen. What made them even more beautiful was that they were your eyes.
“What happened?” Loki groaned, trying to sit up. He was soon pushed back down by (Y/N) so that his head lay on her lap. She held up a finger as if to say ‘one moment’ and grabbed the nearest notebook and pen she could find. Sprawling out her message with one hand and combing through his hair with the other, she finally had written out her message:
‘Sorry, I didn’t mean to knock you out. I’m an enhanced and my voice knocks people out, especially when I yell. I didn’t mean to make you pass out.’
Reading the message, Loki began to smile. “It’s alright, Love. You didn’t mean to. I’m just glad that we are finally communicating.”
Blushing at his words, she began to write out another message.
'I get that, now. I mean, who talks during a movie?’
It was Loki’s turn to blush now as he read your note. “Sorry, I am not familiar with proper movie etiquette. But I’d love to learn.”
Smiling, she wrote down her next message.
'I’d love to teach you, if you gave me a chance. Then you can ask all the questions you want, whether about me or the movie.’
“Sounds absolutely, perfect, Love,” Loki said with a smile. The pounding in his head had finally stopped, and Loki was able to sit up now, but he didn’t want to leave her gentle caresses just yet.
'Can you sit back up yet?’ She wrote out, quirking another eyebrow up at him.
“No,” Loki lied. “Not yet. Still hurts.” She nodded at his answer and continued to card her fingers through his black hair, leaving Loki in a bliss. Well, he was the god of mischief, after all. What else was he going to do, except lie a little to stay with the girl of his dreams?

Marco Diaz Is (Not) Cis Male Masterpost
THESE POSTS ARE AIMED TO DEBUNK CIS MARCO EVIDENCE AND SHOW THAT THEY DO NOT DISPROVE THE TRANS MARCO THEORY.
So this is my Masterpost detailing all the evidence that points towards Marco Diaz of “Star Vs The Forces of Evil” being cis male and debunking that evidence. If I have missed out any evidence please let me know.
(Right now I am binge watching through the episodes again to collect this evidence so if an episode isn’t up yet I haven’t reached it)
Disclaimer: For those who believe Marco is cis male, you are fine to keep believing that and I am not trying to change your mind. This is largely for those who take some sort of weird offence to the Trans Marco Theory and purposely go out of their way to attack it. If you wish to partake in some polite discourse over the theories I am happy to do so and after we can go our own separate ways believing what we wish.
Enjoy :)
Season 1
Star Comes to Earth
1. “Marco says they are a “Misunderstood bad boy” and gets defensive about being called “the safe kid”.“
Right, so a lot of this is gonna be me inputting my own perspective as a trans person. Back in high school I constantly claimed to be a gangster, not that women can’t be gangsters but at the time that wasn’t the image I had in my head. I was imagining me being this bulked up masculine guy carrying a gun and I’m sure you can imagine the rest. I was quite obviously nothing of the sort but this image of being a big tough gangster was one I wanted to show to the world. Guess why? I was overcompensating. If anyone called me anything other than a gangster, I’d get defensive because I was insecure about my masculinity. At night when I went to bed I prayed God would let me wake up the next morning a girl. Yet at school, to my peers I portrayed a very different persona. I remember there was actually a kid who was gay in my year and up until I came out I was very sure to put a distance between me and that guy. I hate to say it but I was pretty horrible to him. I have since apologised but I still regret my behaviour.
Marco’s adamants that they are a “misunderstood bad boy” feels very parallel to the fact I was adamant I was a “gangster” back in high school. I was 11 years old, like I even owned a gun XD
2. “Marco is referred to by male pronouns throughout this episode, even referring to themselves by male pronouns.”
Yes, they are. I seem to remember for 14-15 years of my own life being referred to by male pronouns and referring to myself by male pronouns. It was called being in the closet.
3. “Marco presents as male throughout this episode.”
As did I for 20 years of my life. Plus just cos someone has their hair cut short and doesn’t wear feminine attire doesn’t mean they can’t identify as female. I know some cis women who have short hair and wear men’s clothes and very much identify as female.
Party with Pony to School Spirit
1. “Marco is once again consistently referred to by male pronouns and doesn’t object to this.”
So as said in my last post, this could just simply mean they are in the closet and doesn’t disprove the Trans Marco Theory.
2. “Marco is once again presenting as male.”
And again could just mean they are in the closet and doesn’t disprove the Trans Marco Theory.
Monster Arm
1. “Marco doesn’t want Star to give them pigtails.”
Marco doesn’t actually say “No” to this, but kinda groans in resignation and personally I feel that was more at the fact that Star didn’t feel comfortable fixing Marco’s arm as opposed to the prospect of getting pigtails. I don’t really feel like Marco cared about the pigtails either way. Sure, being okay with having pigtails doesn’t make a guy trans but it doesn’t make them cis either.
2. “They showed Marco nipples. Disney wouldn’t show Marco’s nipples if they are trans.”
So yes, as a rule Disney will not show the nipples of a female character. I can quite easily get behind this point. However Disney has never had an openly trans character and if Marco being trans does become canon, it will surely cause controversy so maybe Disney and those making the show would just not want to draw suspicion.
Also I’ll be honest, in concept I do think Marco was probably intended to be cis male, I mean Daron Nefcy based Marco on her husband, which unless this is some strange way for Daron’s husband to come out of the closet most likely means Marco was intended to be a cis male character. However as shows or any work of fiction is made it will undergo development which no one really expected at the beginning. Additionally “Star Vs The Forces of Evil” is a storyboard driven show which I imagine gives more fluidity to what the end result of the show will be in comparison to its original concept.
My basic point here is I feel for most of Season 1 Marco was being coded as cis male and the trans coding started later on, somewhere between the end of Season 1 and the start of Season 2.
Characters evolve and become their own as a show or work of fiction develops.
3. “Marco is once again consistently referred to by male pronouns and doesn’t object to this.”
So as said in my last post, this could just simply mean they are in the closet and doesn’t disprove the Trans Marco Theory.
4. “Marco is once again presenting as male.”
And again could just mean they are in the closet and doesn’t disprove the Trans Marco Theory.
The Other Exchange Student
1. “Marco is once again presenting as male.”
And again could just mean they are in the closet and doesn’t disprove the Trans Marco Theory.
Cheer Up, Star
1. “Marco’s ringtone is ironic. They say so in the show.”
They actually more of protest that is ironic. Like in reality they like “Space Unicorn” but they are worried what people will think if they admit it due to it being viewed as a feminine thing to like. And we found out in the recent live chats Marco does in fact like “Space Unicorn”. Doesn’t necessarily mean they are trans but doesn’t mean they are cis either. It does prove they are insecure about having a feminine interest.
2. Following on from the last point, “Boys can like feminine things too.”
True and simultaneously it can be an indication of someone being trans. In reality it isn’t solid evidence either way and so doesn’t prove Marco is cis, nor does it prove they are trans either.
3. “Marco is once again presenting as male.”
And again could just mean they are in the closet and doesn’t disprove the Trans Marco Theory.
Quest Buy
1. “Marco is once again presenting as male.”
And again could just mean they are in the closet and doesn’t disprove the Trans Marco Theory.
Diaz Family Vacation
1. “Marco goes for a whizz in the woods and says, “Nothing makes you feel more like a man than taking a whizz in the woods.” If Marco were trans there is no way they’d take a whizz in the woods.“
So firstly, the line where Marco says, “Nothing makes you feel more like a man than taking a whizz in the woods.” This really sounds like overcompensation to me, that or it is a very pointless line of information I really don’t want to know.
As for the latter point, I am really speaking from my own experience here as I know there are some people who would rather hold it than use even public facilities but from my own experience, before I had surgery standing to go to the loo was a convenience especially if I was hiking or something where there were no facilities. I additionally don’t really pass so I generally feel safer in the men’s toilets and back before I had surgery, I liked to be in and out of the toilet as quickly as possible as I still do and so a lot of the time I used the urinals. It was just quicker and more convenient. Didn’t mean I liked having that anatomy.
And sorry if that was a bit TMI on my toilet habits.
2. “Marco is once again presenting as male.”
And again could just mean they are in the closet and doesn’t disprove the Trans Marco Theory.
Brittney’s Party
Mewberty
1. “Marco consistently is gendered as male in this show and the one time they aren’t they protest.”
Now this is where I feel it gets a little more interesting. So this episode puts a lot of emphasis on Marco being a “boy” but at the same time I feel it doesn’t.
So very early on you get Star realising she is going through Mewberty and she tells Marco they need to keep her away from boys before realising “Wait, Marco’s a boy.” At this Marco backs away nervously, which can be attributed to being nervous about what Star’s Mewberty will entail so fine. But after this point Star really seems to disregard Marco as a boy and I know I am going into a theory that has been said before. But when Star acknowledges Marco as a boy she still seems semi-aware of everything. Then Marco touches her about a minute later which causes this purple stuff to fire from her hands. To me that struck me as more a defence reflex than attraction, like there is a rival female who needs to be dealt with. We see something similar a bit later when Marco is trying to protect the other boys of the school, Star pushes Marco against a locker with this purple stuff, before being distracted by Oskar and it feels more like Star trying to get Marco out of the way than kidnap them like the other boys in the school. It really did feel like Star was disregarding Marco as a boy for most of the episode and instead viewing them as a threat, making me think Star saw them as a rival female.
And here is where I touch onto the theory that I have seen brought up before, maybe there is something magical that lets magical beings determine gender beyond genetics and pheromones, etc cos we then have Glossaryck call Marco “m'lady”, Marco protests but Glossaryck adds “Could have fooled me.” It really makes me feel their is something magical that lets magical beings determine gender beyond genetics and pheromones, etc.
As for Marco protesting to being called “m'lady”, back when I was younger and closeted I used to protest if anyone called me a girl so it proves nothing.
2. “Marco was once again presenting as male in this episode.”
And again could just mean they are in the closet and doesn’t disprove the Trans Marco Theory.
Pixtopia
Lobster Claws
1. Marco is once again presenting as male throughout this episode.
As stated before, this means very little and could just mean they are still in the closet and we now also know that Marco hates choosing pants each morning, which given Marco wears the same pants everyday with the exception of special occasions suggests there is perhaps something else Marco would prefer to wear but chooses not too. This decision seems to be so painstaking they are jealous of Pony Head for not having legs.
2. Marco continues to be consistently continues to be referred to by male pronouns and doesn’t once object.
Again, this means nothing. It could just simply mean they are still in the closet.
Sleep Spells
1. Marco is once again presenting as male throughout this episode.
As stated before, this means very little and could just mean they are still in the closet.
2. Marco continues to be consistently continues to be referred to by male pronouns and doesn’t once object.
Again, this means nothing. It could just simply mean they are still in the closet.
Freeze Day
1. “Marco is shown as being an elderly man when jumping across the Time stream.”
I kinda imagine this just instantly ages or makes people younger with no real consideration for what course their lives will take in the future, therefore I feel this has no baring on the direction that Marco’s life will take.
2. “Marco presents as male throughout this episode once again.”
Again this could just mean Marco is still in the closet. Just to add additional Marco could possibly be non-binary or gender fluid. Either way it doesn’t prove Marco is cis.
Royal Pain
1. “Marco is once again presenting as male.”
And again could just mean they are in the closet and doesn’t disprove the Trans Marco Theory.
Blood Moon Ball
1. “Marco presents as male throughout this entire episode.”
Once again, they could simply still be in the closet or they are non-binary/genderfluid. This does not disprove Marco is trans.
Fortune Cookies
1. “Marco presents as male throughout this entire episode.”
Once again, they could simply still be in the closet or they are non-binary/genderfluid. This does not disprove Marco is trans.
2. “Marco is referred to by male pronouns and doesn’t object once.”
Unless I missed anything Ferguson calls Marco “man” once, I can’t remember the exact line but something like “Man, don’t mess with the power of the fortune cookies.” Sometimes when speaking like this people use the terms “man”, “dude” and “guy” indiscriminately regardless of gender. Plus Marco could be in the closet still and therefore wouldn’t object.
Mewnipendence Day
1. “Marco continues to present as male in this episode.”
Again, could just mean they are in the closet.
The Banagic Incident
1. “Marco continues to present as male.”
2. “Marco is referred to by male pronouns and doesn’t object.”
Both could mean Marco is in closet and nothing more. Does not disprove trans Marco.
Interdimensional Field Trip
1. “Marco continues to present as male in this ep”
Again, just could me they are in the closet.
Marco Grows A Beard
1. “Marco wants a beard.”
True, but they could have simply been doing this to fit in and it did largely look like their end goal was to impress Jackie. Also I can’t really put it into words right now but in the end with the hair growing out of control, it felt like that was a metaphor for something. I’m still trying to put it into words in my head though.
Also something noticed this time round is Star uses one of the laser puppies to break through the hair and I might be overthinking it but laser hair removal instantly entered my mind.
2. “Marco continues to present as male throughout this episode.”
Could just be in the closet and doesn’t mean they aren’t trans.
St. Olga’s Reform School For Wayward Princesses
1. “Marco only wore the dress because they were forced to and wanted to be disguised as one of the cool guards.”
True but I feel like if Marco wanted to be disguised as one of the guards that badly and objected to being disguised as a Princess they would have objected more. Plus by the end Marco was concerned as to whether they would be allowed to keep the dress (something we know from “Heinous” and one of the live chats they did keep)“ and Marco did legitimately seem a hell of a lot more comfortable in the Princess dress. I mean this bit of dialogue between Pony Head and Marco;
“Pony Head: Oh, I gotta! I can’t let what happened to me happen to anyone else! [To Marco] Right, Princess Turdina?
Marco: Get on with your bad self, my wayward sister!”
I have never seen Marco be quite that sassy or confident throughout the show. Marco very quickly assimilates into that role and doesn’t seem at all awkward. Like I said, they seem more confident to me than Marco in male gender role.
2. “Marco doesn’t object to female pronouns to keep up their disguise.”
For some of the show, yes I can agree with this but later when with the other princesses and they have gained control of the school, Marco no longer has reason to keep up to that disguise yet even in that moment refers to themselves as a “wayward sister”, not once but twice and with no hesitation as if it comes across naturally and for once, it doesn’t even feel like Marco is exaggerating or forcing it like they do with their “I’m misunderstood bad boy” line.
Storm the Castle
1. “Marco present as male throughout this episode,”
Could just mean they are in the closet. Moving on.
2. “Marco is referred to by male pronouns throughout this episode and doesn’t protest once.”
The one time I saw this happen they weren’t present to protest unless I missed anything. And just to cover all bases, they could just be in the closet.
Season 1 Summary
So the main things I have noticed through Season 1 to indicate that Marco is cis male, is that they consistently get referred to by male pronouns and objects to being called by female pronouns with the exception of the St. O’s episode.
This doesn’t necessarily mean Marco is cis though and could just mean they are in the closet.
Additionally Marco seems quite insecure about their masculinity, during the St. O’s episode they continue to be referred to and refer to themselves by female pronouns past the point where their disguise is necessary and also despite being initially forced to disguise themselves as a princess, by the end they were concerned as to whether they could keep the dress or not and seemed quite comfortable in their female gender role.
All this indicating to me that they are quite possibly trans.
Season 2
My New Wand
1. “Plenty of guy cover themselves with a towel in the same way Marco does in this episode.”
Okay, admittedly I have nothing on this point. But just cos plenty of guys do it, it doesn’t prove Marco is cis.
Just one point I’d like to add though that someone pointed out a while back. In this season they apparently put in a lot of effort into keeping Marco’s chest covered. I mean I believe Marco was originally meant to be a cis male character and this changed somewhere during Season 1 (roughly between “Cheer Up, Star” and “Diaz Family Vacation”). Disney would avoid showing female chests due to being a children’s media outlet and in this episode we see already, Marco has a towel covering their chest and then when in the closet they very quickly cover up their chest once again. Also they make sure the frame of the closet door blocks out most of their chest during the point their towel has been stripped away. I’m gonna see if this continues through this season. I already know two places where this rule doesn’t seem to apply but I’ll tackle that when I reach those episodes.
2. “Marco on wore women’s clothes in the closet due to lack of choice.”
Yeah, it is Star’s secrets closet so arguably only Star’s clothes will be in there. Still doesn’t prove Marco is cis though.
3. “The whole Marco in the closet thing was meant to be taken literally and not as a metaphor.”
I know at present no writer will confirm this one way or another but my basic argument here is; just like me you don’t work on the show so you can’t say this definitively just like I can’t. And metaphor or not, Marco could still be trans.
4. “Marco is referred to by male pronouns throughout this episode and does not object once.”
Well duh, Marco was in the closet the entire episode XD See what I did there?
But in all seriousness this could simply mean Marco is in the closet and does not prove or disprove one way or the other.
Ludo in the Wild
Marco is absent from this episode. No evidence either way.
Mr Candle Cares
1. “Marco saying they want to be Queen was a gag that wasn’t meant to be taken seriously.”
It is possible but again not being a writer in the show you cannot say this definitively. Plus as a one off gag it would probably have gone “Man, I’d love to be Queen” and ended there but Marco seems to have some pretty vivid ideas of what being a Queen would entail and what it would mean to them. This leads me to believe it was a more serious line. It also revealed a few of Marco’s insecurities in the process. So I sort of feel this line was meant to be taken seriously from my personal perspective.
Plus Marco brings up the fact they’d never have to choose an outfit again and people would do that for them. Marco wears the same outfit everyday yet they seemingly find the task of picking this same outfit so painstaking they’d rather have someone choosing clothes for them. Strikes me as a tad odd.
2. “Marco continues to present as male throughout this episode.”
Simply could mean they are still in the closet.
3. “Marco continues to be referred to by male pronouns throughout this episode.”
Could simply mean they are still in the closet.
Red Belt
1. “Marco being horrified they are wearing a suit was meant as a one off gag.”
Again it is possible however not being a writer of the show you cannot say this definitively. Also Marco visibly moves their hands towards their neck as if they find the idea of being buried in a suit suffocating. Doesn’t necessarily point to dysphoria but it is quite a strong reference especially given this was shown in the context of a “stuck in life” dream, something we know Marco has commonly enough to have told Star.
2. “Marco continues to present as male in this episode.”
Could just mean they are in the closet.
3. “Marco is referred to by male pronouns throughout this episode and doesn’t protest once.”
Could just mean they are in the closet still.
Star On Wheels
1. “Marco is consistently referred to by male pronouns in this episode”
Could just mean they are in the closet.
2. “Marco presents as male in this episode.”
Could just mean they are in the closet.
3. “Glossaryck only calls Marco by the name Margo to be annoying”
I’ll be honest that I do not like the name Margo, in all honesty I would prefer Marco to just remain Marco. But nonetheless, Glossaryck is an infinitely knowledgeable magical being and although it is possible that Glossaryck is just being a jerk to Marco, it is possible that Margo, a French feminine name will be Marco’s future name. And even if Glossaryck is just being a jerk it does not prove that Marco is cis.
Fetch
1. “The dog was never a metaphor for dysphoria.”
I’ll be honest I have never fully bought into this idea either however I can see where people who support this idea come from. Plus the dog was like misgendered as male the entire episode before finally speaking. And the whole trying to quiet their mind thing. I can see where those who believe this come from and even if it wasn’t a metaphor, it still doesn’t disprove Marco being trans.
2. “Marco presents as male throughout this episode.”
Could be in the closet still.
3. “Marco is consistently referred to by male pronouns in this episode and doesn’t object.”
Could just mean they are in the closet still.
Star Vs Echo Creek to Girls’ Day Out
1. “Marco presents as male throughout this episode.”
Could just mean they are in the closet.
2. “Marco is referred to by male pronouns throughout this episode and does not object once.”
Could just mean they are in the closet.
Sleepover
1. “Marco continues to present as male in this episode.”
Could just mean they are in the closet.
2. “Marco continues to be referred to by male pronouns with no objection.”
Could just mean they are in the closet.
3. “The secret Marco doesn’t want to share is that they have a crush on Jackie.”
So if we merely take this episode on its own maybe you have a point, however I do normally do this in order but I am going to reference some future episodes in my evidence here. Even after revealing their crush on Jackie the very next episode reveals Marco continues to have secrets they wish to keep to themselves when they buy a magically locking wallet. They also continue to have insecurities they keep secret all the way up to “Naysaya” and something has me convinced that those weren’t all Marco’s insecurities/secrets, for example after everything had been said another insecurity popped up while Marco was with Jackie at the cinema in that episode.
My main point here though is Marco seems to be a very secretive person and they are bound to have more than one secret. Whether this means Marco is trans is up for debate but their crush on Jackie clearly isn’t their only secret.
Gift of the Card
1. “Marco is a guy who just likes feminine things.”
It is a possible explanation for why Marco likes pink ballet pumps however it doesn’t prove they are cis.
2. “Marco is only referred to by female pronouns during this episode due to the disguise they wore at St. O’s.”
Okay, this works for the villains; Ms. Heinous, Gemini and Rasticore however it doesn’t work for other characters. Janna seems unfazed when Rasticore asks for the location of “Princess Marco” and she was paying attention as evident by the line “Why did you ask when you already knew the answer.” Also a bit later the sloth at Customer Service goes to Star “Sorry dude” disregarding Marco as male for a second before going “Dudes” while staring at Marco. It’s also so subtle I wouldn’t even call it a gag, I honestly didn’t notice watching it first time round. Finally, both Star and Marco don’t even bother correcting Rasticore when he calls them both Princesses, maybe they were just in shock but there did seem to be a theme here.
3. “There could be other explanations beside dysphoria as to why Marco doesn’t feel comfortable shopping in public.”
True but this still doesn’t prove Marco is cis.
Friendenemies
1. “Marco presents as male throughout this episode.”
Could just mean they are in the closet.
2. “Marco was only called “girl” because it was in the lyrics of the song Tom was singing.“
True but this song was written for the show meaning the choice of wording was deliberate, Marco’s second favourite song or not.
Is Mystery
Marco Diaz was absent during this episode.
Hungry Larry
1. “The meaningless reference to gender with Janna and Star was a one off gag.”
I’ll be honest, I do personally agree with this, it did come off as a gag to me, especially considering Marco wasn’t present however it does not prove that Marco is cis.
2. “You’re reading too much into this episode and even if Marco’s Dad does feel inadequate as a father this could be for other reasons.”
True but it still doesn’t prove Marco is cis.
3. “Marco presents as male throughout this episode.”
Karate uniform is arguably unisex but they could just be in the closet.
Spider with a Top Hat
1. “Spider with a Top Hat was not a metaphor for dysphoria and you are reading too much into it.”
Seen as neither of us our writers on the show, neither of us can definitively say this and even if we could it doesn’t prove Marco isn’t trans.
2. “Marco presents as male during this episode.”
Could just mean they are in the closet.
Into the Wand
1. “Marco presents as male throughout this episode.”
Well for most of this episode it isn’t the real Marco and for the one small part it is the real Marco, this could just mean they are in the closet.
Pizza Thing
1. “Marco being called by female pronouns and feminine names is just part of a running gag.”
Hmmmm, in this episode I guess it is kinda possible but still doesn’t prove Marco is cis.
2. “Marco didn’t want to wear make-up and was just insecure about being called out on how they look.”
Again, possible but doesn’t prove Marco is cis.
3. “Marco presents as male throughout this episode.”
This could just mean that Marco is in the closet and doesn’t prove they are cis.

1. “Marco is excited about getting their first chest hair.”
Okay it is possible that as a cis male Marco could be excited about this but in my honest opinion it struck me as a bit over the top and like Marco was overcompensating a little. Granted it is me self-projecting here but back when I was a young teen I was one of the first in “guys” my year to start going through puberty (I was about 11 years old) and at the time I took pride in that, as it made me feel more “normal”.
Granted, it is not solid evidence Marco is trans but it does strike me as overcompensating a little to get so excited about one chest hair. And it isn’t the over compensation, lets go back to “Diaz Family Vacation”, “Nothing makes you feel more like a man than taking a wiz in the woods” of however the line went. Not to mention that line was very unnecessary and just brought to attention Marco doing a bodily function I really didn’t care to hear about.
2. “Marco presents as male throughout this episode.”
Could just mean they are in the closet.
Naysaya
1. “Marco’s insecurities were just a gag.”
I highly doubt this seen as one was referenced all the way back in “Mr Candle Cares” (Marco’s fear of bathing alone), something Daron Nefcy said when asked about it that the reason would be revealed later in the season, so either Nefcy was screwing with the fan base or the insecurity has plot significance. Additionally this is a long list of insecurities which strikes me as something to be taken seriously as opposed to laughed at.
2. “If Marco is trans the Naysaya would have said it.”
It is possible Marco doesn’t realise they are trans and has insecurities they are as of yet unaware of. It is shown at the end of the episode a new insecurity appear when Marco and Jackie are at the cinema together.
3. “Marco presents as male during this episode.”
Could just mean they are in the closet.
4. “Marco goes by male pronouns throughout this episode.”
Could just mean they are in the closet.
Bon Bon the Birthday Clown
1. “Marco wears a cologne that translates to “Smell of Man”.“
This strikes me as overcompensating. Back when I was young I used to wear Lynx (or Axe as it is known in America and in mainland Europe) deodorant all the time to prove I was manly. It could just mean Marco is insecure about their masculinity but it strikes me as an overcompensation as opposed to proof Marco is cis male. I did notice that interestingly enough Marco passed over putting on the deodorant with the hella huge muscles on. Perhaps Marco is simply wearing cologne to the dance cos it is a special occasion but at the same time maybe they feel more feminine (assuming they are trans) putting on cologne as opposed deodorant so recently switched over. Hmmmm, I actually know of an episode I could look at to test that theory.
2. “Marco is simply a teenage boy insecure about their appearance which is why they cover the mirror while they shower and their body afterwards.”
Possible, but it doesn’t prove Marco isn’t trans. Plus let’s assume Marco is cis, if I were a cis guy insecure about my body I imagine wanting to look at myself to look for signs of improvement. I mean sure probably make Marco feel worse about themselves but if they are cis and it is basic insecurities related to be slow going through puberty, in time that issue will rectify itself. Flip side though, if Marco doesn’t want to go through that male puberty, I can and know I would want to hide my body in that scenario.
I could be wrong about this though, I’m speaking from my own perspective. Just to say on the flip side though, when I started on estrogen, despite still hating my body at the time I finally started looking as I wanted to spot the changes.
3. “Marco was answering for Jackie regarding the corsage.”
Well that would be kinda rude and doesn’t really strike me as the sort of thing Marco would do. Again this is me self-projecting a little but when I first started acknowledging myself (in my head at least) as female, my brain got very gender confused with day to day conversation. I’d accidentally mishear things when gender was within the sentence and sometimes felt what I was hearing was a jab at or at least directed at me cos my brain was struggling to process keeping one gender identity hidden while expressing a totally different one to the public. Don’t really know if this made any sense but Marco’s reaction in this scene seemed very like ones I made early on in my acknowledgment that I might be trans.
I really hope this paragraph made sense.
4. Just cos I know it has been said “Disney won’t have Marco date a girl if they are also going to be trans.”
So I am tempted to agree with this statement, due to the level of controversy it will cause I am guessing Marco will either be GB or T. However this is what I am guessing.
Regardless though, Marco is right now presenting as male and therefore to keep portraying the straight person Marco will for the time being at least be dating girls assuming the plan is to have them come out as trans eventually. And when that time comes around there are many a ways to reasonably explain Marco’s change of attraction to guys. And this is all assuming Disney wades into controversy as opposed to diving in at the deep end. Who knows, as unlikely as it maybe the House of Mouse may surprise us. Granted it was only background characters but the number of same-sex kisses in “Just Friends” struck me as more than I was expecting.
5. “Marco and Jackie doing the “Titanic” scene with Marco as the girl and Jackie as the guy was just a gag.“
Okay, not sure if this argument has ever been made but just to cover all bases, maybe. And maybe it is just a hint at Jarco’s future as a ship. In fact I think that is the most popular argument for this scene. Why didn’t I use that? Okay, I am guessing that argument is pretty much the nail on the head though.
6. “Glossaryck calling Marco “m'lady” was clearly a gag as he also called Ludo “m'lady”.“
Okay, so I now have a theory here. So perhaps this is just a running gag which if it is I kinda dislike. However the book is meant for magical princesses. Glossaryck makes this clear in Mewberty. What if when the book is open those two times Glossaryck senses the book if in another person’s possession and that is just like his go to greeting? He goes straight into it without really paying attention. Just a theory. Also if this were the case, when Marco says “I’m not a m'lady”, Marco says it quite defensively, Ludo just says it nonchalantly. Also Glossaryck gives Marco a good look up and down before saying, “You could have fooled me.” Now I know some people may view this as offensive, but without Marco really being confirmed trans canonically and the fact we don’t fully know the extent of Glossaryck’s powers yet, I am reserving judgement.
7. “Marco wears a suit in this episode.”
I wore a suit to my Prom. It was fun occasion and I had a laugh with my mates, we joked about how we looked like we were in the Mafia and we took a group photo that looked like it was from an office sitcom.
Also in comparison to the earlier “stuck in life” dream, Prom and any school dance (this being a generic school dance I am guessing) is just a snap shot of your life, in comparison to the being buried in a suit which is effectively immortalising Marco as male. The two scenarios are quite different.
Raid The Cave
1. “The scene transition that places Marco in the role of a princess is not evidence that Marco is trans.”
So the scene transition I am referring to is the bit where Star and Marco are in Star’s room, Star holding her wand in the air like a sword and Marco just behind her. The scene then transitions to Buff Frog reading a book with what I am assuming is a prince and a princess in a similar pose, Marco being in the position of the princess.
Anyway yeah, perhaps not super solid evidence of trans Marco and maybe it is simply just a gag, but it doesn’t prove Marco is cis either.
2. “Marco is referred to by male pronouns in this episode.”
So one of the Alternative Monsters calls Marco “dude” but in all honesty they struck me as the type of person to call people dude indiscriminately.
But Marco could simply just be in the closet.
3. “Marco presented as male throughout this episode.”
Marco could simply just be in the closet.
Trickstar
1. “Marco being called Jennifer was just a gag.”
Maybe so but it seems an oddly specific name for a gag. Even if it was a gag though, it doesn’t prove Marco is cis.
2. “Marco was visibly sad when they were called Jennifer.”
Okay, so as far as I am aware I came up with theory that Jennifer is Marco’s preferred name and this is the explanation I have for this. So Marco being sad didn’t sit right with me for a while as it did seem to be a spanner in this being used as evidence, but then we also have to think of the timing of this episode.
2 episodes prior Marco got with Jackie in the episode “Bon Bon the Birthday Clown” and something tells me Marco isn’t really even out to themselves yet, maybe just in that discovery stage of not quite understanding why they want to be a girl and not even knowing that it is possible for them to be themselves. My point here is though, Marco is probably not reach that point where they are like “I’m trans” and therefore probably just trying to be a man for Jackie.
So let’s say I’m right, Marco is suppressing the girl within to be a man for Jackie, but in Marco’s wallet is something that has their preferred name on and Preston sees this and calls Marco by it assuming it is their name (which technically it is but you know what I’m getting at). Suddenly Marco has this reminder of what they are suppressing which brings a wave of sadness which they quickly suppress again.
Now, granted this is conjecture and I’m not gonna claim this is canon and correct. All I’m doing is providing an explanation for what might be going on.
Yes, it is possible Marco just hates the fact they have just been called by a girls name but the above is possible too.
But just to add, the number of times in the show Marco has been called by female pronouns with no reaction (and I am not referring to St. O’s here) and it is this name after getting with Jackie that finally elicits a response. Doesn’t that strike you as a little odd.
3. “Marco presents as male during this episodes.”
Could just mean they are in the closet.
Baby
1. “Marco presents as male throughout this episode.”
Could just mean they are in the closet.
Running with Scissors
Please refer to this post.
Mathmagic
1. “Just cos their is a boy version of Star doesn’t mean there is a girl version of Marco.”
The many worlds theory would have to disagree with you.
2. “Even if there is a girl version of Marco that doesn’t necessarily mean Marco is trans.”
Okay, for the timeline of Star and Marco this follows this could very well be true, but somewhere there will be a parallel where Marco definitely is trans.
3. “Marco is just anxious about being called to the front of the class by Star.”
Okay, so I have admitted Marco’s social anxiety isn’t 100% proof that Marco is trans but Marco has on repeated occasions been shown to have social anxiety of some sort. “Gift of the Card” being a good example. Marco is and has shown to be pretty good at mathematics, getting an A+ on a paper in Miss Skullnick’s class during “Match Maker”. Not to mention Star would be at the front of the class with them in this scenario. Strikes me as odd this situation would cause Marco so much anxiety that they hide behind a book instead of helping their best friend.
Also the second time Marco is called up in this episode they just seem fed up as opposed to anxious.
4. “Marco presents as male throughout this episode.”
Could just mean they are in the closet.
5. “Marco is referred to male pronouns and titles throughout this episode.”
Again could just mean they are in the closet. Also just going back to a previous point. Marco seemed anxious when Star called them up to the front of the class but when Miss Skullnick said, “Mr Diaz, it’s your turn.” They instead seemed more fed up. Fed up at being called Mr Diaz maybe?
The Bounce Lounge
1. “Marco being called a lady by the pirates was a gag.”
It is possible but isn’t proof Marco is cis.
2. “Marco presents as male throughout this episode.”
Could just mean they are in the closet.
Crystal Clear
1. “If magical beings do not see Marco as male, then how come Rhombulus called Marco by male pronouns.”
So the entire thing of magical objects and beings viewing Marco as female or at the very least disregarding Marco as male is just a theory. Regardless though Rhombulus is one of few to have called them by male pronouns, plus although he knows little about Marco thinking they might be a servant, maybe he is aware that Marco is referred to by male pronouns from his position on the Magical High Commission. Maybe.
The entire magical beings/objects viewing Marco as female or at the very disregarding them as male is just a theory though.
2. “Marco is referred to by male pronouns throughout this episode.”
Disregarding the previous point, Rhombulus has never met Marco before and can easily be perceived as male throughout this episode. Plus being frozen in crystal, it isn’t like Marco had an opportunity to correct him.
3. “Marco presents as male throughout this episode.”
I feel Marco’s outfit in this episode is pretty gender neutral but regardless, Marco could still be in the closet.
The Hard Way
Marco isn’t present during this episode.
Heinous
1. “Marco is only referred to by female pronouns cos Ms. Heinous knows Marco as female.”
So yes, Ms. Heinous knows Marco as Princess Marco and maybe Star and Marco can’t be bothered to correct her. Doesn’t really explain why Marco’s parents don’t correct her though. I mean at one point they even refer to Marco as their son in a private discussion but don’t correct Ms. Heinous once.
2. “Marco only wears the Princess dress because they are forced too.”
Once again, yes Marco is forced to wear the dress, however in front of the camera when Star does Marco’s blush, Marco asked how they look showing some concern for their appearance in their female persona. Also at the end of the episode Marco asked if they can keep wearing the dress for the game night. It is hard to hear cos it is when they are kinda celebrating and going “Alright” but if you listen closely you can hear them say it.
3. “Marco could just be a cross dresser.”
This is possible. Some (not all) cross dressers do identify themselves as being trans though.
4. “Marco could just be a guy who likes feminine things.”
Also possible but it does not disprove Marco being trans.
All Belts Are Off
1. “Disney would not show Marco’s bare chest if Marco were trans.”
Okay, so the the last time this happened was during “My New Wand” where Marco quickly covered up their chest and then before that, it was very early in Season 1.
Anyway, in Season 1 when it happened I made the argument that I didn’t feel like Marco was being written as trans at that point. I could be wrong but I’m pretty certain Marco was originally meant to be written as cis male and from my perspective, watching through evidence indicating otherwise starts appearing around “Cheer Up, Star” onwards.
Past this point that argument falls through though and honestly, all I can do here is theorise but my argument is, Disney has never done trans representation and although it is true they do not show bare female chests in Disney as far as the audience is concerned right now, Marco is male. It’s also not 100% known if this is a legit plot arc where Marco will eventually come out as trans or a group of writers/storyboard artists sneaking bits and bobs in that back up the trans Marco theory.
In all honesty, the way I see it is that there are so many unknowns and what ifs for this to be constituted as evidence. After all, trans representation in Disney is uncharted waters.
2. “Marco presents as male throughout this episode.”
Arguably the karate uniform is unisex but regardless this could just mean Marco is in the closet.
3. “Marco is referred to as male throughout this episode.”
Again, this could just mean they are in the closet.
Collateral Damage
1. “Your theory that this is a metaphor for a future trans Marco plot line is far fetched and grasping at straws.”
I will happily admit this. It was just me theorising but I will admit that particular theory was pretty weak.
2. “Marco presents as male throughout this episode.”
This could just mean they are in the the closet.
Just Friends
1. “Marco is just a guy who has feminine interests.
This is possible but it doesn’t definitively prove Marco is cis.
2. “Marco refers to themselves by male pronouns.”
This could just mean they are in the closet.
3. “Marco is referred to by male pronouns throughout this episode.”
I think most of the time this was Jackie referring to Marco as “dude” which I swear Jackie is one of those people who uses that word indiscriminately. However this could just mean Marco is in the closet.
4. “Marco presents as male throughout this episode.”
This could just mean they are in the closet.
Face The Music
1. “Marco presents as male throughout this episode.”
So firstly I will state my standard “this could mean they are just in the closet.” Plus it has been a while since I watched the Live Chat but I seem to recall Marco either saying they liked wearing the shoulder tassels or the princely suit, I can’t remember which but regardless of which it won’t negate my next point. Star’s song day is a once in a life time event and Marco probably won’t wear attire like that very much in their life time, it probably just seems fun and special to dress up fancy for a day. And I speak from experience as like I have mentioned before, going to my prom and wearing a suit was a special occasion I enjoyed and me and my friends even got a funny photo that looked like something from an office sitcom.
2. “Marco is referred to by male pronouns throughout this episode.”
This could just mean they are in the closet.
Starcrushed
1. “Marco’s anxiety is purely about Star.”
It is possible but Marco has appeared anxious in social situations long before Star’s crush entered the picture.
2. “Disney would not show Marco’s bare chest if they are trans.”
So I have already covered this in depth so all I am gonna say here is, for all intents and purposes Marco is canonically male right now, which I get doesn’t seem to be helping my case saying that. But my point is up until Marco comes out as trans I suspect Disney will continue to treat Marco like they would any other male character.
3. “Marco presents as male throughout this episode.”
This could just mean they are in the closet.
4. “Marco goes by male pronouns throughout this episode.”
This could just mean they are in the closet.
Season 2 Summary
So the main thing to indicate Marco is cis male continues to be their gender presentation and the pronouns they are referred to by. These two things being points that are becoming increasingly blurred.
"Running with Scissors" although I have my theories seems to be the largest and only credible spanner in the works I feel along with "Marco's Bare Chest" argument but neither of these definitively prove Marco is cis.
Meanwhile the insecurities that point towards Marco being trans just seem to keep mounting up.

How Gaming Makes You a Better (Yes, Better) Communicator
The stereotype of gamers as abysmal communicators is familiar.
It’s easy to picture an anti-social type sitting alone in his unkempt room with the blinds drawn, swilling energy drinks and grinding levels past dawn. Or worse yet, the kind who racks up kills online while wearing a headset and emitting a nonstop stream of cringeworthy recriminations. There is also that timeworn trope of the dungeon crawlers—those chortling weird-beards in the back room of the comic shop, forever rolling dice of peculiar geometries and blurting shrill inanities about critical fumbles: “This is preposterous!”
Indeed, it is—for gaming has long-since emerged from the basement. More than half of American households are now home to at least one gamer who plays for a few hours a week. As an industry, vidya games have long since eclipsed Hollywood, and with mobile gaming now on track to surpass consoles and PCs, the global gaming market sits on the cusp of $100 billion. And, stereotypes aside, adult female gamers outnumber all those loathsome teenage boys.
Gamers, in fact, are everywhere. They’re running the morning meeting at your office, putting out literal fires in your neighborhood, and researching vital new kinds of medicine. And one thing all these roles have in common—whether it’s analyzing feedback from beta testers or crunching some quick numbers ahead of the guild’s next raid—is communication. In fact, whether you game via a big screen or a pocket-size one—or at a table with no screen at all—gaming might just make you a better communicator, collaborator, and all-around team player.
Project manager by day, dungeon master by night
Many games unite players in pursuit of a shared objective. Maybe it’s the simple, time-honored goal of a first-person shooter like Halo or Call of Duty, e.g., “shoot the opposing team more than they shoot us.” (A noble goal with million-dollar stakes, at times.)
Or maybe the mission is more complex; a group of friends gets together on Friday nights for wine, cheese, and a Dungeons & Dragons adventure involving twenty-sided dice and character sheets for goofy rogues with names like Storm Drayne.
All the same, these endeavors aren’t so different from when the sales team at the office pushes to hit its third-quarter target or when the developers furiously mash out the newest release ahead of next week’s deadline; they all require coordination. The Friday night dungeon master, who may have labored for hours mapping out a campaign that plays to her friends’ strengths and tests their cohesion, might find these same skills come in handy on Monday morning while mapping out the week’s goals for her trusty band of programmers.
Where guilds tend to use voice chat clients during raids and office folks might instead rely on Slack, in either case, unless each member takes on a role that serves the broader purpose of the team and works cooperatively, their effort is bound to struggle.
For a comical illustration of this lesson in freefall, consider the woeful cautionary tale of World of Warcraft’s Leeroy Jenkins, who precipitated an utter massacre by charging in alone while the rest of his crew was still discussing their plan of attack.
This can be equally evident for a five-player team in a game like Defense of the Ancients, where a random server connection might fill your headset with tactical calculations uttered between two teammates in Portuguese, while another’s suggested maneuvers appear on your screen in Cyrillic. Such communication challenges can, to put it mildly, make it difficult to properly time a coordinated strike, or to know who on your team will need backup and when. It can also be just plain stressful—even before whatever semblance you had of a plan starts to crumble, alongside morale.
High spirits lead to high scores
To UK Halo player Abdul Musawwir, keeping morale up is the most essential part of team interaction:
If something bad happens in a game, a team that responds to that calmly and confidently is way more likely to regain control compared to a team that just gets angry or starts blaming each other. Poor morale is going to lead to more mistakes, like mindlessly charging the guy who last killed you. . . . Remain focused, remain positive. Just shake that incident off and move on.
Thus, gaming teaches us the value of communicating clearly and concisely, even in situations that feel dire. Maybe the concern when you’re part of team in Halo is that one of your opponents has managed to take a strategically advantageous perch with a long-range weapon like a sniper rifle. Or maybe you’re on deadline at the office, battling a buggy script while trying to stage a critical post.
Either way, no one likes feeling shouted-at or having to manage other people’s panic. In situations like this, it’s essential to know who you can work with and to state plainly what you know, why it’s important, and how it can be resolved. This tends to be vastly more productive than trying to handle such problems alone or freaking out your teammates or colleagues. In this respect, a question like “Will you take a look at this interactive I’m trying to embed?” has more in common with “Do any of us have a rocket launcher?” than with “Oh God, I have no idea what to do.”
Plus, having rehearsed being assertive and adapting on the fly in pitched combat where warnings are constantly flashing and the terrain around you sometimes explodes, pivoting to an urgent assignment at the office might just feel like a piece of cake.
When communication itself is the game
In some games, communication isn’t just a crucial tool if you want your team to do well; rather, what you tell people is itself part of the game. Players in a roleplaying campaign, for instance, use conversation (and sometimes persuasion) to essentially construct a story around their characters’ shared quest.
Lisa Pickoff-White, a journalist in San Francisco renowned for her tenacity and data-wrangling skills, says figuring out how to effectively steer such a game, even when not everyone’s character shares the same values, tends to yield translatable skills:
I think table topping has allowed me to think through different scenarios quickly and learn to take into account the goals of people in my group and whether they’ll align with the plan. Like is that paladin really going to go for stealing some jewels? How do you motivate them?
While certain games (say, Texas Hold’em) tend to hinge on giving up as little information as possible, other games can at times offer strategic advantages in over-communicating—or appearing to, anyway. One example is Magic: the Gathering, where a typical turn might find one player attacking with a team of creatures—knights, elves, demons, or the occasional mongoose for instance—while the defending player decides how to try to block them with creatures of her own, or perhaps kill them with removal spells.
Here, a crafty player can lead an opponent into traps, perhaps through careful readings of the wordings of the cards—or perhaps by simply seeming to say too much. Gaudenis Vidugiris, who is known among competitive Magic players for his Pro Tour appearances, demonstrated exactly this tactic during the weekend-long slog toward his third Grand Prix victory. Nine rounds into the first day, his exhausted opponent was puzzling over which creatures he needed to block.
Vidugiris, a New Yorker who sometimes plays for the Lithuanian national team, impatiently slid his opponent’s cards into a position suggesting an even exchange that would maintain parity, as if to say “Isn’t your move obvious? I’m a professional and I’m tired of waiting.” His opponent (your humble blogger) obliged. That’s when Vidugiris revealed the Lightning Bolt he’d been masterfully slow-rolling like a titan of poker. Vidugiris—a lawyer by trade—had not, in fact, said too much, but instead communicated exactly the right amount of information to rout his opponent’s defense.
Vocab grab bag (of items)
It’s worth noting that one other way Magic, like many games, can enhance players’ communication is simply by building their vocabulary. There are more than 16,000 unique Magic cards with different names; Magic’s multiverse has many large zombies, but only one Corpulent Corpse, for instance. As a result, a longtime player might recognize the difference between the type of veil you wear and the type of vale you walk through, because the game classifies one as an artifact and the other is a land.
Similar examples can be found in iconic video games from Chrono Trigger (where, should you recruit the dark wizard Magus, you’ll quickly learn the word “scythe”) to Metal Gear Solid 3 (in which, if you find yourself wounded in combat, you’ll come to appreciate the word “styptic”).
Whatever your game of choice might be—and whatever context you find yourself communicating in, professional or otherwise—Grammarly is pleased in help you lead your team to victory and fulfill your quest.
