#Is Damian old enough to drink tho? probably not
zorilleerrant · 7 months
Note
Feel free to ignore if my asks get too much or clog up the ask box!
I'm loving the coffee head canons and I'm curious about Damian. I come from a country where tea is a big thing, and it's pretty common for kids to drink tea even if they're as young as 4-5 years sometimes, though it's usually it's very weak tea and mostly milk based instead of water. I'm imagining the same is true for Damian.
So, here's my question. Is Damian allowed tea and coffee? How does he drink his tea and coffee? Does he usually drink his caffeine with someone specific, the way Babs and Kate do?
so I think in the League of Assassins kids drink tea from basically whenever they're old enough to hold a cup by themselves. (like, I don't know, I'm used to tiny babies drinking tea, I drank tea as a tiny baby, it's probably just flower tea.) I'm not imagining milk, probably just clear tea with leaves and/or flowers - I think Talia would mostly drink jasmine tea with him, and set aside coffee as very much a grownup thing. so I think he would think of coffee as a more mature beverage, and feel special when he's allowed some.
of teas he drinks with the League, there are a bunch of people who mix up masala on the regular, but since he's so intensely athletically trained they want to keep him away from sugar, so he gets nervous around sweet foods and drinks in general. but there's also jasmine tea that his mother does ceremonies with - and wheat tea, but he hates that, even tho it's her favie - and several other green and black teas, including a smoked tea most adults around him find very rich so he tries to pretend to like it. he enjoys flowering teas the most, because he likes to watch them bloom in the pot. one of his tutors loves matcha and does Japanese tea ceremonies as well, which Damian carefully learns and enjoys. he's had occasional exposure to other ones, and he finds tea culture fascination.
once he moves in with Bruce, he's so excited to have a cup of coffee shared with him, like his father is acknowledging his place in the family. (Bruce used to have the occasional cup of decaf with Thomas, and Alfred never wanted to take that memory away, so he's always let Bruce have coffee. so it doesn't register to him it's bad for kids.) and he's proud to drink coffee with Dick, too, because it cements their bond as mentor and apprentice. (Dick doesn't know coffee is bad for kids either, because in the circus it was really normal to share it around, and he didn't notice his parents limiting his intake.) but with Alfred he mostly drinks tea, because Alfred is careful to take care of his humans, and the parenting guides say coffee is for grownups.
Alfred is partial to Scottish Breakfast, because that was Martha's favorite, and Damian is delighted to share that with him. Tim's insistence on saying Earl Grey, Hot all the time makes Damian obsessed with trying some, tho, and so that becomes his tea of choice around the manor. (jasmine, sometimes, when he's homesick. and certain other teas go well with certain foods.) Damian rarely drinks water when he's not actively running, but he can be convinced of peppermint tea when he's looking a little peaky, and oddly flavored teas like berry tea when Alfred thinks he's dehydrated.
tea he almost always drinks with Alfred, and sometimes when entertaining guests, because he definitely thinks of teas (certain specific teas, teapots, teacups, etc.) as important to his duties as a host. coffee is a father-son tradition for Bruce, and a family bonding tradition for Dick, so they're both pretty intent on it. but almost everyone will make someone else a cup of coffee if they're already getting on, and Damian takes these gifts as signs of respect, like they're accepting him as a fellow adult. he doesn't like all of them, but he likes the thought.
he's still wary of sweet foods, so he doesn't like sweet drinks as much, and he even likes his hot cocoa very dark (the way Alfred usually makes it anyway, like the original recipe), but he does like the variety of flavors the different syrups can have, and he's enamored of Dick's favorite (the pumpkin spice latte). he's not old enough for his tastebuds to pick up most of the flavors people are talking about, but he catalogs them carefully, just in case.

for the character headcannons ask game, jason and cass?
ALRIGHT ALRIGHT im putting this one under a cut because it got SUPER long bc i cant shut up ever
lets start w jason
A (realistic headcanon):
ok using the ‘realistic’ category here loosely but GOD i love the idea of Damian & Jason having interacted while Jason was staying with the League before getting dunked in the Lazarus Pit. like. this obviously would need to be set more in preboot and following the Lost Days & Batman Annual 25 version of Jason’s resurrection, but god the idea of it just makes me scream in a good way. Like... these are things Jason likely doesn’t remember very clearly once he’s brought back to life more fully by the pit because he was uh pretty catatonic, but Damian being a little kid and knowing about the boy that his mother keeps around the base, that she’s trying to help bring back to health. Damian not even knowing that’s his big brother, just that he’s a presence that shares his mother’s attention. Jason again being unresponsive but like, ok god you know that part of lost days where Talia shows the others observing him that he only fights back at those he perceives as genuine threats trying to hurt him,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because Jason can perceive that she’s safe, she’s not actually trying to hurt him, he trusts her because she saved him? thinking about lil child Damian who is ya know already being trained in fighting stuff and like the idea of him trying to provoke Jason just to see what happens but Jason not fighting back because on some level be it his connection to Talia or even little baby Damian visually reminding him of Bruce, he knows that Damian is safe too 🥺
and then when Jason and Damian meet again in Gotham as Red Hood & Robin respectively, Jason not really remembering because there was so much going on back then for him, but Damian realizing that oh... that was Him
B (hilarious):
alright so if we are looking at comics currently, in modern stuff jason is what, like 22? hes old enough to drink in the US but still definitely early 20s so around my around my age, thats what im using as a basis here. if we adjust timeline and still consider his death having happened when he was 15, that puts it around 2013. and then coming back to like interacting with people about three years later if we still kinda base things off of the preboot timeframe (since we never got a super solid retelling of the timeline of death -> resurrection -> training -> tries to get revenge aside from knowing he went to the all-caste instead of the lost days version of the story) making him reenter the regular world and stuff around age 18 in 2016. meaning a solid three years of pop culture that he was entirely missing, and like im sorry but he really doesn’t strike me as the type to bother looking into what he missed, he’s kinda busy focusing on other stuff. lets take a quick look at some major things from those years. 2013 gave us ‘what does the fox say’ and ‘the harlem shake’ . 2014 had that time U2 just put a fuckin album on everyone’s phones, The Fault In Our Stars movie came out. 2015 introduced the phrase ‘Netflix and Chill’ and the whole blue & black vs gold & white dress debate happened. imagine any of the other batkids (or even arguably roy during rhato stuff) bringing these things up and jason’s ensuing confusion. thank you for your time
C (heart-crushing):
so. there are two specific instances from rebirth era Jason i want to bring up here and much like a lot of these it’s less a headcanon and more of an inference based on observations, but i wanna take a sec to discuss Jason’s relationship with other people’s death. early in rebirth, Tim ‘dies’ from that whole thing in detective comics. he didn’t actually die, we as readers know, but in-universe they all very much so thought he was dead. frustratingly a lot of the batfam wasn’t really shown mourning him aside from in the Detective Comics Rebirth title itself (which just. when a major character dies even if its temporary- that should have a ripple effect) BUT an exception to that is in RHATO 2016, where we get this offhanded comment in Jason’s internal monologuing
Tumblr media
similarly later when Roy, who like, had an incredibly close relationship w Jason that had just gotten mended before Heroes in Crisis, gets fuckin murdered in that whole thing... Jason doesn’t go to his funeral either. He leaves a dramatic voice mail and then visits the grave on his own later, choosing to instead keep working on the mission they’d started rather than going and taking the time to mourn properly.
Jason’s relationship with death is incredibly complicated, obviously. He has died, he has come back, and he now is willing to cross the line most other bats won’t and will kill people when he deems it necessary. I think thats something important though- he doesn’t just like... go around killing for fun (usually, some writers preboot made him a little murder happy but even then usually this still was vaguely followed) he kills people he thinks deserved it. Like, even looking back at the mess of Morrison’s Jason during Batman & Robin 2009, Jason was still trying to bring a sense of justice with who he was killing (”punishment that fits the crime”), it wasn’t killing for the sake of killing. He sees things in this kind of almost black and white ‘people who deserve it’ and ‘people who don’t’ way, and he has no problem dealing with death when it’s with the people he thinks deserve it.
but when someone who doesn’t in his mind ‘deserve it’ gets killed? i think he just goes into total avoidance mode. throws himself into other things he’s doing, tries not to dwell on it too much no matter how much he still thinks about it (this is especially evident in him consistently telling people “i’m fine!” after what happened to Roy, despite bringing Roy up literally like every few issues for a WHILE after he died and very clearly still struggling with it, Artemis is the only one who gets through to him on it a little bit)
but yeah, I just think that from Jason’s relatively unique situation of having been murdered, he knows what it’s like and he is perfectly fine wishing that on people he thinks are bad and deserve it, but it crushes him to imagine the people he loves and cares about having to experience something as painful as what he went through. not to mention the whole “I came back, why do I get a second chance at all this when they, who are a much better person than I am, probably won’t” mindset we get some implications of him having
D (canon is a coward and won’t)
hello DC i am once again insisting a batfam member is bisexual
CASS TIME
A (realistic headcanon):
ok so we know cass likes ballet. thats canon. however i think we also should in general explore cass experiencing other types of dance/performance as well, be it herself as a performer or even just watching. like... god imagine her & like my brain just automatically for group activities puts her with tim steph and duke but also for this in particular I feel would be a Jason embraced activity, but like them going to see a broadway show or some other professional theatre or something, and her just being enthralled by the reading of body language of the performers! like again by any point in current stuff cass does have like, the ability to speak fine (reading still hard tho) but even so I think like. okay im a theatre kid if that’s not obvious from the Everything About Me but one thing I always do after seeing a show is ya know spend dinner afterwards discussing it with whoever i saw it with.
I just think that like, bringing those people i just mentioned to the table to discuss seeing a show after would be so FASCINATING because cass would bring this whole perspective of critiquing their acting on a whole different level- not based on how well they delivered lines out loud, but by what their body language was saying as they moved on stage. like im very amused by the idea of cass getting a totally different picture in her mind about what a character’s motivations were because she was paying way more attention to what their physicality was saying vs the words that were written and how they were delivered. i think the debates her and the others would have would be EPIC there. jason defending the text as it was written adamantly and cass being like ‘ok yeah sure but thats not what they did’
B (hilarious):
cass having no concept of money because why would she bother? is SO funny to me. like it’s not that she couldn’t be reasonable if she wanted to, but like, she knows that the Waynes are well off so it’s not something she actually needs to be concerned about, so she just goes hog wild. takes steph out to fancy dinners and makes steph order for them since cass ya know doesn’t really read the menus, and steph’s like ‘jesus christ this costs-” “don’t worry about it” “but cass-” and she just holds up one of bruce’s credit cards and steph’s still like “but you don’t even know the range-” “it is fine”
bruce does not have the heart to tell her to stop
C (heart-crushing):
i mean this is pretty much canon but especially now after death metal where she’s remembering, not just being told by a guy using weird alternate timeline technology, that she used to be an adopted member of the Wayne family... like that hurts so bad. To look at these people who have ya know been kind to her, Bruce has still been a father-like figure to her (i mean literally from the moment they met in New 52 canon during the flashback in Batman & Robin Eternal, where he’s telling her that she’s not a monster just because of what people forced her to do.... that she’s a hero... that hug.... dad behavior), and they do to some extent treat her as family... But to then really know, to feel and remember that she was actually adopted! She was a part of their family. To look at how she’s been calling herself Orphan while working with them this whole time... that’s so heartbreaking! I have cried about this idea so much! I want so badly a conversation between her and Bruce now where he offers to officially adopt her again, I need it so bad and if it doesn’t happen at some point in the next year or two I will be so distraught.
D (canon is a coward and won’t)
i want an in-depth exploration of cass’ relationship to her own gender. being raised without language and you know with so much of her life being independent (remember: CASS RAN AWAY AROUND THE WORLD WITHOUT REALLY KNOWING ANY SPOKEN LANGUAGE) and outside of an organized society impressing too much of gender expectations on her, i feel like the way she experiences it would be very unique! like sure she’s so far been fine with being assigned ‘girl’ (ya know that comes with batgirl, and how people just automatically treated her based on how she looks) but in terms of gender expression and like her actual relationship with ‘traditional femininity’ etc like... because of how she was raised I just think she’d have a really different perspective on it that could be cool to explore, and I think she’d fall outside of the binary after she really thinks about how she identifies.
tldr on that: she/they nb cass is what i’m getting at here

Title: The Haunting Blessing of Wayne Manor Summary: Tim is convinced a demon has moved into the Wayne Manor; Jason decides it's past time Wayne Manor is blessed. (Set in Catie's Fr. Todd AU) (ao3)
It’s @catie-does-things ‘s birthday today!! Happy birthday Catie!!!!! The Manor seems like an excessively Massive place to bless but Fr. Todd’s gonna Do It Anyway!!! Hope you enjoy and have a great birthday :D (as a sn: this is based entirely on house blessings that my college chaplain did for us...but the last one of those was 3 years ago; also semi-based on a story from one of my chaplains that it’s also been about 3 years since I’ve heard...I think most of it is pretty Accurate to how Life Works tho)
“I think there’s a demon in the Mansion,” Tim says, and Jason doesn’t look up from the Halloween lesson notes he’s preparing for the elementary and middle-schoolers at the school Dominic’s been assigned to.
“You can’t keep calling Damian that,” he says absently, starring a place he thinks can reword.
“You’re the one who started it,” Tim says sullenly. Jason looks up when he shifts in his chair, and frowns. Tim’s face is twisted and serious, and though he clutches the mug of coffee Jason’s made for him, he hasn’t taken a sip of it at all. He looks tired, not strictly unusual, but pale also.
Jason snaps his notebook shut and gives Tim his full attention. “I was just there last week for dinner,” he prompts. “Nobody mentioned anything abnormal.”
“Bruce thinks I’m being suspicious,” Tim admits, and Jason can tell that stings. “I think Dick is starting to come around, but he didn’t believe me at first either--” just a hint of bitterness, bygones of Dick’s Batman days--”and who the hell knows what Damian thinks. Cass agrees though,” he adds as if that’s all that matters. The two of them, through thick and thin.
“Have you been spending the night at the Mansion?” Jason asks, surprised. Since moving back in with Cass, he’d figured Tim, who had a bad habit of withdrawal, had been keeping mostly to himself. He made sure to keep his appointments, like his weekly coffee or brunch get together with Jason, but, when not patrolling, stayed holed up in his apartment.
It’s part of why Bruce approves the living arrangements--someone’s keeping an eye on him.
Tim shrugs. “Late patrols, working a case, Cass is in Hong Kong. Anyway,” he adds pointedly, like that’s not the point, “the point is, there’s something. It started in my old room and I think it’s moved to the sitting room.”
“Unhelpful,” Jason says. “There’s a million sitting rooms.”
Tim eyes him. “The only sitting room that matters. You know.”
Jason laughs. He does know, it’s essentially Tim’s sitting room at this point, though Jason favors it too when he comes to visit--it has the best natural light in the Manor, great for naps for someone like Tim, who, cat-like, seeks out sunny spots of solitude.
Tim still looks troubled though, and Jason sighs. “I’ll talk with the pastor,” he says. “And I’ll come by and bless the Manor.” He pauses, thoughtful, and adds, “That’d be a good thing to do anyway.”
“You think sprinkling some water will work?” Tim asks skeptically.
“Hey, you came to me,” Jason reminds him.
Tim chews on his lip. “How long?”
“Probably tomorrow,” Jason says. He’s torn--ordinarily he’d suggest confession for the sacramental graces, but only Bruce and Dick had ever been baptized Catholic (and Jason’s not even sure about Dick). Tim, neglected in more ways than one, has never been exposed much to religion outside of an academic context at all. And Damian...well he’s a special case.
Instead, Jason impulsively he reaches into his pocket, and pulls out a Rosary. He drops it gently into Tim’s cupped hand, saying, “Here, take this.”
Tim stares down at it. “I don’t know what to do with it,” he admits.
Jason bites down on the suggestion that he ask Bruce--Tim would take it as a dismissal, even if Jason definitely doesn’t mean it that way. Instead, he starts, “The big bead is the Our Father, and then the next ones are the Hail Marys, see it’s a decade, and after ten Hail Marys comes the Glory Be and the Fatima Prayer.” He goes over each prayer with Tim, who is absorbing it all, and then sends him off with a reminder that Bruce, though rusty, knows all the prayers if Tim forgets.
Tim gives him a glare, knowing what Jason is half-suggesting, but he says, “Thanks,” softly and is on his way.
Jason comes by the Manor the next day, armed with a prayer book and holy water. The pastor has been called away for a hospital visit, and Dominic is on retreat with his middle schoolers, so Jason is left by himself.
Damian sniffs haughtily when he sees Jason. “I expected more tools for Drake’s exorcism,” he says.
“I’m not an exorcist,” Jason reminds him. It’s a conversation he’s had frequently with his brothers, who, after discovering the diocese exorcist is kept secret, have decided, firmly, that it must be Jason. “And no one would perform an exorcism here,” he adds for good measure.
Damian grumbles something and leaves just as Bruce comes into the foyer to greet Jason. Jason returns his hug, but eyes him disapprovingly. “You should know better than to dismiss Tim like that,” he says softly. “Especially over a spiritual matter. You’re not a skeptic.”
Bruce’s brow furrows, but he accepts the scolding.
“Okay,” Jason amends. “You’re a detective, so you question, but you’ve seen too much to doubt the reality of a demon.”
“That’s fair,” Bruce agrees.
Jason waits a beat, and then adds, “And he’s the one who always believed you were alive. He found you.”
Bruce nods in acknowledgement.  “Tim and I have already talked,” he says. There’s an implication Bruce apologized, and Jason is glad. He’s getting better at that. Jason’s always a little surprised when Bruce just listens to him these days.
Bruce’s mouth slants down, not quite a frown. “I’ve been worried about him, but I think seeing you yesterday helped. He seems...almost excited about the blessing. Intrigued.”
Jason’s lips quirk up. “He’ll be disappointed. This isn’t an exorcism, as I keep telling Damian.”
Bruce laughs a little. “Cassie will be back from Hong Kong soon, and I wouldn’t be surprised if you got a call from them to come bless the apartment.”
Jason shrugs. “I should’ve done it ages ago.”
“Well come in,” Bruce says, gesturing, but Jason says, “I think it’d be best to be thorough and start here.”
Bruce nods. “I’ll get Tim,” he says. “And round up the others.”
“Other than Damian?” Jason asks, and Bruce shrugs. “Dick has been in and out.”
He returns with Tim, no Dick or Damian, but he’s also brought along Alfred, who offers Jason a pat on the shoulder and water bottle; Jason accepts both gratefully.
Tim still looks pale, but he grins at Jason, who says, “We’ll lets get started. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit…”
They work their way methodically through the Manor, Jason finding prayer passages for rooms he didn’t even know still existed. (He realizes it’s a mansion but why does there have to be a ballroom? He mentally says an extra prayer there, thinking of children subjected to boredom at galas while adults hunt for iniquity in the name of charity; he says an extra prayer in the library as well because the smart asses of this house, himself included, could use some actual Wisdom sometimes). Damian joins them somewhere along the way, lurking behind them and acting disinterested, even though he’s definitely listening.
They pick up Dick along the way, too. Jason focuses on the prayers and the blessings, but it doesn’t escape his notice that Dick slips an arm around Tim and whispers something in his ear that makes Tim smile, even as he shushes him. He even crosses himself a few times, right to left, and Jason files that away because did he know Dick was raised Orthodox? (Eastern Rite, maybe? He definitely didn’t know.)
When they reach the sitting room, Tim flinches. There is a drastic drop in temperature, and even Jason shivers.  It’s not like Tim to be afraid, though, and he takes a few steps into the room after Jason, whispers, “It’s in here.”
Jason nods, and flips his book to pray the sitting room prayers, and, when done, sprinkles the holy water, three times, In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Then he’s done with that, and they continue. It’s a while before the whole Mansion is blessed, and Bruce even lets him bless the Cave, where he finally concludes, blessing his entire family, In nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti.
When he’s done, he takes a long drink of water from the bottle Alfred’s provided. He’s taken sips throughout the blessing, but the blessing has still left him thirst. He wants to catch Dick, gently suggest to him that Tim might still be harboring some hurt from Dick’s time as Batman, but before he can, Dick drags Tim off to the computer, and Bruce, brow furrowing suspiciously, follows him. Perhaps Dick realizes that, or maybe he just feels guilty about being dismissive of Tim initially. Jason doesn’t give his older brother enough credit, sometimes, but he does resolve to bring it up, along with Dick’s religious background, next time Dick stops by the rectory.
Alfred retreats too, to finish dinner, a pointed look at Jason that tells him he’s staying and will be returning with food for Dominic and his pastor. Jason smiles back, but before he realizes it, he’s alone with Damian, who, with arms crossed tightly against his chest, dog firmly at his side, clearly wants to talk. Jason waits.
“Could my grandfather--,” Damian starts, not looking at Jason.
“Maybe a curse or something,” Jason answers, shrugging. “It’s not unheard of. But,” he adds, gently, “the Manor is very old. There’s a lot of trauma here, too. I couldn’t say for sure where it may have come from.”
He pauses, frowning at the boy, and then ventures, “You know your grandfather isn’t actually a demon, don’t you? He’s a man who’s prolonged his life artificially.”
“No,” Damian corrects. “The Lazarus Pit--,”
“I don’t mean through modern medication or anything like that,” Jason interrupts gently. “I just mean we’re not supposed to live that long. Death is natural. Immortality is not; he’s cheating death. It doesn’t matter what he calls himself, it doesn’t change the nature of what he is, and that’s a man and a mortal.”
“And a coward?” Damian asks, and Jason’s mouth twists. Whatever Damian might say, Ra’s Al Ghul is still his family.
“That’s not for me to decide,” he says quietly, finally. “But I would caution anyone about fearing death of the flesh more than death of the soul.”
Damian hums, then says, clipped, “Thank you, Todd,” and Jason breathes a sigh of relief that this conversation has gone better than the one they’d had last month regarding animals’ souls and whether or not they go to heaven.
Jason stays for dinner, and, as predicted, is plied with numerous tupperwares of food for him for the week and for Fr. Dominic and Fr. Paul, his pastor.
“The parishioners will think you don’t appreciate them,” he teases Alfred, as he accepts. Alfred sniffs a little and says that that is hardly his intent, but he returns Jason’s kiss on the cheek with a fond hand pat, and several more slices of bread.
Jason says his goodbyes, and Tim hops up, ostensibly to help him carry the tupperware to his car. When they’re outside, though, Tim says, earnestly, “Thanks for believing me, Jay.”
Jason catches his hand and squeezes it. “If it doesn’t go away, you know where to find me. We have a process.”
Tim’s eyes glint mischievously as he shakes his head and mutters “Catholics.”
“Hey,” Jason says, lightly, “if you’re jealous, it’s not too late to join us.”
Tim snorts, but when Jason tells him to bow his head, he does. Jason gives him another blessing. After he’s finished the Sign of the Cross, Jason snags Tim around the neck and rubs his knuckles against his hair.
“Hey!” Tim protests, batting at Jason’s hands and trying to wriggle away from the unexpected nougie attack. “I was trying to be reverent!”
“Aren’t we all, kid,” Jason laughs, releasing him. He gives him a little push towards the Manor. “Go get some sleep, Tim, you look like death.”
“Memento Mori,” Tim quips solemnly, rubbing at his head. He flashes Jason a grin, though, and heads back inside.
Jason stands for a minute beside his car, looking up at the Manor and the grounds sprawling behind it. It’s dark and imposing at night, but Jason knows the depth of warmth and love inside. It wells up inside him now, too, and says a little prayer of Thanksgiving, before returning home to the rectory.

LET'S DO THIS! [rubs my little hands together gleefully] what was the best day of zoe's life (to date)? what about the worst day? how did she become close(r) with the batfam? any heroes she Doesn't get along with? where's the strangest place she's ever been? the farthest from home she's ever been? which villains does she have particular grudges against, if any? does she have a history with any specific villains/criminals? favorite animal? what music does she listen to? any tats/piercings?
my!! heart!! is!! soaring!! im so excited to gush!!
- what was the best day of zoe's life?
hmmm. this one's kind of hard. she's had plenty of amazing days in her life: the twins being born, beating donna in a fight for the first time, the day she remembered jason and realized he was alive. i think one particular best day was the first time she ever managed to fly without crashing.
- worst day?
zoe's had a few bad days in her life. probably about four or five have been the worst days of her life: the day her younger brothers died, the day her mother disappeared, the day she found out jason died, the day kai disappearee, and the day she returned to gotham to tell everyone she was back - but most importantly, dick. the first two happened within about a year or two of each other. her baby brothers - twins and the absolute lights of her life - were murdered by the joker before zoe officially moved to gotham. her mother left soon after, fucking distraught over their deaths, and then z was left with her older brother, her uncle, and her gran-gran. then life just went on. and then jason's death happened and it hurt even worse bc one) once again, that fucking CLOWN was taking away someone she cared about so much, and two) bruce didn't tell her when it first happened. she found out after the funeral and fucking blew up. needless to say, that began her downward spiral before her own 'death.' then, she found out, that kai had disappeared. just up and left where he was going to school and was never seen again. zoe didn't know about it soonet bc someone was posing as him, sending her messages as kai, posting pictures, pretending to be kai. and then she found out it wasn't kai. this too kind of led to zoe's own disappearance.
and then the day she returned to announce she was back. zoe probably dreaded this day the most. she knew what she'd done, that she'd just up and left - yeah, sure, it was to save the people of her home planet and to stop her father's reign - but then she'd started drinking to forget. she didn't die from the fight with her father like they said she did, but she was pretty injured, and one of the worst injuries was her head. drinking to forget the people she loved, willingly, instead of letting it all come back, no matter how painful, emotionally and physically, was a dick move. and then to come back to people who thought she was dead, who mourned her, and hope that everything could go back to a semblance of what was before? dick, most specifically, was pissed. not only at zoe, but bruce and diana and everyone involved in the cover up of zoe's 'death.' it hurt zoe to have hurt dick like that and then he said he needed space to think it over and reality kind of hit zoe then, that things wouldn't be the same between them.
- how did she become close(r) with the batfam?
she became closer to the batfam through diana - and by becoming a vigilante herself! zoe's great grandfather is chief who diana was close with in my verse, and diana has always just kind of been present in zoe's family history ever since. so when z's mom left and her uncle took her and kai in, diana was also there to help. diana was the one who got her uncle a job in gotham and enrolled them in school. diana also started training zoe more closely and thus, zoe grew closer to donna, who knew dick, as robin.
zoe became a vigilante on her own when she moved to gotham and it mostly started with protecting sex workers on the streets or people walking home. it's easy for a grown man to underestimate a tiny 12 year old girl and all of them were in for a pretty big surprise when she manages to knock them out with a single punch. diana started training zoe more exclusively then and during breaks, zoe would usually go to themyscira while kai would go home to the ranch. she kind of got on bruce's radar through both diana and her own chaotic antics around gotham. we all know bruce's anti-meta rule that he had before duke and we all know how territorial he is, so and when he decided to test her and she passed, only to say "you're not the boss of me!" and run off to continue doing her own thing, bruce was...kinda peeved but also definitely intrigued.
her main link to the batfam before jason, was dick, through donna, through the titans. z wasn't an official member of the og titans -- she didn't necessarily have a mentor/boss/parent figure as a superhero -- but she tagged along on some missions. she became friends with dick, started hanging out with him outside of vigilante work, and then because bruce was a little annoyed by ALL OF IT, decided to stick around to watch the old man squirm.
and then jason came around and they didn't necessarily hit it off right away, but eventually they both came around. z cracked enough jokes and they finally had a heart to heart about some shit, and then it was like they were connected at the hip. and THEN jason got his own titans group - it wasn't very long, but they all formed a close bond very quickly - and zoe just got more tied up in everything.
after his death, zoe stuck around for dick and alfred and bc even tho bruce kept it from her and refused to do anything about the joker, she respected his code and that he too was mourning. tim was robin almost directly after jason and z liked him well enough, they got along. she wasn't around for tim's run as robin for very long, however, after snapping and killing the joker (who for the sake of the story, did NOT atay dead), zoe wasn't really around bruce a lot. she mostly did her own thing like looking for kai and her mother.
and then her dad arrived. zoe sacrificed herself to protect the earth, ended up 'dying' to the rest of the world, and then wandered in space as a drunken amnesiac for like,,, six years fighting off her dad's attempts at fucking with the universe before she ended up back on earth tracking down info about her dad and kai. that's when jason, as red hood, alongside rose wilson (bc i fucks with her and eddie as jason's outlaws moreso than roy and kory) runs into her. there's a whole lot of other shit that happens; the reason z and jason run into each other again has to do with a missing ex-titans member and then z, being z, offers to help them find this ex-member and they all kind of help her get her memories back.
shit is kind of tough after coming back when everyone thinks you've been dead but really you've just been drinking away all of your thoughts of the people you loved ans who loved you and you left behind so that they cant be used against you. like zoe def thinks ACTUALLY DYING and coming back would be so much better than what she did.
dick is....reasonably upset when she comes back and explains what happened, even if he does understand what kind of shit head her dad is. and damian takes dick's side on it and kind of shuns zoe. so z ends up hanging out with jason and tim's horde of friends where she ends up adopting conner as her brother and becoming good friends with cass and steph.
damian comes around much later and it's only because he found out she could talk to animals and spent like his whole afternoon having her translate what each of his pets thinks of him and the rest of the family. and when duke comes around, he and zoe hit it off pretty quickly and he, jason, cass, and zoe all hang out often.
- any heroes she doesn't get along with?
bruce. kind of. they've got like a love hate relationship. she doesn't tolerate his bullshit and she's very protective of all of his kids when he starts isolating himself.
barbara at times bc zoe has a tendency to go off track and do what she thinks needs to be done and that can piss barbara off. other than that, though, they're cool with each other.
rose, at first. but then both of them were like "...cool girl....with a cool fucking sword....okay....i can fuck with that."
zoe gets along with a lot of people in general. there are probably a few that im missing but usually zoe's only got a problem with you if you've done something to hurt her, her family/friends, or you're a downright dick. she looks for the good in people and once you've lost her trust, it's really hard to win it back. so any hero that's done any of those things, zoe probably doesn't even acknowledge they exist.
- where's the strangest place she's ever been?
hmmm. def some far away planet in the galaxy. i do have a hc that she ends up going to a certain planet, gets jumped by bounty hunters while in the middle of a one night stand, fights them off, and her one night stand STILL wanted to have sex with her, covered in blood and guts. it was a strange night for sure.
(also i havent mapped out a lot of zoe's off world adventures so i cant give you more! sorry!)
- the farthest from home she's ever been?
zoe's made it to the edge of the galaxy.
- which villains does she have particular grudges against, if any?
THE JOKER. zoe hates that bitch with a burning passion.
harley. zoe is sympathetic towards her for the shit she went through with the joker but zoe also can't forgive that she did nothing when it came to her brothers' deaths.
her father.
ra's al ghul. just kind of in general with this guy.
lex luthor! bc of the shit that conner's been through with that dude
oh! and like trigon. fuck that guy!
scarecrow. the fear gas has worked on her once and she still has nightmares about it.
- does she have any history with any specific villians/criminals?
those mentioned above. her dad's associates.
selina kyle. but... in a good way. they're friends.
kai.
slade wilson.
ares.
she broke the penguin's nose once and it made jason lose his composure and giggle snort which led to zoe falling over laughing for like five minutes.
black mask.
- favorite animal?
zoe, honestly, would probably not be able to choose just one! i'm gonna choose three and say horses, bears, and eagles.
- what music does she listen to?
honestly tbh, anything! her playlists are full of a whole bunch of shit across the board. sometimes she'll listen to classics, sometimes she'll listen to obscure sea shanties, other times she'll dance around to the 2000s top hundred on repeat for three days straight. it's mostly just about what she's feeling.
- any tats/piercings?
yes!! she has a few ear piercings - two in the lobe and two in the cartilage on both sides - and a septum piercing!
she also has a tattoo along her left shoulder blade and down her back. it's of a chinese dragon with floral designs, particularly lillies and a cherry blossom tree. the design is mixed with chinese and navajo influence to represent both cultures.
send asks about zoe!

@a-thousand-dreadful-things
aud grits her teeth and asks for a favour
kilnkin hey
kilnkin damian right
a-thousand-dreadful-things Hello. It says on your profile here that your name is Aud. May I call you Audrey?
kilnkin no anyway can you help me with something :0
a-thousand-dreadful-things I don't know you, so the answer is most likely no.
kilnkin do you know val cause honestly this is mostly for her
a-thousand-dreadful-things I have heard of her, yes. Tell me what it is first.
kilnkin haha ok so you know like maybe a week or two ago when you were rlly baked and running around in the woods ?
a-thousand-dreadful-things And what do you know of that night?
kilnkin ?? what i saw: you getting your cryptid on and what i smelled: a shitload of weed i mean if youre embarrassed ive seen worse lmao u ever heard of kupala night hahah
a-thousand-dreadful-things I never have. So what does your request have to do with my unfortunate venture into the woods?
kilnkin ok well you were there and i was also obviously there and i buried something and i was hoping you could help me track it down
a-thousand-dreadful-things What did you bury?
kilnkin blood lots of it
a-thousand-dreadful-things Thought I smelled something last night. Whose blood?
kilnkin doesnt matter you can keep some if you want
a-thousand-dreadful-things It does matter. I only eat human blood. And at a school like this, whoever it comes from may not be human.
kilnkin lmao were you gonna say no if you didnt get to drink it
kilnkin what happened to being a gentleman or whatever
a-thousand-dreadful-things I don't even know what it's for, or why you buried it. You only bury things if it's some big shit, Audrey. They used to bury my kind with spikes through our chests, to keep us down, to prevent danger. Is it a wise idea to dig this blood up again?
kilnkin one: not audrey two: thanks for the tip ill keep that in mind three: i told you this isnt even for me so the better question is whether or not you trust val wonderkid extroirdinaire
unfortunate pause
kilnkin lol ill take that as a no
a-thousand-dreadful-things If Valentine needs ingredients for her purposes I'm happy to help. But I'm merely pointing out that she wasn't the one who buried the blood. And again; whose blood is this? And how long as it been out of body? I may not be entirely motivated by hunger, but I wouldn't mind a break from the stale blood bags from the school cafeteria.
kilnkin fine its been out of the body for a while so you probably dont want it which means you dont need to know whose it is (: so are you in or what
a-thousand-dreadful-things Can you at least just tell me if it's human blood or not. For scent detection purposes?
kilnkin not
a-thousand-dreadful-things There's plenty of nonhuman blood strewn about the forest. I might get the scent conflated with any of that.
kilnkin you walked right by me when one of the jars cracked
kilnkin i thought maybe you could reach through all the pot and bad decisions and have a shot at remembering the smell but if thats too hard for you i can always ask someone else! maybe one of the hell hounds could do a better job
a-thousand-dreadful-things I'll help you. But you should know you've backed me into a corner where I now have to ask something weird.
kilnkin you definitely dont have to (: we could stop right here and just meet up later no further conversation required even lol
a-thousand-dreadful-things It's not that weird, hold on. Sense memory is powerful, so therefore the best course of action to remind me of the blood scent would be to prompt it with a paired scent. Which, since I am not smoking weed before heading into the forest to look for some mysterious blood, would be you.
kilnkin ugh
a-thousand-dreadful-things So to get to the weird question, would it be alright with you if I took a good whiff before we got started. I might need to place my face near or around your body. Wouldn't want to give you the wrong idea.
kilnkin fine. no talking
a-thousand-dreadful-things And I'll keep my hands in my pockets. I promise.
kilnkin very reassuring from the dude with fangs
a-thousand-dreadful-things Maybe when I take a sniff you'll be close enough to my mouth to notice I have no fangs, usually. They retract. It's very handy.
kilnkin oh sick i mean also no talking ahead of time about how close youre gonna get but thats pretty cool damn X)
a-thousand-dreadful-things It's convenient. Keeps things easy when partaking in the human world.
kilnkin please humans will overlook anything lmao i spent the whole winter break with a vampire in the middle of nyc and barely a funny look
a-thousand-dreadful-things A vampire, in NYC? One who isn't me, that is? How funny. I would've liked to connect, but unfortunately I was on house arrest at the time.
kilnkin lmao whatd you even do
kilnkin like partied too hard pregnancy scandal bad grades or like fingerwag son dont eat people youre grounded >:(
a-thousand-dreadful-things A little bit of both.
kilnkin wait for real???? serious?? pregnancy scandal?? jk lol
kilnkin anyway id say im glad you were off the streets before little old me ever got there but you seem way more harmless than people made you out to be so. eh
a-thousand-dreadful-things No one was pregnant, but not for lack of trying. And thank you? Though I sense that is an underhanded compliment at best.
kilnkin depends whether youre one of those EMBRACE YOUR ANIMAL NATURE types who gets all offended when someone implies youre defanged
a-thousand-dreadful-things Not currently offended, so I suppose I am not.
kilnkin thats the spirit (: like you more already
a-thousand-dreadful-things Thank you. I still feel more or less ambivalent towards you.
kilnkin haha trust me thats a win in my book (: dont get ahead of yourself tho
kilnkin "more" than a negative still isnt very much
a-thousand-dreadful-things That is perfectly fine. I was not getting ahead of anything. I am still firmly behind any possible thing.
kilnkin great to hear, love the modesty youll make marginally better company than the hell hounds
a-thousand-dreadful-things Hell hounds. Excellent. Just when you've thought you've heard the last of it with this school.
kilnkin surprised you havent seen them on your late night hiking expeditions also hot tip: dont ever think youve heard the last of it unless you really like being wrong which doesnt seem like your style (:
a-thousand-dreadful-things It does not indeed.
