GPTim would really like the Thrilling Adventure Hour/Welcome to Night Vale crossover, well, up until Croach fixes things. But the NV citizens hate the moon *so* much that they make it disappear, but not in their time in the future. So there’s moon destroying and time travel.
On a related note: Aurora would *hate* the TAH/WtNV crossover since the NV citiz-
#the mechanisms#wtnv#tah#i dont actually think tim hates the moon itself but i thought this was funny#anyway if you like the mechs you might like the sparks nevada segment of tah#although i think its more difficult to access now. i think at some point the backlog was made a reward on patreon so you cant just listen#to it anymore.#the tah/wtnv crossover is very fun and they say none of it is canon except the part that is#and wil wheaton plays god basically#and if you dont know tah but you know wtnv. croach is played by mark gagliardi. who plays john peters. you know the farmer#and sparks nevada is played by marc even jackson who was marcus vanston and then an erika#i dont think hal lublin is in the crossover or the snmom segment. but he is in tah and he is steve carlsberg in wtnv#theres some p famous people in tah#my favorite segment is beyond belief. which stars paget brewster and paul f tompkins#molly quinn plays fey in wtnv and pemily stalwark in snmom and theres a bit about that#also jason ritter is in it#also also i looked up jason ritter to make sure he is who i thought he is and he was apparently in joan of arcadia!#the only thing i remember from when my mom waytches that show (when it was coming out so i was young) is that joan steals mail in it and-#thats illegal. and its connected in my head with solve the world since she steals mail in the first ep. haha! i brought if back to podcasts-#i listened to in high school!#I MEANT TO SAY THAT SPARKS NEVADA MARTIAL ON MARS IS A SPACE WESTERN seems kinda obvious by the full name. but its silly and they sing some-#times#when i said jason ritter is in ‘it’ i meant the crossover. but he is also in the ‘teenagers of the corn’ ep of beyond belief!#edit. i forgot the other mechs tags whoops!#gunpowder tim#the aurora

I hate when the batfam fandom keeps forcing one of the characthers (normally either a girl, a characther who is POC or both) to act as the a therapy characther for the rest of the family, being sarcastic but emotional mature and with great adivces.
Like I'm sorry but this is a group of trauamtized people who have difficulty dealing with their feelings and comunicating them for personal different reasons. They all love and support each other and from the moment Bruce started collecting them neither him nor any of the others knew exactally how to do it or what they were doing. They can have some advice that makes sense for them as a characther or some actual emotiinally vunerable talk every full moon but it's scarce depends on the problen and not enought. They aren't therapists. They aren't even the best advicers. They just love each other and hold each others back.
That and they need therapy... wich would be easier of Gotham wasn't the Spiders Georg of evil therapists.
That's to say if you want a therapist characther that isn't a licensed therapist try Leslie Tompkins or an OC. Or send the blorbos to an actual therapist with either redeemed Harley, the love of my life Joan Leland or just again an OC.
Same for the villains. Although they do have at least four flavors of evil therapist to try. So it's not as much of a problem.
Another thing STOP doing it with Cass and Duke. They aren't plots for the white boys and Damian.
If you are a Tim stan: Stephanie is also not a good choice. And whoever did it for Tam.. I really want more Tam Fox (and the whole Fox family) included in batfam stories more often but not like that.

Ep 101: On the very first episode of The Neighborhood Listen, local CVS pharmacist Burnt Millipede (Paul F. Tompkins) and local realtor Joan Pedestrian (Nicole Parker) discuss a lost green parrot, a mystery whistler, and all things Doug (Brett Morris). Plus, we meet Vanity (Maria Blasucci), a suspicious “carrot-haired” woman.

A Year in the Life of a Mole: Arthur Krumins’ 2020
Tumblr media
What a ridiculous year to try to sum up. The effects of the pandemic continue to be devastating to so many, both the virus itself and the isolation and weirdness of life with its effects. Time became a different element, and left the usual ways I counted the days to one side, in favor of a new routine. As I luckily worked from home, and tried to be a good parent to my one year old for most of the rest of my waking hours, the days took on a new rhythm.
I used to listen to a lot of new music on my hour-plus bus commutes to and from work. But now, I listen to it as background music with my work day at home, and more subdued old favorites in the early morning hours taking care of the baby for the morning shift. As well, because of all the changes and shifting realities I found myself turning to more calming and mostly instrumental works, although tempered with the occasional blast of cathartic noise or a pulse that inspires movement.
I paid more attention to pieces of music that create a sense of direction or flow, as they build on the particular highlights of each smaller moment they contain. I think in a sense, this was the year I truly entered middle age, for the good (reserving judgement a little more) and the bad (more aches and pains and an absolute need for coffee). Some records grew on me that initially seemed too sweet or even tempered to be true favorites. There’s also the pleasure in coming back to things that initially seemed interesting, but that I had left to one side in the course of the year.
Here’s the albums I ended up counting on, occasionally spurring me to write reviews, and often causing me to find a moment to be quietly thankful that they exist.
Records I listened to on the bus pre-shutdown, and that helped pull me through the work week:
youtube
Gil Scott-Heron and Makaya McCraven — We’re New Again (XL Recordings)
Earth Cult — NATCH 11 (Black Dirt Studios)
Jeff Parker —  Suite for Max Brown (International Anthem)
The Giving Shapes —  Earth Leaps Up (Elsewhere Music)
Settling into pandemic life, and letting my headspace get blasted and then soothed:
Temple of the Roses by Ash Brooks
Ash Brooks —  Temple of the Roses (Flower Room)
Tough Age - Which Way Am I? (Mint)
White Poppy —  Sound Meditation Vol 2 (Self-released)
Rootless —  Docile Cobras (Flower Room)
Joan Shelley —  Live at the Bomhard (No Quarter)
Matt Lajoie —  Everlasting Spring (Flower Room)
Keeping me grounded as the pandemic just goes on and on:
Between No Things by Suso Sáiz & Suzanne Kraft
Suso Sáiz & Suzanne Kraft — Between No Things (Music from Memory)
Carlos Niño & Miguel Atwood-Ferguson — Chicago Waves (International Anthem)
Bessie Jones and the Georgia Sea Island Singers — Get in Union (Alan Lomax Archive)
North Americans —  Roped In (Third Man)
I came to revisit things that I overlooked, or caught on to albums towards the end of the year reading the writing of others and now intend to keep listening to:
Strange Lights Over Garth Mountain by Gwenifer Raymond
Gwenifer Raymond —  Strange Lights Over Garth Mountain (Tompkins Square)
Lisa/Liza —  Shelter of a Song (Orindal)
Arthur Russell —  Sketches for World of Echo: June 25, 1984 live at Ei (Audika)
Brother Theotis Taylor —  s/t (Mississippi)
Benny Yurco —  You Are My Dreams (PIAPTK)
Qu’ran Shaheed —  Process (Preference)
Spencer Cullum’s Coin Collection —  s/t (YK)
Nathan Salsburg —  Landwerk No. 2 (No Quarter)
Allysen Callery — Ghost Folk (cosirecords)
Gordon Koang —  Unity (Music in Exile)

i made a joan/owen playlist woooo
first image is a softer world edit that i made right after tama but never posted; second is the playlist cover that i used the last panel for
playlist notes under the cut ✌️
general note: it’s mostly owen being sad whoops, i made a lot of this with the conversations from tama in mind
also i have a playlist masterpost and i definitely wrote notes for this playlist there but i’ve also added a lot since and idk how i feel about those notes anymore so i’m just. rewriting everything
share your address- ben platt: i think there was a patron stream that made me put this on here but i definitely feel like he’s someone who loves, like, the little things about being in a relationship. no big, grand plans or whatever, just being able to make someone breakfast and share a space with them and understand them
the bird and the worm- owl city: so there are some lyrics in this song that fit in a really terrible way and we’re not gonna get into those here but if you know, you know. aside from that though this is one of the softer songs on the playlist and it’s there for p similar reasons to the previous one, with some added fun fish puns
atlantis- seafret: Maybe I'm not built for love/If I knew that I could reach you I would go/It's in my heart, it's in my head/You can't take back the things you said
better with you- jason mraz: owen’s a better person with joan around. that’s why he asked her to come back to the am in the first place; he didn’t trust himself, not alone. also: I'm better because you give meaning to the words "I love you" is such a soft line
flaws- bastille: You have always worn your flaws upon your sleeve/And I have always buried them deep beneath the ground/Dig them up; let's finish what we've started
this could fit a lot of tbs ships honestly but to me it feels most like a joan/owen song? so it’s here
white blank page- mumford and sons: Oh tell me now, where was my fault/In loving you with my whole heart/Lead me to the truth and I will follow you with my whole life
quiet light- the national: the whole thing gives me owen vibes directly post-breakup i think. like, i may not know how he reacted to it, but i do know he loves joan a lot and... yeah.
title and registration- death cab for cutie: There's no blame for how our love did slowly fade/And now that it's gone, it's like it wasn't there at all/And here I rest where disappointment and regret collide/Lying awake at night
better- ben platt: the whole song. it’s just the whole song. i can’t quote just one or two lines because it’s the whole. damn. song.
two- sleeping at last: this song makes me sad when i think about them honestly, it’s like. despite the fact that he knows joan will probably never love him again he still loves her and he’s not going to let that love go. he just loves her for the sake of loving her, knowing that’s not going to be returned.
also the last two lines of the section i shared make me sad for uh. Different Reasons. tama reasons.
Like a force to be reckoned with A mighty ocean or a gentle kiss I will love you with every single thing I have Like a tidal wave I'll make a mess Or calm waters if that serves you best I will love you without any strings attached It's okay if you can't catch your breath You can take the oxygen straight out of my own chest
reminder- mumford and sons: again, the whole song, and actually like all but two or three songs on this album fit the two of them really really well so choosing only two songs off that album was difficult
you can do better than me- death cab for cutie: this one definitely reminds me of the conversation sam and owen had in am archives 13; There's times I think of leaving/But it's something I'll never do/'Cause you can do better than me/But I can't do better than you
tompkins square park- mumford and sons: somehow i forgot to list this song on this post but it’s just. so good for them
I only ever told you one lie When it could have been a thousand It might as well have been a thousand
But no flame burns forever, oh no You and I both know this all too well And most don't even last the night
in between- linkin park: there’s a lot about this song that works, especially from owen’s perspective i think, but the part that i love a lot is: Fear is not afraid of you/But guilt's a language you can understand/I cannot explain to you in anything I say or do/I hope the actions speak the words they can
over you- ingrid michaelson ft. a great big world: p much the only duet song in the entire playlist, and the fun and cool and not at all painful part about it is, it works as a pre-canon owen or a post-tama joan song!!
it’s so hard to say goodbye to yesterday- jason mraz: again: pre-canon owen or post-tama joan, and it’s on my tama playlist as well as this one for a reason; I don't know where this road/Is going to lead/All I know is where we've been/And what we've been through/And if we get to see tomorrow/I hope it's worth all the wait/It's hard to say goodbye to yesterday
i don’t wanna love somebody else- a great big world: again, another song that reminds me of the sam and owen conversation in tama 13; Oh, I shouldn't go on hoping/Oh, that you will change your mind/And one day we could start again/Well I don't care if loneliness kills me/I don't wanna love somebody else

Second Tuesday YJ appreciation
1-3 ; 4-6 ; 7-9 ; 10-13 ; 14-16 ; 17 ; 18 ; 19 ; 20 ; 21 ; 22 ; 23 ; 24-26
—————————— First Impression
- Is that... a Reach ship? Could it be linked to the machine? It’s fonctionning, nothing good...
- 4 days later.
- I love how Garfield is respectful and aknowledges Kaldur and M’gann efforts despite the situation. Batman should take him as an example...
- A public Team. So is that what he had in mind in the previous episode? I’m relieved. So much clever that what I thought! But the bad guys will probably guess if there is a public Team, there also is a covert Team. Not all of them were aware of this...
- Kaldur being a protective Big Brother :)
- Lex restricted even more the JL? What does he want them to do? Charity missions and gala?
- Strikes against meta people :( Not really surprising as we have strikes against POC and queer people... Humankind really doesn’t like difference, does they? :(
- Of course bad guys would find a way to make profit of humans. We already do it with pollution,
- Gar has good points actually! My boy had mature so well!
- It’s me or Traci is drown way differently when she is in civics and hero costume? Her face seems different.
- It’s them at the end of the previous episode! And there’s a picture with Gar and Perdita. #RelationshipGoals I agree!
- “We’re gonna start a revolution! A... a small one anyway.” xD It would be a revolution in YJ verse and against the Light actually :)
- “Get on board or get out of the way!” xD And Conner is not really proud about this and probably wonders who told this to Gar xD Who bet Wally?
- “Green skin. Can’t hide.” He’s already a famous star anyway. But easily recognizable because of it.
- “Public doesn’t always get I’m a different guy.” Aw sweetie :(
- “They already know what I have become. Now I want to show them who I have become.” So powerful :)
- “And there were no way I was gonna let this be a no girl squad.” / “Group needed a little color.” Seriously writers? Can’t they have real character motivation? Like Cassie wanting to be aknowledged as a true hero (to show her growth since her insecurities in season 2) or Virgil wanted to be known as a hero (since in the previous episode the girl didn’t know Static). This kind of comments are in the 4th wall dimension, something the fans see, not something the writers say to show they have included diversity in their characters. It’s something you show, not tell, or it doesn’t have the same impact on the fans.
- But I like Jaime and Virgil friendship
- “Not ready. Noy yet.” That would also have been a great occasion to give them character development. Like Forager is supposed to be dead, Terra still copes with her abduction and Traci doesn’t trust her control on her powers yet (her hero insecurities) and develop why Halo isn’t ready yet.
“Guessing we’re too old. Whoa. When did that happen?” Technically Conner is 8 so he can still be part of their Team and I would have love Artemis being with them as their Team lack of martial arts :)
- So it’s Teen Titans Tower but in Hollywood instead of San Francisco? And it’s called the Hub.
- Wait... where’s Traci? I know she’s the only one who isn’t part of the Outsiders or lives there but still!
- “This is so crash!” I agree Bart!
- “Finally! I mean: thank you!” Brion is so glad to have his own personal space again :) The bioship should have felt pretty small compared to his room in a royal palace.
- “Who’s paying for all this?” “Gretchen Goode.” xD
- “Now that what I call payback!” “This is a sympathy bump.” I love Cassie and Virgil frienship! Finally a girl and boy being BF without love involved! :D Please, writers, let’s them stay BF! :( I want Cassie to give poor flirty advice to Virgil when he meet a girl he like xD But fans, still feel free to ship them ;)
- Poor Forager :(
- “No way 6 teenagers are gonna to live here alone and unsurpervised.” *she says while looking at Violet and Brion* “Yeah, who knows what might happen?” Those two make love (with their respective boyfriend) in the Cave, didn’t they?
- “I would be happy, honored to act as a den mother.” Helga, stop saying honored, that’s weird and suspicious... What everyone else doesn’t find it suspicious?!
- 3 days later. It feels like it’s the same day, doesn’t it?
- Nowadays teenagers reflex: record it before to go in safety...
- Does he... play against himself? Super cute!
- EyeSpasm? What kind of technology is that? Something to make livestream? I don’t like the “Spasm” on it... Look like Granny’s goggles to me...
 - So the Reach ship makes a move 6 days after?
- “Mother of God!” Brion is still so funny while he’s angry xD
- “No drill, the Reach are back!” “No, just no!” My poor babies, please no more trauma for them :( maybe we’ll have flashbacks of Bart’s past and Jaime’s while on mode?
- Kaldur is so great and... beaten to easily? I know it’s Reach tech but I thought he would manage longer as he put Blue inconscious in season 2...
- He’s DEAD? No, he’s ok! Don’t give me heart attack like that! I had enough with Forager already!
- “Chill, Aquaman!” Is that supposed to be a joke? You know, because it’s winter and/or Kaldur is Atlantean.
- *fangirl laugh* I hated that... I just hope she won’t get hurt because the fangirling makes people dumber...
- “My spectacles” Is that an old word for glasses? “Gratitude.” This girl definitely has a high rank vocabulary.
- “Stay calm, citizen, and stay inside.” Cassie feels a little unease and  in a confident character :) Not confortable yet with speaking with the population yet :)
- “Superamalgamated.” No clue of what she said...
- Love that Virgil has a techonological plateform now :)
- Helga seems so proud of Brion :) Ok, maybe she’s not evil, but just overprotective like I thought...
- “Please, miss, you must get to cover.” Give up, Kal, she’s a teenager AND a fangirl, no way she stay out of danger...
- Wait, why Joan is at hospital? What happened to her? :(
- Aw... Ed showing the Team to his proteges :3 And Wendy is laughing!
- “Maybe it was a bad idea to do this in mid-air.” You think? Didn’t Scarab tell you about this? “This is a really bad idea, Jaime Reyes. You should...” “Don’t worry, Scarab, I’ll handle this!” By the way, why we don’t hear him? It would be interesting to have his pov since it’s the Reach in front of them!
- The scream doesn’t seem to be Jaime’s voice but Brion’s...
- Aw... Mom Arty is sad they’re leaving :( Or did they already have? Violet is crying :( “One last sleepover.” They haven’t leave yet.
- So cool Gar is introducing his team :)
- The Sheriff is funny but what kind of American accent is that? Is it cliché? I find it annoying :/ (no offense, it’s just difficult to understand)
- “We prefer protégé.” = “don’t call us sidekicks!” in season 1 xD But more diplomatic.
- Whisper A’Daire and Intergang are back! Blue already met her in season 2 with Superboy. And here are Scorpia A’Daire (her little sister I guess?) and Cairo Defrey. Is she from Egypt? Is she old or does she have metapowers with her white hair?
- Scooby Doo vibes? I mean the Team appeared in an episode, so why not? Wait, so the two girls are from Scooby Doo Team too? (Don’t know their names in English...)
- This bip doesn’t look good... The big ship is awake again! So the Reach will come? But it seems pretty empty so? Did the signal activate because of Whisper’s line? As she said they didn’t succeed?
- “Look what they’ve done to our library!” It’s just a glass sir, pretty sure it’s no big deal compared to a destroyed city... Have you seen Central City after Neutron?
- Tommi Tompkins, sound like a boy name... Wait! Is Tommi transwoman and his dad just use his dead/birth name? He’s really a jerk :(
- He’s on Lex Luthor’s side, that’s why...
- The ship is huge! Is it the same than where the heroes and Runaways were abducted in season 2?
“This is so moded!” “No way...” “Yes way! I mean: look at us! We’re in chackles!” They still have the same dynamic! :’)
- When the bad guys told you to call the JL, you know you’re in trouble! Except if you’re a dumb jerk...
- He called the US Air Forces. Is he dumb or... No, there’s no other explanation that stupidity (I mean a lack of knowledge, but essentially common sense...)
- And... they’re dead... Mayor, your stupidity caused two deaths (maybe 4?) of soldiers. Are you proud? Remorsed? “No, no, no!’ He’s a stubborn dumb jerk, isn’t he?
- “Mine aren’t (tied). Just handcuffled.” and they break free so easily it’s funny xD Why do you think they use collar in Belle Reve, stupid mayor?
- Tara’s flashbacks are heartbreaking :( She couldn’t see her parents again after her kidnapping :(
- “Do you see how brave Tara and Violet are? You can be brave like them.” *Violet hides because of thunder* It was sweet and funny :) And Artemis is educating Lian to be brave like her parents and auntie :)
- Big sisters Artemis and Tara :) It’s rare to see Tara smiling, those family moments do good to her :)
- Gar still likes to perch on people’s shoulder :)
- “No baddies, just their bones.” Bart, the Reach are insect-base, they don’t have bones... Wait, could be the bones of the abducted teens in season 2 who didn’t have the metagene? Virgil said there were kids they never saw again and they were only 5: the Runaways plus Chimmer. Where were the other kidnapped kids? Dead. And that won’t make any sense the Reach stay on that ship to die at the end of season 2... And the Team didn’t kill anyone while saving the abductees. So yeah, it have to be the murdered abducted kids :’(
- “bad news, there are still militaries air force.” The mayor is really stupid or the soliders didn’t get the memo their colleagues are dead in one blow?
- “Good news.” “Please no bad news, Please no bad news.” “Bad news.” “Urg!” xD
- Virgil’s sarcastis comments are back! xD
- Gar still has clever solutions :)
- Of course, Ed is worried :) And Wendy doesn’t have the collar anymore! The Team did inspire her! :D
- Joan :(
- Big Bro Kaldur is so proud of them!
- “No concept of how much that thing is gonna cost to get out of my lake?” Sorry, mayor, we thought Brooklyn was a democraty, not Tompkins’ kingdom... And the taxes aren’t your money either but serve the city... --’
- “A Young Justice League” that a recall of the show title, isn’t it?
- “We are all Outsiders.” Catchy indeed!
- “Relax, your time will come.” Tara can’t wait to act, but against what? against who? Those family moments didn’t stop Tara for working with Slade :(
- Is she looking at Lian? Why? :o :(
- So the ship was indeed empty for 2 years. Man, Jaime and Bart would be so mad at them when they’ll learn the Anti-Light thing and that they knew there were no Reach on it...
- Lag’aan! Is still in the hero game! Only for Atlantis or he’s part of the League now?
- Oracle!
- So Kal was indeed holding back!
- Who is the second guy? He looks like Garth’s old brother. Edit: name’s Wyynde. he appeared in the tie-comics.
- “I don’t think he’s ready for that, for this.” M’gann also talks about the lies and secrets the Anti-Light has to come up with. She doesn’t want that responsibility and burden on her brother’s shoulder. And maybe fears his reaction to this.
- What is the Anti-Light mission?
- Brucely and Wally plushie! Wait... is that text sounds? This’s Tara but where is... In Lian’s room? In her own room? Are they sleeping in the same room just like Violet and Artemis?

Readerly Exploration # 6                  April 1, 2018
Course Reading 1: Tompkins— Chapter 7, “Expanding Academic Vocabulary”
The Big Take Away: Effective vocabulary instruction requires teachers to possess a strong understanding of the three tiers of words, incorporate key vocabulary concepts in their teaching, and provide students with word-learning procedures to increase their reading independence.
Nugget: Before reading this chapter, I knew vocabulary instruction was important, but I did not realize how challenging it can be for teachers. When discussing assessment, Tompkins points out that the grade-level standards are very vague on what words students should know and how many words they should be taught. While some commercial tests exist, vocabulary is often measured informally. Rather than traditional matching assessments, Tompkins recommends several authentic measures including rubrics, quick writes, word sorts, and visual representations.
Course Reading 2: Graves et al.— “Words, Words Everywhere, But Which Ones Do We Teach?”
The Big Take Away: SWIT is a comprehensive process that allows teachers to identify unfamiliar words, consider if they are essential, valuable, or accessible, add any imported words to enhance the reader’s understanding, and determine the most appropriate form of instruction for each word.
Nugget: This article made an interesting point that Powerful Instruction is not always a requirement for Essential words. As the name implies, these words are essential to understanding the text, but that does not mean they are always more challenging than the Valuable or Accessible words. It should not be assumed that all Essential words are abstract or complex. It is possible that they only require a brief explanation or an opportunity for students to infer their meaning. Given that classroom time is so valuable, teachers need to be very thoughtful in their instructional decisions and allocate the proper amount of time to each word.
Readerly Exploration Experience:
Once again, I decided my readerly habit would be reading a wide variety of genres and formats of texts to grow in my knowledge and experience as a reader. While I chose to complete the same task as my last exploration (connecting a text from a different genre or format to the course readings), my exploration proved to be extremely different. Both of our course readings discussed vocabulary instruction, and they presented several interesting procedures and activities teachers can use in the classroom. To begin, Graves et al. introduced SWIT, a newly developed process for selecting vocabulary words from a given text. After reading the two examples in the article, I decided that I wanted to try it out for myself. I went to my small, but rapidly expanding, collection of children’s books and selected What Is the Statue of Liberty? by Joan Holub. In my first attempt at SWIT, I would select vocabulary words for my (hypothetical) 3rd grade students from the first three chapters of this informational text. Here are the steps I took...
1. Identify Potentially Unfamiliar Words: As I read the first three chapters, I wrote down all the words that would likely be unfamiliar to my 3rd grade students. I ended up with a total of 18 words: liberty, patriotic, harbor, hollow, landmarks, immigrants, anniversary, hope, publicity, sculptor, ordinary, postage, suspicious, legend, ancient, democracy, shackle, and departed. I listed these words in column one of my chart.
2. Identify the Four Types of Words to Teach: The second step I took was to determine if my words were Essential, Valuable, or Accessible. I began by selecting my Essential words, which students must know to understand the text. The first three chapters discussed the idea behind the statue, the placement of the statue, and the process of designing the statue. With that in mind, these are the seven Essential words I selected: liberty, patriotic, landmarks, immigrants, hope, sculptor, and democracy. Next, I chose Valuable words that my students would use throughout their reading and writing development. This included seven words: harbor, hallow, anniversary, publicity, suspicious, legend, and ancient. Next, I selected Accessible words, which are higher frequency words that students with limited vocabularies might not understand. I ended up with only two words: ordinary and departed. Lastly, I added symbol as an imported word because students should understand that the Statue of Liberty is a symbol of hope and freedom. It should be noted that I eliminated 2 words from my list: postage and shackle. I realized that they were not essential to the reading, would not be valuable for general language use, and did not occur frequently.
3. Determine the Optimal Type of Instruction: To determine how to teach each of these vocabulary words, I considered their importance to comprehension, how concrete or abstract they were, and how much context the chapters provide. I decided that five words needed powerful instruction: patriotic, immigrants, hope, legend, and democracy.  Nine words needed a brief explanation: liberty, harbor, hollow, landmarks, anniversary, sculptor, ordinary, suspicious, and ancient, and two words could be inferred through the text: publicity and departed.
4. Implement Vocabulary Instruction: Now that I have selected my vocabulary words, I could (hypothetically) start to plan the materials and activities needed for my lesson!
Using SWIT proved to be a very enlightening experience. While I was initially skeptical of the process, I now see how it can be a valuable tool for selecting vocabulary words. Unlike the tiered approach, which simply provides teachers with a list of words, SWIT helps teachers identify which words are essential to the reading, valuable for future language usage, and important for limited vocabulary students. Furthermore, it helps them plan the instructional approach they will take to successfully teach each word. I love that SWIT accounts for all students and their unique vocabulary needs. If teachers know their students well, this tool will give them a great starting point to develop instructional materials and plan engaging activities. All that being said, I do recognize there are some challenges with SWIT, namely that it is time consuming and requires a great deal of teacher judgement. In defense of this process, I believe that SWIT would get faster with time, especially as teachers become more familiar with their students and the curriculum that they are using. Additionally, teacher judgement could be improved if school districts provide proper training and support for this process, potentially through reading coaches or grade-level teams. Given my lack of experience and expertise, I am not sure how successful I was at using SWIT, but I am grateful for the opportunity to try it out! I look forward to discussing this process more in class.
In addition to using SWIT, I wanted to do a vocabulary activity related to Tompkins’ chapter 7. While there was a lot to choose from, I decided to expand my word knowledge of a particular term. Using my chart from above, I chose the Essential word patriotic. Here is the information I found...
Patriotic (adj.)
Definition: Having or showing love for one’s country Other Forms: patriot (n.), patriotism (n), patriotically (adv) Synonyms: devoted, loyal, nationalistic, dedicated, dutiful, faithful, fervid, zealous Antonyms: antisocial, misanthropic, traitorous, unpatriotic Root Word: PatriotSuffix: -ic (turns a noun into a pronoun) Etymology: The Greek word patēr (father) was the basis for patris (native land) and patriōtikos (relating to a fellow country man).
Most likely, I would not share all of this information with my 3rd graders, but a lot of it could be used to develop their word knowledge of patriotic. This information could be followed up by several example sentences and opportunities for students to practice this word.  For example, they could research American heroes and make a list of patriotic Americans.
As a result of this readerly exploration, I am much more confident in my ability to implement vocabulary instruction. While I still have a lot to learn, I am grateful for ideas and information presented in the course readings. If there is one thing I will remember from this exploration, it is that vocabulary instruction should be a priority. If students are to become word conscious, they must be exposed to a wide variety of interesting words, that goes beyond a generic list of words to memorize. Students deserve the opportunity to play with language and use it to powerfully express their thoughts and feelings. I hope one day I can make this a reality in my classroom!

Kayla Flemmens, 3/25/19, Gill & Tompkins Instructional Practices
Readerly Habit: Engage in the reading process to increase the likelihood of text comprehension (pre-reading, reading, responding, exploring, applying)
Task: Choose one resource in the citations of the assigned reading(s), track it down and read it.
The big takeaway from “The Comprehension Matrix” is that both reading and content area teachers have to be able to design lessons that will help students comprehend specific texts by helping them develop comprehension strategies that can be used on a variety of different texts. A nugget from “The Comprehension Matrix” is that in order for teachers to successfully help their students develop comprehension skills and strategies, teachers must have adequate knowledge of both their students and comprehension instruction.
For this Readerly Exploration, I looked up one of the references that Gill used in her article and read it. The additional article I read was called, “What’s a Teacher to do: Suggestions for Comprehension Strategy Instruction” by Karen A. Onofrey and Joan Leikam Theure. Reading this article after reading “The Comprehension Matrix” helped me solidify the main ideas from Gill’s article while also expanded a few of the ideas that Gill just touched on in her article. This expansion better helped me understand Gill’s article and also helped me learn some new things. Onofrey and Theure explored a few specific comprehension strategies more deeply and talked about both the importance of explicit instruction and modeling (which Gill also mentioned), and also gave examples of teachers using these strategies. One strategy that they gave that I really liked and could see myself using was called “in the moment” read aloud journal partners. In this strategy, the teacher reads aloud to the students and pauses at distinct places to have students write about a comprehension strategy. The teacher provides a guiding list for students to use, but they are not limited to the strategies listed. Students then swap their reading journal with someone near them and respond to their partner. In this method, students are able to practice using the comprehension strategies and also see how their partner uses the strategies and to respond to them. For Tompkins’ instructional procedures, I looked at Interactive Read Alouds and Reading Logs, and this “in the moment” read aloud journals method seems to be a good blend between these two strategies. Although many teachers are often unsure of how to approach comprehension instruction, reading both of these articles has helped me better understand how to incorporate comprehension strategies into my classroom.
