Alright, so to start off, I just want to get this out of the way: Fuck JK Rowling, trans rights are human rights, free Palestine, black lives matter, and bigotry of any kind is an absolutely disgusting use of free will.

I was going to throw all of my issues into the answer to your ask, but I got part way through the first section and went, "This is a lot. Maybe I should just make a post." So here we are.

I'm going to be breaking this post into sections, just to keep it a bit more cohesive and less wall-of-text-y. First up:

MAJOR PLOT HOLES AND INCONSISTENCIES

There is absolutely no mention of Credence at all in the original books. If he was such a pivotal character, especially one related to the Dumbledore's, how did he just disappear into obscurity (no pun intended) by the time the main series took place?

Gellert’s “Your brother abandoned you” comment at the end of CoG makes no sense. If Aberforth is the father, that would make Albus an uncle… and if Grindelwald knows oh-so-much about the Dumbledore family, you’d think he would know enough to not make that mistake

Jacob in Hogwarts is literally impossible... Unless he’s a squib. But if he is a squib, we should have gotten even a tiny hint of magical ancestry. Now, we're just assuming things to make the dots connect, and if your readers have to go through such mental gymnastics to understand the story you've written, you've done something wrong.

The Queenie/Jacob marriage at the end of SoD takes place in Queens, in Jacob’s bakery. But how are they getting married in the US? The laws regarding No-Maj/Wizarding relationships haven’t changed yet!

‘Vulnera Sanentur’ is the counter-curse for ‘Sectum Sempra’… A spell that was invented by the Half-Blood Prince… who has not been born yet. I mean, come on. That's just lazy writing.

Ariana’s death in the three-way duel between Gellert, Aberforth, and Albus directly goes against the blood pact! Killing curses were being exchanged, so why didn’t the pact have any effect then?

The whole blood pact in general makes no sense tbh. If thinking about harming the other is enough to activate the curse, why is murder by proxy allowed? They're still thinking of hurting each other, just by manipulating other people to do it for them. Is that not seen as "direct harm"???

Leta and Corvus Jr are very explicitly stated to be the last of the Lestrange line… But they’re obviously not? Where did Rabastian or Rudolphus come from? Did they just spawn in? Or could it be that the entire Lestrange plot line in CoG just meant absolutely nothing

The twin Qilin being dead means that it. Is. Dead. Magic cannot bring back the dead, which was the whole point of the OG books. So is it an inferi now? An animated corpse? But it apparently still uses magic to figure out who to bow to, which is something I'm pretty sure an inferi is incapable of. So what is it??

The future is the future is the future. Gellert saw the future. So anything that happens between the present and the point he saw was *always going to happen*. The whole “counter-sight” plot doesn’t make any sense because the only ones confused are the characters and us. The future has already been set!

In CoG, Albus is a DADA teacher… But he never taught Defense. He was the Transfiguration professor! We know this because it was stated in the original books that Tom Riddle asked for the Defense position when the previous teacher (who had been working there for 50 years) retired. So how on earth is albus teaching DADA 10 years before Tom starts school??

The Qilin bowing to Albus makes no sense. His entire arc in The Deathly Hallows was there to prove that he was not pure of heart, nor was he deserving of a powerful station.

After all the lead-up and hints that Jacob is pure and virtuous, it would have made more sense for it to bow to him… By which I mean, it still makes no sense, but it would have been a better twist than whatever bs they actually tried to pull.

Yusuf Kama going to Grindelwald serves no purpose other than to add suspense for the audience… As far as the others know, he was loyal to them for the entire time. The whole question of "will he, won't he" is totally irrelevant to the other characters because they know him to be on their side. It's not a surprise to them when he turns on the wizard nazis

There is absolutely 0 continuity with the Dumbledore/Phoenix thing. If Credence’s came to him because he was dying, then does that mean Ariana had one, too?

Honestly, on the topic of Credence, his entire story was just. Anticlimactic. You mean to tell me that after all that build-up, all those hints that his mother will finally be revealed... We get literally nothing about her?? Then he just dies??? Off-screen??? WTH Joanne??

If Yusuf couldn’t follow Corvus Jr because Irma’s magical signature was too weak, then WHY SEND LETA? Wouldn’t she have a magical presence he could trace? She could jeopardize the entire operation, all for what?? Some convoluted baby swap scheme? That also makes no sense??

AND WHY LEAVE HIM WITH A RANDOM LADY - no way to contact him, no way to find him, nothing - especially if that lady happens to be descended from the witch hunters responsible for the Salem witch trials??? Me thinks Corvus Sr put zero thought into this entire situation

Timeline Fucky Wuckys

I know this one comes up a lot, but how is Minerva McGonagall teaching at Hogwarts a full three decades before she was born?? Her birthday is in October of 1935, yet she's somehow teaching Newt and Leta in the 1910s??

SoD takes place sometime before 1939 because WW2 hadn’t started yet. BUT Tom Riddle starts school in 1938… And he needs his wand, which means Fawkes had to have been with Albus already in order to donate the two feathers for the brother wands. When did Fawkes come to Albus? How long was he with him? We have no answers!

Lally says it’s been, “... a little over a year,” since the events of the first movie. But it’s not? It’s been, at the very least, 5 years! Just more timeline confusion

FBaWtFT takes place in 1926. Credence is supposed to be 18 years old. But in SoD, it’s revealed that he was conceived in 1899… So either his mother (whoever she is, we still have no gd clue) was pregnant for about 8 years, or it just doesn’t make any sense period.

Minor Mistakes and General Questions

Mistakes

Tina and Theseus have the same job… So why could Theseus participate in the third movie but Tina somehow couldn’t?

There is some Portkey vs Floo Network confusion in SoD. Jacob comes whooshing onto the train *through the fireplace*, yet still calls that transportation a Port Key? Maybe he's just a little confused, or maybe the writers just overlooked it?

There are quite a few Vanishing Characters throughout the franchise, but 3 main ones: Abernathy, who they were implying was high-up in grindelwald's close circle; Nagini, apparently a shape shifter somehow; and Tina Goldstein?? A main protagonist???

Albus tells Jacob to, “Keep it close,” referring to his snake-wood wand. But why? Why go out of his way to instruct caution for absolutely no reason? As far as they know, it's just a stick! The wand doesn't have a core, so even if it is made out of a rare type of wood, it's still just a stick??

If the Swooping Evil venom from the first movie only works on “bad memories”, then Langdon Shaw wouldn’t be affected either. He was ecstatic to find out witches were real! Even if he was labeled as a crazy man and completely disregarded, it is entirely plausible that other people (ehem, Jacob) would have remembered the events of the last fight.

I hold very firmly to the idea that if Bunty had been introduced in the first movie, she and Newt would have ended up together. Instead, they're both just left pining with no resolution.

Questions

For a show called Fantastic Beasts, there really aren't a lot of beasts in the later films, are there? What happened to the whimsy of the first movie? Where did it go?

What is Aberforth's thing with mirrors? It was in the Deathly Hallows, and here it is again in SoD. Does he have a specific affinity for mirror magic?? Is that even a thing???

Speaking of Aberforth, what's with the goats? We have no explanation for any of that, even though it was an established piece of his character in the og book.

The whole "mirror dimension/inverse realm" in SoD also makes no sense? What kind of magic was that? Why does it never come up again? Is that just one of Albus Dumbledore's many talents, or was it just something the writers threw in because it looked cool?

On the topic of Albus, is he a seer or is he just really lucky?? In the books, it was implied that he was a very talented statistician, not a prophetic wizard. He could look at memories and easily distinguish patterns, thereby allowing him to guess at the most likely immediate future. But in SoD, it's pretty heavily implied that he saw some glimpse of the future and that's how he knows the counter-sight plan will work.

How do American muggle-borns get their letters to Ilvermorny if it’s literally illegal for any non-wizard to even know about the existence of magic? How does magic *work* in the US if it must all be kept strictly underground??

Bunty orders 6 identical cases, but only 4 of them are used in the plot. What happened to the other 2?

In the books, Aberforth hated Albus since the day Ariana was killed. That has already happened in the movies, and yet they get along relatively well? So what happened?

Why establish a connection between Newt and dragons in the first film, and then just abandon that detail to the void? Do you have any idea how cool it would be to have newt right in on the back of a Ukrainian Ironbelly to fight literal nazis?? That would have been SWEET

If you're cursed after killing a unicorn, the slaying of a being as pure as a Qilin would have a similar effect, yes? Apparently not.

I'm sure there are lots and lots that I overlooked, but I this is a pretty good list for now!! I think I might make another post for my theories and how I plan on fixing this whole mess in my rewrite... but that will be a project for another time.

All Disco - eeeepppp! I just want to get this one started but I need to be a good girl and plan it properly so that it's actually good and not just... idk massively insensitive and kind of awful. It's set in May 1968 when (my) Newt is in his 5th year and mid-OWLs.

He's Not Coping in a major way with the set-up of Hogwarts as a whole - since third year with the added classes and then the increased academic expectations from 4th and 5th year - not that he isn't academically capable.

Like playing a game where everyone else has the rules and you have your own set of handwritten rules that you cobbled together from watching other people play. And you have to play. You can't not participate. But the only way to learn that you've misinterpreted a rule of play is to break it.

And no one else knows you didn't get the rules in your box!

And now the game has expansions, added cards, extra players and secondary objectives and you're still playing with your handwritten, edited, base-game rules.

Eventually, you gotta flip the board

And so, everything else that's gotten him into trouble over the years before this could, reasonably be understood to be a reaction to something unpleasant (even if everyone else thinks the reaction was disproportionate and the unpleasant thing wasn't that deep, it seems like the actions of someone who isn't trying to be difficult - they just are). But this one is different.

No more expasion packs, please! No more objectives, extra side-quests and new characters! I still haven't mastered managing to spend a day surrounded by at least nine other people that I can't communicate with. Asking me to study nine subjects, six of which I am NOT interested in, complete essays, follow the mystery rules, support younger students, be polite, look smart, turn up on time, remember names, RAAAAAA

The next person who speaks to me is going to GET IT

(oh no, a quite innocent younger student, some structural damage, an absconding fifteen year old hiding in the Forest attacking anyone who comes by. Well he's been a problem since he was 11 - just not cut out for it. Sorry, he'll have to go).

I'll drop in the horrible bullet points I have which is basically just Lyall's internal thought process after seeing Newt's essay about Remus and what he's gonna chew him out for

Lyall POV, Newt’s essay has been disseminated into the DDC, but hasn’t yet reached the public (approved for publication and will come out in the next month). Remus hasn’t mentioned anything to do with werewolf research when they have briefly talked about the Hinkypunk trip. Lyall read it, and is now absolutely fuming.  Someone is going to think Remus is responsible for some of the attacks that haven’t been resolved since Voldemort was killed Even if they don’t believe it, he’ll be used as a convenient scapegoat This job (at the DDC) has been the first work he has had in the wizarding world and Newt is going to ruin it for him  For some reason, he is operating under the delusion that Remus is just like, a silent bystander in this and it doesn’t occur to him that he signed off on it Plus, the implication of the essay is very much more than ‘this is a guy I did impartial research on’ and he’s not impressed with the idea that Remus is going to be gossiped about in the department for shagging a colleague on a research trip.  Also why are you even shagging my son in the first place, buddy? You work together, you’re his senior in the department and in age by seven years, he’s (in Lyall’s mind) just a vulnerable little uwu baby whose last BF turned out to be a mass murderer and all his mates were just killed at war AND he’s a werewolf!? Stay away from my BOY please and thank you (never mind that the boy in question is, like, 24)  Please, the dynamic is so weird cos Lyall has known Newt since he was a disaster of a fifteen year old who was just expelled for being a Problematic King and dumped on the Department to scrape together some NEWTs. Then Lyall know’s Remus as his Precious Little Son Who Can Do No Wrong and Has Been Victimised by the Whole World and Especially, Most Recently, Sirius Black.  Remus only knows Newt as the weird guy who fishes dead things out of bogs and wants to draw pictures of him when he’s not looking.  And Newt only really knows Remus as the Guy In The Essay Basically, a fic of The Different Selves that I Portray for All The Different People I Know are forced to be overlapped on top of one another and isn’t that terrifying and disconcerting?  Layered on top, I do need Newt to explain to Remus how he was #Expelled and also his relationship with Thee (and ALSO I would really like Remus to see a picture of Newt and Thee as children, cos I think that’s cute - especially if Newt ends up going with Remus to Hope and Lyall’s for xmas dinner cos KNOW that there’s too many pics of wee Remus in that house)

Ahhh so glad you asked! Pride and Joy is my fic's only "flashback" chapter that will take place in the fourth and final season. It's totally a rip off from The Crown and will focus on Evan's childhood and his relationship with his now dead sister. It is very much still a draft, but I can share the first page:

Minette Rosier was quite fond of her first born. Not even as a baby did he cry. The Healers were almost concerned, thinking him a stillborn, but Evan opened his eyes two minutes after arriving in this world, as if to gawk at them, asking who dared interrupt his slumber with life. Born with the poise of his House, Minette thought proudly. Or so, Evan was told. She would recite variations of that story every time he cried. And Evan cried often, thus having heard them all. “So quiet, I thought it was your potent magic wiping my hearing!” Or “Didn’t shed a tear, spoke your first word to the Mediwitch, in fact! Asked her to put you back in, said you felt cold.” But Evan was clever. He knew his mother lied, knew she only jested to put a smile back on his face. She would tell that silly story, give him a smile and wink at him as her gentle hand wiped the tears streaming down his face when he’d hurt his knee falling off his broom, right onto the gravel path outside the Manor. Or when he accidentally cut himself with the knife, which he often did helping her out in the grown-up room in the basement. She would ask for the blade, and Evan would wobble over to the tools, knew which one she meant and handed it to her. “Thank you, assistant Rosier. My sweet little Accio,” she would say. She taught him how to cut, taught him how to fly, taught him how to make apples fall from the trees using only his mind. Taught him how to read at night when he got ready for bed. They’d read The Tales of Beedle the Bard together after Neely had fought with him for twenty minutes to get him into his pyjamas, but Evan didn’t like the feel of the fabric against his skin. “Could read within the first hour of your life, the Mediwizard was astounded!” she’d say in awe as Evan stuttered the words of The Warlock’s Hairy Heart, which was his favourite. “I can barely even read now, mummy!” Evan replied. She laughed. It was Evan’s favourite sound, and he laughed too, didn’t quite understand why his poor reading was so funny. But laughing together made him feel happy and warm, and sometimes she would tickle him. Always, she’d kiss his forehead and tell him, “you’re my pride, Evan.”

... And so, you can guess who was her Joy ;) Can't wait to drop this chapter in what, a year probably. Thanks for the question <3

well now i'm thinking about newt scamander and the jackal as enemies based on me and @keepmeinmind-01's conversation.

on one particular assignment, the jackal poses as newt—"kills" him, not knowing he's a wizard—and newt has to try and stop him.

the jackal is a fundamentally selfish character; he has no qualms with sacrificing anyone in pursuit of his goals. the other side of the spectrum is newt; even though he loves fantastic beasts, he has just as much compassion for humans. he risks life and limb to help the helpless.

yet the thing that unites the jackal and newt is relentless skill. they're both supernaturally competent, the best of the best in their respective fields. they're slippery, exceptionally good at escaping their enemies. and they're relentlessly devoted to their causes.

the jackal challenges newt morally, and newt's magic/wizardry challenges the jackal professionally (he shoots him, and newt still gets away!) i think they'd both be drawn to the other.

(and the jackal is named after a beast, a fact that isn't lost on newt)

anyways they'd be such good narrative foils in a crossover

Currently watching: Hannibal, Supernatural, Caprica, and the Secrets of Dumbledore. Was rewatching Hannibal and have a six episodes left, rewatching Supernatural, watching Caprica (kind of iffy on it) and rewatching SOD as I do a drawing.

Currently obsessed with: Hannibal and Doctor Strange. Just love Hannibal, and Doctor Strange is my favorite Marvel guy (along with Loki).

i'll start with "Pissona 5" - it's supposed to be a medium-length fic, Akechi Goro (from Persona 5 Royal) x OC. it's set after the events of the game where the cast are all at university, and it's basically my way of contemplating if Akechi is a redemable character lol. i've put it on the backburner for now, though, because i've been more inspired by other things. as to why i named the file "Pissona" - i like to think i'm funnier than i actually am

"I Don't Need Therapy I Need to be Bitten by a Vampire" is the fic i am currently drafting - it's probably going to be the same length as Beasts from the East but it's for Shuu from Diabolik Lovers lol. i've loved that weird little guy (and vampires in general) since i played some of the games at like 14, and i've written countless unfinished fanfics for him, so i'm just trying to actually finish one for once. it's just a re-telling of the game's lore, except i'm re-writing the main character's personality heavily to produce a different ending, and i'm trying to make Shuu a little more "complex"... it's super fun to write though, i'd like to write an original vampire story one day

Ohhhhh my godssss yes. There is SO MUCH WASTED POTENTIAL 😭 From the timeline being one big fucky wucky, to absolutely zero consistency between movie plots, to the literal MAIN PROTAGONIST being a side character in his own franchise- I have sooo many issues with them, especially the third installment.

I... I was going to try and write out all of my issues, but uh. There was A Lot. Now that I tried, I think I might just make a whole ass post about it. How about I tag you when I do?

so here are the theseus scamander ideas:

academic rivals to lovers with theseus. we know that theseus was known in hogwarts as the "school boy hero" and was very popular and academically gifted. so imagine reader being annoyed at how perfect he is and always wanting to show that the reader is better than him etc. and so starts the rivalry.. like imagine the taunts thrown, the pranks, the teasing, the bickering etc.

one bed trope with theseus. this is a classic trope and self explanatory :-)

"i had nowhere else to go", trope with theseus. reader was investigating about grindelwald or something else, things go south during the investigation and gets hurt. shows up at theseus' house (bonus points if they are not on good terms with each other for whatever reason). or maybe the other way round.. theseus gets injured and shows up at reader's house. the tension while the wound is getting patched up !!! i will go insane if someone writes this

additionally to the above trope - "who did this to you". I AM ON MY KNEES PLS PLS WRITE THIS SOMEONE.

fake dating/marriage of convenience with theseus. do i have to explain???? everybody is going to crazy about this and i respect it. this has so much potential to like make it into a series and you can have almost all the above ideas added into this. like this is THE trope!!

theseus and reader are so oblivously into each other but they keep dancing round and never confess. everybody (newt, tina, queenie, jacob, lally, bunty) is so frustrated with this so they come up ways or make situations to have at least one of them confess. they keep failing each time (maybe because reader and theseus are already together but they are having fun with frustrating others OR reader and theseus arent together they are just super shy and oblivious and one night reader becomes drunk and confess. everyone is like why didnt we think of doing this in the first place)

WIP wednesday (27. 11. 24.) - Spiders

Tim lifted a box full of statements onto the shelf.

"Aaand… done! Fourteen down, only…"

He looked around, inspecting the mess that was the Archives. 

"Well, only about ten thousand nine hundred and eighty-six left to go!", he joked, playfully nudging Sasha with his elbow. His friend glaced up at him from her desk with a barely concealed grin. 

"Wow, Tim, I'm amazed to see you're motivated to work for once! Any particular reason for that, pray tell?"

Tim put a hand on his chest in mock offense.

"Me? Why, I would never allow myself to let outside factors motivate my work! Especially not any movie nights with my best friend…"

He performed an over-the-top wink and Sasha snorted. She was just about to say something when the door opened and Martin Blackwood came in.

"Tim, Sasha, hey. Um, sorry to interrupt you, but do you know if Jon's in? I was gonna hand in my updated report, but I don't think I've seen him around today."

Sasha clicked her tongue and began rifiling through the papers on her desk.

"Hold on, I think I-"

She pulled a colourful sticky note out from under her coffee mug. 

"Yeah, there we go.

'Gone out to investigate a statement. Do not slack off in my absence. 

- Jonathan Sims'," she read out loud.

Tim nodded gravely.

"You heard the man. If he catches you reading about bacteriophages again, you're dead meat, Sasha."

She rolled her eyes at the man.

"It was only one time. And besides, the statement actually…"
