eddie diaz is truly a better person than i could ever be, because if my parents parentified me when i was a child and i was expected to step up and be the "man of the house" at age 10 or whatever that bs was, and then when i had my ACTUAL child whom i am ACTUALLY responsible for and am raising (something that i WANT to do and LOVE doing because hey, i LOVE my kid), and my parents where then like "you have no idea what you're doing. we should raise your kid. how could you think that you could ever do this" el paso simply would no longer exist. it would be burned off the map from the rage of it all. it would be fucking nuclear. if season 8b isn't just eddie eviscerating his parents for 10 episodes straight, then what's the point of it all? just to suffer??

i do wonder if the unfamiliar situation chris sees eddie in is just. eddie having free time. like i think it might be one of those log lines that can apply to a lot of different aspects of the episode but like. yeah eddie was in the army. eddie was working three jobs after he was discharged. eddie had crazy shifts as a firefighter even if he did always make sure he made time for chris. but suddenly eddie has the time to breathe. and christopher gets to watch this. and it's still laboured breathing because he needs to find a job in this town full of ghosts and his parents are needling him with little passive aggressive comments about stability and career and responsibility. but eddie is just using this time to be with chris. and chris is a teenager and he has a life and school and clubs and friends and he's still kind of mad at his dad. but eddie is just there. always. getting knocked down by ten job rejections a week and still showing up to see christopher with a smile on his face because that's his little boy. and maybe stability doesn't mean a steady paycheck or normal working hours. maybe stability is the loudest, longest, steadiest, most unconditional love you've ever had.

Tommy has been in a Lavender marriage for ten years and since his cousin does his taxes he actually kind of forgot about it. He's pretty sure she lives in Florida now?

Tommy gets an email from Alicia letting him know that she's thinking she might actually come out to a few of her friends, and not even thinking about it says something offhand to Buck about his wife finally coming out of the closet. "Apparently it's a good year for that."

Buck reacts to this news super extra normal-like, as we would expect.

(He spirals for days and ducks Tommy's calls and begs for advice and finally it comes to a head when he blurts out something to the effect of "Well you can't marry me if you're ALREADY MARRIED TOMMY.")

Tommy, licking powdered sugar off his thumb: Evan, you haven't even told me you love me.

Buck, flailing, halfway through his tirade, pauses and blinks: You should get a divorce.

Tommy, who has already contacted a lawyer: Do you consider it less like cheating if the words don't cross your lips?

Burning of the silmai is an annual tradition found in some western slomen groups. While not all these groups burn the same symbolic beings or do it for the same reasons, the tradition is very recognizable.

In some places, it's simply burning cloth/dry plant figures and singing, others have it more interactive. One variety dedicates this event to a yearly "regret cleansing".

Tokens are made as a preparation for the event. Slomen either make their own or get community-made ones to symbolize a deed or aspect of themselves they want to burn away for the new year. This variety often uses edible materials to build its "simlais" (demon sin suckers, possessors of witches) like hard wet roots covered in heat-resistant coating).

When the fire is over or the fire masters decide, the simlais are taken down and brave men try eating it to show resistance and their ability to carry the burdens of the community (they only eat it if there's anything left).

At the lodging house, the newsies have a system—each of them cuts a small slit in the side of their mattress to stash away their few prized possessions. They may spend most of their time swiping and hiding each other’s stuff just for the fun of it, but there’s an unspoken rule: if it’s tucked away in a mattress, it’s off-limits. That’s where Jack keeps Michael’s bandana on the rare occasions he’s seen without it, safely hidden away. Everyone knows better than to mess with it—some things just aren’t for playing around.
