Cassandra and the Nevarran Accent

and how it is a perfect recreation of the dead Gothic language

Accidentally discovered that Cassandra Pentaghast's accent matches up flawlessly with the extinct language of the Ostrogoths, and the Visigoths of pre-medieval Europe a few years ago and many of you wanted to see my notes so ive polished them up as much as I feel like and I am blessing you all with them now

I'll start by just going over the gothic language basics and then giving some good examples of Cassandra speaking, I am not a linguistics or etymology expert by any means, I am just a dumb ass who really likes ancient languages so bear with me, and ask questions if i make no sense

Gothic Language Basics

Phonetics-

Gothic does have very similar pronunciation to other Germanic languages with a few differences from it Frankish, and roman neighbors.

I am focusing on the basic and grammar and pronunciation as well as the phonetic alphabet, Gothic had a runic alphabet so there are a few letter without direct cognates and those will be spelled as they are pronounced for convenience

Rules - E, and O are always long, I is always short, A and U have both short an long variations EI digraph pronounced as long eye IU falling diphthong as in ew AI and AU digraphs each with numerous pronunciations

Short vowels - a, aí, i, aú, u Long               - ā, ē, ai, ei, ō, au, ū Diphthongs - ái, áu, iu Consonants  - b, g, d, kwa, z, h, th, k, l, m, n, ya/ja, p, r, s, t, w, f, x/ks, hw Significant Phonetics and Grammar

A lack of a short o sound, shift to an au sound instead

typical pronunciation of th, as well as V and W

light emphasis on the "hwh" sound of WH

Guttural sounds on vowels a, au, o ,u, and on consonants k, g, h

partly pitch, partly stress accent (think swedish as a very melodic example, german for a more stress based example)

no switching of the v and w pronunciation as seen in some west germanic languages

no rhotic r

no evidence of the Germanic umlaut

The way that i was going to have audio of her speaking here but tumblr is being a fucking menace so you will just have listen for yourselves, but pay close attention to how you will hear inconsistent pronunciation of the short o sound as in cot, no pronounced rhotic r's, proper th pronunciation, as well as her unique stresses on many other vowels

this isnt even to mention her hallmark guttural ugh sounds which are so unbelievably consistent with gothic it makes my heart sing

Some bonus Geographical Evidence if we look at the neighboring countries and languages at the time gothic was in use we see The roman empire - heavy use of greek and latin, the Franks - origins of the french language, the saxons -an ancestors of modern germans, the britons -ancestor of modern day britain and the empire of hispania - modern day spain these match up extremely well with nevarras neighboring countries being Orlais, The Anderfels, Tevinter, The Free Marches, even the way the Antiva is seperated from Nevarra by Tevinter matches the way The roman empire is positioned bewteen the goths and hispania The direct equivilents match up as Nevarra -The Goths Tevinter -The roman empire Antiva - Hispania Orlais - The Franks Ferelden/The Free Marches - Briton/Germanic States The Anderfels - Saxony Considering how much this geography influenced the gothic language its reasonable to assume Orlais, Tevinter, The Anderfels and The Free marches should have had similar effects on nevarran language.

of St. Louis Dec. 25, 1864, we the prisoners of said

"Aw man! This stinks," she groaned.

"Whats the big deal anyway? All you do after class anyway is read comic books and sleep," Amber snickered.

"Amber you're staying after too remember? You're one of the directors!" Lyna laughed.

Amber sighed.

"Looks like you're stuck with me Amber!" Lucia cackled.

Amber growled at her and lunged at her before being held back by Lyna.

"I'll stay after too just to make sure these two don't kill each other," Lyna sighed.

Lenore hummed to himself as he skipped around the abandoned castle.

"Cure Encore...so amazing...so cool.." He twirled around before screaming as he saw Catwalk in front of him.

"What do you want brat?" He scowled.

"Oooh someone's got a crush!" Catwalk teased.

"Pfft! Me? No way! Everyone knows my only love is serving Lady Tragedy!" He scoffed.

"Yeah well you have fun with that," Catwalk rolled his eyes, "Grown ups are so weird..." he mumbled.

"I simply wanted to watch the rehearsals for the play, I'm awfully interested in it," he stared at her.

"O-oh! Well then go ahead! I'm sorry I got in your way!" She backed away and cleared the way to the entrance and he walked inside.

"Thank you," he closed the door behind him and sat down in a seat at the very back of the house.

"Alright Lucia, read through that last line again," Amber instructed.

"My loneliness is an uncurable disease! Oh how tragic!" Lucia dramtically leaned back, almost tripping.

"No Lucia you need to sound more...gloomy is that makes sense like Reel whenever someone wakes him up!" Reel glared at Amber, who didn't seem to notice.

"Hey Reel?" Lyna asked as Amber kept critiquing Lucia's performance.

"Hm?"

"What's your wish?"

Reel pondered for a moment, "Dunno."

"Hm." Lyna turned back to watch Lucia and Amber bickering.

"Now's my chance! I'll create a Facade out of the prince pretending to be captured by it earning both Lady Tragedy and Cure Encore's attention at the same time! I'm so smart!" Lenore thought as he hid underneath the seats and transformed back into himself and made a motion as if he was pulling a rope bringing Reel's wish coin to him.

"Reel!" Lyna shook at the boy's shoulders but to no avail.

"Facade! Wreak your havoc!"

"SAWWWW!" The monster started tearing apart the auditorium.

"Not again..." Lucia facepalmed.

"Lucia! C'mon let's transform!" Amber clutched her ribbon.

"Right!"

"Precure! Rollback! Lights! Camera! Action!"

Showtime punched the monster causing it to stumble back and almost squash Lenore, who quickly flew up to dodge it.

"Hey its that bird guy again!" Showtime pointed to Lenore, who looked quite offended.

"My name is Lenore!" He yelled.

"Your name is Hen Whore?" Set cocked her head too the side in confusion.

"It's Lenore!" He looked even madder.

"Oh I got it! He said his name is Pan Door!" Wright crossed her arms triumphantly.

"ITS LENORE! L-E-N-O-R-E! IT'S THAT THAT HARD COME ON!" He screamed.

"Ohhhhh Lenore!" Wright hesitated. "Wait like in 'The Raven'?"

"UGHHH! FACADE! DESTROY THEM!"

"SAWWWWWW!" The monster grabbed Showtime and Wright, flinging them onto the stage, which they gracefully landed on before Showtime fell over gripping her foot.

"OWWW! CRAMP CRAMP!" She took deep breaths as Wright shook her head in disappointment.

"Set Lasso Net!" Set captured the monster but as Wright prepared to attack it-

"Ooh shiny!" Lenore swooped down and snatched her quill out of her hair.

"My quill! I can't do Wright Blitz Bullet without it!"

"Showtime! Cmon fight it!" Showtime was still clutching her foot in pain.

"I can't defeat it myself! All my attacks are defensive! What do I do now? Think Set think! I cant let him hurt Wright and Showtime and he's already got Reel!" Set's mind started racing before she realized time had stopped and she noticed a wish coin glowing in front of her. but this one looked different. Instead of the usual pink heart on it it was scarlet red and she could've sworn it was the same color as her-

"Cure Set!" The coin spoke.

"Huh?! Wait you're a coin how are you-"

"I'm your angel coin! All the times you've fought as a Precure my power's gotten stronger!"

"Wait so what do you want me to do?" Set looked at the coin confused.

"Throw me into the wishing well!" The well appeared in front of Cure Set and the coin landed in her free hand as she nodded and time restarted.

"Wishing well! Grant me your power!" Set tossed the coin into the well as her body glowed and she felt herself get stronger. When the light disappeared she found a little pair of angel wings on her back.

"Precure! Set Lasso...Cage!" Set summoned a giant red cage that landed on the monster vaporizing it. While Lenore was frozen in shock, she snatched the quill back from him and returned it to Cure Wright who looked at her in surprise.

"Set, that was awesome!" Showtime shook her by the shoulders and hugged her tightly.

"Hehe thanks.." She smiled.

Lenore stomped over to the door of the auditorium.

"I'll be back Precure! Next time I'll beat you! Next time for sure!" He stomped out and the girls returned Reel's coin back to him.

Reel yawned, "What happened?"

"You were turned into a Facade! Did you seriously not notice?!" Amber pestered.

"Nah not really," Reel stretched his arms, " Lucia back to work!" Lucia groaned.

Back at Lyna's dorm she was brushing out Reel's fur when she stopped for a second.

"Reel?"

"Hm?"

"When we defeat Tragedy, and you have to quit teaching and go back to being a prince," she bit her lip.

"What do you mean?"

"You promise to remember us right?" Lyna felt her voice breaking up.

Reel nuzzled his head into her lap as she gently stroked his back, "of course I will silly!" He laughed and Lyna pulled him against her chest and hugged him.

"Thanks."

Lather it on your thighs, making circles, making certain not to confuse this ache for that other, the one that keeps pulling you to the earth, the one question you still can’t say out loud. Recite instead the names of trees: sumac, sweet birch, slippery elm. Take your palm to the wild place under your chin and count: vein, artery, chokecherry, weeping willow, until your xacto knife pulse slows, holds. Let your mouth fill with gold, almonds, zinneas. Then: soften.
